Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

We have not met Dr.Lannon in person. We have had to refer to him a few times to adjust medicines, treatment, etc and he has been extremely responsive and patient with us! We are hoping to meet him in person at some point during this experience...Dr.Lannon knew my partner and I wanted to try IUI so he recommended and prescribed Letrozole. I’ve done 4 months of letrozole and each month I’ve ovulating normally and on a consistent schedule.
[Boston IVF - The Maine Center] Strengths-compassion, confidence, knowledge, understanding I have spent a lot of my life worrying about getting pregnant and fearing infertility. As I faced those things during my time at the clinic I was met with nothing but kindness and help. We were given treatment options and tender care that changed our lives. Weaknesses-expensive (not their fault, so worth it!)

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I would tell them to trust his process. I feel like we were able to fully trust that he knew what he was doing. Every question we had, he had an answer for.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I really appreciated that everyone my partner and I worked with saw us as a valid, deserving couple. Being a lesbian couple we often have felt a feeling of disregard surrounding having children and when working with Dr.Lannon and his team we felt really seen and supported.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
I was not ovulating. It was explained that my pituitary gland wasn’t communicating with my ovaries to release an egg. Dr.Lannon knew my partner and I wanted to try IUI so he recommended and prescribed Letrozole. I’ve done 4 months of letrozole and each month I’ve ovulating normally and on a consistent schedule. This changed our constant wondering if I’d ever ovulate to being able to track down to the day of when I’m most fertile. It was offered to do monitoring as well, to see if I had tubal ligation. At this time my partner and I don’t feel it’s necessary as we’ve only had one failed round of IUI so far. This is something we’d plan to explore if we ended up with 3/4 failed rounds.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Barbara )
An angel on earth. I have had a million questions and concerns and every single one has been answered and listened to with no judgement or dismiss. We have felt so well cared for by our nursing team.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
The hardest part of fertility treatments for us has been the cost of sperm. this is not the fault of Dr.Lannon. The cost to start a family is very high, I have been really blessed to have some insurance coverage to help with the bill but the hardest part is the sperm we needed. That cost is something that out of pocket is hard to come up with month after month. For a breakdown of cost $2000-sperm and transport $100-soerm storage $11-medications monthly $750-per round of IUI This is without us exploring IVF which I know it much more expensive then IUI.
Describe Benjamin Lannon's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
We had talked with Dr.Adams about the possibility of doing twin transfer and they said they are willing to do it when that’s requested. My partner and I voiced that if we did IVF we’d want to tranfer two embryos and they were very supportive and willing to do that.

Dr. Lannon made you feel like you were as important to him as family...He is kind, gentle, thorough and brought humor when appropriate. He always reached out as quickly as he had any news or outcomes from our cycle...he never made you feel less than or just a number. After egg retrievals he personally reached out later that evening just to check to see how I was recovering. I would recommend Dr.Lannon without hesitation.
[Boston IVF- The Maine Center is] Very thorough, expect monitoring closely and appointments every 2-3 days. Staff is very kind and will call with any update and not keep you waiting. When there is good news they celebrate with you and make you feel very special. During one of my cycles I had Covid- the staff checked in on me as if I were family.

Dr. Lannon made you feel like you were as important to him as family. I truly believe I got the same treatment as he would have given a sister or brother. His words were genuine and he referred to himself as “Ben”, he never made you feel less than or just a number. To call the office if you had any questions while undergoing treatment as He and the staff will always break down any question you have.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
When we first met Dr Lannon he was polite and treated us well. Sometimes being a bi-racial couple I still feel like there are stereotypes out there but we didn’t get that feeling at all. He was able to answer all of our questions and even out of the office if I had questions he gave us his email address where he was very prompt to answer our questions...He doesn’t push anything or force any decisions for us to make.
I do wish there were more [Boston IVF] clinics above Portland to help provide services to more northern Maine families...I wish the hours were more flexible, being open later in the day for those who work full time and don’t have the flexibility right away for simple appointments...IVF fee of $10,400 plus the sperm injection of $2750 that would need to be paid up front. The fee for freezing of $1300 will be billed it there are viable embryos to freeze after the transfer.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
When we first met Dr Lannon he was polite and treated us well. Sometimes being a bi-racial couple I still feel like there are stereotypes out there but we didn’t get that feeling at all. He was able to answer all of our questions and even out of the office if I had questions he gave us his email address where he was very prompt to answer our questions. I do feel like the process we have been going through has been taking some time. For example last year we met with him and I would have through we would have done blood tests on me to make sure I was sound to have a baby and check my eggs but it wasn’t until I asked him that he said we could if I wanted to. I feel like that should have just been automatic but maybe not?
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Write down your questions a head of time and even if you have more questions after you leave from meeting him don’t be afraid to reach out. He’s very polite and easy to approach.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I feel like Dr.Lannon has been doing what my husband and I have asked. He’s even gone a step further and has kept in contact with me through e-mail which I believe is to be personable. If I have questions he’s there to answer. He doesn’t push anything or force any decisions for us to make.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
My has has a hard time ejaculating Dr Lannon recommended taking a decongestant to see if that will help with the flow of the seamen. He believes my husband may have retrograde ejaculation. He had my husband complete a sperm sample which was 1.5 million which is very low. My husband had a hydrocele on his right testicle. He recommended a urologist who then recommended surgery on my husband. We had that completed and Dr Lannon recommended repeat the sperm sample which was 2.8 million this time still low. He now recommends IVF with ICSI
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
Whenever we went there they were alway nice. I’ve only been there once so not much to review about. The first time meeting everyone though was fine.
Describe your experience with Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
I like how it’s not far from home. I do wish there were more clinics above Portland to help provide services to more northern Maine families otherwise people have to travel far for these services. I wish the hours were more flexible, being open later in the day for those who work full time and don’t have the flexibility right away for simple appointments
Describe the costs associated with your care under Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
Based on the tentative plan that Dr Lannon has in for you it would the IVF fee of $10,400 plus the sperm injection of $2750 that would need to be paid up front. The fee for freezing of $1300 will be billed it there are viable embryos to freeze after the transfer. This is directly from the financial coordinator

Dr. Lannon spoke in terms we could understand. With our first transfer, the pregnancy ended up being ectopic and I could tell by the way he spoke to it husband and I how sincere he was and how disappointed he was. He offered the next steps, but made sure we knew it was on our time, whenever we were ready...Because I'm "young" and otherwise healthy, it was strongly advised to transfer one embryo to avoid potential pregnancy complications with multiples.
I can call at any time and they are fully knowledgeable in my case. My primary nurse knows me by name and seems to truly care...[Boston IVF is] Very organized, never overbooked so you're not stuck waiting around, very confidential and compassionate. The only negative to say is that some of their ultrasound techs are less than friendly. Being such an emotional process, they should really know their audience and understand we are nervous and stressed.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
He's very good at putting a patient's mind at ease for such an uncomfortable, emotional procedure. He spoke in terms that were understood, but it was also very evident he knows exactly what he's doing. It's very clear he wants the same outcome for his patients that his patients are there for - a baby.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Ask a lot if questions - information is not always given in full because it might be assumed you are already aware.

For the first frozen transfer, Dr. Lannon prescribed PIO and endometrin. The PIO was 50mL every three days, starting 5 days before transfer. the Endometrin was twice a day. For the second FET, I was prescribed estradiol, which I took 6mg for three weeks, then started daily PIO shots if 50mL 6 days before transfer.

$4,400 for a FET, which includes the transfer, ultrasounds, and bloodwork as along as performed at the clinic

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
Sometimes there can be miscommunications when talking to multiple people at the clinic. I think it's a matter of discussing a protocol with the nurse/doctor and not having it immediately updated in my chart for the rest of the clinic to view.

We are young and I have a high AMH so [Dr.Alper] customized our protocol so we wouldn’t overstimulate...took lots of notes on our situation so every time we saw him or spoke over the phone he was very up to date on our individualized care. He does care about your success and will do what needs to be done and is very thorough on explaining things but can be a little quick to get you out of his office. I have left feeling like I didn’t always have my questioned answered
Nursing staff [at Boston IVF] has been wonderful. Communication with them is great. Financial office is bad. Not good with communication, gives very little information when needed. Their office is small and I love that about it because you feel less like a number. They often refer to us as the “travelers” because we have to travel 3 hours to get to the office, but it feels so personal and sweet and I love that they are a small enough clinic to remember their patients.
How was your experience with Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Our overall experience thus far with dr. Alper has been good. He is great at explaining the process of IVF and the logistics. I have a couple autoimmune diseases and we were beginning to look into IVF when one of them went into a dangerous flare. No matter how many times I begged him to start, he told us he wanted the best outcome for us and wanted me to be at my healthiest. That appointment was HARD. But I now appreciate him pushing off our treatment because it showed he cared about us and in the end was the right decision. I am a very straight to the point “give me all the details” kind of patient and he is a “everything is fine” “trust me” kind of doctor. He has a lot of faith in the process and that things will work out and definitely looks on the bright side of all things. While this is great and some patients might really appreciate this, this is where we butt heads a little bit because I like the cold hard truth. I like to see my specific results for everything, I like to hear opinions good and bad on everything and weigh pros and cons. Being Informed is best in my opinion and he doesn’t usually give all the information, just a summarized “best” version. I do like him as our doctor and so far our experience moving forward through IVF has been wonderful.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Be an advocate for yourself. This goes for any doctor. But test results don’t always tell the full truth, otherwise “unexplained infertility” wouldn’t be a thing. Write your questions down and push to have them answered. Don’t be afraid to be assertive about your particular situation if you have concerns. Communication is great so typically that isn’t something to worry about. Just be an advocate for yourself!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr Alper took lots of notes on our situation so every time we saw him or spoke over the phone he was very up to date on our individualized care. He does care about your success and will do what needs to be done and is very thorough on explaining things but can be a little quick to get you out of his office. I have left feeling like I didn’t always have my questioned answered, which was why I didn’t rate him “perfect” on this scale. I’ve learned to be a bit more assertive asking questions so we now work well together.
Describe the protocols Michael Alper used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
We are young and I have a high AMH so Alper customized our protocol so we wouldn’t overstimulate. We did Gonal F, Cetrotide, and a Lupron trigger. There was a risk for hyperstimulation for me but dr Alper was really great with lowering my dosages and watching everything closely so that didn’t happen. Our IVF cycle produced 35 eggs retrieved, 27 of those fertilized, 17 made it to day 5 embryos and were frozen, 7 of those came back pgs normal embryos. We were very happy with our outcome of our IVF cycle. Due to Covid 19 we haven’t been able to move forward to our transfer yet. With my autoimmune conditions I advocated for immune protocols for our transfer but Alper is a bit reserved when it comes to “experimental treatment”. Or treatment/protocols without enough evidence to support. We’ve lost 5 pregnancies so this was important to us to try but he was strict on his opinion. He took us seriously though and pushed for second and third opinions from other doctors, which I appreciated. Dr. Alper cares.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Tiffany)
My nurse Tiffany has been the best part of my treatment at Boston IVF. She is amazing. Great at communicating, very fast at getting back to you. She is so organized! I don’t know how she does it handling so many people but she does an amazing job making you feel like you are her only patient. The financial office is bad with communication. Not good with sharing pertinent information. We were hit with an unexpected huge bill and nobody communicated with us. Their phlebotomist is amazing!! She is so sweet and always makes you feel so good. She asks how we’re doing and how things are going and truly cares about you. It’s nice to have someone ask those questions.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
We had a cap of 10k for insurance coverage which we feel so blessed to have. Our IVF cycle (ministering, retrieval, freezing of embryos) cost is about 2000. Our pgs testing (which we were not given any information about regarding cost or what to expect) cost us 8,000. This was unexpected and we weren’t prepared to handle it. Our transfer will be out of pocket.
Describe Michael Alper's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
For our particular situation I am considered high risk with pregnancy so he strongly advised us not to transfer more than one. We never wanted more than 1 transferred at a time anyway so this wasn’t an issue.

I liked Dr. Lannon's approach and personality. He listened to our concerns, and I think he genuinely wanted to help us...This was our first attempt at IVF, and we were dealing with largely unexplained infertility. He used a very conservative, very traditional protocol...[new patient advice]Don't be afraid to ask questions or get a second opinion if something doesn't make sense to you.
[nurse of Boston IVF] She always answered my emails and questions promptly and thoroughly...We paid roughly $10k for the retrieval and a fresh transfer and $4k for each frozen transfer (plus the separate cost of medication)...[clinic error] she [nurse]told me different instructions regarding our PIO and seemed unwilling to consider that she might be wrong. It's a good thing I was paying attention and willing to push back. She followed up with the doctor and then called to tell us she made a mistake.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I liked Dr. Lannon's approach and personality. He listened to our concerns, and I think he genuinely wanted to help us. That said, we did not get the outcome we wanted, and we've been given totally different advice since consulting with new doctors. It's hard not to wonder if we should have changed course sooner (and saved a lot of time, money, and heartache in the process).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Don't be afraid to ask questions or get a second opinion if something doesn't make sense to you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Though we did not get the outcome we hoped for, I always thought Dr. Lannon did a great job of balancing candid responses with empathy for our situation.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
This was our first attempt at IVF, and we were dealing with largely unexplained infertility. He used a very conservative, very traditional protocol. We got 4 day 5 embryos that all failed to implant. Basically, the retrieval part worked exactly as he told us it would, but IVF demonstrated that there seems to be an issue with implantation.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Tiffany)
My primary nurse (Tiffany) was great. She always answered my emails and questions promptly and thoroughly. That said, she was out of the office for one of my transfers, and another nurse left a bad taste in my mouth. To make a long story short, when she called to check in with me, she told me different instructions regarding our PIO and seemed unwilling to consider that she might be wrong. It's a good thing I was paying attention and willing to push back. She followed up with the doctor and then called to tell us she made a mistake.
Describe your experience with Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
The Portland clinic does a pretty good job, but it's a shame it's really the only option in the area. I think the lack of competition is ultimately not great for consumers, as the clinic is not worried about losing business.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
We paid roughly $10k for the retrieval and a fresh transfer and $4k for each frozen transfer (plus the separate cost of medication).
Describe Benjamin Lannon's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
I was surprised that Dr. Lannon did not push back much at all when we asked about transferring two embryos at one time. I personally liked that he allowed us to make that decision and didn't try to persuade us either way.

[Dr. Lannon] was pleasant and knowledgeable. He gave us hope and assured us that was IVF was the correct next step for us based on our age...I only talked to Dr Lannon once before retrieval day and then next on transfer day. While this is common more face time would have been nice...He made us feel comfortable...I felt my protocol could have been more aggressive. We stared out with 250 ui of Gonal-f and my follicles grew fairly slow...upped my dosage slightly near the end to help the follicles grow but it was only for two days. We ended up retrieving 9 eggs...Dr Lannon was open to transferring two embryos due to my age (35). And made the decision for us on retrieval day to transfer two due to only having 3 embryos make it to day 5
The clinic itself [Boston IVF] you feel more like a number...My favorite person on the team was the phlebotomist, Courtney. She was so friendly and kind and made me feel comfortable and cared for. My primary nurse Tiffanie was great but I only talked to her a handful of times. Much of the communicate is through the IVF portal...$9400 for retrieval and transfer...The financial part is scary and intimidating. The person going through it flies through the options and pricing. We left after meeting with her feeling extremely overwhelmed. She answered my follow up questions via email quickly but they were very short and often didn’t answer my entire question. I wish there had been more check ins and communciation during the embryo growing process. I heard from the nurse after insemination but didn’t get any update until retrieval day and we had to ask the doctor for an update.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon is very friendly and easy to talk to. We had planned on meeting with other doctors at other clinics but as soon as we met Dr Lannon we knew we wanted to continue seeing him. He made us feel comfortable.

Be sure to ask questions. He’s very open to them and doesn’t make you feel stupid for asking them.

Dr Lannon wants to try a few rounds of a natural IUI cycle. If that doesn’t work we will regroup and look at a medicated cycle. For now I am just using ovulation predictor kits and will go in for an IUI when it’s a positive. ... I was previously diagnosed with uterine scaring by a different doctor. Dr Lannon questioned those results and wanted to take another look with a saline infused sonogram.
Their [Boston IVF] scheduling is a little weird to me. I have had 2 appointments and both have been changed to earlier in the day. I am lucky to have a flexible job but that might not work for everyone. It’s almost like they don’t even ask you if the time change will work they just kind of tell you. ... Tammy [nurse] was very knowledgeable and took time to help me understand things.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
At our consult he explained things so clearly and made things easy for us to understand. This whole process and journey to get here has been confusing on so many different levels. When we left our consult we felt a way we hadn’t felt in 4 years...hopeful. You are his patient but he makes you feel included and heard.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
He gives you a ton of information, try to record your consult. The next day when things settled in my brain I wrote down a ton of questions to bring to my next appointment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I was previously diagnosed with uterine scaring by a different doctor. Dr Lannon questioned those results and wanted to take another look with a saline infused sonogram. At the consult he said “ I want to take another look, well you and I can look together” it just made me feel included and that he wanted to make sure I understood what was going on. During the procedure he explained every step and showed me on the monitor what we were looking at. The best news, his assumptions were correct and I was previously misdiagnosed!

Shockingly my insurance covered our consult. I just had $25 copay. If you pay upfront rather than them billing your insurance they only charge you half of what the cost is that is billed to insurance. I know my insurance doesn’t cover procedures or treatments so I opt to pay upfront and take advantage of the discount,

Often times when meeting with Dr. Alper he wouldn't know what our diagnosis was, or what our history was. He'd make a blanket statement and we'd have to kind of correct him and it wasn't until then he'd check our file and then change what he had said.... Dr. Alper is very knowledgeable but also very nonchalant. We often felt that our case wasn't a big deal. At the same time he was open to our questions and very good at explaining everything in detail. I wish we hadn't stuck with the same protocol over and over until we ran out of embryos
I loved the nursing staff at Boston IVF.... Administration is not the most compassionate, they're disorganized and short in their answers. I always felt like I was bothering them with my questions. The nurses are wonderful. The blood drawing team and the ultrasound techs are amazing.... $12,000 FOR IVF cycle not including meds. $4,000 for frozen embryo transfer not including meds. All bloodwork and monitoring before starting a cycle was additional cost.
How was your experience with Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Alper is very knowledgeable but also very nonchalant. We often felt that our case wasn't a big deal. At the same time he was open to our questions and very good at explaining everything in detail. I wish we hadn't stuck with the same protocol over and over until we ran out of embryos, but he sort of made us feel like we had to just "go with the flow".
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Educate yourselves first. Be prepared to ask questions. Know what you want and fight for yourself.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Often times when meeting with Dr. Alper he wouldn't know what our diagnosis was, or what our history was. He'd make a blanket statement and we'd have to kind of correct him and it wasn't until then he'd check our file and then change what he had said. If we weren't there to remind him we wouldn't have gotten proper treatment in my opinion. He would have just told the nurse to tell us to do one thing when really we're doing something else now because I spoke up.
Describe the protocols Michael Alper used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
After losing 4 of our 5 embryos to negative cycles and chemical pregnancies we finally did ERA. We cured that with 3 cycles of antibiotics but then moved forward with another transfer with the same protocol as before even though I asked for the autoimmune protocol just to be safe.

I think I've stated most issues. I always felt hesitant to contact administrative staff because their way of communication turned me off. It's such an emotional roller coaster you're on so I wish they would treat us a little gentler; from financials to scheduling.

We loved each and every experience we had with Dr. Lannon. If I were to give any constructive feedback I would say that between starting meds for the retrieval and the actual retrieval we mostly only spoke to his nurses. We completely understand that he is extremely busy, and I know that for every monitoring appointment and blood test he was assessing my results, but hearing from him would have been supportive.
I really enjoyed our clinic [Boston IVF- South Portland]. The support staff was very helpful. I will say that the billing department was extremely disappointing. This is a very sensitive experience for people, and I did not feel like their billing employee gave any empathy, patience, or understanding. I understand that this at the end of the day is a business, we felt like if we didn't completely pay up front that issues would arise, also their was inconsistency in how we were communicated with. Bills that came from the actual Boston, Boston IVF location were almost threatening, notes left at the end of the bill (which I still have for proof) would have comments like "PAYMENT IS SERIOUSLY OVERDUE" which is obviously something we are more than aware of.

Go into an appointment where you will be speaking with Dr. Lannon with structured questions you would like to have answered. I wish we had done that because I sometimes left feeling like I had wished I had written everything down versus trying to remember it all in my head.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon took extensive time to speak with us in our initial consultation, as well as our consult to begin IVF treatment. Throughout the process he was always reachable, and felt very supported by his staff as well. More importantly, once we found out the transfer had failed. He went out of his way to call us within hours of my blood test results to simply see if my husband and I were okay. Dr. Lannon has truly helped my husband and I to approach the IVF experience with a sense of humor, and know that we are in good hands.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
For our egg retrieval we used FSH's such as gonal f, menopur, and cetrotide. After each monitoring Dr. Lannon would tweak my meds based on the ultrasounds and blood tests. We had a pretty "simple' retrieval experience, they got 14 eggs, we did not need ICSI, and 4 made it to Day 5 maturation. He transferred the best graded embryo for a fresh transfer, a 4AA.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Barbara)
Barbara is one of the nurses that supports Dr. Lannons patients and I could not be more thankful for the empathy and sensitivity she showed us each and every day during our retrieval and transfer process.

So the egg retrieval and transfer were 9,400. Medications for retrieval were 3,000. Testing prior to starting the retrieval (genetic) were 1,100.
Describe Benjamin Lannon's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
As we were set on only transferring one embryo, we are not very sure on what Dr. Lannons stance is on multiple embryos transferred. We do know that he is comfortable transferring two but I am not sure past that amount.

Dr. Lannon was not only a part of my clomid/letrozole cycles, but he also performed a surgery to correct my septate uterus. The surgery was a great experience and I always knew what to expect and how to deal with it. During my medicated cycles, he treated my cycles as a priority even though we were doing simple hormone treatments. With each of my two miscarriages, he was there for comfort and to explain every detail possible. Every appointment has been a good experience.
Everyone at the clinic [Boston IVF- South Portland] is friendly and comforting at times of joy as well as during the hard times. They are prompt and timely at returning calls and emails. All of the paperwork and info has been sent via email prior to our appointments which makes it easier to review on our own time before talking about it in person.

Ask any questions you may have. No question is too simple and will always be answered.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon made every effort to make me feel important during every cycle, even though it was simply a clomid or letrozole cycle with no other treatments. Even though I was not doing an IVF cycle, he still made my cycle a priority. I can’t wait to do our IVF cycle with him in a couple of weeks.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
The first treatment I had was to correct my uterus. I had a laporoscopy and hysteroscopy to remove a septum in my uterus. After that was corrected, I did clomid cycles. The second cycle worked but ended in m/c at 8 weeks. The very next clomid cycle I did after my first m/c worked but also ended around 8 weeks. After doing a couple more clomid cycles, we switched to letrozole. After 3 letrozole cycles that didn’t work (and a couple years of a break from trying) we were advised to move onto an ivf cycle with pgs testing. We are starting injections for that this month and can’t wait to start the journey.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Tiffany Tifft)
Tiffany has been great at explaining all of the steps for our upcoming ivf cycle. She is also always prompt at responding to emails and calls, as is the rest of the staff.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
We did a freeze all cycle [with Dr. Benjanmin Lannon] due to the risk of OHSS based on my AMH. I stimmed for 8 days, Follistim/Menopur/Ganirelix. My estrogen went sky high and it was recommended that I switch to Lupron trigger - however, at the time this was going to cost me an extra $700 so I pleaded to continue with Ovidrel trigger. (I did end up with OHSS). 24 retrieved, 19 fertilized = 6 embryos.
It's [Boston IVF- Maine] small so you will pretty much only work with your nurse and definitely only with your doctor. Because it's small, they do manage cycles to line up with their OR schedule. I wish there were more services available here like acupuncture, mental health, etc. I don't like working with the financial people - I feel like there should be more compassion in that process because it is VERY expensive. They've also raised their prices in the last year.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon is kind, funny, and intelligent. He has responded to my questions nearly immediately which I appreciate. He has validated my feelings throughout the entire process and I truly believe he is committed to our success. I believe he works very hard as sometimes he would share results with us in the evening when I know he isn't at work. This was incredible as the waiting period for results is very stressful. I knew as soon as he had them, we'd have them.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Don't be afraid to bring up what you've read/researched. You can really ask all questions you have.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon has taken the time to respond to all of my emails, calls, and in person questions/concerns. He was very validating after our first failed transfer and was open to hearing about what I want to explore as next steps but also gave me his expert opinion. The nurses have all been very nice.

First frozen embryo transfer- estrogen patch and pills for three weeks then started endometrin suppositories for 5 days before transfer. Transferred failed unfortunately even though it was a high grade, PGS tested embryo. We are waiting to start a new cycle to transfer again.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Tiffany)
I was assigned a nurse but would hear from other nurses often during the transfer cycle. That was fine since they're all nice. Our nurse is nice, professional, and returns calls quickly.

Consultation: $350 , Follow up appointment: $300 Freeze all cycle: $7,750, PGS testing: $3,850, Embryo storage for one year: $1,020, Frozen Embryo Transfer: $4,000. None of this includes medications or blood tests.
Describe Benjamin Lannon's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
It was preferred to only transfer one due to high risks of a multiple pregnancy. We agreed so it hasn't been discussed again since.

I felt like more [with Dr. Lannon] could have been done to give us a positive result. When both cycles were over and nothing was left, it was suggested to look into egg donation before doing any further testing...Was put on birth control until the start of period. Gonal F 225IU and HCG20 for 7 days. 7th day started Cetrotide 0.25 along with GonalF and HCG. Continued that for days 7,8,9. Took Ovidrel injection day 11. That was our first cycle regular IVF resulting in 11 mature eggs retrieved, 0 fertilized
They [Boston IVF staff] were very helpful with the financial part of things and guided my husband and I through every step. I do feel that I could’ve had a different outcome had I known what I know now so I’d tell a new patient to get all the facts about IVF and your specific situation before moving forward with any clinic...Our first loan to cover cycle was for $12,175.00. We didn’t end up with any embryos so the cost for freezing and transfer were deducted so it ended up around $8000
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I truly did love Dr Lannon. He was great. It was the outcome that I didn’t love and after I had done lots of my own research and got a second opinion from another well known R.E. I realized maybe more could’ve been done. I believe he did all that he thought was right but should’ve done ICSI for our first cycle and not just IVF which resulted in NO fertilization of my 11 eggs. He was very kind and I really liked him but I’m childless now and my husband and I have spent all that we had to do those 2 rounds and went back to him to ask what he thought and he said we should look into egg donation. Another RE begs to differ.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Do your own research and know EXACTLY what’s going on with your own body and get ALL the facts before moving forward. He’s great, he is probably one of the best in our area..but nobody is perfect and in my heart I truly feel he missed a step. Get as much information as you can before you spend all that money.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I felt like more could have been done to give us a positive result. When both cycles were over and nothing was left, it was suggested to look into egg donation before doing any further testing.

Was put on birth control until the start of period. Gonal F 225IU and HCG20 for 7 days. 7th day started Cetrotide 0.25 along with GonalF and HCG. Continued that for days 7,8,9. Took Ovidrel injection day 11. That was our first cycle regular IVF resulting in 11 mature eggs retrieved, 0 fertilized. Rescue ICSI performed resulting in 8 fertilized. None continued over the next few days. We were left with nothing.Second cycle (a few months later) was the exact same thing except dosages were higher..GonalF 300, HCG30 for days 7,8,9. On day 10 took only Gonal F 300 in afternoon. Ovidrel trigger shot day 11 930pm. 12 mature eggs retrieved. ICSI and PICSI performed. 6 fertilized. Started progesterone tablets 2 days after retrieval. 6 made it to day 3 embryos. On day 5 there were 3 but only 1 was very good so I was called in to do a day 5 transfer of our only good embryo. A chemical pregnancy was the outcome.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
The nursing staff were great. They were always extremely helpful in guiding me through the process and explaining every step. Also very prompt with returning calls and answering questions that I had. There was only one time that I had gotten a call and the nurse mistook me for another patient so there was some confusion but it was quickly corrected. They were very attentive and compassionate.
Describe your experience with Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
I do recommend Boston IVF Portland, Maine Clinic. They are an experienced clinic and make you feel comfortable and welcome. They were very helpful with the financial part of things and guided my husband and I through every step. I do feel that I could’ve had a different outcome had I known what I know now so I’d tell a new patient to get all the facts about IVF and your specific situation before moving forward with any clinic. Every doctor is different and may take a different approach to your specific needs.

Our first loan to cover cycle was for $12,175.00. We didn’t end up with any embryos so the cost for freezing and transfer were deducted so it ended up around $8000. The second cycle was more because of the decision to do ICSI and PICSI. We also had to pay for medication out of pocket which was about $3000 that we had to come up with (for each round) We took out a home equity loan to pay off remaining debt from first cycle and pay for the second cycle..about $20,000.00. Paying separately for medication. That was 3 years ago. We’re still paying our loan.
Describe Benjamin Lannon's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
Had we had more than one embryo, we had discussed only transferring one. That was suggested by Dr Lannon. I do not have any other comments regarding this since we only had one embryo.

Doctor Lannon took a great deal of time answering our many questions and creating a fertility plan with us. He was candid and clear with his responses and very funny which helped to keep the mood light, all the while being sensitive to our situation. We feel completely comfortable seeing Dr Lannon. I would have liked him to coach us more on lifestyle changes that could help improve our fertility, but it seems he was sure that our problem might not be improved and our best option is IVF.
The clinic [Boston IVF-S. Portland] is welcoming, private, calm and comforting. I never have to wait long to be seen and rarely encounter others in the wait room. If you are a male and need to provide a sample, you are allowed to do so at home and bring it in within an hour - which is great because there is only one restroom off the reception area. My husband was not interested in attempting to provide a sample in that restroom and walking it to the receptionist. The patient rooms are small and basic, offices are comfortable.

Do your homework ahead of your visit and go informed and armed with questions.

Dr Lannon is down to Earth, has a great sense of humor, and listens well and weighs in on concerns. He spent a lot of time with my husband and I.

So far we have received only diagnostic testing, one cycle of Clomid without treatment, and one cycle of Clomid with unmonitored IUI. We received the Clomid and IUI treatment because we asked for it, not because it was suggested. It has been suggested that we try IVF, but we will request one more round of IUI before considering.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Tami Gosselin)
Tami has been wonderful with us. She is kind, answers all of our questions, and makes sure we are well informed. She calls and sends follow up emails so that I have a reference for instructions. She's great!

We paid $450 for an unmonitored IUI cycle. If I remember correctly, I paid $400 for a sonohysterogram, and about $100 for my husband's semen analysis. We also paid $200 for genetic testing (for me).

Dr. Lannon is warm, approachable, and has a sense of humor. He took the time to answer any and all questions we had and he has been very responsive personally to e-mails. We recently asked for a bottom-line honest opinion and feel he delivered on that. I trust Dr. Lannon. I was disappointed at how our pregnancy loss was handled as I felt like we were ushered out of the office quickly due to being upset and then there was no follow-up.
We felt like a number at times with Boston IVF -everything is scheduled according to the day they do procedures, not according to how my body is responding.... Overall the staff were great. I did not feel that I received all the information I wanted with regard to financial assistance options. It felt like a cookie cutter list was given to us with options that we were then responsible for looking into ourselves.... The clinic was very secretive about our results.

We recently asked for a bottom-line honest opinion and feel he delivered on that. I trust Dr. Lannon. I was disappointed at how our pregnancy loss was handled as I felt like we were ushered out of the office quickly due to being upset and then there was no follow-up. We were also not given specific information about our baby's heart rate and we only found out how low the heart rate was after requesting our records some time later. I feel like we would have been better prepared for our follow-up ultrasound if we had been given this information. I received a call from my ob/gyn's office stating that they received our records and wanted to know what our follow-up was for the missed miscarriage and we had none. I did reach out to Boston IVF a while later to discuss my disappointment and they sent my message to Dr. Lannon and we received an e-mail from him personally the same day. He stated that the clinic chooses to give people space after their loss which I don't agree with but felt some relief that we weren't just dropped because we weren't a success. We went abroad for another cycle due to cost and we reached out to Dr. Lannon again a year later since last seeing him and were able to schedule a meeting with him pretty quickly.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Ask for what you need - don't wait for it to be offered. Dr. Lannon is a great doctor and partners with you. I wish that we had been more direct the first time about our questions, our needs, and potential risks.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
With Dr. Lannon specifically we always felt like a human - he is very personable and responsive. We felt like a number at times with Boston IVF -everything is scheduled according to the day they do procedures, not according to how my body is responding.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
We had no reason based on my blood work to think I would not respond well to stimulation and it was a shock to us and Dr. Lannon when they only retrieved 6 mature eggs. I started with birth control pill and then took Lupron followed by Gonal F 300 mg until the trigger shot (Ovidrel) and Lupron may have been added back in there towards the end. Dr. Lannon did tell us that if we were to do another cycle with him using my eggs, he would consider a lupron antagonist protocol. We ended up with all 6 eggs fertilizing and 2 blastocysts.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
We warmed up to our nurse as we had more interactions with her. Our first meeting where we went over the protocol was overwhelming and felt rushed and confusing and the nurse was not overly warm. The nursing staff in general was great and I felt well cared for during procedures.
Describe your experience with Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
Overall the staff were great. I did not feel that I received all the information I wanted with regard to financial assistance options. It felt like a cookie cutter list was given to us with options that we were then responsible for looking into ourselves. There is minimal information given about possible grants and scholarships available or other options other than financing. We requested this information specifically when we were considering whether or not we would be able to afford another cycle and I included what we had already used for options in the past that would no longer be an option and I received a generic e-mail back with the same list given to us the first time. We qualified for a treatment discount based on our income and I was very disappointed to learn that if we used any form of grant or gift money that we would no longer qualify for the discount. There are few grants that provide substantial assistance and unless we received at least a $10k grant, we would end up having to pay more than our first cycle without the discount. The clinic felt like a factory at times and everything is scheduled according to when the clinic does particular procedures rather than specific to how I responded. There was a question about whether or not I would have had more mature eggs if given a couple more days of stimulation but the retrieval was scheduled for 1 day for all patients. My next cycle was at a clinic abroad and they saw me daily towards the end to closely monitor the growth and scheduled the retrieval for the day my body was ready. The clinic was very secretive about our results. For instance, I was doing fertility acupuncture and my acupuncturist wanted me to come with my estrogen level and how many follicles and what size but the clinic would not give me this information and they said they don't give this out.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
Fresh IVF cycle using our own eggs and sperm with a discount based on income cost $8,000 and the medications cost about $3,000 with a pharmacy that offers a discount to Boston IVF patients. We recently went for another consult and it is recommended that we move to donor egg which is $18,000 for a single cycle or $42,000 for the assurance program which offers a full refund if you are are not able to have a live birth within 6 cycles.

Dr Alper is very knowledgeable and well recognized for fertility treatment. I have experienced two miscarriages and an ectopic pregnancy and did not receive much compassion about this, although he provided me with factual and realistic information in regards to these occurrences. In my circumstances, he seemed to be very focused on the medical and scientific aspect of the treatment and did not seem to give any sympathy to my losses, which was hard for me. He provided me with very detailed and accurate information in regards to my procedures and what to expect.
Clinic [Boston IVF-South Portland] was slow at returning calls with important results. They were always able to schedule me if I needed to be seen but when I received bad news they lacked compassion or emotional support. Doctors and staff are fact a based and knowledgeable on the process and procedures but if you are looking for a clinic that provides emotional support during what can be a very trying time, I would be recommend this clinic.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
During my continued treatment, I have had a number of misfortunes; such as two chemical pregnancies and one ectopic pregnancy resulting in the removal of my fallopian tubes. I have had a number of diagnostic tests done and although I have follow ups to review the results, at my next visit, the Doctor suggesting testing that has already been completed and reviewed. This makes it seem as though he does not remember my case or take the time to review my file before my appointments.
Describe the protocols Michael Alper used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
When I started working with Dr Alper, I had already completed 5 failed IUI cycles with my OB/GYN. Dr Alper completed all of the initial testing and stated that I was young and healthy and there was no reason that In-Vitro should not work. He determined that one of my fallopian tubes appeared to be blocked but we would be bypassing that with the in-vitro so there was no need to worry. During my first in-vitro cycle I took the injectable medications during the initial egg retrieval process. I had 15 eggs retrieved, 7 fertilized, and one embryo transferred in a fresh cycle. After the embryo transfer, I was put on progesterone gel once time daily. This cycle resulted in a positive pregnancy test, rising HCG until around 6 weeks and then miscarriage. Once my HCG level returned to 0, we completed a thaw cycle. This time after transfer I was put on progesterone suppository three times daily, estrogen patch that was changed 2 times a week, and estrogen pill two times daily. This cycle resulted in a positive pregnancy test with rising HCG until around 6 weeks with miscarriage. After this, Dr Alper did antibody testing, imaging of the lining of my uterus, and a biopsy of the lining of my uterus; all of these tests came back normal so Dr Alper approved another thaw cycle. This cycle resulted in a positive pregnancy test with HGC levels that were not rising appropriately. I was treated for ectopic, my HCG levels lowered, but it resulted in a hematoma in my fallopian tube, hemorrhage with internal bleeding, and I had both of my fallopian tubes removed as there was a cyst in my other tube. Still Dr Alper feels hopeful for a healthy pregnancy, although I am not feeling so optimistic.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Alper at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
My initial in vitro cycle with egg retrieval was 8,900 dollars and an additional 2500 for my injectable medications. When I used progesterone gel, this was 300 dollars for 2 weeks worth. My first thaw cycle was 3500 plus costs of medications, and my third thaw cycle was 4000 plus costs of medication. I had all of my monitoring ultrasounds and blood work done at a hospital that was more convenient for me, so this was an additional cost in my treatment.
Describe Michael Alper's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
After my two miscarriages and ectopic pregnancy, Dr Alper approved to transfer 2 embryos at next transfer if this is what I wish to do.

I would say that he [Dr. Benjamin Lannon] should maybe do blood tests of the female to really check hormonal levels prior to jumping into IUI and other fertility treatments...He mentioned doing an HSG first then from there doing IUI’s for as many rounds as we wanted depending on if my tubes were found to be open. If that didn’t work, then he recommended Clomid IVF where they monitor my follicles and only remove 2 mature eggs and fertilize them and then implant them back into my body. He understood we do not feel right doing General IVF.
Some [nurses at Boston IVF] were rushed but we had one great nurse that we chatted with on the phone when we needed bloodwork for our pregnancy...Consolation was $250-$300...Ultrasound for miscarriage was $350-400...he was open to what we wanted but felt at least 2 embryos transferred were best in order to boost...chances...They were great about getting us in quickly and great to talk with. The secretary’s could be a bit more understanding of the patients fear and having lots of questions about the paperwork. Great company
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannister’s was gentle and kind. Though he felt that us not getting pregnant on 4 rounds of clomid was an orange flag and not a red flag, he didn’t take the time to explain why. He was organized and very kind but never thought to test my hormones or my thyroid. I felt that he was the same as my PCP and OB in that sense. Jumping right into IUI or clomid IVF is intense and may not be necessary if all other body parts are working. (Fallopian tubes) ext. We did get pregnant on our own only to miscarry after our first consultation. But he said if we weren’t pregnant in 6 months to call him to start IUI. So we left feeling like we were broken and not heard and pushed into treatment even though we conceived on our own. Over all he’s kind, not rushed, and understands that we don’t want to be there for help as we want to do it naturally but have no other option. But he gets that bedside manner is important and that it is a huge leap of faith. I do recommend him!

Dr. Lannon is a stellar doctor who has always communicated well with me. He's honest but warm, personable, and analytical. His bedside manner is impeccable and he has a good sense of humor. We had mixed results with our embryos and I had some complications throughout my treatment, but I always felt a strong sense of empathy from him and felt like we were in this together...Dr. Lannon was always happy to share his knowledge. He explains things when asked, but he might not offer up information without a prompt.
I only saw one doctor (not including anesthesiologists) at Boston IVF which I really liked. The nurses are quick to call you back. They have floating sonographers so I hardly saw the same person twice for ultrasounds. The receptionist is wonderful, but the backup receptionist is not warm at all. They just redesigned their website, and while it looks nicer, it's too "marketing" and not "caring" enough for me...

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm pretty inquisitive and Dr. Lannon was always happy to share his knowledge. He explains things when asked, but he might not offer up information without a prompt.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon has always been very personable with me. He's always made me feel very comfortable and like I mattered.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
After rounds Clomid and a couple failed IUIs with another doctor, I saw Dr. Lannon for a full round of IVF. He first did a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to ensure my tubes weren't blocked, then we started the IVF cycle. Stimulation: Gonal-F and Lupron. Retrieval: general anesthesia. Transfer: transferred two fresh 5-day embryos and froze three more. Subsequent frozen transfers have consisted of Estradiol pills and patches, and progesterone suppositories (Crinone before the drug price skyrocketed, Endometrin after). Before my final transfer, Dr. Lannon recommended/performed a hysteroscopy on me due to retained placental product which called for general anesthesia.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Amy)
It took me a bit to warm to Amy. She covers information quickly and is very frank which can come off as uncaring, but she's great once you get to know her a bit better.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
In 2014, IVF: $8,300 paid in full before process began (included pre-op; follicle monitoring; serum hormone assays during stimulation; egg retrieval; sperm prep; anesthesia; transfer; post-op). My initial meds were $4,000. Embryo freezing: $1,750. ICSI: $2,500. Other fees (we did not incur): $500 anesthesia at transfer; $1,000 assisted hatching. Patients can apply for financial aid and must submit two years of tax returns.
Describe Benjamin Lannon's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
I requested the initial transfer of two embryos and Dr. Lannon obliged. Subsequent transfers have been singles.

Dr. Lannon I would rate as Ok, he really did not give me any new information that I already didn't know and was not upfront about all my options (pushed IVF hard before trying anything else)...I always felt like a number, when we met with him for our first consult I felt as though he was giving me the same info he had given every patient. Nothing felt individualized. He also pushed IVF very hard on us and did not let me know all my options. I did 2 IUI's at Boston IVF which were done by nurses. I never saw him after our initial consult.
First off, any time I called to ask a question the receptionist would hurry me off the phone like I was bothering her and used a very unfriendly tone. If you are a self-pay patient like me (insurance will not cover any of my treatments) you must pay for the treatment or consults you are having in advance before they will even let you make the appointment. This has to be done through their website with a credit card. After your payment is accepted then they will take your call to make an appointment. This continued to make me feel like a number and the entire practice just felt like a business trying to make as much money as they could a and not a care team....The clinic [Boston IVF] is pretty simple, I thought it would actually be a little nicer for the amount of money patients are paying for the service. I did like that they had coffee in the Lobby though for the patients.

I would say advocate for what you need and want because he is not very straight forward.

He used Clomid and we did 2 IUI's. We did not do anything else with him because we did not feel comfortable.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
I met with one nurse that was very nice who did one of our IUI's but the others often made me feel like a number and just seemed like they wanted to get me out of there as soon as possible. They spoke very quickly, often did not make eye contact and did not spend any time listening to my questions.

IUI's were $500, I did not do IVF but the price I was quoted was $8000 for the procedure and $4-5000 for the medication.

When it was time for the retrieval, my hormones were too high because I responded very well to the meds. So Dr. Lannon thought it was best to wait until my body had returned to normal before finishing the cycle. We also had only 4 embryos and he wanted to give us the best chance at a positive result...feels that he wants to give patients the best outcome, and if one embryo sabotages the other embryo you could lose both of them. In our case, it was better that we only do one embryo at a time, as well that it was safer to not have twins if we could avoid it.
The nursing staff [at Boston IVF] were always very professional and compassionate. They always took the best care of us and wanted us to feel calm and we could ask any questions we needed to...We were given a discount based on our income, as well as a discount on the medications. We felt like cost never obstructed our quality of care...The clinic was always inviting, from the receptionist at the front to ultrasound techs or people who drew blood. We never felt rushed or felt like we were bothering anyone. The clinic had no weaknesses. All of the staff are very good at what they do. For a new patient, be patient, try to keep your stress levels down even though it is a very stressful process, and have faith in yourself and the staff.
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
From the day we walked through the door, Dr. Lannon treated us like we were important. He listened to our history and what we had been through and then gave us the facts, but delivered them in such a way that we felt like he was honest but not harsh. As a patient, I always felt like he was putting my needs first before financial gain. We never felt like he was after our money, he was generally concerned and cared if we had a child. When we went in for our egg retrieval, my hormone levels were incredibly high. He said we would see how many eggs we got before moving onto the transfer. After, due to difficulties retrieving eggs, we got 7 eggs. Dr. Lannon called us personally a few days later and said that it would have been unsafe to transfer with my hormones being so high. We also only had 4 embryos and he wanted to give us the best chance at a successful cycle. So Dr. Lannon suggested we stop the cycle and do a frozen cycle when my body had calmed down. We trusted him completely and did that. Dr. Lannon was amazing with the amount of care and compassion he conveyed to us.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Be honest and trust him and you will get the best care you will receive. Never give up, even when you feel like there is no hope.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
We felt like the tone of the care that we got was exceptional. Dr. Lannon spent extra time with us when we needed it. He explained things further if we needed it. We never felt rushed and he always answered our questions, no matter how silly we thought they were. We always felt welcome and like he care. He told us what we needed to hear, not what we wanted to hear. He was always honest with us and made us feel like he was listening to what we had to say.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
We had to use IVF with ICSI and were put on a medication protocol where I was injected every night for 2 weeks and had daily ultrasound and blood work. When it was time for the retrieval, my hormones were too high because I responded very well to the meds. So Dr. Lannon thought it was best to wait until my body had returned to normal before finishing the cycle. We also had only 4 embryos and he wanted to give us the best chance at a positive result. So we froze the embryos we had (ended up with 2) and waited until my body had returned to normal. The first frozen transfer we tried did not work, but the second one we tried did.

I appreciated Dr. Lannon's scientific, analytic approach to our conversations...His communication-style seems very adaptable to individual patients, so be sure to tell him what you need (Statistics? Data? A more emotional approach?)
...I felt the nurse was too curt in her explanations or descriptions of protocol, which led to confusion at times, including the failure to start an IVF cycle in February (we had to start in March instead).
How was your experience with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon is frank with a dry sense of humour. He was easy to talk to, well-prepared for our appointments, and thoroughly and patiently answered our questions. As a reproductive endocrinologist, he's very much focused on the goal of getting his patients pregnant. I came to him with a long-standing diagnosis of stage four endometriosis and I wanted to discuss treatment of that condition, which was preventing me from becoming pregnant. I felt he was less prepared/open for a conversation about endo, except as it affected our fertility issues.Ultimately, I ended up working with an OB/GYN to address endometriosis treatment, after which I returned to work with Dr. Lannon to continue fertility treatments.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
Dr. Lannon is approachable and friendly, but dry. Don't mistake his sense of humour for a lack of caring or lack of bedside manner. His communication-style seems very adaptable to individual patients, so be sure to tell him what you need (Statistics? Data? A more emotional approach?) Don't be afraid to ask questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
I appreciated Dr. Lannon's scientific, analytic approach to our conversations. I'm an attorney and my husband is an analyst. We both felt Dr. Lannon understood direct communication was important to us. He has a very dry sense of humour, which we also appreciated, but his approach never felt flip or anything less than understanding of the challenges we faced.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
Diagnostic: Other than my endometriosis, fertility tests did not reveal any underlying causes for infertility. Dr. Lannon discussed the various treatments available to us and recommended a course of Clomid. However, we put treatment on hold because I needed surgery. When I returned after recovery (approximately 1 year later), the statistical data showed that proceeding directly to IVF was our best approach. Stimulation: I began with nightly injections of Menopur and Bravelle. Every three-four days, I visited the clinic for an ultrasound and blood work. The same day, I would receive a call from the clinic nurse with any adjustments to my injections. This continued until my follicles were large enough (15mm+) to retrieve. At the end of my treatments, I took an additional, single shot of Cetrotide. Trigger: Thirty-six hours before retrieval, I injected myself with a single trigger shot (Ovidrel). Retrieval: I was under general anesthesia for retrieval. Transfer: We had a five-day transfer of two embryos (based on my age, Dr. Lannon recommends two embryo transfer; he will not transfer more than two at a time), followed by a pregnancy test (blood test) two weeks later. Follow up: The final appointment with Dr. Lannon was an eight-week ultrasound after which our care was transferred to our OB/GYN.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Boston IVF - The Maine Center. (Assigned nurse: Amy McLaughlin)
Amy was friendly, but at times too quick in her explanations regarding treatment or next steps. I appreciated that she was quick to return phone calls.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
As of March 2015: IVF $8,900 payment required in full before process began (included pre-op; follicle monitoring; serum hormone assays during stimulation; egg retrieval; sperm prep; anesthesia; transfer; post-op). Meds were not included in the above nor covered by our insurance and cost ~$6,000. Embryo freezing: $1,750. Other fees (we did not incur): $2,500 ICSI; $500 anesthesia at transfer; $1,000 assisted hatching. Cancellation reimbursement: $8,150 pre-stimulation; $6,400 before retrieval; $2,900 before transfer. Boston IVF provides financial aid to qualifying patients based on income (patients are required to submit two years of tax returns for review).

The clinic staff was friendly and did a great job at returning calls. Dr. Lannon is up front and honest (which honestly is what I wanted). He also demonstrated that he cares for his patients. He is always willing to answer questions, which is helpful in this stressful time...First IVF cycle we used Gonal F, cetrotide and the trigger shot. I was a low responder with low eggs retrieved...Second IVF cycle we added metope as well as an additional trigger. We retrieved 10 eggs
Sometimes it can hard to get in touch with [the Boston IVF] nurses when you have questions. However in general I did not have any issues with any of them...All self pay as we do not have insurance that covers: IUI ~5000 each IVF- 1st round ~13000 2nd round ~15000 (so far will have to pay for FET and storage fees too)...Communication could be better. Sometimes it’s hard to get a hold of people when you have questions. But I do feel that the clinic does a good job getting people in and working towards their goals of starting or explanding their families.

We did 3 IUIs with clomid that were failed cycles. First IVF cycle we used Gonal F, cetrotide and the trigger shot. I was a low responder with low eggs retrieved and only 1 fertilized and made it to blastocyst. We did a fresh transfer that failed. Second IVF cycle we added metope as well as an additional trigger. We retrieved 10 eggs but only 6 were nature. 3 fertilized and 1 made it to blastocyst. We plan to transfer that one later this year.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, he knows a lot.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Benjamin Lannon at Boston IVF - The Maine Center?
He made us feel validated. We were in our early 20s, many thought we weren't trying right and to be patient. He never once treated us like that and worked to figure out what was going on and to confirm we had an issue that time wouldn't fix.
Describe the protocols Benjamin Lannon used in your cycles at Boston IVF - The Maine Center and their degree of success.
Because we used donor sperm our cycles were probably a little easier than some. I would take clomid to amp up my egg production then go the day after a positive ovulation test to have the iui done. He initially started me on a lower dose of clomid to keep the chances of multiples at a lower rate as they run in the family. The last cycle we did which ended up working I took a slightly higher dose as the previous lower doses were potentially not enough

He [Dr. Lannon] is willing to get into the nitty gritty details of the science of treatment, but also the emotional aspects. He takes your whole picture into account. Has a great and appropriate sense of humor. ... He is extremely available for questions at any time and goes to bat for you to try to make things go as smoothly as possible. He helps you think through all your options and the pros and cons without pressuring you one way or the other. I don't know if I could have keep going with treatment without his support.
The front office staff [At Boston IVF] is not particularly friendly and I had a few very non-compassionate interactions. If you are deviating from their usual protocols things might get messed up and you have to be on top of things for yourself. Timing of monitoring is not flexible but they did always get me in pretty early so I wasn't too late for work. The ultrasound techs rotate in and are not specific to the clinic, so they are very different in what they tell you about what they are seeing which I found stressful.

The nurses were ok, I feel they could have been more responsive and organized. There were multiple miscommunications and mix ups. I did not get much emotional support from them.
Describe your experience with Boston IVF - The Maine Center.
The front office staff is not particularly friendly and I had a few very non-compassionate interactions.
