Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Because she [Dr. Robertshaw] never rushes patients through appointments, things can sometimes go over -since I've certainly been the one prolonging things, I was more than happy to wait patiently for my turn, and she never rushed through my appointments to get "back on track" like other doctors do... all were frozen because during retrieval Dr. Robertshaw identified an issue that required surgery. Immediately after surgery I started estrogen to begin a frozen embryo transfer procedure...was very clear that a single embryo would probably be successful given my age and no history of failure to implant, and said that she'd recommend one embryo. Nevertheless, she recognized that we were a-ok with the possibility of twins (it's been 5 years... we figured we'd have 2 by now, anyway) and let us go for it.
All of the staff [at Bethesda Fertility Center] were incredibly knowledgeable and helpful, the facilities were clean and many of the offices and bathrooms were nicely decorated. They use an app to communicate treatment information and for "non-urgent" communication, and at first I thought it was maybe overkill, but I actually really enjoyed it -it gave me easy access to ask questions and especially when dosage instructions are changing daily, it was very handy...we got something like 20 eggs, which was expected from the estimates with the ultrasounds. 19 were mature. Because of my dude's morphology, we used ICSI to fertilize, and 16 ended up fertilizing. The clinic was clear that typically only half of fertilized eggs make it to blastocyst, and that they only freeze high quality embryos, but we ended up with 14 embryos.
How was your experience with Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
When we first met Dr. Robertshaw we were entering our 5th year of TTC, and Bethesda was our third clinic. We'd been to a huge clinic where I described most of my visits as "cattle calls", and to a smaller clinic where I still felt as though the doctor never really heard or understood me or my questions. Within minutes of meeting Dr. Robertshaw we knew that things would be different -she listened carefully and responded thoughtfully. Throughout treatment (1 cycle IVF) she let us have our way where we felt strongly about things and helped us make decisions when we were unsure. She never *ever* rushed through an appointment, and will always take the extra few minutes to answer every last question or to celebrate with good news.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Sometimes (but not always, maybe 10-20% of the time) you may have to wait a bit. Because she never rushes patients through appointments, things can sometimes go over -since I've certainly been the one prolonging things, I was more than happy to wait patiently for my turn, and she never rushed through my appointments to get "back on track" like other doctors do.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Dr. Robertshaw was the third doctor we saw. I showed up in her office with guns blazing, ready to skip all the niceties and get straight to the point. Right from the get-go she seemed to fully understand our experience, and she answered all of my questions thoughtfully. She didn't just treat me like a person, she treated me like an *intelligent* person with agency, never brushing off a single concern, never seeming distracted or hurried.
Describe the protocols Isela Robertshaw used in your cycles at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed) and their degree of success.
We went through one cycle of IVF. I used GonalF for ovarian stimulation and had regular ultrasounds during the cycle to check progress, then something-that-starts-with-a-C to induce ovulation. Then the egg retrieval -we got something like 20 eggs, which was expected from the estimates with the ultrasounds. 19 were mature. Because of my dude's morphology, we used ICSI to fertilize, and 16 ended up fertilizing. The clinic was clear that typically only half of fertilized eggs make it to blastocyst, and that they only freeze high quality embryos, but we ended up with 14 embryos. They all were frozen because during retrieval Dr. Robertshaw identified an issue that required surgery. Immediately after surgery I started estrogen to begin a frozen embryo transfer procedure, then injectable progesterone. My husband and I insisted on 2 embryos, even though Dr. Robertshaw was very clear about the likelihood of twins. We had a positive blood test, then another to confirm, and we had two teeny heartbeats on ultrasound a couple weeks later. We've been discharged to an ob. So in conclusion, one round of IVF, one pregnancy with twins resulting, 12 embryos remaining in storage.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed). (Assigned nurse: Lynzie)
Lynzie was very organized and an excellent communicator. She was a kind and warm face to interact with throughout the experience. Though everyone we interacted with was kind and professional, it was very nice to see the same face consistently.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
I've met my insurance out-of-pocket maximum, which is 5500, plus another 3000 or so in medication. This is for a round of IVF with one FET, and includes required diagnostic tests such as the SIS, as well as an MRI with contrast and an outpatient surgery.

Dr. Robertshaw was extremely kind, compassionate, and helpful. She was understanding and answered all of my questions, especially when I was worried or had concerns. I felt very supported. I would have liked to continue treatment there, but they didn’t know what to try next with my poor outcomes...extremely kind and helpful, and so supportive knowing it is such a sensitive and delicate. They were very in tune that it was difficult emotionally, especially when not getting the hoped for outcome.
This [Bethesda Fertility Center] is a smaller and very personal clinic. I always felt like a human here and like my journey mattered. At my very first appt, I will never forget one of the nurses telling me that she would always be there for me, no matter where my journey may leave...[nurse] Tiffany was assigned to me and seriously was like my guardian angel. She could not have been more kind and compassionate and loving, especially when I sat there crying about poor results.

I have diminished ovarian reserve. I started on Clomid, then shots of Lupron, along with other injections. My body did not respond extremely well and at the time of retrieval, we thought I’d get 5 eggs. In the end only 3 were retrieved and one was able to be frozen. Several months later, we tried to start a cycle with Estrace priming, in which I grew a cyst. A few weeks after that, we tried another cycle, but again my eggs were not growing and it seemed like I wouldn’t really get any. At that point, I was told (very kindly), that they did not have any other ideas and that I could get a second opinion.

When trying to get my charts sent to another clinic for a second opinion, it was taking over a month (ended up having to cancel my second opinion appt bc they hadn’t gotten my charts yet), so I ended up having to just go pick them up in person myself to ensure I had them in time for my appt.

She [Dr. Kasey Reynolds] was kind but my care was absolutely not individualized. Concerns were ignored...I was told if we kept going, we'd "do the same protocol over and over until I got pregnant". I felt like we wasted our embryos based off a simple issue that was not being addressed. She was kind, but I wish after the first failed cycle she would have done more for us and not failed us...My labs should have been followed closely and they weren't.
[Bethesda Fertility Center] Communication is awful! Financial coordinator was not friendly or helpful when I needed help. Front desk was always nice. I needed assistance and it took over a month for the financial coordinator to get back with me after calling and messaging multiple times...[nurse] Did not communicate with doctor regarding my concerns. Blew those off. Acted like knew the answers to my problems but really it should have been ran by the doctor. Did a great job explaining how to give meds. Fast to respond on portal. Overall kind person. Just did not feel like my care was looked out for.

Look at each patient individually. May be those that don't respond to meds, look at other options. Don't keep trying the same thing over and over.

I did two medicated cycles and an ERA. I did not respond well to all 3 of these. I should have been offered a modified natural cycle after the second cycle didn't respond well. Something needed to be changed and it wasn't. My labs should have been followed closely and they weren't.

I had low estrogen levels that resulted in 2 failed FETs. Another clinic said they would have never transferred with my issues with lining and low estrogen. They refused to acknowledge this and told me they'd do the same thing over and over until I got pregnant. Not individualized care and after two cycles, didn't see the issue and offer to do something to change outcome.

Dr. Robertshaw, is compassionate. She is not only educated, she listens to her patients. I never felt rushed when I was with her. I met with her several times before making a decision, she did not put any pressure on me, each time, as it was a lot of money and a big decision to do on my own. But I cannot say enough about the person she is and the doctor she is. I know God sent me her!
[Bethesda Fertility Center] Clinic is great, it is an inviting place. You can call the office at any time, and have the most professional staff member work with you and everyone there is so delightful. It really made the visits easy. The waiting area is very clean, as well as the clinic. Everyone was super inviting and professional...I was in great hands with Dr. Robertshaw's other staff members. All of the nurses at the office were fantastic during the retrieval process as well.

To ask as many questions as you want. She will answer all of them and calm your fears if you have any.

The first time I met Dr. Robertshaw, she spent over an hour with me. Talking about the process and listening to my fears, answering all my questions. I visited three different fertility doctors in Cincinnati and she was the only one who took the time to treat me like a human and really get to know my story.
Describe the protocols Isela Robertshaw used in your cycles at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed) and their degree of success.
I went through two cycles. The drugs were based on the fact that I was doing this on my own and she had a lot of care for me in that sense. She always explained what they would do and why. The first cycle, we tried Estrace, but I wasn't ready, so she canceled it and the next go around, we tried Estrace and Viagra, and my uterus was ready to go!

Lynzie was my main nurse from day one. When Lynzie was out, I was in great hands with Dr. Robertshaw's other staff members. All of the nurses at the office were fantastic during the retrieval process as well. But Lynzie Hogan was my nurse over the last year a half. She is the best. She always got back to me, she talked to me when I needed her to, and she walked me through everything. I would not be where I am in this process without her. She is just simple wonderful!

The best part about Bethesda and Dr. Robertshaw and her staff is that they knew my situation. I did some appointments locally, but I had to relocate for a job so they worked with me and scheduling my monitoring appointments in North Carolina. They were fast with orders and results. It was quite the process for them, but it made such a difference for me to have them care so much and keep me as a patient.

If I could send everyone to Dr. Robertshaw, I would without hesitation. Dr. Robertshaw is kind, warm, and extremely knowledgeable. I always felt confident in my care and my plan. This speaks volumes about Dr. Robertshaw during IVF because IVF can be stressful to navigate. My husband and I will be returning to Dr. Robertshaw the next time we want to grow our family...empathetic and also was ready to celebrate alongside us
This clinic [Bethesda Fertility Center] is full of strengths as a result of the amazing team they have. From the moment you walk in you feel greeted and welcomed. I knew exactly who to contact for different types of questions. The online platform they use was easy to navigate. I was provided with clear communication and exceptional care. My only advice is to choose this clinic for your fertility needs...I was provided with a clear breakdown of costs before starting our IVF cycle.

I felt like Dr. Reynolds treated me as a friend. Obviously I was her patient but she didn’t make it feel that way. I felt like I could tell her anything and she would understand and help me through it...I have a lot of anxiety and after conversations with her I immediately feel better. She is super accessible and easy to get in touch with for questions and concerns...she changed my protocol for my second round and it was way more successful...
I’ve had excellent experiences with the staff [at Bethesda Fertility Center]. I have worked with Patty [nurse] for all of my 3 rounds so far and we have become good friends. She is super helpful and does her job well...It’s a beautiful and welcoming office. All of the staff is nice. Everyone is helpful...I wish was different but isn’t a huge deal is that payments could be broken up into increments...
How was your experience with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Dr. Reynolds is one of the best physicians I have ever seen. She cares so much and at every appointment I feel valued and listened to. She consistently goes above and beyond for me. And I feel like she is a friend. She is funny and empathic and the only doctor I will trust with my fertility journey. I have a lot of anxiety and after conversations with her I immediately feel better. She is super accessible and easy to get in touch with for questions and concerns.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Always feel like you can trust her. Even if something feels personal or that you might get judged for feeling a certain way or believing a certain thing, just know she is trustworthy and understanding. I’ve told her more than she probably wanted to know but I was never met with judgement or anything other than compassion.

Describe the protocols Kasey Reynolds Marelić used in your cycles at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed) and their degree of success.
My first round wasn’t successful because there was unexpected cysts in my follicles. Knowing this she changed my protocol for my second round and it was way more successful. I did a long lupron protocol where I took lupron for 10 days before even starting my IVF meds. I took Gonal F and Menopur every night. Then I also did a double trigger shot before retrieval on my second round which also could have helped with the successful outcome. My first retrieval was only 4 eggs and then 4 embryos and none of the embryos made it to day 7. The second round we got 8 eggs, 5 embryos, and 3 of the embryos made it and are now frozen.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed). (Assigned nurse: Patty)
I’ve had excellent experiences with the staff. I have worked with Patty for all of my 3 rounds so far and we have become good friends. She is super helpful and does her job well. Sometimes I have to remind her of things but that’s not a flaw in my mind. IVF is so crazy and hectic and it’s totally understandable if little things get lost in the mix.
Describe your experience with Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
The clinic has been wonderful overall. It’s a beautiful and welcoming office. All of the staff is nice. Everyone is helpful. Something I wish was different but isn’t a huge deal is that payments could be broken up into increments. IVF is expensive and it’s a large chunk of money to be paid all at once. Breaking it up into payments could be really helpful to some people. But I do understand why that isn’t always possible.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
Egg Retrieval, embryo making, and PGT biopsies was a total of $13,870. One year of cryo storage is 250 for first year then it’s $250 every six months. We also pay for storage for sperm and I forget the exact cost but I think it’s around the same, like $500 a year or so. IVF meds were supplied from a separate pharmacy. The total I spent at the clinic for one cycle of IVF was $15,889.12. I had insurance coverage for some of the ultrasounds, blood work, and exams but no coverage for anything else.
Describe Kasey Reynolds Marelić's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
I don’t think she is opposed to multiple embryo transfers. It would definitely depend on each patient’s situation though.

My experience with Dr. Robertshaw was very positive. She explained to me every step so that I could understand and was always upbeat and personable. She got back to me via phone call or email with any questions or concerns typically within a few hours. I had a great experience...We ended up using 4 IUI's all together but her plan says, if you don't get pregnant after these times then you need to think of possibly doing IVF. The last time we did the clomid, shot and then had an U/S it showed I had 6 eggs available. She said, "if this doesn't work, I strongly suggest an IVF procedure". I would love to do IVF but with it not being 100% becoming pregnant then its hard to spend the money for IVF especially during hard times.
The IUI was $450, the shot was $100 the meds were $70 [at Bethesda Fertility Center]...And then office visit was a couple hundred dollars or more. The whole procedure/appointment was roughly 900-1000 each time...They take the time and listen to you and will respond to you quickly...They will help you in any way that they can and explain it to you in the best possible way (including drawing pictures)

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
I would just listen to what she has to say and make sure you ask questions if you don't understand.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
She was so compassionate and really was very informative and was upfront and honest. She put a great game plan into place and basically said, let's do 3 rounds of IUI but then you have to decide if you want to keep going or do IVF. She said IVF would be my best option considering how many eggs I had in reserve. Unfortunately, the IVF procedures is way out of my league as far as being able to pay for this sort of treatment when it isn't guaranteed.

[Dr. Reynolds] was amazing...she took the time to make sure I was comfortable, and printed me out a copy of what she could see. She even change my course of treatment to be specific to what was going on with my body. She is gentle and a very wise doctor...will change the course of treatment that is best for you. She truely made me feel comfortable in the situation that I had sprung on me with cancer treatments and needing to make a choice to save my eggs or not.
The Staff here [at Bethesda Fertility Center] is AMAZING, I suggest it to anyone who is even thinking about doing IVF to set up at least a consultation, I did not feel pushed in making a choice to do it. They give you both the negatives and positives and will answer any of your questions and make sure you make the choice that is right for you!...No weakness this staff is amazing. they will answer any and all questions and make a treatment plan that is best for you. I did not feel pushed into anything. They are great at making you feel not alone, or stupid for any questions that you ask.

She [Dr. Robertshaw] took all the time in the world to answer my questions and to make sure I was making the right choice for me, which had a huge impact on me and let me know I was in the right hands. I didn't feel pressured at all, and she got me in the next day know my situation. She is an amazing doctor...Dr. Robershaw and Dr. Reynolds are both amazing, each one treated me as a doctor and helped me with the situation I was going threw, they never made me feel like I was stuck in anything and that the choice was ultimately mine...pulled me in and let me know how soon I would have to start treatments based off of my situation, from there she was on hand for questions at anytime. Dr. Reynolds did my surgery, and changed my trigger shots and surgery date when it was discovered I was producing eggs and they were growing at a good rate. She really paid attention to my body and what it was doing and made a plan that was suited for me.
Every single one of the nurses here [at Bethesda Fertility Center] are beyond wonderful and really care about their patients. Lynzie Hogan, went beyond and above for all the questions I had, and answered all of my calls (bless her for doing so). Liz Wilson helped me find funding to help discount the medications when my insurances backed out. Colleen Brooks is unbelievable at her job and is one of the nicest human beings I have ever met, she really cares. My insurances has been giving them a hard time and she has been going back and forth on the process and letting me know updates. She is beyond wonderful.

[Dr. Isela Robertshaw] takes her time during appointment. She listens to all concerns and addresses them. She will tell you what she thinks and then will listen to how you feel and think. I never feel rushed...takes time to ask how you are doing and give support...Letrazole mostly, ovidrel, and either timed intercorse or iui (depending on if spouse was available to get to clinic). We did this off and on for over a year
I believe Dr Robertshaw is extremely compassionate and caring & I believe the staff [at Bethesda Fertility Center] to be as well. I have had no issues getting appointments but if I had to give anything a negative it would be my wait time occasionally has been long but that’s my only complaint. I would recommend this clinic to my sister or dearest friend...If you have to leave a message even on a weekend they would get back with you usually that day or the next.

I have never experienced a doctor like Dr. Robertshaw. She was so sincere and compassionate and took her time to really explain everything to me and my husband during our almost 3 year battle with infertility. In that time, she never once made me feel like a number or a science experiment. She even personally called me a couple times to check in, and even answered some questions on a weekend after I was released from her care.
The [Bethesda Fertility Center] nursing staff was incredible. They were very understanding and compassionate. My two nurses I had for my retrieval’s and transfers were beyond wonderful, I’m so thankful for them...Each IUI was $350 and trigger shot was $100...Their communication was great. No matter what member of staff I spoke to, I felt my questions were always answered very quickly, whether I received a phone call from them or an email, it was always received in a timely manner. I truly don’t know any weaknesses the clinic had, my experience from start to finish was wonderful.
How was your experience with Isela Robertshaw at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Struggling with infertility is a scary feeling, and I felt very alone; but from the very first appointment meeting Dr. Robertshaw, I finally felt like someone understood my pain. She immediately jumped in and had blood work done and tests ran, and a plan to move forward. Any setback I had during all my rounds of treatment, she always showed warmth and compassion and I will forever be grateful to her. I’ve never experienced doctor care like hers and I don’t think I ever will again. Infertility is awful, but having her as my doctor made it so much easier.

I can’t remember all of them but during a round of ivf we decided to do an era test (because of previous losses) which indicated I would need an extra day of progesterone, we also added recurrent loss blood work. (Through this I found I have the MTHFR gene mutation) Besides the gene mutation, nothing showed up on my blood work that would indicate a problem, such as a blood clotting disorder. She decided to try to keep me on blood thinners and do an immune protocol for my 4th Ivf transfer and it worked. I now have a very happy and healthy baby boy, who just turned a year old!

Dr. Reynolds is a pleasant and positive doctor. I appreciated she didn't dwell on my age. If she referred to my age as a factor, it was more explaining the influence of age on eggs and not spoken of negatively...I noticed in my planned care in the app, progesterone was listed as a medication, yet I was not prescribed it. I was upset by this and Dr. Reynolds was apologetic and said it was an error that it was listed as one of my medications, but we could try it in the next round. I appreciated the apology, but can't help wondering if it was an oversight.
Very friendly and personable staff [at Bethesda Fertility Center]. I'm unsure of how organized they are because I've been asked questions that didn't apply to me. Or I needed to ask, so... what do I do next? I didn't receive a solid plan of action, a "road map" on what was to happen. I was given the next instructions after the previous step was done...SIS: $1,080.00 (not covered by insurance). IUI: $215. Exams which may or may not have included ultrasounds, but often did ranged from $190-$300 with IUI included in a few.
How was your experience with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Dr. Reynolds is a pleasant and positive doctor. I appreciated she didn't dwell on my age. If she referred to my age as a factor, it was more explaining the influence of age on eggs and not spoken of negatively. In the beginning, communication between her and the staff was off. In my visit before IUI, she wasn't in the office, so we saw Dr. Robertshaw. The staff spoke to us as if we were planning timed intercourse. Later, when the IUI did not result in a positive pregnancy test, I noticed in my planned care in the app, progesterone was listed as a medication, yet I was not prescribed it. I was upset by this and Dr. Reynolds was apologetic and said it was an error that it was listed as one of my medications, but we could try it in the next round. I appreciated the apology, but can't help wondering if it was an oversight. Overall, it felt I was being moved through the motions. Trying round and round after IUI, and when none worked, there were just shrugged shoulders as to why it didn't work. Looking back, I wonder why I had no hormone testing (aside from checking estrogen), no discussion into the supplements I was taking or should take, no discussion of diet. From what I know now, I could have been more of an advocate for myself and asked for more answers before going for another round of IUI.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Educate yourself on factors that cause infertility: hormones, thyroid, etc. Be an advocate for yourself. I have a history of endometriosis and not once in being examined or in ultrasounds, was it an issue or even spoken of. Write down your concerns and questions so you don't forget. Dr. Reynolds is very nice, so ask away! Document visits, meds, and procedures in a calendar that you can refer to. (And if you're not already doing so, keeping track of your cycle in an app is very helpful.) These clinics are juggling a lot of patients, so keep your own records you don't have to dig for.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
The doctors and staff were friendly and pleasant, so I felt like a human. As every IUI passed with no positive pregnancy test and no explanation, no red flags, I felt I was moving through a process without any in depth examination or questioning into why no IUI worked.
Describe the protocols Kasey Reynolds Marelić used in your cycles at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed) and their degree of success.
After the first consultation, I had an ultrasound and Saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS). Both showed no signs of any problems. The first three IUIs seemed standard: Clomid and trigger shots. Progesterone was taken two of the three of these IUIs. None resulted in a positive pregnancy test. Before the 4th IUI, it was discovered I had a cyst on one of my ovaries. I was put on birth control for a week to minimize it. Then the 4th IUI continued with Clomid and trigger shot, then progesterone afterwards. No positive pregnancy test. Over the four IUIs the dosage of the trigger shot changed.

Progesterone was listed as my medication in the clinic app, yet I left my visit without anyone telling me about it or calling it into my pharmacy. Someone entered that information for me into the app, so why wasn't it in my chart to follow through on it? Do they enter things into the app and then don't bother paying attention it?

Bethesda is a small facility that has a boutique feel. Since we started going back in July 2018, I think they have started taking on more patients and are getting overwhelmed. ... I also found out I was allergic to Lupron, I've literally had to remind them every single time we write up new protocol. I feel like these are things that should be easily seen and documented. Dr. Reynolds has been open to new ideas and is never against trying new things. She answers every single question we come in with and never makes you feel rushed with time.
How was your experience with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Dr. Reynolds is an outstanding person. While we have not yet had success with IVF, we did a lot of research and felt that Dr. Reynolds most closely fit what we were looking for. Her insight and thoughtfulness made me feel comfortable every step of the way. Even when things did not work out, we never thought of going in another direction.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Be upfront with her and do not be afraid to ask questions if you have them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Dr. Reynolds was always so kind and welcoming when we were in her office. She knew little facts each time and would recall things I've told her at previous appointments. This was important to me because I felt like she actually remembered me as a human and not just a number. She also was very heartfelt each time things did not work. Always answered communication within 24 hours.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed). (Assigned nurse: Patty)
My primary nurse, Patty, has been amazing. She did have a knee injury and we were reassigned to another nurse and it was a nightmare. Some of the nurses are really great, others are very out of touch and treat you like a number.
Describe your experience with Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
Bethesda is a small facility that has a boutique feel. Since we started going back in July 2018, I think they have started taking on more patients and are getting overwhelmed. The nurses can get confused easily and sometimes the protocol they give does not always match what Dr. Reynolds would say. I would make the nurses go back and double check everything.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
To this point we have spent $32,000 on our fertility journey. (that includes our next and final transfer) We were able to use WinFertility to help pay for some of the costs. I will say, check all pharmacies for prescriptions, do not just assume the nurses know the best places.
Describe Kasey Reynolds Marelić's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
The communication with the nurses is very difficult. There is not always a strong and clear line of information. Also, the billing situation at Bethesda has been a disaster at times.

Dr. Reynolds made us feel like she genuinely cared about the outcome of our treatments. She acknowledged all of our concerns very warmly and patiently and never made us feel like we had too many questions or that she didn’t have time to answer us. ... The clinic [Bethesda Fertility Center] offers an app that was an amazing way to communicate with all the staff involved in my treatment. I was also able to track what came next on the app as well. How was your experience with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Dr Reynolds very carefully took her time to explain the aspects of infertility and more specifically what our struggles meant for our chances of conceiving. She gave us all our options and allowed us to make an informed decision on the route we wanted to take. She didn’t try to persuade us to go one way or the other. She was able to express what we should expect from our first iui cycle but still gave us hope that even if it was not successful she was very confident that we would be able to conceive.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Ask as many questions as you need to in order to fully understand all your options.

Describe the protocols Kasey Reynolds Marelić used in your cycles at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed) and their degree of success.
At my consultation appointment we got right down to business. Dr Reynolds performed a quick transvaginal ultrasound to check out the lining of my uterus and my ovaries. She also ordered bloodwork to check my overall health and hormone levels. The results came back pretty quickly and she was able to order a repeat of one of the labs that she was concerned about. For my first cycle we decided to try a medicated iui. Based on my labs she started me off on a pretty high dose of clomid (100mg) per day for 5 days starting day 3 of my cycle. Midway she asked that I come in for a SIS ultrasound which was quite painful. My ovaries and eggs were checked at this appointment as well. After the ultrasound we decided that I should do my ovidrel trigger shot because I had several follicles that were ready and was nearing ovulation. 36 hours later I went back in for my iui. It wasn’t very quick and just a little painful because of the position of my uterus.

Dr. Reynolds took the time to listen to my history and all concerns that previous doctors dismissed. She’s very knowledgeable and confident in her abilities. I always felt like I was receiving the best care possible...She did weigh in with her opinion, but said the decision to transfer 1 or 2 embryos would ultimately be up to my husband and I.
The [Bethesda Fertility Center] nurses were very kind and explained all the medications very thoroughly. They always provided lab results in a very timely manner and respond very fast using their communications app...This clinic was great about getting everything approved through my insurance company. I didn’t have to contact my insurance company at all. The billing clerk isn’t very warm but she usually returned my calls in 24 hours. I have never waited more than 10 minutes in the waiting room.

For my only egg retrieval, I was given an antagonist protocol. I began with birth control to suppress my ovaries and shrink a cyst. For nine days, I took 200iu of Gonal-F and 1 vial of menopur. I took 250mcg of Cetrotide to keep my body from ovulating before the egg retrieval. Two days before the retrieval surgery, I triggered with 10000 IU of hCG. I had 19 eggs retrieved, 12 of which were mature. The eggs were fertilized using ICSI and by day 5, I had 7 blastocysts. During the time frame between retrieval and transfer, I took Medrol for 5 days and began the Progesterone in oil injections. We transferred two AA day 6 embryos and had the remaining 5 cryopreserved. Only one implanted, and we gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

4 rounds of cookie or femera with my OB then 2 IuI with Dr. Reynolds that weren’t successful so we moved directly into IVF. Luprolide protocol didn’t go well so we canceled the cycle. 2nd cycle used antagonist protocol and I got 10 mature follicles with 8 fertilizing. 2 enbryos made it to day 5 so we transferred both. Conceived and misscarried around 6.5 weeks. 3rd round starting soon which we will do endo scratch and levenox injections in addition to the same protocol- praying this one works!
[Bethesda Fertility Center is] Always on time, rarely have to wait. Good to return calls in the amount of time they tell you. Organization with billing and finances are a little chaotic depending on the situation but I hear that’s too common for fertility offices... 1st nurse I was assigned to was very busy and quick to respond though emails but didn’t always answer every question I had. This next round of IVF I am assigned to another nurse who is fantastic! Responds quickly, even calls me to check in before my cycle without prompting. She called in my meds early so I didn’t have to worry about them. Love her!
How was your experience with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
She is extremely knowledgeable and has data and studies to back up each of her treatments suggestions for my particular situation. She explains things well to myself who needs details and comforted and my husband who is factual and wants all the data. She is very upbeat and to the point. She’s excited about what she’s doing and encouraging which is definitely needed on this long hard journey.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
She is the only RE I’ve consulted with. I saw her partner, Dr. Robertshaw who is also fantastic and highly recommended, but Dr. Reynolds just got me right away. She made a plan of attack and encouraged us to make decisions together but was ready to move forward as aggressively as we wanted. Every time we talk she encourages me and tells me this will happen, which is what I need to keep moving forward!

Make sure you go into it knowing all the possible outcomes. I didn't know there was something called a guarentee program and I feel like I got screwed. I took out a personal loan to afford 1 round of IVF and now that that didn't work I have to figure out how to come up with a ton more money.

I started with taking birth control. Then had my baseline ultrasound. Things looked good so I started my injectable medications and did that for 9 days. I wasn't growing very many follicles about half way in so she upped my dosage and I started to respond better. I triggered on day 10 and then had my retrieval on day 12. Another doctor completed that procedure as Robertshaw was out of town. I was updated the day after retrieval, day 3 and day 5 as to how everything was progressing. I had a 5 day fresh transfer of 2 embryos. And then found out that none of my other embryos made it to freeze. I did not get pregnant and was left heartbroken and broke.

She [Dr. Kasey Reynolds] did an aggressive treatment and really upped my meds (gonal f, menopur, lupron) to try to get as many as we could but even with the increase in meds, they were only seeing around 6 follicles...We reset and did a menopur only cycle and it worked so much better! We got 13 (the most I’ve ever had). 11 fertilized, we did a day 3 transfer bc the majority weren’t looking great. They didn’t take and the rest had arrested by day 5 again.
The nursing staff [at Bethesda Fertility Center] is great. You can tell they all really enjoy their jobs and care about you...Our IVF cycle cost around $10k, which was after a military discount...I don’t have any complaints. The atmosphere is happy and pleasant. Even the way they decorate is homey and not clinical. I loved how they handled retrieval day, it was very seamless and when I did have some high blood pressure afterwards, 3 nurses hung out with me until it came down. Their biggest strength is the people working there.

My body doesn’t respond as it should, so even though my levels were normal, I wasn’t producing many follicles at our old clinic. She did an aggressive treatment and really upped my meds (gonal f, menopur, lupron) to try to get as many as we could but even with the increase in meds, they were only seeing around 6 follicles, which made no sense! She canceled that round (which I’m very thankful for bc I didn’t want to go through a retrieval for only 6 since our embryos always arrest by day 5.) We reset and did a menopur only cycle and it worked so much better! We got 13 (the most I’ve ever had). 11 fertilized, we did a day 3 transfer bc the majority weren’t looking great. They didn’t take and the rest had arrested by day 5 again. By the time we had done this with her we were at the end of our 4th IVF attempt (having done 2 rounds at a different clinic.) So with her advising us, we have decided to stop trying via IVF.

Dr Reynolds has supported our treatment from the start. She worked with us, our schedule, our finances to help us understand the prognosis and what would be next. She never 'did the same' again if it didn't work the first time, she always adjusted the plan of action.... Antagonist protocol. I wasn't as strong of a responder as expected so we had to crank up the drugs and go an extra day- but we ended up with 17 eggs retrieved. For both FETs we did lupron with progresterone - after a body rash during the FET, we added/adjusted meds for the next FET.
I have worked with several nurses [at Bethesda Fertility Center], did have a primary nurse during IVF, but not one prior to that. After the first primary nurse, when we did an FET, we got another nurse. I was okay with that - but I did have to communicate to the practice I felt that nurse could be better with responding/communicating to me and turning around schedules faster.

This clinic is great, they are on time most all the time, only have had to wait occasionally. It's private and you feel comfortable going in. They have made it very spa like so you do not feel it's so doc office like. The one weakness, which I understand, is that they are not on an electronic medical record, so you do not get to see your results online, do not have appt reminders electronically - that is something to get used to.

Just a delay in some ordering of drugs. They were not immediate, but it's confusing when you have several mail order and one local pharmacy for the patient to keep it straight, so it is nice when they are on top of it.

She [Dr. Kasey Reynolds] takes the time to explain the risks and connected me with a trusted specialty doctor for my damaged tube surgery... I have two surgeries last year to remove scar tissue and one damaged fallopian tube...Interactions with her can seem impersonal at times when they are busy and she was quick to suggest IVF after my surgeries...Very caring and passionate about what she does as a fertility doctor...
One nurse [at Bethesda Fertility Center] told me very coldly, after our three month break, we were no longer patients...and that I needed to go to my gynecologist for testing on why I became unexpectedly dizzy and fell. Another nurse, office manager and Dr. Reynolds all reached out to me to apologize for the comment. However, they discounted it saying she did not mean it that way...IUI was $400/each, ovulation trigger shots were $100, IVF was going to be appx. $8,000/each.
How was your experience with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Very caring and passionate about what she does as a fertility doctor. She takes the time to explain the risks and connected me with a trusted specialty doctor for my damaged tube surgery. Interactions with her can seem impersonal at times when they are busy and she was quick to suggest IVF after my surgeries. This was not the intent or my expectation, per previous discussions, as based on the results of my 1st surgery I was told we would be able to continue with IUI with more success.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Ask for THEIR practices' success rates not the general medical success rates which are quoted
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
I loved Dr. Kasey Reynolds as my fertility doctor. However, I feel like this clinic may be overwhelmed with too many patients which made me feel more like a number than a human most of the time. I have two surgeries last year to remove scar tissue and one damaged fallopian tube. Afterwards, they seemed too quick to suggest IVF in my opinion. Office staff actually told me I was no longer a patient after taking a 3 month break...
Describe the protocols Kasey Reynolds Marelić used in your cycles at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed) and their degree of success.
Average dose of Letrozole was prescribed to help me ovulation consistently month-to-month initially. This was bumped up slightly prior to my first IUI. After the surgeries and my two failed IUIs, she wanted to prescribe me clomid over July 4th weekend although my insurance would not pay for it. Later I found out that it would have only been a few bucks out of pocket AFTER countless hours on the phone with the insurance company vs. doctors vs. pharmacy battles and ending up missing that cycle's opportunity. That is when we decided to take our break.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).

Describe your experience with Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
Weaknesses: can treat you like a number, do not have a support system aligned with the clinic like others in the area do, quote medical success rates instead of their own practices' success rate, some nurses can be rude and cold in their tones and words Strengths: very passionate doctor Dr. Reynolds, loves what she does, willing to take a few extra minutes to comfort you after hearing bad news, will refer to you the best trusted docs she knows if additional surgeries are needed
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kasey Reynolds Marelić at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
IUI was $400/each, ovulation trigger shots were $100, IVF was going to be appx. $8,000/each. I have no insurance coverage for fertility specific care.
Describe Kasey Reynolds Marelić's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
No preferences. She stated the facts as black and white with statistics.
What specific things went wrong at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
They did not tell me that the clomid would only cost a few dollars out of pocket, if necessary, which resulted in me missing that cycle's window.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dr. Thie. I am confident that she wants the best for us. Before my first egg retrieval, she actually called my cell phone the night before to leave a message of encouragement in light of my estradiol results and to let me know that she was thinking of me. This is one case where bedside manner is really important given the emotional strain of infertility. That said, as a DOR patient, I am not always sure she is up on the latest treatment or protocol options.
They tried to charge for for traditional egg fertilization as well as for ICSI and I caught this. I asked if we could continue to try to get pregnant in our own during estrogen priming and was told yes, but later learned the Cetrotide I was taking could end a pregnancy if one had started (I would have abstained knowing this). They called me twice to tell me my IVF was unsuccessful and did not realize they had already called. I did not receive a report on day 3 from the embryologist as expected and went to transfer with no information. Again, this was all the Bethesda Fertility Clinic, not Dr. Thie's private practice. The nurses I rated so favorably were from her private practice, where I usually go. I would not Rae the Bethesda Fertility Center's nurses so highly.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Thie at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
Be prepared to wait and call the clinic to see if they are on time or not. If you don't want to wait to see your doctor, she is the wrong one. However, you are waiting because she gives each patient the time needed and will do the same with you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Thie at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed)?
The entire staff knows my name (incidentally, I go to Dr. Thie's private practice, she only does IVF retrieval and transfer at the Bethesda Fertility Center, and I would answer closer to a number for them). Dr. Thie listens to my questions, has an open mind, and spends time with me.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Bethesda Fertility Center (closed).
Their empathy and experience. The head nurse, Cindy, is exceptional.

She [Dr. Robertshaw] is a very compassionate doctor with great bed side manner. Also, takes the time to ask questions and explains things . Also, very receptive to emails and responses are quick. She details the plan, provides treatment options, without trying to steer one way or the other...She also provides treatment options and doesn’t try to push straight to one set type of treatment. Her level of care is great too, shows confide in finding a solution. For us it’s 2ndary infertility, MFi, so trying to make the pieces of the puzzle fit again to be able to conceive.
Compassionate and good communication. Also flexible I need certain hours for ultrasounds for monitoring and they [Bethesda Fertility Center] worked around my work schedule to accommodate. Also, get back with you for your results quickly without having to follow up yourself...So far with all diagnostic work and one round of femara and trigger after insurance $1,000. I believe cost of ivf is between $10,000-20,000

First cycle [with Dr. Isela Robertshaw]- fresh transfer with ICSI - hyperstimulated with 50+eggs, two day 3 embryos transferred Second cycle- frozen transfer with ICSI, hyperstimulated 50+ eggs, two day 3 transferred...Great bedside manner, you really felt like she was on your team and felt everything you were feeling...I feel like she didn’t adjust enough after the 1st failed cycle. I feel like the second was rushed. I don’t think my meds were lowered enough. Each cycle I hyperstimulated. I believe the high number of eggs really effected the quality of them.
[Billing at Bethesda Fertility Center is a] major weakness. We would pay monthly and she would forget we paid. Price kept changing. They also seem very unorganized. But their major strength is their nurses!!!! So wonderful. Their waiting room was always jammed packed...Nurses here are AMAZING expeciialy heather. Heather was so warm and compassionate and the best at explaining everything.

First she [Kasey Reynolds] had me take birth control pills for 4 months to get my estrogen levels up. Then we started Menopur injections. The first round I responded too well and had too many mature eggs. Next we decided to try another round of injections but a lower dosage.... Very energetic and enthusiastic. Talks fast but tries to explan everything thoroughly. Clearly a busy doctor but takes the time to answer questions and be relational. When our first round of treatment was unsuccessful she was helpful in laying out all other possible options.
Great professional staff [at Bethesda Fertility Ctr]. Open on Saturdays which is very helpful. They use an app for sending messages which makes communication easy. Once I sent a message and didn't get an answer for a couple days, but the receptionist was able to see the message I sent to the doctor and she was able to help me.... Once I had to go in for an ultrasound on a Saturday and another doctor, not Dr Reynolds, examined me. She didn't communicate with me after the appointment about how much Menopur to take. The following day she did message me but her instructions were not appropriate and it resulted in my body overstimulating.

Dr. Reynolds is friendly and puts you at ease quickly. She is knowledgeable and helps you do understand exactly what the treatment is going to be. She would sit with us to explain what is going on and she had a positive attitude towards our goals.... Dr. Reynolds is efficient and knowledgeable, but also friendly and funny and puts you at ease. I had to leave the clinic because Bethesda does not do frozen donor egg transfers and I miss her!
Strengths: Dr. Reynolds is great, great clinic atmosphere, they conducted a 2 hour IVF class when we were first started IVF, which was so helpful. Weaknesses: The lab [Bethesda Fertility Center] only does fresh donor egg transfers and we wanted to do frozen so we had to move to a new clinic. I was sad to leave them.... The nurses were great! They were friendly and compassionate but also knowledgeable and got back to me quickly.

The one IVF cycle I did I actually won via a raffle with the clinic! (Too bad it didn't work). The IUI's and other procedures I think cost around 3-4K total, since my insurance covered a lot of it.
