Dr. Wong provided my husband and I with realistic expectations and answered all of our questions. I never felt pressured with him and he always let us set the pace for our treatment plan. Additionally, whenever I reached out via e-mail, he responded promptly. I do wish that I was able to see him more often during my visits and/or that he performed all of my IUIs...
The majority of [the Kaiser Permanente SoCal] nurses and ultrasound techs were great! They were always really informative and kind with the exception of a few...It was really challenging to get an initial appointment due to their backlog from covid and sometimes getting appointments at the beginning of a cycle was challenging too. They only have about 3-4 doctors, so their availability can be very limited.
How was your experience with Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Dr. Wong provided my husband and I with realistic expectations and answered all of our questions. I never felt pressured with him and he always let us set the pace for our treatment plan. Additionally, whenever I reached out via e-mail, he responded promptly. I do wish that I was able to see him more often during my visits and/or that he performed all of my IUIs, but I understand it is operationally impossible given the backlog from covid and limited amount of REI doctors at Kaiser. Additionally, we weren't provided with a consultation to review our bloodwork results (genetic disease carrier) prior to beginning our first treatment cycle, which I think may have been an oversight or possibly because nothing abnormal was found. Unfortunately, when I reached out to schedule an appointment for this, he did't have availability until about a month later.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
He does his best to provide you with all of the information necessary, but be prepared with questions that are specific to your situation and treatment plan.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
I definitely feel like Dr. Wong treated me like a human. Although I didn't always see him or interact with him during my many visits, when I did interact with him he gave me the guidance I was looking for and answered all of my questions,
Describe the protocols Kenneth Wong used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente SoCal and their degree of success.
For my 1st IUI, Dr. Wong recommended 5 days on Letrozole, then one injection of Menopur on the 6th day, as well as monitoring via transvaginal ultrasound (one baseline, then another to check on follicle size). I responded well to this treatment plan (2-3 mature follicles), so he kept me on the same plan for all 3 IUI cycles that I went through. For my 4th IUI, he recommended that I do an injection cycle of Follistim, which I haven't started yet. His reasoning for moving on to an injection cycle was because it is injecting the actual hormone vs. Letrozole which "tricks the brain".
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
The majority of nurses and ultrasound techs were great! They were always really informative and kind with the exception of a few. The woman that made the appointments when you had to call in if you started your period always seemed really rushed and definitely treated me like a number. Then there was another nurse that I only encountered once who seemed indifferent/annoyed.
Describe your experience with Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
Overall, the clinic is fine, especially if your insurance covers treatment. If not, I would recommend going to a clinic that specializes in fertility treatments, as I am assuming the general attentiveness and doctor/nurse availability would be better. It was really challenging to get an initial appointment due to their backlog from covid and sometimes getting appointments at the beginning of a cycle was challenging too. They only have about 3-4 doctors, so their availability can be very limited.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
I am fortunate to have 100% coverage, so I did not need to pay anything out-of-pocket.
What specific things went wrong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
As I previously mentioned, I was not provided with an overview of my initial bloodwork results for genetic carrier testing and had to wait 1+ months to finally get it due to lack of appointment availability with my doctor.

I would have just preferred someone more sensitive to the situation and had better bedside manners when the treatment was being done...felt like [Dr. Wong] didn't understand how painful it was when he used the clamp to do IUI then switched to the ultrasound stick and back to IUI since my uterus/ cervix had moved, it was very painful and I cried during the session and he didn't show any compassion and spoke to me afterwards as things were matter of fact
Billing [at Kaiser Permanente SoCal] was a little complicated since they had messed up about 3-5 times. The appointments were pretty smooth so I appreciate that...There were a variety of nurses during my IUI treatments and it ranged from some caring nurses to some that were too busy to be compassionate since they were short staff, they had a lot of things to do...

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
If the patient does not need a compassionate caring doctor, I would recommend them switching since this would not be the doctor for them
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Didn't feel like my doctor had great bedside manners during the insemination process.
Describe the protocols Kenneth Wong used in your cycles at Kaiser Permanente SoCal and their degree of success.
I was not told about the treatment strategies until I asked what the next part was if I started my CD1. I was only aware of being on letrozole and how many pills only when I had called to get my first appointment and then the pharmacist told me. I was not told of how many follicles goal we were trying to target and therefore there was no specific rational. During IUI I was told a number for sperm motility and that was essentially it.

There were a variety of nurses during my IUI treatments and it ranged from some caring nurses to some that were too busy to be compassionate since they were short staff, they had a lot of things to do.

Billing was a little complicated since they had messed up about 3-5 times. The appointments were pretty smooth so I appreciate that. Although I do understand it is during the pandemic, it was hard not having your spouse there in the room during the treatment

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
The doctor did not mentioned the increase in medication for the next treatment. They also at first before I started IUI mention that we were not a candidate for IUI and IVF would be the better route. However, during the first IUI the same doctor mentioned that IVF might not be the best route and therefore the information was conflicting and confusing

During appointments he [Dr. Wong] presented information and answered all of our questions. He was reassuring and positive when he could be. At one point when delivering bad news, he was extremely blunt when it would have been nice to receive such bad news with more care and compassion.... I really had to advocate for options when we were initially told IVF was our only option. Because I pressed for other options, we saw improvement in our test results and we now have a ton of options before IVF.
The nursing staff [Kaiser Permanente SoCal] has been the best part of our whole experience. They have both been extremely compassionate, reassuring, and clear on the phone and in person. Both my husband and I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with the nursing staff in this office.... Once you have your initial appointment, much easier to get scheduled. The office staff is quick with calling back, attentive,
How was your experience with Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
He offered us whatever information we requested and was helpful in offering us whatever options were realistically available to us. I found, however, that I really had to advocate for options when we were initially told IVF was our only option. Because I pressed for other options, we saw improvement in our test results and we now have a ton of options before IVF.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kenneth Wong at Kaiser Permanente SoCal?
Advocate for yourself. Do your own research. Ask for alternatives. Start with small steps. Get the male partner tested first before starting ANY treatments.

Clomid for 2 cycles, 50 mg for 4 days starting on day 3 of the cycle. Progesterone test on day 19 of the cycle. Used to induce ovulation with PCOS. These 2 cycles were completed prior to husband being tested - once tested, we stopped with Clomid to try vitamins to increase his numbers.

Describe your experience with Kaiser Permanente SoCal.
Hard to get an appointment as an initial patient. Little coverage for insurance (as with most places). Once you have your initial appointment, much easier to get scheduled. The office staff is quick with calling back, attentive, and they don't keep you waiting to get tests completed and treatments started.

[Dr. Kenneth Wong] is very straightforward, although I wish he would have explained certain results of our labs/blood results a bit more delicately. He does tend to use a lot of scientific terminology, which can be a little hard to understand at times. With Kaiser, you might not always see Dr. Wong, sometimes you may see a nurse or PA or another doctor that is available.
You won't always see the same doctor, you may see a nurse or PA or different doctor (there are 3 dr's). It's sometimes hard to get a hold of someone on the phone...Early morning appointments were usually not available to me, which made it difficult because I work full-time (9-5). Wait times were sometimes very long--don't expect to be out quick. No weekend appointments unless you are going for ultrasound or IUI procedure.

I met dr Wong one time , and during that time he was very knowledgeable and let us know our chances of becoming pregnant once he diagnosed us with unexplained infertility . He right away wanted to take action and tell us what he recommended and that was an iui. ... We completed to iui treatments with dr Wong , you had to come in on day 3 of your period get scanned to make sure everything is a go , then prescribed Clomid 50 mg to take day3- day 7 then on day 8 take a shot of 1ml fermera sub q . On day 10 go in again for another ultrasound scan and the NP would then tell you when to administer your HCG trigger shot and the date to come in for insemination
The clinic [Kaiser Permanente] is very busy just stay up to date with your appts and be your own patient advocate , don’t be scared to ask any questions and if something should be done differently . All of the staff was very friendly and took there time with answering all your questions ... I would say the only reason I felt like a number was due to the scheduling system you had to call everyday that you were on your cycle to find an available appointment time , and this was difficult for me since I was driving an hour there and back.
