Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
IUI with donor sperm as a single mom. She [Dr. Noyes] perscriped chlomid for the second cycle to increase chance, which made sense. Based on factors like my age, insurance coverage and financial concerns, Dr. Noyes helped me determine a treatment course including 4-6 rounds of IUI with and then will consider IVF...is straight and to the point. She listens well and adapted care to my particular needs. The nurses at her clinic are great, they are caring, warm, and treat me like person. They are very good at staying in touch and remembering details about me - both those relevant to treatment and personal details. Doctor Nps
Great nursing staff [at Northwell Health]. Good compotent doctors. However you dont always see your doctor at every monitoring/scan, some times another doctor is on duty. The billing/insurance department is a little less helpful. They are satisfactory and do their job, but are not as good communicators (curt answers without warmth or detailed explanations - you have to be assertive and ask a lot of questions)...They are wonderful. They are warm, fun, professional, very organized, they stay in good touch and give clear instructions, with compassion. Highly competent team.
How was your experience with Nicole Noyes at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr. Noyes is no nonesense, which I appreciate. She is clear and frank. She listened well to my goals, concerns and questions and adapted treatment accordingly. She was helpful in thinking through options that were best for my lifestyle, budget, insurance, age etc. She inspired confidence.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nicole Noyes at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Advice for seeing any doctor - take time before going in to your appointments to organize your thoughts and list out your questions, then make sure to go through them systematically with the doctor.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nicole Noyes at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?

In 2010, due to a cancer diagnosis, I froze my eggs with Dr. Noyes while she was at NYU. Now, nearly 10 years later and having lost my ovaries, these are the only eggs I have and my only chance to have a child. Dr. Noyes has since moved to Northwell - Lenox Hill, so I reached out to schedule an appointment. The admin staff told me that Dr. Noyes "likes to take extra care with her cancer patients," which made me feel great, but the "care" truly stopped there.
cannot recommend the Northwell clinic given the true lack of professionalism and administrative competency they have consistently shown over the last six weeks...I've since moved out of state and needed a phone appointment...The day my of appointment, I called the clinic an hour before to confirm who should call whom, etc., and found out that her admin had never actually scheduled my appointment at all. There was nothing on the books for me, and they couldn't make time for me. I was enormously disappointed.
How was your experience with Nicole Noyes at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
During my egg freezing in 2010, Dr. Noyes was warm and compassionate. I had no idea what to expect - I was 24, facing a serious cancer diagnosis, had never considered my fertility, and was simultaneously preparing for (and then recovering from) a bilateral mastectomy and preparing for chemotherapy. Dr. Noyes was reassuring and had a very good understanding of how to fit my treatments together. I had a condom break while preparing for egg retrieval (i.e. a time when I would be hyper-fertile) and Dr. Noyes handled it thoughtfully and sensitively, creatively suggesting an IUD which would be able to block any implantation without compromising my one chance at egg retrieval, and provide me with birth control during the 5-10 years I would need to be on cancer treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nicole Noyes at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Unfortunately, I would have to advise a prospective patient not to work with Dr. Noyes due to the terrible experience I had with her new clinic at Northwell.
I've since moved out of state and needed a phone appointment. Her admin could only schedule one for three weeks out - no problem, I understand that she's busy. The day my of appointment, I called the clinic an hour before to confirm who should call whom, etc., and found out that her admin had never actually scheduled my appointment at all. There was nothing on the books for me, and they couldn't make time for me. I was enormously disappointed. The admin tried to pass the buck to someone else in the office, but did become apologetic when I reminded him that it was him I had spoken with to schedule initially. He said he would try to squeeze me in for an appointment the following Monday. I rearranged my schedule to make that time work. That Monday, the admin called to tell me they hadn't gotten my records from NYU yet, so I couldn't have the appointment. I was shocked -- they had a month to do this, and there should be very well-established channels given that Dr. Noyes just moved over in January of this year. The admin told me he could reschedule me for the following day at 3:30. I, again, rearranged my schedule to accommodate, but told him I had an appointment at 4:30 I could not move, and would need to be in transit by 4PM, but my husband and I would both rearrange our schedules so we could be in the car together to continue the appointment if it was longer than a half hour. The next day, I received a call from the admin at 3:30 telling me that Dr. Noyes was running late, but he would call me at 4 to tell me how things were going. At 4:07, he called and told me that she'd be on the line "soon." At 4:15, he came back on the line to tell me that the cost of the appointment would be $75. I was livid - reminding him that he had my credit card already, and that at this point I only had fifteen minutes to speak with Dr. Noyes. He put me back on hold, and at 4:24, I hung up the phone, since a five-minute consult would have been useless. No one from Northwell or Dr. Noyes' office has contacted me since to apologize or offer an appointment, and it has now been another week. I had a great experience with Dr. Noyes in 2010 at NYU, and wish her well on her new endeavors, but cannot recommend the Northwell clinic given the true lack of professionalism and administrative competency they have consistently shown over the last six weeks.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Nicole Noyes at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
At one point, I was told my consultation would be $125 (with my insurance), then was later told it would be $75, but that due to clinical errors, the coordinator would "cover it" (whatever that means). However, I was never able to actually be seen by Dr. Noyes despite spending hours of time over 6 weeks on hold with her admin staff. I'm still holding my breath to see if they'll send me a bill anyway.

When first met he [Dr. Singer] took the time to study all our recordes/results and stated IVF w PGS will help and once we have embryos we will see by the transfer how sevire is the ednomiosis. When we had 2 losses, he said it the edno and blood issues . Recomended Gestational carrier to not loose these hard to create pgs healthy embryos. ... Used Letrozole with a 450 gonal F and 150 menupure which made more eggs and less side effects.
[Monitoring Appointments] You signed in and based on the order people came they were seen without consideration to the appointment time ... Nice renovated clinic [Northwell Health], they try to move paitents quickly in the morning, you only see the doctor if you request if not an image technion does the ultrasound. Sometime mornings are crowded can take up to 2 hours of wait. Prosidures done in Grate neck Northwell clinic, they provide a car service.

Dr. Tomer suggested the use of Clomid to increase egg/ follicle size during my IUI cycles. Although he suggested IVF, he supported our decision to try IUI first. He provided what information he had it turns of financial information for IVF but still respected our decision to try IUI...Dr. Tomer Singer was extremely warm and friendly. Although he was very honest and realistic with his expectations and possible outcomes, it was done with empathy and compassion..
Nursing staff [at North Shore] greeted you by name during visits and responded to questions or concerns in a timely fashion. They are very friendly and made you feel comfortable when asking questions or when i called to inform of failed IUI cycle...Location and hours are extremely accessible and convenient. I was even able to reach someone during holiday hours, Christmas eve...Nursing staff assisted in locating trigger shot at a lower price since the shot was not covered by insurance.
How was your experience with Tomer Singer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr. Singer was very candid when meeting with my husband and i . However, he was sympathetic and kind when addressing our situation and gave us all of our options even if success rates were low. As a man, he was able to support and reassure my husband who was reluctant to receive treatment for our infertility or even attend an appointment. He consistently reassured us and gave us support during our failed cycles.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Tomer Singer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?

He provided what information he had it turns of financial information for IVF but still respected our decision to try IUI. I came in and did blood work and then used the trigger shot to ovulate. Insemination was done about 36 hours post trigger shot the first cycle and about 26 hours post trigger shot the second cycle (my recollection of the timing may be off). Unfortunately both cycles did not result in pregnancy.

Dr Singer was very kind and compassionate. He seemed very overworked and we would wait a long time in the waiting room to see him. But once it was our turn he spent a lot of time with us ...Rather than adjusting my protocol, he blamed the ivf not working on the fact my embryos are abnormal. He pushed for PGS but we never got enough embryos on day 5 for it to make sense finacially. It was very frustrating to go through 3 ivf cycles at 31-32 years old and be told over and over all my embryos are abnormal.
Dr Singers office [North Shore] in NYC is small and crowded. It’s annoying to drive to Long Island for weekend monitoring and all ivf proceedures....The nurses were fine. No complaints. They were nice, seemed frazzled most of the time and overwhemed..... The clinic itself was fine...Seemed understaffed and Dr Singer was running around from patient to patient to the point where he was literally sweating. He needed more help and probably a new set of eggs on my case.
How was your experience with Tomer Singer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr Singer is a wonderful person who seems to really care about his patients. However, he thought Id be an easy case and I was far from. Rather than adjusting my protocol, he blamed the ivf not working on the fact my embryos are abnormal. He pushed for PGS but we never got enough embryos on day 5 for it to make sense finacially. It was very frustrating to go through 3 ivf cycles at 31-32 years old and be told over and over all my embryos are abnormal. When I did switch clinics, I did do PGS for the first time and 7/10 of my embryos were normal. I do not think Dr Singer was willing to look for another answer so leaving his clinic was the right choice for us.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Tomer Singer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
I think this goes for any clinic and any doctor, but my advice is know when to move on. Doctor Singer was the first doctor I saw and was convinced if he did not get me pregnant, then no one could. After 3 fresh ivf cylces and 4 transfers I finally went somewhere else and did end up having a child after two ivf cycles there.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Tomer Singer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr Singer was very kind and compassionate. He seemed very overworked and we would wait a long time in the waiting room to see him. But once it was our turn he spent a lot of time with us and was very kind and compassionate. When I had a miscarriage he seemed upset and gave me a hug.

I was on very high doses of meds for my age. 300 gonal f, 300 menapur. I have no idea why that was my dose or rational behind it. I got 10 eggs, 13 eggs and 15 eggs during my 3 cycles.

I have to think their lab is not as good as the top in the city. I believe their lab director left during my time there. Dr Singers office in NYC is small and crowded. It’s annoying to drive to Long Island for weekend monitoring and all ivf proceedures.

I did the Attain IVF money back program. That was a flat cost for 3 cycles. Money back if no success.

Tomer Singer is knowledgeable and extremely caring. I always felt like I was in good hands. He gave great advise and was sensitive to all of our concerns. He had incredible bedside manner. Could not recommend him enough!... [Eset Approach] Singer explained all the pros and cons of both. We transferred two for the first transfer and had a miscarriage. The second round we only did one transfer and it worked!
The nurses [Northwell Health] and Dr. Singer were great. I had a lot of confidence in their advise, knowledge, etc. The facility had open hours in the mornings before work and weekends out in Long Island. The provided car service to Long Island for procedures. The front of the office staff was a little flustered and disorganized.... Dr. Singer and his team were so careful and sensitive with the stresses of infertility and their treatment. They were also all very patient. I never felt like a number.

[Dr. Singer is] a nice guy, but not sure if I trust him enough to go through a cycle with him. He sounds like a car salesman more so than a doctor when he described the procedures....I waited 3 hours to see Dr. Singer. My appointment was at 10 a.m. but I didn't see him until close to 2 p.m. So NOT considerate to patients...I was very disappointed after seeing him and spoke to him during consultation.
RaChel [nurse at Northwell Health] who I had spoken with during consultation was nice, but when I called to get some bloodwork results some other nurses who answered the phone was not very nice...They were not up front about co-insurances and co-pays for genetic testing and radiological imaging tests...The wait time was way too long! I feel like they don't value patient's time. If they valued their patients time, I wouldn't have had to wait 3 hours to see Dr. Singer for a consultation on my first visit. Not to mention their front desk, no one ever answers to make an appointment or to change appointments. How frustrating!!

Dr. Singer is very personable and warm. Always smiling and very patient. His nurse practioner Molly was also great - they treated me more like a human and not just another patient.... Dr. singer was great the couple of times I met him. He performed one of my IUIs and it was the quickest and easiest one. He [Dr. Tomer Singer] is great and very detailed, but sometimes I did feel his practice was getting so big and there were too many patients for him. Morning Apts always are on time and quick but the afternoon Apts always ran late

It was very systematic, we didn't feel supported by the doctor [Dr. Cohen]. We needed encouragement, a positive outlook and the treatment to be tailored towards our medical needs and how my body was responding to the treatment. Instead we received one protocol, no options and the doctor never assessed any further. When the IVF was unsuccessful, I had to reach out for assistance, the doctor never called to follow up.
She [nurse at Northwell Health] was helpful and responsive. She was warm and made efforts to assist us through this process. She explained information and had patience...I requested a copy of my entire medical records and it took two weeks of harassing them to finally receive it...Sometimes it was quick other times there was a wait time...Strengths-clean, several locations in Long Island, Queens and Manhattan. Weakness-wait time during apts., some staff were insensitive and delayed in responding to messages or requests, with the exception of the nurses.
How was your experience with Matthew Cohen at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
He was informative and delivered knowledge. Unfortunately, he was not able to help us and we felt unsupported throughout the process and after the failed treatments by him. During my requested follow call after the failed IVF, he stated over the phone his opinion that if the next treatment didn't work out that he would suggest not trying anymore and failed to provide any medical information as to the reasons for his recommendation. This was very hurtful to us and it has taken me over one year to find myself emotionally ready and available to try fertility treatments again.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Matthew Cohen at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Ask questions as to the different protocols available and whether they fully rule out possible medical conditions that might contribute to the outcome of treatments.

Dr.Rausch seems nice and she is data driven. I appreciate how she does not sugar coat and she will tell you how it is. I just wished her communication between patients was more accessible...The three failed transfers that I had, Dr.Rausch never called me. The nurse called to give results. And when I wanted to speak with Dr.Rausch I needed to make an appointment with her.
The clinic seems very disorganized. Very difficult get someone on the phone. You call and leave messages and they call you back hours later. Lots of phone tag. Sometimes I don't even get a return call till the next day. They also don't check their email daily so if you email them you may not get a response till days later...Be prepared to ask questions and advocate for yourself. No one will hold your hand there. If you are not on top of them, you will get lost.

For my first FET I was doing a natural transfer. I've been going to the clinic daily for morning monitoring and bloodwork and not one person mentioned to me I will need supplemental progesterone. So the day before transfer which was a Saturday, a covering nurse calls to tell me to start progesterone that night and by that time, my pharmacy was closed. So I was unable to start the progesterone that evening. There was another incident with my third medicated FET when I was unable to answer the phone regarding my PIO dose and when I called back the nurse wasn't sure if I needed 1ml or 1.5ml. Also when I had RPL labs drawn,my initial results came back abnormal but they repeated 2 days later and the results were normal.. so it must have been a lab error. You will not view results, there is no portal. And they do not email you results unless you ask for it everytime. We never got results from my husband second semen analysis until I had another consult with Dr.Rausch few months later. I was also never told I had a chaotic embryo till months later.

He [Dr. Matthew Cohen] handled me with delicate hands. He knew that I had a very hard uphill battle, with my advance age and he let me down easy...He is very good at what he does and I feel safe working with him. I feel that I am not being lied to just to get my money. I have referred a close friend and her husband to Dr. Cohen, who was also going through infertility. They had a successful outcome with the doctor.
My only problem with the [Northwell Health] clinic is, its very hard to get the receptionist on the phone to try to schedule an appointment or get information on which covering doctor is in on that day. I often leave messages and the receptionist stills does not call me back. That’s why I call my nurse on their direct line...nursing team was very encouraging. Holding my hand throughout the entire process. They always took my calls and made themselves available to me whenever I needed them.

We used Gonal-F, Menopur and Cetrotide during both of my cycles. I must say that I got very good results with them. Dr. Cohen was able to retrieve a total of 19 eggs in all and created 6 embryos. Unfortunately because of my advance maternal age, my embryos were not viable.

... he [Dr. Scholl] is very traditional and is not willing to customize individual treatment plans for my body. I asked him about less aggressive ivf and he completely ruled it out and said he believes its a waste of time and that the traditional ivf treatment would be more beneficial. I just do not believe in the one size fits all treatment model. My treatment needs to be individualized to my needs. I have suffered a miscarriage at 20 weeks( pre term labor) and at 6( heterotopic miscarriage-blighted ovum and an ectopic pregnancy) leading to the loss of my left fallopian tube.
I wish they [Northwell Health] acted as though they knew why you were coming to receive services. We as patients are putting our trust or lives our life savings into the hands of these providers. The least you would expect to compassion. ... I felt more like a number at times when i I would have my visits. Majority were with the NP snd rarely saw provider. I felt that my treatment was not tailored to my lab results.it was more of a one size fits all model.

With age comes knowledge which he has but he is very traditional and is not willing to customize individual treatment plans for my body.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gerald Scholl at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Be prepared with questions and provide input in your treatment plan
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gerald Scholl at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
I felt more like a number at times when i I would have my visits. Majority were with the NP snd rarely saw provider. I felt that my treatment was not tailored to my lab results.it was more of a one size fits all model.
Describe the protocols Gerald Scholl used in your cycles at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish) and their degree of success.
I did 3 rounds of clomid. 1st was with clomid 5 days and iui with insemination, 2nd and 3rd were clomid with intercourse with partner. 3rd resulted with twin pregnancies but miscarried at 6 weeks
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Busy and never really had time to speak about treatment plan. Everything seemed rushed
Describe your experience with Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Large pool of providers to select from however you feel more like a number than a person. I wish they acted as though they knew why you were coming to receive services. We as patients are putting our trust or lives our life savings into the hands of these providers. The least you would expect to compassion.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Gerald Scholl at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
$40 copayment every vist. Sometimes 3 times a week appointments. IUI cost about 6k but insurance covered. My ivf i would have to pay 20% of cost
Describe Gerald Scholl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
I would select single embryo transfer due my history of cervical of incompetence.

When I first sat down with Dr. Cohen he first explained to me why the human body preforms the way it does. And that no amount of medicine or modern technology can change that. With that said, he laid out for the reason why it would be extremely hard for a women my age to get pregnant naturally with my own eggs. He told me this information in a way as if he was letting me down easy and not to have high expectations. He was not rough by saying, “you too old to get pregnant”. He did recommend using donor eggs, but at the same time he did not force it or say to me that this was my ONLY option.
I would tell any person coming into this clinic [that the fertility clinic and the laboratory that maintains the sperm are 2 separate entities. I would tell them that they would have to be on top of the laboratory to ensure that they have the doctor’s orders that the it is followed exactly. ... When my partner left his sperm sample, the Laboratory was to analyze and store his sample. Instead the lab analyzed and threw out his sample by mistake. We did not know this until the day before retrieval. Because of my partner work schedule (he works for MTA) he just could not get off to come with me the next morning to produce sperm while the doctor was retrieving my eggs. Which is why I would tell anyone coming in that they should stay on top of the lab.
How was your experience with Matthew Cohen at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr. Cohen strengths is the way he approaches his patient’s. He’s very caring and careful with his words in describing an outcome that may not occur. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Matthew Cohen at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
With the number of years he has in this profession, I would tell them to consider all of his advice and follow it. And understand, that’s he’s trying to help you get pregnant and not discourage you from starting a family.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Matthew Cohen at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
He treated me with kid gloves. As an expert in this filed he told me delicately that because of my age the expectations will not be good. But at the same time he was very encouraging because of my AMH levels which is high for a women of my age.
Describe the protocols Matthew Cohen used in your cycles at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish) and their degree of success.
Usually in a women my age, my AMH would be low and my FHS would be high. But because my levels were good, Dr. Cohen was more excited than I was to start treatment. This encouragement from him made me feel more enthusiastic about starting fertility treatment regardless of my age. On my first round of treatment, Dr. Cohen had me on 300 iu of Gonal F and 150 of Menopur per day. He did this for about 12 days (I can’t remember the exact number of days). Again his rational for this protocol was because my AMH levels where 1.1. He was able to retrieve 13 eggs.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish). (Assigned nurse: Vahida Gilic, RN)
Very informative and walked me through each progress step by step. Called me every night to see how I was doing on the medication. She was concerned about any side effects. She was also very encouraging because my of AMH levels.
Describe your experience with Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
I would tell any person coming into this clinic that the fertility clinic and the laboratory that maintains the sperm are 2 separate entities. I would tell them that they would have to be on top of the laboratory to ensure that they have the doctor’s orders that the it is followed exactly.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
You could go in between the hours of 7 to 11 for monitoring, but I always made sure I have an appointment for 7:00 am. One time, I was not able to get an appointment until 7:30 am. I did this so that I could ensure I would get seen and leave the clinic by a certain time because I still had to go to work. If you did not have an appointment, you had to wait but was still seen.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Matthew Cohen at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Since my insurance only cover 80% of treatment my co-payment was $4,000. My insurance does not cover fertility medication, which $8,000.00
Describe Matthew Cohen's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Because of poor egg quality, we were not able to transfer any embryos.

He [Dr. Avner Hershlag] showed no confidence in us conceiving with our own eggs. We went forward with ivf and never during stimulation he called or adjusted the protocol or explained alternatives. I felt his agenda was to push us to donor eggs. He seems to be a nice person but I am not sure he cares about anything but numbers. I know women who had success with him but don’t know details about their cases.
[Northwell Health is a] Factory! Run as soon as you can. Look for a compassionate climic where they can personalize your treatment. Although I went early morning, there was always a lot of waiting time. You get called loud. No privacy. The waiting room doesn’t have a warm feeling; fear rules - you can see it on everybody’s face.
How was your experience with Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
He showed no confidence in us conceiving with our own eggs. We went forward with ivf and never during stimulation he called or adjusted the protocol or explained alternatives. I felt his agenda was to push us to donor eggs. He seems to be a nice person but I am not sure he cares about anything but numbers. I know women who had success with him but don’t know details about their cases. On the day of retrieval we found out that somebody else would to the retrieval, which was never mentioned before as a possibility. We would have appreciated more explanations and given alternatives about protocols. He also never mentioned some women are poor responders and that it is possible for a cycle to be canceled, so when I heard something about canceling during monitoring (nurses talking among themselves but none bothering to explain to me) we lived in fear until the retrieval actually happened. Another thing I didn’t appreciate was Dr H never mentioning acupuncture although we asked him about things that could potentially help. Subsequently I found out he does send other patients to acupuncture. Dr H seems very rigid with ivf approach, ignoring the fact that one protocol doesn’t fit all. I never felt my treatment plan was personalized to my own needs. If you want to see him, you need to schedule an appointment, otherwise only nurses call you back. If you need to reach him during treatment per se, forget about it - there is no direct number or email you can reach him to. After the first ivf cycle we wanted to try another one so called for an appointment. At that time we were told that Dr H is not with Northwell anymore. I am sure he knew he was leaving, but never told us. Months later on we received a letter in the email. Overall very disappointed with his care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Don’t waste time; look elsewhere
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
It seems the clinic overall cares only about numbers. All they do is referring to statistics when in fact each of us is a unique case. Donor egg option was mentioned from the very first consultation after knowing the AMH was very low. It was us pushing to try with our own eggs.
Describe the protocols Avner Hershlag used in your cycles at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish) and their degree of success.
Low AMH - Microdose lupron, gonal, menopure. Initially they told me I had 7 follicles that became 4 on the retrieval day and one egg was retrieved, which fertilized and was transferred fresh on day 3.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish). (Assigned nurse: Don’t remember the name but it’s irrelevant because she went on vacation, never mentioned that to us and then we struggled leaving voicemails hoping to be called back)
The originally assigned nurse went on vacation. We struggled to find others but regardless none of them was easy to get in touch with even with direct contact number. You call, leave a voicemail and maybe get called the following day. Northwell Manhasset is a factory, they are so busy that you never get personalized interaction or feel anything but a number. None of the nurses bothered to explained to me canceling the ivf cycle would be a possibility, everything was so confusing….

No privacy. The waiting room doesn’t have a warm feeling; fear rules - you can see it on everybody’s face. Not encouraging…. You have to pay everything upfront. My second cycle was canceled but was able to received a refund in several weeks. There was nobody available to ask questions after hours. I had communication issues even during working hours - very difficult to get hold of somebody.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Lot of waiting time, they call late with results, not consistently the same time and you are always stressed not knowing when they call back
Describe the costs associated with your care under Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Insurance covered most of it. I had to pay approx 3500 for a cycle excluding meds, which were expensive

We only had one embryo

When I decided to switch clinics I asked for my medical record. I eventually got something - not the full chart with the protocol though - but it took a lot of interventions and calls. I still don’t have all my info….

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
He [Dr. Hershlag] was very uplifting when I would see him. He spoke in ways that were easy for my husband and I to understand. He was also very determined that I would end up with a pregnancy via donor egg. He assured me not to worry and that he would make the process easy and not stressful. I have had previous experiences with another doctor that wound up not being successful with two transfers. My husband and I were devastated. Dr.Hershlag made us feel better about going forth using him in hopes to have a successful pregnancy. Along the way, I had other issues that came up during the process and without hesitation he told me to come into the office with no appointment. He took care of me immediately. My husband and I can’t wait to go back to him to finish the process of becoming parents using donor egg. We did have to put the process on hold due to the costly expense of using donor eggs.
I highly recommend this clinic. The only thing that did seem to bother me at times was the length of time I had to wait. He was always booked with patients (even though that is a great sign) because he is very well known. The place was always very clean and everyone was very helpful. ... [Nursing Staff] Everyone was excellent and was always available when I needed them.

He told me to keep track of my sleeping patterns because I wake up in the middle of the night with hot flashes due to my very high hcg levels. This would help to control the amount of estrogen I needed to be on to control them.

My co payments from my insurance were 50 dollars a visit. Donor egg costs range from anywhere between 12,000 to 40,000 depending on if we use frozen or fresh eggs.
Describe Avner Hershlag's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
He told us that he would only transfer one embryo at a time. Said doing multiple transfers can very well wind up with multiples and he does not recommend that because there is a higher risk of complications.

[Dr. Mary Rausch] was with me from day1 of my diagnosis through graduating to my ob for now baby #2. She has been a great doctor every step of the way...has now gotten me pregnant twice. While she is busy (as all doctors are) I felt that she was there for me (or one of her colleagues) every step of the way through ivf...I was monitored daily during egg retrieval because I had a lot of eggs. I ended up hyper stimulating, which delayed embryo transfer 1 month. I trusted dr rauschs decision to delay transfer. She also recommended pgs, which I am extremely glad I did, as it made me feel comfortable declining genetic testing while I was pregnant (which in some cases result in miscarriage). Finally she only recommended transferring one embryo, which I continue to be very happy with. Nurse
The Clinic [Northwell Health] was great. only weaknesses are some administrative headaches: calling could be challenging to get a hold of the nursing team (auto prompts that send you to nobody), and I had some issues with medications getting sent to the wrong pharmacies, resulting in the need to rush order/pay out of pocket for some expensive meds. Otherwise beyond some administrative headaches, the clinic was amazing, the staff was warm and friendly, which helped immensely getting through a very difficult time...nursing staff was excellent...I was monitored daily during egg retrieval because I had a lot of eggs. I took clomid for a few days and Ovidrel the night before the IUI procedure [with Dr. Hershlag]...I saw the Dr, twice. Once for a consultation and 2nd for my results...After my treatment didn't result in a birth, I never received any feedback or communication from him or the staff on next steps....he doesn't give you additional information unless you ask the right questions and KNOW your stuff!...I never received a clear diagnosis or explaination on what exactly is the reason for my infertility.
The nursing staff [at Northwell Health] seemed nice but over worked and very busy...Infertility drugs are expensive and I wasn't given options to different pharmacies to consider based on my insurance...Their weakness and my recommendation are that doctors and nurses need to spend more time with patients and make sure they explain patients' diagnosis and treatment options. This is sensitive and difficult time for women, in which we are also confused. Having a compassionate team who seems like they want you to win this battle.

The second cycle the only thing he [Dr. Hershlag] did differently was stim me for a day longer and lowered my Menopur a little...He was on vacation throughout my first cycle and I have no idea who was in charge of stimming and triggering me...I don’t believe there was a specific strategy... my two egg retrieval’s were basic protocol...He preferred eSET. The first FET was eSET because it was PGS/PGD normal and the second one we put in 2 embryos because 1 didn’t have enough data from the biopsy to be tested and we only had 2 left to transfer anyway. He didn’t want to do this but we insisted. Both FETs were failures and both had at least one PGS tested embryo transferred.
The place [Northwell Health] is a factory and if you want very individualized personal care your not going to get it here... There are times when the nurses and doctors expect you to know what they’re doing and they don’t explain anything. You need to stop them and ask questions. You have to keep on track of the treatment plan as often times the nurses and doctors will ask you... “what are we doing again”. Very reassuring when your paying $17,000 out of pocket for treatment.
How was your experience with Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr. Hershlag seems to have good intentions, however has way too many patients that he can’t remember what he’s doing with everyone. There were several times where I had to remind him what we were doing which was very frustrating. All he had to do was take a look at notes from our previous meeting to prepare himself but he doesn’t. I’m just a number to him. Only really saw him for my embryo transfers. He didn’t do one of my egg retrieval’s and a nurse practitioner did my IUI... never saw him throughout both stim cycles or IUI cycle. I feel like my care was just basic protocol and not geared to me individually. The place is a factory.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Make sure you go into a meeting with him with written down specific questions and take notes of exactly what he says. Don’t let him rush you into a decision. Ask follow up questions. You have to be your own advocate.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
The clinic is like a factory. I have barely seen my actual doctor less than half the time I’m there. Dr. Hershlag never reviewed my file prior to meeting with me and forgot everything we discussed and the plan of action we finalized moving forward. The nurses were the only ones who knew everything and treated us like humans.
Describe the protocols Avner Hershlag used in your cycles at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish) and their degree of success.
I don’t believe there was a specific strategy... my two egg retrieval’s were basic protocol. The second cycle the only thing he did differently was stim me for a day longer and lowered my Menopur a little. First cycle we got only 1, 7day old embryo and second cycle 3, 6-7 day old embryos. We had a total of 22 eggs retrieved, both cycles combined. The first egg retrieval I was triggered with only 1,000 units of hcg which is why I think I barely had any mature eggs (4, from 12). The second cycle I was triggered with 10,000 units of hcg and had 6 out of 10 mature eggs. He was on vacation throughout my first cycle and I have no idea who was in charge of stimming and triggering me. Also first egg retrieval was done by a dr I’ve never met from the other clinic location.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish). (Assigned nurse: Jackie)
Nurses are very sweet and caring. Sometimes it’s difficult to get in touch with the nurse or clinic for that matter when you have an important question. I felt like my nurse was my dr and that I barely had a doctor. She did make one major mistake by sending the wrong requisition form to the PGS lab. This was resolved but created a 2 week setback for my first embryo transfer.
Describe your experience with Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
The place is a factory and if you want very individualized personal care your not going to get it here. I’m not sure about the other doctors in this office but with my doctor you just simply didn’t get it. You will be many of the other doctors during your time here and some are better than others.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
It was a factory... come on in between 7-8 am for blood and sono. Some days you would get in and out fast, others you would wait an hour. It’s hit or miss.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
Our first ivf cycle was a PGS/PGD cycle that cost us $17,000. Meds are not included and that cost us about $4,000 (which we paid twice because we did two egg retrieval’s). The second egg retrieval was $10,000 because we had some credit from the first cycle. Our lab testing for 4 embryos (PGS/PGD) was $4,600 (coopergenomics). The first FET was included in the price and second FET was $4,000. Anesthesia for each egg retrieval was $500 each time.
Describe Avner Hershlag's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
He preferred eSET.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
There were two times during the two cycles I’ve done where the office just didn’t call me with my stim protocol or leave a message so I had to guess to take the same dosage of medicine from my stim the previous day. They say I will get a call by 5pm but if you don’t then the office is closed and there’s no one to get in touch with for the answer. The clinic also sent the wrong requisition form to the lab for my biopsies. They sent them to be banked and not tested, meanwhile we wanted them tested and were prepping with Estrace for our FET. The clinic told us to call the lab for results and when we called they said they had no results becaue our clinic never told them to test the biopsies. They eventually tested but it set back our transfer for 2 weeks. I was very disappointed with our clinic after this.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Hershlag made it knows that he prefers a single embryo transfer but before transfer he asked if we want single or multiple embryo transfer... always gives you a hug when he sees you and makes you feel that your success is very important to him... He makes me feel like I am his only patient, although it’s not always the case. Some visits he will ask a question that makes me feel like he doesn’t remember anything about me and the protocol he put me on. I do however understand that it is a very busy clinic and he can’t remember every detail about everyone unless he checks the chart. I wish he does check it before seeing me so that I don’t feel so confused at times.
Jackie [at Northwell Health] is a great nurse but she is always busy and running around his sometimes she seems to care about you and sometimes she doesn’t. However, every time I need an answer on something I would email her and she would always answer or call back. I never had to wait for more than an hour for her response. She is great at that...After the egg retrieval the embryologist called with number of fertilized eggs and number of embryos but nothing else. How many were natural how many were ICSI’ed we had no clue. Questions were brushed off. We did not learn about our embryo grades after 2 failed transfer when we made an appointment to see Dr. Hershlag so he an explain to us. That was the only problem with this clinic, that part needs to be communicated better.
How was your experience with Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Dr. Hershlag is a good doctor, no doubt. I feel confident to be under his care and believe in him. When my transfers did not work, he changed protocols each time which made me feel like he is proactive and is trying to achieve my pregnancy. After 2 failed transfers we asked for additional tests so we don’t go to the last embryo transfer blindly but he didn’t seem like he was eager to do it at all. I did not like that. Overall, he is a great doctor and I trust him I just wish the clinic wasn’t that busy so he could spend more time thinking of tests and other protocols that could change the outcome. In the end, I trust him and hope to be successful with him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish)?
Ask questions and do your research. If you don’t understand something ask again. If you feel brushed off ask again. You are doing a major work so any answer that doesn’t explain anything needs to be asked again until you feel comfortable.

The staff is great and they are super nice to you. They remember you by name and always eager to help. However, it’s a very busy clinic so sometimes you are waiting for more than an hour. I think they are doing their best but it’s just impossible sometimes.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
It was great if it wasn’t too busy otherwise you would have to wait a bit. I always made it to work on time though. No complains
Describe the costs associated with your care under Avner Hershlag at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
My insurance only covered diognostics and IUI, IVf and medication is out of pocket. $17K for cycle, $9K for medication so far, 1st transfer included, 5K per transfer after that, $300 per embryo for PGS.

Through the course of our IVF treatment, we only met with Dr. Hershlag twice over a period of 5 months. Often it was a struggle to receive timely and accurate information....Dr. Hershlag was not present for a large majority of our process. During the initial consult he did not take the time to thouroughly explain IUI or other options we could look into. We had recently experienced a miscarriage and I felt this was not investigated enough. After testing my sperm and simply telling us they were an “A plus” he looked to set us up on the IVF schedule. He did not perform any of the sonograms or even the egg retrieval, or even once bother to schedule an appointment to check in.
The nursing staff [at North Shore] constantly seemed rushed and overworked. We repeatedly had to explain recent medications taken, problems with orders and other issues over and over, due to a lack of continuity...The office staff, nurses and doctors are extremely difficult to get on the phone. We experienced wait times of twenty minutes certain days. ...It was a packed office and a cattle call...review all billing carefully.

The office staff, nurses and doctors are extremely difficult to get on the phone. We experienced wait times of twenty minutes certain days. Furthermore, the nurses did not accurately and efficiently communicate our medication needs to the pharmacy, which cost us additional expenses. There is not enough staff to deal with the volume of patients.

I was sent to a urologist to check my prostatitis, given antiobiotics to treat a minor infection, and not checked before sperm donation again to make sure the infection was gone. We were instructed to use follistim, estradiol, progesterone in oil, and HGC shot.

Terrible communication. No one mentioned the office would be closed for Martin Luther King day, which happened to be a key date for instructions in our process! After investigating this in person I was told someone should have picked up the phone and called you back. No one did. Expect to wait up to two hours if you have a Monday afternoon appointment. Please review all billing carefully.

One of the biggest struggles was this clinics inability to communicate with CVS special care and give them authorization to ship our medications. My wife and I were constantly on the phone because they called in the wrong doses.

I feel doctor singer is very kind and professional. I think he knows what he is talking about and very educated in all things IvF. He is direct and to the point and views the process as common. Although I like Dr. Singer I feel his bedside manner is lacking. I think he could be more compassionate and make a point to see a patient more than just at scheduled procedures. I met him at my first consultations and then not again until he was needed for my procedure.
The strengths of this clinic [North Shore Long Island Jewish] are the many locations. They have offices, 1 in manhattan, 1 in garden city, and 1 in manhasset. The nurses, andrologist, and sono technicians were all very kind caring and helpful. The nyc clinic is understaffed which makes for very long wait times. Each appointment I’ve waited atleast an hour to be seen. The front desk reception girls are over worked and thus can come off as rude. They are also not fully educated on the procedures and timelines. As a whole the office can feel frantic due to the under staffing which leads to less personal care.

I am currently in my first cycle so I am unable to provide results. We will be using my husbands sperm which was retrieved through tese surgery and frozen. I will be taking FSH injections 150 and 150 of HMG. We will then do an egg retrieval and hopefully do a fresh transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish). (Assigned nurse: Melissa)
Melissa was amazing. She herself went through Ivf so was very understanding and easy to talk to. She was sympathetic and good at communicating next steps. Unfortunately she was over worked and overloaded with patients so the care would have been even better if this were not the case. Regardless she was caring and I really like her.

He's [Dr. Hershlag] kind, compassionate and knows what he's doing. We didn't get off to the best start, but he grew on us. We waited almost 2 hours our first time and he didn't even apologize. I was also in denial about my infertility. Once I started my first cycle I felt more like I belonged there....He likes to give hugs to all his patients...Cycle 1 was birth control protocol with 300 follostim and 150 menopur, garinelix and hcg trigger. 11 egg retrieved all mature, 7 fertilized, 6 blasts, 1 pgs tested normal embryo. Cycle 2 was microdose lupron and the above meds. Estrogen was high so stopped lupron.
Calling the main number is annoying, but once your assigned a nurse you get a direct number. I also have the financial adviser and patient liaison for my doctor on speed dial. Everyone is super friendly. Once you start cycling you get to meet everyone...My nurse [at North Shore Long Island Jewish] was on top of everything and always got back to me when I left a message. I always felt better after talking to her. All the nurses there are great.

Ask a lot of questions as he [Dr. Singer] is extremely knowledgeable but initially just goes over the more general “summary”...He explained everything patiently and thoroughly. I texted him over a weekend with a question to which he responded instantly. He is very smart and has exceptional bedside manner...is always smiling and enthusiastic but also realistic about the whole process.
All the nurses and staff [at North Shore] were kind, compassionate and helpful...All [nurses] were thorough though some felt a little inexperienced. I never felt they weren’t completely in control...The nurses lost my pap results which were sent over before I started. I was asked several times about if it was sent - to which I confirmed it was in fact sent and reviewed with the nurse - before I was asked to have it resent. A solid week. The retrieval was on a Friday morning. I was told I’d get results on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. No one returned my calls Saturday or Sunday but I did get a call on late Monday with the results.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwell Health (FKA North Shore Long Island Jewish).
The nurses lost my pap results which were sent over before I started.

I feel that a doctor should take the time to follow up with his patients especially after experiencing a loss like we did, by him [Dr. Hershlag] not reaching out it made us feel we were not important to him and had us looking for another clinic...When we reached out we got the runaround and were told to speak with nurses who were not even his direct nurse...Be prepared to be suffled around to various doctors during your office visits and make sure you are ok with taking the lead in your own treatment as he does not do much follow up with his patients, you will usually talk to other doctors/nurses to get the information that you need.
The staff at the front desk [of North Shore] was always helpful and the nurses in the surgery room were so caring however; it was kind of like a factory feel at times because you were never sure what doctor you were seeing and at times they misplaced my paperwork which was a little unsettling...Jenny [nurse] was always willing to answer questions or provide information about my cycle however; there were some mistakes made in having me order medicine I never needed but on the other hand if I ran out of needed medication Jenny did try to help connect me to some extra meds if she had some available

During my first round with Dr Herslag he seemed really attentive and concerned about our process however; during the second round I feel he did not take an active interest in our case and after our second failed cycle he never even called to follow up or discuss next steps with us. When we reached out to follow up we got the runaround which made us want to consider starting treatment at another clinic

At first we tried 6 cycles of IUI which failed and then we did a frozen transfer cycle which also didn’t take. Dr. Herslag recommended me for uterine surgery to open up a blocked tube and then did another transfer which was unsuccessful
