Everyone is so friendly & knowledgeable in this clinic [Northern California Fertility Medical Center]. They are very on top of everything, and are always so organized. I am staying with this clinic for my next cycle. The only “weakness” I would say, is that it’s hard to get into contact with the financial department. You hear from them much more through email, rather than in person or over the phone...In total, our cost was about 25,000. That was with insurance.

Describe the protocols Michael Murray used in your cycles at Northern California Fertility Medical Center and their degree of success.
When we first started Dr Murray had us do a number of blood tests & a water sonogram, to make sure there weren’t any fertility issues we had missed. I was told I didn’t need to have the “ink test” for my tubes, because we were moving straight to IVF. After all was clear, we began with birth control, went onto shots & egg retrieval, rest month, and then the transfer. After 2 losses prior to IVF, it was suggested we have our eggs genetically tested. Our transfer failed. We are now waiting to start a new cycle. This time we have a new plan.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
I think that everyone has different preferences when it comes to nurses/doctors. Our nurse was very capable, helpful, and organized. I just needed someone who was more empathetic, and nurturing for me personally.

How was your experience with Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Dr. Murray’s interaction with my husband and I were professional. His communication and timely service were his strengths. He ensured that all of our questions were answered and our infertility diagnostic results (I.e. semen analysis, HSG, blood work) were shared with us in a timely manner. One of his weaknesses is empathy. My husband and I were pretty anxious with the process of how infertility treatment work, and I don’t believe Dr. Murray observed our concerns and worries. We needed guidance but didn’t really get that from him so we conducted research on our own to ensure our decisions met our expectations.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Make sure to follow up with him if you have any questions. You have to advocate for yourself, especially when going through fertility treatment for the first time because there is no manual on what the steps are.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Dr. Murray was very professional and treated my husband and I neutrally. He ensured that all of our questions were answered and didn’t tried to sugar coat anything. He knew that we wanted clear feedback to ensure we make informed decisions so we really appreciated his professionalism. One thing that we were concerned was the process of going through fertility treatment and Dr. Murray carefully walked us through the process and help ease the beginning steps for us.
Describe the protocols Michael Murray used in your cycles at Northern California Fertility Medical Center and their degree of success.
Based on our infertility diagnostic results, we were faced with male infertility. My husband had low sperm count and zero percent morphology. We had to repeat a second semen analysis to confirm the severe male infertility results. Dr. Murray offered us one option: IVF with ICSI. We wanted to see if we were candidates for IUI but unfortunately we didn’t meet the qualifications according to Dr. Murray. It was disappointing and we are currently in the state of accepting our situation. It would have been nice to see all the options prior to being offer one option only.

Our patient coordinator was awesome. She made us feel comfortable and did her best to ensure we have multiple options to choose from since we were paying everything out of pocket.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
The clinic was transparent with their cost up front. There were no surprises. We paid everything out of pocket because our insurance didn’t cover fertility treatment. Our cost included: consultation (I.e. transvaginal ultrasound, vitals, speaking to Dr. Murray about our history), HSG, blood work, semen analysis, and consultation with urologist Dr. Gould.

Describe the protocols Michael Murray used in your cycles at Northern California Fertility Medical Center and their degree of success.
We did mixed IUi cycles with medication and injections. My first attempt was with clomid (and gonal-f). The clomid which didn’t really work for me so I was switched to a different medication with the gonal- f. I did 4 rounds of medications, but 3 round of the IUI (IUI done 2 days in a row) as I had one round of medication where inoculated early so we could not to the IUi part. I did not become pregnant. Between my 1st and 2nd IUI attempt Dr. Murray removed a polyp from my uterus that they had discovered on the ultrasounds. I also have a chronic illness and the medications exasterbated my other illness.

Strengths would definitely be the combined knowledge of all the doctors there. Weakness wise I sometimes felt lost in the shuffle and felt like I needed more specialized care at times. Every appointment (check) after my consult with Dr. Murray was done by different doctors. And to be honest they had slightly different ideas on treatment or some were more conservative about going ahead with an IUI cycle. At times it was a bit frustrating. Because of my chronic illness, I really struggled with the medications I did feel like certain aspects of my illness that could affect fertility weren’t addressed maybe as much as they should have been.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
I think it was about $2600 for each IUI cycle not including the medications which was about $2000 a cycle.
Describe Michael Murray's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
Dr. Murray was clear that due to my age if I did IVF I should also have the embryos genetically screened and then only one egg implanted at a time.
What specific things went wrong at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Provided conflicting information
Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
Mostly I just felt like I would get different and sometimes conflicting information from the different doctors. They front staff could be better about updating payment records. Every time I checked in I had to go through a couple people to show that I had already paid for a cycle.
Dr. Murray was very optimistic and answered all of our questions. He may have been a little over confident since we were "textbook" for a positive result which obviously didn't occur, but I don't know that any other course of action would have been viable...With Dr. Murray we did IVF. He did a full round of hormones including injections. We did an egg retrieval with ICSI and transferred two embryos on day 3. The lab made the call to do a day 3 transfer because the embryos looked good enough to do so. I however would have waited and possibly frozen the embryos to allow my body time to recover from the egg retrieval process.
The clinic [NCFMC] overall knows all of their patients and they treat them like family...They did not inform us that we could decline a day 3 transfer. We would have waited until the blastis stage and/or frozen the embryos so that we could allow time for my body to heal...We spent about $15,000 on IVF with Dr. Murray...My nurse was like family. When I ended up with yet another negative pregnancy she took it upon herself to call me even though she wasn't working that day and cried with me...

The first time we started the whole iui process, the doctor and all the support staff were very friendly. They responded very quickly to any questions or concerns that I called in with. I got pregnant on my 3rd iui attempt and after my son was born, we actually took him in so dr Murray and the staff could meet the miracle baby they helped me and my husband get, they felt like extended family. We are now trying for baby #2 with dr. Murray again and are currently in iui cycle number 2 right now.
Describe the protocols Michael Murray used in your cycles at Northern California Fertility Medical Center and their degree of success.
Cycle day 1 was first day of full flow period and call to let dr. Murray know
Cycle day 3-7 was 100mg of Clomid daily
Cycle day 8-12 was estrace (?mg) twice daily
Cycle day 11 start using home ovulation kit in the morning call with a positive result
If no positive result by cycle day 13, then call for next day appointment.
As soon as I got a positive on the ovulation kit, called office and I had a same day appointment for an ultrasound to confirm ovulation and good follicle size. Received a trigger shot of ovidrel and iui scheduled for the next day.
Day of iui, husband gave sperm sample and roughly 2hrs later was iui....another ultrasound to see if ovulation occurred. If not, then another iui was scheduled for the next day.
Starting the day after the last iui start progesterone vaginal suppositories nightly. If no period shows by 17days after iui then beta hcg blood test is ordered to check for pregnancy
Dr. Murray has given us inspiration that we have a chance to get pregnant. He's absolutely professional and his credibility has allowed us to lean on his expertise... We started with a laparoscopic surgery in 2015 and attempted two IUIs that were cancelled to my body not responding to the medications. We found a uterine polyp in 2017 and had it surgically removed by Dr. Murray. When we are ready and have enough money, we'll happily move forward with a frozen embryo IVF cycle and hope for the best.

So far, a lot of the major expenses (surgery) have been covered by insurance as diagnostic. We've paid for some meds and lots of copays. The IVF cycle we need is out of our financial reach at this time and it is all overwhelming.
He [Dr. Murray] explained the procedures well and advised me of pros and cons. Was always optimistic and encouraging with every appointment. Remembers treatments and previous discussions. Only complaint would be that the facility is very slow. I guess when you are trying to get pregnant you want things to go fast paced and when it doesn’t, it gets frustrating.

Around $1k for visits and medication, then I got a check for a $400 refund from them! We were ready to pay 10s of thousand and were thrilled!!
Dr. Murray has always done a very good job of discussing our treatment with BOTH of us, rather than just with me ... That said, it does feel like treatment there is "one size fits all," which obviously isn't always the case. ... I was very disappointed with the recommendation of using suppositories again when they didn't work well for me during my IUI. ... Dr. Murray was adamant that we transfer one embryo because it was tested as PGS normal and because of my age (33).
I like that the clinic [Northern California Fertility Medical Center] is open early - I can regularly get 7:30 appointments - which is important since I live quite a ways out of town. They aren't super clear about when things like payment is due - you really have to manage that part on your own. ... IUI was REALLY expensive compared to what I've seen elsewhere - $2500 or something. ... The medical assistants aren't always amazing but Alyssa, my nurse, has always been super communicative
How was your experience with Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Dr. Murray is great at working with you to make sure you understand what is going on with your treatment - explaining in terms that both partners understand.
That said, I don't feel like they have always been great at adjusting treatment as things change - when I didn't react as expected to the progesterone suppositories during my IUI, they still used the same progesterone suppository protocol during my FET, which I really feel contributed to the failure of that cycle.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Be prepared to advocate for yourself, and request repeat tests of anything that hasn't been done in the last six months. We wasted time on an IUI that was based on an out-dated semen analysis that showed we didn't have MFI, when in reality we do.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
Dr. Murray has always done a very good job of discussing our treatment with BOTH of us, rather than just with me, which hasn't been the case with all the doctors at the clinic. He makes my partner feel very much part of the equation.

IVF retrieval cycle was gonal-f and menopur, then cetrotide. Transfer cycle was letrozole days 3-7, gonal-f days 7-12, trigger day 12, transfer the following week, with antibiotics and prednisone before transfer, with progesterone suppositories after transfer. I've always ovulated on my own and had a good lining so that part was never a concern, but as I'd stated, I was very disappointed with the recommendation of using suppositories again when they didn't work well for me during my IUI.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northern California Fertility Medical Center. (Assigned nurse: Alyssa)
The medical assistants aren't always amazing but Alyssa, my nurse, has always been super communicative and very on top of any of my questions (which...I've had a lot of them). I appreciate how she answers my questions using scientific terms rather than dumbing things down - she understands that I am fairly knowledgeable about the whole process and speaks to me accordingly.

$13350 for the IVF retrieval cycle. $1750 for the first transfer, I think it is $3500 for any subsequent transfer. Retrieval cycles are cheaper after the first one (second retrieval is $12350, third is $10350?). IUI was REALLY expensive compared to what I've seen elsewhere - $2500 or something.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
There were a couple of times when the doctors didn't really talk to BOTH of us during appointments, which I didn't appreciate - they treated my partner like some kind of afterthought.
There was also the day where we took in a semen sample, and the medical assistant took it out of the bag, and viewed it and was very judgmental about the size of the sample in the middle of the hallway in front of other patients.

Understand that your primary doctor is going to do a great job communicating with the other doctors in the clinic and with your nurse. Don't be concerned that you might not always see him. I really appreciated all the doctors in the practice!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center?
The doctor treated me like a human but the financial department treated me like a number.
Describe the protocols Michael Murray used in your cycles at Northern California Fertility Medical Center and their degree of success.
Because of several surgeries that I had as an infant, my Fallopian tubes were damaged and lots of scare tissue surrounded my ovaries and mangled tubes. I also had fibroid tumors in my uterus. In March, Dr. Murray performed a surgery to clean up the scar tissue and mangled Fallopian tubes. He also took out the fibroid tumors that he could get to in my uterus. Then in June, I was able to start doing shots for egg retrieval.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
My nurse was amazing! She had her own voice mail that she checked constantly. She always called me back very quickly when I had questions. She did a great job making me feel comfortable and confident with all aspects of the treatments. Even after I had a confirmed pregnancy and had been released from the clinic's care, I wasn't feeling right and my nurse called me right back and got me an appointment that same morning that I called.
Describe your experience with Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
I really felt like each of the doctor's took care of me during each of my visits. Even if I didn't see my primary doctor, I felt like the doctor's did an excellent job communicating with each other. The nurses that helped me were wonderful and went out of their way to try to keep me comfortable. The only time when I felt a little disappointed with the clinic, was at the very beginning when we were talking to the financial department. The person that we spoke with did not seem very compassionate talking about the money involved in this process. IVF was the absolute only way for us to have a child and there is a lot of money involved. A little more understanding and empathy for the cost would have been nice.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Murray at Northern California Fertility Medical Center.
We did IVF about three years ago. I had to have a surgery before we could start any of the treatments. That surgery was covered by my insurance after I met my deductible. Then I began shots and ordered the drugs from a pharmacy from southern California. We spent approximately $6,000 on drugs throughout the process. After we the egg retrieval we then did ICSI which was an additional charge of $1500. The rest of the treatments cost us around $10,000.
