Attention to Detail
Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.
For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.
CDC Success Rates
This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr. Honea is very nice and explains why things are happening.... She takes care of any doubts you might have. When she looked through my file she noticed some discrepancies from my previous doctor and decided to do her own investigation to find out what my real diagnosis is. She gave my husband and me a better chance than previous doctors.... Nancy does all of my ultrasounds in the Huntsville office. She is very kind and provides you with a very comforting feeling.
At the Huntsville clinic [ART Fertility Program of Alabama], you will have the same nurse and staff each time which I love mainly because I never have to wonder who someone is . It is a small clinic but you never wait more than a few minutes.... Nancy does all of my ultrasounds in the Huntsville office. She is very kind and provides you with a very comforting feeling.... She [Dr. Houserman] takes her time during consults, and reviews the plan and options thoroughly...She’s been great. She knows my history and is willing to do whatever it takes. She always gives us her full attention and she is very kind. When she has done my iui she was extremely efficient and gentle. I look forward to my visits with her...First, clomid, because I had only used letrizole to date. Then we added follistim and pregnyl and iui. For a year, that was the plan every month except those that holidays or travel got in the way. We got pregnant after 5 months with dr. H but lost the baby at week 7. We did everything right, the clinic handled the situation with the utmost respect. After the iui and tons of testing, the Mc was deemed unexplained. We did 2 more iui after that and no result, so now we are preparing to move on to next step
They [nurses at ART Fertility Program of Alabama] always know and recognize me. They are all efficient and friendly. My visits are Always on time and they communicate well...The place needs a facelift, it feels very dingy and outdated, but the quality of care is excellent. Also, the option to use a satellite clinic is super helpful since there are so many visits. My husband always had a hard time with sperm collection in the clinic because the room is awkward, but they will let you take a cup and bring it back, that’s been real helpful...Iui is $400 with sperm wash...First, clomid, because I had only used letrizole to date. Since our first appointment Dr. Allemand had been very helpful and informative. He did somewhat get my hopes up by saying I'm young and thin and I'll have no problem getting pregnant. That was 5 months ago...But he's always had another plan and has always been open to my feelings and plans for the future.
The front desk [at ART Fertility Program of Alabama] lady is super nice. The blood work technicians are nice, I just wouldn't say they're the most compassionate people in the office. The nurse practitioner is nice and informative and the nurse is kind and caring. ... One time I was told my progesterone would be called into the pharmacy across the street. By the time I got over there they had no record of the prescription. It was not a huge deal it was just a little bit of an inconvenience to go back to the clinic to find out what was wrong.

We did many rounds of of timed intercourse and only one was successful but ended in miscarriage [protocol with Dr. Houserman]. We’ve also done two IUIs which were both unsuccessful. We used follistem injections and letrozole to help me have more follicles and better chances of conceiving...is very caring, and personalized a treatment plan specifically for my husband and I. She is somewhat straight forward, but we like that. We definitely feel like she genuinely cares for us.
My main nurses [at ART Fertility Program of Alabama] were wonderful! They helped me through every process, answered my millions of questions, and gave me hope. They are beautiful ladies with hearts of gold!...there was just one time that I wasn’t called with lab results, only they documented that they did call. Not a big deal in the long run...Overall, the clinic is run pretty well. The staff is friendly, and they all seem to truly care about their patients. Labs come back properly and calls are returned promptly, most of the time. I enjoy the ladies that work there.
How was your experience with Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
Overall, Dr. Houserman and my experience have been very positive. I like how caring and positive she is. However, she is also very straight forward, which is something I don’t mind. She also is only willing to try treatment plans that we are comfortable with. She doesn’t try to push certain treatments or procedures we aren’t ready for. We very much enjoy her.

Some people might think that her being straight forward is harsh, but she’s very genuine and has a good heart. So, don’t mistaken that for her being rude or uncaring.

She [Dr. Houserman] is so smart and does a great job at explaining things in detail. She is friendly and makes you feel welcome...At first she seems cold and like she’s talking in a different language. But once you start talking to her she is super friendly and open to any questions or concerns and addresses them...I did iui’s with clomid and then she switched me to letrazole just to see if my body would react better. Same reaction. So then we did a pure shot cycle with iui. Used follistim and HCG shot. Ovaries reacted very well. But my emotions were horrible i was super angry all of the time. Then i quit working and decided to go to IVF. did follistim menopur progesterone hcg leuprolide. Did egg retrieval with good results froze the unused embryos and am currently waiting to see if i am pregnant from the fresh transfer.
Love ALL of the nurses at both Montgomery and Birmingham [offices of ART Fertility Program of Alabama]. They all are so positive and make it as nice of an experience as possible. We never even have to wait very long either which is awesome...Only twice the nurses forgot to give me a prescription. One time it was for progesterone but the nurse at Birmingham asked about it and got it for me immediately and did not affect that cycle at all. And the other time the nurse forgot to give me the prescription for antibiotics that we had to take before the egg retrieval but once again it did not effect the cycle bc i got home and looked at my calendar and saw i was supposed to get the prescription.

We thought really hard about this. We chose to transfer 2 embryos instead of just one because of me having unexplained infertility. We still don’t know what the problem is so we wanted as much of a chance that was possible just in case implantation has been the problem. We asked dr Houserman and she was immediately onboard with it. I thought she was going to push to do just one bc of the risks but given my age and all of my bloodwork and everything always looking amazing and promising she decided it would be worth it for us.

I've enjoyed working with Dr. Allemand thus far. He is a good communicator and thoroughly addresses my concerns and answers my questions. He is obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about his patients. I have not identified any concerns about his care.... He is logical and works in a stepwise fashion, wanting to avoid any unnecessary treatment. This philosophy aligns with my goals, but may not align with every patient's goals.
I have generally enjoyed working with Tracey and the ART team in Montgomery. They are caring and compassionate and provide patient-centered care.... I did have one situation in which an appointment I had scheduled was not recorded in their system. However, this was because they had recently hired a new front-desk clerk and the error occurred in training. I have had no other such issues.... Strengths: small and reasonably efficient; you're usually able to get in and out efficiently for normal monitoring appointments

Cycles 1&2 [with Dr. Cecil Long], Clomid with monitoring. Cycles 3-5, Gonal-f, Menopur, and hcg trigger with IUI. Rational was to try and produce one quality egg each cycle. Quality over quantity. None of the cycles were successful... we wish he would have been a bit more aggressive...There were several cycles where we used injections, which are very expensive, and rather than up the dose or change the medication protocol, he would have me taking injections for more than two weeks. Honestly, we believe that contributed to late ovulation and therefore lack of success with our IuI procedures.
The greatest strength of ART in my opinion is their timeliness. They are very quick and very thorough. Everyone is so friendly, but not over the top. The lab people are amazing, and results are called in as soon as possible, sometimes expedited. Each nurse takes their time with the patient and doesn’t rush through anything. Every doctor is the same. They truly care about helping families expand!...These nurses have cried with us on many occasions. Always helpful, pleasant, and encouraging.
How was your experience with Cecil Long at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
Dr. Long has excellent bedside manner. He is very thorough, though not as aggressive as we would have liked at times. He’s very conscious of the cost of treatment, but sometimes can ignore that fact. Hence, we wish he would have been a bit more aggressive with out treatments. I was concerned about my weight, and I wasn't having cycles on my own. She [Dr. Houserman] told me it was a non-issue, as my treatments were essentially controlling my hormones and their roles for me. I took a break for over two years. I lost 40 pounds, and came back to her for treatment again. When I visited her for a new consult, she said they weightloss was great, but another 40 pounds would be even better... I was confused because years earlier, it seemed to be a non-issue. Anybody who's ever gone through fertility treatments knows what a difficult task it is to lose weight while injecting all of these meds. I didn't lose any weight during the next 7 months of treatment, but I didn't gain any either. My follicles definitely responded better this time, as I was ready to trigger just 10 days in! I went through 7 months of treatments, each ending with a negative beta.
out of pocket they [IUIs] were around $400 per cycle. IVF starts around $11,000 per individual cycle [at ART Fertility Program of Alabama]...The Montgomery clinic is a small satellite clinic for the main office in Birmingham. The doctor is only at the satellite office when visiting a new patient. All interactions with the doctor from the satellite clinic are via video conference. The Montgomery office is small, but I've never had to wait more than just a few minutes to get back to a patient room.
How was your experience with Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
Dr. Houserman is very realistic, without being overly blunt. She will answer any questions you may have, but over my entire course of treatment, I've only seen her a few times. Almost all of my interactions have been through the Nurse Practitioner. If I do "meet" with Dr. Houserman, it's a teleconference. If I want to meet in person, I have to drive to Birmingham, which is over 2 hours away. When she comes to the Montgomery clinic, it's only for new patients. It makes me feel like a level of personal understanding of my needs and goals is not being met.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
She is practical and realistic. She is not overly soft & sensitive, so if you're looking to be hugged and coddled, she is not the doctor for you. She is warm and kind but matter-of-fact when it comes to prognosis, treatment, etc.
Describe the protocols Virginia Houserman (retired) used in your cycles at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama) and their degree of success.
I have PCOS. I initially went to Dr. Houserman years ago, but my follicles would never grow to maturity to do a trigger shot. I was concerned about my weight, and I wasn't having cycles on my own. She told me it was a non-issue, as my treatments were essentially controlling my hormones and their roles for me. I took a break for over two years. I lost 40 pounds, and came back to her for treatment again. When I visited her for a new consult, she said they weightloss was great, but another 40 pounds would be even better. I went through 7 months of treatments, each ending with a negative beta. I started out with clomid+menopur for a couple of cycles, then just menopur, then increased menopur, then follistim+menopur. The longer I continued with treatments, the slower my follicles began to grow. It's as if my body was just tired, and nothing was working. I met with her a couple of months ago, where she told me I had made a 'valiant effort', but it was time to move on to IVF.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama). (Assigned nurse: Tracy)
Tracy is a very good listener. She's honest, compassionate and optimistic, which is exactly what you need when you're going through this process. She, too, has gone through treatments, so she understands the whole process from the patient's side.
Describe your experience with Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
The Montgomery clinic is a small satellite clinic for the main office in Birmingham. The doctor is only at the satellite office when visiting a new patient. All interactions with the doctor from the satellite clinic are via video conference. The Montgomery office is small, but I've never had to wait more than just a few minutes to get back to a patient room.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
Insurance did not cover IUIs, so out of pocket they were around $400 per cycle. IVF starts around $11,000 per individual cycle.

Do your research on all possible infertility problems before you visit her and if you think you might have a particular problem that they have not looked into or diagnosed, push for the specific tests that can diagnose that problem. Also, set your boundaries with her up front to let her know if you do not have the financial means to do iui or ivf.
I felt like since I had to go to a satellite office (since it was the closest of their offices to me), I had a lot of ultrasounds with no discussion at all about what was going on. If I wanted to see the Dr., I either had to schedule a video conference, which took over a month...
How was your experience with Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
Strengths were that I did eventually get in to do an exploratory laparoscopic surgery to evaluate the structure of my reproductive organs.
Weakness - Although I had already been trying for over year and a half to get pregnant before I came to Houserman, it still took her over 7 months to give me any kind of diagnosis and she was willing to suggest I do costly fertility treatments, even if my problem could have prevented them from having any chance of working. I went to Dr. Houserman the first visit and gave her a comprehensive list of my health problems (heavy, long periods; back pain; pelvic pain; pain during intercourse; bowel trouble and bleeding bowel). What I know now is that all of these symptoms were reason to look into whether my problem was endometriosis. Instead, she prescribed me fertility medications which contained estrogen, which makes endometriosis worse and increases the inflammation, which decreases the chance of an egg getting fertilized and implanting. I feel like the 7 months and the hundreds of dollars I spent on fertility injections were a complete waste of time and money.
Weakness - they do not do excision surgery on endometriosis and perpetuate the false information that burning off endometriosis with a laser will treat it and increase your chances of fertility. In reality (there is scientific evidence to back this up), the endometriosis can grow back as soon as the month after the surgery, so there is no guarantee that you have any period of better fertility. Instead of referring endo patients to an excision specialist, they continue to prescribe fertility meds and recommend iui and/or ivf without telling you anything about your decreased chances in those working if the endo grows back.
Weakness: Do not give you any information on the possibility of any of your problems being cancerous. I went in the month after my lap surgery and was told I had a 7 cm cyst on my ovary and not given any information on the type of cyst, the precaution I should take to not increase the chances of the cyst growing bigger, or given any reason as to why a cyst that large popped up in a mere 3 weeks after my lap.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?

Also, set your boundaries with her up front to let her know if you do not have the financial means to do iui or ivf. That way, she knows to be honest with you and tell you there is nothing more she can do to help you besides doing one of those procedures. It will eliminate wasting more time and money.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
No, I felt like since I had to go to a satellite office (since it was the closest of their offices to me), I had a lot of ultrasounds with no discussion at all about what was going on. If I wanted to see the Dr., I either had to schedule a video conference, which took over a month, or I had to drive an additional 2 hours to the main office, which still took over a month to get in. During the video conferences, I felt like nothing was discussed in depth and I was given short answers, if any at all. We never got to the bottom of the problem of what was wrong with me, I was just always encouraged to do iui, even though my husbands' sperm was tested and proven to be more than good two times. Even though I felt that I had endometriosis and was told there might be a polyp in my uterus, I was still told to try iui until I pushed hard for exploratory laparoscopic surgery. I was not even told the lap was an option until I was 6 months into the treatments. I initially thought they would study my case individually, not just push me into a treatment that was not specifically designed to treat my condition.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama). (Assigned nurse: Sheena)
They had one nurse practitioner at the Montgomery satellite office. Her name was Sarah and she was the only person who would give you medical information or evaluate your records and ultrasounds. Most of the time they would not schedule you with her. They would schedule you with the regular nurse, Sheena, who would not even look at your ultrasound or tell you anything about it. She would not volunteer info about test results. You had to ask her and pull it out of her. All she did was look at the plan Dr. Houserman created for you and ask you if you were ready for her to put the prescription in to the mail order pharmacy. So, unless you saw Sarah, there was really no point in even having an ultrasound. Unfortunately, as of last week, Sarah is no longer there and it is only Sheena.
What specific things went wrong at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?

Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
They never gave me the results of my PCOS or blood clotting test. When I followed up with the nurse, Sheena, and asked about the PCOS results, at an appointment for bloodwork, Sheena told me "it's possible." I asked her to elaborate and also tell me why I was not told. She said there was one area that my levels were elevated, but I was probably not told because they probably just entered the "it's possible" result so that my insurance would cover it. I was even more confused and worried than before I took the test and still have not received any kind of explanation about this.
I had my baseline testing at the beginning of my cycle that I was going to try iui for the first time. I was really excited and hopeful since I had just had a lap and supposedly my uterus was clear and all organs looked good to conceive. During my baseline ultrasound, I was told I had a 7cm cyst and I did not need to have sex or have my cycle followed at all. I was in complete shock. No one told me what kind of cyst or gave me any instructions for care. They just scheduled me for an appointment to come in for another ultrasound 2.5 weeks later. That is a long time to question what is going on with yourself, could it be cancerous, could it burst. I am still waiting for that appointment.

We liked how matter of fact Dr. Long is when explaining treatments and risks/benefits. He is very thorough, without overwhelming you with data. We like that he is optimistic but realistic. The only thing that really bugged us is that we felt that for all the money we were spending, he wasn’t being as aggressive as we would like....Expect a slow and steady course of treatment. Always erring on the side of caution. It can be frustrating, but he has your best interest in mind.
This clinic [ART Fertility Program of Alabama] is vast in size, but very small town minded. Nurses, doctors, and staff all took the time to get to know us. Appointments are made quickly and blood work is returned quickly. Everyone seems to want to make sure their patients know they are the priority....Same nurses every visit, so very little turn over. All were compassionate and hopeful for us as future parents. All shared tears with us upon receiving negative results.

Our cycles were IUI with donor sperm. Medication protocol was 10-16 days of ovulation stimulation, HCG trigger, followed by IUI 12 hours later. In three cycles, we used Follistim, Gonal-f, Menopur, and HCG. Progesterone supplements followed each IUI until pregnancy test.

Dr Long has so many good qualities about him and his bedside manner as a doctor. I have nothing negative to say about him. During our initial consultation, he gave my husband and me his personal cell number and told us to call/text him whenever we had questions or concerns. One Friday I went in for labs to determine if I was pregnant, and his office staff did not get my labs back in time before they closed for the weekend. Dr Long took the time to go into the office the next morning (Saturday), check my results, and call my husband and me directly to speak to us and let us know the heartbreaking news. He always makes me feel as if I am well taken care of and as if I am an actual patient that he knows personally. I will forever recommend Dr Long to any of my friends who face infertility.

Dr Long took the time from our initial consultation to get to know me, my husband, our family history, and our plans as parents. During that same meeting, he completed extensive tests to determine if there were easily identifiable reasons for why we could not become pregnant even after a year of trying. Even though we have not had a positive pregnancy test yet, Dr Long still goes above and beyond to give us the best care possible and encourages us to remember the end goal while continuing treatments. We love Dr Long and his entire staff. They make us feel at home and loved while we’re there.
Describe the protocols Cecil Long used in your cycles at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama) and their degree of success.
Most months, I begin taking 2.5 mg of Letrozole on cycle days 5-9. Letrozole helps me to grow follicles since I only ovulate on my right side. I then go in for my follicle check on day 9, and that would determine when I needed to take my trigger shot (Ovidrel—ordered from a specialty pharmacy in New Jersey). Once I take my trigger shot, we usually would go in for our IUI the next day. After our IUI, Dr Long would ask me to vaginally take progesterone which would help me to sustain a pregnancy if I had gotten pregnant.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
Hannah (Dr Long’s radiologist) is the most precious human being I have ever met! She also takes the time to get to know each patient, and she prays over us each day on her way to/from work. She is just as eager as we are for us to become parents, and she does whatever she can to help us achieve our dream. Katie (Dr Long’s head nurse) is also precious. If I call her line to ask a question, she almost always answers. If not, she returns my call within a few minutes. The receptionist and other nurses are also amazing women who go above and beyond for all of their patients. They truly make me feel like I am home when I am there!
Describe your experience with Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).

He [Dr. Cecil Long] has been very compassionate in every aspect including giving me his personal number if I ever needed him or had any questions. He has ran tests, diagnosed me and fixed issues I had that past doctors were clueless about that caused much of my infertility problems. He has assured me that he is going to do what it takes for me to be a Mother...explained things in a way I understood them...I had surgery because i had a blockage in my left tube well once he got in there he realized my other tube
they [ART Fertility Program of Alabama] were very affordable a lot better than I expected. and they worked with me if i had to pay out of pocket...from the moment walked into Dr. Longs office i felt very calm. it is a very welcoming environment...They [nurses] always called me by my name and have always been very welcoming. before and after my surgery they never hesitated making sure I was comfortable and answered any questions I had.
How was your experience with Cecil Long at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
I would say that as a patient he never made me feel like a patient but more like a close friend or as if I was a family member. when I would cry he made sure i had a tissue and a hug to follow to let me know we would get thru this. He has always been very through and explained things in a way I understood them. Back in February I had surgery because i had a blockage in my left tube well once he got in there he realized my other tube wasnt good either. so he went ahead and removed both of them. the first thing I remember coming out of surgery is asking what did he have to do someone said he had to remove both tubes I broke down, it was only a few minutes after that he was by my side explaining what he had done why he had done it and how much easier it was going to be for me to have a successful pregnancy. If are having trouble becoming pregnant and your present doctor had no explanation why it may be a little further to drive and cost a little more but to know why and know that you will be treated as a human making an appointment with Cecil Long is worth every penny. He is one of the most amazing men I've ever met.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Cecil Long at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
From day one Dr. Long has never made me feel like I was just a number. He has been very compassionate in every aspect including giving me his personal number if I ever needed him or had any questions. He has ran tests, diagnosed me and fixed issues I had that past doctors were clueless about that caused much of my infertility problems. He has assured me that he is going to do what it takes for me to be a Mother. I have complete faith and trust in him and know without a doubt that choosing him to be my doctor was the best decision I have made.

most of the time when you go into a doctor's office it feels like a doctor's office that always makes me uncomfortable well from the moment walked into Dr. Longs office i felt very calm. it is a very welcoming environment.

Dr. Allemand is very kind and listens to your concerns. While he is patient and seems like he cares, he doesn't tailor your care to your specific needs. He wanted me to pursue IVF after 2 IUI cycles (only on follistim and HCG) and one bad semen analysis after all the other SA's have been within normal limits. It concerned me that he was pushing IVF without doing ANY baseline bloodwork on my husband.
Very busy clinic [ART Fertility of Birmingham], but efficient. The longest I ever have waited was about 30 minutes. The front desk is amazing and very welcoming. The lab staff are top notch, they never miss a stick and they get it over with quickly:) It takes ALOT to get a nurse on the phone and normally takes a while for them to return your calls, but they answer all my questions when I do speak with them. Ultrasound techs and NPs perform ultrasounds and are very considerate and are sure to tell you exactly what they see. Communication is poor between the patient, NPs and my MD.

During visits (baselines, follicle ultrasounds) you do not see your MD and see a NP, which is ok, but you do not see the same NP each time. I felt like my treatment plan was not personalized for my specific needs.

I was told by a RN to not start progesterone after my last trigger shot and my MD assumed I was on it. When I told him I was told to not start it, he made it seem like it was no big deal, regardless of the fact that my progesterone tends to trend on the low end.

Any question he [Dr. Allemand] will answer honestly...I am 23 years old. He sat with my mom and I and explained everything that was going on. For once, someone actually understood and made me not feel crazy about the pain I was feeling. He went through options and was very caring through the entire process. I felt like he took me very seriously which I appreciated...He recommended IVF & surgery beforehand! I had my surgery April 12th. I meet with him again on the 25th to discuss beginning my IVF treatments! I’m only 23, And in my first 6 months of marriage IVF is a scary / expensive thought but he put me at ease that it was the best option for me to have a family even if we have to work more for it!
I just had an operation removing endometretomas / adhesions / etc [at ART Fertility Program of Alabama]...[nurses are] Very sweet. Very helpful. Answer any questions. Only complaint is you get a different nurse everytime and I feel like they never completely know you or your situation and having to re explain / Re ask same questions is frustrating...After blood work I had two nurses tell me two different things about blood work! Then I called another and she said everything was perfect. Not sure if it was a mix up or just misinterpretations or if I asked the questions wrong!

I had a hard time filling this out. I have yet to start my treatments so sorry if my answers are wrong or confusing. I have had a major endometriosis surgery at age 20. I have stage 4 endo! I’m constantly in pain, no sex life, not much quality of life. I got married 2 years later and instantly met with him! The endo is back, I had present tumors on ultra sounds. He recommended IVF & surgery beforehand! I had my surgery April 12th. I meet with him again on the 25th to discuss beginning my IVF treatments! The 1st month [with Dr. Allemand] we used clomid with trigger shot, 2nd-5th months we added added follistim to the plan to help produce more mature eggs. Then next step is to add another shot (can’t remember the name) and then IVF...I loved that he didn’t make me feel like I was too old to be wanting to have a baby. He made my husband and I feel at home discussing such intimate things with him. He has a great bed side manner and really cares about you as a patient.
I absolutely ADORE all of them [staff at ART Fertility Program of Alabama]. As soon as I walk in the door I am greeted by the best scheduling coordinator Ashley!!! Then to see Mildred or Lynn for bloodwork!!! Off to ultrasound with Brandi that most women dread but she just chats with you and it’s over before you know it. Then to see the nurse practitioners Tracey or Chasity. They are always both great at explaining what the next step is and Chasity is alway there for a big hug when you need it. Especially since I’m a crier!!! I love the staff!!!

We are doing IVF due to an inherited genetic disorder we do not want to pass to our children. Dr Honea listed to our story and supported us. She is very blunt and gives her honest opinion so if you can’t handle honesty she is not for you. For example, she is very honest about her opinion to not want to discard unused viable embryos.... Menopur/follistim, then monitored every other day until cetrotide was added. One embryos were 1.8cm HCG trigger shot 36hrs before retrieval. Her rationale was it was the same successful plan used my first cycle so why change.
They [the staff at ART Fertility Program of AL] are very efficient and all staff is wonderful. No one wastes your time which I appreciate. I’ve never waited longer than 15 minutes. Only negative is the clinic is older. It is however kept very clean.... Everyone on the staff has been so sweet and really makes you feel comfortable going through such an uncomfortable time. Even the lady who draws your blood is amazing. The ultrasound tech is such a sweetheart too! I love them all!

She [Dr. Kathryn Honea] also had to remove a large fibroid on my uterus that was causing me pain and maybe the cause of me not getting my periods... She would then start me on cycles of estrace, progesterone, and a round of metaformin because my blood glucose was extremely high and they thought that I might have PCOS...After about 2 years Dr. Honea came to the conclusion that I was pre-menapausal, and that I may not get my period again, but she continued wit the estrace and progesterone in order to build my lining for the donor eggs; because she said that would be our best option for having children.
The Birmingham nurses [at ART Fertility Program of Alabama] are the main points of contact, and are in charge of the nursing line. I don't get to talk to the nurses in Huntsville unless I schedule an appointment. I think that her nursing staff are pretty nice, but I would like to be able to speak directly with the nursing staff at her Huntsville office since I deal with them more often than the Birmingham nursing staff. Both nursing staff are very helpful.
How was your experience with Kathryn Honea (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
My experience as a patient with Dr. Honea has been pretty good. I think that she is very knowledgeable and I respect that she is easy to talk to. I really respect her that she has gone through a similar process to conceive her children, and that she was very understanding when we had to re-start our the process because my dad passed unexpectedly prior to us being the donor egg transfer; which put a lot of stress on our family. She makes you feel like you are not crazy for your feelings, and that you are not broken but just have to find a different way to become a mom. She has been our doctor for more than three years, and we would recommend her to other people. She has a personality that makes you feel comfortable and at ease, and makes you feel like become parents.
She makes me feel comfortable and at ease, and answers any questions that I might have. I really appreciate her honestly, and I really like the fact that she is spiritual as well. She has made my husband and I experience pretty good, and help answer our questions.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kathryn Honea (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
A piece of advice that I would give a patient coming to Dr. Honea would be to come with any questions that you may have. Don't be afraid to ask your questions, and don't think that any question you ask are weird or not right to ask. You want to make sure that you questions and concerns are addressed, and don't be afraid to ask again if you don't understand. Don't be afraid that your questions are stupid or that you may have asked them more than once.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kathryn Honea (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
I think I feel like a number sometime because I don't have a direct contact with her office. I have to call the nurses line, and then wait all day or even sometimes two days to hear from them. I think because her practice is so large that you feel like a number because there are some many patients. Also, with her main practice being in Birmingham; its hard a lot of the time to get in touch with her even though she has an office in Huntsville. Moreover, I am a patient at the Huntsville office. The staff at the Huntsville office are amazing, but I don't have direct contact with them if I have any questions, and everything is funneled through the Birmingham office, which makes it difficult. Sometimes, it feels like being a number because I don't have someone directly that I can call with questions. I think that if my care was designed specifically for me and they would stay in contact with me more, I wouldn't feel so much like a number.
Describe the protocols Kathryn Honea (retired) used in your cycles at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama) and their degree of success.
When I first started with Dr. Honea, I believe some of the first strategies that she used involved trying to get my period started. She used clomid, and birth control pills to try and get my period started, but I wasn't able to get my period started. She also had to remove a large fibroid on my uterus that was causing me pain and maybe the cause of me not getting my periods. After the surgery, she still continued to try and start my period, and I did get my period at least twice, but then it stopped. She would then start me on cycles of estrace, progesterone, and a round of metaformin because my blood glucose was extremely high and they thought that I might have PCOS. Moreover, when I would go for a uterine lining check, it was not thick enough, and my levels were not were they needed to be, so they would start the process over again. I continued on the cycles for about 2 years, switching my medicine out from estrace and progesterone to metaformin. After about 2 years Dr. Honea came to the conclusion that I was pre-menapausal, and that I may not get my period again, but she continued wit the estrace and progesterone in order to build my lining for the donor eggs; because she said that would be our best option for having children. However, I had to stop my cycles when my dad passed away unexpectedly in 2016, and I wasn't able to really start again until January of 2017. When I started treatment again, she also tried a round of Lupron shots for about 2 months in to get my lining and numbers up to par in order to get ready for the frozen egg transfer. She stopped the lupron shots because I still didn't get a period, but my lining was adequate and she ordered a SIS, and HSG back in October of 2017 which came back normal, as she wanted to make sure that my body would be ready to receive the donor eggs. I have continued to be on the metaformin, estrace, and progestrone for now until do select a donor from MyEggBank.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
I think that the Nursing staff at her Huntsville office are great. I don't have that much direct contact with the nursing staff at Dr. Honea main office in Birmingham. I think that her nursing staff in her Huntsville office are so nice and compassionate, and I really enjoy her staff there. The nurses at the Birmingham office I have only spoken to over the phone, and they seem pretty nice. The Birmingham nurses are the main points of contact, and are in charge of the nursing line. Describe your experience with Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
I would describe the ART of Program of Alabama strengths as follows:Knowledgeable and caring physicians and nurses; More than one location;Welcoming staff; Some weekend appointments offered;Lots of resources available regarding infertility; Answers your questions and helps you understand the processes involved with the ways you can become parents. Another strength would be the scheduling process.
I would say that some of their weaknesses would be not being able to email the office with questions, not being able to speak with nurses at your designated clinic directly, and not having a specific nurse assigned to you.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kathryn Honea (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
My insurance did not pay for any of my expenses with Dr. Honea; however, my husband's insurance did pick up some of the cost. Moreover, I was still responsible for payments that our insurace didnt cover such as medications such as Lupron that cost $179.00. Exams that would cost between $200 to $250. I have come out of pocket for medications, office visits/exams SIS, HSG, and the our psychological consult that we did prior to registering with MyEggBank. In total we have spent roughly $6,500 out of pocket.

We love Dr Honea. She has always treated me like a human being, not just another number. She is very experienced and compassionate. She has personally called us when problems have arose and when I found out I miscarried. She is straight forward and always tells us what our next step is... For IVF we decided to try the Shared Risk refund program where payment is due upfront and 3 IVF cycles are included. We paid $18,800 for 3 cycles, which doesn’t include the stim meds or monitoring office visits. The IVF cycles include egg retrieval and transfers and if ICSI is needed as well.
It [ART Fertility Program of AL] is a large clinic with multiple doctors so sometimes I have felt like just a number when traveling to the main Birmingham office. I understand they are busy, but I have encountered mistakes and miscommunication between myself and some of the staff members. It was pretty discouraging even with how much we love our doctor.

Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
I have been lucky to *mostly* speak with the same nurse, Lauren. However, at such a large practice I have had to speak to other nurses. I️ always feel way more comfortable just speaking with the same nurse because it feels more personal. I have come across some nurses that are not very compassionate and it feels like they’re just scooting me along or I have asked a stupid question. I’ve often told my husband that just because the nurses deal with so many patients everyday and have probably become custom to all of the weird questions, they should still try to show more compassion, sometimes the bluntness is a little harsh.

We started with an IUI and I️ think the cost was around $300. But we did a sperm freeze as well so I believe that was another $300. I don’t exactly remember how much the medicine cost.
We have had two egg retrievals so that means two rounds of shots each time costing around $1,400. Normally I pay $35-75 per office visit when an ultrasound is needed, which is every week after a positive pregnancy test is confirmed.
Describe Kathryn Honea (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
Dr Honea has strong opinions on multiple births. I have gathered because of my age that she prefers to transfer just one embryo at a time. After this miscarriage we may move onto two embryos next transfer. But she is very weary of multiples and the risks of carrying multiples.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
During our first IUI with the clinic we waited for ever because there was miscommunication with the different nurses and what we were doing that day. We had to make a quick decision whether we wanted to use my husbands fresh sperm or a frozen sample he had given before. The nurse called us when we had left the office and wanted an answer right then (we only had about 3 tiny vials of sperm) and weren’t sure what we wanted to do. More sperm samples meant driving 2 extra hours. We made it decision and called the nurse back only to speak with a different nurse. When the nurse practitioner finally came in to perform the IUI, we asked where the frozen sperm was and she said she wasn’t told we were using frozen sperm. I was furious. So the sperm we needed to use was still frozen and we had to wait an additional hour and a half in this tiny room for it to thaw. I think just with speaking with multiple nurses that day none of the information/decisions were relayed properly between nurses.

1st time we met [with Dr. Virginia Houserman] it was just to discuss what was going to happen. 1st IUI was unmedicated just monitor and trigger shot. Negative. So we had to see the dr again she said I have PCOS without the cysts that I don't ovulate on my own so she recommends letrazol was it's less likely to make me crazy. So IUI #2 we monitor and add letrazol days 5-10 trigger shot in office I ovulate! Everything looks great this time they do an ultrasound to show I ovaulated and everything looked great but again negative. So they tell me we are going to do the same thing over so IUI #3 monitor letrazol days 5-10 trigger shot in office only this time no ultrasound. And once again a negative.
They [ART Fertility Program of AL- Birmingham] are very kind and compassionate made an uncomfortable situation as comfortable as possible. Negatives would be you see so many different nurses you get lost. Sometimes they are so busy they forget things always question should i be getting this done as I was told I wouldn't have to pee in a cup one time then after I peed I had to pee in a cup! I feel like they could do more to make sure it's as successful as it can be I feel like I'm dishing out all this money and sometimes I got ultrasounds sometimes I didn't.
How was your experience with Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
She is always up front telling me you know you shouldn't be discouraged but then would say something optimistic behind it like I know your going to be a mother I just know it. Which was nice but also hard every time I got negative after.

1st time we met it was just to discuss what was going to happen. So they tell me we are going to do the same thing over so IUI #3 monitor letrazol days 5-10 trigger shot in office only this time no ultrasound. And once again a negative. So we go back to see the dr get told everything looks good on paper but because we use don't sperm we are ok to be more aggressive. So for IUI #4 we did letrazol days 3-7 then follistim shots till I my follicles were the right size then I triggered at home that night then went to the dr 36 hours later for Insemination . No ultrasound or anything this time and once again a negative!!! Now we are trying to raise money to try again.

Went in for my 3rd IUI missing work for this and was called on my way out to tell me I could t proceed with my IUI until both my partner and I had our yearly done so had to miss work another day to have it done. When we get there they tell my partner they didn't need to run any tests on her. thankfully as we waited for my blood work they realized the mistake and did her physical as well. This same day I was told to empty my bladder before the exam I said "o don't have to pee In a cup" nope I was told. I ended up having to pee In a cup for the lab. They were supposed to call in my progesterone I ended up having to call them and remind them to do it.
I felt that she [Dr. Houserman] was very open to answering our questions and addressing our concerns. She understood our frustrations and our emotions and gave us numerous options without making us feel overwhelmed. ... She also always did what was in our best interest, even if we felt like rushing things or taking things too slow. ... But if my ovaries were too large or I had cysts, she would make us wait a month.
I think their strengths is their team work and communication [ART Fertility]. They always worked together to keep the flow of the clinic going well. ... The nurses and nurse practitioner at the Montgomery office were great. They work very efficiently and always understood my time frame and respected that. ... Tracey Mendelson and the other nurses always answered all of my questions.
How was your experience with Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama)?
My experience with her was great. She always told us all of our options and never encouraged us to give up. She also always did what was in our best interest, even if we felt like rushing things or taking things too slow. And she never discouraged us from getting second opinions or talking to other people. She was secure in her knowledge but also knew her limits.

To not necessarily expect a lot of warm and fuzzies. She is super nice and very smart and compassionate. But she is not a “touchy felt” type, which just happened to work for my husband and I.

Describe the protocols Virginia Houserman (retired) used in your cycles at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama) and their degree of success.
We went through 5 rounds of IUIs and 2 rounds of IVF over the past 3 and a half years. Dr. Houserman seemed to find a good balance between aggressive and safe. She knew that we did not want to half do things, so she allowed us to keep increasing medications and the protocols when she felt like it would help. But if my ovaries were too large or I had cysts, she would make us wait a month.

I think their strengths is their team work and communication. They always worked together to keep the flow of the clinic going well. They never made us wait that long in the waiting room and always did things to use their time wisely.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Virginia Houserman (retired) at Alabama Fertility Specialists (formerly ART Fertility Program of Alabama).
Everything was very expensive because our insurance did not cover any testing or procedures. I don’t think they were necessarily better or worse than any other clinic or doctor. The medications and the procedures are what cost the most.
