Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Rosen made us feel comfortable and confident in our decision to go to UCSF. I felt like we had enough access to him to ask questions and enough time with him to get answers that we could understand...Dr. Rosen was great. He took time to explain what was happening and to listen to and answer all questions. He was professional, down to earth, and we felt confident that we were in good hands...Trust that the process will unfold and that you are in capable hands of a Dr. that cares about the outcome and the patient's well being.

Dr. F has a decent manner, but has confused me with one of my egg donors and even changed a medication due to the confusion... My biggest issue is that he knew I had Endo [endometriosis] but waited until the 4th year of treatment to introduce a $10 pill regime... It should have been part of a much earlier course of treatment.
Anna [my nurse] was very compassionate and a wonderful communicator. If she wasn't as wonderful, I don't think I would have made it for as long as I did.
How was your experience with Victor Fujimoto at UCSF?
I feel he did ok. He was almost too passive in his communication. My biggest issue is that he knew I had Endo but waited until the 4th year of treatment to introduce a $10 pill regime that has been proven to be a near magical pill. It was the only reason I got pregnant at all. It should have been part of a much earlier course of treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victor Fujimoto at UCSF?
Clarify at the beginning and end of an appointment or email. He has a lot of patients, don't expect them to remember you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victor Fujimoto at UCSF?
Dr. F has a decent manner, but has confused me with one of my egg donors and even changed a medication due to the confusion. He continued to confuse me with her for a better part of a year even when being corrected.

She travels a lot to conferences which means she's not always as available - but that also makes her more savvy about new treatments and technologies.
If you like to see the same doctor throughout the treatment, you may have to be patient and wait until she is in town for long enough.
How was your experience with Marcelle Cedars at UCSF?
She's a great doctor with lots of experience as she is the head of the practice. She travels a lot to conferences which means she's not always as available - but that also makes her more savvy about new treatments and technologies.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marcelle Cedars at UCSF?
Schedule a face to face visit with dr Cedars to make sure you understand her treatment plan. If you like to see the same doctor throughout the treatment, you may have to be patient and wait until she is in town for long enough.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marcelle Cedars at UCSF?
Dr Cedars took the time to talk to us and explain everything to us. She seemed to care about us as individuals and really thought about personalizing the treatment, as opposed to just doing the regular protocol that is done for most women at the clinic.
Describe your experience with your nurse at UCSF. (Assigned nurse: Jill Ford)
Very organized and responded to emails very quickly which was critical to me. Especially when waiting for pregnancy test results!!!

We only saw him once, we were working with the duty doctors, but he was nice, confident, and calm... You may not see him very often, depending on if he's on duty when you go in for ultrasounds and what not, but everyone at the clinic is awesome.
Although, we've only seen Dr. Rosen once, the doctor's on duty for our appointment were great. The nurses and front desk people were all wonderful. Special shout out to our nurse who acted as a spirit guide, calling us with results, telling us next steps, etc.

The doctor took time to explain procedures and understand our desired outcomes... At one point, based on information they provided after my procedure, there was question / concern that they may have implanted the wrong (some other patient's) embryos...
While the overall desired outcome was achieved, UCSF left much to be desired from an administrative standpoint. We also had one notable mishap that created unnecessary duress related to the embryo implantation... Describe the specific things that went wrong at UCSF.
At one point, based on information they provided after my procedure, there was question / concern that they may have implanted the wrong (some other patient's) embryos. While this was cleared up swiftly, any doubt in this area is unacceptable. Billing and admin were a total disaster and I was over billed routinely / UCSF continually failed to submit to my insurance provider.

She explains everything in detail (even drawing us pictures of basic anatomy!). Her style is not overly aggressive but seems rational. Her bedside manner is excellent... She ran tests early that seemed appropriate for our situation and really informed the process, but avoided other tests that didn't seem necessary for us.
Everyone certainly seemed to care about the outcome. Response time on questions was fast and I always felt like the team was taking my situation into account... She [my nurse] always responded to our questions quickly. She was always available by phone.

Under Dr. Cedars care, I only saw her twice, in her office - the very first time and then a requested follow up meeting (for an additional $130). She was never truly my doctor as she never saw me in the examining room - EVER! ... She didn't think I was a candidate for IVF. If I could do it over again, I'd skip the IUI, and go straight to IVF. ... The exact procedure Dr. Cedars recommended for me. ... if you're over 35, don't waste your time here.

If you need "light assistance" and don't have anything "wrong" with you - then go here, i.e. get prescribe clomid, otherwise, don't waste time, and find a clinic that cares. Also, if you're over 35, don't waste your time here.

Mitch [Rosen] is an excellent doctor, caring and clinical...honest and ethical about the situation. He did not try to sell us procedures that were unlikely to be effective....Mitch recommended that he look inside my uterus. He found a "false wall" of tissue that could have been a cause, because if the embryo tried to attach, it wouldn't get enough blood. That was a good hunch, and was important for going further to IVF and Ovum Donation IVF.
UCSF and Mitch Rosen were warmly welcoming, knew us and our case well....Most doctor's fees were covered by insurance. The one shock was the hormone injection system (pen) the clinic used was twice as expensive with insurance as expensive as mixable one without insurance.

Mitch is an excellent doctor, caring and clinical...honest and ethical about the situation. He did not try to sell us procedures that were unlikely to be effective.

Be honest with yourself, and give everything you can to succeed.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Mitch Rosen at UCSF?
UCSF and Mitch Rosen were warmly welcoming, knew us and our case well. He thought thru everything I had tried and the data he saw, made recommendations for treatment that made sense to us, and helped us along our path to parenthood, even though we did not get pregnant under his care.
Describe the protocols Mitch Rosen used in your cycles at UCSF and their degree of success.
I don't recall the detail of the protocols. We had high egg counts on stimulated cycles, and concerns about multiples, but no actual pregnancies resulted. Mitch recommended that he look inside my uterus. He found a "false wall" of tissue that could have been a cause, because if the embryo tried to attach, it wouldn't get enough blood. That was a good hunch, and was important for going further to IVF and Ovum Donation IVF.

I felt Dr. Sohn was honest with me as a patient and he allowed my husband and I to make the decisions but did suggest when it was clear after a second failed IVF attempt that we should consider other options at that point. I was 43 at the time and my labs showed declining fertility. His nurse, Judi Friedman, was fantastic as well.
I felt as if Dr. Sohn, his staff and the other doctors I saw at UCSF were wonderful... [Nurse] Judi was fabulous! She always made sure I understood what they were doing and what I needed to do and I was always able to reach her when I needed to speak with her on the phone.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Paolo Rinaudo at UCSF?
I thought he was fine - not great but fine thus hard to give feedback
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Paolo Rinaudo at UCSF?
I had mixed experience at UCSF but overall it was positive and the nurses and staff were caring. There were times when I would deal with someone that was less sensitive or knowledgeable about me and my treatment and this was primarily during IUI (which was a waste of time and money). During the IVF process it was a much better experience even though the first two times resulted in a negative pregnancy test but we ended up with a healthy child so overall experience was positive.

Dr. Cakmak is caring, would definitely listen to all your concerns, upfront about the risks and expectations. He would always follow up, even on weekends, if there is an issue outstanding. I felt very well cared for and absolutely trusted his advice and recommendations.... The nurses were absolutely fantastic. Always on top of everything and super easy to reach and talk to. I always felt super comfortable speaking to them regarding my treatment.
[UCSF has] New facilities, quick appointments (rarely much wait), all the staff is super helpful and friendly. Dr. Noel is amazing. After a frustrating experience with doctors at Spring, Martha Noel was a breath of fresh air. She was patient, answered all my questions, never seemed rushed, was incredibly thorough, and she was at all my appointments. I felt completely at ease in her care...She was immediately curious about my birth experience of my first child and my failed transfers. She dug into my history
Financial department [at UCSF] is a weakness. Hard to get receipts. I found the front desk team to be very kind. The only challenge we had was trying to get receipts for reimbursement. It was much more complicated and required lots of back and forth compared to other clinics. But worth it for the doctor..
How was your experience with Martha Noel at UCSF?
I cannot express how grateful I am to Dr. Noel. After two failed transfers, I came to her with one embryo left. She was immediately curious about my birth experience of my first child and my failed transfers. She dug into my history and got curious like the doctors at Spring Fertility had not. She developed a hypothesis about what might be going on. We did an ERA test before the transfer and used those results to time the transfer. She also was very careful and detailed in setting up my protocol. I am happy to say I am 11 weeks pregnant. After my previous experience, I told the nurse it was important for me to see Dr. Noel as much as possible at my appointments. And they totally made that happen. If I ever had questions, she emailed me back right away. And Dr. Noel took her time in my appointments like other doctors had never done before. She never made me feel rushed. Overall, she's smart, detailed, empathetic, a strong communicator, just amazing. I am so happy that I switched for my last embryo!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Martha Noel at UCSF?
I don't have any. She's amazing.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Martha Noel at UCSF?
Dr. Noel is amazing. After a frustrating experience with doctors at Spring, Martha Noel was a breath of fresh air. She was patient, answered all my questions, never seemed rushed, was incredibly thorough, and she was at all my appointments. I felt completely at ease in her care.

Describe your experience with UCSF.
Financial department is a weakness. Hard to get receipts. I found the front desk team to be very kind. The only challenge we had was trying to get receipts for reimbursement. It was much more complicated and required lots of back and forth compared to other clinics. But worth it for the doctor.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Fujimoto has a preference for single embryo transfer. His goal is to help a family conceive and deliver to a healthy singleton pregnancy...[he] took his time explaining details to us if we were unclear and encouraged us to ask questions. We felt little to no pressure from him to make a specific decision...Even though we approached IVF with a sense of urgency, he was measured and took his time taking care to consider all of the facts before making a decision.
Don't be shocked UCSF is a large practice and you will see many doctors. Your doctor may not perform your procedures and you will work with many of the other doctors...It often felt difficult to get additional information over the phone regarding follow-up appointments or referrals my doctor made. Ultimately, they [nurses] were always responsive via email and phone within 48-72 hours.
How was your experience with Victor Fujimoto at UCSF?
Dr.Fujimoto was encouraging, thoughtful, and thorough. At every turn, he made sure we understood potential risks. Even though we approached IVF with a sense of urgency, he was measured and took his time taking care to consider all of the facts before making a decision. It can be frustrating when you're ready to go but hurdles keep arising, but I'm grateful for Dr. Fujimoto's measured approach as we can all move forward confident that I'll have the appropriate care in pregnancy.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victor Fujimoto at UCSF?
Take advantage of the face time you have with him. UCSF has a large practice and you'll interact with your care team more often than your doctor. Go into meetings with him informed and ready to ask any questions you may have.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victor Fujimoto at UCSF?
Dr. Fujimoto took his time explaining details to us if we were unclear and encouraged us to ask questions. We felt little to no pressure from him to make a specific decision. I appreciated that he helped us make informed decisions throughout the process. At the moment I found it frustrating but, he took his time always prioritizing my overall health and the health of any future pregnancy. He was confident, kind, and straight-forward.
Describe your experience with your nurse at UCSF. (Assigned nurse: Carolina & Teona)
It often felt difficult to get additional information over the phone regarding follow-up appointments or referrals my doctor made. Ultimately, they were always responsive via email and phone within 48-72 hours. Their communication was generally clear and easy to understand. I did have to play go-between for my care team and another doctor within the UCSF network that I was referred to. They didn't always let me know exactly what they needed from the other doctor and didn't seem to be communicating with the other doctor outside of messages sent through me.
Describe your experience with UCSF.
Don't be shocked UCSF is a large practice and you will see many doctors. Your doctor may not perform your procedures and you will work with many of the other doctors. UCSF is a center for excellence and a leader in the field.
