7.5
Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Magarelli took the time to understand our frustration with other clinics, and made sure we didn't experience those same things.... He's straight to the point and doesn't beat around the bush. He cares about how you feel but never baby's you. I appreciated the quick responses he had for the questions I couldn't get answers to from other clinincs.... He'll tell you like it is and won't b.s. you.
Clinic team [Advanced Reproductive Medicine] is friendly and supportive. Only thing I would ask is to have the information relayed to us as early as possible. The portal worked well for us, but sometimes I felt like the clinic team was so busy and I would get info back later than what I wanted....Our IUI treatment was covered by insurance mostly, but it was only $750.... She [nurse] has a wealth of information about medications and procedures. I had all of my questions answered.

My wife was only able to stay at her current medication amount. It was not increased intill we pleaded with him. Still nothing though. She did get pregnant once in 3 years of treatment but is unable to have multiples so he couldn’t raise her medication ... He does care, but pushes ivf. My wife’s situation was different while others can increase meds, we were stuck at 1 dose as she couldn’t have multiples.
Great prices for the place and great staff [Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of C)]. My wife loved the nurses. She didn’t like the doctors approach on some things, they were rude and when you are having issues getting pregnant the last thing you need to hear from a doctor is this won’t work. ... Nursing staff was great, it was like my wife became family and not a patient. They knew each other so well.
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
The doctor while he punched ivf and didn’t have great numbers helped us understand my wife’s situation. He also allowed us to continue treatment even with so many negative results. He gave hope with it happening once before and this really helped our situation.

He even after the 2nd consultation let us try to conceive even with my wife’s infertility. While he gave numbers that were not good for us, the hope of continuing treatment and that she had gotten pregnant once that turned into a miscarriage, that a pregnancy was possible.

Dr. Murray went above and beyond to help me out when other doctors told me that I didn't have a chance of getting pregnant on my own...Her treatments are very affordable....When I came to see Dr Murray she was very understanding of the way that I felt and was more than willing to help me to try and get pregnant naturally. I had been seeing another doctor who basically gave us no hope. I haven't had any luck so far with our treatments with her clinic but they are helping to keep us hopeful and still very helpful to us and keeping us hopeful.

They are very fast at getting you the results and treatments needed. This clinic is open on weekends and holidays to be sure to take card of their patients...Her treatments are very affordable...

I wish she [Dr. Shona Murray] would have been more thourogh in her advice and dug deeper into my dx. I felt as though my treatment was a blanket protocol rather than being customized to my dx and results. She made sure to explain any risks with medications and my husband and I were provided a private comfortable area to discuss everything with her...We started with letrozole as Clomid with previous Dr. Did not look hopeful. Monitored via ultrasound used a trigger shot when Dr felt appropriate. 2 cycles we tried it I with no success. No male infertility factor...Everything seemed non shallant.

[Dr. Polotsky] was always a positive one and he never made us feel that we were burdening him...was never in a rush to begin something that could be considered as an important step...I went on to conceive both of my twin girls...I do believe that [his] bedside manner, professionalism, and his willingness to show up at a hospital before the crack of dawn and walk in smiling is one of the reasons why the IVF was successful the first time
Ovarian cysts were found during my ultrasound [at Advanced Reproductive Medicine] but I was not told that they would hinder me in beginning my cycle as planned. After I was told to go ahead and order and pay for all of my medication, The process was suddenly halted due to the ovarian cyst that I had previously...iNursing staff got to know me by name and always seemed to be knowledgeable of what I needed or where I was at in my care...in regards to the overall waiting room space. It's a little snug...
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
This was a very difficult process for my husband and I for separate reasons. Not only were we taking on a great deal of financial debt it was not a guarantee that this process would work. Dr. Polotsky seemed to absolutely love his job and that is the kind of doctor that we needed at this time. His attitude was always a positive one and he never made us feel that we were burdening him. I want to make it clear, he did not act as if he could perform miracles, he just made sure that he was doing as much as he possibly could to bring us the best chances. He was very thorough in sharing information and always wanted to keep me safe and make the best decision. But hands down, the best quality that he had was his "glass half full" attitude. There were times when I felt that my world was crashing completely down. Sometimes during my process there were certain delays and certain complications and, me being under so much stress, it was very easy for me to feel emotionally down. Then walks in Dr. Polotsky with his smile, positive demeanor, and his light-heartedness. Like some kind of magic trick, his attitude would snap me out of whatever I was feeling and make me smile. I don't know about other patients but for ME, this was a life saver. I went on to conceive both of my twin girls and just gave birth to them on May 4th. I do believe that Dr. Polotsky's bedside manner, professionalism, and his willingness to show up at a hospital before the crack of dawn and walk in smiling is one of the reasons why the IVF was successful the first time! This is something you can't train someone to do, you have to have it deep within your heart. Thank you!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I would say to just schedule the appointment regardless of your fears or doubts about the process. Understand that Dr. Polotsky is going to treat you how you should be treated regardless of who you are, your background, what you look like, or your past.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
He always seemed as if he actually wanted to help. Always maintained eye contact with me and my husband, answered questions fully, and kept a positive upbeat attitude.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
Dr. Polotsky was never in a rush to begin something that could be considered as an important step. I Don't quite remember the specifics but I do know that prior to beginning the final IVF process (I believe it was the retrieval and transfer) he stopped to make sure that my blood work and tests were where they needed to be. He explained that if he didn't see what he needed to see on my blood work then we May have to postpone. Even though this news was hard to hear, I would have rather him do it the right way then try to rush just because I'm impatient.

Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
One comment I have is in regards to the overall waiting room space. It's a little snug and I didn't always feel comfortable having to sit so close to people. I also felt that the paperwork given to patients to sign and/or take home could have been made with better quality. I also feel that it is important to have a very high level of professionalism with a high-performing professional when it comes to explaining the costs of the procedures. I felt that the first person who explained these items was neither.

Ovarian cysts were found during my ultrasound but I was not told that they would hinder me in beginning my cycle as planned. After I was told to go ahead and order and pay for all of my medication, The process was suddenly halted due to the ovarian cyst that I had previously. I had had them since last cycle but I was not told that they would be a problem. My husband and I, doing what the clinic asked us to do, raced to get the medications ordered and sent to our house. Once they were ordered, The doctor stated that I had to now wait another cycle (while on birth control) to see if the cyst shrunk. Emotionally this was very tough.

I felt very plugged into a protocol [with Dr. Edward Illions]...is compassionate and thorough. He's very responsive via the UC Health patient portal and did a good job covering all of my bases, which included typical fertility diagnostic workup and extensive imaging eventually resulting in a myomectomy...It took a while to get in for my consult with him, but I feel like he has a good handle on my case and explaining next steps...
I have the upmost confidence in my RE [at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)] and have worked with several other providers at this location (resident RE, ultrasound tech) who had a great bedside manner. Their office is easy to find. Unfortunately, they run late quite often. The personal conversations between associates at the front desk can carry over into the waiting room area...Even if you thoroughly verify your fertility benefits, there is a chance much of your treatment will be out of pocket and his administrative staff isn't great about assisting with appeals. It took a while to get in for my consult with him, but I feel like he has a good handle on my case and explaining next steps.

Describe the protocols Edward Illions used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
We started with a standard fertility workup - labs for me, semen analysis for my husband, CD3 ultrasound, etc. After 12 months of no success, he ordered an MRI to further evaluate a known uterine fibroid and determined that it was detrimental enough to my cavity to warrant surgery. We were instructed to stop trying for at least 6 months; next step is 3 medicated + monitored IUI cycles

Dr. Polotsky took the time to get to know my wife and I very well, and after the initial tests were run he was very candid about the chances based on my age but also gave us optimism as well. After our miscarriage he called to extend his condolences .... We were pretty up front that we didn't want to go down the route of IVF and he was reassuring that IUI could have a chance and with his help we got pregnant on the first try.
The nurses and some of the doctors [at U of Co] were wonderful. I would say the weaknesses were the residents (or student docs). I had a few bad experiences with one in particular. After having a miscarriage, my first visit back the resident came in first and you could tell she didn't look at my chart at all prior to coming in because she basically didn't know I had had a miscarriage by the questions she asked.
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Same info I typed before but really got to know us as a couple and our wants with our restrictions as well. We were pretty up front that we didn't want to go down the route of IVF and he was reassuring that IUI could have a chance and with his help we got pregnant on the first try. Although we unfortunately lost that baby he was very compassionate and still didn't recommend IVF but let us know the chances of us conceiving with IUI again were still there even though I'd aged more. Luckily with his help and guidance we were able to get pregnant again and we have a beautiful daughter that we are very thankful for his help with!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
He's too the point so listen closely because he can sometimes talk fast but there's no guessing with him. He will tell you what your best chances of success are and you just have to put your trust in him because he knows what he's doing.

After our miscarriage he called to extend his condolences and was very good with me once I returned to the clinic. It was very hard to come back once I had "graduated" to OB doc so he was sensitive to that matter and spoke with me truthfully but compassionately.

We did letrozole for 5 days (I think) after an US at the start of my period, then another US to see if the eggs were there/ready, and then trigger shot to time the IUI appropriatly.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The nurses were good and you could tell they had a well put together system. They were very good at educating me and explaining all parts of the procedure and were very responsive to any phone calls/questions I had.

After having a miscarriage, my first visit back the resident came in first and you could tell she didn't look at my chart at all prior to coming in because she basically didn't know I had had a miscarriage by the questions she asked. She treated me as if it was my first visit as a new patient there and at the time I was extremely sensitive and I didn't have the patience to educate her on my background when it was all in the record. The same resident performed my SIS after the miscarriage and it was one of the most painful procedures I've had and I have an extremely high pain tolerance. Also, being seen by all the different docs during different visits was a little tough since I felt like you just repeated the same question/answers multiple times. I know there's probably no way around that but it would be nice if they took more time to review the chart before coming in.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Each round of IUI was approximately $800 and we did 4. There was also a pretty big cost the HSG and SIS I had as well but I don't recall what they were exactly.

when the follow up consult came the doctor [Dr. Illions] spent more than 10 minutes reading to himself the results of the various tests. I felt like he was unprepared and the comments he did make while reading made it clear he had no recollection of meeting me or performing some of these tests himself...was very straight forward and happy to explain or discuss topics further when asked specific questions. I do feel he was very qualified as an RE and I appreciate him sharing that knowledge so openly.
They are very disorganized [at Advanced Reproductive Medicine] it seemed to me the nurses, front desk, checkout lady, and doctors just don't communicate to each other and instead depend on you to tell them what's happening next, etc. I've never felt that way at any other doctor's office of any kind... For initial consult + bloodwork + FemVue + CD 2-3 labs and ultrasound + follow up consult we paid close to 3k.
How was your experience with Edward Illions at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Doctor Illions was very straight forward and happy to explain or discuss topics further when asked specific questions. I do feel he was very qualified as an RE and I appreciate him sharing that knowledge so openly. I only wish he had taken the time to review our results and formulate what to say to us before calling us back for our follow up consult. That would've gone a long way in making me feel less like a number or complete stranger and more like a human being in which he's met several times and seen all there is to see down there.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Illions at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Come to the appointment with all your questions in hand, he will be open to answering them so don't hold back. Tell him when you feel you didn't get the feedback/results for any testing you've had done.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Illions at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
During the initial consultation I did feel like a human but as the diagnostic testing continued and the follow up appointment came around I felt like a number. The diagnostic testing seemed disorganized. I had to tell them what I thought I was expecting them to do that day when I arrived based on the reading material I had been given. No one ever called me with my test results. I had an ovarian ultrasound and no one gave me any feedback on it what so ever. A month later when the follow up consult came the doctor spent more than 10 minutes reading to himself the results of the various tests. I felt like he was unprepared and the comments he did make while reading made it clear he had no recollection of meeting me or performing some of these tests himself.
Describe the protocols Edward Illions used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
At our follow up consult we were diagnosed with unexplained infertility - meaning he couldn't identify anything keeping us from getting pregnant. That came with a statistical possibility of 1-4% of us getting pregnant on our own each month. With that he recommended we pursue medicated IUI cycles. He explained that with medication (Letrozole specifically) we'd gain another 4% and with IUI yet another 4%. So even with all that our monthly chance of getting pregnant would be around 10-12% or about half that of a normal couple.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The nurse I had the most interactions with was stand offish and cold. On one particular occasion she was disorganized as well. She did not set up the exam room for the correct procedure so she had to enter after I was undressed to put away everything she had out and put out the actual needed items. Then the doctor came in to perform said procedure and it turns out he needed a negative pregnancy test before continuing. So he left, I had to redress, go to the bathroom to provide the sample, and then wait another 10-15 minutes for the doctor to finally return and do the procedure. I'm sure she was having a bad day on this particular day, we all have them but her attitude wasn't great that day or any other day she was my nurse despite me trying to make light of the situation. A better attitude would've helped a lot.
Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Very disorganized. It seemed like no one talked to anyone about anything. On days when I needed labs done in addition to whatever procedure was happening there was no one directing me to the lab when I was done. I'd have to go to the front desk and tell them I still needed lab work done. When leaving you need to schedule your next appointment and that scheduler has no way of knowing what's next for you - you are responsible for telling her. If you feel like you need a guide throughout the infertility experience this is not the place for you. If you have insurance that does not cover infertility they will not cover the diagnostic tests done here (despite being told by staff that they likely would). Their billing code for EVERYTHING includes the word infertility from the very first appointment so despite the fact the doctor was 'covered' by my insurance I had to pay for all appointments, labs, procedures out of pocket.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Illions at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
My insurance simply states they do not cover 'infertility'. This office bills everything under a code with infertility so they wouldn't cover any of it. If this is the case for you I highly recommend you see an OBGYN first as they can run many of the same tests and will use codes that insurance will actually pay for. That's my biggest regret. We had to pay for all costs out of pocket. For initial consult + bloodwork + FemVue + CD 2-3 labs and ultrasound + follow up consult we paid close to 3k. The doctor did order some tests during a specific part of my cycle for which I went to an off site lab to do, these WERE covered by my insurance because the off site lab did not use the infertility code - this was a blessing because it saved us another $700 in labs.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
No one will ever call you with results. If its lab results be sure to sign up for their app so you can see them or you won't ever get them. If its results from an HSG, or other procedure done by a tech you won't hear about them until weeks later at your follow up appointment. They are very disorganized it seemed to me the nurses, front desk, checkout lady, and doctors just don't communicate to each other and instead depend on you to tell them what's happening next, etc. I've never felt that way at any other doctor's office of any kind.

Get ready for the truth [from Dr. Illions]. We had strict guidelines that we had to adhere to every step of the way to keep going. At least 3 follicles before they would do egg retrieval, at least 3 eggs before IVF - everything was very up front...I was on CoQ10 and a high dosage of DHEA going into my first IVF cycle and my 2nd...He was very sympathetic and always straight and to the point. He never led us on to believe that it would work (like another clinic in Denver did) and never lied or said things that would result in us paying more money on a hope and a prayer.

First cycle resulted in 0 Day 5 blastocysts and the 2nd cycle resulted in 1 that was a fresh transfer...At least 3 follicles before they would do egg retrieval, at least 3 eggs before IVF - everything was very up front...I had a ton of questions daily, especially after the fresh transfer. Claire [nurse] always answered them timely and with compassion. There was a time that one of the receptionists was super rude over the phone where Claire apologized and took care of that as well. I could communicate with her over their app at any time and never felt like I wasn't supported.
How was your experience with Edward Illions at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Illions always responded to any questions right away. He was sympathetic and open to answer the same question more then once. We did two cycles of IVF. First cycle resulted in 0 Day 5 blastocysts and the 2nd cycle resulted in 1 that was a fresh transfer. That embryo didn't take so Dr. Illions had to deliver terrible news to me 3 times. He was very sympathetic and always straight and to the point. Describe the protocols Edward Illions used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
I was a straight start protocol because my period is very consistent. Due to prolonged thyroid disease and a thyroidectormy back in January of 2017 - my egg quality was extremely low with a 6 score for my AMH. So I was on CoQ10 and a high dosage of DHEA going into my first IVF cycle and my 2nd. Due to my insurance having a $15,000 lifetime max and being at a a faulty clinic beforehand that took a ton of our money for testing - we were worried about the constant charges. We didn't do PGS testing because we only had 3 embryos the first time (none made it to Day 5 blastocyst) and only 1 embryo the 1st time that we fresh transferred.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO). (Assigned nurse: Claire )

Their nurses are their biggest strength. They are kind, compassionate and make every effort to ensure your comfortable. Their front desk staff could have some work mostly due to dealing with women on a ton of hormones. The embryologist staff were extremely kind and communicated with me often. I was super impressed with the bed side quality coming from another clinic where all they wanted was your credit card number. CU ARM cares about their patients and you can tell they aren't in it for the money.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Illions at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
I had $15000 lifetime max with my insurance. Right now we are looking at around $24K for 2 cycles of IVF and one fresh transfer

Our first round of IVF I felt as if Dr. Polotsky was more involved in my care. He is a great doctor and we felt fully supported. During our first IVF cycle we saw him frequently and he performed all my procedures. This last IVF cycle that we just went through, we only saw him during the consultation. The transfer and all other appointments were with other doctors that I didn't know well. This did cause some anxiety as I was not as comfortable with these other MD's
The strengths of this clinic [Advanced Reproductive Med (U of CO) include, good response time, very compassionate, and knowledgeable. I would say weaknesses is long wait time for appointments and difficulty getting appointments when initially starting treatments. They do their best to work with your schedule but understandably get very busy.... The nursing staff is great at this office. They always treated me with respect and were all very kind. I had a lot of questions and they never seemed annoyed and always willing to help. I always got a prompt response from them if by phone or by email.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. This is a very overwhelming process and it can get very confusing with all the medications you are on and appointments that you need to make. If you are unsure about anything, call the office and speak with a nurse or your MD. They are always super helpful.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I felt as if they took the time to get to know me and my family. He made sure that we were comfortable with all decisions being made and did not pressure us.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
For both cycles, Dr. Polotsky put me on birth control initially to gain control of my cycle. He then had me on Lupron and Estrogen patches. I then transitioned to Estrogen patches and Progesterone oil injections. We implanted 1 embryo as d/t my age can be at high risk for multiples. both cycles were the same.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The nursing staff is great at this office. They always treated me with respect and were all very kind. I had a lot of questions and they never seemed annoyed and always willing to help. I always got a prompt response from them if by phone or by email.
Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The strengths of this clinic include, good response time, very compassionate, and knowledgeable. I would say weaknesses is long wait time for appointments and difficulty getting appointments when initially starting treatments. They do their best to work with your schedule but understandably get very busy.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
The total cost of our first round of IVF was close to $25,000, our second round was ~ $10,000, this is all including medications
Describe Alex Polotsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
If I could go back this last IVF cycle, I would have done my last 2 embryos instead of one as we will not have enough money to go through IVF for a third time. That is my biggest regret as I will always wonder if one of them would have taken. I think this should be taken into account as we have no other options at this point.
What specific things went wrong at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
  • Failed to call with results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
With my last IVF cycle I went in for my pregnancy quant testing and got the results on my phone. I did not receive a call from the clinic or any information as to what the results meant. I could tell that it was negative but felt it would have been helpful to have a conversation about stopping meds or what to do next. The next day I wrote the nursing staff and they responded very promptly and stated that blood tests done at the hospital sometimes are not communicated to them. They were very apologetic and sincere.

My body didn't react much to the Letrozole at first, so he [Dr. Alex Polotsky] upped the dosage and finally got a great reaction...Strengths: If my husband and I ever had any questions, he always gave us a detailed answer to where it was almost a picture for us to understand. Very personable and would make small jokes on the side to make us more comfortable...Weakness: I was questioning what my ability to get pregnant was in the beginning and I didn't get a straight forward answer. As time went on through treatments, my body reacted the way it needed to. He was more than confident at that time and told me that I will get pregnant.
If something was not covered [by insurance], I was informed immediately [by Advanced Reproductive Medicine] and we were able to change our plan of action...Strengths: They are always personable and made me feel comfortable, they never let us leave without any lingering questions or concerns. Weaknesses: Sometimes it would be hard to get ahold of one of the nurses, if I had a question about medications or symptoms. They would get back to me almost immediately and answer any question I had once I was in contact.

He was more than confident at that time and told me that I will get pregnant. I just needed the reassurance that it would be possible for me and didn't understand that he needed to see how I react to the treatments to be able to tell me that I would be able to get pregnant from the start.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
For prospective patients, I would say if they ask the likeliness of them getting pregnant, inform them that once you can see a reaction to the treatments the chance is higher. It will give patients more confidence.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I felt like a human because everyone at the facility took care of me and showed they actually cared about the outcome of my time with them. It wasn't like I went in, was treated and was sent away, they made sure that all aspects were covered and that I was not sent home with any lingering questions.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
Provera if I did not start my cycle myself. Once I was on day 3 or 4 of my cycle, I would go in for an ultrasound to determine if there are any cysts. If none, I would then go on to taking Letrozole in order for the follicles to grow and hope that a dominant one would emerge. My body didn't react much to the Letrozole at first, so he upped the dosage and finally got a great reaction. I would go in for an ultrasound a week or so after taking this just to see if there were any dominant follicles. If there were, I would take an Ovadril shot in order to help me ovulate. By then my husband and I would time our intercourse accordingly. Two weeks later I would either take a pregnancy test or my cycle would start and I would repeat the process.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
All the nursing staff communicated great, they all showed that they cared and were extremely personable. They would give all the information we needed plus any additional if we asked for it.

Dr. Polotsky was very friendly, compassionate and understanding of our fertility problem and anxiety. It took two HSGs and one saline infusion test to diagnose my tubal blockages over an 18-month period, but once we arrived at a diagnosis Dr. Polotsky was very clear on the way forward for us, which was IVF. He took his time to explain everything, and always answered our questions. He would make small jokes on the side to make an otherwise anxious situation light.
The clinic [ARM] is nice, great parking and easy to get in and out of. The clinic is in a nice area and in a clean and easily accessible building complex. A new patient will find the building very easy to navigate. Sometimes the front desk is empty when staffers are on a break so you cannot reach anyone by phone during those periods.... The nursing team seemed like they were interested in doing their job well (which is a good thing), but their service was a bit impersonal sometimes.

He took his time to explain everything, and always answered our questions. He would make small jokes on the side to make an otherwise anxious situation light. But for one or two occasions, I always saw him for my appointments which made me feel like he was knowledgeable about every detail about our case. Husband and I really penny-pinched to get the IVF done, and we were honest with Dr. Polotsky about our finances. We felt his compassion and willingness to help us manage the cost, and even once instructed a nurse to give us Lupron for FREE when I was a hyper-stimulated. I later found out the drug was a whopping $600, and buying it ourselves would have thrown us off budget a bit. Dr. Polotsky mostly called us himself with test results, and even when it was bad news, I felt he tried to sound positive and give hope. My only downside was, during my retrieval, I had a different doctor I had never met. This made me a bit anxious. Everything went well with the retrieval though. I highly recommend Dr. Polotsky.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Be candid about your anxieties and what you want to achieve with your treatment. Ultimately, everyone wants a baby but a lot happens between the first appointment and the heartbeat confirmation. It's a good idea to lay out your expectations of the process from the beginning so you know which expectations can be met and those that will not likely be met. For example, how soon you wish to start treatment, how many kids you would like eventually, etc.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Polotsky was very friendly, compassionate and understanding of our fertility problem and anxieties. He was interested in knowing how we felt about his recommendations, and always encouraged questions (we had many). He would answer every question we had sincerely, although a few times not in the great detail I was expecting but with enough information for us to make a decison. Overall, I felt like he saw me as a unique patient, and everything he did and said looked and felt like he genuinely wanted to help, which I greatly appreciated.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
Mine was a FET for Blastocysts-21 Lupron overlap/patch protocol. I used follistim, cetrotide, menopur, progesterone in oil, estrogen patches and Lupron. Generics were not recommended though.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO). (Assigned nurse: Erica Lewis )
The nursing team seemed like they were interested in doing their job well (which is a good thing), but their service was a bit impersonal sometimes. I had read reviews of other clinics where people with successful IVF results hugged nurses, ordered cakes for them, etc. to show appreciation. I was looking forward to doing same, but I felt like the relationship with the nurses at ARM was not there. Maybe that was a high hope. The Hispanic and African-American ladies who draw blood at ARM were particularly respectful and warm. The Hispanic lady always told stories which made me smile. The front desk ladies were generally helpful. One particular lady (Sabrah) was really nice to talk to, and always tried to help answer questions.

At first [with Dr. Alex Polotsky] we had extensive testing to make sure that there was nothing prohibiting us from carrying a child should a transfer occur. This included EKG, PAP Smear, Ultrasounds, Estrogen and Progesterone cocktail. I had surgery to remove a fibroid in my endometrial lining, waited six months and started injections. Just prior to transfer, acupuncture was recommended before and after transfer and six weeks prior to transfer. Was asked to stop alcohol and caffeine intake as well. The rationale for all of these treatment strategies was to give us the best chance possible to have a live birth and a health child.
The clinic [Univ of CO-Denver] is very accessible offering visits 7 days per week. The response time for a call back was immediate. The clinic was very professional and had a strong set of ethics. The clinic was well organized. My only wish is that they had a location near Lincoln and I25.... The nurse was always caring and took extra time to go over any concerns or procedures.
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Alex Polotsky was absolutely perfect for us. He was very candid yet always maintained hope for a successful live birth. He advocated for our success and made sure that he communicated clearly to us when treatment needed to be altered. Dr. Polotsky was very confident and sure of himself during this whole process which made us feel very good throughout.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I would tell them to listen to him and follow the plan. I would tell them to clearly communicate their desires and wishes on the first visit so that everyone was on the same page.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Polotsky was very sensitive and appropriate when discussing our options and treatment plan. We felt that he and his staff were truly vested in our desire and journey to have a child.

Describe Alex Polotsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Dr. Polotsky gave us the options for a single embryo transfer and multiple embryo transfer but strongly recommended a single embryo transfer stating that given my age and prior deliveries of very large children, that single embryo transfer was his recommendation. The multiple embryo transfer had risk to both myself and the baby and Dr. Polotsky made sure to inform us of his concerns and the risk given my situation.

I had decent experiences with Dr. Polotsky up until my miscarriage.... I was then diagnosed with a missed miscarriage he recommended I come into the office 2 days later. Being emotional and hormonal and wanting the nightmare of being done with my IVF journey (or so we thought) I agreed although I had reservations when he said it would not be with sedation. The procedure itself was human torture...I finally after screaming involuntarily for what felt like forever we stopped the procedure and I had to take meds to finish miscarrying after all. There was no sympathy, no empathy.
Honestly I can't say I remember a single nurse [at U of Colorado]. Most phone calls were from providers...Once they got an ultrasound tech it was simpler and smoother process than the wait that occurred when it was the provider doing all ultrasound...IVF ~$14000 I believe not including meds. They would not run anything through insurance and never told me I could try to submit claim forms...incomplete records sent to New clinic...When I had my miscarriage however I felt like a number.
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I had decent experiences with Dr. Polotsky up until my miscarriage. I'm in the healthcare field and understand there are no guarantees. My first transfer was unexpected and we had never even discussed that a fresh transfer would be an option until the day of. My frozen transfer things were more controlled. When a heartbeat and fetal pole were difficult to obtain at 7 weeks after being clear at 6, he sent to a more specialized ultrasound tech/mfm which I appreciated. However when I was then diagnosed with a missed miscarriage he recommended I come into the office 2 days later. Being emotional and hormonal and wanting the nightmare of being done with my IVF journey (or so we thought) I agreed although I had reservations when he said it would not be with sedation. The procedure itself was human torture. I was given no pain meds, the used lidocaine but didn't even let it work. I finally after screaming involuntarily for what felt like forever we stopped the procedure and I had to take meds to finish miscarrying after all. There was no sympathy, no empathy. I've worked in teaching hospitals for 15 years and am all for residents learning. But on multiple occasions (including my miscarriage procedure which I've asked 2 other REs and they said they wouldn't do that unless a woman was hemorrhaging to death) it was not appropriate to have a resident perform procedures. I can think of a few other cases where the resident clearly had no idea what they we doing and I was a dummy for them to fumble around with.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Remember that we are humans going through something so emotional and hard for something we want so badly. We're not a learning opportunity for everyone.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I appreciated his initial approach and collaboration regarding our case and IVF. When I had my miscarriage however I felt like a number.

He wasn't willing to try just medication and said IUI was the way to go, but didn't really tell us why. We decided to go ahead with his recommendation to try an IUI. Every appointment I saw someone different and no one could fully tell me what we were doing or answer my questions. I felt like a part in the machine-- just another patient to push through. After this treatment failed and we were not happy with how we were treated, we found another office and doctor...
The first time I called [U of Colorado - Denver] to set an appointment I had to leave 3 messages and do an online appointment request before they called me back. Office is nice and clean and in a nice medical complex. We have to drive a few hours to get there so sometimes appointment availability was difficult. All ultrasounds and bloodwork had to be done early in the morning which was very difficult for us to get to. Some of the front desk ladies were not very friendly...
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
I loved our first appointment with him. The second appointment we had to review tests and determine a treatment plan, I felt more rushed and like we didn't have a diagnosis. My questions were dodged and we were pushed into IUI. After the two appointments, I never saw him again-- always saw a resident or another doctor. I was never sure what our diagnosis was or what we were fixing. I felt like I was just another patient being pushed through the process. Some residents were not pleasant.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
He has an accent that is sometimes hard to understand. Make sure you fully understand everything when you meet with him, because you will likely not see him again.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
At our first appointment, he and his intake doctor were very willing to answer all my questions. I didn't feel rushed at all. He said he was so confident that we could get a baby that he would save a spot on his wall for our baby picture. We completed all the testing and things he wanted checked and then went back for a treatment plan. Once we had all our tests results in, we went back and he would never give us a real diagnosis and I felt like things were being hidden. He was very optimistic that we would still have a baby, and that is what I focused on. He wasn't willing to try just medication and said IUI was the way to go, but didn't really tell us why. We decided to go ahead with his recommendation to try an IUI. Every appointment I saw someone different and no one could fully tell me what we were doing or answer my questions. Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
They seemed a little overwhelmed. A lot going on in the front and in the back of the office it appeared. Sometimes I felt like they just wanted me to move on.
Describe your experience with Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Very good about posting self pay prices up front. You get a discount if you self pay. They told me I could self pay and submit to my insurance to see what was covered, but I found it was hard to get the information I needed to be able to submit the things that my insurance would cover. Finally, when it was determined that they were in network with my insurance and were required to submit it, they upped all my costs and it was a nightmare to deal with them and insurance. Seemed shady. The first time I called to set an appointment I had to leave 3 messages and do an online appointment request before they called me back. Office is nice and clean and in a nice medical complex. We have to drive a few hours to get there so sometimes appointment availability was difficult. All ultrasounds and bloodwork had to be done early in the morning which was very difficult for us to get to. Some of the front desk ladies were not very friendly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
I did the self pay option which means they don't submit it to my insurance (but I was told I could do that myself) and I save 40%. I chose this because I wasn't sure what my insurance would cover. When it was determined that they were in network and legally had to submit to my insurance, they upped all the costs and changed procedures. It was a mess. If you were a self pay patient, it would probably be fine. Intake and follow up appointment were each 250$ Semen analysis- $166 Pelvic ultrasound- between 500 and 600 Hysterosalpingogram- 1,200 ish Blood work costs seemed pretty average-- maybe slightly less than other places I have tried. IUI was quoted to be 800 ish, but cost us closer to 1200 because of additional ultrasounds.

They told me I could self pay and then submit on my own to my insurance. When it was determined that they were in network with my insurance and they had to submit the paperwork it was a nightmare. Dr. Polotsky did not take the time to explain the diagnosis and treatment plan adequately enough...Dr. Polotsky always appeared more interested in seeing his next patient than actually spending time with us. The only instance in which he actually spent any time talking with us was after I complained and requested a personal phone call from him. If you are okay with a technician taking care of your reproductive needs, then he may be a good fit, but if you are looking for a relationship, go elsewhere...
[Uof Colorado - Denver clinic] Strengths: cheap. Weaknesses: disorganized, chaotic, unprofessional, and poor communication skills among practice team members...They were incredibly disorganized and overall insensitive. First, the did not send in the prescription for Ovidrel on time in order for me to pick it up at the pharmacy. After navigating the dysfunctional call center, I got a hold of the fellow on call who sent in the prescription. The nurse called later and simply stated that she forgot. Furthermore, after the first round of IUI, the nurse informed us that my wife had an adequate response to clomid. For our second round, a different nurse (we always saw a different nurse!) said that our response to that first round was inadequate. Both nurses had the exact same data (follicle count and size) but with vastly different interpretations...
How was your experience with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Polotsky always appeared more interested in seeing his next patient than actually spending time with us. The only instance in which he actually spent any time talking with us was after I complained and requested a personal phone call from him. If you are okay with a technician taking care of your reproductive needs, then he may be a good fit, but if you are looking for a relationship, go elsewhere.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Shop around, seek second opinions, and make him explain every detail.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Polotsky did not take the time to explain the diagnosis and treatment plan adequately enough. As we embarked on our treatment plan, we received mixed interpretations from his staff on the same information. During one round of IUI, one nurse stated that the response was adequate to the medication while another stated that it was not. Given the lack of communication, mixed interpretation of the same clinical data, we could not trust that this clinic was delivering high quality care.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
I have even more complaints of the nursing staff. They were incredibly disorganized and overall insensitive. First, the did not send in the prescription for Ovidrel on time in order for me to pick it up at the pharmacy. After navigating the dysfunctional call center, I got a hold of the fellow on call who sent in the prescription. The nurse called later and simply stated that she forgot. For our second round, a different nurse (we always saw a different nurse!) said that our response to that first round was inadequate. Both nurses had the exact same data (follicle count and size) but with vastly different interpretations. Additionally, this second nurse told us that "IVF may be unethical", implying futility to even considering this approach. My wife is young (32 years old) with diminished ovarian reserve, but hardly at the point of futility. Furthermore, I am not sure how this clinic allows nurses to render these decisions and recommendations. As Dr. Polotsky is the division chief and medical director, he is ultimately responsible for the education, training, and scope of practice of these nurses and it is unacceptable.

Dr. Polotsky is knowledgeable and compassionate but also honest. He never made told me something would be easy when it would not and was always clear as to what I should expect. I appreciated that because dealing with infertility can be difficult and one wants to be prepared and know what to really expect. False hope can detrimental and diminishing. Dr. Polotsky was always honest about the statistics. And he's incredibly funny. A sense of humor makes a lot of difference to a stressed out patient.
The clinic [Advanced Reproductive Med] was easy to get appointments, even open for some needs on the weekends (blood tests, transfers). I wish they had more than one location as the Aurora location was difficult to get to due to traffic - no fault of the clinic's.... Jodi [a nurse] was very organized, sending me charts that showed what dosage I'd need each day and when appointments should occur.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Ask him anything - he knows what he's talking about and he'll tell you anything you need or want to know.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO)?
Dr. Polotsky always made sure I knew what was happening. He would take the time to call me, even after hours, to explain procedures and discuss outcomes. He was always very positive and made me feel like we would be successful. And we were!
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
I don't remember exactly but I do recall that if I didn't like a protocol (I did not like the vaginal suppositories) Dr. Polotsky would find other ways to make sure I was on track. I was also having an allergy to one of the oil bases for the progesterone and he changed that up quickly as well.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Alex Polotsky at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
I signed up with ARC so most of the costs were covered through that. Of the costs not covered - cyst removal.
Describe Alex Polotsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
Dr. Polotsky recommended single embryo transfer but when I requested double, he did not try and talk me out of it. He only made sure I was aware of the dangers of multiple births so I could make a completely informed decision.

Dr. Polotsky spent so much time with us making sure we understood the entire process and answered all questions. We never felt rushed or pressured into any decision. He also made a point to call me with results or to answer questions instead of just emailing.... He was honest and very compassionate. He made a very difficult experience much easier on us. I would highly recommend him (and have) to anyone going through fertility issues.
Their [Univ of CO] strengths include: good communication, providing good information, staff is personable, assistance with financial resources which is so crucial. Weaknesses: Sometimes it is difficult getting an appointment but they always try to fit me in. This is the only thing that comes to mind as we had great experiences at this clinic.... Every nurse we encountered during our time at this clinic was wonderful. They took the time to teach us about how to administer meds as well as answer any questions. They are all very approachable. We had a good experience.

Dr. Polotsky spent so much time with us making sure we understood the entire process and answered all questions. We never felt rushed or pressured into any decision. He also made a point to call me with results or to answer questions instead of just emailing. This is why we didn't feel like a number. He truly cares about his patients.
Describe the protocols Alex Polotsky used in your cycles at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO) and their degree of success.
This was a few years ago so difficult for me to remember exactly the strategy he used. He was diligent about me coming in for ultrasounds and blood tests to ensure meds were working as they should. I had a very successful egg retrieval and transfer. He made it clear it would be best to only transfer one embryo as I am young and healthy. Whatever he did, he was absolutely right as it worked and we have a beautiful healthy son.

We spent ~ $ 30,000 for all expenses related to IVF including medication for transfer.
Describe Alex Polotsky's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Advanced Reproductive Medicine (U of CO).
I loved his approach. He recommended we only transfer a single embryo because I was healthy and young. He felt that transferring more could lead to multiples which causes a higher risk pregnancy. We had 3 healthy embryos so there was no reason to transfer more than 1.

He was against multiple embryo transfer given my circumstances as we were at high risk for multiples. And he was right, we have identical twins from 1 embryo

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
He [Dr. Polotsky] is compassionate, but also very realistic. He lays out the options and tells you why he thinks one is the best option. I couldn’t ask for a better Dr. He has helped me with testing to reassure me even when he has not made a profit from it.... He had me on clomid and Ovidrel with ultrasound and blood work. We did 3 IUIs and 3-4 medicated cycles without IUI. When we do another cycle he wanted to switch to injectables, however, with the unknown state of my right Fallopian tube he does say I have the best odds with IVF.
They [Advanced Repro Med] are organized and efficient. I have no complaints. When I walk in I’m greeted nicely and then checked in, then I’m told to take a seat. Usually before I even get comfortable they’re calling me back and treating me great!... I paid my copay to meet with him (60) but not for monitoring ultrasounds. IUIs with semen washing and analysis was right around $400 Their IVF is just over 10,000 so we are waiting till we can afford it, who knows when that would happen
