Attention to Detail
Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.
For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.
CDC Success Rates
This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr. Nulsen felt we would have success with the antagonist protocol, and started the next cycle. I was young with regular periods so he didn’t feel we needed the longer protocol...He was surprised that I did not produce more mature eggs during the retrieval, but my AMH levels were on the lower side...He knew all our medical history before even walking into his office. Dr. Nulsen first asked us what our expectations were, and what routes we wanted to take. He was knowledgeable and very kind as we discussed different plans. I had done a lot of research beforehand, and he was patient (and willing) to answer any of my questions.
Monitoring [at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services]...was on a first come basis. Some days you waited a while, and others you did not...The billing office was incredibly helpful in all areas. Especially when dealing with insurance. Our representative was incredibly knowledgeable, and gave us the best advice. We paid out of pocket for our deductible and all medication. We were reimbursed for some of the medication through insurance months later. At the time acupuncture was not offered at the clinic, and we paid separately for that off site.
How was your experience with John Nulsen at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Dr. Nulsen was always warm and devoted to our best interests. He gave his best advice as a medical professional, and we completely trusted he opinions. Never once did we feel rushed. He took the time to answer all questions/concerns until I was completely at ease with our next steps for treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Nulsen at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Trust his expertise. He loves his work and he knows how to do it well.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Nulsen at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?

Describe the protocols John Nulsen used in your cycles at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical) and their degree of success.
After two failed IUIs with 50 mg of Clomid, we decided to go right to IVF. Dr. Nulsen felt we would have success with the antagonist protocol, and started the next cycle. I was young with regular periods so he didn’t feel we needed the longer protocol. Follistim, Ganirelix, and Pregnyl were used for medications. Followed by PIO injections after the retrieval. The Follistim injections were the easiest to handle myself, but the Ganirelix seemed to burn a bit. The PIO injections were painful towards the end with so many different bruises that popped up after 13 weeks. He was surprised that I did not produce more mature eggs during the retrieval, but my AMH levels were on the lower side.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical). (Assigned nurse: Deb Jaksina)
Deb and the other nurses were amazing. They always made sure I was okay (physically and emotionally) and I never felt like an after thought. Each call I made they responded right away, and made sure I was at ease as the protocol progressed.
Describe your experience with Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
The clinic itself moved to a new and beautiful office at the tail end of our journey. The staff is always helpful and patient with anything I needed. You will wait sometimes to see the doctor, or to get blood drawn... But it is only because the staff really does take their time with each and every patient.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
Monitoring was done first thing in the morning. You had your blood drawn, and then you proceeded to the other area for monitoring. It was on a first come basis. Some days you waited a while, and others you did not. I felt it was efficient as it could be given the time sensitive nature of the protocols.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Nulsen at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
Our deductible was pretty high, and that was due before we started IVF protocol. They were able to chunk it into smaller installments throughout the length of our treatment. The billing office was incredibly helpful in all areas.
Describe John Nulsen's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
UConn has a firm approach on how many embryos to transfer based on age and diagnosis. I was younger so it was advised for only a single embryo transfer. I completely agreed. His goal, and mine, was only to create a singleton pregnancy.

Dr. Benadiva always took the time to answer my questions. Not just 1 or 2...I mean 35-45. I've come to his office on multiple occasions with a book full of questions. And he's gone through each and every one with me...He's a quiet man with a singular focus--to help you have a baby. He's going to explain his steps, his procedures, his expectations, and his concerns. He's going to explain what you can realistically expect. But he's not going to be your shoulder to cry on. That doesn't mean that he's not compassionate. It's simply that his goal isn't to comfort you temporarily...
Mornings at the Center [Uconn Ctr Adv Repro S - Farm] can be crowded, but it's a good reminded that you're not the only one going through this. Everyone there is clearly very interested in helping you have a child. I never felt that one of the staff wasn't genuinely concerned with my situation, even those who weren't directly involved in my treatment...

We skipped Clomid as I had tried that with my OBGYN. He tried Letrozole first but I didn't respond. Then, 3 IUI+injectibles. Then ICSI + PGS + eSET. Postive pregnancy test after my first frozen embryo transfer
He started with the less invasive techniques first. Because of my PCOS, he recommended ICSI to help with fertilization and PGS to make sure we transferred the best embryo. He recommended eSET as he's had tremendous success with PGS and didn't want to risk multiples.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical). (Assigned nurse: Glorimar Diaz)
Glorimar was a great nurse. Very knowledgeable and organized. Also explained procedures in very clear detail.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
I have a pretty flexible work schedule, so the monitoring appointments weren't too bad for me. Most were on a first come-first serve basis, but some were scheduled for specific times. Just depended on what needed to be monitored.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Claudio Benadiva at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
It was expensive. Not because of the Center per se, but because of my insurance. They covered 50% of my IVF procedure, but I had to pay for PGS myself. I also had to pay for some of my meds myself because I reached my lifetime cap on fertility meds.

Both a strength and a weakness--This place [CARS] is almost always packed. I know they've implemented new strategies to reduce the morning congestion, which do seem to be working. Everyone working here is really nice and clearly dedicated to helping you have a child. I never once felt like someone I interacted with didn't care about what I was going through...Glorimar was a great nurse. Very knowledgeable and organized. Dr. Benadiva took the time to answer my questions. And I don't mean 1 or 2 questions...I mean 40. We sat in his office and went through every question I had--on multiple occasions. I really liked that his answers were straightforward, too. He never tried to sugarcoat things for me. He saw that I had a problem and he made it his business to fix it.

We skipped Clomid as I had tried with my OBGYN. I started on Letrozole but didn't respond. We moved on to injectibles + IUI. After three failed IUIs, we moved on to ICSI+PGS+eSET. BFP after my first transfer.
The rationale was to try the less invasive techniques first. I have PCOS, and have had 3 miscarriages. Dr. B felt that there was a problem with my egg quality, so he recommended ICSI to help with fertilization and PGS to ensure that we transferred the best embryo. He's had tremendous success with PGS so he recommended eSET to avoid multiples/pregnancy complication.

Expensive--but not because of Dr. Benadiva. It's just the nature of fertility treatments. My insurance stopped covering some of my meds so I had to order them online from overseas.

[Dr. Claudio Benadiva was] Very attentive, compassionate, thorough. Honestly, I almost felt like he tried to not get our hopes up and was very realistic. At each internal ultrasound, he would say things like, "they aren't growing as fast as we would like", or "we many only have a couple viable, so we may need to do another cycle." On day of retrieval he got 12 eggs and 10 fertilized!
[UCONN is a] High volume practice. I was at first very overwhelmed by the number of people I would see in the waiting room, but they got you in and out. However, it felt very lonely in the waiting room. We all knew we were there for the same reason, but no one talked or looked up from their magazine. Wish more opportunity was provided to network with others while going through the process.

It was explained to us and they showed us the microscope pictures that all embroys were of excellent quality. They let my husband and I decide if we wanted to transfer 1 or 2. Two being the best chance to get pregnant but knowing the risk that we could have twins. We had twins!

I felt like a number [with Dr. Benadiva] . Office visits while few and far between felt rushed. Instead of trying to tweak something he went right to IVF. After HSG no other tests to find out why were preformed...I felt he gave more care and consideration to the students with him, than to me and my husband. The patients!...After 2 failed IUI's I asked about either changing med or at least increasing the meds. Nothing was changed. Then he suggested IVF because my husband sperm analysis kept coming in with great numbers
Clinic [Center for Advanced Reproductive Services: UCONN Medical] itself is wonderful...Glori [nurse] is the best. She makes him a good doctor...First IUI he [Dr. Benadiva] went with Clomid because I'd used it with my OB and that resulted in a pregnancy(subsequent loss). After 2 failed IUI's I asked about either changing med or at least increasing the meds. Nothing was changed. Then he suggested IVF because my husband sperm analysis kept coming in with great numbers.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
My IVF cycle was cancelled due to pharmacy not approving meds. That was ok. Not clinic fault. The fault lies with them on they never called to see about a different option. The pharmacy said no, and they never followed up with me. The end.

Dr. Luciano is extremely kind, compassionate, and caring. He asked me where I live, what I do, and all about my husband. Only after did he delve into the details of my fertility.... I found Dr. Luciano to be excellent. He has a wonderful bedside manner which I appreciate immensely. He is very straightforward about results and what to expect but gives over the information extremely kindly as well. He is willing to try anything but has our best interests at heart and makes sure that we're making thought out decisions.
The facility [UCONN] is beautiful and very modern. You have to pay for parking which could be a nuisance but isn't the biggest deal. The wait times are a bit on the longer time but very worth it. The nurses at the front desk are not the most organized and things could take time but they get it done.... The nursing staff is very nice. I found them to be a bit disorganized but I was impressed with their facility and Dr Luciano which made up for that.
How was your experience with Anthony Luciano at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
I found Dr. Luciano to be excellent. He has a wonderful bedside manner which I appreciate immensely. He is very straightforward about results and what to expect but gives over the information extremely kindly as well. Come in knowing you'll have long wait times but receive the very best care possible.

I rarely saw him [Dr. Claudio Benadiva] and most of my communication was with his nurse Kathy. He seems knowledgeable and was friendly. The doctors who did my retrieval’s were nice as well. The nurses made he difference though.... He was airing on the side of conscious with the levels for my meds since I have previously conceived and carried a child to term. Although I would have liked to try and higher dose to yield more eggs since our insurance was changing and IVf wasn’t goinf to be covered. I only ended up with two mosaic embryos that round. Second round was a little more aggressive and we did end up with two normal embryos.
[UConn Medical's] Strengths: large clinic, easy to get in and out of Weakness: cost for self pay, pressure usbto use an agency for surrogate despite our wanting to go independent due to cost and because we have found our own carrier (hopefully)... The nurse was fantastic. Always patience, answered questions and was present.... Cycle with meds and patial insurance was about 5k, embryos testing 1,500 (x2)

I really appreciated Dr. Benadiva's bedside manner. I never felt uncared for but he was always matter of fact...I very much appreciate upfront and honesty. This was not the time I wanted any false hopes or my doctor to tell me what I wanted to hear...He shoots right from the hip. If you need coddling throughout the process, Dr. Benadiva isn't the doctor for you, but I 100% appreciated that about him.
I never felt like a number [at UCONN Medical Center for Advanced Reproductive Services]. He or any member of his team were there to answer any questions I had...Started with Levothyroxine and my dose was adjusted several times. I was on 150 Menopur, 300 Gonal F, Ganerelix and 1 ML PIO injections. I am currently 8 weeks 3 days with twins...Everyone was fantastic.

Dr. Nulsen always made us feel that we mattered and he was here to help us achieve our goal. Made sure we understood what was expected. We didnt feel like a number of statistic. He knew us by name and that made us feel like he thought of us beyond being a patient.... He suggested only 2 embryo transfer each time. And ICSI was the choice of treatment.... He cares and will make you feel like a person and not a statistic.
They [Center for Advanced Reproductive Services] will treat you with so much compassion during this difficult process. From the doctor to the phlebotomist and receptionist all were amazing. Highly recommend staff. Some may have moved on but I'm sure the quality of care is still intact.... It was very expensive. It was very difficult for us to continue our of pocket once the age of 40. My insurance in my state would not cover. I have 2 embryos still in storage in hope to use.

Despite not having a positive pregnancy yet, we feel 100% comfortable & confident in Dr. S. hands. He has a bed side manner that I thought didn't exist anymore, always going above & beyond to make sure we are comfortable with our treatment....He has never rushed a phone conversation or an appointment, always answering every question we both had.
Strengths: Their open 363 days a year, value our overall health incorporating programs like yoga at the center. Veronica on Dr.Schmidt's team is one of their strongest assets, she's gone above & beyond for us! Weakness: The long waits for morning bloodwork & ultrasounds, understandable but still long...I have always felt a personal connection & investment from Dr. S. Dr Schmidt was warm and caring, the three times we went to him for care he knew who we were, he knew how many kids we had from previous rounds, we felt known. He was always very candid...maybe would sometimes joke to much, but thats only if I have to find a negative... He always made sure we knew what to expect for all our care and timelines of how things should go
All the doctors [at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services] work as a team, so you may not see only your doctor for procedures or tests or for scans during your cycle. Dr Schmidt maybe would sometimes joke to much, but thats only if I have to find a negative. One example would be our first scan of our twin pregnancy, trying to figure out if we were having one or two. He said "oh its just one, no wait it's two, no no its just one. Nope definitly two." He always made sure we knew what to expect for all our care and timelines of how things should go.

Dr. Schmidt is a very warm doctor who you feel really cares about the outcome for you...you do not see your doctor as much as you see the nurses and staff. I am ok with this but I can see how some people could feel like a number...I really enjoyed sitting down and speaking with Dr. Schmidt. He always has a smile on his face and seems to bring a positive vibe with him in the room. He really took the time to sit with my husband and I and to explain everything in detail with us. This process can be very difficult and especially when things aren't going as you planned having a good doctor behind you is key.

I really enjoyed sitting down and speaking with Dr. Schmidt. He always has a smile on his face and seems to bring a positive vibe with him in the room. He really took the time to sit with my husband and I and to explain everything in detail with us. This process can be very difficult and especially when things aren't going as you planned having a good doctor behind you is key.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of David Schmidt at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
I would just let them know that you see the staff a lot compared to your doctor. The doctor is reviewing everything every time you go, but you do speak with the staff more times than the doctor.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with David Schmidt at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Dr. Schmidt is a very warm doctor who you feel really cares about the outcome for you. At the center all the nurses and staff really are a huge part of care and you do not see your doctor as much as you see the nurses and staff. I am ok with this but I can see how some people could feel like a number.
Dr. Benadiva was very open about the possible risks with a multiple embryo transfer and strongly encouraged single embryo transfer...He has taken the time to personally call when changes occur in the plan...has been great and thorough throughout our time seeing him. He is very straightforward and open about any concerns that he has. He is always willing to provide input in order to better help us make a decision.
The financial aspect of the Center for Advanced Reproductive Services can be frustrating to deal with, but the doctors and nurses are what keeps is coming back. They are compassionate and show that they truly care about their patients...Dr. Benadiva was very open about the possible risks with a multiple embryo transfer and strongly encouraged single embryo transfer...He has taken the time to personally call when changes occur in the plan

Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)
[Dr. Benadiva] was clearly competent and was really helpful in directing my care, but in the 8 months I was being treated at the clinic, I met him twice. If you want a hands on doctor, he’s not it. I did feel like he was working behind the scenes in my overall treatment plan and I know whatever happened had been run by him...The visits were also pretty quick with him which for me was fine, but just something to know...
[our UCONN nurse] was always willing to answer any questions I had and I always got a return phone call when I left a message...Since I was doing iui, my lesbian status didn’t really routinely come up. But at the clinic my partner was always welcomed and we were treated as any other couple, which was nice...Overall they were fine. The atmosphere was warm, and I rarely ever felt like just a number (only on weekends when the usually staff wasn’t there). The front desk staff was professional and treated me with kindness, and the check-in process was efficient.

Don’t expect him to spend lots of time with you during each visit he sees you. He is friendly, but also very efficient.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Claudio Benadiva at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Each time I see him, it was clear he knew my case and medical history, but he wasn’t super warm. The visits were also pretty quick with him which for me was fine, but just something to know.
Describe the protocols Claudio Benadiva used in your cycles at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical) and their degree of success.
The first three cycles of iui were done with the use of Letrozole and me charting my own hormones through the use of at home fertility monitoring. When the hormones were right, I went in the next morning for insemination. After the third cycle with no luck, Dr. Benidiva did a dye procedure and learned that one of my tubes was blocked. Fine, but I wish I had known that earlier so we could better time my cycles. The cycle after the dye procedure was a bust, I ovulated on the side that was blocked. The next month we tried a fourth time and this time we also did daily blood work and ultrasounds to more precisely time my ovulation…and it worked!!
How competent was Claudio Benadiva at LGBTQ+ care?
Since I was doing iui, my lesbian status didn’t really routinely come up. But at the clinic my partner was always welcomed and we were treated as any other couple, which was nice.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical). (Assigned nurse: Leah S)
Leah was the best!! She was always willing to answer any questions I had and I always got a return phone call when I left a message. She was kind and compassionate when things didn’t go as planned and she celebrated with us when they did! I can’t say enough good things about her! I also appreciated that if she was ever off work for a day, someone was covering her phone and I never felt I was left hanging out to dry.

How competent was Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical) at LGBTQ+ care?
They were. It didn’t ever catch anyone off guard (that I saw) that I was in a lesbian relationship, my partner was always warmly welcomed, and even when I visited singly no one ever forgot that I was a lesbian (or they didn’t ask me about my husband).
Describe your experience using 3rd party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier) at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
Mostly fine, although they do truly leave it up to the patient to call and let them know a shipment of donor sperm is on the way. If you don’t, you’ll get a frustrated voicemail from the donor sperm coordinator about how you’ve inconvenienced her. They let you know up front it is potent responsibility, you just can never forget. The process of buying the sperm and sending it was seamless, and there was never a time I worried it wouldn’t arrive or be handled appropriately.

he [Dr. Schmidt] is so kind and thoughtful and caring. He takes as much time as you need to make you feel heard, supported and educated on your treatment options....He did not give me false hope, didn't make undue promises or say anything fake, but he did give me enough hope that they would be able to find a way to get me pregnant...one round of IVF using antagonist protocol, ER and fresh transfer...
They [Center for Advanced Reproductive Services] are a big "shop" and they do see tons of patients but that works in your favor because they are open all the time and can be pretty flexible. I've read of other clinics putting patients on BC so that they can time cycles starting with Drs. schedule/availability. This is NOT the case at CARS given how much production they are used to...
How was your experience with David Schmidt at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Dr. Schmidt really is the best doctor. He is kind, compassionate, communicative and a good listener. He mentioned to me once that he was a glass-half-full kind of Dr. and that some of the other Drs. were different - this I noticed and completely appreciated. He did not give me false hope, didn't make undue promises or say anything fake, but he did give me enough hope that they would be able to find a way to get me pregnant. I really trusted Dr. Schmidt, not just to make a good treatment plan but also to perform any necessary surgeries. I had a hysteroscopy and the ER & transfer with Dr. Schmidt, the hysteroscopy and ER being under anesthesia and the former being at UConn, but I felt so safe in his hands. I could go on and on about how much we loved Dr. Schmidt and I would 100/10 recommend him as the best Dr. at CARS (although to be fair, I'm sure all their docs are great).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of David Schmidt at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Dr. Schmidt does talk a fair bit - but if you are paying close attention he usually answers all your questions before you ask them. However, a good practice for any Dr. is to come with your questions prepared and don't be afraid to politely interrupt to ask/confirm/clarify.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with David Schmidt at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical)?
Dr. Schmidt is the absolute best - he is so kind and thoughtful and caring. He takes as much time as you need to make you feel heard, supported and educated on your treatment options.
Describe the protocols David Schmidt used in your cycles at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical) and their degree of success.
I went into the Center not wanting to jump in IVF and Dr. Schmidt was very receptive. First, we did testing (HSG, bloods, TV ultrasound, etc) and a polypectomy/hysteroscopy. We then did 3 rounds of IUI with letrozole 2.5mg by this time I was ready to move to IVF so we did one round of IVF using antagonist protocol, ER and fresh transfer. It was sucessful.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical). (Assigned nurse: Jenny is the clinical nurse, Peggy is the IVF nurse)
Both Jenny and Peggy were amazing! Jenny, the clinical nurse for IUI, was so very compassionate and even though she wasn't my active nurse when I got pregnant via IVF when she found out I was pregnant she came (into the u/s room) to tell me how happy she was for me. She was also clear, organized, detailed and helpful. Peggy, the IVF nurse, was also compassionate kind, organized and detailed although she was a little more brusque personality-wise (but to be clear, this did not impact her ability to be kind and compassionate!). All of the other nurses and techs (u/s techs, blood draw techs, etc) were great for the most part! There were a few blood draw techs who didn't do a great job and the draws were really painful, but most techs were great (as well as kind and compassionate).

I went into working with CARS a bit afraid it would be an IVF mill, but I did not find that to be the case in the end. They are a big "shop" and they do see tons of patients but that works in your favor because they are open all the time and can be pretty flexible. I've read of other clinics putting patients on BC so that they can time cycles starting with Drs. schedule/availability. This is NOT the case at CARS given how much production they are used to. I think, depending on your doc, it's possible to get lost and feel like you aren't getting as much personal attention as you want, but I didn't feel this at all. Set your expectations that you won't talk to your Dr. regularly, but you can contact your nurse during regular business hours and they either will have your answer or will check with the Dr. and get back to you. There are also on-call nurses/Drs. for the weekends but I never needed to contact anyone after hours.
Describe the costs associated with your care under David Schmidt at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
They have a great pre-paid/non-insurance pricing. I had insurance that covered our IVF cycle completly. IUIs we paid out of pocket and were $699 for our income range. IVF would have been $12k out of pocket, for our income range, not including meds.
Describe David Schmidt's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Center for Advanced Reproductive Services (UCONN Medical).
Dr. Schmidt was very clear that they really work hard to avoid multiples. He told me that they would not transfer more than 1 embryo into someone under 35. I do not know what they would allow if I was over 35 or if I had had a failed transfer.
