Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I've only met Dr Marshall twice, both times over Zoom, in the last two years. I do feel that they know what they're doing, but sometimes have concerns that they're using protocols that work for 'most people' rather than diving in to my personal details to create a plan that suits my body...[she] is kind, funny, calm, and reassuring. She clearly has a lot of experience and I trust that she knows what she's doing. Sometimes this can be a double edged sword, as she assumes I also know the details of a procedure/protocol, but she is always happy to answer questions
Strengths [of Pacific NW Fertility] - high ratings and success rates, multiple locations, all procedures and testing can be done in-house, knowledgeable team, more queer friendly than other local clinics in the Seattle area...Weaknesses- don't always answer the phone or get back to emails right away, price is higher than others, paperwork and procedures are from a heterosexual perspective and my partner has been misgendered multiple times
How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Marshall is kind, funny, calm, and reassuring. She clearly has a lot of experience and I trust that she knows what she's doing. Sometimes this can be a double edged sword, as she assumes I also know the details of a procedure/protocol, but she is always happy to answer questions. I appreciate her work towards trying to get insurance coverage for fertility treatment in the state of Washington!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself. Dr. Marshall said the same - we should feel comfortable calling and asking questions whenever we want.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Especially during a pandemic, it's hard to feel connected to the team of doctors handling my treatment. I've only met Dr Marshall twice, both times over Zoom, in the last two years. I do feel that they know what they're doing, but sometimes have concerns that they're using protocols that work for 'most people' rather than diving in to my personal details to create a plan that suits my body. I feel I have to do a lot of self-advocacy, asking about further testing or whether my levels are normal or not. They have a hands-off approach, which I understand, but when I'm paying this much money I'd prefer to know all the tiny details and get a tailored experience.
Describe the protocols Lorna Marshall used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
For IUI with PCOS - first 3 rounds were with Letrozole and trigger. Round 4 and 5 included additional Gonal-F.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific NW Fertility.
All very kind and helpful, though I've only met Dr Marshall's nursing team over the phone. The nurses I've worked with in person are all very friendly, calm, warm, and kept me at ease.
Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
Strengths - high ratings and success rates, multiple locations, all procedures and testing can be done in-house, knowledgeable team, more queer friendly than other local clinics in the Seattle area Weaknesses- don't always answer the phone or get back to emails right away, price is higher than others, paperwork and procedures are from a heterosexual perspective and my partner has been misgendered multiple times
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility.
IUI with ultrasounds, approximately 1,000-1,200 per cycle IVF - 23,500 + 3-6,000 meds, 1,000 testing, 4,000 PGT-A testing
Describe Lorna Marshall's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
The clinic strongly feels that one embryo per transfer is the way to go. At my age, I have no issue with that but would likely feel differently if trying to conceive later in life.
What specific things went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility?
  • Failed to call with results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility.
Billing and test issues on patient portal site. Fees on site inaccurate and needed to call to clarify. Test results were supposed to be posted multiple times and didn't show up until I called. Would also have loved a description/explanation of the test results

[Dr. Marshall] was compassionate and optimistic about results. She offered alternatives when they did not meet our expectations. She is very knowledgeable and does share everything she can. I do wish I saw her more frequently, she did not perform my IUIs...I often felt when I was meeting with other doctors that did not have the full context (although I am sure they did) and weekend appointments because of timing made it so I was seeing other people.
The [Pacific NW Fertility] clinic is very clean and organized. The clinic could improve scheduling by offering variety of times at the desired location. My husband had some test/billing mix ups which took some time to sort out. He also did tests at the facility for another doctor but they were never sent tot he doctor...The nursing staff was very responsive although they did not give a lot of answers. They always recommend connecting with the doctor, which just took a lot of time.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
I would recommend more time with patient, although I know this is hard given how many people seek treatments. We saw Dr. Marshall for a second opinion IVF appointment which I expected would be fairly perfunctory. I couldn't have been more wrong. Dr. Marshall had gone through our large stack of medical records (we had done 2 unsuccessful cycles at another clinic) and had detailed notes on exactly what she would recommend, and provided thoughtful answers to all our questions. She has been incredibly supportive and caring through this process (which is still underway) and you can tell she genuinely rooting for us...continues to do everything she can to support patients like me who are really challenging. She hasn't forced donors eggs on us and she's supportive of going forward with additional IVF cycles.
Brenna is a fantastic IVF coordinator [at Pacific NW Fertility]. She quickly responds to my emails and phone calls and provides detailed information...overall has been a great clinic. We did our ultrasounds/monitoring in Bellevue because it was more convenient and the procedures in Seattle. The quality of the staff is equal at both locations and we met with different doctors and nurses during the monitoring phase and everyone was wonderful. I especially appreciate the egg retrieval set up because each PNWF patient gets a private room so you can relax before the procedure. At our previous clinic, all patients waited in an emergency-room style set up with sheets separating the bays. You would hear the outcomes of previous retrievals while you waited for your own which was a weird experience.
How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Before meeting with Dr. Marshall, we had two very disappointing IVF cycles at a previous clinic. I'm 36 years-old with diminished ovarian reserves and in the previous two cycles I had retrieve 4 eggs (1 fertilized) and 2 eggs (0 fertilized). I felt like a total failure after the 2nd IVF cycle so I decided to reach out for a second opinion and selected Dr. Marshall based on some of the Fertility IQ reviews about diminished ovarian reserve. We met with Dr. Marshall and it was night and day from our previous clinic. In our one-hour consultation she arrived with detailed notes on our medical history and jumped right in with new protocol recommendation. I mentioned to her that my previous clinic never technically categorized me as diminished ovarian reserve. Her response, "Really? Of course, you have diminished ovarian reserves and there are very successful treatment protocols that we've developed. We just need to adjust your treatment plan." This interaction made me feel so good just to know that there was a path forward. Dr. Marshall answered all our questions thoughtfully and backed up her suggestions with clinical research findings. My husband and I knew after that first meeting that we had to switch to Dr. Marshall and we were grateful that she would consider taking our case given the challenge and likelihood that it might lower the clinic's success statistics. Fast forward to our first IVF cycle with Dr. Marshall, she had me on an estrogen lead in protocol to suppress the lead follicles. I also Clomid for five days, immediately began to stimulate with 450IU Gonal F and mini-HCG after my day 3 suppression check. We went from retrieving 3 eggs in my last cycle, to getting 10 eggs! Of the 10 eggs, 4 fertilized and 2 grew to a blastocyst which is the farthest we had gotten. Unfortunately, both blastocysts were abnormal but upon reflection I'm so grateful to have used PGT-A to avoid wasting time and money on blastocyst that would not result in a viable egg. Overall, we're still a challenging case and I can't say we have a happy ending yet. However, Dr. Marshall has and continues to do everything she can to support patients like me who are really challenging. She hasn't forced donors eggs on us and she's supportive of going forward with additional IVF cycles.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
If you have questions always ask Dr. Marshall, she really wants to make sure patients have all the information they need to understand the options.

She [Dr. Shahine] was very kind and helpful, from initial meeting she was looking out for our best interests and fully explained the process we were about to embark on. Her team always got back to me promptly and created safe plan of actions with her...Nurses on site perform the actual IUI and her staff consults her after blood word and relays into to me....
They [Pacific NW Fertility] are organized, on time, helpful, communicative & supportive...Each appointment, procedure and test has a cost. For IUI, each ultrasound was $190 (usually 3 per cycle so $570) + blood work. Medication like letrezole was covered by insurance but HCG shots were $150 each month. Each IUI was $282 so each month it was ~ $1,050. Now as we prepare for IVF, there is blood work required, medications and we dont have the individual cost but were told its starts at $25k and to estimate more for things like genetic testing.
How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
She was very kind and helpful, from initial meeting she was looking out for our best interests and fully explained the process we were about to embark on. Her team always got back to me promptly and created safe plan of actions with her. I would recommend Dr Shahine to friends/ family.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Ask questions! Have a list of questions for your first appointment and don’t be afraid to follow up.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
We met with her once in person and once over video conference (due to corona virus) and she is very friendly, thoughtful & helpful. Nurses on site perform the actual IUI and her staff consults her after blood word and relays into to me.
Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
I initially did bloodwork and the HSG grate and then started with medicated cycles and IUI. I took letrezole in the beginning plus the HCG trigger shot before ovulation. after a few months and one anovulation cycle later we doubled the dose. The last month I did IUI, I was on letrezole beginning of my cycle, took the HCG trigger shot and also started progesterone after ovulation. I got a positive pregnancy test and then with blood work a few times after, my levels were declining. We did multiple blood draws over the next month to track this pregnancy to 0 HCG. This was the last IUI before IVF. Now with the clinics closed due to coronavirus, we wait 😌

Describe Lora Shahine's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
It’s very situational but from what i have learned a he believes in single embryo transfer for healthy women under 35. It’s situational but i have a few other friends who have seen her and she also recommended single embryo transfer. Doesn’t want to risk multiple embryos if you only have a few good ones.

Dr. Shahine has always made us feel cared for and that she is personally invested in our care...She has provided additional resources to work alongside our treatments...[she] used several different protocols throughout our cycles. We have used injections, pills, suppositories and patches. With each cycle, dosages have been adjusted or type of delivery has been changed to increase effectiveness
[nurse of Pacific NW Fertility] They are great at returning calls and gathering information needed...They answer the phones well and send back the information as needed. At times it is hard to get appointments that work around a typical work schedule...The total cost was approximately $33,000 for one full IVF cycle, including egg retrieval, one embryo transfer, medications, blood work, monitoring appointments.
How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine has always made us feel cared for and that she is personally invested in our care. When we were not successful after our first transfer, she mourned our loss with us. She has provided additional resources to work alongside our treatments. She has met with us in person multiple times to make sure that we were comfortable with the plan moving forward and that our mental health was well taken care of as well. She has made sure that we feel heard and that our opinions are validated.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Be honest and ask all the questions you have. She is happy to answer questions and values your thoughts and opinions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine and her team are always open to answer questions and give additional explanations. Throughout our cycles, Dr. Shahine has personally met with us and we have had multiple appointments with her to ensure clarity. We felt that she has celebrated our successes with us and mourned our losses together.
Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
Dr. Shahine used several different protocols throughout our cycles. We have used injections, pills, suppositories and patches. With each cycle, dosages have been adjusted or type of delivery has been changed to increase effectiveness. For example, the estrogen patches did not produce the levels that we wanted so for the next cycles, we were switched to injections. They were much more effective and yielded better results than the patches.

They are great at communication. When they tell you they will call with results in the afternoon, they always do. They are great at returning calls and gathering information needed. They show the same great compassion as Dr. Shahine does. They are open to listening to concerns and explaining information a second time.
Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
The clinic staff is very friendly and the clinic is welcoming. They answer the phones well and send back the information as needed. At times it is hard to get appointments that work around a typical work schedule. Everyone is very helpful and the atmosphere is very positive.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility.
The total cost was approximately $33,000 for one full IVF cycle, including egg retrieval, one embryo transfer, medications, blood work, monitoring appointments.
Describe Lora Shahine's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
We only wanted to transfer one single embryo at one time, which Dr. Shahine agreed with was the best approach.

She [Dr. Marshall] had more thoroughly reviewed our file and had a more in depth conversation with us about our situation than our medical team at our previous clinic...we have seen Dr. Marshall throughout the entire cycle...suggested a completely different protocol and the results were dramatically different compared to our previous 2 cycles (round 1: 4 embryos - all abnormal, round 2: 2 embryos - all abnormal, moved to Dr. Marshall, round 3: 11 embryos, 2 normal). (I have a genetic condition that results in a small % of normal embryos) Beyond the outcome, the experience felt different - from her proactive communication, to her kind and thorough bedside manner, to the fact that even though she didn't do the retrieval surgery, she popped in right after to check on us - it felt like she was on our side and we were on the s
Brenna and Emily [nurses at Pacific NW Fertility] were absolutely incredible. They were caring, proactive, detail oriented and incredibly skilled...The medical staff has been helpful in tailoring our plan to use leftover medications from previous cycles. The finance department is quick to answer with any questions (e.g. how much will this count towards our insurance cap?)...They are incredibly organized and proactive - whether it is the fact that every time I go for monitoring they are able to take my blood early, to the fact that the finance team remembers my name and my situation - they are fantastic.
How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
We absolutely love Dr. Marshall. We came to her from SRM to get a second opinion because it felt like we were trying the same protocol over and over again with no results. When we walked out of that meeting, my husband looked at me and said 'I don't care if the results are different, she makes me feel calm and actually cared for." We switched immediately after. Dr. Marshall suggested a completely different protocol and the results were dramatically different compared to our previous 2 cycles (round 1: 4 embryos - all abnormal, round 2: 2 embryos - all abnormal, moved to Dr. Marshall, round 3: 11 embryos, 2 normal). (I have a genetic condition that results in a small % of normal embryos) Beyond the outcome, the experience felt different - from her proactive communication, to her kind and thorough bedside manner, to the fact that even though she didn't do the retrieval surgery, she popped in right after to check on us - it felt like she was on our side and we were on the same team throughout the entire process. We are doing a 4th round to get a few more embryos and I feel completely confident in Dr. Marshall. Finding her has been a game changer in reducing the anxiety and stress of this entire experience, while also giving us a better outcome.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Ask her for a second opinion if you are thinking of moving to her from another clinic. She had more thoroughly reviewed our file and had a more in depth conversation with us about our situation than our medical team at our previous clinic.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Coming to PNW from SRM and working with Dr. Marshall was a complete game changer when it came to results (2 unsuccessful rounds at SRM, 1 successful round at PNW) as well as when it came to quality and type of care. For this first time in months, we felt like we had hope - we were asked questions about what we wanted, we were told what was going on at each stage and we were treated like we mattered. At SRM, we never saw our Doctor during the cycle - all appointments were with different technicians. At PNW we have seen Dr. Marshall throughout the entire cycle and the nurses have been responsive, pro-active and caring.
Describe the protocols Lorna Marshall used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
The stimulation portion of our IVF treatment plan included 450 IU of Gonal-F, 20 IU mini HCG, and 250 mcg Ganirelix. For the trigger, we used a dual trigger (Lupron and HCG). We have yet to do an embryo transfer since we'd like to bank a few more first.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Emily and Brenna)
Brenna and Emily were absolutely incredible. They were caring, proactive, detail oriented and incredibly skilled. A few examples: when we ordered our medications they knew which pharmacies had which medications available and which had the lowest prices; they had us come in a day early for monitoring given the high dose of medications we were on; they answered the 3000 questions we had when we transferred from our old clinic; they genuinely seems invested in the outcomes and shared out joy with the results; they were diligent in checking on us post-retrieval; every time we debriefed with them after monitoring they were thorough and kind; all of our emails were answered within a day - we have never waited (whether in person or via email) - they are incredibly responsive.
Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
PNW has been fantastic. They are incredibly organized and proactive - whether it is the fact that every time I go for monitoring they are able to take my blood early, to the fact that the finance team remembers my name and my situation - they are fantastic.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility.
We're fortunate to have insurance cover a large portion of the bill. Our coverage is capped, so we still have reason to keep costs down. The medical staff has been helpful in tailoring our plan to use leftover medications from previous cycles. The finance department is quick to answer with any questions (e.g. how much will this count towards our insurance cap?). They have proactively gotten pre-authorizations from our insurance company without us asking or being involved. At SRM, we had to call daily to ask them to submit the pre-auth and then follow up daily to make sure progress was being made, so this was a very welcome change.
Describe Lorna Marshall's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
We indicated our preference to transfer one embryo at a time and Dr. Marshall agreed.

How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine is warm and open, but also very honest and direct. She took time to get to know my husband and I, and what our goals are for our family. I feel that she’s done everything she can to help us bring home a baby, and we have always felt like she was on our side. After each failed cycle, she’s suggested different medications for the next round based off of our previous results. She cites current research to back up her decisions, and collaborates with the entire team of doctors to discuss patient cases, so you really have a team of 5 doctors working for you. She’s made sure that we’re aware of the different fertility methods available, and what our odds are of conceiving with each approach. She gave us a very honest opinion, and has suggested using donor eggs, but she’s been completely supportive of our decision to keep trying with my eggs for now.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
If you’re thinking of scheduling with her, call and get on her calendar since she’s often booked a few months out. Once you’re an established patient it’s easier to get an appointment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Shahine and her team have been very easy to communicate with throughout our IUI and IVF cycles. I email the nurses directly whenever I have questions, and typically receive a response within one day. Dr. Shahine has also called me herself several times to check in after procedures. Additionally, my husband was diagnosed with cancer during one of our cycles. The entire team was very compassionate with us, reaching out just to let us know they were thinking of us. They gave us time to process our new situation while also making sure we had necessary information regarding the implications to our fertility. I’ve broken down in tears several times in their office and they’ve always been patient and compassionate with us.
Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
1/2018 IVF 1: BCP for two weeks, then Follistim 450 IU, Mini HCG 20 units, Ganirelix around day 7. Retrieved 9 eggs/7 mature/5 fertilized, sent 2 for PGS testing and both had multiple abnormalities 10/2018, 4 IUI cycles: used Letrozole to produce more eggs, pregnant on 4th cycle, embryo had not progressed at 6 week ultrasound and miscarried. 1/2020 IVF 2: No BCP, luteal phase start, same meds as cycle 1. 6 mature eggs, 3 fertilized, all arrested 3/2020 IVF 3: No BCP, luteal phase start, planned to add progesterone after ovulation but ovulated late. Added Clomid to first 5 days of stims, and seemed to have more follicles but only half of the follicles produced eggs. IVF 4 planned 5/2020: planning luteal phase start, adding growth hormone to increase quality/quantity of eggs. progesterone, Clomid 150 mg, Omnitrope 2.9 mg, Follistim 450 IU, Mini HCG 20 units

Dr. Shahine’s 3 nurses have been communicative and compassionate. They typically respond to my emails or voice mails within 1 day. They’re always willing to help and find answers for me, and make sure I have all of the necessary information regarding meds and required appointments. They’ve also been compassionate and understanding of all of the emotional ups and downs throughout this process.

she [Dr. Lorna Marshall] is a great physician and advocate. I appreciate all of her compassion and direction. She is compassionate and gracious. Every time, we start with where we are in life. Checking in on how we are doing. While is sounds simple, she has a knack for disarming your nerves to feel comfortable with the most difficult decision of your life...Dr. Marshall is an master of making you feel like you are the only client.
Coming from a clinic that was small and intimate. This [Pacific NW Fertility] clinic made it feel that way even though it much larger. The team assignment allows you to have close contact with the doctor and primary nurse. I appreciate that all of the services, for the most part, are in house...he cost were very straighforward. She is not the most economical nor the most expensive. We appreciate the breakdown of finances.
How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
I spoke of this before. However, she is a great physician and advocate. I appreciate all of her compassion and direction. She is compassionate and gracious. While is sounds simple, she has a knack for disarming your nerves to feel comfortable with the most difficult decision of your life.

As our second doctor, I was so scared to try to build a relationship again. The doctor and staff become part of your family. You share your hopes and dreams with them. She instantly make you feel like you had a team that you could count on.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
This journey is the hardest one of my life and I dare say of my husband's life as well. A war veteran and a lawyer show up beaten and bruised to the office of Dr. Marshall. We loved our last clinic but we felt defeated and scarred by our lost. Our recent embryo transferred failed. The second attempt. It was too much to carry. Dr. Marshall walked in with a warm spirit. She allowed us to vent and made us feel comfortable. I knew it was the right decision to try again and try with someone new. She helped us feel comfortable with that decision. It is hard to balance reality with hope in this industry. Dr. Marshall is an master of making you feel like you are the only client.

[Dr. Broughton is] a straight shooter, but manages to communicate sometimes difficult information/news with compassion. I never felt like she sugar coats things--she always backs up her recommendations with statistics/science...she's a skilled surgeon and is the only doctor out of 3 who was actually able to remove a persistent fibroid and scar tissue...Sadly, two FETs failed, and Dr. Broughton was 100% willing to change protocol for both my ERA cycle and the following transfer
PNWF has an incredible lab and very qualified doctors and nursing staff. Overall I'd say they are pretty conservative in their approach...You'll have a primary doctor, but you'll see most of the doctors in the practice depending on your cycle's timing. My doctor didn't do my egg retrieval, my ERA biopsy, or my third FET. However, they are all great... They are VERY efficient and I never have to wait long when I have an appointment
How was your experience with Darcy Broughton at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Broughton makes is really great during exams and make you feel comfortable. She's a straight shooter, but manages to communicate sometimes difficult information/news with compassion. I never felt like she sugar coats things--she always backs up her recommendations with statistics/science, which I appreciate. When my egg retrieval netted one abnormal embryo and we were devastated, she laid out alternatives for us along with chances of success. We ended up going with the donor route. The clinic requires medicated cycles--I wasn't happy about that, but rolled with it. Sadly, two FETs failed, and Dr. Broughton was 100% willing to change protocol for both my ERA cycle and the following transfer. That mean a great deal and provided some hope. Separately, she's a skilled surgeon and is the only doctor out of 3 who was actually able to remove a persistent fibroid and scar tissue.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Darcy Broughton at Pacific NW Fertility?
All the doctors are busy at Pacific NW Fertility. Come prepared with questions and Dr. Broughton will make sure she answers them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Darcy Broughton at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Broughton has been handling surgeries and treatment for me for a few years now, and is always super warm, friendly, and understanding. She remembers me and my story, and it's clear that she's totally on our team. She knows I like a lot of information and is very willing to answer questions that come up during exams and consult meetings.
Describe the protocols Darcy Broughton used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
For my first egg retrieval, I did an antagonist protocol and I had two follicles that were too far out front and the rest didn't catch up. We did a late cancel and tried an IUI instead. This was unsuccessful. Knowing that I start recruiting follicles quickly, Dr. Broughton shifted my next cycle to a luteal start, which lead to more even growth. I got 10 eggs, 6 mature, 4 fertilized, 0 normal. After meeting with Dr. Broughton, we understood if we cycled again, we'd have about a 20% chance of a normal embryo. We went the donor route, and the clinic requires that donor FET cycles are medicated vs. natural. I cycle regularly, so I was really disappointed to learn this. The first FET failed, and we added baby aspirin for the second, which was a "roll in," meaning I didn't have to do birth control and Lupron before starting estrace patches, and could just start with estrogen. This FET also failed, so Dr. Broughton recommended an ERA and another hysteroscopic surgery to make sure my uterus was OK. It turned out at had a few adhesions, and I was 12 hours pre-receptive, so the testing was worth it. We also looked at endometritis and did ReceptivaDX for endometriosis to cover all the bases--both of those text were negative. I can go into my third transfer with more confidence.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Erin K.)
I worked with two different nursing teams because there are IVF and donor nursing teams--both were excellent. My donor nurse contact is fantastic--she'll spend a long time on the phone with me explaining results and answering questions, and is very kind and compassionate.
Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
PNWF has an incredible lab and very qualified doctors and nursing staff. Overall I'd say they are pretty conservative in their approach--none of the newer treatments available at some other clinics in the US and abroad are offered here. This can be frustrating if you aren't finding success and have limited options for things to try. They are VERY efficient and I never have to wait long when I have an appointment (covid aside), even when they have to double book. You'll have a primary doctor, but you'll see most of the doctors in the practice depending on your cycle's timing. My doctor didn't do my egg retrieval, my ERA biopsy, or my third FET. However, they are all great so as long as you are good at rolling with that, it's not an issue. I 100% prefer being seen by Dr. B. because I know her the best and vice versa, but that's what makes them so nimble and accommodate your personal timing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Darcy Broughton at Pacific NW Fertility.
We initially qualified for the multi-cycle plan, but ended up shifting to donor program after our failed IVF cycle. We paid out of pocket, and I think we put down about $27,000 for the initial plan. Transfers at the clinic are $4500-5600. It's not cheap, but that's no surprise.
Describe Darcy Broughton's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
My doctor/clinic will only do single embryo transfers.

Dr. Shahine was kind and warm, she spoke very gently and smiled a lot, she made me not so nervous during every time. But actually my family and I, we didn't think that she cared about us, during the 2 cycle, I didn't get any phone calls from her, and she didn't give us the exact reason that why with normal results (as her assistance words, "perfect results")EVERYTIME blood test, we just 1 normal blast of the 5 day, I had 31 eggs retrieval. She didn't care, and the same with her team.
They [nurses at Pacific NW Fertility] were polite and kind, but mistakes were made...They didn't response my email in time, even when I was bleeding after transfer and I was doubting about chemical pregnancy, they told me that bleeding was normal, and told me to contact them when I saw tissue came out. I wrote to them about seeing the tissue, and they didn't answer my email anymore. Maybe I interrupted them. Finally I had a chemical pregnancy, they called me to tell me to schedule a new cycle!!!!
How was your experience with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
She was kind, but she didn't care from deep, maybe it's just for us. she told us she didn't know the reason, why blood test were all good, we just failed our 2 cycle. First cycle, 14 eggs retrieval,6 matured, with ICSI with 6 fertilized. 1 normal. she said maybe it was a little bit late for the last trigger. Ok, next cycle, 17 eggs retrieval, 9 matured, with ICSI, 4 were fertilized! 50% failed, and none of them were normal. why ?? she didn't know! just told us unfortunately. excuse me, are you kidding me???
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
Maybe she and her team will take care of you if you were native or not asian people.

2 cycles. 1: 14eggs, 6 matured, 2 for the 5 day, 1 normal. ----transfer, chemical pregnancy, her assistant said that bleeding was normal, and didn't response my email. 2: 17 eggs, 9 matured, 1 for the 5 day. None. We didn't see any report for the updates of embryos or blasts, just their phone call, we didn't know what was going on for the 3 days, or 5 days. Nothing, Nothing was reported.

They were polite and kind, but mistakes were made, and also, they didn't care about us at all. She [Dr. Lora Shahine] seems like a cheerleader initially when you see her online persona and in our first meeting with her. But in reality she was rough with us in some conversations and she knew we had just suffered a horrible tragedy. If we were anxious it was because of our circumstance, and I would hope a doctor would understand a patient’s anxiety in a tragedy and during a pandemic. She showed no such understanding.
[Pacific NW Fertility - Seattle is] Very clean and organized clinic overall. The nurses answered a lot of questions and were very patient and thorough. They were communicative about steps and updates and I always felt in the know with the nursing staff. I did encounter some doctors there that did seem nice. Just not Dr. Shahine. Some of the other doctors seemed great.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
The IVF advocate influencer personality she shows online is not what you’ll be getting.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility?
We went to Dr. Shahine on the recommendations of my OB-GYN and MFM after we endured a tragic pregnancy. She has a presence on social media where she positions herself as a positive influencer and compassionate advocate for IVF patients, but the reality is she was quite rough with us after we went to her seeking help when a pregnancy ended tragically. The online persona and platform she tries to craft is not the experience we had with her. It was the beginning of the pandemic and we were both very anxious and worried and had a lot of questions and concerns about IVF timing, given my age and our difficult circumstances. At one point during one of our calls when I asked some questions, she stopped me to say I had to show her and her nurses more respect. She kept talking about this and we sat there quietly on the line until I said OK please don’t belabor this point, I heard you. For someone who should have experience dealing with anxious people facing difficult situations, she showed us no compassion.
Describe the protocols Lora Shahine used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
She used birth control to get ahold of my cycle to begin. This resulted in fewer eggs than subsequent cycles with a different doctor. With Dr. Shahine’s cycle we only got 12 eggs and 1 mosaic at the end. My subsequent doctor was able to get 18-21 eggs with several cycles and some normal embryos. Dr. Shahine also told me I had diminished ovarian reserve with extremely low AMH. Subsequent cycles with another doctor showed normal range AMH and no indication of DRI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific NW Fertility.
The nursing staff was very kind, and the other doctors I saw at the clinic for monitoring scans were nice too.
Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
Very clean and organized clinic overall. The nurses answered a lot of questions and were very patient and thorough. They were communicative about steps and updates and I always felt in the know with the nursing staff. I did encounter some doctors there that did seem nice. Just not Dr. Shahine. Some of the other doctors seemed great.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lora Shahine at Pacific NW Fertility.

Dr. Rothenberg patiently listens and then gives you science. She helps keep you rational...With Dr. Rothenberg and her team I always felt taken care of. I have recurrent pregnancy loss so their professionalism and empathy was really critical for my emotional well-being during treatment. They were exceptionally good with communication about my situation...Dr. Rothenberg entertained every question I could possibly think of and for every scenario
This is a top notch operation [Pacific NW Fertility]...Don’t underestimate how important communication and the simple act of answering the phone is. Other clinics might call you back after almost always having to leave messages, days later. PNWF will actually pick up the phone...Complete transparency and communication from everyone
How was your experience with Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility?
She isn’t a bulls$&77er about what’s happening or treatment which I really appreciate. Infertility can lead you down some dark places and through many rabbit holes of things people swear worked for them and their miracle babies. Dr. Rothenberg patiently listens and then gives you science. She helps keep you rational.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility?
Research, ask questions, be your own advocate, but listen to your doctor. She gives great information and feedback but you have to ask the questions. Dr. Rothenberg entertained every question I could possibly think of and for every scenario.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility?

Describe the protocols Stephanie Rothenberg used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
Initially everything was on the table for us because our labs came back fine. We elected to do IUI with Letrozole and the HcG trigger shot. We could have started with IVF but decided why use dynamite when a sparkler might work? We were successful, but miscarried.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Team Rothenberg )
My comments for Dr. Rothenberg apply to the nursing staff as well. Complete transparency and communication from everyone.
Describe your experience with Pacific NW Fertility.
This is a top notch operation. I’ve since moved to Indiana and every clinic here is a disappointment in comparison. Don’t underestimate how important communication and the simple act of answering the phone is. Other clinics might call you back after almost always having to leave messages, days later. PNWF will actually pick up the phone.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility.
IUIs are, in total, about $900, and meds are $140.

I think all of the doctors at PNWF are lovely, but Dr. Broughton appears to be the one who works with LGBT folks the most, which was nice for us...[nurses] were super accessible by email and phone. I also saw one of them at the end of every appointment during the ovarian stimulation...each blood draw during the ovarian stimulation was $115. The IVF total was about $23,000, PGTA testing was another $3,500. Each IUI was $376. We ordered our medication from outside pharmacies.

PNWF was recommended to us by our GP. This is one of the most organized and efficient clinics I have ever been to. Oftentimes I was in and out of the office <15min. They are always on time, if not early, and the financial person was always around in case you needed to talk about bills/payments.

Julie was a great communicator she would respond to emails, calls and in person questions with great description explaining everything. She went above and beyond in my care and I felt like I had the best team available...Two [pregnancies] resulted in tubal pregnancies with getting my tubes removed. We did IVF after this and after the first failed attempt of transfer we got pregnant on the second one.
The [Pacific NW Fertility] nursing staff helped me every step of the way. With extra information, providing medication, showing me how to do the medication, printing me out calendars with detailed instructions...Strength is they are very communicative, make sure you pick a doctor that you jive with because you will have lots of appts and will spend alot of time with the doctor and nurses. Make sure you ask lots of questions on how much things cost so you can be prepared.

She [Dr. Shahine] recommends transfering a single embryo since we are doing PGS testing....The first time we met she said how sorry she was that we were there because of how difficult infertility is. She also acknowledged my pain and didn't dismissed it as my previous RE had...after an MRI and how much of endometriosis is shown Dr. Shahine suggested doing IVF first in case my ovaries are damaged in surgery and do a frozen transfer after I'm healed from the surgery...She is very thorough with her explanations and is interested in making sure I understood everything and answered all my questions. She acknowledged my pain due to endometriosis and didn't try to push IVF to "cure endometriosis" like other doctors have.
They [Pacific NW Fertility] are very polite and helpful. Sometimes I feel like I have to ask questions twice because I was misunderstood but I think that might be a language barrier...Clinics in Seattle and Bellevue are in big buildings and eventhough they are not in hospital buildings it makes me insecure to go during the pandemic, even if the stay at home order gets lifted, due to the high traffic of people that there might be.

I haven't started a cycle due to the pandemic. Dr. Broughton is very honest and doesn't try to create false expectations. She has a friendly and warm demeanor but she is not cloying or over the top. When my stimulation cycles started being not successful she adjusted the treatment...always friendly and interested in seeing me...The first four IVF cycles were without clomid or estrace. Estrace lead in clomid flare antagonist IVF.
The service [at Pacific NW Fertility] is good. The facilities in Seattle are nice, you do have to pay for parking. The one thing I don't like is that they have this $500 fee to initiate the IVF cycles that is not billable to insurance. I have no idea why it can't be billed and people there can't seem to tell me why...[the nursing staff] was available to answer my questions and clarify any treatment details.

I was stuck on one treatment that I had in mind, but she [Dr. Lorna Marshall] helped me to see there are other paths...We started with IVF and it was a standard cycle. We used injections...After that we moved onto IUI. The first round had no injections, after that round we started injections. Each round became more refined. Dr. Marshall was very careful with medications and did not want to give too many at once, so she altered cycles as we went. The last two cycles had the injections and progesterone supplements, I believe. The 5th round was successful.
All staff [at Pacific NW Fertility] was very helpful. Our main care coordinator help keep us organized because we lived out of town. They communicated well and we were able to have successful treatment with little traveling...They have awesome financial counselors that helped provide the information before we even started...It feels very private and welcoming. Infertility is hard to deal with and the clinic helps in so many ways. I also love that they have a restroom right when you get off the elevator. Women in treatment often need that right away. The clinic was always clean and has fresh bouquets all of the time. Made the clinic very cheery.
How was your experience with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Marshall was always open and compassionate. My husband and I really wanted a biological child. He had infertility, but through IVF there was a slight chance of success. Dr. Marshall was very honest about our odds. We did IVF, and it did not end in our favor. Dr. Marshall was very compassionate in helping us deal with our loss, and gave us other options we could look at when we were ready. There was no pressure and we felt very supported. We chose another route and now have a 2 year old we love dearly. As a patient I was taken care of and felt valued and heard.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Listen to all advice she has to offer. I was stuck on one treatment that I had in mind, but she helped me to see there are other paths. Thanks to Dr. Marshall we now have a family we always wanted.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Marshall always made time to speak with us and help us through this difficult time. She also made sure all our visits were thorough because we were traveling from 3 hours away, she tried to save us unnecessary return trips.
Describe the protocols Lorna Marshall used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
We started with IVF and it was a standard cycle. We used injections. I do not recall more than that. After that we moved onto IUI. The first round had no injections, after that round we started injections. Each round became more refined. Dr. Marshall was very careful with medications and did not want to give too many at once, so she altered cycles as we went. The last two cycles had the injections and progesterone supplements, I believe. The 5th round was successful.

I honestly don't remember the details. They have awesome financial counselors that helped provide the information before we even started.
What specific things went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to call with results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific NW Fertility.
There was only one instance where a fax was lodged under paperwork. We live out of town and had blood work done locally. When the fax went through it got stuck to another paper. It was an honest mistake and our results were only delayed from a late afternoon to the next morning. We totally understood, but I wanted to be honest in this response. All tests and blood work done in the clinic had no issues. It was our circumstance of living 3 hours away.

Dr. Marshall answered all our questions in a way that we understand. She is very caring and I can feel her concern for us...I pushed for a test to see why I miscarried on the 1st transfer. [she] explained how the test would really not help me but left the decision to me...[she] suggested we do a Progesterone blood test prior to my 2nd transfer and added a vaginal suppository twice a day. It worked...She is very honest with what will work for my situation and doesn't recommend tests that are just waste of time and money.
[nurses of Pacific NW Fertility] Very professional and timely in their response...they care for their patients and when they give me personal instruction, they make sure it's printed on a paper and they still respond to my emails...[clinic] They also have excellent response to COVID, only 3 patients in the lobby during my appointment...[cost]With insurance about $20,000 not including medicine but including genetic testing

Very professional and timely in their response. Emily and Brenna are the best, when I send an email in the morning, I get a response in 2-3hours. She [Dr. Julie Lamb] always advocated for single transfers, but suggested a multiple embryo transfer for my last two embryos...is a great doctor. She tries to make uncomfortable procedures and ultrasounds quick and she makes sure to keep you positive even when shes giving you bad news...is a great advocate for her patients. She will hear you out but ins't overly sensitive...She is a realist, but her communication always comes across genuine....
The [Pacific NW Fertility] facility is nice, clean and everything you would expect. The front staff is mostly great. I have run across some individuals who aren't knowledgeable or helpful, but most of the time they are great...IUI's were around ~$1k, IVF retrieval and 1 transfer was ~$20k, each additional transfer was ~$5k...The communication between the office and the lab isn't great...
How was your experience with Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Lamb is a great doctor. She tries to make uncomfortable procedures and ultrasounds quick and she makes sure to keep you positive even when shes giving you bad news. During my D&C - they were having a hard time getting an IV in me because I was very dehydrated. Dr. Lamb came into the OR and held my hand under the blanket, and tried her best to comfort me. She stayed with me the whole time to make sure I didn't feel scared and alone. She truly understands the emotion behind fertility treatments and is always rooting for us.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Lamb is a great advocate for her patients. She will hear you out but ins't overly sensitive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Lamb is very friendly. She always remembers my husband and I and remembers whats going on in our lives. She is a realist, but her communication always comes across genuine.
Describe the protocols Julie Lamb used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
Started with IUI's, moved to IVF after they were unsuccessful. One egg retrieval followed by a mix of fresh and frozen transfers using both medicated and natural cycles.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific NW Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Claire)
Claire is my favorite. Shes super sweet and very knowledgeable. You can talk to her like shes your good friend - and always super helpful. Responds to my emails very quick.

PNWF is great. The facility is nice, clean and everything you would expect. The front staff is mostly great. I have run across some individuals who aren't knowledgeable or helpful, but most of the time they are great.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Pacific NW Fertility.
They were actually great - most of the time they had my blood drawn in the ultrasound room, which was a nice luxury. They allowed for me to get in and our of there in 15-30 min.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Julie Lamb at Pacific NW Fertility.
IUI's were around ~$1k, IVF retrieval and 1 transfer was ~$20k, each additional transfer was ~$5k.
Describe Julie Lamb's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
She always advocated for single transfers, but suggested a multiple embryo transfer for my last two embryos to eliminate the emotional heartache of another failed transfer given all my stats were normal and I was young and healthy.

The communication between the office and the lab isn't great. When I needed to schedule appts one after the other, they did not coordinate and made it difficult to do so.

I appreciated how Dr Rothenberg dealt with every part of the process...I have PCOS and between myself and husband some other complications as well as medication I'm unable to stop taking, [she] considered it all and developed a strategy to best suit our situation. The most recent stage was fertilization which included lupin injections, estradiol patches (replaced every two days, progressively more over a couple weeks before implantation appointment, then returned to 2 patches every 2 days
Strengths [of Pacific NW] : great location (for me, ~9 minute walk). Majority women-lead, run and in treatment. Pleasant enough set-up and atmosphere, even considering current COVID issues. Offers good safety precautions and guidelines regarding COVID as well. Open on the weekends, and from 7am throughout the week. Weaknesses: really not much of anything - some inconveniences maybe like some procedures or sessions only being doable during the week, or certain times of day, etc. Perhaps a way to directly call/get to your nursing team (even to leave them a message) rather than having to go through the main reception every time
How was your experience with Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility?
Overall I appreciated how Dr Rothenberg dealt with every part of the process. Some of her strengths: knowledge and ability to relate information as in-depth or simplified as wanted (from the original meet and explanation, to follow-ups and subsequent visits); engaging and considerate (able to keep things light-hearted when needed despite such a tough endeavor); thorough and flexible. No weaknesses really spring to mind, honestly.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility?
Definitely see her. Also, just be open and honest with her. She's there to help however she can, and she'll be as transparent and realistic with you as possible.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Rothenberg at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr Rothenberg and her team were always kind, thoughtful and personable. I wasn't just another number but a person seeking their expertise which they were happy to share. They made what could have been an extremely stressful, antiseptic experiece not only manageable but somehow even pleasant. Everything explained, with any concerns or questions were further elaborated on to above satisfaction. They were also just considerate and friendly which helped immensely.
Describe the protocols Stephanie Rothenberg used in your cycles at Pacific NW Fertility and their degree of success.
Sorry but I couldn't go over it all to be honest. I have PCOS and between myself and husband some other complications as well as medication I'm unable to stop taking, and Dr Rothenberg. considered it all and developed a strategy to best suit our situation. The most recent stage was fertilization which included lupin injections, estradiol patches (replaced every two days, progressively more over a couple weeks before implantation appointment, then returned to 2 patches every 2 days), and Progesterone injections (first a type in sesame oil, and then changed to a version in ethyl oleate when I had a bad reaction to the first).
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific NW Fertility.
The nursing staff were an integral part of the process. They were as kind and knowledgeable as Dr Rothenberg throughout the process - those that I interacted with only once or twice, and those who were regularly in contact with me in person or via email or calls in between sessions. When they were unable to fully address any inquiries or issues, they made sure to get me an answer as soon as possible.

Additional: social distancing, safe practices and care are taken throughout. Unfortunately (if understandably) partners are not able to come in in most cases at present because of health/safety concerns re: COVID.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Marshall was always very calm and clear about next steps. This was helpful because there is a lot going on and a lot to remember. She always made herself avail and I felt like we had her full attention and care, even though I imagine she seems many patients...I did three rounds of retrievals and from what I understand it was the standard cycle for all three. I don't remember adjusting anything to get different results. There was a time at the end when the progesterone shots were really painful, so Yvette recommended lidocaine patches and they helped numb my butt.
Yvette [nurse at Pacific NW Fertility] is an angel! I am forever grateful for Yvette and Dr. Marshall for their care. I appreciated the check in emails and calls with each procedure, and really felt like I was their only patient...I haven't' been to other clinics so i don't know how else it's different, but I thought the clinic was set up and easy to work with. They also always called back promptly, which was nice. Billing was easy to work with as well and always avail with an open door for questions.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Meet with her first. If you like her, go with her. i would absolutely recommend it. If not, then move onto someone else. The treatment and relationship is something you need to have full confidence in from day 1.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility?
Dr. Marshall and her team of nurses, including Yvette, made sure to check in during appts even when it was routine and not necessary for them to touch base. However, they made sure they popped in to say hello and offer encouragement along the way. It's the little things that really count!

Describe the costs associated with your care under Lorna Marshall at Pacific NW Fertility.
I think it was about $10-15k per egg retrieval cycle, just for the appts (not including medications). I was fortunate to have Livestrong and Walgreens sponsor my medications because the reason for the retrieval was a cancer diagnosis. I also pay $400 for embryo storage.
Describe Lorna Marshall's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific NW Fertility.
Because we had run PGS on the embryos and knew they were viable, the recommendation was to transfer only one since it had a better chance of taking.
