Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Nodler has been kind. He has listened to and answered all my questions. He has also provided different protocols, which I appreciate...I have done 2 eff retrievals since I have a low egg count. We are currently in the process of transferring the only embryo we have...He is very straightforward, so be prepared for that...He recommends only using one embryo at a time...We used the antagonist protocol. Since I have a low egg count, he recommended that protocol since it is more aggressive
I love CCRM. They are organized, clean, and efficient. I have never waited more than 10 minutes. Every time I have called or needed something, they have been very proactive about answering all my concerns. Even the financial department has been very easy to work with so far....Jenny [a nurse] has been very responsive, organized, and helpful. She has answered every email and question I have had.
How was your experience with James Nodler at CCRM Houston?

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Nodler at CCRM Houston?
He has been kind and answered all my questions!
Describe the protocols James Nodler used in your cycles at CCRM Houston and their degree of success.
We used the antagonist protocol. Since I have a low egg count, he recommended that protocol since it is more aggressive. We had a failed cycle with only 1 embryo that tested abnormal. If the transfer with the only embryo we had from our first cycle is unsuccessful, he suggested using another protocol, which we will try.

A little over 16k per cycle.
Describe James Nodler's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at CCRM Houston.

Dr. Hickman did explain everything well before beginning ivf. After a failed cycle he would always call me himself and answer every single question I had. I felt he was a great doctor and trusted him completely...We used the antagonist protocol and I always used lupron with every cycle. I would trigger with 10,000 units of hgh. I would always react decently...I did feel taken care of.
I think [IVF at CCRM Houston] was close to 35 thousand for two cycles. I thought the clinic was great. Your doctor isn't always the one who performs the retrieval or transfer, which I didn't know going in, sometimes its another RE on site. But all of them were wonderful...All monitoring appointments were scheduled before 8am and there were several nurses working to get you back to do bloodwork while the doctors were in and out doing ultrasounds. Things always moved very fast in the mornings.

If was vey expensive, I think it was close to 35 thousand for two cycles. Thanks to several loans, our life savings and my grandmother who helped us pay for everything. Everything was included in the price except for the anesthesia. Acupuncture was also separate.
Describe Timothy Hickman's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at CCRM Houston.
My first two transfer he allowed 3 each time, but my third only 2 were transferred per new law/rule.

I feel like she is an excellent Doctor. She hopes that this works for us and continues down the road with us. She does suggest using donor or have it as back up, but we are not there yet. I feel like she is an excellent Doctor...Do research and ask for what you want. If you think there might be some alternatives that have not been suggested, ask. She actually suggested another medication protocol for my husband and it seems to be working. His doctor had not even suggested it at the time...
Make sure to ask [Houston IVF] lots of questions. There is acupuncture on site for pre and post transfer...They set up the majority of appointments in the early morning hours so that you can get to work...She was a great nurse. She worked with me on schedules and answered all calls and emails ASAP...My benefits are excellent, but average retrieval and transfer run 12-15k plus meds...I had two egg retrievals and froze my eggs for when they could retrieve sperm. I used Lupron, follistim, menopur , birth control pills, and an oral steroid for my cycles. I think asking for an hsg is a good idea before a potential transfer to make sure nothing might be blocking things up...

Was very clear every step of the way. Very caring and reassuring. Answered all questions I had no matter how minimal it may have seemed. She [Dr. McKnight] gave me a good understanding of what was happening with my body and gave me a better understanding of what PCOS meant. Explained all ultrasounds and told me what was expected of me after my egg reached a certain size.
The clinic [Houston IVF] itself was very nice. The front desk lady knew me by name after awhile which made me feel special. I was always asked if I needed water which was also very nice. The waiting area was very warm and welcoming also. ... I remember the nurse to be very sweet and respect of my situation. Explained everything she saw on the ultrasound monitor which was super comforting

I was instructed to use clomid on cycle days 5-9 and then go in regularly for ultrasounds. Once my egg was a certain size I was instructed to have timed intercourse. Then 2 weeks later a pregnancy test. If it was positive I would go in for a pee test in the clinic to confirm.

Dr Nodler took the time to get a thorough history of my infertility journey. He made clear what results I could expect from various procedures. He spoke freely about statistics, allowing me to have a realistic understanding of my chances of success.... James Nodler is an excellent doctor. After many years of infertility, we had great success under his care. I have twins, conceived on the first round of IVF. My experience was positive; every visit and procedure went very smoothly.
Weakness: somewhat hard to reach via phone- lots of transferring or leaving messages for a call back. Strengths: blood work in house was very convenient, nice and clean facility and short wait times. Lobby staff [CCRM Houston] was always friendly.... Dr Nodler explained all our options and we all (Dr Nodler, my husband and myself) felt comfortable with an IVF cycle. Ultrasounds were done to assess my uterus, ovaries and eggs. Blood work was done to screen for other potential issues that would prevent conceiving.

We did chromosomal testing on the embryos. We elected to transfer 2 embryos, understanding that chromasomally normal embryos would have a higher chance of implementing with no issues to follow. We understood that our chances of twins would be higher.

My husband and I didn't get to see Dr. Hickman [at Houston IVF} much. In fact, we only saw him once in preparation for our IUI. The IUI wasn't even performed by him. It was performed by a nurse. I think that's normal, but someone should've informed us of this prior to the procedure. When my husband and I decided to go to a different clinic for our IVF, I requested that my records be sent to the new clinic. It took over a month to get them sent, and I had to make several phone calls.

How was your experience with Timothy Hickman at CCRM Houston?
He was very technical, and not the least bit warm. I might've been okay with this if we had seen him more frequently or if he had told us that his nurses would be doing everything.

The waiting area is lovely, the waits aren't too long, and an acupuncture clinic is also available. I did love that they didn't scoff at the idea of acupuncture as some clinics do.

I had insurance coverage for an IUI. It was only $1,500 plus the medications.

He was amazing. He is methodical and can explain why he is doing what he is doing clearly. He has no problem with questions. He is available if you need him. He called me back at night one time because i was so worried the night before my second IUI. He explained why he really thought this cycle would work (which it did).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Timothy Hickman at CCRM Houston?
Don't wait. Go see him.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Timothy Hickman at CCRM Houston?
Dr. Hickman was AMAZING!!! He took the time, anytime, including at night after he got off work, to answer my questions. He explained everything to me and seemed to even enjoy the fact I was asking questions. A different doctor I went to first actually blamed me for my infertility. He told me that my past was my past and the goal now was to get me pregnant, which he did. I can't recommend him enough.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at CCRM Houston.
My nurse went on vacation and I am a "different" patient for IUI. My issues are more like those that lead to IVF. My nurse had told me to start Crinone after the IUI (I had also done this twice previously). The day of my IUI, the nurse forgot to tell me to start the Crinone. I called to ask and they cleared it up.

She [Dr. Laurie McKenzie] was perfectly fine. I did not feel she was exceptional. I saw her only a handful of times in the entire time I was her patient. However, her treatment resulted in a successful pregnancy, so I have no complaints.... I rarely saw the doctor herself and liaised mostly with nursing staff (who were great). In their defense, I did not request any special interaction, but was surprised to hear from other patients that they had regular contact with the doctor. In retrospect, I would have requested to speak with her more and feel more like a patient, rather than just a client.
It [CCRM Housont/Houston IVF] was a very professional, well-managed clinic. I would advise new patients to leverage the mental health services provided through the clinic. The weakness was the price. For the price I expected more individualized attention.... e received a "hardship" rate. If I remember correctly, the total, including medications was around $17,000.

As a patient with unexplained infertility, we tried cycles of clomid, followed by IUI. After unsuccessful IUI attempts, we tried IVF with a fresh, 5 day transfer. We were successful!

Honest and forthright. He [Dr. Timothy Hickman] answered all questions and explained the process almost to the point of over explaining (but I had done a lot of research prior to our first appointment). He called with results of the egg retrieval personally. Found out later that he has a tendency to always propose multiple embryo transfer if more than one viable embryo is available
[Houston IVF/CCRM Houston is] Organized and knowledgeable. Wonderful experience. There are multiple doctors and you will end up seeing all of them at one point in time or another so if continually seeing the same doctor is important to you that might be a weakness but I had no issue with it.... My appointments started on time and I was seen quickly. My nurse called me promptly with lab results and instructions when applicable.

All in, egg retrieval and 1 transfer was about $17k

He tends to propose multiple embryo transfer. As I had never had a failed IVF cycle and knowing current success rates I might have chosen to only transfer one at a time.

Dr. Nodler took the time to explain the process and go over our test results in detail so we knew what what was going on and what to expect for the future....Always be open, honest and ask as many questions as you can. He is very professional and personable and takes the time to answer all of your questions....We are still currently in the process of treatments as we recently had a failed IUI and are now starting our IVF treatment. So far, everything has gone smoothly and we have been well-informed on the process of IUI/IVF.
Only weakness I could see is that it's really hard to get a hold of a person [at Houston IVF], you have to always leave a message. They do respond back typically within a few hours so the wait time isn't too long...My insurance covered three rounds of IUI and one round of IVF. Currently do not know the final cost of IVF...Dr. Nodler took the time to explain the process and go over our test results in detail so we knew what what was going on and what to expect for the future.

Dr McKenzie [at Houston IVF] was very caring and compassionate. She seemed like she strived for success with every patient and wanted to give everyone the best possible outcome....Don't be afraid to ask questions. You will see her every visit, but it will be short...Appointments were quick, but organized and stress free. Everything was "first come, for serve" for morning monitoring appointments....Erin was great at communicating wth me. I found it easiest to send her an email with any questions. She'd always respond within a couple of hours. She would also return phone calls, but due to both our work schedules, we'd often miss each other.

If you are ready to give up, she [Dr. McKenzie] is worth seeing for a second (or third) opinion...She let us know what she thought had gone wrong in the past and what she would do differently to help us become parents. She called us personally when our twins were born prematurely.
I appreciated having a go to nurse [at Houston IVF]. The nurse was reasonably accessible and prompt with results...I was very impressed that Dr. McKenzie, or one of the other two doctors in the practice, took care of all ultrasounds. In the past, I had only been given ultrasounds by a technician.

If you are ready to give up, she is worth seeing for a second (or third) opinion. She is very understanding and her lab has the best results in town. As she told me, the majority of the credit in IVF success goes to the lab.

Dr. McKenzie is a kind and caring person and her bedside manner reflects those qualities.

He [Dr. Timothy Hickman] performed lots of tests and did ultimately treat one issue of mine (small tumor pressing on my pituitary gland) but apparently misdiagnosed the quality of my husband's sperm and told us we wouldn't get pregnant without IVF. In the end, I felt pressured to pay for IVF [at Houston IVF/CCRM Houston] but when getting a second opinion about my husband's sperm, we found out there was nothing wrong with it and we ended up getting pregnant on our own even though the doctor said we never would.... If you are in a super hurry to get pregnant and want to pay for IVF, then he might be okay. But if you are patient and just want to see if you can treat a possible small issue before getting pregnant on your own, then find another doctor.

Describe the protocols Timothy Hickman used in your cycles at CCRM Houston and their degree of success.
We did a lot of tests and he found 2 problems. He treated me with bromocriptine to shrink my pituitary because I had a small tumor on it. Then he diagnosed my husband with "bad sperm" and then told us we couldn't get pregnant because of this and wanted to schedule IVF. We got a second opinion about the sperm which ended up being completely normal and ended up getting pregnant without the IVF.

I guess the only issue I have with the clinic is the misdiagnosis of my husband's sperm which could've led to us spending a whole lot of money for nothing. So, I don't trust this doctor or the clinic.

She was caring and compassionate and had a great bedside manner, but we only saw her 3 times in the 7 months we were there doing testing and treatment and it was when treatments were failing to help us.... She really was wonderful to interact with. Very personable and real! We wish she would have been more directly involved in our month by month care because we really liked interacting with her. She was always very compassionate when we scheduled re group visits after another type of treatment failed
Although the staff [at Houston IVF] was usually polite, they rarely (except for some of the nurses) even shared their names and the explanations for procedures were sometimes cold and without feeling. We also were not informed on one of our IUI’s that my uterine lining wasn’t only a 5 until after that procedure. Had we known it was so thin, we would have opted to change meds and wait until the next month to try. We felt that IUI cycle was wasted and when we shared that with the staff, they basically shrugged their shoulders and didn’t try to help or explain. They said they didn’t think the lining was that important.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Katherine McKnight at CCRM Houston?
Maybe be more open about interactions with staff? We should have been more honorary about how our interactions weren’t always so great with them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Katherine McKnight at CCRM Houston?

They said they didn’t think the lining was that important. When we got a second opinion at CCRM in Colorado, they disagreed and said they would never have attempted with such a thin lining because of how unlikely implantation would have been. The treatment plan felt a little cookie cutter and we always felt like when we asked questions to the staff, we were annoying them.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
So far I have been very happy with Dr. Nodler. He is honest but gentle for the most part in his approach. He seems very knowledgeable and came very recommended. I did a lot of research for going to him, and many of his patients were very happy with him as a doctor. Dr. Nodler didn't seem like he is in a rush, he took all of our questions every time we met with him in his office. He has also done one procedure and was very gentle and caring.
The office [CCRM Houston/Houston IVF] has peaceful music playing when you walk in. The front office person always greets you. They help put your mind at ease. Everyone there is nice and helpful. I like that the office doesn't feel busy and overbooked. There are usually just a few couples in the lobby.... You usually have to leave a detailed message, and she gets back with you the same day or the next morning. She is very knowledgeable.
