Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Shahine was kind and warm, she spoke very gently and smiled a lot, she made me not so nervous during every time. But actually my family and I, we didn't think that she cared about us, during the 2 cycle, I didn't get any phone calls from her, and she didn't give us the exact reason that why with normal results (as her assistance words, "perfect results")EVERYTIME blood test, we just 1 normal blast of the 5 day, I had 31 eggs retrieval. She didn't care, and the same with her team.
They [nurses at Pacific NW Fertility] were polite and kind, but mistakes were made...They didn't response my email in time, even when I was bleeding after transfer and I was doubting about chemical pregnancy, they told me that bleeding was normal, and told me to contact them when I saw tissue came out. I wrote to them about seeing the tissue, and they didn't answer my email anymore. Maybe I interrupted them. Finally I had a chemical pregnancy, they called me to tell me to schedule a new cycle!!!!
How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
She was kind, but she didn't care from deep, maybe it's just for us. she told us she didn't know the reason, why blood test were all good, we just failed our 2 cycle. First cycle, 14 eggs retrieval,6 matured, with ICSI with 6 fertilized. 1 normal. she said maybe it was a little bit late for the last trigger. Ok, next cycle, 17 eggs retrieval, 9 matured, with ICSI, 4 were fertilized! 50% failed, and none of them were normal. why ?? she didn't know! just told us unfortunately. excuse me, are you kidding me???
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Maybe she and her team will take care of you if you were native or not asian people.

Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
2 cycles. 1: 14eggs, 6 matured, 2 for the 5 day, 1 normal. ----transfer, chemical pregnancy, her assistant said that bleeding was normal, and didn't response my email. 2: 17 eggs, 9 matured, 1 for the 5 day. None. We didn't see any report for the updates of embryos or blasts, just their phone call, we didn't know what was going on for the 3 days, or 5 days. Nothing, Nothing was reported.

Go for another doctor who cares about you and your treatment, and who would do the egg retrieval by herself to you. The clinic was good, I was done a polyp operation there, the nurse took good care of me.

She [Dr. Lora Shahine] seems like a cheerleader initially when you see her online persona and in our first meeting with her. But in reality she was rough with us in some conversations and she knew we had just suffered a horrible tragedy. If we were anxious it was because of our circumstance, and I would hope a doctor would understand a patient’s anxiety in a tragedy and during a pandemic. She showed no such understanding.
[Pacific NW Fertility - Seattle is] Very clean and organized clinic overall. The nurses answered a lot of questions and were very patient and thorough. They were communicative about steps and updates and I always felt in the know with the nursing staff. I did encounter some doctors there that did seem nice. Just not Dr. Shahine. Some of the other doctors seemed great.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
The IVF advocate influencer personality she shows online is not what you’ll be getting.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
We went to Dr. Shahine on the recommendations of my OB-GYN and MFM after we endured a tragic pregnancy. She has a presence on social media where she positions herself as a positive influencer and compassionate advocate for IVF patients, but the reality is she was quite rough with us after we went to her seeking help when a pregnancy ended tragically. The online persona and platform she tries to craft is not the experience we had with her. It was the beginning of the pandemic and we were both very anxious and worried and had a lot of questions and concerns about IVF timing, given my age and our difficult circumstances. At one point during one of our calls when I asked some questions, she stopped me to say I had to show her and her nurses more respect. She kept talking about this and we sat there quietly on the line until I said OK please don’t belabor this point, I heard you. For someone who should have experience dealing with anxious people facing difficult situations, she showed us no compassion.
Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
She used birth control to get ahold of my cycle to begin. This resulted in fewer eggs than subsequent cycles with a different doctor. With Dr. Shahine’s cycle we only got 12 eggs and 1 mosaic at the end. My subsequent doctor was able to get 18-21 eggs with several cycles and some normal embryos. Dr. Shahine also told me I had diminished ovarian reserve with extremely low AMH. Subsequent cycles with another doctor showed normal range AMH and no indication of DRI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific NW Fertility.
The nursing staff was very kind, and the other doctors I saw at the clinic for monitoring scans were nice too.

Overall, it felt like like this doctor [Dr. Broughton] did not care about me as a person. ... This doctor did not treat calls - such as my call reporting my miscarriage - with a sense of urgency. ... She didn’t feel present with regards to my treatment, she didn’t return my calls in a timely manner, my treatment plan was the same month after month. When I wanted to find out a timeline to resume treatment post miscarriage, I only seemed to get calls back re things that could be sold to me.
Communication is the greatest weakness of this clinic [Pacific NW Fertility]. They clinic also charges a premium price for a decidedly not premium patient experience. The doctor came up with one plan and that was the only plan. No revaluing each month, no connecting with me on the plan. Just this is what we are doing. ... The clinic did not send my medical records to my new clinic as requested. When they send them to me, they included inaccurate information re conversations that we had. I kept getting new bills many months after I had moved on to a new clinic. Not certain why their billing is not more streamlined.

You will need to advocate strongly for yourself if you don’t feel confident in your treatment plan; I didn’t feel like she was engaged with mine, personally. Set expectations re communication- her perception of an appropriate response time might not align with yours (it certainly did not with mine)
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Darcy Broughton at Pacific NW Fertility?
This doctor did not treat calls - such as my call reporting my miscarriage - with a sense of urgency. Doctors that I had never called called me about my miscarriage prior to Dr. Broughton - literally the only doctor I called.

Dr. Shahine considered all my previous testing and medical files from my previous RE and fully reviewed everything before we came in for our consult. I felt that she really took her time to familiarize herself with our case and that means a lot. She had so much compassion and approached our current situation with kindness.... She suggested we change the dosage on some meds due to those complications. This clinic also times the IUIs differently than my last clinic to be anytime on the day after trigger shot instead of a set 36hrs after trigger like my previous clinic's IUIs.
PNWF is a much larger clinic than my previous clinic. There are many doctors on staff here and most of your appointments are handled by the nurses. As a new patient, you'll most likely not meet with your doctor right away. You meet with a nurse first and do any testing required first. (i.e.: RPL bloodwork) Then you will see Dr. Shahine to review those results at a later time. So it may take you several weeks to get in for the first appointment with the nurse and then several more weeks after that to actually meet with your Dr.
How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine is a very active person in the field of fertility medicine. She is very active on her social media Instagram to help raise awareness for infertility including available grants and support groups. She is also a specialist for recurrent pregnancy loss and an author. The reason why I seeked her out for a second opinion on my recurrent pregnancy loss was to gain some new insights on why I've miscarried two babies already in the last two and a half years. So far, I'm not sure I've learned anything new, that I haven't heard from my previous RE. To be honest, I did not expect her to have the magic pill that would fix RPL, but maybe we'll learn more as our treatment at this new clinic moves forward.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine is good about making sure you have your questions answered. She is also reassuring and encouraging. I say this about any Dr or situation, to be your own advocate and bring those hard questions to them.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Michelle Peterson)
Communication at this clinic is mainly with your nurse coordinator or the front office relaying your phone calls and scheduling your next appointments. No portal message system but you can email your coordinator directly. So far they do call back within reasonable time. It does seem as though, when your taking to a nurse who is not your set coordinator, there is some mix ups and misunderstandings.

Communicating with a nurse who is not your own nurse coordinator may inform you with conflicting information regarding your treatment. Which is what happened when I asked about getting a specific prescription filled by a certain time, and was told I wouldn't be taking it on a day that I actually was scheduled to start taking it.

How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Marshall was very calm and considerate whenever we met with her. She is very knowledgable and was patient with us even when we were frustrated that multiple IUI attempts had not worked. I have also heard great things about her from other patients that we have met during our journey. My two critiques are as follows: - Dr. Marshall (and PNW Fertility) was less than willing to stray from the normal playbook. Our case is atypical in that we were using donor sperm and we had no explanation why the IUIs hadn't worked to date. We asked about a laparoscopy to look for possible endometriosis, which she dismissed as too invasive and stated that she thought there was no reason to think my wife had that condition. We decided to move forward with the procedure anyway using my wife's OB-GYN, and they did indeed find endometriosis, which may have been an issue with the prior IUI attempts - At our last insemination, the RN asked if we had been taking in additional medication recommended by Dr. Marshall. These recommendations were in our file, but she had not actually told us anything about it.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Marshall is knowledgable and considerate, but as with everything in the infertility process, it is important to be your own advocate and make sure you communicate with her if you feel you need more testing or are seeking a different approach.

Multiple IUIs attempted with Dr. Marshall and RNs at PNWF. None were successful. After 5 attempts Dr. Marshall recommended proceeding directly to IVF.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Jennifer Schilling)
Jennifer was very congenial and responsive to e-mails and calls. As with Dr. Marshall, we thought she was not comfortable straying from the normal procedures for IUIs.

PNWF seems to be pretty good at middle of the road infertility cases and provide a good level of quality to the standard procedures. However, they seem less willing to explore each individual's unique challenges and get to the root of unexplained infertility. My biggest pet peeve with PNWF was that the first experience you have once entering their office is walking up to the front desk and being asked to pay up front. It just made everything seem very transactional. It seems like there could be a better way that's more considerate of the emotional state that most people are in when they arrive.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility.
IUI costs included the insemintation, as well as defrosting and testing of donor sperm. We were repeatedly charged for sperm analysis that as not done (since it was a donor). We have begun exploring IVF costs, and while they seem comparable to other clinics in the area, it is... excessive.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility.
Not all preliminary testing was done up front, and discussing the results was challenging. Bloodwork results were often communicated by a phone call saying "everything looks fine." My wife would have to call repeatedly to have someone walk her through the numbers and explain what they meant.

[Dr. Lorna Marshall] failed to inform us what blood tests she was ordering (when we were paying out of pocket and concerned about costs) and some of the blood tests had already been conducted...was pleasant enough to work with, but seemed unskilled at acknowledging the emotions of seeking out fertility treatment for the first time...She was less than helpful in giving advice on next steps and directed us away from further examination of my partner's varicocele and potential varicocelectomy. She was helpful in not recommending IUIs with injectables to avoid possible multiples.
There were many nurses and nurse practitioners whom we worked with at Pacific NW Fertility. I never felt like they actually knew me nor did I get to know them. It felt like it was a new person each time we went. They were professional, competent, optimistic, and compassionate. I did not have a bad experience with the nursing staff other than feeling like there was little to no opportunity to form much of a relationship/sense of familiarity.
How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Lorna Marshall was technical and rather emotionally cold. She was pleasant enough to work with, superficially compassionate, and not very warm. She had a strange story about her parents taking 9 years to conceive her which was unhelpful given my age and situation. She provided information on the procedures and answered the questions we had as best she could. She was less than helpful in giving advice on next steps and directed us away from further examination of my partner's varicocele and potential varicocelectomy. She was helpful in not recommending IUIs with injectables to avoid possible multiples.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Be prepared that Lorna Marshall likely won't be very warm and emotionally supportive through the process.

Dr. Lorna Marshall was pleasant enough to work with, but seemed unskilled at acknowledging the emotions of seeking out fertility treatment for the first time.
Describe the protocols Lorna Marshall used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
Lorna Marshall recommended IUIs with letrozole. She had us come in for ultrasounds in advance of the IUI in order to check follicle count in advance of each IUI. She had us use an HCG trigger shot prior to the IUI. Each time, I developed 1-2 follicles on letrozole, but only ever got negative pregnancy tests.

Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
The clinic was expensive and at times poor communicators. One person at the front desk gave us the wrong information about parking. The financial department was relatively difficult to work with and seemed unavailable/unhelpful at times. It was difficult to get itemized bills when we requested them. The location was a bit difficult to get to and parking was challenging and expensive. The lobby was pretty and well maintained with nice views.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility.
We paid for 2-3 consultations with Dr. Marshall, the cost of letrozole and HCG trigger shot medications, the cost of ultrasounds/IUI/sperm washing procedures, and parking.

Lorna Marshall failed to inform us what blood tests she was ordering (when we were paying out of pocket and concerned about costs) and some of the blood tests had already been conducted. The clinic refunded the lab costs, but it was difficult to get a refund and unnecessary if Dr. Marshall had simply informed us what tests she was planning to run when the blood draw was done.

Dr Lamb was friendly, but I think that she was overly optimistic in her diagnosis. Lots of unknowns along the fertility journey, but I think she could have been a bit more realistic....Research two or three clinics before making a decision and spend time briefly interviewing each doctor before deciding which clinic to use.
The nurse I was assigned to [at Pacific NW Fertility] , while very nice and compassionate, tended to be a bit rushed and scattered at times....In our initial consultation with the clinic, they advised I would qualify for the 'two cycle' plan....In March that we were told that I didn't qualify due to my FSH & AMH levels being too high. We were extremely disappointed that this wasn't communicated earlier in the process and made a point to challenge the decision and speak with the clinic manager. They listened to our complaint, but I'm not sure that anything was done to fix the gap in their process.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility?
Research two or three clinics before making a decision and spend time briefly interviewing each doctor before deciding which clinic to use.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Lamb was quite personable, as was her nursing staff. The nurse I was assigned to, while very nice and compassionate, tended to be a bit rushed and scattered at times.
Describe the protocols Julie Lamb used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
I was 37 and took 75iu Menopur & 300iu Follistim. I had 11 (or 12?) eggs retrieved, 6 mature, 3 decent embryos on day 3. All three were implanted on day 3, resulted in chemical pregnancy.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Catherine Cripe)
I remember it being somewhat chaotic - getting information or answers to me last minute or only after a few requests.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility.
Base price of $9,951.30 plus $400 for anesthesia, $2,000 for ICSI, $1,230 for embryo cryopreservation and $600 for blast culture for a total of $14,181.30. Plus medications.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility.
In our initial consultation with the clinic, they advised I would qualify for the 'two cycle' plan. We returned to the clinic in January after trying to conceive on our own to initiate an IVF cycle with the understanding we would be able to enroll in the two cycle plan. They re-drew my labs to check my levels (a qualifier for the plan) two months prior to the start of our IVF cycle. It wasn't until after we had committed to the process and ordered our meds in March that we were told that I didn't qualify due to my FSH & AMH levels being too high. We were extremely disappointed that this wasn't communicated earlier in the process and made a point to challenge the decision and speak with the clinic manager. They listened to our complaint, but I'm not sure that anything was done to fix the gap in their process. There was some communication through email with the nurse who said Dr. Lamb thought we would have good success and likely be able to freeze some embryos. We only had three decent day-3 embryos to implant.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Shahine clearly knows her stuff, and she’s wonderful to speak with about treatment options and everything that goes along with it. That said, as a patient, you primarily speak only with her nurses. She is not accessible to patients and, when dealing with infertility, that can be tough. Other than that, though, this doctor is optimistic, compassionate, intelligent, and definitely knows what she’s doing. Would definitely recommend overall.
The facility [Pacific NW Fertility] is nice, the doctors are smart and competent, the nurses are mostly responsive. It is the only fertility clinic I’ve ever been to, but I trust that they will do their best and provide me with the best possible outcome!... as a patient, you primarily speak only with her [Dr. Shahine's] nurses. Be prepared to ask ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS when you see her because it’s unlikely that you’ll get another chance!
Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
We tried one (failed) medicated IUI, although it turned out that even the trigger shot didn’t work. About to start our first IVF cycle!

All costs are out of pocket for us, so we’re about the hand over about $23k to the clinic plus $3k for meds.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility.
Just that my trigger shot failed for our IUI and that possibility was not discussed prior, monitored during, or discussed after the failed cycle.

During my second IUI attempt she [Dr Lora Shahine] flat out said she didn't know what to do with me and asked if I had considered egg donors. She had not done any testing on me to find out if this was something I should consider. Needless to say it scared me very much. I left the clinic, had testing done at another clinic, learned I had a thyroid imbalance which was easily corrected and got pregnant immediately after.
My doctor [at Pacific NW Fertility] went out on medical leave. Nobody called to let me know this. I left messages and emails and didn't finally get a response until two weeks later. Testing was never ordered, not even basic blood tests...I do not remember the cost. I do know it was cheaper than other clinics....I was assigned another doctor, but was transferred to Dr. Shahine when he was out. I felt like she was very rushed and could care less about my care.
How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine was not the doctor assigned to me. During my second IUI attempt she flat out said she didn't know what to do with me and asked if I had considered egg donors. I left the clinic, had testing done at another clinic, learned I had a thyroid imbalance which was easily corrected and got pregnant immediately after.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Be careful and get a second opinion. From what I have heard she treats her own patients a lot better.

femara + IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific NW Fertility.
The nurses seemed to thaw the sperm vials way too long before the actual procedure. They also wanted to do an IUI exactly 24 hours after trigger even though not every patient ovulates then.

I do not remember the cost. I do know it was cheaper than other clinics.

She [Dr. Marshall] is clear in explaining her process, but there is little room for a patient to work with her on your plan of care. She is also quite defensive when questions are asked, as if she is offended. Overall, I felt pretty disheartened by our meeting together. ... She has obviously been working in the field for a long time. Our consultation was clear and direct, but when I ask any clarifying questions she appeared defensive, like it wasn't my job to speak up and ask questions.
It [Pacific NW Fertility] is a top notch clinic, with great outcomes. It was always clean and professional. It was also extremely expensive. Sometimes it was hard to figure out the chain of communication and hard to get a direct line to anyone. ... Chelsea was amazing. She has a great way of explaining options and including a personal communication style with research. We stayed at the clinic for her services and were sad to leave her when we transferred care.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
If you want to just have someone take the wheel, this is your doctor. If you want to explore options with a doctor, she is probably not the best fit. However, her nurses are incredible and you won't see her much, so it could be a good fit for some folx.

We did a consultation for IVF and she managed our IUI inseminations using Letrozole. She planned our IVF cycle with only PGS testing embryos. The clinic does not do, as far as I can tell, any fresh transfers.

It was about $300 for an IVF consultation, however IVF for one retrieval was quoted at just over 30K, with no discounts for self-pay clients. They also looked flabbergasted when we asked for an LGBTQ grants.

For some reason only part of my medical record was sent to the new clinic when we changed providers.
