7.1
Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Ask questions and be prepared to hear the truth. He [Dr. Edmond Confino] told me that if I was unable to become pregnant in three months that there was a problem. I listened to everything he told me to do and felt comfortable with out three month plan of IUI with and without drugs. I got pregnant at 39 after the first IUI...As a single woman wanting to have a child, he was supportive and nonjudgmental. He explained his plan for my age of 39 and we agreed on a time schedule. I felt he was honest with me and that I was in great hands.

How was your experience with Edmond Confino at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Confino has been doing this a long time and is very well respected in his field. As a single woman wanting to have a child, he was supportive and nonjudgmental. He explained his plan for my age of 39 and we agreed on a time schedule. I felt he was honest with me and that I was in great hands.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edmond Confino at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edmond Confino at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
He was very caring and really wonderful. He was very blunt about my age and the likelihood of a pregnancy. I felt like I was in great hands from the start.
Describe the protocols Edmond Confino used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
It was 16 years ago but I do remember a little bit. As I was only allowed to purchase four vials of donor sperm from the donor I selected, I wanted to follow all the rules. The plan was to do one insemination with without drugs, one month with clomid and then two the last month with clomid or another drug. I went in for an ultrasound on day ?, had an injection of profasi and came back a day or two later for the IUI. I went on to have a perfect pregnancy and healthy baby
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
I just remember all the nurses being very nice.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
I am a big fan of Northwestern and think the clinic was well run and would recommend them.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edmond Confino at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
It was in 2000 but my GUESS is that the consults, ultrasound and IUI were around $4500

Dr Kim was nice but felt she didn’t take the time to get to know us on a personal level. ... Dr Kim knows seems to know her stuff. ... She powered through results, never stopping to ask what we thought or felt comfortable with. She pushed IVF and wanted to get treatment started right after the consultation. It felt somewhat pushy and sales-like during a really hard time ... She did not show compassion and getting to know us as a couple and what treatment plans we felt comfortable with ... Dr Kim came in and powered through the consultation. It felt very scientific, blunt, and impersonal ...
Nice clinic [Northwestern Medicine] but will continue to research others in the area. Seemed more like a business where they pushed IVF heavily. Initial consultation appointment was very expensive. We decided not to go back as it didn’t feel like the right fit ... [nursing staff] Nice and compassionate ... Very expensive. We were shocked by the consultation fee when we have excellent insurance

I had to go through two Ivf cycles [with Dr. Feinberg], both unsuccessful ( because of mine and my husband's complicated fertility issues). I don't know if she did her best. Most of the times, our only way of communication was through an app. Maybe if I have had to see her more often, I would've been more confident. Anyway, she treated me with compassion. She is a good doctor, knowing what she has to do. And I would recommend her to my friends.
NW is probably the biggest hospital/ clinic in Chicago area, and all the staff is high level. Every time I've been there during the last year, I received good and warm experience. The staff was always nice, and all the procedures I've undergone were delicate and less stressful...I had to go through two Ivf cycles [with Dr. Feinberg], both unsuccessful ( because of mine and my husband's complicated fertility issues). He [Dr. Ralph Kazer] cares but doesn't sugar coat anything which I like...He is blunt and truthful. He is also caring and compassionate. He lets you know factually how likely pregnancy is and doesn't give any false hopes. I am happy he was my doctor. He was extremely helpful...I had to do injections anf daily blood draws then use progesterone to keep levels high

Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and competent, but sometimes it didn't feel like she listened to why we were pursuing these specific fertility services. She seems less versed in LGBTQ+ care and somewhat unwilling to understand the ways in which gender identity may influence a person's decision to be pregnant or not...We are doing reciprocal IVF, meaning my spouse was going to have her eggs retrieved to freeze embryos that would then be transferred to me
Northwestern is a high-volume practice, so be prepared to keep track of what should be happening and when—you are ultimately responsible for your care. It's very much like an assembly line, and despite bragging about their LGBTQ+ bona fides, the forms are heteronormative and no effort has been made to make them more inclusive.
How was your experience with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and competent, but sometimes it didn't feel like she listened to why we were pursuing these specific fertility services. She seems less versed in LGBTQ+ care and somewhat unwilling to understand the ways in which gender identity may influence a person's decision to be pregnant or not.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
If it's important to you, be confident in how you'd like to approach things. Dr. Kim won't lead you astray, but you may need to advocate for yourself a bit.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and has excellent credentials. However, at times it felt like she was unwilling to acknowledge our specific situation. We are doing reciprocal IVF, meaning my spouse was going to have her eggs retrieved to freeze embryos that would then be transferred to me. My spouse has low ovarian reserve, and several times Dr. Kim suggested that my spouse simply get pregnant because the likelihood of my spouse being able to get and stay pregnant was likely better than the likelihood of retrieving enough eggs for fertilization. My spouse has no interest in being pregnant. If it had come up only once, I don't think I would have been as bothered by it, but it came up several times. The practice itself is a high volume practice, and there were several occasions where labs or diagnostics weren't ordered accurately or at all, leading to delays in care.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.

Describe Helen Kim's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
No strong preference, but it ended up not being relevant to us because we had only one embryo to freeze.
What specific things went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to order appropriate test
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
They failed to order appropriate tests and call in the medication at one point. It didn't impact the outcome, but it added to an already stressful situation and degraded our faith in the medical team.

How was your experience with Christina E. Boots at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
My husband and I were advised to complete genetic testing of our embryos and paid for the service. Genetic testing never occurred. After the fact, Dr. Boots indicated my embryos were too fragile; however, this was never told to myself or my husband until the mistake was made. Since it did not occur, we were required to re-open an emotional wound and try for the embryo transfer which ultimately was unsuccessful.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Christina E. Boots at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Make sure she writes everything down for you and you have a copy. Do not trust her word.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Make sure everything is written down and you have a copy. They do not stick to their word. As mentioned, we were advised and paid for our embryos to be tested and this did not occur. All would have been avoided if protocol had been followed. Nowhere in my records does indicate my embryos were not to be genetically tested, Northwestern chose to blame it on COVID and being behind on reimbursing me on payments made. I did not receive payment until I found out my embryos were not genetically tested and seeked reimbursement. If you try a different fertility, you will immediately see where NW falls short. Save your stress and visit a clinic which cares about its patients.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Cattle call, had to get there super early, wait in line. COVID hit and they started scheduling appointments which made it easier. Would not be allowed to get lab work at the clinic if I was getting blood draw only which was ridiculous.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Christina E. Boots at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
IVF - $10K out of pocket plus drugs, FET - $5K out of pocket plus drugs, bloodwork and monitoring. Genetic testing was between $2-3K which never happened. Billing there is a nightmare.
What specific things went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
My embryos were suppose to be genetically tested and they were not. My husband and I had to go through the process of a FET because of this error. The emotional toll and additional financial burden was not a concern to Northwestern.

Be very up front with what you want to be considered [with Dr. Jared Robins]. If you want full hormone panels regularly you will need to ask up front. If you want to look into complimentary efforts such as diet, acupuncture, supplements you'll need to enlist a separate provider for that...he is very warm, knowledgeable and personable. Over the 8 months of treatment I haven only met with Dr. Robins initially, and then again to proceed with IUI about 4 months in...Progesterone suppositories were advised right away, though no underlying need had been identified. Clomid was then prescribed but not much in the way of a heads up on how it would impact my cycle. The team that prepped in the week leading up to the IUI were extremely helpful. I did an IUI cycle without Clomid, just the trigger shot, as I'm wary of further messing with my cycle.

How was your experience with Jared Robins at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
I'm not sure whether portal care is the norm for infertility treatment. If it is not, then I would recommend another practice. Northwestern boasts strong result rates but the practice is so full that there isn't much individualized care.

The two visits I have had with Dr. Robins he is very warm, knowledgeable and personable. Over the 8 months of treatment I haven only met with Dr. Robins initially, and then again to proceed with IUI about 4 months in. The nursing team at Northwestern Fertility Specialists are helpful and personable but nearly all exchanges are through the online portal. The practice is extremely busy and full so there aren't many opportunities for in person visits, though great when they do happen, the majority of care and interaction happens through the patient portal.

The practice is a well oiled machine. They get so many women in and out in a very efficient amount of time. The practice is well staffed, lots of rooms, always sure to process women in the early mornings very quickly for blood and ultrasounds - regularly in under 30 minutes.

She [Dr. Eve Feinberg] is wonderful and warm - she remembered us personally, our journey, and always kept our specific goals as the focus...We loved her. She is extremely skilled and communicates well. I got OHSS, and she was calm and handled it in a way that kept me from panicking. We had a wonderful experience, even though IVF was hard, and she was always available for a visit or call when I needed...Ask questions when you have them - she’ll answer them!...always felt warmly welcomed. Plus, they really run on time!...with one exception: Melissa, a nurse practitioner who often spoke before thinking or being fully aware of a situation, which led to more than one stressful situation)
Claire [nurse at Northwestern Medicine] was so wonderful, reassuring, and enthusiastic. The entire nursing staff was fantastic (with one exception: Melissa, a nurse practitioner who often spoke before thinking or being fully aware of a situation, which led to more than one stressful situation)...Melissa often didn’t seem to know what was going on and provided bad information that conflicted with what others said or conflicted with my chart relating to embryo freezing process, medications, and post-retrieval care...Organized, quiet, clean, friendly desk staff, easy scheduling, not a crazy waiting room, easy parking. The only downside of being treated in the suburbs is having to go into the city for weekend monitoring, which is a very different experience, and for retrievals themselves. But we lived our clinic and always felt warmly welcomed. Plus, they really run on time!

Although Dr Pavone is not warm and fuzzy but she's extremely smart, knowledgeable and highly skilled at what she does. Her understanding and knowledge is not just limited to her field of Reproductive Endocrinology but in fact she has very strong general medical knowledge as well. Northwestern's success rate is not as high as some other clinics and one of the reasons is that they see more complex patients who have already been at other clinics in the Chicago area. Overall, they have a great team there, a well oiled machine.

[Dr. Mary Ellen Pavone] strength is asking all the right questions for symptoms and life progression in fertility. Her strength is asking all the right questions for symptoms and life progression in fertility. Her weakness was not communicating after a tragic miscarriage which made me so sad. He [Dr. Jain] conducted a thorough examination and provided clear instructions and recommendations for our game plan. We only met him once at our initial consultation back in January but he came highly recommend by my gynecologist. ... Since we had already been trying to conceive for a year, had 5 months of clomid and one failed IUI without a positive pregnancy test he laid out a game plan to switch to letrozole for three months before discussing IVF.
This clinic [Northwestern Medicine] operates as a well oiled machine. It’s startling to see so many women at the office on the same journey they they all seem well taken care of. They have flexible house for monitoring appointments for blood draws and ultrasounds. Makes it easy to fit appointments into my schedule. I also love that they primarily communicate through MyChart app. No missed phone calls and it’s easy to review their written instructions and be reminded of appointments.

Dr. Jain gave good explanations and helped me decide to do the egg retrieval. I honestly didn't interact with him much but when I did it was good. I don't have much else to say - he wasn't a big part of my experience with the egg retrieval...every time I interacted with him he treated me with respect and care. My critique of the experience is that I had very little interaction with people who could give me a sense of how the cycles were going - the clinic staff was unbelievably efficient, but the only people I spoke to were receptionists, phlebotomists, and ultrasonographers...
The nurses [at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] were incredibly organized. My critique is that I had very few qualitative descriptions of how things were going. Once I got a message that said "it's still early in your cycle so we expect more follicles in the coming days." Otherwise it was always a form message - a very clear and useful form message - but nothing personalized...ask the nurses for more input if you want to know what's going on...

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
During the consultation I had a very good conversation with Dr. Jain. Overall every time I interacted with him he treated me with respect and care. My critique of the experience is that I had very little interaction with people who could give me a sense of how the cycles were going - the clinic staff was unbelievably efficient, but the only people I spoke to were receptionists, phlebotomists, and ultrasonographers - no one who could tell me "things are going well - I'd guess you have 5 more days" or "things are going pretty slowly - I think you might not get a good yield this round and I suspect you'll have to do another one" which is what happened. That's fine, but I was disappointed after my first round and I wish I'd had more of a sense earlier on that it wasn't going well.

Unbelievably efficient, quick, and professional. As I've described, lacking in personalized communication/letting patients know how they're doing. Dr. Jain was absolutely incredible. I referred him to my sister and had zero hesitations with that. I felt like I received individualized care based on my testing and results of ultrasounds/blood work...Never did I feel like a number. During our telethealth calls it was just as if it was me and them and nothing else mattered. It was wonderful...Be vulnerable and honest and come with prepared questions and hesitations.
I visited both the [Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] Oakbrook office and the Chicago office. The Chicago office is significantly busier because they do IUIs and embryo transfers there not just ultrasounds and bloodwork like they do at the Oakbrook office. Both clinics have nice staff. The front desk workers were a wee bit friendlier at the Oakbrook office but I believe its because its the same people that have been there for a long time and its a significantly smaller office. Chicago has more traffic.

This was my second IVF cycle. The first IVF cycle resulted in a pregnancy at the first embryo transfer and we were so excited that IVF was effective and worked! I unfortunately miscarried but that can happen even with a natural pregnancy. The second IVF cycle involved a series of shots with Follistim (dosages are adjusted based on blood work and how effectively the levels are increasing and how many follicles are growing and being produced), ganirelix, and oral meds letrozole, and then a trigger shot with leuprolide right before retrieval. My body responded very well to all medications and shots. My hormone levels increased appropriately and follicles were growing and produced properly. My first IVF cycle I produced 23 eggs and the second cycle I produced 17 eggs.

All excellent. Most remembered my name and were very kind.

My first 3 IUIs totalled about 3K; first round of IVF about 22K but that included about 5K of genetic testing. 2nd round of IVF is currently under 10K, i believe that's because I've hit some deductible maximums with insurance, not sure though.

I only transferred one embryo at a time.

Although my journey was complicated, Dr Jain never gave up on me. After each appointment, we would change the treatment protocol and explore additional testing if needed...He monitored me closely to make sure I didn’t develop OHSS. We ended up with 29 eggs and 13 embryos from that one cycle! FET - due to my risk of OHSS, all of my transfers were frozen...Always starts with one tested/untested embryo. If first transfer fails, will consider 2 untested embryos if patient understands the risks. If embryos are tested, then single embryo transfers only.
The clinic [Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] is honestly top notch. They have all the latest technology and the doctors stay up to date with all the latest data. Monitoring appointments can be done at the Oak Brook and Highland Park locations, but all procedures are done downtown. The nurse practitioners have appointments in the suburbs, but the physicians typically stay downtown....
How was your experience with Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Jain invests deeply in the care of his patients. Although my journey was complicated, Dr Jain never gave up on me. After each appointment, we would change the treatment protocol and explore additional testing if needed. I did a lot of research myself and felt very comfortable asking him questions to share my wants and needs. Dr Jain had no problem adjusting the treatment plan to what I felt most comfortable with. During each appointment, I never felt rushed. He would also send MyChart messages very late at night as he is catching up on his charting. It showed that I was not just a number to him, and that he genuinely cared about me as his patient.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Come prepared to ask questions! If you’re up for it (or in the healthcare field), do your own research and ask Dr Jain what he thinks about certain tests, labs, or procedures. Knowledge is power, so take your time during the appointment to make sure all questions are answered.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Jain always spent SO much time with me explaining the treatment plan and altering the treatment plan to fit my wants and needs too
Describe the protocols Tarun Jain used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
IUI - letrozole alone, and letrozole with clomid. Unfortunately all were unsuccessful. IVF - low doses of GonalF and Menopur since I made a lot of eggs. He monitored me closely to make sure I didn’t develop OHSS. We ended up with 29 eggs and 13 embryos from that one cycle! FET - due to my risk of OHSS, all of my transfers were frozen. First transfer was a medicated transfer with estradiol and IM progesterone - which failed. I ended up fainting with the IM progesterone once, so we avoided it for the next transfers. Second transfer was a modified natural cycle with letrozole and Ovidrel - but unfortunately ended in an ectopic. Third transfer was another modified natural cycle and currently pregnant! (We did genetic testing of embryos and ERA test prior to the third transfer)
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Kait)
Kait is an absolute Angel! She was my biggest support system through my entire journey. She always replied to my concerns and got me answers to my questions. She would personally call me to explain in greater detail after test results. She is the BEST nurse.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
My insurance thankfully covered IVF, so I just had to pay my out of pocket max for the year which was $3500. I never had any issues with the billing department. Embryo testing was not covered, so that was an additional $5000. Also, the ERA and ReceptivaDx testing is not covered by any insurance, so that was an extra $1500 out of pocket. In total: $10,000

The very first time I met him [Dr. Jain]...He was confident that I would not need IVF and with 4 IUI (3 being negative and 1 being a chemical pregnancy). After our 2nd telemed meeting we are now doing IVF...He does take the time to listen to you...he basically told me to go on a Plant based diet, lose weight, cut sugar out, and stop eating meat because its bad food....
I just felt everytime I walked into the office [at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] I was just another $ instead of a person...Strengths: Fast and sufficient. Answer your questions in a timely manner. Multiple sites your able to go to. Weakness: Only downtown location is open on the weekends, appointments are far out so you have to take what you can get, if you normally go to a specific site be aware if its booked you have to go to another site, getting your period on the weekend is the worst because monday is there busiest days.
How was your experience with Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
I've only met Dr. Jain twice never in person only telemed because of Covid. The very first time I met him to my partner and I he seemed cocky he basically told me to go on a Plant based diet, lose weight, cut sugar out, and stop eating meat because its bad food. He was confident that I would not need IVF and with 4 IUI (3 being negative and 1 being a chemical pregnancy). After our 2nd telemed meeting we are now doing IVF. Which is not only time consuming but is very expensive. I will say I cut dairy out of my diet and did lose 28 pounds. Never had natural periods until I lost all that weight the last 5 months my periods have been coming by themselfs and timid. He does take the time to listen to you and it is very overstimulating the amount of information that is received and what your body really goes through! You are mentally and physically drained.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Be prepared- this experience is very long and becomes overwhelming for you and your partner. It consumes your life from the blood draws, semen samples, ultrasounds, and appointments. You pretty much work around their availability and I've personally have missed a lot of work just to attend these appointments. *Do your researches make notes and DO NOT be afraid to ask Questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
I just felt everytime I walked into the office I was just another $ instead of a person. My first time doing an IUI/ ultrasound nobody explained to me I needed to undress and I stayed in the room unsure what to do and nervous. Finally, when the tech came in she was unhappy that I was not on the table ready to go. I had a chemical pregnancy and I just feel like my world just shattered they didn't offer services/ therapy anything to get me through my worst nightmare just an apology.
Describe the protocols Tarun Jain used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
My partner and I decided to do 2 timid intercourses and 2 IUI. But, the protocols were similar. Timid intercourse: Notify the clinic of day 1 of period. Day 3 of period schedule you for bloodwork and ultrasound. Based on your bloodwork and ultrasound they send you a message letting you know to start taking Letrozole 5mg once a day for 5 days. Return for bloodwork and ultrasound and based on your results the nursing staff will tell you when to give the trigger shot usually 24 hrs last between 9pm-10pm. The nursing staff gave specific instructions for the timid intercourse usually the next three days. Wait 2 weeks and take a pregnancy test. The IUI:Notify the clinic of day 1 of period. The nursing staff reaches out to scheduling to set you a time for your partner and yourself to go in the IUI procedure (Usually 2-3 days after trigger shot).
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Strengths: For the most they were in great communication with me letting me know the next steps if I had any questions they were quick to respond. Weakness: I do not like how many people have access to my information I felt like I was getting different answerings which made it confusing.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Strengths: Fast and sufficient.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Make sure you try to have the best deductible because the cost quickly add up. The trigger shot is through Northwestern Speciality Pharmacy and you have to special order that shot and it was $20.00. The ultrasounds and bloodwork after I met my deductible were free essentially but prior the blood work was roughly $10-$30 and ultrasound was $30-$50
Describe Tarun Jain's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
No comments this process was explained thoroughly to me and I understood why he is transferring one embryo instead of multiples.
