Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Gustin chose IUI for us as my husband sperm count and shapes are very low and abnormal. He had varioceles that could be repaired, but due to his work schedule, wasn’t able to take off time to recover from surgery. Dr Gustin suggested this as a way to continue to try for pregnancy before his surgery...She remembered things about us, what we like, where we work, etc and modified things based on who we are. There was an appointment in which I left very upset, and she took time in her super busy clinic schedule to FaceTime me, go over my imaging and decided on a new treatment plan. As a nurse that works in a different specialty clinic, this is a rarity. I was very impressed
I liked that when our initial appointment was over, we met with the financial counselor [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine]. She had looked up our insurance and had print outs of what each thing would approximately cost (varies based on medication). I could tell the staff got a long really well, so they always seemed to be in a good mood. My husband did say that the sperm analysis clinic was a little outdated, and he felt like he could hear people outside of the room talking. He brought headphones the next time, so that made it better. Considering what he had to do in there, I’m not sure there’s much to suggest to improve that.
How was your experience with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I think Stephanie was extremely relatable. I felt super comfortable asking any kind of question, no matter how “silly.” Before leaving every visit, she made sure we understood and would always say “please text me or call me” and we had her personal number. She always seemed have a very good rapport with the other clinical staff. Even though the IUI’s didn’t work for us, we 100% would have continued treatment with her had we not moved out of the area.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Don’t be afraid to ask a question, give your opinion or input. She will make your plan work with your schedule, and she will answer all of your questions with no judgment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Stephanie consistently would look my husband in the eye while discussing treatment and other information. She remembered things about us, what we like, where we work, etc and modified things based on who we are. There was an appointment in which I left very upset, and she took time in her super busy clinic schedule to FaceTime me, go over my imaging and decided on a new treatment plan. Describe the protocols Stephanie Gustin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For the 2 cycles of IUI, I was put on Femara 5 mg, for 3 days. I don’t recall what day of my cycle I started them, however. My labs were all with normal range and my cycles are fairly regular, so she expected a good response from a low dose of femara. After I finished the femara, I was monitored pretty frequently to note follicle count with ultrasound. This was done by an RN. Once I had follicles at 16-18 mm, I was directed when to take the “trigger shot.” This was ovidrel, I do not recall the dosing on that; but it’s a quick subcutaneous injection to stimulate your follicle to release. About 36 hours later, my husband went to the clinic to leave his sperm. They spun that down to get only the sperm, and then prepare it to be transferred. An RN did the procedure, which I thought was odd. The second cycle was extremely similar, except I was monitored quite as much as we knew how I would respond. Dr. Gustin chose IUI for us as my husband sperm count and shapes are very low and abnormal. He had varioceles that could be repaired, but due to his work schedule, wasn’t able to take off time to recover from surgery. Dr Gustin suggested this as a way to continue to try for pregnancy before his surgery.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
We had two nurses that were amazing; extremely knowledgeable and kind. None of the nurses were ever rude or not willing to help, but didn’t always seem willing to explain things in depth. I feel because I’m a nurse, I want to know what my labs should be, what it means when it’s not normal, how I can change it, etc. The nurse I had during my IUI didn’t explain things well, and always seemed preoccupied with what was going on at the nurses station.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
It’s a private clinic and I had health insurance through my hospital job; so it wasn’t “in-network.” I felt like most things were fair in cost; however, the actual “artificial imsemination” was charged as a surgical procedure, despite being performed solely by an RN, with no imaging, or any equipment other than a syringe and catheter.
Describe Stephanie Gustin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Did not have serious conversations about IVF with Dr. Gustin before moving. She did bring up being more likely to do single embryo over multiple, but we did not get I depth with that conversation as that wasn’t what we working at.

How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Maclin has always been the one to call and deliver results. She has been very delicate in her delivery. We started the process in January 2018 and my uterine infection didn’t clear up until June and then I got c diff from all the antibiotics so it pushed us back another 2 months until August. My cycle started earlier than planned so they were going to push me back even further. I left a message to Dr. Maclin crying about the setback and she called back right away and squeezed me into the schedule so I could stay on track. After my egg retrieval I got very sick and she got me in first thing the next morning and kept me at the clinic for 3 hours on fluid to make sure I was okay and then called me later in the day to see how I was doing. When I got my pgs results back, they weren’t good, but she remained positive and told me that if the one normal embryo we got didn’t work we will try a different protocol for the next round. She also doesn’t make me feel stupid or like I’m a burden when I constantly call asking questions or expressing my concerns.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Ask more about the outcome of PGS and what can be done to help improve the outcomes.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Maclin has been so kind and empathetic especially when I had to go through 5 painful endometrial biopsies because I had an infection that wouldn’t clear up. She made me feel better and is very gentle in her approach when delivering bad news.
Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Dr. Maclin used the antagonist protocol. 150 iu gonal f in the morning and 1 vial menopur in the evening. On the 4th day my menopur was increased to 2 vials. I added in cetrotide on the 5th day and triggered with hcg and Lupron on the 10th day. Lupron was added to prevent ohss. I had over 40+ follicles but less than half matured. My estrogen stalled. My Dr. told me next retrieval I will start on a higher dose of meds, but she started low this time to help prevent ohss since I have pcos. I ended up with 17 eggs retrieved, 14 mature, 9 fertilized w/icsi and 6 blasts. Only 1 chromosomally normal and one inconclusive. I am now on Vivelle patches- changing them every other day (10 weeks) and estrace 2 x day (for 30 days), will start pio (continue to 10 weeks) on cycle day 10 and transfer on cd 16.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The nurses have always been super nice. Especially Dani, she always calls me back after I leave a message and is so nice and courteous. The nurses who draw my blood are great too and always try to joke and keep the mood in good spirits. The anesthesiologist was the only one who I felt a little uncomfortable around but she wasn’t horrible just not as welcoming as the others.
Describe your experience with Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The only downside is trying to get a hold of the nursing staff. Every time I call with questions I have to leave a message. I always get a call back the same day but it can get frustrating. The front desk is easier to get a hold of but they know nothing about existing patients or their treatments. They are mainly there to set up new consults. The clinic itself is clean and welcoming. They also give there patients pictures of the embryos which is awesome. They also allowed me to take picture during each visit except the egg retrieval. No pictures were allowed. Also my husband was not allowed to go back with me. He had to stay in the waiting room while I was prepped and everything else. They didn’t even update him during the procedure.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I had no costs except for a $35 consult fee and $30 copay for each biopsy. My ivf cycle was covered by my insurance however I did ask about out of pocket cost and it was $1400 for iui and $1500 for full ivf cycle. My meds were covered as well except for the Lupron but my clinic sent a coupon to the pharmacy which took $400 off the cost.
Describe Victoria Maclin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I wanted to originally transfer 2 embryos but my dr said with my age being under 35 (I’m 33) and them being pgs tested that she only recommended one and didn’t feel comfortable transferring more. However I got 2 embryos back from pgs. One normal and one inconclusive. She said the inconclusive looked so bad that she didn’t think it would survive long term freeze or another biopsy so instead of destroying it she offered to transfer it along with the normal. She normally does not transfer more than one pgs tested normal embryo.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Getting results has been a challenge. I have had to call and bug the staff to get results. I will be told am going to get results by a certain day and that day will have come and gone and no call so I will call the next day and leave a message and will eventually get a call at the very end of the day with either the results or “we haven’t gotten them yet”.

Dr. Gustin showed that she really cared about me and adapted treatment for my specific situation...super sharp, trained at Stanford, and has a lot of knowledge. She is flexible, doesn't just color by the numbers, adapts treatment protocols to the needs of the patient, and was able to call out things that all 3 of the doctors I went to before have missed. She had a different protocol that helped me get pregnant.
Heartland is reasonably priced, accepts a variety of insurances, and a down to earth, caring clinic. The staff and the doctors make the difference. I don't feel like a number there. I feel like a person that everyone has gotten to know through my struggles, and though I have not yet found success, I know how much they are pulling for me, and how disappointed they are when I experience setbacks and losses.

Dr. Gustin showed that she really cared about me and adapted treatment for my specific situation. She trained at Stanford under Ruth Lathi and practices evidence-based medicine. But she is flexible with treatment options and protocols and willing to tailor to individual needs, and at time to use empiric treatments if I requested.

Jo Jay, the billing coordinator at Heartland, is gold, and worked to assess insurance coverage, and to bill insurance for me. Heartland takes a variety of insurances, unlike some more "exclusive" fertility clinics, and a lot of my treatments were covered by insurance.

[Dr. Victoria Maclin] she is knowledgeable and was very helpful when we were looking for options to increase our sperm count before IVF treatment. Even though we still have to do IVF, it felt like she heard our desire for other treatments prior to IVF, and provided opportunities to at least decrease the problem...[she] has said she prefers single vs. multiple embryo transfer typically as multiples can have other, sometimes dangerous, side effects
Everyone at the [Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine] clinic is always very friendly and happy to answer questions or point us in the right direction. The only downfall is sometimes the front desk wants to charge a lower copay than my insurance requirement, which causes an extra bill later...I have insurance that is covering most of my costs, so I only have copays for every visit ($50) and 20% of the retrieval procedures ($850)

Any patient needs to advocate for themselves, ask questions. If she doesn't know the answers she will find them for you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I feel like when we talk she knows who I am, what my treatment plan is, what next steps should be, etc. without prompting. When I have called with questions or concerns she or the nurses call back promptly to answer my questions & help me feel at ease.

Our first round of IVF we did some typical stims, however we did not have any eggs make it to blastocyst stage. Before the next round of IVF we are doing 3 months of Zoladex to reduce an endometriosis spot, hopefully this will increase the quality of eggs. She is also doubling the dose of the stims for the next round too.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Sheryl)
Sheryl was friendly and always made sure to tell us what she was seeing & how much the eggs were growing at the ultrasound appointments. One day when she didn't have a chance to call me for follow up during their office hours, she texted that evening to see how I was doing and answer any questions we had.

At my initial consult Gustin was very warm and welcoming. ... She listened to my concerns and was quick to come up with a plan to help me (laparoscopy). After my laparoscopy I never saw or heard from her again though. Throughout my entire IUI process I only got to communicate with nurses. She didn’t even do my IUI, which really upset me.
... One nurse [at Heartland Cntr for Repro Med] would call and tell me the info and then 20 minutes later another nurse would call and tell me the same thing. It just seemed so unorganized. ... Billing was a nightmare. I had to constantly call my insurance to get accurate information and relay that to the billing lady, Jo. She wasn’t honest about my coverage and tried to charge me more than I owed multiple times. ... A few weakness are that the clinic is a little confusing to navigate the halls are long and look the same. It’s also a bit dated and not very modern. Lastly the consultation room and ultrasound rooms are little small. Some strengths were that it was very clean, accommodating, and functional
How was your experience with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
As I said, my first impression was terrific. She treated me well and listened to my concerns and even agree with me about what I thought was going on with my body. After my surgery though, I just became a number to her. It was so frustrating and honestly I feel like I wasted so much time and money there.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
at your first consult be sure to express that you’d like to stay in contact throughout this process. That you expect HER to do the procedures and listen to requests about dosing. Stand your ground. I wish I had.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
At my initial consult Gustin was very warm and welcoming. We had some small talk and then she got straight to business. She listened to my concerns and was quick to come up with a plan to help me (laparoscopy). After my laparoscopy I never saw or heard from her again though. Throughout my entire IUI process I only got to communicate with nurses. She didn’t even do my IUI, which really upset me.
Describe the protocols Stephanie Gustin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
At my consult Gustin decided that I had a 70% chance of having endometriosis. We decided on a laparoscopy followed by a couple months of Lupron. After that she put me on 7.5 mg of Femara and 200 IU of Follistim for my IUI. Due to last treatments I knew I responded very quickly to medications and I told her that before. I made a note that I was nervous the dosing was too high and that I was going to react too fast and not make quality eggs. Well, I had a 20 mm follicle on day 4 of injections. Way too soon. She still insisted I continue to take the dosing and by the time ordered me to trigger I had one overmature follicle (35 mm) and another barely mature (17 mm). I was livid. My lining looked good from the get go, so her plan of action was just negligent.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
They seemed sweet, but every appointment I had to remind them what I was there for. They never seemed organized and also didn’t give detailed directions about my injections. Since I couldn’t ever reach my doctor they were my only lifeline and honestly I learned more and had more support from a support group on Facebook. Also, when they’d call back to answer questions or to relay lab work numbers they always called twice. One nurse would call and tell me the info and then 20 minutes later another nurse would call and tell me the same thing. It just seemed so unorganized.
Describe your experience with Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
A few weakness are that the clinic is a little confusing to navigate the halls are long and look the same. It’s also a bit dated and not very modern. Lastly the consultation room and ultrasound rooms are little small. Some strengths were that it was very clean, accommodating, and functional.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I can’t even recall the exact amount because I had to purchase extra medications multiple times. The IUI itself (not even performed by the doctor) was around $800.
Describe Stephanie Gustin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
This was not discussed.

Billing was a nightmare. I had to constantly call my insurance to get accurate information and relay that to the billing lady, Jo. She wasn’t honest about my coverage and tried to charge me more than I owed multiple times. She blamed my insurance every single time.

Dr. Gustin was open to my opinion, however she suggested using one embryo at a time for how small I am. She wanted to wait on how many embryos we got and the quality...takes the time to listen to me as a patient. She showed empathy when I was worried about getting time off from work and gave me advice on what to tell my supervisor... I appreciate that she took her time during surgery to remove my endometriosis and get me prepared for my IVF cycle. I am glad I found an aggressive doctor that knows whats best for me.
Strengths [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine]: Calling you with results, ordering medications, & scheduling appointments. They get to know you as a patient and can check you in without asking your name. (not sure if this is a good thing or not) Weaknesses: Close early & bills can sometimes be off...nurses are always willing to answer any questions...I usually always had the same nurse to do my ultrasounds during stims. This was nice because I got to know her well and felt comfortable with her. I think this is important because they get to know your story.
How was your experience with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Gustin is very honest and tells you how it is. I had surgery with her in December and prior she told me what risks I could be taking and what she might have to remove during surgery to prepare me. She told me it would be a 3 hour surgery and it actually turned out to be 5 hours. I appreciate that she took her time during surgery to remove my endometriosis and get me prepared for my IVF cycle. I am glad I found an aggressive doctor that knows whats best for me.

Both embryos weren’t making it to blastocyst stage but Dr. Gustin wanted to give them a chance and transferred both. I took progesterone in oil injections and estrogen during this time as well. It resuslted in a negative transfer...I felt so terrible from the stimming, I wish I would have done a frozen transfer. My body didn’t feel ready. But I don’t understand why we had to do it that way...lack of innovative approaches. There was no discussion about growth hormone, antibiotics, LDN treatment etc. and even nutrition to help with inflammation and low AMH. I had to discover all of this on my own and look for another potoential doctor who is informed about these methods. A strength is the care and professionalism of the doctors and staff. It’s a clean and nice facility.

How was your experience with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
She was great. Kind, caring and thorough. Didn’t sugar coat anything but also delivered information in an appropriate manner. I felt safe and in good hands with her. I do feel the industry as whole follows a “protocol” and I need a different clinic with some more innovation approaches and thought processes
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
if you have the funds to see her, great! She will listen and do her very best for you. Be aware they don’t do much hormone testing outside of the basic IVF protocols.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I felt I was treated with kindness. The nurses and doctors always responded right away to my questions
Describe the protocols Stephanie Gustin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
It’s somwhat difficult to recall because as a patient, you are overwhelmed by all the information coming at you and also what your body is going through under treatment. I did not do any birth control priming since I have low AMH. Dr. Gustin wanted to get the best result she could from my follicles. I took Clomid, gonal F and Menopur during my stimming. Did the HCG tigger and egg retrieval procedure. 8 eggs were retrieved and only 4 were mature enough for Fertilization. ICSI was performed and 3 Fertalized. Were were planning a frozen transfer and PGS testing but only 2 embryos were progressing. So we didn’t do the PGS and did a fresh transfer on day 5. Both embryos weren’t making it to blastocyst stage but Dr. Gustin wanted to give them a chance and transferred both. I took progesterone in oil injections and estrogen during this time as well. It resuslted in a negative transfer

Describe your experience with Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
we can’t afford to do another cycle at this clinic but for those who have the means then I would suggest trying out the clinic if they don’t want to travel out of state. So a weakness for most facilities and I include this one is the astronomical prices they charge for treatments. Doctors are suppose to “do no harm” and I believe that also can apply to a patients pocket book. There are clinics out there that charge less but you to really do your research and it’s not feasible for everyone to travel. Another weakness is the lack of innovative approaches. There was no discussion about growth hormone, antibiotics, LDN treatment etc. and even nutrition to help with inflammation and low AMH. I had to discover all of this on my own and look for another potoential doctor who is informed about these methods. A strength is the care and professionalism of the doctors and staff. Approximately $25,000-30,000 We did not do the PGS testing which brought the loan down under $25,000. A couple grand for medications Also with our one iui treatment-$2,000
Describe Stephanie Gustin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
My only 2 embryos were transferred to give them the best chance and better odds. I felt so terrible from the stimming, I wish I would have done a frozen transfer. My body didn’t feel ready. But I don’t understand why we had to do it that way

Dr. Maclin seems very knowledgeable about fertility treatments. She was able to answer all my questions. However, I never really felt a personal connection to her. While I was going through my miscarriage, I never felt a whole lot of empathy for my situation.... I had my TSH result come back elevated. After being on Synthroid for a few weeks, my doctor re-tested it. She never called with the results but did call in refills on my prescription. I know I could have called and asked but it would have been nice to get a phone call from them.
The nursing staff at Heartland is phenomenal! They are compassionate, they remembered me, they always checked in on how I was doing.... The clinic is great! Clean, conveniently located (for me at least), lots of parking. I have no complaints about the clinic as a whole. Their hours are 7 am to 3 pm, and I could usually get appointments in the early morning so I could finish up before work.... Dr. Maclin seems very knowledgeable about fertility treatments.

While she seems to know what she's doing, if you want someone who you feel you can trust and turn to with the silliest problems, you may want to look elsewhere.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
While it did seem that Dr. Maclin really cared and wanted to help me get pregnant, she did not seem to always remember me or my particular case. I never really felt a personal connection with her.
Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I did femara plus a trigger shot for three IUIs. First round was 5 mg, the next two were at 7.5 mg. After three failed rounds, Dr. Maclin suggested IVF but I wanted to try IUI with injectables. I did one round with 5 mg femara plus 75 IUs of gonal-f.

Dr. Constance sat down and talked to us and was very open with her expectations. She made my husband and myself feel like we were heard, and a part of our treatment in regards to decision making. ... She found scar tissue and we scheduled a hysteroscopy to remove it. ... She was very through and informative the entire time. ... I have never felt anything other than compassion and understanding and a general desire to help us get pregnant as much as we desire it.
We were given a cost sheet at our consult appointment [Heartland Center for Repro Meed] and told of costs our insurance would and would not cover. We were told to be prepared to pay a certain amount at our visits. We were also sent an updated cost sheet at the beginning of the year for IUI totals. ... The nurse's have been great and we've had zero problems. ... We have loved all the nurses we've talked to and encountered.
How was your experience with Elizabeth Constance at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
From the very first consultation Dr. Constance made us feel heard and listened to. She started the visit by apologizing for our loss and telling us how terrible it is. Every visit she makes us feel comfortable and explains treatment in detail. She sat with me before a surgery and answered every question I had. She held my hand during surgery until I fell asleep. She was there the entire time after I woke up. I have never felt anything other than compassion and understanding and a general desire to help us get pregnant as much as we desire it.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Elizabeth Constance at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
She is more than willing to answer questions so come prepared with as many as you want and she will be more than willing to answer them.

Dr. Constance sat down and talked to us and was very open with her expectations. She made my husband and myself feel like we were heard, and a part of our treatment in regards to decision making. We have a loss at 22 weeks and she listened and made us feel like she had compassion and was truly sorry for our loss.
Describe the protocols Elizabeth Constance used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
After the initial consult, I had an ultrasound so Dr. Constance could view the uterus with water inside. She found scar tissue and we scheduled a hysteroscopy to remove it. I was placed on medication to help heal the uterus and we met again after the surgery and she told us she wanted to repeat the ultrasound at the start of my next cycle to make sure the uterus was looking as good as could be after surgery. She was very through and informative the entire time. Due to my pre-term labor history using injections, Dr. Constance told us from the very beginning she was adamant against the use of injectables due to the high chance I would become pregnant with multiples. We obviously didn't want another pre-term labor, and the chance of multiples goes up dramatically on injections so she opted to have us use an oral medication instead.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
We have loved all the nurses we've talked to and encountered. They have been very helpful, inviting, compassionate and we've had no problems.

There was a scheduling error made by mistake. Dr. Constance called me herself to verify, and within a half hour called me back to inform me the mistake had been fixed on their end and all was good. She [Dr. Stephanie Gustin] meets with us personally, called us personally to tell us we were pregnant, and has been available during the whole process.... She has been more than a doctor to us. She has been a listening ear, a friend, and truly a part of our journey. We love Dr. Gustin! We could never thank her enough for who she is and what she has done for us!... I was on varying levels of menopur, and she changed my dosage to get better results. I wish I could remember specifics but it was 2 years ago. The team at Heartland staffed our case regularly when we weren’t having success and adjusted along the way.
They [the staff at Heartland Center for Repro Med] are organized and seem to have a good handle on the processes and procedures. The billing department sometimes seems to be unorganized or hard to get ahold of, but that would be my only complaint.... Our IUI treatments were roughly $5000 each round with shots and ultra sounds included, our IVF rounds were $15,000 each round, with one additional transfer that was roughly $4000.
How was your experience with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Gustin is smart, caring, and trustworthy. We owe her our miracle baby, and hope to expand our family with the one frozen embryo we have. She made our dreams come true and continues to be our biggest supporter as we attempt to go through the process again. She has been more than a doctor to us. She has been a listening ear, a friend, and truly a part of our journey. We love Dr. Gustin! We could never thank her enough for who she is and what she has done for us!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?

The time spent with me [by Dr. Sephanie Gustin], and answering my questions was so minimal. My time at the clinic felt rushed and uncomfortable. I like to form a slight relationship with my providers, and I know that Dr. Gustin knew nothing about me and I knew little about her...pressed forward with the treatments without addressing the underlying cause of infertility & my overall physical and mental health. I can't tell you a whole lot about my own body, or diagnosis of PCOS, because it was communicated to me in any great detail. The focus at all appointments and meetings was to perform the procedures without explanation or consult with myself and my husband.
The nurses [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine] are extremely hit and miss. Some nurses I grew to enjoy and formed relationships with. Others made me cry more than once by being short-tempered. I arrived late to two (of many) blood draws, and the nurse was so mean to me that I finally had to confront her and ask if she had a personal issue with me, at which time she said that she was mad because I had arrived late...Strengths: -they do push clients through quickly -the clinic is clean and efficient, though outdated in comparison to Methodist -the rooms/equipment seem clean and organized Weaknesses: -the clinic staff and doctors are typically cold and lack empathy -not flexible with patients' personal and professional demands -billing department is not easy to work with (the patient has to request all additional information from them)

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I could not recognize my doctor, even after 5+ visits, including an IUI procedure. The time spent with me, and answering my questions was so minimal. My time at the clinic felt rushed and uncomfortable. I like to form a slight relationship with my providers, and I know that Dr. Gustin knew nothing about me and I knew little about her. My calls were answered by nurses fairly quickly, but if I requested to forward a question to the doctor, that posed an issue and I was not offered the opportunity to speak to a doctor. When work and personal issues affected my schedule, I was not met with flexibility, not matter what the scenario was.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
There were numerous times at which I had to correct the staff about tests that had already been run on myself and my husband. Heartland would call and deny scheduling an appointment until certain tests had been completed, only for me to have to explain that they had been already. Initially, after speaking with different staff members, I was told I could complete one more round of Clomid, but then told I couldn't without more testing, despite having sent my records from my referring doctor.

Unsuccessful
She [Dr. Maclin] did diagnose us with unexplained infertility but we only ran a couple of test. I felt like she should have dug deeper into finding out why we weren't getting pregnant. Overall her bed side manor was great but approach to treating us was not what we were wanting...first plan of treatment for us was IUI. We did two rounds of IUI. I did sonograms to make sure my egg was maturing, I took femara for 5 days before trigger shot, took a shot to make my body ovulate, we did the IUI 24 hours after the shot, then took progesterone for two weeks after the IUI. My body did not respond well to the drugs and no pregnancy resulted after both IUI`s.
I felt that they [Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine] were not looking into finding out why we were not getting pregnant but instead they were just trying to treat us...The nursing staff was nice but acted a little annoyed at times. I felt that when I was getting my IUI done that they were just doing their job. I was very nervous and feel that they did not do a very good job at telling me what they were doing...they won`t tell you anything extra unless you ask. Also, I felt that you have to be your own advocate. You have to make sure you are comfortable with the plan that they think is best for you, if your not then you need to be vocal about it or else they will just push you through what they think is best for you.
How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I really appreciated how Dr. Maclin talked us through things. She treated us very well. I really did not like her approach to treating us right away before we really looked into the problem. She did diagnose us with unexplained infertility but we only ran a couple of test. I felt like she should have dug deeper into finding out why we weren't getting pregnant. Overall her bed side manor was great but approach to treating us was not what we were wanting.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Ask questions and try to get as much testing done before you let them treat you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I felt that they were not looking into finding out why we were not getting pregnant but instead they were just trying to treat us.

I just wish they would have been more cheerful and that they would have kindly explained to me what they were doing to my body.
Describe your experience with Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Heartland was a good clinic in the fact that they did what they needed to do. They answered any questions we had. A weaknesses of heartland is that they won`t tell you anything extra unless you ask. Also, I felt that you have to be your own advocate. You have to make sure you are comfortable with the plan that they think is best for you, if your not then you need to be vocal about it or else they will just push you through what they think is best for you.

Dr. Maclin, while we didn't see her very much, got straight to the point and didn't try to waste our time or her time with additional procedures such as IUI-knowing that my husband's sperm sample wouldn't be successful with IUI. She is blunt, but gets her point across in an understanding way. She took the time to answer our questions and make sure we understood everything she was telling us. When we had our first cycle canceled due to my ovaries not responding appropriately, she took the time to call us and explain what she would like to do differently for the next cycle. She takes the time to greet you and answer questions before starting any procedures, so she has good bedside manner.
Depending on how busy the waiting room is, the front desk staff [at Heartland Center] can be either cold or warm when you check in. But after they get to know you, they get friendlier. I found all of the nurses and everyone involved in my care to be friendly and caring. Jo in billings is very friendly and helpful in letting you know the costs of the procedures. She also had suggestions for how we could finance things as well. The nurses and Jo are also helpful with finding discounts for the medication and letting you know where to apply for those discounts.
How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
As a patient of Dr. Maclin, I appreciated her bedside manner before, during and after procedures. As busy as she is, she makes you her focus during your appointment. She takes the time to thoroughly and clearly explain what or why she is doing things. She also takes the time to answer any of your questions, she wants you to understand. She cares about the financial aspects of this investment that we make also, and was very clear with us what to expect to spend so we appreciated that. During monitoring, I never saw her. And my questions were often referred to Dr. Gustin. I appreciate that Dr. Gustin and Dr. Maclin work closely together as a team, working on achieving the best success for their patients. It would have been reassuring to know this before hand rather than in the midst of treatments.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Have your questions ready, there's no such thing as a stupid question for Dr. Maclin. She will take the time to answer them and make sure you understand what is happening. Know that Dr. Maclin cares for you as a patient and wants the best success for you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
My husband and I met with Dr. Maclin for our initial consult where she explained the testing she wanted to do before starting IVF. She performed several of the procedures done before we could start IVF. She then met with us again to discuss how she wanted us to proceed-doing IVF with ICSI. The nurses then took over for the injection teaching, monitoring appointments, and followups. We saw Dr. Maclin again for the egg retrieval. Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
First cycle: Birth control pills then Gonal-F in the AM, Menopur in the PM. My cycle was canceled after the first monitoring appointment. My ovaries didn't respond appropriately. Was going to have centrotide and HCG trigger but ended up not needing them. Second cycle: Birth control pills, added in lupron, Follistim in the AM, Menopur in the PM. Continued with lupron the whole time I was stimulating. HCG trigger. I responded better and had my retrieval a day ahead of schedule. Ended up with 10 eggs-8 were mature-7 fertilized and only 2 made it to blast.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Sheryl)
I was having difficulty with reaching anyone at the clinic the first few times due to their hours and my lack of cell phone service during their hours. After meeting with my nurse, she was willing to email or text me. She was very accommodating to my needs and my questions. She was sympathetic also when my first cycle was cancelled and was cheering me on for my second cycle. She took the time to follow up with me after my transfer and congratulate me on my pregnancy even though I was out of her care at that point.

She also had suggestions for how we could finance things as well. The nurses and Jo are also helpful with finding discounts for the medication and letting you know where to apply for those discounts. The clinic's main weakness is the fact they close at 3 in the afternoon and they are closed during the noon hour. It makes it hard for patients who work during the day to get a hold of them.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I had a very long drive to get to the clinic. The nurses were very understanding of this, so I hardly ever saw any other patients in the waiting room when I was there for my monitoring appointments. I hardly had a wait and was seen right away. My results for blood tests were quick-within an hour. My nurse would text me within an hour or two of leaving the clinic the further instructions for injections.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
My insurance didn't cover anything related to infertility. So all costs were out of pocket. The pre-testing (blood work, semen testing) and procedures added up to about $8,000. Monitoring (ultrasounds) and testing (labs) while stimulating was about $1800. Medications was estimated to be $3000-$5000. IVF retrieval with ICSI (Dr, facility and lab fees included) was $8625 Embryo transfer (fresh) was $1925 Embryo freezing costs varies Embryo storage for 1 year is $500.
Describe Victoria Maclin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Maclin suggested for my age, I would be better off with one embryo transferred. She explained the risks of a multiple pregnancy and the success rates with multiple embryos transferred vs one embryo transferred. Dr. Gustin ended up doing my embryo transfer and she asked us how many we wanted to put in. We were prepared beforehand to do just one, so we only put one in and it implanted.

She [Dr. Victoria Maclin] has called me on days she was off work just to answer any questions I may have had as well...We’ve used Femara, Gonal-F, anti-ovulation drugs for IUI and after quite a few tries, we moved to IVF. We used Gonal-F and anti-ovulation injections. We have also used progesterone suppositories, estrogen pills, estrogen patches and progesterone in oil injections for FETs...has done two single embryo transfers. She’s hesitant to do more than that due to other health issues I currently deal with. I trust her judgment 100%.
I have met with probably most of the nurses at [Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine] and each and every one has been amazing. They are caring and friendly and you know they are cheering for you as much as you’re hoping for success...This clinic is very easy to get to. There’s always plenty of parking. The inside is warm and welcoming. They’re really good at calling you back when you have to leave a message and are very understanding when you have multiple questions.
How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Maclin is very kind, very honest, and very knowledgeable. I know that when she says something to me, I can trust that her evaluation is always accurate. When she had bad news to give me, she called me outside of regular office hours so she could let be know ASAP. She gave me her personal cell number in case I had any other questions for her and there as no hesitation. She has called me on days she was off work just to answer any questions I may have had as well.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Trust her. She absolutely knows what she’s doing and what she’s talking about.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Maclin has always treated me as though I was a personal friend. I’ve always known I could trust her and she has always gone above and beyond to make sure I knew exactly what was happening, when to be confident, and when to worry. I trust her 100%.
Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I am not good at remembering specific medical plans or situations. I had one IUI cycle with Femara and Gonal-F with a successful pregnancy. When we went back for #2, we haven’t been as successful. We’ve used Femara, Gonal-F, anti-ovulation drugs for IUI and after quite a few tries, we moved to IVF. We used Gonal-F and anti-ovulation injections. We have also used progesterone suppositories, estrogen pills, estrogen patches and progesterone in oil injections for FETs.

As with any fertility treatment, the costs are high. Each IUI cycle was around $500 (I think) at the time of insemination. Plus the meds and ultrasound costs. IVF was something like 7,500 the day of the retrieval and 3,900 the day of transfer. Again, plus the cost of meds and ultrasounds.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
The first time I had a miscarriage following our first IUI, Dr. Gustin called me late in the evening and comforted me while we were on the phone. As we moved onto our 2nd IUI, it was unfortunately an ectopic pregnancy. During the ultrasound when we found out, Dr. Gustin was kind and gentle in explaining what she was seeing.... Dr. Gustin has exhibited extreme kindness and has been very sensitive to our situation. I have never felt like just a number or just another patient while under her care.
I feel that overall, the Clinic [Heartland Ctr for Repro Med] is clean and well kept. The clinic and their staff is also very organized and willing to answer any questions you may have. There is one financial coordinator that can come off as less personable. I have shared this with my doctor and she notified me that there is a second financial coordinator that I can work with as I receive my care there.... All of the nurses I have worked with have been friendly and kind. I have had most of the same nurses throughout our treatment with Dr. Gustin and am pleased. T
How was your experience with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Unfortunately my husband and I have experienced 5 miscarriages and 3 under the care of Dr. Gustin. Through all of this my husband and I have had numerous questions and every time, Dr. Gustin is the one that calls me to answer my questions. She also has offered to allow me to call whenever I feel the need. Dr. Gustin has exhibited extreme kindness and has been very sensitive to our situation. I have never felt like just a number or just another patient while under her care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Gustin will take the time to answer any of your questions so don't hesitate to ask. Additionally, if you are advocating for more tests, answers, etc. she will be very supportive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
I have had 3 miscarriages while under Dr. Gustin's care. I have had 2 ectopic pregnancies as a part of these miscarriages as well. The first time I had a miscarriage following our first IUI, Dr. Gustin called me late in the evening and comforted me while we were on the phone. As we moved onto our 2nd IUI, it was unfortunately an ectopic pregnancy. During the ultrasound when we found out, Dr. Gustin was kind and gentle in explaining what she was seeing. When I sat up, she gave me a huge hug and allowed me to cry on her shoulder. She then gave my husband and I all the time we needed in the room to process what we had just been told.
Describe the protocols Stephanie Gustin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
When I went to Dr. Gustin I was taking Metformin. We tried a couple of cycles on this and we stopped following some tests. We moved forward with Clomid and eventually IUI as the medications alone were not successful. We completed 3 IUIs with Clomid, Follistim, and Pregnyl. The dosages were closely monitored and changed as needed. Additionally, due to my history of miscarriage, I was put on progesterone suppositories and this was increased following my first miscarriage with Dr. Gustin from 1x/day to 2x/day. Following my ectopic pregnancy, I also required a HSG and this was very carefully explained before and during the procedure.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
All of the nurses I have worked with have been friendly and kind. I have had most of the same nurses throughout our treatment with Dr. Gustin and am pleased. There was one miscommunications between Dr. Gustin and her nursing staff regarding types of exercise that can be continued during treatment. When Dr. Gustin was notified of what I was told, she said she would personally take the time to educated nursing on this topic and what is recommended and not recommended.

There is one financial coordinator that can come off as less personable. I have shared this with my doctor and she notified me that there is a second financial coordinator that I can work with as I receive my care there. My doctor stated that she wanted my experience there to be good. She also told me she would share my feedback with the clinic. I have since had some interaction with this financial coordinator when I called with a question and was more pleasant than had been in the past.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Stephanie Gustin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Our IUIs cost between $1900-2300 depending on medication dosages. Other tests such as the HSG was not covered once and cost around $700-800 and the second time was covered following my ectopic pregnancy. We have had a quote of IVF and depending on medications and tests, will cost between $15,000-18,000.
Describe Stephanie Gustin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
We are preparing for IVF soon and we have discussed some of these topics preliminarily and will have a more in depth conversation as this gets closer.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Maclin is incredibly warm and kind. My HSG procedure was probably the most nerve-racking (I had heard horror stories) and Dr. Maclin was so comforting and put me at ease. She grabbed my hand and said she would make sure she di everything she could to get it completed with as little discomfort as possible!... Dr. Maclin is smart, warm, compassionate, and understanding. She is everything you need when going through fertility treatment. She understands that it is a challenging time emotionally, physically, financially, and she is very supportive throughout the process.
I love the nursing staff at Heartland! They are all so kind and knowledgeable. I see the nurses far more often than Dr. Maclin. I do wish we had a nurse coordinator specific to us (a point person if you will) and/or the ability to get results online or via email, but that is a small price to pay to have such a great team!... The only downside I have found is that they don't use email or have an online portal for test results. They will call with results and instructions and you call them if you need something.

Dr. Maclin started us on a gently medicated IUI protocol using donor sperm and 5 days of 2.5mg Femara. We had one failed cycle (with two mature follicles) and are currently in the two week wait of our second cycle (with one mature follicle).

Easy to get to location with plenty of parking, very nice and clean facility, and a generally comfortable environment. All of the staff - admin, nurses, and doctors, are wonderful. The only downside I have found is that they don't use email or have an online portal for test results. They will call with results and instructions and you call them if you need something. On the one hand, it is really nice to talk to a real person (and nurses you have gotten to know), but it would be nice to be able to review results and stuff online.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
We have some insurance coverage. Costs are still being determined. Our claims were billed incorrectly several times, which has been a bit frustrating because we still don't know what our out of pocket will be for appointments from 3 months ago, but I know insurance companies can be finicky and I'm just grateful we have some coverage. Donor sperm is not covered so we pay for that out of pocket. You order it through the clinic and it is shipped directly to the clinic. They charge you 300 shipping fee regardless of what sperm bank you order from or what their shipping fee is.

Dr. Maclin never visited me to explain or administer any of the procedures...IUI treatment to artificially inseminate, combined with intercourse at home. We went through this treatment twice - one negative pregnancy test and one positive pregnancy test that ultimately resulted in the successful birth of our daughter...did not see me a single time after our initial consultation. She confirmed my PCOS diagnosis, saying that they see it all the time and that it shouldn’t be difficult to treat. She then joked that if I had a more serious issue, she could have billed me more.
I achieved the desired result relatively quickly [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine], but the billing department and front desk were not helpful, professional, or tactful (with the exception of a male that worked at the front desk - he was very polite)...While my claims were still going through insurance, the woman at the front desk gave me a hard time about having a balance on my account in front of the whole waiting room. She then made me meet with billing before I could leave my appointment, and billing confirmed that I wasn’t supposed to pay yet as insurance was processing. Conversely, the nursing staff was FANTASTIC. They were engaging, upbeat, professional and just very good at their jobs. I 100% credit them with the success of my IUI procedures
How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
See previous response. Ultimately, I got pregnant after 2 treatment at Dr. Maclin’s office. However, I credit the nurses for this. At one point, a nurse wrote a prescription for a medication she knew I would need and just had Dr. Maclin sign it. It’s like Dr. Maclin didn’t need to be involved at all except to technically order prescriptions.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Lower your expectations regarding how frequently you would expect to see Dr. Maclin. Lower your expectations regarding the friendliness and usefulness of the front desk and billing department. If you have a straightforward case like mine, the nurses will take good care of you and you will likely get the result you want. The tears of frustration I had with billing and the front desk are bygones now that I have my baby.

Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Metformin extended release every day. Progesterone to induce a period because I did not cycle on my own. Femara for a week after my period to help follicles mature (or something like that - like I said, Dr. Maclin never visited me to explain or administer any of the procedures). Frequent visits to office to monitor growth and maturity of follicles. Trigger shot / injection to induce ovulation, I believe. IUI treatment to artificially inseminate, combined with intercourse at home. We went through this treatment twice - one negative pregnancy test and one positive pregnancy test that ultimately resulted in the successful birth of our daughter.

See previous responses. I achieved the desired result relatively quickly, but the billing department and front desk were not helpful, professional, or tactful (with the exception of a male that worked at the front desk - he was very polite).

I don’t recall. I had excellent insurance.

Dr Maclin is always kind and well mannered. Don’t always get to see her and sometimes no call back from her. She doesn’t sugar coat things but is never rude. After 3 rounds of IVF and 2 IUIs we have come to know dr Maclin and some of the staff pretty well. Dr Maclin pulled some strings for us when we found out husbands count went to 0 from the last time we had tried. She worked it out with another Doctor for a discounted price on sperm aspiration so that we could afford it. Dr Maclin is a kind caring dr that makes you feel like you aren’t just a number.
The first round of IVF [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Med] we transferred they would not transfer more than two back. The second round was the same which resulted in our son. The third most recent round was a little different. They had higher success rates and a lot resulted in twins so they said they normally only transfer 1 back now. She said with my history we would transfer two but only had one to transfer back :(

If you have questions whether you think they are silly or not ask them. If you asked before and need clarification ask again. And sometimes it doesn’t hurt to ask about discounts :)

Dr Maclin was very personable and easy to talk to. She always made you feel like you mattered.

We absolutely love our ultrasound tech Cheryl! So so easy to talk to and was always willing to find out answers to our questions. All the staff are very friendly but Cheryl was by far our favorite!

Very friendly clean atmosphere. Very seldom had to wait too long to get to our appointment. We did have one mix up on an appointment but they were able to fix it quickly since we are 3 hours away from there.

What stood out the most was the cost of medications for our third round of ivf. Insurance had covered the first two rounds.

She [Dr. Maclin] is very knowledgable and direct. But she is also very busy and sometimes I felt like just a number. She knows what she is doing but I also didn't get the outcome I was hoping for.... Very knowledgable but didn't read my file at first when coming in to consult me and felt like she never remembered me until we started the ivf process. She was great through that process.... I have bad egg quality so IVF was reccomended to get lots of eggs to genetically test and implant only a good embryo.
The front desk [Heartland Ctr for Repro Med] wasn't the friendliest and dint show much compassion, didnt seem to professional. The nurses on the other hand were very professional, compassionate, and caring. They did a great job at explaining everything and answering all my questions.... I just wish I could've worked directly with one nurse and one doctor the whole time so I didn't feel like I was explaining my situation over and over again....There was a few times my prescriptions didn't get called into the pharmacy and they took longer than they had said for results to get in .
How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
She is very knowledgable and direct. But she is also very busy and sometimes I felt like just a number. She knows what she is doing but I also didn't get the outcome I was hoping for. My first experience with her was not the best as I was originally seeing her partner and then started seeing her but as time went on and I expressed my concerns she was much better.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Make sure you are your own advocate as well. Follow your instinct and fight for what you think the next step is but also do your research so you can ask questions and understand treatment.

2 triploidy losses and then I started fertility treatment. 3 IUI's with medication and trigger shot, then following with progesterone . Last IUI resulted in pregnancy but had another Triploidy loss. I have bad egg quality so IVF was reccomended to get lots of eggs to genetically test and implant only a good embryo. Just finished our first round of IVF, started with birth control then Gonal F, Menopur, Cetrotide, and Pregnyl.

Very knowledgable, direct and caring nurses to work with. I just wish I could've worked directly with one nurse and one doctor the whole time so I didn't feel like I was explaining my situation over and over again. Its comparable in price to the other clinic. I am still continuing treatment at this facility. I have considered a second opinion but I feel like both clinics in Omaha are comparable.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
We have spent $50,000 so far in fertility treatment, losses, and testing. We are still continuing our treatment in hopes for a family. Our insurance didn't cover any of it. Everything was so expensive but thats the same at most fertility clinics.
Describe Victoria Maclin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
They do not recommend doing multiple embryo transfer because it has more risk and its a safer option to do single.

It is a concern of mine that she [Dr. Victoria Maclin] did not take my age (24) and lack of fertility problems into concern when she planned my protocol. It did not feel like it was tailored to me and my situation...During the course of the stimulation period I reacted very strongly to the medication (no female infertility cause) and dosage of the medication was immediately adjusted down, with cetrotide added in early. The embryos from this cycle were much worse than to be expected for a couple our age and it was determined that this quick drop in hormones weakened the egg quality and thus harmed the chance our embryos had.
we did some extra bloodwork [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine] to check if there were any health issues that would hinder egg quality. I was waiting for these results longer than expected. When I called back in to check they had gotten the results weeks prior but everything was "normal" so no one called. While normal is a great thing to hear, it would have been nice to actually KNOW instead of sitting around waiting.
How was your experience with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Maclin was very caring and considerate of our emotions surrounding the process. At times it did feel that she was so concerned about how emotionally strained we were that she sugar-coated our situation and left larger expectations than were possible with our diagnosis.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Do not make decisions in the moment through every appointment. Take time to return home and go over all the information methodically, with the emotion detached.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Maclin worked very hard to get to know us on a personal level and understand our goals. She described our options, the cost, and what it would be like for our individual case. When requested she gave us an opinion as a doctor and what she would suggest if her own child was in our position. The meeting of these two outlooks made it much easier to weigh our options.
Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We started off the injectables with her traditional dosage of Gonal-F and Menopur. During the course of the stimulation period I reacted very strongly to the medication (no female infertility cause) and dosage of the medication was immediately adjusted down, with cetrotide added in early. The embryos from this cycle were much worse than to be expected for a couple our age and it was determined that this quick drop in hormones weakened the egg quality and thus harmed the chance our embryos had. Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing were very efficient and helped explain the procedures that would be happening but they were not well briefed on our individual case and did not know who we were.
Describe your experience with Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic is organized, appropriately staffed, and easy to communicate with. Everyone who works there creates a positive, uplifting atmosphere for everyone within the building. At times, there isn't great communication between the front desk and the financial coordinator which makes payment a little confusing.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
A round of IVF/ICSI is estimated 10,550 plus the cost of medications with additional FET at $3900 +medication costs. Freezing of embryos is $500 if put in the cryofreezer all on one day, $750 if they are put in over the course of two separate days.
Describe Victoria Maclin's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Maclin is very resistant to transferring more than one embryo and will not do it without a medical need.

Dr Maclin truly cares for each patient. When there was no heartbeat found for our baby, she sat with us much longer than expected and let us grieve. She walked us though the options of inducing the miscarriage and said over and over how she wished we didn't live so far away so we could be under her care and be monitored more closely. The office even called to check on me after.
Very friendly, gave tons of information about follicle size and lab results which was so helpful. They called to check in after our miscarriage and to monitor the process...Weakness. Financially, Heartland is very comparable to other clinics; however, they do not offer a warranty program...She [Dr. Maclin] is knowledgeable, compassionate and wants the same goal for her patients- a healthy pregnancy and baby. She adjusts treatment based on data and does not simply follow a recipe.

Trust your intuition and stay positive. Science can do wonders, but you have to believe in the process. Expect Miracles.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
When debating whether or not she recommended IUI or IVF for me, I specifically asked Dr. Maclin what she would recommend for her daughter. She answered honestly and has directed us toward IVF.
Describe the protocols Victoria Maclin used in your cycles at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For our IUI, we used gonal f injections day 3-7 and then a few days after depending on follicle size. Some cycles we used Cetrotide. To induce ovulation, we too a trigger shot for insemination to follow 36 hours later. For example, Trigger 9 PM on Thursday night, insemination at 8:30 am on Saturday.

Weakness. Financially, Heartland is very comparable to other clinics; however, they do not offer a warranty program. It's a risk, but it could be the greatest reward of your entire life, so it is absolutely worth it! Advantage- in this area, Dr. Maclin has some of the highest success rates. She is knowledgeable, compassionate and wants the same goal for her patients- a healthy pregnancy and baby. She adjusts treatment based on data and does not simply follow a recipe. Hopefully we will be one of her successful stories!

I did not see Dr Maclin much but when I did she was always kind and caring. ... I was mostly attended to by an associate Doctor and the nurses [Heartland Center]. However, when I did see Dr Maclin she was always kind and caring while being truthful as well. I believe she may have been more involved with their IVF patients and not as much with the IUI patients. ... Don’t expect to see her all that much in the early stages of being a patient.
Very professional and caring. Don’t expect to see your RE much in the first stages (past the original consult) if you are doing IUI. They [Heartland Center] did pretty well with a traveling patient like myself but did on occasion have to be called for information. They definitely seed to specialize more in clients that can do all of their monitoring on site but worked with me as best they could.

They forgot from time to time to call me with testing results - this was mostly because I was monitoring at another clinic due to distance. They also did not send my chart on when requested and I had to request a second time for it.

I only saw Dr. Maclin twice during the treatments. During the 2nd consultation and again towards the beginning. After that, my treatment was taken over by other doctors, mostly a Dr. Ramses I believe his name was. I also felt like I wasn't taken very seriously (?) and that she seemed very nonchalant over a life altering decision. Not sure what to expect since this was my first course of fertility treatments but I felt very routine in her eyes.
Can't say enough about the nurses [at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine]. Always treated me well, held my hand during the rough stuff and seemed genuinely happy for me when I became pregnant....I don't make a lot of money so I was really surprised that a course of treatment was actually attainable...still not cheap but possible.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
She seems very nice and knowledgeable. Gave me the information I needed and formulated a treatment plan that was ultimately highly successful (I got pregnant on the first try). However, if you want a hands on doctor, she may not be the one you need.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Victoria Maclin at Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine?
With Dr. Maclin, I felt like my care was more up to the nurses than her. I only met her twice, once during the 2nd consultation and one other time at the very beginning of treatment. She did not perform any of the medical aspects herself, this was either done by nursing staff (who were fabulous) or by another Doctor (Dr. Ramses, I think...who is no longer there). I don't know what I expected since this was the only time I ever sought fertility treatments but it felt a lot like going in and getting a check up instead of making the biggest decision of my life.

Dr. Maclin is blunt with expectations, but supportive as we struggle to carry a pregnancy to term. She shared her excitement when we had a high number of eggs retrieved through IVF. Her bed side manner really helped us deal with continual bad news due to poor egg quality.... We had 2 losses on our own. Performed IUI to help with 3rd pregnancy which ended in another loss. We do not struggle getting pregnant we struggle carrying to term due to poor egg quality. We tried IVF to reduce risk of an embryo implanting that does not have a high likelihood of leading to a full term pregnancy.
Their staff and facilities [Heartland Ctr for Repro Med] are great. I struggled with paying a $60 copay every visit when we were spending thousands on IVF. We never had to wait too long for our appointments. They are very accommodating if you have additional needs....Incredibly supportive and aware of our situation. Preference is to do 1 at a time to mitigate risk of multiples. But they are open to implanting more than one if requested.
