This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
[Dr. Jim Thompson] told me that he thought my chances were low several times which made me feel somewhat hopeless...is very knowledgeable in his work...saw him for a total of two visits (one diagnostic and one when I found out about my loss)...AFC and AMH were low but FSH was not high. Suggested IUI due to anticipated limited response to IVF stims.

Open on weekends for IUI and any urgent needs which was greatly appreciated. I was put on Clomid [by Dr. Jim Thompson] because I wasn't ovulating. I had hysterosalpingogram to evaluate tubes and was diagnosed with a blockage due to endometriosis. A laparoscopy was performed and lesions removed. Lupron for suppression of the endometriosis and to give me a clean slate so to speak. Now I'm trying iui for a few cycles before making the leap and beginning to save for ivf...He has an exceptional bed side manner, doesn't get annoyed when you ask a million questions, and doesn't make you feel rushed. The time you spend with him feels valuable because you have his full attention and feel like he genuinely wants to make this happen for you.
First visit [at Center for Reproductive Medicine of New Mexico] is roughly $250 for exam and ultrasound. Iui is around $500 per cycle...No long waits, no difficulty getting answers, and a genuine desire to help you. The whole staff is there for you and treat you with so much compassion. They anticipate your needs and questions and make sure you feel informed and excited for success...From the start the staff and doctor made extra efforts to know us personally. They remember details about us and not just facts on a chart.

I'm not at these steps yet but the doctor is very thorough.
He [Dr. Jim Thompson] was very real with us and provided us with all of the information we requested...he was always happy to answer questions. We never left feeling as though we didn’t understand what was going on. The only thing I would change is that he did give pushback in the beginning due to us being a younger couple, it was more so asking if we were really prepared and I felt that to be a bit off putting. I think it was more of a parental type discussion than a doctor patient discussion. But despite that we loved his bedside manner and great sense of humor.
They [nurses at The Fertility Center of New Mexico] were all very positive and kind...The one thing I didn’t like is the location. It is in the hospital in a rather inconvenient location. It definitely looks older inside but this doesn’t bother me because I know they have great success rates and I wasn’t uncomfortable in there...We did a frozen embryo transfer with genetic testing. We didn’t get the choice to transfer more than one because we only had one genetically normal embryo. The transfer went smoothly minus the very full bladder. This resulted in a full term healthy pregnancy.

He [Dr. Caperton] is very very thorough in his communication about the expectations, he is very clear about the process and what the future could hold, he's also very very available and replies to calls and emails almost instantly, literally within 5 minutes to an hour... We're going for as many eggs as possible so we have the largest pool of eggs from which to get normal embryos as possible. In my case, creating embryos was successful, above average successful, I stimulate very very well; even at 45 years old, I had 14 eggs retrieved. But we are looking for eggs that aren't too old to properly line up and are free of chromosomal abnormalities.
The first IVF cycle [at Center for Reproductive Medicine of New Mexico] cost $19,500 inclusive of all genetic testing...They are extremely well organized, super efficient and on time. They communicated very quickly, scheduled me, they are very personal, and easy to get ahold of. One of the best medical experiences I've ever had...Doctors attended to my every need, both the procedural needs, the treatment needs and questions as well as my physical comfort. When I felt uncomfortable, they went out of their way to schedule an office visit immediately and on a weekend.

Kind, personable. He [Dr. Caperton] puts you at ease by being silly and easy going. I wish he had more time after appointments to discuss results, next steps, etc. Its hard to ask questions/express concerns when you're half naked, laying on a table.... After diagnostics he prescribed 2.5mg letrozole for cycle days 5-9. I do not have any issues ovulating so no trigger shot was needed. The letrozole was just to help follicle production and to potentially shift ovulation towards the middle of the cycle instead of too late. We have male factor infertility so the iui was to help with that and my low cervical fluid.
Great location [Center for Reproductive Med of NM] and interior. Appears clean professional and welcoming. Great acess to bathrooms and waiting room is comfortable and welcoming. Sometimes can be cold, wear a jacket and socks to procedures. Easy to schedule appointments and have questions answered.... [Nursing Staff] Personable, knowledgeable, kind. Highly organized caring staff with excellent teamwork.... Diagnostic testing was covered by insurance 70%.

Diagnostic testing was covered by insurance 70%. My 30% for hysteroscopy was $190, for hsg $320. IUI was not covered but they gave a 25% discount. We paid $560. Appears to be cheaper than national averages of procedures.

He [Dr. Jim Thompson] was knowledgable and kind. Not the warmest person at first but neither am I or anyone in my family so I don't mind that. Trisha and Julia [nurses at Center for Reproductive Med of NM] were both totally professional, compassionate, and highly skilled. I also worked with Grace who is really new and seems hesitant but with those two experts to mentor her she has a golden opportunity... There is one admin there whose customer service training needs work. She is very short and has canned answers and ends calls with 'ok' click. I work in service and expect everyone I work with to close calls with 'thank you' and an offer of additional assistance.

Thompson shows his hopes and disappointments. I wish the treatment was more personalized but he sees me.... Dr Thompson was blunt but compassionate.... Thompson starts with a standard protocol for your diagnosis and adjusts while monitoring. Over the 4 years I’ve been with him he has made adjustments as studies have indicated to.... My first transfer was a success so we were all overconfident for the 2nd and 3rd. We’re back to plan for the worst hope for the best this 4th and last transfer.
The clinic [Ctr for Repro Med of NM] is private (location wise) and that’s a strength in my view. I wish they were better at suggesting therapy and support group. It’s also easy to forget that new patients are walking in scared and with no knowledge. They could slow down and make sure not to skip information.... All members of the nursing staff have been kind and helpful.... IVF is about $14,000 to the clinic. This does not include meds, genetic testing, or acupuncture. FET is $3,400 not including meds.

With me Dr Thompson has been cautious. He is more willing to do multiple embryos when you do not have other children.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
Avoid him
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?

Competent
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
The strength is that the administrative staff is professional and communicative. If you want personalized care, you will receive it here at a tradeoff. Dr. Thompson is not compassionate and quite gruff. It is not optimal for folks to come if they expect to be treated with respect.
What specific things went wrong at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
They failed to call us to let us know the results of testing. They also did not follow up with us to see if our IUI was successful.
I like that Dr Thompson is honest and clearly communicates the potential outcomes and doesn't give unreasonable expectations. I didn't see him for all iui procedures but felt that the other staff were well trained and capable of doing the procedure...He'll tell you the truth. It may not be what you were hoping to hear, but its better to know what you're up against.
[The Fertility Center of NM] Clinic feels pretty medical and not as warm as I've seen in pictures of other clinics. But I am glad that we are fortunate enough to have a clinic in our town and that the staff is so great. Communication so great and calls are always returned in a timely manner...he recommended moving on to ivf fairly quickly. We needed time to accept that and the office was kind and patient with us.

Dr Thompson and the staff at his clinic are kind and caring
Describe the protocols Jim Thompson used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of New Mexico and their degree of success.
We tried a few iui's with letrozole and later clomid. Because of my age and diminished ovarian reserve, he recommended moving on to ivf fairly quickly. We needed time to accept that and the office was kind and patient with us.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
We are a family where one partner is transgender. Dr. Caperton asked questions about genitals, surgery, and our sex life that had nothing to do with the procedure or care we were seeking. He could tell we were uncomfortable and we even told him it was none of his business, but he still continued to pry. He needs serious education about the LGBT community and respect...Dr. Caperton was completely unprofessional. He asked questions that were wildly inappropriate that had nothing to do with our procedures or situation. His inappropriate questions were due to his own curiosity and when we appeared uncomfortable or avoided these questions he would keep pressing for answers.
The nursing staff [at Center for Reproductive Medicine of New Mexico] was wonderful...The clinic is great...He [Dr. Caperton] needs serious education about the LGBT community and respect. I would not recommend him to my worst enemy. We ended up going to the clinic manager to request a transfer to the other Dr. After the first visit.
How was your experience with Lee Caperton at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
He asks completely inappropriate questions out of curiosity and is arrogant. He seems to think he is doing people a favor with his "gifts" rather than helping families bring children in to the world. He disgusts me.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lee Caperton at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
Don't go to him, there are other choices for care in Albuquerque.

All appointments [with Dr. Jim Thompson] felt rushed...I believe Dr Thompson is a good doctor. His clinic is very busy and I think he should only treat a few patients at a time. Also the wait for appointment was a little bit longer than other doctors...He did want to try one last transfer and even told me he would be willing to for free. At that point I was so heartbroken...he has had a fertility clinic since 1982. And definitely knows his stuff
[The Fertility Center of New Mexico is] Very busy, being one of two clinics in New Mexico. Dr. Caperton was articulate and forthright about the plan and likelihood of success and was very willing to address all of my concerns. He was warm and knowledgable in his specialty and he was able to quick diagnose my PCOS when I had 12 years of OB/GYNs who didn't diagnose me...
Everyone at the clinic [Center for Reproductive Medicine of New Mexico-Albuquerque] was warm and remembered me. I had one nurse the was my primary contact and was present for most of my appointments...They were on time, courteous, and excellent about getting my phone calls addressed efficiently...I had insurance that covered some of the cost so I believe the cost for me per cycle was about $250 for IUI with trigger shot

Dr. Thompson was very kind and throrough. He took the time to answer questions or concerns. He was knowledgeable and did not seem to rush to hurry on to the next patient. He took his time and made sure I felt comfortable and all my questions were answered.... I only saw Dr. Thompson once for an IUI, so I don’t have much familiarity with his protocols.
The clinic [Center for Reproductive Med of NM] is located in the basement of a hospital, so it isn’t ideal, but it is at least private. You don’t get the spa-feel, but the facilities are clean and comfortable. I would much rather the doctor be of high quality than the facilities be the more impressive feature.... [Dr. Jim Thompson] was personable...didn't seem to know many details about our history...communication and preparedness were lacking...felt like he was misrepresenting or omitting critical information to get us to just go along with what he recommended...did an initial consultation and evaluation including blood work, ultrasound, HSG (bubble test), and hysteroscopy.
[At The Fertility Center of New Mexico] Everything ran smoothly, easy to get in touch with people. No issues. Everything was clean and organized. Getting our records was expensive ($30) but easy...Sheila and the other nurses were great. Accessible for questions, caring, knowledgeable. Everything you want in a nurse.
How was your experience with Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
He seemed to be a competent doctor, insofar as he seemed to have enough medical knowledge to avoid seriously hurting patients. His communication and preparedness were lacking. He did not seem to have reviewed our file before we arrived. He skimmed paperwork and threw out odds of success with various treatments without connecting it to our specific characteristics, which made it seem like he was just pulling numbers out of thin air. He also claimed in his reports and in our initial consultation that we have less frozen sperm at our disposal than we truly have. When I later brought up concern about doing fully medicated FET when natural or modified natural seemed possible for me, he got very defensive. I brought up the possible increased risk of pre-eclampsia associated with fully medicated FET, plus the invasiveness, and he said "why even do IVF then?" because IVF is already associated with increased risk of birth defects. This, of course, is after he told us we didn't have enough sperm to do IUI (a doctor from a well-renound clinic out of state said we had enough for IUI). He then dismissed my concerns for my well-being as "not wanting to take shots" and claimed that all over the country doctors do what he does. Lots of clinics do natural or modified natural FET for good candidates, which I am. My new doctor is comfortable doing them. He also brought up scheduling as part of the problem. If he had just said "I don't have much experience doing natural FET so I can't guarantee the same results if we try it", I might have still transferred care, but I would have come away with a much more positive view of the doctor. All of our interactions with him felt like he was misrepresenting or omitting critical information to get us to just go along with what he recommended. This strikes me as deeply misogynistic coming from a person who exclusively serves women, especially women who are struggling with something as sensitive as infertility. I left there feeling like even if another doctor recommended the same protocol, but at least explained their rationale coherently, I'd feel better going forward with the treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
He is only comfortable doing fully medicated FET, so if you are a candidate for natural FET and you want that, don't waste your time with him unless you really have no other options.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
He was personable, but both times we saw him, he didn't seem to know many details about our history that would be relevant to our treatment.

I don't have strong opinions about the clinic, which probably bodes well. Everything ran smoothly, easy to get in touch with people. No issues. Everything was clean and organized. Getting our records was expensive ($30) but easy. It struck me as a little odd that they used condoms on the ultrasound probe, but maybe everyone does that?
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
About $1000 for the consultation and the initial evaluation.
Describe Jim Thompson's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
Standard single embryo preference

Describe the specific things that went wrong at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
It's just Dr. Thompson who seemed to have such a difficult time explaining his thought process or sharing accurate information. I also ended up having to talk to him about questions I had about our protocol while he was doing my hysteroscopy because it was implied that this would be my only chance. That was weird.
[Dr. Thompson] is quite knowledgeable about the treatment and the course of treatment I want to take but were relatively underprepared with how to discuss or approach me as a trans man pursuing egg harvesting. By the end of the appointment I felt respected and as if they had adjusted but I felt like I was a “surprise” at first...
[the Fertility Center of NM nurses] were friendly and straightforward. I felt relatively out of place at some instances but overall the nurses made a warm environment...I’m the location is great and private in the hospital. The clinic is well organized and feels very legitimate and safe. It’s hard to find your way around if you’re not being led by a nurse though. The clinic is well furnished and the rooms are comfortable and private.

During my consultation there was a nurse who I hadn’t spoken to much in the room which felt odd. There was an internal ultrasound used as well.

My consultation was approximately $250 with a $75 holding fee. The entire cost including medication for egg retrieval is apple $15,000 but the procedure at the clinic (not including medication) is about $10,000
How competent was The Fertility Center of New Mexico at LGBTQ+ care?
The staff seemed surprised by my status as an LGBTQ trans man initially but provided me all of the care I needed. They used white out to cover the word “female” on my intake form and the nursing staff were very kind with explaining my treatment and talking about my partner and I’s plans for fertility.
Describe your experience using 3rd party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier) at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
Dr. Thompson took time to explain everything to us and had a very gentle way of touching on sensitive subjects...he would stop to make sure my husband and I were ok emotionally before proceeding with more information...He is very good about explaining any sort of touch before he touched me and made me feel safe and confident in his work...talked me through difficult procedures like the HSG and hysteroscopy
One weakness [at The Fertility Center of New Mexico] is with the front of house staff. My husband called to get an initial appointment and the receptionist was not very helpful...She said that she would take his number and call back...finally on the third call, only after mentioning that we have been attempting to make an appointment did I feel like I got someone to pay attention and listen to what we needed...The HSG and hysteroscopy cost about $1200 and my husbands semen analysis was around $300. My IUI procedure was $700
How was your experience with Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
Dr. Thompson is very pleasant to work with. He always talked me through difficult procedures like the HSG and hysteroscopy so I knee what was going on and how much longer the procedure was going to last. He is very good about explaining any sort of touch before he touched me and made me feel safe and confident in his work. He would also check on my husband during procedures to make sure my husband was ok.

Write down and ask lots of questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico?
Dr. Thompson took time to explain everything to us and had a very gentle way of touching on sensitive subjects. Occasionally through the explanation of procedures or plan of care he would stop to make sure my husband and I were ok emotionally before proceeding with more information.
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
One weakness is with the front of house staff. My husband called to get an initial appointment and the receptionist was not very helpful in helping us to make the appointment. She asked what the appointment was for and we didn’t know what to say since it was our first appointment. She said that she would take his number and call back. He had to call back again a few days later and still was not able to get an appointment. I called myself and finally on the third call, only after mentioning that we have been attempting to make an appointment did I feel like I got someone to pay attention and listen to what we needed.
Another time I had a question about how to use my ovulation predictor kit and the receptionist said that all the nurses were busy and she said they would call be back but nobody ever called me back.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
The HSG and hysteroscopy cost about $1200 and my husbands semen analysis was around $300. My IUI procedure was $700.
He [Dr. Jim Thompson] helped me get my son, but when the other embryo stopped growing he showed no compassion. When I continued to lose every embryo we transferred he said, I’m not sure what’s going on your not fat. I asked if we could change to the other dr in the practice for our last 2 embryos I was told that wasn’t an option. Which is really disappointing because he wasn’t willing to change the protocol. So we transferred our last 2 embryos and ended up in the same boat! Miscarried both.
When we originally started at the clinic [Center for Reproductive Med-NM] we had a great relationship with a few of the nurses. By our last transfer the entire team had changed and we didn’t have a relationship with any of them. The practice has now spilt and capterton and Thomson are no longer together.... hen we saw no results we went on to IVF withICSI. I ordered a ton of shots but for whatever reason I responded very quickly! I had a possible 50 eggs to remove 😳 but they only retrieved 14.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Jim Thompson at The Fertility Center of New Mexico.
We spend 14,000 on our IVF 6,000 on meds, 5,000 per frozen transfer. That doesn’t include the cost of travel as we are 3 hours from the clinic.
