Attention to Detail
Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.
For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.
CDC Success Rates
This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr.Stelling liked to joke and would mumble through treatment and any answers we had questions to, but didn't explain in great detail and would just be as vague as possible and pushed it along. He also would say things such as how insemination and intercourse isn't much different, later changing to tell us that insemination is definitely better. He also make it sound like a choice, and never informed us that they could both be done. When my wife asked about a pain she felt, he quickly brushed it off and didn't explain what it could be...
the greatest weakness [of Island Fertility] is lack of communication in any way for everything with patients, what tests you're taking, explaining the results, etc...When we saw nurses (and we still don't know if we had a specific nurse or not) they only explained that we needed another appointment and quickly left the room if we didn't stop and force them to answer what the last blood test was for or what's going on. How was your experience with James Stelling at Island Fertility?
As stated before, Dr.Stelling liked to joke and would mumble through treatment and any answers we had questions to, but didn't explain in great detail and would just be as vague as possible and pushed it along. He also would say things such as how insemination and intercourse isn't much different, later changing to tell us that insemination is definitely better. He also make it sound like a choice, and never informed us that they could both be done. When my wife asked about a pain she felt, he quickly brushed it off and didn't explain what it could be.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Joke less, explain more. Give the steps needed in detail to patients asking. If a patient is looking for the best success rate, give that information honestly and openly, don't wait until a patient spends 2k (as we did) or more then asks about it before saying it's more successful or you can do both. The goal is to create life, not joke about how you "got your sister pregnant, but I'm not from west virginia", Focus on giving all the information needed for patients first.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Never given explanations in any detail as to what tests were for, never told what to do to improve diet/health for fertility, semen results were never explained at all even after being asked, never told about the trigger shot, what it was or what it was for, only told to order it and then told about it on the day of ovulation by another doctor. When asking medical questions, never given any explanations in any detail. The doctor joked more than provided actual medical info. The front desk was extremely mean and rude to us, we were never informed at what appointments to make and then the check out woman would have a mean attitude when we told her we didn't know. Nurses almost never explained what blood tests were for or what was happening, only that we needed to make another appointment. Dr.Stelling told us that there isn't much of a difference between insemination or intercourse, then after timed intercourse failed he changed to say that insemination was definitely better. We would show up never knowing what we were there for until the moment they drew blood and we had to ask clearly. It was an extremely stressful and horrible experience from the beginning when they treated us as though we knew everything already. .
Describe the protocols James Stelling used in your cycles at Island Fertility and their degree of success.
I really couldn't say in any detail since he never went into depth about it and just quickly brushed past it all as though he was explaining something we already knew and had to say it fast.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Island Fertility.
When we saw nurses (and we still don't know if we had a specific nurse or not) they only explained that we needed another appointment and quickly left the room if we didn't stop and force them to answer what the last blood test was for or what's going on. Only once did we see a NP and she broadly went over a couple of things, but we didn't see her again and it was short and basic enough.
Describe your experience with Island Fertility.
I can't see many strengths at all to be honest. Weaknesses are far too many to write here, primarily the greatest weakness is lack of communication in any way for everything with patients, what tests you're taking, explaining the results, etc. And it would be nice if people didn't have a dismissive attitude, but what's more important of all is communicating with patients about their care clearly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at Island Fertility.
Unknown at this point for the first month since it was covered by insurance. Once fertility care began they charged $2100 for each cycle with 6 visits, whether or not we got to see him. We were not able to schedule an appointment with him and were told to just ask to see him if we were there.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Island Fertility.
I have stated earlier that protocols and tests were never explained, sometimes in depth, sometimes not at all which affected our personal actions for a successful outcome.
Dr. Stelling is extremely knowledgable and very patient. He has no problem answering as many questions as you have and explains things thoroughly. He does not have a big ego and therefore has no problem with you questioning your treatment plan. If I had any urgent needs he would always respond quickly to me via phone call or email. Throughout my process he has always been kind, reassuring, positive and empathetic...

Dr. Stelling always remembers his patients and their information. He always reviews your results/chart before speaking with you. He understands how difficult IVF can be and empathizes.
Describe the protocols James Stelling used in your cycles at Island Fertility and their degree of success.
I used Menopur 75 & Gonal 200 for retrieval. We also used ICSI due to severe male factor.

Describe the costs associated with your care under James Stelling at Island Fertility.
Our insurance covered most of the expenses. I had copays for every visit and the medications. Also paid out of pocket for PGT testing which was around $5,000.
Describe James Stelling's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Island Fertility.
Dr. Stelling encourages younger patients with no history of re-occuring loss to do single embryo transfers which is what I did. He explained it is recommended for the the health and safety of mom and baby. He does multiple embryo transfers based on specific medical criteria/age.
What specific things went wrong at Island Fertility?
Dr. Stelling made sure to discuss my case with me, not general protocols or treatments. The visits felt tailored to my specific situation and goals...managed by medical care as well as my expectations and fears. He might talk faster than any doctor I've had before, but was always willing to slow down and explain again if asked. Our numbers didn't look great on paper and we knew from the start what we might be facing, but things worked out faster and better than expected
There was issues along the way [at Island Fertility] with the office providing accurate information about my coverage. This resulted in quite a bit of extra stress on multiple occasions. I spoke to the practice manager, who seemed understanding and promised resolution, but there was no follow through there. This does not to me take away from the care, but something to keep in mind that you are largely on your own to figure it all out.
How was your experience with James Stelling at Island Fertility?
We had our consultation with Dr. Stelling via telemedicine, as it was in the middle of the early pandemic. He spent 50+ minutes with me and my husband that day and when the call ended my husband the skeptic said "he's our guy!" I felt that way after each visit. Through the ups and the downs of the process, Dr. Stelling managed by medical care as well as my expectations and fears. He might talk faster than any doctor I've had before, but was always willing to slow down and explain again if asked. Our numbers didn't look great on paper and we knew from the start what we might be facing, but things worked out faster and better than expected. After one round of IVF I'm currently 15 weeks with a healthy baby boy. Incredibly grateful to Dr. Stelling for making this dream a reality for us.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Stelling at Island Fertility?
Don't hesitate to ask him to repeat himself, he doesn't ever seem to mind. It's more important to understand.

OCP, Menopur 150 and Gonal 300 6 days, add Cetrotide 5 days, just Cetrotide last day, then HCG if I remember correctly.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Island Fertility.
Dr Trivax was very open to transferring two embryos . Especially in my case where we just wanted one to be a healthy pregnancy...always had a an amazing way of keeping me positive and uplifted after a failed cycle . He always took the time to talk to me , tell me all the pros versus cons out of cycles , what we would do next , what we can do differently . He always told me I will become a mother , my Road is just unfortunately a bumpy one .
I was always able to schedule my monitoring appointments [at Island Fertility] to coordinate with my work schedule . Usually they liked blood and sono done before 10am so it could be sent out for results later in the afternoon. I never EVER had a scheduling conflict and was always accommodated...My total cost for IVF not including meds was $10,000 . This included , retrieval anesthesia , transfer...I definitely feel that there are way more strengths than weaknesses for Island Fertility . The office itself is a little cold in the waiting room , I think that’s mostly all fertility clinics . They pretty much run on time for all monitoring appointments with a glitch here and there . My only issue I would say is to request to see the doctor of your choice on each monitoring appointment , if you don’t they will have you speak with a different doctor and sometimes that can leave you unsure of your protocol or results .
How was your experience with Bradley Trivax at Island Fertility?
Dr Trivax is an extremely knowledgeable, compassionate doctor . He made me feel comfortable with every decision my husband and I had to make . If it was not for him , I would have given up a long time ago . He explains every procedure in depth , makes you feel calm & confident about upcoming surgeries/procedures . I have referred two friends to him , both felt the same way and wound up pregnant . If I had insurance coverage I would love to remain his patient .
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Bradley Trivax at Island Fertility?
You will never go any where else once you get to know Dr Trivax . Request him for all monitoring appointments .

My first IVF that I did with another clinic was a fail . Being that I have a low AMH , they surpressed my ovaries so much I had no follicles . When I started my first IVF with Dr Trivax , I voiced my concern about my previous cycle so we tried the “ antagonist approach . I was on Femara 2 pills per day , 225 units of Follistim , 150 units of Menopur , and after 7 days we added two doses of ganarellix twice a day until retrieval , and also an HCG trigger shot . This cycle was succesful with 6 mature eggs retrieved , 4 fertilized , 3 made it to day 5 . I transferred one AA Embryo 5 days after retrieval , I was successful and stayed pregnant until 10 weeks , unfortunately I had a missed miscarriage due to a chromosomal abnormality . Due to insurance coverage and my age we did not to PGS . For my IUIs we also tried injectable meds , either gonal f or follistim in conjunction with Femara . I had 4-6 follicles each IUI but no pregnancy .
Describe your experience with your nurse at Island Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Fran , Sam , Annette )
The nursing staff of Island Fertility , I don’t even know where to start . I’ve been with these women for two years and although I wish I’d be able to leave them , I love them all . Everyone was always rooting me on , telling me positive things after each procedure , ( this is it I know it ) ( yiur going to be pregnant I know it ) and regardless if it didn’t happen , the way they helped me stay positive was what mattered . When I had bad news , they would tell me to call at anytime with questions or concerns . If I had a bad day and would be upset in the office , they would personally come over and talk to me and hug me and tell me everything will be ok . I’ve built relationships with these women and I truly felt they wanted me to succeed and all were so supportive and there for me !

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Island Fertility.
I only ever had one issue , and that was whenever I would call . I asked for results to be faxed over to a MFM and when I arrived for my appointment they did not have the results . The situation was quickly rectified when I called Island Fertility and let them know .
She [Dr. Safier] explained our course of treatment well. As a nurse I know and understand the medical aspect. She took the time to thoroughly make sure my husband understood what was going on too.... she has answered every concern and weighed every option with us. She made it clear that she wants us to get pregnant just as much as we want it. Not just another doctor pushing pills and treatments “hoping” for the best.
The nurses [Island Fertility] are amazing. The medical assistants are ok.... Insurance coverage was explained and then copays were not thoroughly explained I suppose. I was told one fee for testing and another for seeing the dr. So days I didn’t see the dr and only had labs drawn I was paying both fees. In perspective it’s a lot less than someone without great coverage. Just unclear.
How was your experience with Lauren Safier at Island Fertility?
She explained our course of treatment well. As a nurse I know and understand the medical aspect. She took the time to thoroughly make sure my husband understood what was going on too. With a hiccup regarding testing that requires surgery now, even though I was ready to do IUI this month, she has answered every concern and weighed every option with us. She made it clear that she wants us to get pregnant just as much as we want it. Not just another doctor pushing pills and treatments “hoping” for the best.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lauren Safier at Island Fertility?
She listens so don’t be afraid to talk things aloud with her and ask all the questions no matter how small or stupid you think they are.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lauren Safier at Island Fertility?

Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Island Fertility.
The nurses are amazing. The medical assistants are ok. There’s one that I can’t stand. She doesn’t listen and always ends up sticking me over and over for labs until she finally gets someone else after hurting me. I know I’m tough and I’ve been drawing blood for over 10 years. I’m not a wimp or anything like that. It’s like she forgets there’s a human on the other side of the needle and not just a specimen.

I was told I could have my salon sono and follicle count same visit. I made the appointment and the day before someone called and said no because of billing reasons. I work nights and this is a commute for me. So to have to go in two mornings in a row after working all night is a lot. And the appointments are usually running a little behind. Still not sure if it’s because of insurance or greed.
he [Dr. Bradley Trivax] was able to help my wife and I have our baby, after many years of trying...Kind, compassionate, sense of humor, attentive, skilled, and motivated to help. As a patient, we were treated like gold. Honestly, I have no complaints about this man, nor suggestions for better care. He really walked us through everything perfectly AND helped us achieve all we wanted.
Egg Retrieval and IVF [at Island Fertility]. As well as Fibroid removal...Clean, aesthetic, and bright. Sometimes frustrating wait times. Be prepared to have some flexibility in scheduling, even though that can be hard. Also, be clear in what you are looking for and make appointments in a timely manner, so you have first dibs on certain times, because they can fill up fast...[nurses are] Attentive, caring, considerate, respectful, and kind.

BEST DOCTOR- Have no idea how anyone could leave less than 10 stars for Dr. Trivax. He is a kind, funny, and SKILLED doctor who truly cares for his patients, their needs, and their wishes. He provides the best possible outcomes for them. He has given me immeasurable gifts over years of care with him. First, and most importantly, he was able to help my wife and I have our baby, after many years of trying. He really has magical abilities. He also effectively has been treating me for a large painful and persistent fibroid. I had surgery previously with a different surgeon and the after-effects were less than pleasant. With him, the post-surgery effects were super minimal... I barely knew I even had surgery. I don't know how he does it. But this man is a miracle. Thank you Dr. Trivax!
