Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Reh is friendly and to the point. She does not dilly dally. She provided optimism in my fertility journey...I underwent 3 cycles of IUI. First with clomid, the following 2 cycles were w/ letrozole. I also used vaginal progesterone and estrogen. The 1st 2 cycles failed. Then prior to initiating a 3rd cycle, my thyroid studies were abnormal so I was referred to an endocrinologist and started on levothyroxine. My 3rd IUI was successful...
For me, the hours of operation [at Shady Grove Fertility] are important. I was able to undergo fertility treatments without missing any days of work. The flexible hours and minimal/or no wait times are huge bonuses to a successful medical practice...The nursing staff was excellent, communicated well and in a timely manor. The nurses are definitely the glue that keeps this practice running as efficiently as it does...$1800 for each IUI cycle and everything done within that cycle (ultrasounds, blood work).

Then prior to initiating a 3rd cycle, my thyroid studies were abnormal so I was referred to an endocrinologist and started on levothyroxine. My 3rd IUI was successful. I am now 8 weeks pregnant and hopeful this will be a successful pregnancy.

$1800 for each IUI cycle and everything done within that cycle (ultrasounds, blood work). I had to pay out of pocket for medications/whatever my insurance didn't cover. Seemed like reasonable pricing.

The protocol [from Dr. Andrea Reh] was perfect for me. I had no side effects and was happy with the results...I became very close with DR. Reh. She was very supportive throughout the whole process...I am 38 years old...I had been thinking about egg freezing for about a year and had a lot of doubts about the whole process...She sat with me and explained the process, my initial test results as well as the options I had. The protocol she created for me worked perfectly. I did not have any side effects from the medication and was able to get more eggs than the initial estimate from my pre-evaluation exam. I went through two cycles and both times Dr Reh performed a painless egg retrieval. I was fully recovered next day. She was very supportive duri
The protocol [at Shady Grove Fertility] was perfect for me. I had no side effects and was happy with the results...Christina [nurse] is amazing! I never had to wait for more than 30 minute to hear back from her( and I had a lot of questions). She is super supportive, helpful, professional and resourceful!... The waiting times were short and I got to know front desk staff and nurses who took my blood very well! Scheduling appointments was easy. Everyone was very helpful, professional and went out of the way to accommodate me.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I felt that we had her full attention when meeting with her and she listened to and answered all of our questions.... While I have not yet officially gone through IVF, I have just started my cycle and Dr Reh has been so helpful in clearly answering all of our questions. What I like about Dr. Reh is she's real: this may not work, and we were able to have a candid conversation about that.... The nurses are the best part of Shady Grove (and that's important - that's who you'll be communicating with most often!)
The Arlington office is a serene, quiet space. It was not over-crowded in the waiting room, and the staff made sure we were comfortable. Nothing to report so far on weaknesses - we sometimes had to wait 10-15 mins for our appt to start, but that's true of every clinic!... The nurses are the best part of Shady Grove (and that's important - that's who you'll be communicating with most often!) They are very responsive, answering all of my questions/concerns via messaging in the patient portal.

Dr Reh is smart, honest, and compassionate. It was always a great experience, even when the results were not what was desired. She was always prompt. When we got bad news and she was unable to reach us, she took the time to squeeze in a 10 minute call between appointments to quickly address next steps...delivers information delicately yet honestly.
Shady Grove is outstanding - everyone I encountered was great in the clinical care team. They are organized, punctual, accommodating, and have great customer service. The only con is their financial team - none of them seem that knowledgeable, helpful, or compassionate. They definitely need to be more organized, communicative, and friendly.

Truthfully Dr Reh was very respectful and I do think she knew us and remembered us. It was a weird time where we met virtually or with masks so also hard to say if we’d know each other elsewhere. I often felt like a number in the waiting room though. I’d see so many women going in and out...She listened to our concerns and didn’t push us into things we weren’t ready for. She was realistic with us and told us what to expect. I would see her again but hopefully I won’t need to.
The [Shady Grove Fertility] front desk staff was great as were the techs that drew blood. Front desk always knew my name...I spoke to our nurse often as she’d call with results. She listened when I was caught off guard about prices for medicines one time and started crying. She listened and talked through how to try different pharmacies for different prices.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
I thought Dr Reh was helpful when we spoke to her and answered our questions. She listened to our concerns and didn’t push us into things we weren’t ready for. She was realistic with us and told us what to expect. I would see her again but hopefully I won’t need to.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
To go see her and listen to her advice.

I didn’t love seeing how many women were waiting. It was stressful even though we were all in the same boat. The front desk staff was great as were the techs that drew blood. Front desk always knew my name even though I was in a mask.

It was never really clear. I felt like I’d check out and be told we owed. Since I paid then they never sent bills.

She [Dr. Anitha Nair] was indifferent about my options. She present the risk of each procedure but didn't' seem to have a strong opinion on what option would get me my baby. She would do whatever I wanted which is great to a point.... She is nice and all but she doesn't seem to out of the box to try something new or give you an example of what worked for her other patients that might work for your situation. Do your homework and come with questions.
The clinic [Shady Grove-Arlington] is nice, clean, and equipment is new. The facility is nice, I don't have any issues with scheduling an appointment. I like how the clinic is near a metro which was great because it was on my way to work.... Overall the nurses were attentive and nice.... After my IVF fail, I realized I wasn't on the most aggressive protocol which I thought she would put me on after my failed medicated IUI. Again, you are your own advocated.

Just proceed with caution. She is nice and all but she doesn't seem to out of the box to try something new or give you an example of what worked for her other patients that might work for your situation. Do your homework and come with questions..

Everything had a cost to it... so expect at that.
Describe Anitha Nair's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
My main doctor only wanted to transfer 2 but the actually doctor doing the transfer did 3 which I agreed to since they quality fo the embryos weren't great If I didn't transfer the third one , it would most likely died.

[Dr. Andrea Reh] did not review my records before the appointments, and it felt like she does not remember any information pertaining to my previous treatment under her supervision...I wanted to see a different provider in Shady Grove Fertility, but it would have added two more months of waiting...During 6 months of treatment, I saw her only three times (initial consult, one monitoring ultrasound, and follow-up consult). The rest of the communication with Dr. was done through the nurse.
I really liked that SGF has multiple locations and early morning monitoring appointments which provided great flexibility. Scheduling is very easy. They are quick in responding to most of the questions via the patient portal. All communication on your treatment is done through the nurse...During 6 months of treatment, I saw [Dr. Reh] only three times (initial consult, one monitoring ultrasound, and follow-up consult).
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
I wanted to see a different provider in Shady Grove Fertility, but it would have added two more months of waiting for my initial consult so I agreed to proceed with Dr. Reh. During 6 months of treatment, I saw her only three times (initial consult, one monitoring ultrasound, and follow-up consult). The rest of the communication with Dr. was done through the nurse. I did not feel I got sufficient explanations of why specific treatment was chosen based on my situation (e.g. natural vs. medicated IUI, choice of specific protocol). I felt part of the problem was that she did not review my records before the appointment, so she did to have any specific suggestions on my treatment during our conversations. I was receiving written recommendations on my treatment only after my appointment with Dr. Reh which made it more difficult to ask questions. She also did not seem caring.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Try to do your own research on possible treatments and make a list of questions that you may have about it before the appointments.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
I did not feel any personal attitude from Dr. Reh's side. She did not review my records before the appointments, and it felt like she does not remember any information pertaining to my previous treatment under her supervision.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I did two IUIs using clomid, ovidrel and progesteron. I did not receive any rationale for why these medications were chosen for my cycle. I tolerated them well, and my response was also good, but both cycles failed.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
I really liked that SGF has multiple locations and early morning monitoring appointments which provided great flexibility. Scheduling is very easy. They are quick in responding to most of the questions via the patient portal. All communication on your treatment is done through the nurse. She has been indeed wonderful, but I would have hoped to be able to ask Dr. questions directly and receive some explanations from her as well. I felt disappointed that IUIs (and most of the monitoring) are performed by nurces. The billing was not always consistent (I was billed in different ways for absolutely identical encounters.)
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
Costs through our insurance: Initial consult $200 First IUI cycle $1200 Second IUI cycle $800 (had fewer monitoring appointments), plus meds.
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.

Dr. Malik was very comforting to talk to and very relatable. She would always explain anything I required further explanation for. When I would be worried about outcomes and have high anxiety, she would understand where I am coming from and help me understand the likely outcomes. Me and my husband were completely committed to continue trying until we had our baby and now currently pregnant with twins.
Shady Grove is a large practice which means more locations and options for treatment. I didn't have to drive far to get my check ups which was very convenient. Also, billing was organized since they are a large practice which made it easy for me to pay my bills...I had 2 different nurses during my last treatment cycle because the first nurse had left the practice. Even though I was in the middle of treatment, no one dropped the ball. I was assigned to the new nurse and she was aware of my protocol and everything went smoothly.
How was your experience with Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Going through fertility treatments is hard and I was hoping we would have our first baby on the first try. We did get pregnant from our IUI but miscarried. Dr. Malik advised me on doing IVF FETs as I was already 38 when I first met her. We did 2 rounds of embryo preservation and I am so grateful for that advise. We have a 2.5 year old toddler and are currently pregnant with twins from our FET procedures. I am grateful for having all my options explained to me so we could make the best decision for our growing family.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Just have patience, it takes a while to understand the long process of trying to get to the point of being pregnant. Also, don't give up hope. It's a numbers game and you have to keep trying until your successful with a baby.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?

Our FET treatments included doing progesterone shots, estrogen pills, lovonox blood thinner shots and prenatal vitamins and maintaining my thyroid at a .2 tsh level. I have PCOS and hypothyroid.

They had monitoring hours and the appts were in the mornings and very easy for me to get to. They worked with my schedule.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility.
We had fertility benefits from our health insurance so I am not sure of the costs.
Describe Shruti Malik's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
I believe it is SGF policy to only do eSET due to risk to me as an advanced maternal aged woman.

How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
To say Dr. Reh is a wonderful provider would be an understatement. She is outstanding and provided a warm and successful experience from beginning to end. Because of Dr. Reh, we now have a beautiful daughter. All credit goes to her and her team. From our very first visit with Dr. Reh, my husband and I knew we could trust her. She directed us to begin our journey with medicated/timed cycles. We tried four cycles of Letrozole. After that treatment did not result in pregnancy, we moved to IVF. Dr. Reh explained thoroughly explained the IVF process and our individualized odds of success. We were incredibly confident in her treatment plan. We underwent one egg retrieval cycle which resulted in three PGT-normal embryos. I let my body rest for a few months after the egg retrieval and transferred one embryo, which resulted in a success pregnancy and birth. Dr. Reh personally called me the morning of the egg retrieval to wish me luck and was present for my "graduation" appointment at Shady Grove before I moved to my OBGYN. She was also my provider for several of my monitoring appointments. If I choose to move forward with a second embryo transfer, I will make sure Dr. Reh is my provider. She is outstanding and the absolute best Shady Grove has to offer.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Shady Grove is a large institution and you may not always see Dr. Reh at your appointments. Trust the process. She is still overseeing your treatment and is always available via her staff.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh, her staff and the entire Shady Grove team truly "saw" me. They understood my concerns and goals. I never felt like they were too busy to answer my questions.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I do not ovulate regularly, so I started with Letrozole and medicated/timed cycles. I completed four cycles of varying dosages. While I did ovulate each time, I did not become pregnant. When I moved to IVF, I used an antagonist protocol (Gonal, Menopur and Cetrotide) for my stimulation cycle. I produced 22 eggs. ICSI was used resulting in three PGT-normal embryos. One embryo was transferred which then gave us a successful pregnancy and a healthy baby girl.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Brittany Lessik, RN)
Brittany was absolutely fantastic in every way! Brittany was extremely responsive and communicative. She quickly answered all of my questions about protocols and prescriptions. However, she was also incredibly sympathetic. She was compassionate during the difficult times and celebrated our wins! Brittany is a tremendous asset to Shady Grove. I feel very very lucky to have had her as my Fertility Care Coordinator.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
The volume at Shady Grove is very high. Many many patients walk through the doors, but don't let that deter you. The staff is very professional and patients are never just "numbers". I utilized the Arlington office for 90% of my appointments, but they do not perform monitoring over the weekends. I was appreciative the Fairfax office accommodated Saturday and Sunday appointments.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
We took advantage of the Shared Risk program. Treatment and medications totaled $30,000.

Dr. Malik was an amazing listener and really cared about our results. I saw several NP's for my bloodwork/ultrasound appointments but she was checking in and I knew always reviewing my results. She performed the actual implantation procedure and was always patient to answer my questions...I usually heard from the same nurse on her team which was so helpful for dosage/bloodwork instructions...She spent a super long time getting to know us in my first consult and always took time to answer all of my questions...
Shady Grove Arlington was by far a better experience than Shady Grove Fairfax. The first doctor I had there (older guy) had a terrible bedside manner and didn't explain anything to me. Didn't even ask me very many questions about our history or situation. Dr. Malik and the team at Arlington was a godsend. Even the blood techs were way better! Shoutout to Carmen who ALWAYS found my vein. Fairfax had a few amateurs who took two and three jabs...

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Trust her and her team, it seems so overwhelming but you're in good hands and they always give bite sized information to take it day by day.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Malik was SO MUCH BETTER than the first doctor I saw. She spent a super long time getting to know us in my first consult and always took time to answer all of my questions. She and her staff were wonderful, I usually heard from the same nurse on her team which was so helpful for dosage/bloodwork instructions. She was warm and I would 1000% recommend her to friends (already have)!
Describe the protocols Shruti Malik used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
We first tried an IUI since we're relatively young and healthy and have unexplained infertility. Rather than continue to try IUI's, we opted to try IVF as insurance didn't pay for any of it, we wanted to put the money towards the better option (percentage of success wise). We did one cycle of IVF, and our first fresh transfer was a success. We are so grateful!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Brittany)
Brittany was my main point of contact at Shady Grove and would call me every afternoon to give me the results of that mornings tests and explain next steps. She was super patience explaining the dosage of the meds, and there were others who walked me through the meds in person multiple times because I was so intimidated by mixing and shooting. But the whole team was always supportive and wonderful.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Shady Grove Fertility.
Mornings were always busy to be expected, wished they had some later options but it is what it is.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shruti Malik at Shady Grove Fertility.
The cost of the actual IVF were laid out clearly, one thing that wasn't were the meds. We had nothing covered by insurance so while it was estimated we'd pay 5K for meds, it was more like 8K because of increased dosage and refills. Good to know- just over estimate if you're paying out of pocket.
Describe Shruti Malik's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Dr. Malik strongly recommended we only try one embryo for now since it was our first try, and she was right- it stuck! Grateful to be pregnant with one :)

Dr Rey took time to understand my lengthy and complicated journey to pursue IVF treatment. She acknowledged how difficult it was and was kind but clear about her approach...We decided that for my next embryo transfer we would try an unmedicated cycle before transfer since I had been able to get pregnant previously...The natural cycle worked better and my uterine lining got thicker than the previous cycle – my embryo transfer went smoothly and I'm now 9 weeks pregnant....
[at Shady Grove Fertility] Lots of locations, caring staff, considerate team members. Only negative I experienced was that sometimes the AM monitoring staff at Arlington seemed grumpy – perhaps they were understaffed but they were not as friendly as nurse staff at other Shady Grove locations...My primary nurse communicated clearly and was my liaison with Dr Rey. She showed care and a clear understanding of my particular fertility case...
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Rey was wonderful, she connected with me at important moments, made sure I had time and space to ask questions, and she always made me feel like she was familiar with the details of my fertility journey.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
She has a very calm demeanor but don't take that as a lack of enthusiasm or investment in helping you have a baby.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Rey took time to understand my lengthy and complicated journey to pursue IVF treatment. She acknowledged how difficult it was and was kind but clear about her approach.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
Started with a standard egg retrieval process with injectable medications. Resulted in 3 day-5 embryos, which were then biopsied for PGT A & PGT M. Only 1 embryo was cleared for transfer. I was hoping for more than 1 viable embryo so Dr Rey counseled me on options and we decided to do a 2nd round of egg retrieval – she upped my medication levels this time, resulting in 6 or 7 embryos that were then sent for genetic testing. Of those, we got 4 viable embryos! Once we had 5 embryos we decided to move forward with a medicated frozen embryo transfer. During the medication lead up to the transfer my uterine lining was not thickening up to an ideal number – I discussed with Dr Rey and since my lining was naturally thin, I opted to move forward with the embryo transfer. I got a positive pregnancy test but had a miscarriage at week 6. I was pretty devastated and doubting myself – thinking I had done something wrong. When talking to Dr. Rey she was honest with me that even she was a bit surprised that I miscarried with a genetically viable embryo, but she explained that PGT testing isn't 100% guaranteed due to what cells are tested in the blastocyst stage. We decided that for my next embryo transfer we would try an unmedicated cycle before transfer since I had been able to get pregnant previously. (I pursued IVF because I had to terminate two wanted pregnancies due to fatal genetic issues, my husband and I are carriers of the same genetic disease) The natural cycle worked better and my uterine lining got thicker than the previous cycle – my embryo transfer went smoothly and I'm now 9 weeks pregnant.

My primary nurse communicated clearly and was my liaison with Dr Rey. She showed care and a clear understanding of my particular fertility case.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
My fertility care was covered by my employer so I had minimal exposure to costs. I will say that Shady Grove offered financial consultations and plans.
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
Dr Rey explained that they typically transfer a single embryo because of the risks associated with twins, especially for someone at my age (37). She also recommended 1 embryo since I had been able to get pregnant naturally in the past and my focus in IVF was pre-implantation genetic testing.

How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
I could not have asked for a better doctor. Fertility treatment is always challenging, but Dr. Reh made the process easier. She was extremely patient and excellent at making sure to address all of our concerns.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Follow the process and be patient because fertility treatment takes time (after all, one cycle is a minimum of 28 days).
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
She clearly understood emotions were involved in our decision making process. She was patient as we took our time to decide next steps, changed our minds and was very reassuring with all of our concerns..
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
She increased our letrizole dosage to help increase chances for pregnancy by having multiple eggs produced at once. She was always careful not to over stimulate. We also tried chlomid upon our own request and desire to try other ovulation stimulating medication. And finally she was a pro at our IVF. She carefully adjusted the medication for optimal results (maximizing the number of developed eggs at the same time) and we had resounding success.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Tammy, Brittany, Rachel)
The nurses were extremely responsive to questions about the treatment. They not only provided detailed answers that were easy to follow, but they were very quick to respond.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
It takes a while to enter the system in terms of registering and initial testing. But once you get to your first treatment, the place runs like a well oiled machine. Communication through the portal is extremely efficient and the pharmacy recommendations are phenomenal. Appointments are easy to schedule.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
My insurance only covered initial diagnostic treatment. The fertility treatment itself was out-of-pocket, though the clinic did give information on financial resources if needed.
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
We did PGT-A testing and therefore only did a single embryo transfer.

Dr. Reh was able to personalize her approach to help get me pregnant. She reviewed the results each month and adjusted medications as needed. She was friendly and knowledgeable and I felt confident in trusting her opinion...Each month the amount of letrozole that I took increased slightly to help with my egg development and it adjusted at that level to ensure that the chance of multiples were reduced...
Lana [coordinator at Shady Grove Fertility] was very friendly and always prompt to respond to any questions. She was the only coordinator that I had through my journey and I was fortunate that I always had a direct contact for my concerns...My only negative comment is that I have had an employee claim that I needed to pay a large sum before leaving my appointment and after I spoke to the finance department learned that she was incorrect. Otherwise, I never had an issue...
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh was able to personalize her approach to help get me pregnant. She reviewed the results each month and adjusted medications as needed. She was friendly and knowledgeable and I felt confident in trusting her opinion. I had a great experience with her and I have recommended her to others struggling with fertility.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh has years of experience helping others get pregnant. She knows how to guide her patients to a healthy, safe pregnancy. I personally have recommended her to friends/colleagues and encourage prospective patients to meet with her as well.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh reviewed all of my information even if she was not able to see me at each visit. She updated treatment each month, as needed, and personalized her approach to help get me pregnant. She was kind and knowledgeable while being straight forward with the process and information.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
I took letrozole to induce ovulation because I do not a regular cycle (due to PCOS). I also took a trigger shot each month followed by progesterone pills. I completed this process for 4 months before getting pregnant. Each month the amount of letrozole that I took increased slightly to help with my egg development and it adjusted at that level to ensure that the chance of multiples were reduced.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Lana)
Lana was very friendly and always prompt to respond to any questions. She was the only coordinator that I had through my journey and I was fortunate that I always had a direct contact for my concerns. 100% recommend!
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Overall, the people at the clinic are very friendly. My only negative comment is that I have had an employee claim that I needed to pay a large sum before leaving my appointment and after I spoke to the finance department learned that she was incorrect. Otherwise, I never had an issue.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
Same day lab work cost about $50-$75 with insurance per cycle. My medications (letrozole/trigger shot) were about $75-$100 per cycle with insurance. I also had a co-payment of $35 for visits.

Dr. Reh took the time to call us when we didn't have an appointment and discuss our questions at no additional charge...Dr. Reh recommended an ERA prior to transfer...That ERA showed that we needed 11 hours less progesterone and we made that adjustment for the frozen embryo transfer...she is busy and she may not see you personally at each appointment. That does not mean that she isn't checking your records and communicating with the staff....
Lana was our nurse [at Shady Grove Fertility] and we could not possibly say enough wonderful things about her. I received portal messages consistently within hours of messaging. She would call if she thought my question was better answered by talking - even if no actual information needed to be imparted, just reassurance...Financial counselors are assigned to specific physicians, so when selecting a doctor at Shady Grove, you should also ask about their nursing and financial staff because those are the people that will affect your experience 80% of the time.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
We did not see Dr. Reh personally many times. I met her in person twice - once for a saline sonogram and once for our final ultrasound. However, we had a virtual consult and several phone calls to discuss our options and treatment plan. I know some might have a problem with not seeing their doctor personally for every appointment, but I never felt like there was any lost information or miscommunication. Her treatment plan as described was being carried out every time.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Be able to discuss your history in detail during the consult. She had not reviewed my records in detail, but once I explained our background in about 10 minutes of our 60 minute consult, she was able to talk to us about our previous cycles. Just understand that she is busy and she may not see you personally at each appointment. That does not mean that she isn't checking your records and communicating with the staff.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh took the time to call us when we didn't have an appointment and discuss our questions at no additional charge. Although we had additional embryos for use at another location (which we couldn't access due to COVID), she said she was going to treat us like we only had one. She recommended an ERA - something our previous clinic didn't advise, but we were interested in.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
We came to Dr. Reh's office following treatment at 2 other clinics. We left the first clinic due to a move and the second clinic shut down because of a lab accident. We had one Day 6 tested embryo available to us to use for a frozen transfer. Dr. Reh recommended an ERA prior to transfer, which our previous clinic did not support until at least two failed transfers. That ERA showed that we needed 11 hours less progesterone and we made that adjustment for the frozen embryo transfer. I obviously do not know what would have happened had we not done that ERA, but our first transfer was successful and we are currently pregnant with identical twins. We are certainly very satisfied with the outcome.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Lana Truong)
Lana was our nurse and we could not possibly say enough wonderful things about her. I received portal messages consistently within hours of messaging. She would call if she thought my question was better answered by talking - even if no actual information needed to be imparted, just reassurance. She always remembered how we prefer communication depending on the day. The most important thing she did was adjust our Frozen Embryo Transfer on the fly. We had a thyroid test come back too high, and I was uncomfortable with proceeding with transfer assuming that a medication adjustment would make it alright to transfer in time. She changed everything within 15 minutes of our baseline appointment and set up a new transfer in 20 minutes with minimal delay to our transfer and no cancellation or change charges to us. Our experience with Lana is the biggest reason that we continue to recommend Shady Grove to friends seeking fertility care.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
Our financial coordinator Melissa was also a critical part of our positive experience at Shady Grove. Melissa actually worked with our insurance company directly and ensured that we did not pay one cent outside the global fee for the transfer - and we have a very frustrating insurance provider. We never waited more than a few hours for a response and she often replied to me after business hours. Shady Grove has multiple clinics across the country. I would say that a weakness is that you can never guarantee you will have your personal reproductive endocrinologist at any given appointment, including egg retrievals or transfers if that matters to you. That means that you really have to be comfortable seeing many different people. While we didn't experience this personally, there are too many people who struggle with their financial counselors and it seems like systemic failing in their system overall. Financial counselors are assigned to specific physicians, so when selecting a doctor at Shady Grove, you should also ask about their nursing and financial staff because those are the people that will affect your experience 80% of the time.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
We paid for the Global Frozen Embryo Transfer Fee with the Military Discount. It was $3910 and insurance covered all medications. That was the only thing we paid. Our financial counselor let us know that Shady Grove was raising their prices in a few days and advised us to pay early, which saved us several hundred dollars.
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
We did not have multiple embryos to transfer, so this was not an option for us.

[Dr. Reh is] Friendly, professional, and extremely well-informed, she consistently took time to thoroughly answer our questions about what to expect throughout the process and encouraged us through some disappointing steps...We planned for 3 IUI attempts over 3 months, each with increasing levels of medication if they didn't work, before we would move to IVF.
They [Shady Grove Fertility] seem to offer a lot of options for getting timely treatment in terms of doctors and locations. There doctors seem well informed and generally proficient. But there was a lot of inconsistency between offices, which resulted in a lot of miscommunication about the details of medical history and next steps...There were also some miscommunications with our insurance company regarding genetic testing and follow-up.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh was the best part of our experience with Shady Grove. Friendly, professional, and extremely well-informed, she consistently took time to thoroughly answer our questions about what to expect throughout the process and encouraged us through some disappointing steps. Fortunately, we are now pregnant with two babies. Navigating all the steps can be challenging, but absolutely worth it.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Ask lots of questions and take notes that you can refer to when following up with other doctors and staff to ensure nothing gets lost in translation.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
She was always very friendly, well-informed and very informative, but sometimes that didn't always percolate down to the staff level at the Arlington office, though other office locations were seemed to be better briefed.
Describe the protocols Andrea Reh used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.
She had us take all the relevant tests, starting with the female, then the male. Once she determined that we had unexplained infertility, she proceeded with genetic testing. We planned for 3 IUI attempts over 3 months, each with increasing levels of medication if they didn't work, before we would move to IVF. The first IUI was unsuccessful. Prior to the second attempt, I was prescribed Letrozole. Following the second attempt, I become pregnant with fraternal twins.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility.
The original one was relatively well intentioned, but didn't communicate thoroughly or consistently with what we discussed with the doctor. She also miscommunicated about a chemical pregnancy, indicating that it was a normal pregnancy without confirmation. There were also some miscommunications with our insurance company regarding genetic testing and follow-up.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility.
They seem to offer a lot of options for getting timely treatment in terms of doctors and locations. There doctors seem well informed and generally proficient. But there was a lot of inconsistency between offices, which resulted in a lot of miscommunication about the details of medical history and next steps. Arlington had the biggest challenges, but the other offices were much better. Once we switched to the Fairfax Office, the communication improved and the process went much more smoothly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
Insurance covered most of the steps until IUI, which was $1800 per round, which we paid out of pocket. We also had to pay for a genetic testing out of pocket that wasn't covered by my husband's insurance, which was $350 (I believe through a discount program)

What specific things went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility?
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility.
Mostly when coordinating with the Arlington office, the nurse/staff either did have accurate information from the doctor, did not communicate accurate information to us or other offices or didn't follow-through on next steps without prompting. The Fairfax office was generally more reliable, but there was still some inconsistency with all the shuffling between locations, doctors and staff.

I was 33 at the time of my egg retrieval [with Dr. Reh], and had a good retrieval that resulted in 8 PGS normal embryos. The hardest part for me was preparing my lining. Dr. Reh tried multiple different protocols, including estrogen priming and a natural cycle. Dr. Reh also recommended a series hysteroscopies with a surgeon outside of SGF. That turned out to be a really excellent recommendation - I was able to get pregnant after that.
SGF is a very large clinic, which comes with advantages and disadvantages. One of the advantages I experienced was my doctor presenting my case to her colleagues to get additional feedback. She came back with other recommendations for us to consider in my treatment. Of the disadvantages, the biggest one, for me, was that major procedures (retrieval and transfer) will be performed by doctors you don't know. I never had a bad experience with a doctor, but for people want their doctor for every procedure, it might not be possible.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh is a very good doctor. She showed a lot of compassion for me as I was going through treatment and hit a lot of road blocks. She was also willing to try different approaches/med protocols when the typical approach didn't work for me. She also presented my case to her colleagues to get others feedback, which I feel like shows a lot of humility and willingness to go beyond to figure out what would work for me. Even though we got pregnant without IVF, Dr. Reh and her colleagues gave me the diagnosis and connected me to a surgeon who was able to help us and is probably the reason we got pregnant.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Be prepared with questions and don't be afraid to ask about alternative approaches.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr. Reh was my doctor for about 2 years. I saw her very frequently in the Arlington office, even for lining checks and smaller check-ins. She definitely got to know me and always took time to ask me about myself. She also was very kind around giving bad news, and she gave me some good pep talks when we hit some road blocks.

The nursing staff were so excellent. I do not have enough good things to say about Ashley and the others at the Arlington office. They really made me feel like they were on my team. It was a bit bittersweet to "graduate" and say good bye.

I thought monitoring appointments were efficiently run. I frequently saw my primary doctor during these appointments. This was a benefit to the Arlington office. I also had the same nurses and techs at most appointments, so it was a comfortable experience.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
I did SGF's Shared Risk Program with PGS. It was $19,500 + $5,000 for PGS. That included up to 6 retrievals and all FETs.
Describe Andrea Reh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility.
We never discussed anything other than an eSET. I would not have wanted to transfer multiple.

Dr. Reh brings both the experience (CRITICAL to have a team with a ton of reps when undergoing fertility treatments), as well as a straightforward, pragmatic approach to working with her patients. She took the time to fully explain our options and the data at every turn and was thoughtful and personally responsive when we had questions or things didn't go as planned. Dr. Reh supported our decision making without sugar coating nor being too hands off,
We found the Ballston office [of Shady Grove Fertility] to be ideal for frequent appointments because it was smaller and less hectic than the other offices. For weekend monitoring, we recommend K St over Fairfax for the same reasons....[cost]~$25K for risk-sharing program for IVF...We highly recommend Dr. Reh and the nursing team at the SGF Ballston office.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
We highly recommend Dr. Reh and the nursing team at the SGF Ballston office. Undiagnosed infertility and multiple miscarriages is a frustrating path. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Always reach out with questions or concerns, she's very responsive. SGF is great, because you 100% want the experience, but recognize the different teams that you have to communicate with (finance, nursing, clinical trial, genomics). Sometimes things can get confusing which leads to frustration if you don't recognize that.

IUI - 5 cycles. Low dose clomid w/ 2-3 follicle development. One of the cycles added gonal-F and had to cancel due to producing 5+ mature follicles. 2 chemical pregnancies and 2 negative tests. Final cycle was IVF with genetic testing and frozen transfer of 1 embryo. Hormone doses for egg retrieval were fairly conservative due to overreaction during IUI cycles, but unexpectedly lead to low egg retrieval (8) because one ovary did not respond. Result 2 viable embryos, successful singleton pregnancy with 1st transfer.

3 cycles with different protocols [with Dr. Reh]. The last one was able to produce successful PGS tested embryos...Many of my appts were with her rather than another team member. She treated my case as unique and answered questions thoroughly...She took my requests and ideas into consideration and I felt I could collaborate on my treatment...genuinely cared about my treatment and outcome.
She [nurse at Shady Grove Fertility] was so invested that I felt like we were going through this journey together. She was knowledgeable, communicative, personable...SGF Arlington is full of friendly staff from the front desk to the phlebotomists to the nurses and providers. SGF Fairfax is convenient but too big to feel like family. They also seemed to have higher turnover because I rarely saw the same staff members and they seemed less personal. I appreciated the convenience and weekend appts at fairfax though.
How was your experience with Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility?
Dr Reh is genuine, approachable and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her. She saw me for most of my appts and gave me clear expectations of the plan for treatment. She took my requests and ideas into consideration and I felt I could collaborate on my treatment.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Andrea Reh at Shady Grove Fertility.
Because of my age, we selected a Shared Risk IVF. I believe it initially cost $33,000 + all medication costs were paid from my pocket. Each cycle could cost up to an additional $5,000. We receive all our money back after a failed IVF process and had to pay an additional about $10,000 for the shared risk donor process.

Dr. Reh was great at addressing all my questions and took care of us during a very stressful time...My main issue was a PCOS diagnosis and the fact that I was not ovulating. Since there were no other known issues, we began with the least invasive option of medicated monitored cycles/timed intercourse. After two failed cycles, I decided to do an IUI to increase my odds...

He [Dr. Howard McClamrock] didn’t really let me explain my story or discuss what i expected. He let me know what they offered and explained in detail what each procedure was and then told me that because of my size I’m not able to get any help from them. After f getting excited about the possibility of treatment and hearing what the clinic had to offer I was let down in that same breath.
I didn’t visit the [Shady Grove Fertility - Baltimore] facility in person so I am unable to attest the the building itself. The issue I didn’t have was because it was virtual I had to upload everything to their website and it was very complicated. Not a great experience there either...Find a doctor that is more sensitive to women going through infertility if you are in any way fragile. I was broken after my experience honestly.
How was your experience with Howard McClamrock (retired) at Shady Grove Fertility?
His strength was he seemed very knowledgeable about the process. His weakness what that he should have told me before even explaining anything that i didn’t qualify. It’s like he wanted the copay money or something. They could have called and canceled me before getting my hopes up they had all my information and chose not to.

After f getting excited about the possibility of treatment and hearing what the clinic had to offer I was let down in that same breath. It was no amount of explanation that i could give to even go any further in the process. The only option i was given was to pay out of pocket to have my husbands sperm tested. Which i explained he had done previously. I was devastated and haven’t had the heart to seek further opinions or treatment since.

We never even got this far sadly.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Shady Grove Fertility.
I only had one experience with the nurses as my consult was virtual but I don’t remember her being kind or compassionate about the fact that I was ineligible for treatment at all. She just confirmed that they wouldn’t be able to treat me and when I asked about other places that could she said they wouldn’t either for reference I was interested and referred by my doctor for a tubal dye test.

I wasn’t charged for anything other than the copay and the cost of the visit. The cost of the appointment was covered by my insurance so I don’t remember the cost and the copay was 40$

There wasn’t much rationale [from Dr. Howard McClamrock]. I was just told what to do. I did 3 IUI cycles. One with clomid, one with femara, one with injectables. I requested using injectables...He is clearly well-read and knowledgeable. He is competent. He is not at all warm or personal/personable. There were several ultrasounds when he said absolutely nothing to me. I didn’t feel he was invested in my success. He made a few comments like “it’s no big deal” or “it doesn’t matter”. Those are hurtful because it matters tremendously to me. He didn’t offer any real insight into why we weren’t successful and he didn’t recommend altering our plan. If he spent 5 minutes explaining what he recommended changing and how it might improve our likelihood of success I would have continued treatments. While he may be knowledgeable, his lack of communication and interpersonal skills (and I don’t expect warm and fuzzy) was what made me leave that clinic.
The initial consult [at Shady Grove Fertility] was about $250. The labs associated with that consult were about $300. Each iui cycle was $1500...Nice facility. Convenient location. Efficient check in/check out. Had to pay $6 for parking at each visit - every lab draw or US! Weekend procedures were performed at a different office, which was annoying. And each iui was performed by a different physician...There wasn’t much rationale. I was just told what to do. I did 3 IUI cycles. One with clomid, one with femara, one with injectables. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Howard McClamrock (retired) at Shady Grove Fertility?
Do your own research first. Don’t expect explanations or reassurance. I think his approach is fine for a couple doing timed intercourse. You don’t need him - just his US results and meds. But for more complex treatments you want someone to explain things to you properly.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility.
The coordination here at first was absolutely lousy. I was totally misguided by a nurse, resulting in a month delay in treatment. I was made to feel like this was my fault. After that incident it was much better. But that initial bad communication made it a negative experience.

The initial consult was about $250. The labs associated with that consult were about $300. Each iui cycle was $1500. We used my husband’s frozen sperm so that was $500 initially plus approximately $120 per cycle to thaw it.
What specific things went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to call with results
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Canceled a cycle due to clinic error
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility.
They were disorganized. Prescriptions were called in late a few times. And I had to remind them to call. Different nurses would call with results and they were unfamiliar with what type of cycle I was on (iui vs TI) or whether or not I was using a trigger or progesterone. They would ask me for that info when I was never informed!

Gonal f and menopur, these were upped very quickly as I was not responding, but once upped I was responding fine. Started ganirelix and then did egg retrieval. Because of my progesterone level the doctor recommended a freeze all and do a frozen transfer. He called personally to tell me that only 2 embryos were made. It was later that one more embryo got made but only 1made it to 6 day blastocyst We then got ready for frozen transfer with estrogen and progesterone injections Frozen transfer did not work
