He [Dr. Gustofson] is kind and also aggressive with his approach, which I like....Still in progress, but so far his strengths are: aggressive approach, doing things differently, advocate for supplements and lifestyle, does a whole “priming month.” The clinic I’m still unsure of as I am just starting with them. I don’t like how they charge for everything... Go there and to him if you are desperate and willing to throw everything you got at this process.
The costs at cCRM are much higher than other clinics I’ve been to, which is too bad because they also don’t file insurance for tests and monitoring, if your insurance doesn’t cover “fertility treatment” but does cover these sorts of tests....Strengths and challenges: they are very strict about their policies when it comes to tests, etc. you have to do everything g all over with them. Most of their clientele is from out of state. I like how they are very big on supplements and other “non traditional” modalities.

Also don’t like that I have to fly there.

I came to Dr Gudtofson after a bad experience at another local clinic. I immediately liked him. I had a huge list of questions and a giant file of my past failures and losses. He really took the time to listen to me and directed me to the right protocol...Dr Gustafson was kind and so patient in explaining every step. He helped me educate myself and we made decisions together on my protocol. He was compassionate in helping me through my miscarriages.
[CCRM Denver] Strengths are embryology lab and doctors. Weak admin staff. Disorganized billing and communication. Lots of turnover...The nursing staff was good. I loved my initial nurse but she moved to another office. I had a few different ones after that. All were good, some I clicked with more than others. Just admin stuff. Nurses and doc's are great but front desk staff was chaos.
[Dr. Gustofson is] positive, caring, innovative, energetic...Trust that he knows what he's doing...CCRM is an extremely busy clinic - so sometimes you feel like a number - but they did an excellent job recognizing the emotional impact of the IVF process, trying to minimize the stress, educate us as much possible and the staff made us feel like they cared about us and our outcomes.
Excellent organization, emphasis on education and great with out of town patients. Extremely busy so sometimes you feel like you're part of a well oiled machine. Staff was much more human / kind / empathetic / knowledgable than at other clinics...$35,000 not including travel for the entire IVF cycle, including PGS

There was a "prep" month where I took testosterone and I think some other meds/supplements to help improve egg quality, etc. Then we used growth hormone (to improve egg quality), Menopur. I can't remember specifically the rest of our protocol /meds.

The nursing staff was caring, positive and for the most part responsive. Much more knowledgable, caring / empathetic and better at explaining things than our experiences with nurses at two other fertility clinics.

He [Dr. Gustofson] always showed care and concern about how I and my husband were feeling about the process. He never rushed us and would take plenty of time to answer our questions.... We went through frozen embryo banking. Although we understood that it was a numbers game, he never made us feel like a number. He was kind, considerate and candid. When we had setbacks, he addressed them quickly. He was always positive about our chances and was the first to congratulate us. I highly recommend him.
Very professional, cutting but not bleeding edge in technology. This clinic [CCRM] sets the standard for others to follow. Hands down, I would choose this clinic again. After going to another well-regarded clinic, I just wish I would’ve gone there sooner.... Helen was a poor communicator. When I asked for a different nurse, Dr. Gustofson immediately got me in touch with the perfect nurse.

[Dr. Robert Gustafson] was always very personable and I felt like he knew everything he needed to know about me at every phone call or email. I didn't feel as if he were just reading a chart....I loved that he was so accessible. Not all doctors at CCRM are so. Don't over look him for the glitz and glamour of other doctors at CCRM....We tried multiple treatment plans to get my uterus to respond. CCRM can be very overwhelming. They have a remarkable reputation and that can sometimes be daunting. You expect miracles. A lot of times those miracles do happen and sometimes they don't or they take other means to happen. And sometimes even the best doctors can't know everything. And be okay with that....CCRM was very expensive. But their statistics spoke for themselves. I will never regret making the decision to go there.

My experience with him [Dr. Gustofson] is that he saw a lot of patients in his practice, yet the team was small, warm, and compassionate. When you're working with fertility it's a very sensitive and personal topic, and I felt the team [at CCRM Louisville] exhibited empathy, especially when my process was fruitless...Standard baseline drugs like Clomid, 3 unsuccessful IUIs, and then a recommendation to move to IVF because of advanced maternal age

He explained everything to me and told me the next steps. I was upset he didn't do my retrieval, but he did do my transfer. I felt very comfortable with him and treatment plan... The information given sometimes wasn't always clear. I would hear one thing from the doctor and then my nurse would say another. Dr Gustafson was kind, professional, patient, and knowledgeable. He never talked down to us and always treated us like our questions or concerns were valid and important. We never felt rushed during appointments....The Louisville offices of CCRM are much smaller and more intimate than the Lone Tree Clinic. The clinic staff is smaller too. I feel that this was a positive because the staff all knew me by name and were very friendly and warm. We had the same people working with us almost every time, so people always knew our history and current situation and we didn't have to worry about telling our story again or about mistakes being made in appointments and procedures.

The Louisville offices of CCRM are much smaller and more intimate than the Lone Tree Clinic. The clinic staff is smaller too. I feel that this was a positive because the staff all knew me by name and were very friendly and warm. We had the same people working with us almost every time, so people always knew our history and current situation and we didn't have to worry about telling our story again or about mistakes being made in appointments and procedures.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado.
We started with an over the phone consult...Dr Gustofson called exactly on time...Unfortunately our medical records did not get to the office in time. That didn't stop him from doing a very thorough consult with us. He asked so many questions about our past, even questioned concerns I had brought up to OBGYNs for years and no one seemed to care about...felt like we were talking to someone who was dedicated to helping us and actually was listening to everything we had to say.
the people [at CCRM Colorado] I have called to ask questions with or spoke with regarding appointments have been awesome!...Extremely helpful with out of state patients regarding travel, stay, eat, etc...They do a lot more testing initially than I have had before but for all great reasons!...[Dr. Robert Gustofson] asked so many questions about our past, even questioned concerns I had brought up to OBGYNs for years and no one seemed to care about.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
We started with an over the phone consult since we live in MI. Which I was a little nervous about. Dr Gustofson called exactly on time. He was very understanding and explained everything to us. Unfortunately our medical records did not get to the office in time. That didn't stop him from doing a very thorough consult with us. He asked so many questions about our past, even questioned concerns I had brought up to OBGYNs for years and no one seemed to care about. He was very honest with us about a study we had interest in. I would say overall it was an amazing consult. It was just a relief to finally feel like we found the dr that we were going to go through IVF with.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
Be prepared and open. They do a lot more testing initially than I have had before but for all great reasons!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
We did an over the phone consult. Dr Gustofson was very friendly, he stayed on the phone with us for over and hour. Since we have been to another clinic in the past and have experience with another dr, my husband and I got off that phone call and actually felt like we were talking to someone who was dedicated to helping us and actually was listening to everything we had to say.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at CCRM Colorado.
I have only had little contact with some staff since I haven't started treatment yet. But the people I have called to ask questions with or spoke with regarding appointments have been awesome!
Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Strengths--Do a lot more initial testing before you even start a cycle. Do more things when making embryos to give you the best chance at getting the most good embryos. Extremely helpful with out of state patients regarding travel, stay, eat, etc.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado.
My husband and I have NO insurance coverage so everything will be paid out of pocket. Our initial consult was around $300. The nurses sent me all the information regarding IVF. They even laid out everything that our insurance would cover (basically just some initial blood tests). IVF will cost about $30k with medications.
He [Dr. Gustofson] was available for any questions we may have. His bedside manner and concern for our journey is to be commended. When our first cycle did not end in pregnancy, he was just as sad for us as we were for ourselves...ISCI was used due to my husband's vasectomy reversal. We also did PGS testing of all embryos...He explained the process and what was going on with each of us from what he could tell from all of our testing.
They [nurses at CCRM Colorado] were very informative of any and all communication. They are available to talk to whenever I needed them as well...We got a discount for my husband serving in the military. Overall cost of our cycle was 20K...Weaknesses - They have a lot of patients and if you are not familiar with the IVF process it can seem overwhelming...staff was amazing. They were thorough and positive through the whole process. I understood everything that we were going to be doing.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
Dr. G is amazing. He explained the process and what was going on with each of us from what he could tell from all of our testing. He drew the process out from us and ensured that we fully understood what was happening and what was going to be happening. He was available for any questions we may have. His bedside manner and concern for our journey is to be commended. When our first cycle did not end in pregnancy, he was just as sad for us as we were for ourselves.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
Get a consult with Dr. G so that you can tell how great of a doctor that he is and that there is a way even when it may seem hopeless.

The feeling I had in Dr. G and his staff was amazing. They were thorough and positive through the whole process. I understood everything that we were going to be doing.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles at CCRM Colorado and their degree of success.
We did a testosterone antagonist protocol - if I remember correctly. ISCI was used due to my husband's vasectomy reversal. We also did PGS testing of all embryos.

They were well informed of my cycle and Dr. G's plan for us. They were very informative of any and all communication. They are available to talk to whenever I needed them as well.
Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
Strengths - They have the best lab in the country (if not the world). They know the latest practices and protocols. I was for straight forward communication and blunt answers, and once I stated that they knew how to communicate effectively with me while keeping the bedside manner in tact.
Weaknesses - They have a lot of patients and if you are not familiar with the IVF process it can seem overwhelming.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at CCRM Colorado.
During the week I made appointments at my clinic that Dr. G was at. If I needed an appointment on the weekend, I had to drive to another clinic to have it done. There was order and never took more time than expected, it worked around my schedule.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado.
We got a discount for my husband serving in the military. Overall cost of our cycle was 20K
Dr. Gustofson spoke to us for a very long time and warned us that he saw "red flags with shooting rockets" to indicate his concern around my very low AMH levels. Even though my partner and I are not planning to conceive for a few more years, he reassured us that we were doing the right thing by seeing him now, given our cause for concern... outlined all of the possible scenarios to explain my very low AMH level. He came up with a solid testing plan to conduct further analysis. He has been available for any questions I've had throughout the process, and has answered me thoroughly within the same day.
CCRM is well organized, warm and welcoming. they handled my case with great professionalism and I trust them due to their reputation. I am new to this world of infertility, and I feel that they are sensitive to my fears and concerns...my diagnostic tests to determine my fertility complications cost around $1200...Dr. Gustofson spoke to us for a very long time and warned us that he saw "red flags with shooting rockets" to indicate his concern around my very low AMH levels.

Dr. G [Dr. Gustofson] is very warm, and genuinely cares about his patients. He always runs on time, listens very well, and provides excellent data when answering questions...He found an underlying issue that was causing PCOS and treated that which then helped me get pregnant. We did 3 egg retrievals and embryo banking. We transferred one frozen embryo and are currently pregnant. I can't say enough good things about Dr. G and the nursing staff. Would highly recommend. The IVF process is taxing but I always felt that I understood the process, next steps, and odds for success..
[CCRM Colorado]Clinic staff was good. They have a billing representative available to answer questions. I always felt that I knew what was going on with appointments and billing. Appointments were always kept and I never felt I had to wait around for my appointments, which is very helpful as you do end up having quite a few appointments when you go through IVF!

He [Dr. Gustofson] is very thorough when explaining what we have done, what we will do, what we can expect, and what will be next. He shows empathy and seems to really understand what a difficult journey this is for his patients and is very supportive. He remembers personal details I've shared about our family which helps to feel there is a true connection. He always followed up with a phone call after our transfers and answered all questions we had. He makes us feel comfortable and safe.
CCRM has a great laboratory that helps to yield good results, ie live births. They are pioneers of the field so you know you are getting great care. They are a big clinic so sometimes you can feel lost as a number. Some doctors dont have great bedside manner but ours did. They are more expensive then most clinics it seems. They have great hours which allows for flexibility. Many other clinics are not open on weekends.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
Dr. G is very personable. He remembers my past medical history as well as personal details that I've shared. He always makes us feel comfortable. I've laughed and cried with him and he's always been supportive. He answers all my questions thoroughly and in a way I can understand. He gives the facts with great bedside manner.
Describe the protocols Robert Gustofson used in your cycles at CCRM Colorado and their degree of success.
After trying 5 IUI'S at another clinic we consulted with Dr. G. He had a thorough understanding of what we have tried and created a plan to move forward with IVF, stating we could try one more IUI but it was not likely to work. He recommended IVF with 50/50 ICSI and conventional fertilization. I don't know the name of the protocol but it seemed pretty straight forward. My body had not settled down from the stim meds after first retrieval for our planned fresh cycle so moved on to a frozen transfer. We transferred 2 embryos and successful delivered a singleton. 2 years later we transferred 2 more embryos using the same protocol for priming. This resulted in a chemical pregnancy. 5 months after that we transferred our lastv3 embryos with the same protocol and the addition of the antihistamine protocol to address the possibly reasoning for the chemical pregnancy. We had never had a chemical pregnancy or miscarriage before. This also resulted in a chemical pregnancy.
Describe your experience with your nurse at CCRM Colorado. (Assigned nurse: Chris Neely)
Our nurse was overall very good. She was generally compassionate. There was a period when the clinic was busy and undergoing changes that I believe was stressful for her as it showed in her interaction with us. She seemed annoyed at times, called me by the wrong name and just seemed busy and bothered. She did turn around after a bit of time. She is always quick to respond.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado.
We used the assure program for out first transfer and that cost $32k for up to 3 fresh and 3 frozen transfers or until a live birth. Consults and regroups cost $250. Frozen embryo transfers were about $6,000 without monitoring.
Describe Robert Gustofson's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at CCRM Colorado.
Prior to our first IVF it was explained that we could transfer 1 or 2 embryos and what the risks were when transferring multiples. We decided to transfer 2. Because I had such a strong inital beta it was thought I may have had twins but only one embryo implanted. Our 2nd transfer we also decided to transfer 2 based on doctor recommendation since we only had a singleton with the prior transfer. The 3rd transfer we also transferred 2 for the same reason. At first the doctor left the choice of 1-2 up to us but based on the results he then strongly recommend transferring 2 but still allowed it to be our choice.
What specific things went wrong at CCRM Colorado?
Lost paperwork
Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at CCRM Colorado.
They had difficulty locating some of my medical records that were sent from another clinic so I had to resend them.
Dr G [Gustofson] made the experience as good as it could be. When questions came up, he took the time to talk through the pros and cons as well as offer any insight on his recommended course of action. He always took the time to make it feel like a conversation rather than us sitting back waiting for him to tell us what to do. Because of those reasons, we are continuing to work with him through another egg retrieval and would never consider working with another doctor through this journey!!
The Louisville clinic [CCRM] does a great job making you feel welcome, it doesn't feel as clinicy as you might expect. Tara in ultrasound was also awesome to work with. It was nice to always see a smiling face whether it was for testing, a regroup or just bloodwork.... Most all of the nurses we have dealt with have all been fantastic and do a great job communicating.... Dr G [Gustofson] had/has gone above and beyond to take time to work with us and make sure we do NOT feel like a number.

Dr G had/has gone above and beyond to take time to work with us and make sure we do NOT feel like a number. He has scheduled conference calls with us since we have moved farther away and has always been there to answer our questions.

I don't remember a ton of the specifics after the long journey but I do often remember Dr G thoroughly explaining things. For example we had first planned to do a fresh embryo transfer but when that was not the best course, Dr G took the time to explain to us why and how we could best proceed from there. He also did a great job reassuring my wife after the miscarriages that it was nothing she did.

I am still blown away at how accessible Dr. Gustofson was. If I was in doubt about any detail or wanted to ask him a question directly, I could simply e-mail him, and he responded directly. I do not have this degree of access to any other doctor anywhere....Dr. Gustofson changed his entire protocol for notifying patients about communicable disease antibodies. He's not afraid to admit a problem and he's not afraid to solve problems, however small or large.
For our one-day consultation, we started out in the conference room with a group of couples from all over the country. We then ran through a series of appointments and tests, which concluded with a meeting with our doctor. That day will cover all of your questions.... Make use of CCRM's portal for communication. It's much easier than trying to deal with the phone tree. You can always get to your nurse's line directly through her extension. I am still blown away at how accessible Dr. Gustofson is.

Go, just go. We lucked into him because I called CCRM, and they gave me his first available appointment. It was a perfect blessing.
Be honest with him. He'll be honest back.
When we had a communication snafu regarding the results of my husband's Hep C antibodies, the nurse called and didn't explain the situation very well, which led to lots of strife. Dr. Gustofson changed his entire protocol for notifying patients about communicable disease antibodies. He's not afraid to admit a problem and he's not afraid to solve problems, however small or large.

Egg retrieval - I can't remember all the drugs
FET1 - 1 embryo transferred, 1 live birth - same protocol generally as FET3
FET2 - 1 embryo transferred, chemical pregnancy - same protocol generally as FET3
FET3 - 2 embryos transferred, 2 pregnancies in progress - 21 days of birth control (7/20/18-8/11/18), lupron (10 units 8/7/18-8/29/18), vivelle patches every other day (starting 8/16/18), endometrium 100mg (starting 8/30/18), medal (8/30/18-9/2/18), doxycycline 100mg 2x daily (8/30/18 until gone), embryo transfer on 9/4/18
Describe your experience with your nurse at CCRM Colorado. (Assigned nurse: Monica, then Sarah)
ou want more than a proficient doctor. You want your doctor supported by top-notch embryologists, high-knowledge nurses and clinicians, and a willing, helpful and thoughtful financial department. The support staff at CCRM is excellent. The embryologists and nurses are diligent and thoughtful and present a can-help attitude constantly. The attitude elsewhere was consistently “no, we don’t do that.” CCRM will find a solution to your problems. They will help you track down drugs through various or multiple pharmacies even if it’s annoying. The business office will answer all of your questions, help you find cost-effective strategies through various programs, and will make every effort to navigate insurance chaos on your behalf.
Describe your experience with CCRM Colorado.
IVF is a complex process that involves more than doctors. We relied heavily on the embryologists, the nurses, and the business office. At every other clinic, the care was far less comprehensive and very disjointed. We sought care locally in Jacksonville at three clinics. Dissatisfied, we considered several clinics in New York and Los Angeles. After our initial call with CCRM, we were convinced to give it a whirl and went out for our 1-day consultation. Maybe the best decision of our marriage.
We saw Dr. Gustofson at the Lone Tree office. While Denver is a fantastic city, the Lone Tree area is pretty generic, full of national chains and light on charm. We preferred to stay downtown or in Cherry Creek. For our first 1-day consultation, we stayed in Lone Tree for the convenience. For longer visits, enjoy the charm of Denver and make the daily drive to Lone Tree for your appointments. The clinic is 15 minutes from Cherry Creek.
We were impressed and pleased at every turn. For our one-day consultation, we started out in the conference room with a group of couples from all over the country. We then ran through a series of appointments and tests, which concluded with a meeting with our doctor. That day will cover all of your questions.
CCRM only accepts United for insurance. Otherwise, it's about $5,000 out of pocket. They do accept American Express now but didn't in 2016 when we first went to CCRM. You have to do this same initial work-up before the start of each new cycle.
As an out-of-town patient, the most complicated aspect will be getting your local clinic to send the results in a timely manner. You'll have to get monitoring and blood drawn at a local clinic throughout the process. My biggest frustrations were getting my results to CCRM from labs and other clinics. You will likely have to be really pushy with your local clinics. It might create some awkward tension, especially since you aren't really going to them for medical advice, only asking them to take orders from CCRM.
Make use of CCRM's portal for communication. It's much easier than trying to deal with the phone tree. You can always get to your nurse's line directly through her extension.

retrieval: $9315 to CCRM, $15170 to labs (plus local monitoring)
FET (per transfer, we did 3 transfers): $2630 to CCRM, $2815 to labs (plus local monitoring)
Describe Robert Gustofson's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at CCRM Colorado.
CCRM promotes strongly that singleton births are the new standard of IVF, per the journal articles written by Schoolcraft. We transferred 1 embryo with success and had out first child. We then transferred 1 embryo and had a chemical pregnancy. At that point, we then had 2 "normal" embryos remaining and 1 "no result" embryo remaining. We were feeling the sad desperation and pressure, and Dr. G. was understanding. Despite the fact that I was under 35 and that we had done CCS, he agreed to go against the recommendations to only transfer 1 in our situation. He agreed that transferring 2 would be okay as I didn't have complications in my first pregnancy and carried to full-term. He thoroughly explained the risks. We decided that we would do another retrieval if our next transfer failed because we were wary of transferring the "no result" embryo. We understood that we had a 42% chance of twins. We knew the risk. We are now excited about twins.
Dr. G [Gustofson] never rushed me, took the time to answer all questions. Communicated directly with me. Even in their portal to ask nurses questions, he allows his patients to email him. I think he's still the only doctor at Lone Tree CCRM to do that.... I participated in the acai study; I religiously took the full vitamin cocktail they recommend (as did my husband). I took hcg, gonal F, follistem, menopur, noravel, saizen, cetrotide, lupron, vivelle, Endometrin, progrestrone
Their approach is so technical yet felt specialized to me. I feel like their level of experience, research and knowledge is the best. I never felt like they were trying to achieve their success rates, I felt like they were trying to help me achieve my goal.... the first round costs to CCRM were around $30K (doesn't include drugs) and the 2nd & 3rd rounds combined were about $25K. I only needed two rounds so they credited me for the third round.
How was your experience with Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
Dr G explained the process at every step. He was always patient and thorough. He explained exactly what he expected to happen the results he expected and always fully explained what he thought was had happened and what he would do about it. Very thorough and always made me feel like I was in the very best care possible.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Robert Gustofson at CCRM Colorado?
Follow their instructions and recommendations. Ask a lot of questions, don't be shy but also trust them and what they recommend. Don't be afraid to ask him what he would do if the situation was reversed.

based on success rates & data for my age and situation the recommendation was always to transfer one (depending on quality of embryo).
