What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eric Levens at Shady Grove Fertility?

see him sooner than later. Don't wait to see him. He needs time to test and try different things on your body. Also take his advise.

Dr. Levens was excellent at communication and used drawings, articles, and artifacts to help convey information. he was very professional at telling me the truth and expectations of success. He always made me feel comfortable.

Describe the protocols Eric Levens used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.

I was told to lose some weight and change my diet to organic with lots of water each day. Then we did hormones 3 cycles and 2 embryo transfers. The the first time I took the hormones, my body wasn't ready for the embryo cycles so we stopped and waited till later. Then the next cycle, I was pregnant right away, but lost it after 10 weeks. we waited again for 4 months and tried again and had a successful pregnancy. Dr. Levens recommended donor eggs based on my age which I followed right away.

I wanted multiples based on my age and no other children. The doctor did not recommend it but he understood my situation. he told me how hard it was to raise multiples and I didn't believe him. I'm lucky because we can afford to have help. he might want to prepare a sheet of how much things cost to show parents and have them sign it confirming they understand the risks before they do multiple transfers.

He always makes sure to email me with every step of my treatment. He was at all my appointments. He did my mock exam, retrieve and transfer. He called me personally with the test results....l think he used the antagonist protocols. Which consisted of bc pills for 15 days.

Because l am Deaf and they [Shady Grove] always make sure that there was an ASL interpreter at every appointment....The Clinic is one of the top fertility in VA. And has so many success pregnants. They make sure not to use 2 embryos on younger women which may result in twice pregnancy....$ 10.200.00 but paid $7800 25% discount for a low-income family making less than $60000

I absolutely love Dr. Levens. He has the experience and compassion. He guided us in our decision with treatment plans and made us feel like we were his only patient. Dr Levens far exceeded our expectations....I felt like Dr. Leven's has our best interest in mind. Never felt like a number and would highly recommend him.... For the first try with IUI we did letrozole 7.5 mg which resulted in negative. We then added ovidrel with the letrozole of 7.5 which was also negative. We are now midcycle with letrozole 7.5, gonal f and ovidrel. If this results in negative we'll be moving onto IVF.

Its a very well run clinic [Shady Grove] which I really like. The only issue I've had has been with the financial team in not getting back to you or billing incorrectly. Being self pay is tough but I still felt that the financial department lacked compassion....UI treatments are $1800 before meds and I believe IVF starts at $11k.... Mary who is our assigned nurse is wonderful. Between her and Dr. Levens we feel like we're in the best hands.

Mary [nurse at Shady Grove - Annandale] became my cheerleader and friend. She was a huge comfort when things didn't go well and a wonderful clinican always advocating for me...While my Doctor and nurse never made me feel like a number, anytime I had to go to Rockville for a procedure, I felt like a number. The staff at Annandale office is amazing. They don't make you ever feel like a number, but where you go for retrievals and transfers do at times...

We would work as a team on putting a plan together.... He’s slightly quiet, but very smart and knows his stuff. Kind of a “nerdy” type, but that’s who I’d want taking care of me.... He called me personally to discuss results. I liked that. Definitely made me feel like a human.

[At SGF- Fairfax] We tried “timed intercourse” for three months with P.O. clomid. Then we went to injectables for two-three months. All were negative. So we resorted to IVF. Had retrieval with 10 eggs retrieved and fertilized with my husbands sperm (no ICSI, no PGS). Three embryos resulted. We had to freeze bc my progesterone level was too high. We transferred one that implanted, but did not grow, I had a D&C. When we could, we transferred the two remaining embryos and both implanted. I’m 32 weeks pregnant with di-di twins.

Dr levens explained each step of the process with candid success rates. During 1st pregnancy baby was diagnosed with Turners syndrome...Dr.Levens candidly counseled me on my options. He was the most thoughtful physician I've ever met. I believed he truly cared about me and my situation... He helped me understand the donor egg process, answered every email, called back with answers to all of my questions.

[Shady Grove] Very organized. A well oiled machine. Saw patients from all over the world. I came from out of state because of the shared donor/shared risk program...37k shared risk. If I didn't have a live pregnancy in six tries, I would receive my money back...Dr Levens was excellent, candid, and compassionate. He helped me understand the donor egg process, answered every email, called back with answers to all of my questions.

Be patient and continue treatment with him. Don't quit just because he doesn't sugar coat things for you. Ask as many question as you can because he is very knowledgeable but he doesn't talk much.

The first round of IVF didn't work because embryos never get to be blastocysts. He put me on a supplement to increase the egg quality. This time embryos became blastocysts but one day behind. We did the transfer in day 6, and I have twin boy and girl now.

We trusted him implicitly and never second-guessed his recommendations while also feeling like we could ask questions or have a say in the process if we desired. We also appreciated that we always knew what the next step in our treatment plan was, or when it would no longer make sense to proceed. Dr. Levens' willingness to discuss what-ifs and to speak honestly about when treatment no longer made sense helped us to feel like IVF wasn't taking over the rest of our lives. Knowing what would come next was probably the single biggest factor in keeping our stress in check throughout the process.

The Fairfax office and Shady Grove in general is a large operation. I've spoken with some friends over the years who prefer a smaller setting, but as someone who prioritizes efficiency and availability, it's been amazing to be able to get in and out before my early work start time during monitoring and to be able to schedule an appointment with ease...The nursing team is incredible! You honestly get so spoiled with the level of care and prompt communication here. Everyone we have encountered has been so friendly and took the time to get to know us. Our nurse from our first few cycles, Grace, is easily one of our favorite people ever! She was supportive during our loss, encouraging during failed cycles, and celebrated with us each time we were able to graduate with a viable pregnancy.

This advice isn't specific to being a patient of Dr. Levens, but in general communication goes both ways -- you need to let your doctor and the nursing team know when you need something so that they can help. Every time I reached out with questions I was met with responsiveness and support, which was appreciated!

Dr. Levens was always quick to reach out when something went awry or to be available when I needed to talk through my many questions. His nursing team is exceptionally responsive and knowledgable, but he would also give us a call anytime something unexpected happened, including once just to check in on a Saturday after a disappointing retrieval. I'm sure that he is like this with all of his patients, but we felt like he really wanted us to be successful and made sure we knew he was there for us.

Describe the protocols Eric Levens used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility and their degree of success.

We began with an estrogen priming protocol which produced four embryos, the first of which became our son. About a year after he was born, we proceeded with three frozen embryo transfers, none of which were successful. We later discovered a hydrosalpinx, which may or may not have been impacting those transfers. Two subsequent retrievals -- one estrogen priming and one microdose lupron only yielded one viable embryo. After surgically addressing the blocked tube, I got pregnant via a frozen embryo transfer of that final embryo.

The nursing team is incredible! You honestly get so spoiled with the level of care and prompt communication here. Everyone we have encountered has been so friendly and took the time to get to know us. Our nurse from our first few cycles, Grace, is easily one of our favorite people ever!
