Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Hipp is always very quick to respond to questions and remembers personal details of life...Dr. Hipp reached out to me each time I had questions. She personally called to check on me after my D&C....We began seeing Dr Hipp after a miscarriage from an IUI. She encouraged us to do an IUI again with metformin, follistim , and ovidrel and switched me to letrozole. I was then placed on progesterone suppositories and baby aspirin after the procedure.
[Emory] Strengths: cheaper than other clinics. Easily reachable Weaknesses: not always organized...Helen was my main nurse but others would sometimes call. Helen was always very encouraging...Medications sent to discount pharmacy so much cheaper than imagined. Injectibles ranged from $85-$270. IUI procedure around $700 Ultrasounds and visits covered by insurance...Dr. Hipp is always very quick to respond to questions and remembers personal details of life
How was your experience with Heather Hipp at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr. Hipp reached out to me each time I had questions. She personally called to check on me after my D&C. She [Dr. Spencer] thoroughly went over my history with me to determine the best course of action. She let me know the chances of doing the IUI successfully were slim due to the fact that I have endometriosis. She let me know that IVF would probably be best to do but due to the cost I decided to try out the IUI ... The instructions I was given was specific to me and not generic. The fact that I have endometriosis was taken into consideration
What I like about Emory is that they were up front with the costs. I was not left in the dark not know what my bill would be. The only issue I had was waiting to get labs done, this took a very looooong time as the waiting area was always jam packed ... Emory clinic's approach is to do eSet ... The nurses were always nice and patient. They would always come back and reitierate what the doctor had gone over and also answer any additional questions

Dr. Hipp explained all possibilities thoroughly, and when things didn't go as planned, she took time to call in person to relay news and discuss possible solutions moving forward. Reviewed messages and answered those addressed directly to her, and answered very thoroughly.... Very supportive and understanding, Dr and staff... They let us choose [a single or multiple transfer] while also giving their professional opinion
[Emory is] Small, but state of the art facilities. Very professional, prompt responses to any questions and appointment calls. Clean. Privacy honored. Ideally located in midtown. Always available to answer questions... Nurse was more pen and paper based than electronic. All staff was always friendly, helpful, professional, and seemed to know what they were doing

Dr. Kawwass is good communicator and has warm bedside manners. She did explain the issue at hand and specified the risk associated with the process. Getting an appointment with the doctor is tough as she is quite busy....Clomid 24 Hr prior to process Injection in the stomach IUI... Clinic is quite neat and well maintained but is located in a sky scraper, the elevator of which is very annoying. The place is more expensive than other places so unless one is covered by Insurance one should look for other places

How was your experience with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
I think she genuinely cares for patients and knows a lot about drug regimens for good outcomes but doesn't know how to handle abnormal issues. She really dropped the ball with me towards the end of my cycle. The on-call doctors didn't make up for this either. So the entire team just didn't support me after the transfer when I was having issues.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
The care I received was great during egg retrieval and in the early stages of embryo transfer but deteriorated after transfer. During the last few weeks of transfer, I had a severe reaction to a drug that caused 102 degree fever for over two weeks, including the ten days after transfer, and no one, including the on call doctors and Dr. Kawwass, took my concerns seriously. No one mentioned that there was another formulation of the drug at a pharmacy that I could potentially try. They just kept telling me to keep trying to take the drug, even at a reduced dose. 7 days after the transfer, my husband used AI to ask if other formulations existed, and he found that it did. We called fertility pharmacies all over the country and one out of state sent us a new formulation that arrived two days later. I took two doses of it and had no reaction. I was clearly allergic to the other medication, but no one really took it seriously. I have wondered if I had not had a 102 degree fever for about eight days after transfer if my two embryos would have had a higher likelihood of surviving. I will never know, and that was my last chance of trying to become pregnant. I would not recommend Emory fertility for this reason - they didn't seem to take my concerns seriously during the most critical phase. I also lost more eggs that I should have during the thawing process, and the billing department has continuously screwed up my billing.
Describe your experience with Emory University Reproductive Center.
No coordination of care - all new providers didn't seem to know anything about me, from doctors to nurses, including those on call. You have to explain your situation and background every time - I guess there are no good notes in the system. You need to be a very outspoken advocate for yourself.
What specific things went wrong at Emory University Reproductive Center?

[Dr. Jennifer Kawwass] is a very smart doctor...stats and chances for each procedure...was a thorough assessment and she addressed all my concerns...goes by the textbook, and sticks to what will work based on objectives...is somewhat inflexible when you suggest something or explore deeper into issues
[At Emory University Reproductive Center the] Financial people are very slow to process everything and occasionally do not adjust balances...need to contact a few times to correct...no phone number to call, you must send a message is your first choice of communication...Nursing staff is well trained and appropriately informed about current conditions and plans
How was your experience with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
She is a very smart doctor. He is sure about what she knows as well as stats and chances for each procedure. After waiting for months, she still make me couple months more to be current on my shots before starting treatment at my first consult which I could have been informed while waiting 4 months.... time I don't have wasted..... There was a thorough assessment and she addressed all my concerns. After waiting over 6 months for the initial consultation, She has somewhat superhuman quality in terms of the speed of comprehension and decision making. Sometimes they are too fast that she leaves no room for what ifs. She is the director of the center and are very busy but always answers everything though their portal fast. My case is not one of those that follows typical patterns predictions so needed careful approach. She goes by the textbook, and sticks to what will work based on objectives; I felt that she is somewhat inflexible when you suggest something or explore deeper into issues until your cycle keeps failing. This might make sense to doctors but most self pay patients, this type of trial or taking chances cost thousands of dollars.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
She keeps it real and will be blunt about a lot of things. Also, she's not into small details like vitamins and supplements, sticks to what is known.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Emory reproductive center is very good responding to questions or concerns in timely manner even on weekends. They try to address all your insecurities appropriately.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kawwass used in your cycles at Emory University Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Gonal 450 Men150, I tried everything; long, short, flare, etc. Nothing really made any difference though.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Emory University Reproductive Center.
Nursing staff is well trained and appropriately informed about current conditions and plans. Sometimes some nurses not assigned to the doctor will reply and occasionally make mistakes on medication time, dosage, etc. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to stay on top of your treatment.
Describe your experience with Emory University Reproductive Center.
I have done several cycles there but she never did my retrievals and every retrieval my result was dramatically different. I do not like that the primary doctor does not do them. Financial people are very slow to process everything and occasionally do not adjust balances when prepayment is already made and treatments are done. You might end up with 5 digit balance due, need to contact a few times to correct. Also, there is no phone number to call, you must send a message is your first choice of communication.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center.
16000 IVF without PGT, 18500 with PGT. Embryo Transfer 4000 with assisted hatching
Describe Jennifer Kawwass's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Emory University Reproductive Center.
Single for testes, multiple for untested based on the guidelines

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Kawwass is very blunt, but she does make you feel taken care of. I do feel a little bit like a number, and I wish that her care was a bit more holistic...[new patient advice] Be ready to take notes, come informed, and ask a lot of questions. She is very smart and blunt, but you can meet her with being informed yourself so that you are not learning the basics there with her and can dig into more important questions or things that are specific to you.
[Emory University Reproductive Center] Strengths are that they have lots of appointments and seem to always be able to accommodate my scheduling needs. Weaknesses are that I do not feel like I have had enough time or personal experience with my doctor...If we pursue IVF the cost will be at least $20,000 per needed cycle. If we do an IUI that will be only around $1,000.00
How was your experience with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kawwass is very blunt, but she does make you feel taken care of. I do feel a little bit like a number, and I wish that her care was a bit more holistic. Sometimes I worry that she doesn't take into account our whole fertility picture, but it's hard to see considering we have not started treatment yet.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Be ready to take notes, come informed, and ask a lot of questions. She is very smart and blunt, but you can meet her with being informed yourself so that you are not learning the basics there with her and can dig into more important questions or things that are specific to you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kawwass is very blunt. She has been good so far, but I feel like her treatment could be more thorough. Overall I am happy with her care so far.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Emory University Reproductive Center.
Some of the nurses are super nice and helpful, while others just made me feel like I was a piece of meat walking through the office. I wish that they would be a bit more personal.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center.
If we pursue IVF the cost will be at least $20,000 per needed cycle. If we do an IUI that will be only around $1,000.00. It seems expensive, but variable.

  • Failed to order appropriate test
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Emory University Reproductive Center.
Once my husband was ordered to take a test and went to the location for the test, but the doctor/clinic had not actually called it in. This was an inconvenience for us as we had to physically return to the clinic and ask them to order the test for him, then physically return to the location for the test.

Unsuccessful
Dr Schirmer is very good at explaining biological issues. However, he does not know all the in's and outs of financial repercussions or timing of ordering prescriptions, so there was a lot of non-communication between him and his support staff...always ask follow-up questions and what if scenarios. "What are my next steps? Who should I contact? What if my medication doesn't come in time? If I miss an appointment or am 15 minutes late, what should I do?"
There are multiple [Emory University Reproductive Center] nurses that will read your messages in the portal. The portal does not allow a "reply" feature, and their names are not found in the portal...My insurance covered my first round, but very little medication. $7k total after insurance...[clinic error]They didn't submit orders to the pharmacy multiple times in my case. Which led to scraping my treatment half way through 1 round, and also having to delay another round.
How was your experience with David Austin Schirmer III at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr Schirmer is very good at explaining biological issues. However, he does not know all the in's and outs of financial repercussions or timing of ordering prescriptions, so there was a lot of non-communication between him and his support staff.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of David Austin Schirmer III at Emory University Reproductive Center?
always ask follow-up questions and what if scenarios. "What are my next steps? Who should I contact? What if my medication doesn't come in time? If I miss an appointment or am 15 minutes late, what should I do?"
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with David Austin Schirmer III at Emory University Reproductive Center?
The care team uses online portals to communicate, and were extremely poor at doing so. There were multiple nurses reading my messages, and they wouldn't read previous conversation threads, so they'd ask similar questions or not answer my questions. And it took at least 24 hours to receive any form of response. I would call their after hours line frequently with questions, and they'd respond with "i'll enter your question into the portal". Due to this poor communication, I had 2 months of cancelled treatment because I couldn't get prescriptions sent in time or ordered correctly. Horrible.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Emory University Reproductive Center.
There are multiple nurses that will read your messages in the portal. The portal does not allow a "reply" feature, and their names are not found in the portal. It is a nightmare. I've been to 2 other fertility places, and they both use better systems and communicate in a timely manner without shuffling cases.
Describe your experience with Emory University Reproductive Center.
The Clinic stinks. They forgot to take my payments, with-held treating me until the balance of my previous treatment was sorted out with my insurance, and they don't answer their phones. It feels like no one knows what they're doing because you can't reach them, or there are too many cooks in the kitchen.
Describe the costs associated with your care under David Austin Schirmer III at Emory University Reproductive Center.
My insurance covered my first round, but very little medication. $7k total after insurance

As a young terrified student with diminished ovarian reserve, I had millions of questions. Our experience with Dr. Kawwass was nothing less than grandiose, magnificent, and terrific. My husband and I were treated with loving care. We never felt like a number within the system.... Dr. Kawwass was always smiling and hugged me each time that she saw me. She even took the time to call me herself at times.... I think I saw Dr. Kawwass tear up lol but do not tell her that I said that. IVF SUCCESS on the first try Amazing Staff Four months pregnant
Everything [Emory U] was so organized and squeaky clean. There was never an issue with getting an appointment. My husband and I paid out of pocket for IVF. It was worth every penny....We never felt like a number within the system. Claudia always greeted us with a smile even at 7:00 AM in the mornings. The patient ladies who drew my blood were amazing, and I am a difficult stick. The nurse, Michelle, she was a pure angel.

Everything was so organized and squeaky clean. There was never an issue with getting an appointment. My husband and I paid out of pocket for IVF. It was worth every penny. They didn't behave like cash cows and was after people's money. It was evident that they wanted success for others and their families. They understood due to the high stakes and the emotions that come along with trying to conceive. They never got upset when I had so many questions. Boy did I have questions, and they were right there.

So far I have only had one appointment with Dr Schirmer and he was very thorough. He explained each test and procedure he would like done and explains WHY and WHAT it would tell us. He also described a possible plan of action based on various possible results. He did say he ultimately felt like a more aggressive approach would be recommended in my case but at the end of the day we could do whatever I am comfortable with. I believe many others may consider him to be a fast talker however...
The clinic [Emory] was very organized. I appreciated getting a buzzer that let me know I was being called back instead of my name being yelled across a lobby. The staff at the front desk was kind and greeted me as I approached...Meeting with Tadzia after our consult gave us a chance to further discuss the testing that was needed and ask any other questions we may have had. She was very thorough and kind.

How was your experience with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kawwass is kind and compassionate and was also direct with our chances and what to expect. She is very knowledgeable and made us feel so comfortable with the decisions we had to make. I remember meeting with her for the first time without my husband and she sat with me for so long. She didn’t seem rushed or like she had to move on to the next patient. Even though she sees so many people every year struggling to get pregnant she still has a deep sense of compassion and I felt truly cared for.

The only advice I would give is to make sure you book an appointment with her!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?

One thing I love about Emory reproductive is the multiple locations they have to get lab work and ultrasounds done. Their Clifton locations was right across the street from my work which made appointments so much easier to manage. They were always really accommodating to my schedule and understanding of getting me in for an appointment when it worked for me. The front desk, financial advisor and RN’s were wonderful. Over the years we went there we were able to meet other physicians in the group and they were all SO wonderful!

Dr. Hipp is amazing from the first appointment to the last. She was very thorough on what to expect as well as a treatment plan and always willing to answer questions. We some hiccups in treatment, insurance reasons, and she adjusted our treatment so that we would achieve the ultimate goal.... Due to insurance they required 6 failed IUI’s before they would cover any IVF treatment, even though the odds of them working was very low. After the 6 failed IUI’s I completed 1 round of IVF and transferred 1 frozen embryo.
This isn’t specific to Dr. Hipp, but more to Emory that it is a teaching hospital for some things you may see Doctors completing residency or they may shadow Dr. Hipp. This was never an issue for me as I knew they were treating me based on actual research.... I previously went to a fertility clinic and met with a physician that never answered questions then pushed me off to another room with a folder that included pricing hidden in the back without any plan. I left that facility with more questions then when I arrived. I then found Dr. Hipp at Emory and the first time going to the office everyone was so inviting and kind as was Dr. Hipp. She answered all of mine and my husbands questions and was very detailed of what to expect and provided a treatment plan. Her and the staff were always accessible if we had questions. Everyone was respectful and caring at Emory and I am great full for them.

I felt like I was treated like a person. She [Dr. Kawwass] always followed up with me and made sure I knew what was going on. I didn't see her a lot (due to Covid), but we Zoomed and emailed. She made sure I knew what problems we faced and if course needed to be changed, she explained why...She followed up and was always cognizant of finances. She checked in on a profession and emotional level
Hard to get to. [the Emory University Reproductive Center] Parking deck is a nightmare. Even if you live close, it is time consuming to get through the building. She [Dr. Heather Hipp] is such a kind-hearted person. No matter what time of day, if I have any questions, I send her an email and she is super quick to respond. She shows how genuinely she cares about you and the rough process you are going through.... We have only been seeing her for a couple of months, but our first visit with her we already knew that she was going to be the dr we choose. She truly shows how much she cares, and puts everything into the end goal, which is to get a successful pregnancy.
Overall, clinic [Emory University] is great. However, I did have an issue regarding the financial coordinator. I was trying to contact her to ask how much my appt would be out of pocket and she didn't reach out to me until after my appointment.... She [Dr. Heather Hipp] is such a kind-hearted person. How was your experience with Jacqueline Christine Lee at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr. Lee's "bedside manner" is excellent. She is easy to have a conversation with and she explains complex topics well. She listened to my priorities and developed a treatment plan that honored those priorities. As a PCOS patient with a family history of preeclampsia, I was nervous about overstimulation during egg retrieval and nervous about fully medicated transfer cycles and future risk of preeclampsia. Dr. Lee kept me safe during egg retrieval with low dose medications over a longer period of time. She also drew on her knowledge from my IUI/ovulation induction cycles to offer a natural transfer cycle. Both my egg retrieval and transfer were well-tolerated. Overall, Dr. Lee has an excellent memory or perhaps takes excellent notes with strong prep, because I never felt as though I knew more about the care plan than she did. Dr. Lee is authentic and it was an unexpected joy during fertility treatments to be her patient.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jacqueline Christine Lee at Emory University Reproductive Center?
I would absolutely encourage a prospective patient to choose Dr. Lee. I did not go to the practice with a specific provider in mind, but I was put on Dr. Lee's schedule. I am so grateful for how it worked out.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jacqueline Christine Lee at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr. Lee developed a treatment plan that prioritized what was most important to me and kept me safe the whole way through.
Describe the protocols Jacqueline Christine Lee used in your cycles at Emory University Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
During my IUI cycles, we utilized letrozole and ovidrel to stimulate ovulation. For egg retrieval, we used an antagonist protocol with lower doses of Follistim and Menopur. We utilized a lupron trigger to minimize overstimulation risks and also planned to freeze all embryos for the same reason. My stimulation cycle was 13 days and we had 20 mature-sized follicles at trigger. On egg retrieval day, Dr. Lee retrieved 36 eggs, 28 mature. They were fertilized using ICSI and 24 successfully fertilized. Ultimately, 7 blastocysts were made and sent for PGT-A testing. We had 4 embryos after PGT-A. Recovery from the egg retrieval was surprisingly good and I attribute that to the steps taken to minimize my risks by Dr. Lee and her team. The first embryo was transferred in a modified natural cycle using my IUI drug regimen (letrozole + ovidrel). The first transfer resulted in an ongoing clinical pregnancy. The remaining embryos will remain frozen for potential future pregnancies.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Emory University Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Kristina)
Kristina was always thorough, giving further instructions over the phone to allow for live Q&A and then also followed up in writing for my records/reference. She was competent and friendly.
Describe your experience with Emory University Reproductive Center.
The clinic is truly a 7-day a week operation. I had an IUI on Easter Sunday and the waiting room was busy. Appointments were offered early enough so that I never had to miss work during treatment, with the exception of my procedure days. The clinic treats patients as individuals. I was lucky enough to usually have my provider as my proceduralist (both for retrieval and for transfer), but the clinic's whole provider complement is extremely talented with great bedside manner. The clinic also has an excellent collaboration with a fertility pharmacist at Emory who helps with the medication needs and probably saved me so much money and hassle.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jacqueline Christine Lee at Emory University Reproductive Center.
I was an insured patient and these number reflect my insurance company's payments. Egg retrieval including biopsy for PGT-A and embryo freezing was $15,000 for physician and lab services. Medications are not included in that figure. Embryo transfer was $4,850 for physician and lab services. Medications were about $120 total for transfer. IUI cycles cost $600 for the actual IUI and then monitoring ultrasounds and blood draws were covered by medical insurance, not fertility coverage.
Describe Jacqueline Christine Lee's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Emory University Reproductive Center.
There was a strong recommendation based on my history, age, and diagnosis that only single embryo transfer was appropriate.

Dr Kawwass completely turned my fortune around...very efficient and straightforward...started with a hysteroscopy to remove a fibroid...fresh transfer, stimmed with menopur and follistim, triggered with Novarel. Ganirelix was used in the protocol. I used estrogen patches to prep and PIO

How was your experience with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr Kawwass completely turned my fortune around. I went from no hope and failure to success on the first round and success on attempt #2 on the second round. She's incredibly accomplished but also personable. I was very fortunate to have been her patient.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
To relax and embrace the eventuality that she's going to succeed at a faster rate than most. She has a data driven approach which I find reassuring. She is really skilled at predicting how things are going to unfold with impressive precision.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center?
Dr Kawwass listens and she is also very efficient and straightforward. She would call you up on the phone to work on a plan and she works tirelessly. She even made sure I got the date I needed for surgery prior to the transfer. It felt like a personalized service. You can't help but believe that she's going to resolve the issue and achieve success. I felt like I could relax because she had everything under control because she connected her cases to the actual person.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Kawwass used in your cycles at Emory University Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
The first time, Dr Kawwass started with a hysteroscopy to remove a fibroid. Then she went for a fresh transfer, stimmed with menopur and follistim, triggered with Novarel. Ganirelix was used in the protocol. I used estrogen patches to prep and PIO. The patches was to prevent an accumulation of fluid in my uterus. For my second born, the protocol was similar but higher dosage. It was a hybrid that she devised. I was prepped for a fresh transfer but she transferred a frozen embryo from the first cycle.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Emory University Reproductive Center.
They were a lovely group of people. Very friendly and compassionate.
Describe your experience with Emory University Reproductive Center.
Strengths are they are research based and cutting edge. It was easier for me to visit their location close by to my home so that helped. Weaknesses are their disorganised billing process and the midtown parking. That said they do offer parking vouchers for your treatment course.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Kawwass at Emory University Reproductive Center.
My coverage was good. I paid 25% (5-6k) and the second time, I had met my OOP Max prior so my responsibility was 0%.
Describe Jennifer Kawwass's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Emory University Reproductive Center.
Dr Kawwass' policy was either to replace a single euploid tested or multiple untested.
