Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Browne has always been the best choice for a fertility doctor for me and my husband. She truly is knowledgeable, kind and trustworthy. She is science and compassion rolled into one. I would definitely recommend her to anyone seeking fertility treatment. ... Dr. Browne is understanding and takes time with her patients. ... After initial testing I was diagnosed with unexplained infertility and given the go ahead to keep trying naturally for another 3-6 months.
Everyone is kind that I have interacted with from the front desk to phlebotomists. The ultra sound technicians are kind and upbeat as well. The entire staff at any Shady Grove office I’ve been to has been professional and knowledgeable. They will always say good luck as you leave and even though it’s a small gesture it makes you feel like they are truly rooting for you.
How was your experience with Paulette Browne at Shady Grove Fertility?

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Paulette Browne at Shady Grove Fertility?
Be open about your feelings and hesitations. Ask a lot of questions because she is willing to answer them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Paulette Browne at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Browne is understanding and takes time with her patients. Anytime I’ve had to talk with her or her nurse I have never felt pressured or rushed. She explains things and let’s patients talk about concerns, research they have read about and answer any and all questions you might have.
Describe the protocols Paulette Browne used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
After trying for 6 months my husband and I got a recommendation from our primary care doctor for Shady Grove. Having no idea what to expect when we called we were asked if we had a preference for which doctor we wanted and we did not. I feel we truly lucked out on getting Dr. Browne. After initial testing I was diagnosed with unexplained infertility and given the go ahead to keep trying naturally for another 3-6 months. After one very early miscarriage we started on Clomid through my regular OBGYN and without any monitoring. We did this for a few months and nothing happened. Once off of Clomid we contacted Dr. Browne to try IUIs. Right before we were set to start I had a chemical pregnancy confirmed. The next month we started IUIs and Dr. Browne was nothing but helpful throughout the process. I saw her for every monitoring appointment with the nurse. We tried four rounds of IUIs with two different doses of clomid, a round with Letrozole and then a round with both Clomid and Gonal (injectables). Only once with the higher dose Clomid did we get two follicles to respond. At this point we went for more testing showing my AMH and FSH levels were showing signs of diminished ovarian reserve and poor egg quality. Which was what they thought was resulting it early pregnancy losses. After the last IUI cycle we decided we needed a break and took a couple months off. Two months later we ended up pregnant again only to have another early loss. With no insurance coverage for IVF we stopped all fertility treatments for a little over a year. Then just a few months ago decided (with the help of family) to begin IVF using the multicycle discount (I no longer qualified for shared risk due to my levels). I went on birth control for two weeks and then I started on Menopur 150 IUs and Gonal 300 IUs. After three days of that dose they upped my gonal to 450 IUs. I did this dosing for 12 days (added in Cetrotide at day 11). However, due to my response to meds, my levels showing I ovulated and the current COVID 19 crisis my cycle was cancelled after 12 days of stims. Doctor Browne called me personally to apologize and explained everything to me. Then within the hour her nurse also called to check on me to see if I had any follow up questions. They also told me that they had some medication donations as well as different protocol for whenever the next cycle begins. (Switching from antagonist protocol to a flair protocol). They are hopeful that with my AMH and FSH levels this will result in me being able to actual make it to the retrieval stage. At this point it’s just a waiting to game for my period to start again so I can begin my next cycle.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Patrice Smith)
I love Patrice! Warm, kind, funny, understanding and most importantly patient. She takes her time with patients and is just one of the most calming people I know.

Dr. Li has been positive and kind from the beginning...The overall strategy was what came from my baseline and test of bloodwork. I believe my baseline for estrogen is not high enough so I was on Menopur 75 which moved up to 150 on the 7th or 8th day, Gonal stayed at 250 both retrieval’s. For my second retrieval Menopur went up to 150 right away...
My monitoring appointments [at SGF] are always consistent I know what to expect and know I will always get my results within a few hours of the appointment...Always welcoming, efficient and professional. I love the Rockville office more than the DC, and Arlington not because of the people but it’s bigger and feels like a safe haven...Global package IVF #1 $8,000 Storage $1,800 last year fee plus $35 every month FET #1 $4,600 Shared risk program IVF #2 $20,000 Medication total $5,000
How was your experience with Sandy Li at Shady Grove Fertility?
Doctor to patient I would love to see her face to face more. I think in a total 2.5 years we have seen her 3 times. I haven’t seen her yet this year and I’ve done a IVF cycle, retrieval and ERA with transfer approaching. I understand with covid-19 now but I don’t think we met up her her face to face last year either. Would love more of that.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sandy Li at Shady Grove Fertility?
To compile all questions and concerns up front in your consultation because even though Dr. Li has a team of nurses it’s always better to hear your concerns coming straight from your doctor.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Sandy Li at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Li has been positive and kind from the beginning. Even with her positivity she tells it how it is in her soft sweet voice. It’s comforting and encouraging to know she really does care about us as soon to be parents (one day) and just as hopeful as we are to create a family.
Describe the protocols Sandy Li used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
The overall strategy was what came from my baseline and test of bloodwork. I believe my baseline for estrogen is not high enough so I was on Menopur 75 which moved up to 150 on the 7th or 8th day, Gonal stayed at 250 both retrieval’s. For my second retrieval Menopur went up to 150 right away (maybe on day 3) this was successful I believe because we got 17 eggs, 15 mature. Whereas first cycle was 12 eggs, 9 mature. My protocol for my second IVF was to do a ERA and PGS testing since we had 2 failed transfers on good lookin embryos. Waiting on ERA results and PGS testing gave us all 5 genetically normal embryos. So happy and would say my protocol has been successful.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Jenny Wang, Priscllia, Alana)
I had Jenny Wang for 2 years, she was incredible and always on top of it. She left, and now I have a team of 3, I honestly don’t like it that much now I feel like a number because I don’t know who I’m talking to or who will reply. And even though there are 3 this cycle has felt less organized than when Jenny was my only nurse. They are nice and I’m not trying to complain about them they do there job but like I said I’m a number now.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
They are amazing as a whole. No complaints. Always welcoming, efficient and professional. I love the Rockville office more than the DC, and Arlington not because of the people but it’s bigger and feels like a safe haven. I could be bias though because that was were I started and now I live in Virginia so Fairfax or Arlington is closer. All are great.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Shady Grove Fertility.
My monitoring appointments are always consistent I know what to expect and know I will always get my results within a few hours of the appointment.

Global package IVF #1 $8,000 Storage $1,800 last year fee plus $35 every month FET #1 $4,600 Shared risk program IVF #2 $20,000 Medication total $5,000
Describe Sandy Li's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
No I completely understand, I’m under 35 I know the risk.

Dr Doyle is smart, well informed, kind, and shares plenty of information. He was with us from step one, always encouraging us that we'd have great chances at a pregnancy. Even when we encountered setbacks, he explained them well and helped us chart next steps...We tried two IUIs, one with clomid and one with letrazole. I had a bad reaction to the clomid, so Dr. Doyle changed it up after our first failed procedure. We also found other issues along the way, and did two polyp removal surgeries. While initially we weren't certain if IVF would be necessary, as we continued to find polyps, Dr Doyle supported our plan of moving to IVF after just two cycles of IUI, and we got pregnant on that first transfer (plus we have many PGS tested embryos ready to go if we want to give this baby a sibling).
The nursing staff [at Shady Grove Fertility] was fine. All messages were answered in a timely manner, though sometimes questions needed to be asked more than once. I did feel like they were rooting us along, but maybe that they were overworked...We didn't always know how we'd get (negative) results, and sometimes got them via phone vs via portal message. It wasn't a big deal, but would be helpful to know what to expect...We didn't find billing to be incredibly transparent but that wasn't a huge issue for us.
How was your experience with Joseph Doyle at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Doyle is smart, well informed, kind, and shares plenty of information. He was with us from step one, always encouraging us that we'd have great chances at a pregnancy. Even when we encountered setbacks, he explained them well and helped us chart next steps. I can't be more grateful that we got Dr Doyle as a doctor, and genuinely believe our success was thanks to him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Joseph Doyle at Shady Grove Fertility?
Know that he will be there with you through the ups and downs, and don't be afraid to share with him if things outside of your treatment are impacting how you're feeling or how anxious you are. He wants to know, and will treat you and your partner with compassion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Joseph Doyle at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Doyle was fantastic. Even at a large practice, he managed to attend every single one of my procedures, and even called me to check in when I'd had more pain than anticipated. He knew me by name, and would warmly greet me any time he saw me (even if I was just seeing a nurse that day). He nearly cried when we got our positive result, and can't wait to meet our baby.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Concetta)
The nursing staff was fine. All messages were answered in a timely manner, though sometimes questions needed to be asked more than once. I did feel like they were rooting us along, but maybe that they were overworked.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
We had a great experience with Shady Grove Fertility. We found that being a large practice meant it was easy to get appointments, schedule necessary surgeries, and get questions answered 24/7. We do feel like we lucked out on Dr Doyle, since we had such a great personal relationship with him, but don't doubt we would have gotten good care with another provider.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Joseph Doyle at Shady Grove Fertility.
We're still waiting to see - we had some insurance coverage but some things were out of pocket, so we need to figure out our final bill. We didn't find billing to be incredibly transparent but that wasn't a huge issue for us.
Describe Joseph Doyle's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Our doctor was quite clear that with our ages and lack of issues, a single transfer was the only good option, and we agreed with him on that assessment.

Dr Khan is a straight shooter and that’s what I wanted. For me, being human is being realistic and well informed. Dr Khan is both. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Khan is willing to spend time answering your questions and talking to you about different options. Be prepared with your thoughts and it will be a productive conversation.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Khan is a straight shooter and that’s what I wanted. For me, being human is being realistic and well informed. Dr Khan is both. I don’t need to be best friends with my RE - I want a baby and to move on with my life.
Describe the protocols Naveed Khan used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I am doing the shared risk egg donor program — we did 1:2 and anonymously shared the egg haul with another receipt(s). We got 12 mature eggs, 10 of which became blasts, 6 of which tested PGS normal. This is an incredible result so far. We got one blast in two retrievals with my own eggs. I am currently pregnant from our first transfer - although it is early.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Naveed Khan at Shady Grove Fertility.
We paid around $50k for all inclusive 1:2 shared risk program and PGS testing. Baby or money back.
Describe Naveed Khan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Non-issue. I only wanted to transfer one at a time so it wasn’t something discussed at length.

Dr. Widra has many patients and isn't focused on day to day care. That being said, it's clear he knows who we are and the circumstances of our case. When we have worked with him directly he has not rushed us and been patient to answer all questions. Lastly, he has weighed all of our factors carefully as well as our financial planning, and helped us make decisions accordingly.... Dr. Widra is blunt and this is what you notice first and foremost about him. However he is compassionate in his own way
Shady Grove is a large practice and it is a business. They do their best to provide the best care but by nature because it is such a enormous practice you are constantly dealing with different people for all parts of the process. It would be easy to feel like a number but I actually don't. I think it does force you to realize you and your partner are in charge, and you must consistently speak up for yourself at every step. They appear to follow science to the enth degree and for that I respect them.
How was your experience with Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Widra is blunt and this is what you notice first and foremost about him. However he is compassionate in his own way and he is extremely knowledgeable. He is also a leader in a large practice. If you you are looking for a straight shooter with a strong research background, he is your guy.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility?
Don't be afraid to push back and ask questions. He is flexible and understanding but because he is a bit intimidating it can be a bit hard. But I think he respects and appreciates when you are your own advocate.

Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
First cycle (fresh) : Vivelle patch, then Cetrotide injection, then pre eval, initial Dosing: 300 IU Gonal-F and 150 IU Menopur (2 vials), monitored follicles and finished with HCG Trigger injection. Retrevial two days later (7 eggs--> 2 embryos) and then 5 day transfer of 1 fresh and froze the other. Estradiol/Estrace and endrometrin during TWW. Negative preg test. Second cycle(ERA and FET): Estradiol/Estrace 2mg tablets 3 times a day, then lining check, then Progesterone in Oil 1 ml every third day, then 2 endometrin inserts 2x a day. ERA test showed late stage receptivity so timing of oil shots was shifted by 12 hours. Transfered 1 week ago and waiting for preg test.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Carrie )
Carrie is sweet, knowledgeable and typically available. She is our main POC and translates/communicates all information about our protocol. She has endless patience and is a treasure trove of information. She seems to always act on our behalf and has been a true reliable source of comfort and data. For monitoring, we see a revolving door of nurses and other medical staff. They are all nice, some more helpful than others, but haven't been dissatisfied with any. Just know that you really never have a singular person your dealing with on any given day, except our main nurse.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility.
In total for the fresch cycle, including meds, with 50% insurance we initially paid about $6000 for the first cycle. We were later reimbursed some of it due to a higher payout of the insurance. For the ERA and FET we paid I think around $2000 including meds with insurance.
Describe Eric Widra's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Strongly recommended against multiple transfers.

Although we only saw Dr.Bromer a few times during treatment (our nurse was our main go to and was the absolute BEST!), Dr. Bromer took his time and answered our questions at the initial consult. He also checked in during a follicle check appointment to see how things were progressing and called us after PGS testing was complete, before and after egg retrieval, and before our embryo transfer. He was also there on the day of our first ultrasound to congratulate us, show us our baby, and her heartbeat! He was compassionate and we always felt like we were in good hands under his care.
Our nurse Toni made our experience [at Shady Grove Fertility] exceptional. We looked forward to hearing from her and actually miss her now that we are pregnant!...We chose the shared risk program ($22,500) through Shady Grove which included 6 stimulated cycles and unlimited transfers until 1 live birth. We also added the PGS testing for 5,000 for a total of $27,500...The clinic is well organized. From our first contact to set up a consultation, to financial counseling, to our final appointment before discharge, everything always ran smoothly and the staff had all bases covered. I really liked how patients get a patient portal online where you have direct access to your test results, monitoring and treatment schedule, and messaging for your doctor, nurse, front desk, or financial coordinator. If I had to name one weakness it would probably be that they are not open on weekends for monitoring or phone calls, so if one of your monitoring days falls on a weekend you have to travel to another office. For us, it was Rockville, MD which was an additional 30 minute drive.
How was your experience with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
We switched to SGF after a not so great experience with another clinic in Pittsburgh. We had heard so many wonderful things about Shady Grove and were so excited and full of hope to start treatment with them. Dr. Bromer is friendly, positive, and honest, but also to the point which we appreciated. He took his time with us at our initial in person consult. Prior to this, wewere even given a free of charge phone consult before scheduling our first office consultation since we lived 2 hours away from the clinic. Both times he was very knowledgeable, kind and answered our questions about treatment, PGS testing, ICSI, and medication protocols.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
If you are a self-pay patient as we were, don’t be afraid to ask questions about the financial options offered. You will meet with a financial advisor at SGF as well, and she is awesome. But we went with the “shared risk” plan and probably could have gone with the “multi cycle” plan to save some $. Hindsight is 20/20, but be sure to ask questions about chances of success based on your particular situation or diagnosis before making that big decision!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?

Describe the protocols Jason Bromer used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I was treated with a high responder antagonist protocol. I believe the reason for this was that I don’t have any diagnosed fertility issues (although I *may* have some underlying problems, read below) and Dr. Bromer was confident that he could retrieve eggs. I am in a same sex marriage, which was the primary reason my wife and I chose IVF to start a family. However, I also have a substantially sized endometrioma on my right ovary which was likely getting in the way of IUI success and most likely points to endometriosis elsewhere, although I’ve never had the lap surgery done. As far as the treatment plan goes, I was on birth control for 18 days prior to starting 150 IUs of Follistim/Gonal F daily (after my first follicle check this was increased to 175 daily) and 75 IU Menapur, daily. I started Ganirelix 1x per day once follicles were >14mm. Triggered with Lupron. The results were: 16 eggs retrieved, 15 mature, 13 fertilized and 8 made it to 5 day blastocysts. Of those 8, 6 were PGS normal.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Toni)
Our nurse Toni made our experience exceptional. We looked forward to hearing from her and actually miss her now that we are pregnant! She was extremely organized, prompt, friendly, and positive. She made sure to call at a time that my wife and I would be available. She never treated us like a number even though I’m sure she was extremely busy. She always took her time when speaking to us and made sure to answer all of our questions...and we had a lot of questions! Shady Grove Frederick was a wonderful experience and the main reason was because of Toni and the staff there. We always felt like we were in good hands when we were there.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove Frederick is one of their smaller office in my opinion, so we always felt like we were getting individualized attention. We always saw the same friendly faces at each appointment which took a lot of the anxiety away. The clinic is well organized.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Our treatment was not covered at all under insurance. We chose the shared risk program ($22,500) through Shady Grove which included 6 stimulated cycles and unlimited transfers until 1 live birth. We also added the PGS testing for 5,000 for a total of $27,500. We became pregnant on the first try, after 1 retrieval and 1 transfer, so we overpaid! BUT, we probably wouldn’t have changed our decision. Hindsight is 20/20, but I think we would have gone with the shared risk plan ultimately for peace of mind and not knowing if we would have failed transfers or not. To help compare the other plans available...1 cycle at SGF is $10,500. With PGS it’s 14,000. The “multi cycle” plan allows for 2 stimulated cycles with unlimited frozen embryo transfers for $18,500 or $23,500 with PGS.
Describe Jason Bromer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove Fertility in general has a strong stance on only transferring 1 embryo in most circumstances. Personally, we were totally on board with this.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I'm out of state (I live in NC) and feel more connected to Dr. O'Brien than I ever did the doctor I worked with close to home. She's incredibly generous with her time and perspective. After my first transfer failed, she called me and we spoke for 20 mins. After the second failed and another retrieval was needed, she did the same. She was patient and answered my many (many) questions. I've had a lot of complications and challenges - a canceled cycle, DOR, slow response to meds, I can't follow the normal FET protocol (allergic to PIO), my lining doesn't thicken as it should.
We were hoping for 8 eggs but only got 4 [at Shady Grove Fertility]. Lucky for me, 3 fertilized and became AA embryos. One has been transfered (fresh) and resulted in chemical pregnancy. The other two were PGS tested and are normal...Shawn [nurse] has been amazing. I live out of state and she's patient and helpful with ensuring my orders are sent to clinics when I need to monitor and letting me know if results aren't in yet, etc. She's very attentive and answers all of my (many) questions promptly. She delivers bad news with compassion and shows genuine excitement with good news. For instance, when she called to tell me my two embryos were PGS normal, I think she was as happy as I was! You can't fake that. I'm grateful to her - she helps keep me sane in this mess of a process.
How was your experience with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility?
I gush about Dr. O'Brien every chance I get - and I don't have a baby yet! She's a wonderful doctor. She's generous with her time and knowledge, she's innovative and persistent. She's also very honest and open with sharing her thought process. She advocates for her patients. On many occasions, I've been in for monitoring and end up getting a surprise visit. When my first retrieval attempt canceled, she came in and told me herself - and helped me feel ok about it. The next time around, I saw her in the hall and she pulled up my results to review them with me in real-time. She's taken time out of her day to call me to discuss next steps (answering all of my questions for 20+ minutes!) and never makes me feel like I'm not important. She's even emailed me with updates or to let me know she'd call at a certain time. I feel so lucky to have found her!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility?
Don't be afraid to ask questions - she'll answer thoughtfully and thoroughly! She is very transparent so that does mean she shares a lot of information and detail. The first time I spoke with her (phone consult) it was a little overwhelming but now that I know her and her style, I greatly appreciate that.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. O'Brien is the second doctor I've worked with. With the first, I felt like a number. I was worried that might be the case at Shady Grove as well given the size of the clinic. It couldn't be more untrue! She is innovative and unflappable. She always has a solve to help us get past the hurdle. I truly believe she wants me to be pregnant almost as badly as I do. Her belief in me and in our cause helps keep me going when I struggle to believe it myself. She's straight forward, honest, caring and persistent. With her on my side, I have hope that this will work. (And now I'm crying!)
Describe the protocols Jeanne O'Brien used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Retrieval attempt 1 - microflare. I took microdose Lupron for several days and then added in Gonal-F and Menopur. With only three follicles leading, she decided to cancel because she felt my ovaries could do better. Retrieval 1 - estrogen priming. This started with estrogen patches for several days. I added other meds later (forget the details!) and then Gonal-F and Menopur. The doses were pretty high, especially of Menopur. Towards the end I was taking 5 vials! Also added in Cetrotide to help extend the cycle and allow more follicles to grow. I ultimately had 6 retrieved, 4 mature. Retrieval 2- microflare - after the first cancellation on this protocol, she lowered the microdose lupron dose to ensure my follicles didn't grow too fast. This also allowed for lower doses of Gonal-F and Menopur. We were hoping for 8 eggs but only got 4. Lucky for me, 3 fertilized and became AA embryos. One has been transfered (fresh) and resulted in chemical pregnancy. The other two were PGS tested and are normal.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Shawn Thompson)
All of the nurses at Shady Grove are fantastic. Shawn has been amazing.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Shady Grove is massive and I worried I'd be just a number with them. It's not the case. The entire staff is compassionate, helpful and caring. I also believe their size allows them to be cutting edge and have vast experience and expertise. Nothing seems to surprise them - probably because they see it all. I also love that they have a Wellness Center onsite with acupuncture! I participate in the Shared Risk program which gives me peace of mind. It's a wonderful option and is not something I've seen available at many other places. An exception to my high praise is the billing department. To be clear, I don't mean the financial counselors - April Jackson was wonderful. The billing department is unresponsive and challenging to work with. I had a really bad experience with them working with my insurance that caused me a lot of added heartache I didn't need. I mentioned this to my nurse, Shawn, and financial counselor, April, and they helped me escalate it to a senior person on the team to help get resolution.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jeanne O'Brien at Shady Grove Fertility.
The majority of my first IVF cycle (actual procedure) was covered by my insurance. Dr. O'Brien did a lot to help ensure I was able to maximize that. Now I am doing Shared Risk which is EXPENSIVE - but it's worth it for the peace of mind. If you qualify, it's a great option if there's a likelihood that you'll have to do multiple retrievals and transfers.

Don’t wait too long because his [Dr. Eric Levens] appointments fill up fast...When the second transfer ended in another m/c, he suggested uterine septum removal before doing next transfer. This resulted in successful pregnancy. He made sure to do a extra ultrasound because initial HR was low. At this time he was realistic with us and therefore, we knew our chances. Thankfully it was successful and next an revealed higher HR...
When we had issues with our nurse [at Shady Grove] almost making a medication error and us calling to voice our concerns about her sloppiness with our care to office manger, he [Dr. Eric Levens] was the one who called us instead. He immediately switched our nurse and again made us feel at ease...their financial department is one of their worst departments. They are very wishy washy and not clear as to what you need to pay and what your paying for. We actually overpaid by a couple thousand and had to be reimbursed but I had to fight to get them to send the check and finally had to speak to financial manager. The coordinator I was assigned was terrible and I felt like I was constantly fighting to get in contact with her. When I did, I felt like she didn’t know what she was talking about and certainly wasn’t making things very clear.
How was your experience with Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?
He is very good at explaining the process, the good, bad, and ugly. He makes sure you leave his office understanding everything. Several times he called us himself after hours to check in on us whether it was after our retrieval, when I got OHSS, and after each of our losses. He is hard to schedule with because he is sought after which makes booking difficult but when you are able to see him, the wait is worth it.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?
Schedule now. Don’t wait too long because his appointments fill up fast.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?
He would call us on his way home from work. He explained everything in detail. When we had issues with our nurse almost making a medication error and us calling to voice our concerns about her sloppiness with our care to office manger, he was the one who called us instead. He immediately switched our nurse and again made us feel at ease. He was realistic with us and very thorough. He was personable and genuinely upset along with us when we list two out our first pregnancies.
Describe the protocols Eric Levens used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Lupron Antagonist Protocol. I produced 30 eggs. We did ICSI due to make factor. He suggested a frozen transfer due to me showing signs of OHSS, and my medical history. When the second transfer ended in another m/c, he suggested uterine septum removal before doing next transfer. This resulted in successful pregnancy. He made sure to do a extra ultrasound because initial HR was low. At this time he was realistic with us and therefore, we knew our chances. Thankfully it was successful and next an revealed higher HR.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Danielle Kelly)
To be honest she was disorganized from the start. She was very disconnected from the process and took forever to return our calls. At first, she was attentive to emailing but in reality she would read it seems the first paragraph of my email and then fail to answer the rest—so I would find myself having to email her several times to get answers to original email. The final straw was when she got the doses wrong for one of our transfer medications and almost compromised my lining being thick enough for our third transfer. I’m a nurse so I caught it. But we switched nurses after that to Mary. And she was a breath of fresh air.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Their front desk is sometimes clueless and it at times takes several times to get through. However, their after hours line is very responsive. I would keep on top of your financial responsibility because we had to advocate a lot for ourselves to be reimbursed and make sure we were really paying what we were supposed to. Otherwise the clinic is good. They do have a rule to not bring your kids in which we LOVESD because who wants to see a persons child that you can’t seem to have yourself in a place where your paying thousands to have a kid? Just loves that they were sensitive toward that. It’s also renovated and clean. I’m not sure if it’s up and functioning yet but when we left they were building a procedural suite next door for retrieval’s, transfers, etc. which was much more convenient than going to their facility in Rockville. It was working to get accredited by insurance companies first at the time so we couldn’t use it. But still pretty neat! Also parking is terrible. They have one parking garage that services 4 office buildings. So arrive early to make sure you get a spot on time.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility.
We were lucky. Our treatment was covered partially by insurance. So our max OOP was $3500. However, their financial department is one of their worst departments.
Describe Eric Levens's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
He actually works with NIH to prevent cases of negligence where fertility doctors are allowing transfers of 3 embryos (for example) and having sextuplets. He is advocate for only transferring one (based off our personal history) because we already had high risk factors for pregnancy.
What specific things went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility?
 • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
 • Lost paperwork
 • Lost appointments
 • Failed to order appropriate test
 • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility.
This all had to do with our first nurse Danielle Kelly. She lost paperwork, ordered wrong doses of medications and sent wrong prescription to pharmacy (that we had done legwork to find I must note because medication was special script), she also seemed to always be out of office. This all contributed to mistakes that were made. I don’t think it was the other staffs fault.

Dr. Bromer was an outstanding caregiver...was very clear that our chances with our own eggs might be low, given our age, history, and diagnosis. How was your experience with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Bromer was very clear that our chances with our own eggs might be low, given our age, history, and diagnosis. Every step of the way, he was trying to save us time, money, and heartache. In all his communications, he was warm, compassionate, and candid. He incorporated our wishes into his own treatment recommendations, and listened carefully to all our questions and concerns. We eventually conceived using our own eggs (at age 42) in an IVF cycle with Dr. Bromer. We will be forever grateful to him for his guidance, treatment plan, and advice.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
You can totally trust his guidance—he is up-to-date on all the most current research, and he truly cares about his patients.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Bromer was an outstanding caregiver. He was candid about our chances, but willing to listen to our wishes and guide our care accordingly.
Describe the protocols Jason Bromer used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I was 42.5 when my cycle occurred. Dr. Bromer used a standard IVF antagonist protocol with bcp priming for us. He also recommended ICSI due to the age of my eggs (we had avoided ICSI in a prior cycle because we had no MFI issues). Dr. Bromer also recommended a freeze all cycle, given my response in a previous cycle. He was also receptive and encouraging when it came to my own reading on supplements; with his approval, I took melatonin, myo inositol, ubiquinol, fish oil, and MTHFR prenatal vitamins. We did not use PGS. We had three 5AA embryos and one 5AB embryo to freeze. We transferred one embryo, which resulted in the birth of our first child at 43.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Toni Benjamin )
All the nurses at the Frederick office were amazing, but Toni was just outstanding. Kind, funny, encouraging, and sensitive—we just adored her.

Describe Jason Bromer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
I was the one with the strongest preference for eSET, given what I had read about the risks of multiple transfers. Dr. Bromer was in agreement with our preference, and did not urge us to transfer more than one embryo, despite our age.

Dr. Bromer was always great to talk to. He spoke matter of factly, but was always warm and compassionate. He always took the time to answer my questions in depth and with thought. Anytime I needed more information or wanted an additional test, he would take the time to explain and/or do the testing for my reassurance...If I had a question, he would thoughtfully answer it, and let me pursue additional testing to appease me.
The [Shady Grove Fertility] billing department left something to be desired. Sometimes they took a few days to get back to you. We had insurance but I wish they would have provided a better idea of the costs prior to treatment. They also did not release every single result in the portal, which kind of drove me crazy because I'm very data driven. I had to pull every last detail of information out of them. I understand most people probably don't want or need every detail, so it's just what they're used to doing. Overall I really enjoyed the clinic and would highly recommend them.
How was your experience with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
While I was a patient out of the Pittsburgh office, I did only get to meet with Dr. Bromer a handful of times, although I did have telehealth follow up visits. I always felt he explained everything thoroughly, and I always agreed with the treatment decisions he made. If I had a question, he would thoughtfully answer it, and let me pursue additional testing to appease me.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
Be open and honest, and you'll get open and honest back!

Describe the protocols Jason Bromer used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I was started on a normal dose of a standard antagonist protocol due to my unexplained infertility. I typically had an AFC of 15 but this cycle they could only confirm 8. 150IU Gonal-F and 50IU of Menopur. I had monitoring appointments often. I did have lots of follicular growth, but it was slow. Dr. Bromer increased my dosage gradually over the next few days until I was up to 400IU Gonal-F and 150IU Menopur. After 14 days of stims, I was able to trigger with HcG, 10,000IU. I ended up with 23 follicles, 20 eggs retrieved, 17 mature, 12 made it past 5 day, ended up with 8 blastocysts with the remaining 4 that stopped developing. We ended up with 4 PGT-A tested euploid embryos, 1 low-level mosaic (which they will allow me to transfer), 2 high-level mosaic, and 1 abnormal
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Shady Grove Fertility.
The nursing staff was good. They always called on time and provided the results in a compassionate and informative way. They were good about replying back in the portal. The clinical team in the office were separate from the nursing staff. I loved the clinical team, they were always so nice and happy to see you. You could tell they truly wanted the best for you. They would always describe what they were seeing so you knew what was going on before you left.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Our insurance covered 80% of treatment, so we needed to pay the other 20% and we had a lifetime maximum. I believe we paid $800 for each IUI and our total IVF cost with PGT testing and 1 FET was around 9k.
Describe Jason Bromer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Dr. Bromer recommended eSET for us, and we agreed.

Dr. Chason is an extremely compassionate and warm person and that is extended through her team, her bed side manner, and delivery of information etc. I feel grateful to have her as my treating clinician...she has strong analytical skills to assess what appropriate next steps may be if one course of action did not pan out as expected. She is compassionate, empathetic and realistic.
I truly enjoy my [Shady Grove Fertility] office location. I have experienced compassionate and kind people...[nurse] Joan is a dream come true. She is a very organized person. She is patient, empathetic, and informative. Her response time is quick and she is accessible...For a new patient using insurance I would encourage you to know your benefits well, do not rely just on what is being shared. The policy holder will always have more access to their plan than the provider.
How was your experience with Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Chason is accessible. While most of my treatment I communicated with my nurse, I could always be in touch with her if needed. I feel she has strong analytical skills to assess what appropriate next steps may be if one course of action did not pan out as expected. She is compassionate, empathetic and realistic.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility?
Trust her, and ask questions if you need more for your own understanding. She is patient and will make sure you walk away knowing what the plan is and that you understand it as much as you want to.

Describe the protocols Rebecca Chason used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
1st cycle was an antagonist protocol using birth control start, Menopur, Gonal F, Ganirelix and Lupron trigger (I do not recall the dosage). I had a high AF count and we wanted to prevent OHSS, and she felt I would be a good responder. I stimmed for 8 days, triggered on the 9th. We retrieved 21 eggs, 13 mature, 4 fertilized, 2 made to it to blast and 1 was euploid. That transfer resulted in a chemical pregnancy. For the 2nd round we made a change to improve our fertilization rate, we switched to a Lupron stop protocol. The goal was to produce better quality eggs to increase fertilization. I used Lupron for 9 days once I had a positive ovulation test, then I stimmed for 8 days triggering on the 9th using Menopur, Gonal F and a HCG trigger. We retrieved 19 eggs, 13 mature, 12 fertilized, 10 made it to blast, 7 euploid, 1 transferred resulted in a miscarriage. This last round is still being monitored for my HCG levels to drop and we will discuss next steps. I between round 1 & 2 retrieval I had a mock transfer which discovered a polyp, and between round 2 retrieval and transfer I had one hysteroscopy to remove the polyp and endometritis was discovered as well as low visibility of my right tube. I had a course of antibiotics for 2 weeks to rid the inflammation, followed by an endometrial biopsy which showed improvement but endometritis still present. At that time I opted for an additional hysteroscopy for a repeat biopsy and to look at the right tube. The biopsy showed the endometritis cleared, and the right tube entrance had scar tissue that was cleared.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility.
Most of my treatment was covered by insurance, outside of pgt-a testing, and embryo freezing cost.
Describe Rebecca Chason's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
My doctor recommended the transfer of a single embryo. We were informed as to the reasoning and stats behind that recommendation.
What specific things went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility?
 • Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility.
Conflicting information from a financial counselor regarding my insurance benefits. I had called my insurance and was ensured that a particular analysis for my husband was covered by insurance. I was told by the clinic it was not, this was not correct as my plan was different than the traditional plan they had seen which did not cover the analysis in question.

Dr. Bromer understands there’s more to infertility and every patient is different. He sees me as a person, not just lab numbers, and treats me with care and respect...He seems to understand how challenging and stressful this is, so he presents all the information up front and made me aware of all my options and the chances of it working realistically. No false hope, but he’s kind about it, and willing to work with the patient
The entire staff at SGF is beyond kind. They all understand this is an emotional and stressful situation and they make me feel valued and respected. They’ve listened to fears and concerns with patience. They’re exceptional to me...If you’re within a driving distance of a few hours, it’s worth using them. Compared to other clinics and doctors I’ve seem, SGF’s approach seems to be treating an individual compared with treating a “diagnosis.”
How was your experience with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Bromer looked over my entire medical history, not just the lab numbers. Fertility science is constantly changing and he seems understanding of that, whereas other doctors I’ve had historically are inflexible. Dr. Bromer is honest and direct while being caring. He seems to understand how challenging and stressful this is, so he presents all the information up front and made me aware of all my options and the chances of it working realistically. No false hope, but he’s kind about it, and willing to work with the patient. I have the utmost respect for him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
See him. You won’t regret it.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Bromer understands there’s more to infertility and every patient is different. He sees me as a person, not just lab numbers, and treats me with care and respect.
Describe the protocols Jason Bromer used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I will be using an IVF cycle with a sperm donor. The amount and types of medications will be closely monitored dependent on my body’s response to them.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Jamie)
The entire staff at SGF is beyond kind. They all understand this is an emotional and stressful situation and they make me feel valued and respected. They’ve listened to fears and concerns with patience. They’re exceptional to me.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Previously my only complaint would’ve been access to Shady Grove clinics, but as they’re spreading and opening new locations, it’s no longer a concern. If you’re within a driving distance of a few hours, it’s worth using them. Compared to other clinics and doctors I’ve seem, SGF’s approach seems to be treating an individual compared with treating a “diagnosis.” A friend recommended them to me after bad experiences at other clinics and I’m so grateful she did.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jason Bromer at Shady Grove Fertility.
There are several treatment options with different costs associated, including shared responsibility, income based discounts, and the one I used- military discounts.

The kindest thing that Dr. Swelstad did was give me a call the day before the FET. I was unable to pick up his call, but he left a voicemail and upon listening to his message, I felt more at ease with the procedure the following day. I really appreciated the couple of minutes that he took out of his day to reach out...Although the IUIs were unsuccessful, Dr. Swelstad's guidance and medication adjustments were welcomed
Generally, my experience at [SGF] Fair Oaks has been a good one. My favorite person (other than Dr. Swelstad) at the Fair Oaks office was Tiffany who (a majority of the time) drew my blood. She is so lovely and nice. I always enjoyed by short interactions with her. The front staff is nice enough. Sometimes the mornings are very busy (most of my appointments) but there is that 1-2 times where I was the only person in the wait room.
How was your experience with Brad Swelstad at Shady Grove Fertility?
I wish that I could have had more face-to-face interactions with Dr. Swelstad but I understand that at a large clinic such as SGF, that's not always possible. In the two times that Dr. Swelstad completed my ultrasound (during two IUI rounds) he always made me feel at ease and made me feel like he knew who I was based on our virtual meetings. Dr. Swelstad is direct and considerate. He added dashes of humor to our interactions and I liked that about our conversations. Although the IUIs were unsuccessful, Dr. Swelstad's guidance and medication adjustments were welcomed. My husband and I have been very happy with our relationship with Dr. Swelstad. We are at the beginning of an active pregnancy journey and we hope to be able to share happy news with Dr. Swelstad by the end of this year!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Brad Swelstad at Shady Grove Fertility?
Don't be afraid to ask Dr. Swelstad questions. He might not give you warm, fuzzy responses, but he is honest and clear.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Brad Swelstad at Shady Grove Fertility?
The kindest thing that Dr. Swelstad did was give me a call the day before the FET. Although I am reviewing the Fair Oaks clinic, I also went to the Fairfax location and the SGF location in Rockville. Generally, my experience at Fair Oaks has been a good one. My insurance is pretty terrific (thank goodness!), so our only costs were the PGTA testing and freezing our embryos. I also had a co-pay for the meds, but that wasn't bad.

She [Dr. Esposito] was extremely compassionate. Very willing to take the time to talk to me about all of my concerns. Allowed me to ask questions and didn’t make me feel stupid for any of the questions I asked...For my egg retrieval I was on menopeur, and gonal F. It yielded 15 eggs, 11 fertilized and 4 made it to day 5/6 with 2 testing genetically normal through PGT-A testing. For my first transfer I was on estrogen and 5 days of PIO prior to the transfer. For my second transfer, after an ERA cycle adjustments were made to my protocol.
My nurse [at Shady Grove Fertility] was always willing to answer my questions. She was available by both phone and the portal. She made sure I understood everything completely and would review multiple times to make sure I understood...At times the office was difficult to get ahold of by phone. The front desk staff at times was not very welcoming. As a whole the clinic is very organized and extremely responsive. I would want a new patient to know that it’s ok to be persistent. That you must advocate for yourself not only with your doctor and clinical care team but at times with the front desk staff in regards to scheduling appointments.
How was your experience with Melissa Esposito at Shady Grove Fertility?
There was never a time where I didn’t feel heard or seen as a patient. Dr. Esposito was always understanding of my concerns and hesitations. She took the time to explain to me anything I had Questions about. After learning my son was born 14 weeks prematurely she made sure to check in to see how he was doing and has continued to check in on him. She truly cares about her patients and wants them to be successful in their treatment.

Dr Malik went through our entire history...She was willing to do all of the potential testing that I wanted to do and provided unique guidelines based on our situation. She always approached things very methodically instead of emotionally - laying out the facts and the possibilities that we could consider (but ultimately we were the ones who made the decision of how to move forward)...Overall, I felt like she was very invested in our journey and I trusted her.
SGF strengths - compassionate staff, lots of appointment availability so you can get the appointments you want, relatively short wait time, depth of knowledge by practitioners SGF weaknesses - the only negative is that the clinic you sign up with is the one you have to always go to. I signed up for a further clinic because they had the soonest appointment time and then I got locked into that as my location for 1.5 years.
How was your experience with Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Malik is a very methodical, practical doctor. She approaches things with a level head vs. being emotional and lays out multiple paths that you can consider (including the risks and benefits of each). I had a few other fertility specialists that I knew in other states that I got second opinions from, and she always welcomed that other feedback/insight and never felt overly protective of doing things "her way" if I felt strongly about doing something else. When our IVF egg retrieval went poorly (we retrieved eggs but discovered poor egg quality and did not get to the blastocyst stage), she came prepared with a new treatment plan for us to adjust with this new data. Ultimately IVF is a long process and each new test / result is a new data point to customize in the future. I felt like Dr. Malik was in it for the long haul with us. We did get spontaneously pregnant after our failed IVF cycle and Dr. Malik made sure to be the one to do our ultrasound at 7 weeks. She also made sure to be our doctor on days where I needed certain procedures done since she knew my chart the best. Overall, I felt like she was very invested in our journey and I trusted her. Even though we got spontaneously pregnant, I would have felt comfortable going forward with another IVF cycle with Dr. Malik despite the first one not going well because I felt like she had a customized plan as a next step. Would definitely recommend her to others.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Do your own research and ask questions - Dr. Malik will lay out all the facts but for us she relied on us to make the final decision on how to move forward. This allows the patients to have control over the situation but I think it's good to understand a bit on your own before going into appointments.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Malik went through our entire history which included 2 missed miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy. She was willing to do all of the potential testing that I wanted to do and provided unique guidelines based on our situation. She always approached things very methodically instead of emotionally - laying out the facts and the possibilities that we could consider (but ultimately we were the ones who made the decision of how to move forward).
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Rachel)
Rachel was my nurse at SGF and she was amazing - she was my primary POC during the process even though I knew Dr. Malik was the one dictating my treatment plan in the background. Rachel was always available to talk and I felt like she really was my cheerleader during the entire process. The one thing for patients to remember is that I think sometimes the nurses can be overly positive - and its always good to remember that you never know the results until they officially come in. Regardless, I always appreciated talking to Rachel and I loved working with her.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility.
I can't compare costs to other clinics but their financial team gave me a full breakdown prior to every treatment / procedure so I was 100% clear on what my costs would be

Dr. Reh was just the person we needed on our team during our fertility journey. My husband and I were diagnosed with unexplained infertility and Dr. Reh was so direct and clear with information and options, yet also positive and optimistic. Her team is amazing and I always felt like I was able to get into contact with the right person when I needed. She listened to me, validated me, and gave me options when options were available - I felt like I had space and respect to make decisions that were best for my husband and I. I appreciated her direct nature and honesty throughout the entire process.
Currently 37 weeks with a little boy thanks to Dr. Reh, her [SGF] team, and IVF...My nurse, Lana, is the greatest human on the planet, and the NP I worked with, Tammy, is also the greatest human. I loved working with them! The girls at the front desk were also so kind and helpful, the nursing staff that drew blood were lovely - overall a 10/10 office...My only complaint is that sometimes wait times for monitoring appointments reached 15-20 minutes. Otherwise, I was always able to get an appointment when I needed, felt comfortable and safe in the clinic environment, and it was generally easy to access

During monitoring appointments, I didn't always see her, but a) I loved the team so much that it didn't matter who I saw and b) if I ever needed to see her directly or speak with her, it was easy to do! Currently 37 weeks with a little boy thanks to Dr. Reh, her team, and IVF!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
She is willing to consider all options!
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
For IUI cycles, Dr. Reh prescribed Letrozole with a trigger shot. All 4 IUI cycles resulted in at least 1-3 appropriately sized follicles. None were successful. For egg retrieval, I followed a "standard" protocol and had a successful retrieval with 19 eggs, 13 mature, 11 fertilized, 6 day-5 embryos, 4 PGT-A normal.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
I was an out of pocket patient. An IUI cost about $2,000 per cycle with medications. I paid for the Shared Risk Program with PGTA testing - this cost about $26,000. Medications for egg retrieval were about $4,000. Overall, I paid about $40,000 throughout treatments.

Use Dr Garde if you want someone matter of fact and willing to explain things fully. I don't require a ton of empathy or bedside manner, someone who needs a high level of warmth may not get it from her simply because she's busy and direct... has many patients and is booked fully and isn't always the one to reply to emails or even do all the procedures...she was there for the at the times that mattered.
SGF is a well-run operation with great amenities (offices, online portal, etc). They have a strong and big team and it shows. I was lucky to "find" a normal embryo by my 3rd IVF cycle (age 40). I get the sense SGF runs a pretty standard set of protocols. For women / couples requiring highly custom protocol or who want to do things that are more off the normal path, another clinic may be preferred.
How was your experience with Rachana Garde at Shady Grove Fertility?
Shady Grove, and Dr Garde, may not be for everyone but they were great for me. They run a big operation, and some people may not like the feel. For me, there was always someone there to respond or see me on a moment's notice, bloodwork is run quickly, etc. Dr Garde clearly has many patients and is booked fully and isn't always the one to reply to emails or even do all the procedures (her nurse team and other doctors assist). This doesn't bother me - They were always well-coordinated and she was there for the at the times that mattered.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Rachana Garde at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Garde, along with SGF, see a lot of patients. However, she always knew me and knew where I was in my treatment. She was direct while also being empathetic to my scenario. She gave me advice when I asked for it. She wasn't always the person to see me when I went in (that's the way SGF works), but she did make an effort to accommodate doing my transfers when I wanted her to, and she once stopped in to see me even when she wasn't my scheduled doctor.
Describe the protocols Rachana Garde used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
We did 3 egg retrievals, all with the same drugs (gonal-f, cetrotide) but varied amounts. I produced a high number of eggs for my age but after my first retrieval it became clear that quality could be my issue. I did genetic testing in my first two cycles and decided not to in my 3rd cycle (then eventually came back and did genetic testing on 2 frozen embryos from that 3rd cycle - now my daughter!).

I don't recall exactly, but my insurance covered the vast majority (I was very lucky for this) but not genetic testing, which I recall being about $5000 per attempt.
Describe Rachana Garde's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
SGF policy is pretty strictly adhered to. If embryos are genetically tested and normal, then only one can be transferred. They won't transfer abnormal embryos. And in the case where we didn't do genetic testing, I was allowed to do multiple and I chose to transfer 2 embryos at once in consultation with Dr Garde (I did this twice - once was fresh and I failed to get pregnant; once was frozen and I miscarried).

[Dr. Andrea Reh] made it clear that she may or may not be the doc to perform some procedures based on the day and timing of the cycle...She made recommendations but also allowed me to make my own informed decision. Due to having endometriosis and one blocked tube IVF is the preferred treatment...Following initial ultrasound she reported to her staff that I would have to take birth control for one month prior to proceeding. I just started Clomid cycle with Gonal f injection
Weakness [at Shady Grove Fertility]: financial services are helpful. I do not like that I don't receive an itemized bill of what I am actually spending money on SPECIFICALLY...Overall the entire SGF team at all locations work together for treatment...Staff are all phenomenal. Kind, personable, helpful. One nurse shared her own SGF story with me (she was a patient before becoming and employee)...It was explained that single embryo is preferred. I am not at this stage yet so we will see what happens in the future
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
At this time I have only met with Dr. Reh once for my consultation. She made recommendations but also allowed me to make my own informed decision. Due to having endometriosis and one blocked tube IVF is the preferred treatment. My insurance does not cover IVF so I decided to begin with IUI for a few cycles. Dr. Reh moved forward with my desired treatment. Following initial ultrasound she reported to her staff that I would have to take birth control for one month prior to proceeding. I just started Clomid cycle with Gonal f injection
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Have all documents in order to present to her so that she can review them with you in the room. If she has questions she can ask. Make notes of your questions and ask them at the end...once she is finished talking
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh was thorough and very matter of fact which is a quality I like. She presents as a little rehearsed in effort to ensure she gets all pertinent information out prior to allowing questions to be asked. My suggestion with her would be to take notes as she speaks and at the end seek clarification on details. She is open about the structure of SGF in that you will not likely meet with her after the consultation but she and her team are involved in monitoring the process closely. Dr Reh also made it clear that she may or may not be the doc to perform some procedures based on the day and timing of the cycle. Overall the entire SGF team at all locations work together for treatment
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Initial ultrasound, one month of birth control, Clomid (5 days) and Gonal f injection plus trigger shot, IUI. I am currently still taking the Clomid
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Caitlin Herbert)
Staff are all phenomenal. Kind, personable, helpful. One nurse shared her own SGF story with me (she was a patient before becoming and employee).
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I appreciate them for remaining open during COVID 19 madness. They have taken measures to reduce number of people in clinic during monitoring hours. Weakness: financial services are helpful. I do not like that I don't receive an itemized bill of what I am actually spending money on SPECIFICALLY.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
Kaiser insurance: thus far $377 for Rx, $450 for IUI, $30 office visit
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
It was explained that single embryo is preferred. I am not at this stage yet so we will see what happens in the future

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
His [Dr. Levens] knowledge and competence is without question. ... Because he was not available without an appointment, it was difficult to speak with him about questions or concerns. This was frustrating because it was my first cycle. He is thorough and compassionate if the news is not as hoped as was our case. He has adjusted treatment based on our specific results and explained the next steps.
The clinic [Shady Grove Fertility] overall is doing a great job however we noticed a lack of consistency in result reporting in dealing with the nursing staff. My nurse would call and not give the details of my monitoring appt or test results unless I asked specifics while others nurses would give me the results without prompting. After talking with my doc the day I was scheduled to trigger another nurse was trying to get us to buy more meds! She had not looked at my chart really and we could tell she had no idea but it did cause some confusion that day.
How was your experience with Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?
His knowledge and competence is without question. As a doctor myself, I had to remind him that I wanted to know every detail without the sugarcoating or layman's optimism. Because he was not available without an appointment, it was difficult to speak with him about questions or concerns. This was frustrating because it was my first cycle. He is thorough and compassionate if the news is not as hoped as was our case. He has adjusted treatment based on our specific results and explained the next steps.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?
Patients have all different backgrounds and those who want to know more detail should be treated accordingly within reason.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?
It was at times difficult to speak directly with him, however, I understand that he is extremely busy as the medical director of the clinic. When I did leave questions, he definitely would call back with an answer within a day or two. He was well versed with my record when we did talk.
Describe the protocols Eric Levens used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Based on AMH, FSH, it was determined that my ovarian reserve was more than adequate and similar to someone approximately 5-6 yrs younger however quality was still unknown. The protocol was about 15 days and began with gonal f 150iu and 75iu of menopur. The menopur was increased up to 225 in the last week. I took doses of Cetrotide and used Leuprolide as the trigger. 17 eggs were retrieved, 13 of which were mature. 9 embryos were fertilized with 2 making it to day 6. Embryo testing of the 2 showed chromosome 21 trisomy and chromosome 21 monosomy. My husband and I were sent out for karyotype testing and awaiting results.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Courtney Schmidt)
She was very responsive and willing to go the extra mile if needed. She was always accessible which was a plus considering that I could not always reach my doc. She would pass along any message or question so that I could get an answer quickly.

We did a multicycle package with a military discount and paid additional 5k for blast genetic testing. Altogether the services were 18k without medication.
Describe Eric Levens's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Given our age and no children, we will be transferring more than 1 blast if available.

[Dr. Nair is] Warm, honest, compassionate...She truly cares about her patients, and can evaluate each patient’s specific needs to determine the best course of action. She tells the truth, shares empathy, and always strives for the best outcomes for each patient...was willing to be as aggressive and patient as I was willing to be. It took a maximum amount of ovarian stimulation each cycle, and I took 4-6 days longer than average to get to the right blood level numbers (showing optimal ovarian stimulation) each cycle. Other doctors would have likely cancelled my first cycle when it took so long. Dr Nair did discuss this possibility and ramifications with me, but did let me keep trying a bit longer. Turns out, I’m just a slow goer; we successfully harvested 6 eggs the first round, which I was ecstatic about given my poor indicators. She helped me maximize each of 3 cycles, through medication decisions, and was my cheerleader throughout the process. We harvested 18 eggs over 3 cycles (over 2ish years) and froze 17 mature eggs. A few years later, my new husband and I are starting the process to thaw and fertilize and hopefully transfer an embryo! As with the freezing procedures, I trust and valie her recommendations 100%.
My medication costs were at the highest end of the spectrum, due to my situation. Dr Nair’s team [at Shady Grove Fertility] gave me tips on how to find the most cost effective pharmacies to fill them...many positives include efficiency, a proven track record, multiple locations and ease of access, and great historical data on outcomes. Despite this “Big Center” status (for lack of a better term), I have never felt like “just” a number or “just” a source of revenue.
How was your experience with Anitha Nair at Shady Grove Fertility?
Warm, honest, compassionate, and expert. I fully trust her advice and recommendations and feel like I could not have a better doctor for this journey. She truly cares about her patients, and can evaluate each patient’s specific needs to determine the best course of action. She tells the truth, shares empathy, and always strives for the best outcomes for each patient. She is a Godsend.

This is the doctor that you want to work with! She’s on your side and in your fight as much as you are.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anitha Nair at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Nair is exactly what you want in a fertility doctor: open, honest, transparent, warm. She has an excellent bedside manner, and gently shares all data (good & not so good) so that you can make the best decisions. She also inquires and cares about your emotional health, not just your physical health. I cannot recommend her enough.
Describe the protocols Anitha Nair used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
During early processes for elective egg freezing at age 37, it became apparent that I had diminished ovarian reserves and might not have the outcome I wanted. Dr Nair delivered these facts gently and compassionately, and was willing to be as aggressive and patient as I was willing to be. Success w/ Doc Too early to know
She [Dr. Durso] is matter-of-fact with the combination of age, BMI, personal diagnosis, and predicted outcomes but that is something my husband and I need in our doctor. ... She would’ve stopped us after our 3rd IUI and moved us to IVF but we weren’t comfortable without one more try. She listened to us and gave it a 4th and final attempt. Now we are comfortable moving into IVF with ICSI since our attempts revealed MFI in addition to my PCOS.
From the moment we started going to the Fredericksburg SGF location, we felt welcomed and cared for. We are usually seen right at our scheduled appointment time, which I can’t say for most doctor’s offices. The entire staff - from the PAs/Administrative to the nursing staff to Dr.Durso - are the perfect fit for us. ... Our primary nurse is Andrea Williams and she is absolutely terrific. We always feel welcome in our office and she is an excellent listener and has the most compassionate heart. She is great with communication in person, over the phone, and in email.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at Shady Grove Fertility?
The only thing that may be considered a weakness to some is that Dr. Durso can be a bit socially awkward when it comes to small talk or casual conversation. She’s a great listener, though, if you like to chat. Regardless, when it’s time to talk treatment she really knows her stuff and gives you a clear plan and predicted outcomes, and we leave comfortable with every appointment we have with her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at Shady Grove Fertility?
Be open and honest with her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nancy Durso at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Durso was very kind from our initial consultation and actively listened to what brought us to her for treatment. When I cried during the consult she simply paused, pushed a box of tissue to me and allowed me to get it out. Once I was done crying she asked if I was ready to continue. That was very kind and I did not feel judged. She is matter-of-fact with the combination of age, BMI, personal diagnosis, and predicted outcomes but that is something my husband and I need in our doctor.
Describe the protocols Nancy Durso used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Because of my PCOS we had to use Provera to jumpstart the first treatment, as well as Letrazole tablets because previous attempts with Clomid (at my former OBGYN) failed. We did 4 IUIs using Gonal-F and triggering with Ovidrel. I was also placed on progesterone suppositories and Estrace, both taken vaginally. None resulted in pregnancy but male factor infertility was revealed.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Andrea Williams)
Our primary nurse is Andrea Williams and she is absolutely terrific. We always feel welcome in our office and she is an excellent listener and has the most compassionate heart. She is great with communication in person, over the phone, and in email. Responses are always very timely. And if you’re a hugger, she gives good ones. We also meet with Nurse Rosie for most of our appointments and I can’t say enough good things about her either. She’s an excellent listener, very thorough with the scans and walks you through what she’s seeing. She is gentle with “Wanda” and makes the entire visit somehow not seem overly intrusive. Nurse Andrea and Nurse Rosie make you feel more like family...not a number.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.

We are usually seen right at our scheduled appointment time, which I can’t say for most doctor’s offices. The entire staff - from the PAs/Administrative to the nursing staff to Dr.Durso - are the perfect fit for us. Since our first consultation in December 2018, there has been only 1 appointment I can recall where there was a hiccup. There was a scheduling error and our appointment that we scheduled by phone didn’t make it into the system. It was a very busy time and we fault no one for this...especially with how it was handled. When we showed up, the person who we scheduled with said she didn’t see it in the system but she remembered talking with me about it and immediately apologized and asked me to wait a moment. She went to the back to let them know what happened and Dr. Durso herself came out and said she had back to back appointments but she’d still meet with us if we didn’t mind waiting. We waited and she saw us and answered all questions even past closing. TWO THUMBS UP for service!
Describe Nancy Durso's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
We have not yet undergone our first IVF round but I did ask if we would be able to transfer two embryos. Dr. Durso highly recommends only transferring one because it will ultimately be safer for mom and baby.

[Dr. Rebecca Chason] was very attentive to adjust my meds and I did not have OHSS...We transferred 1 fresh 5 day blastocyst which worked. Although we ended up miscarrying at 15 weeks due to a rare genetic disorder...called to check on us after our miscarriage...gave us all the options going forward...always treated us with respect and felt like our concerns were always valid.
[Nurse at Shady Grove Fertility] has been so supportive through this whole journey. We called her the day before we were following up with our OB post D&C and asked if we could stop by the clinic just to talk. She was so welcoming that day and gave us so much hope moving forward...All of the staff from receptionist , check out staff, lab and US techs are so compassionate. I've always felt comfortable and welcome.
How was your experience with Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Chason has always treated us with respect and felt like our concerns were always valid. For example our recent miscarriage at 15 weeks resulted from a genetic disorder. She gave us all the options going forward. Dr. Chason called us before our telehealth visit to order labs for us ahead of time.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility?
Ask all the questions whether or not you think it's silly. Dr Chason will always answer it to the best of her ability.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Chason has been so amazing being upfront with us and explaining everything. Since we are in the medical field she talks in medical terms so we can understand. She called us on her vacation to check on us after our egg retrieval. She also called to check on us after our miscarriage.
Describe the protocols Rebecca Chason used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
IUI we used clomid for 3 cycles and switched to Letrozole with HCG trigger shot. She thought based off of my age and diagnosis we would have success. We ended up not havimg success so we started IVF. For IVF Dr. Chason chose an agonist protocol with Gonal-F and Menopur. She decided on a dual trigger Lupron and HCG to try and avoid OHSS due to my small weight/ follicles. She was very attentive to adjust my meds and I did not have OHSS. On egg retrieval day we had 15 eggs, 9 were mature, and we ended up with 5 embryos. We transferred 1 fresh 5 day blastocyst which worked. Although we ended up miscarrying at 15 weeks due to a rare genetic disorder. We did not PGS test due to our ages. I am 30 and my husband is 33.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Jennifer Levy)
Jen is amazing! She has been so supportive through this whole journey. We called her the day before we were following up with our OB post D&C and asked if we could stop by the clinic just to talk. She was so welcoming that day and gave us so much hope moving forward.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
All of the staff from receptionist , check out staff, lab and US techs are so compassionate. I've always felt comfortable and welcome. I can't note any negatives. They were also on top of protocol to protect our safety during Covid-19! Social distancing with other patients, hand sanitizer and wiping off pens.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Rebecca Chason at Shady Grove Fertility.
We had to pay for some of our medications. Most of our appointments had a copay. We had to pay for embryo freezing and will need to come out of pocket for PGS testing of our frozen embryos.
Describe Rebecca Chason's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
My Dr prefers eSET. We never discussed transferring more than one based off of my age.

Dr. Reh is very professional and sensitive to how emotionally fraught infertility treatment can be. She always treated us and our decisions with respect...I also appreciate that from the beginning she emphasized that my behavior or diet or supplement regimen was not contributing to my infertility. I was confident that she was trying the treatment that had the highest odds of success.
I think the [SGF] clinic’s strength is the shared risk program and the convenience of early morning monitoring which minimizes the interruption to your professional life. The biggest weakness would be the minimal contact with your doctor during the treatment cycle and discouraging of direct correspondence with your doctor...eSET is preferred but two embryos transferred due to multiple failed cycles.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh is very professional and sensitive to how emotionally fraught infertility treatment can be. She always treated us and our decisions with respect. She was understanding when we initially sought treatment at another clinic for financial reasons and also understood that finances affected other decisions like opting out of PGT-A testing. I also appreciate that from the beginning she emphasized that my behavior or diet or supplement regimen was not contributing to my infertility. I was confident that she was trying the treatment that had the highest odds of success.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Don’t expect to be able to reach her directly. I have heard that other doctors in the practice are more accessible. She would call to give important results but otherwise all communication is through her nurse.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
I appreciate that she expressed sincere sympathy with my failed cycles and I never felt like she forgot my treatment history when we spoke. Her tone always reflected the reality of the situation - that she was trying different protocols in hopes that it would make a difference but that I was a unique case that didn’t fit basic expected outcomes.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Lupron stop protocol yielded 1 abnormal embryo, antagonist with estrogen patch protocol yielded 1 embryo and miscarriage, micro lupron flare yielded 2 embryos and miscarriage. The goal with each was to increase my low number of mature eggs but changes in protocol did not yield a different outcome, despite trying different trigger times/types.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Ashley)
Ashley was very responsive on the portal which I really appreciated. I was often at work where I had little privacy so I appreciated that I could discreetly get the information I needed in a timely way. I always felt like she was in my corner.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
22,500 for shared risk plus cost of medication
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
eSET is preferred but two embryos transferred due to multiple failed cycles.

Dr. Widra was always pleasant, kind and compassionate, and every appointment I had with him felt judgement-free...I am a single mother by choice. My fertility numbers were good enough to start with an unmedicated IUI...I had one IUI that didn't take...I have since changed course because of my desire to have multiple children so I will be undergoing egg freezing...[he] immediately set a new protocol in action to determine the best course of action for my changed goals
I am a single mother by choice. this is an important detail because I felt accepted at my clinic [Shady Grove Fertility] and did not feel any judgement about my choices...I think the online portal can be a bit frustrating to navigate...I was assigned to a clinical care team. Initially I was assigned one nurse, the the clinic I'm at changed that to assign patients to a few nurses per patient. I communicate with the nurses mainly through an online portal, but can schedule a call with one of them if needed
How was your experience with Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Widra was always pleasant, kind and compassionate, and every appointment I had with him felt judgement-free. I felt like Dr. Widra cared about my well-being and truly wanted to help me reach my fertility goals. I communicate in a very matter-of-fact fashion, and Dr. Widra was able to take my fertility vision and put it into a medical protocol that made sense to me and was appropriate for me.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility?
Just be yourself and be honest with your goals.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Widra always treated me with respect and kindness, and showed genuine interest in helping me achieve my fertility goals. Dr. Widra clearly understood my requests and communicated clearly and logically about my treatment protocol.
Describe the protocols Eric Widra used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I am a single mother by choice. My fertility numbers were good enough to start with an unmedicated IUI, so that's what we did. I had one IUI that didn't take (not uncommon). I have since changed course because of my desire to have multiple children so I will be undergoing egg freezing. Dr. Widra was very open to this and immediately set a new protocol in action to determine the best course of action for my changed goals.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Shady Grove Fertility.
I was assigned to a clinical care team. Initially I was assigned one nurse, the the clinic I'm at changed that to assign patients to a few nurses per patient. I communicate with the nurses mainly through an online portal, but can schedule a call with one of them if needed.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I am a single mother by choice. this is an important detail because I felt accepted at my clinic and did not feel any judgement about my choices. I got linked up with a support group for other single mothers by choice, which has been super helpful and supportive. I think the online portal can be a bit frustrating to navigate. It's nice to talk to a human every now and again, so that is something that can be a bit of a pain, but not a big deal. Overall, I am happy with my clinic. I went to another clinic before this one, and the doctor I saw had unpleasant bedside manner, and I felt like I was being judged by her. So I was very pleased to find my current clinic, which basically had open arms towards me and my fertility goals.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eric Widra at Shady Grove Fertility.
My insurance covered a lot of it, so fortunately I haven't paid a whole lot. I've only gotten one IUI done thus far though, so my costs will increase as I have more fertility treatments.
