This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
[Dr. John Couvaras] took the time to listen and drew out a timeline of the events that have happened all the way back to my first period. He looked outside the box and looked at the testing I had...We learned more from him in 10 minutes than we did the whole process with our first Dr. He was kind, and really listened...He really specialized in more complex cases and knows how to rule things out instead of wasting time and money.
The [IVF Phoenix] clinic is really great, I would think that they would have verified my benefits on my insurance in advance, so that at the visit we could have the whole picture. I think for me having one person assigned would of been better. They have a number you can text, but I don’t like that it’s not the same person. While at the clinic everyone was super nice, and I did not feel pressured into anything and I really appreciated that
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
I love that in the clinic I was able to see how much Dr C cared. We learned more from him in 10 minutes than we did the whole process with our first Dr. He was kind, and really listened. I am so excited to work with him, and so glad another ivf sister recommends him to me. He really specialized in more complex cases and knows how to rule things out instead of wasting time and money. The only thing I wish was different is when he called with the results things went a little to fast.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Have your medical history organized to save some time. I would also bring copy of them with you if your coming from out of state like me. I would also say to have your questions written down, because I feel like you get involved in conversation , and on the spot can’t remember them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Dr. C took the time to listen and drew out a timeline of the events that have happened all the way back to my first period. He looked outside the box and looked at the testing I had. He wanted to make sure it is just PCOS and a clothing disorder before proceeding.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
I have not started treatment yet. Dr. C wants to rule out human growth hormone deficiency before starting any treatment. Once I am able to see an endocrinologist in my area hopefully in the next month, then we will be able to review again with Dr. C. and move on to next step.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
The nursing staff need to be. Little more on top of knowing what the Dr has ordered and could explain a little better on the process for out of state patients. I think they should give you copies of all lab orders with the correct codes on them. The codes on paperwork were not accurate to what the lab had in computer.
The other thing I would suggest would be the follow up was not always followed through as requested. There is definitely is some improvement that could happen. Also making sure all staff is saying the same thing.

Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
My consult was $250 or $300 can’t remember we exact amount. Then we paid another $80 for some testing to be done. Those tests in the clinic then had more charges to process it was about $600 dollars for genetic testing and sperm analysis.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
Dr C said it was better to only do 1 embryo. He said he does leave it up to the couple to decided 1 or 2 embryos. He suggests only 1 good embryo at a time so they are not having to fight each other with what I have, and also so you don’t use them all up. It gives him more time on future cycles in case something goes wrong he can adjust things, and you still have more eggs.
What specific things went wrong at IVF Phoenix?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Failed to order appropriate test

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Phoenix.
I think they did a great job while in clinic. The B/C pills were not called in, so it made me think I was to wait until my next cycle when I was suppose to start them right away. Some questions I had were not really relayed correctly. I think with me living out of state complicated things, so I hold nothing against them for this. I think if there seeing people out of the state it would be good to have a travel coordinator to help with hotels in area and transportation. I think just making sure to go over everything clearly, and making sure all the orders and prescriptions are correct. One of our labs had work address instead of home. This caused a delay in doing the test which was time sensitive and had prep.
Dr. C.[Couvaras] first focused on getting my hormones and levels balanced. ... Dr. C. is the best at what he does, trying to figure out the underlying problem. He doesn't just pump you full of hormones and assume you'll get pregnant. He first looks at you and your history to understand what it going on. ... Dr. C. is very "to the point", which in some cases is nice.
The clinic [IVF Phoenix] is always clean well cared for. There is always water and granola bars for you which is a nice touch. They have TVs in the waiting room and plenty of magazines. Having 2 locations has saved us 100s of miles! ... The billing and financial side of the clinic is a little frustrating. The last thing any women in there wants is to have to worry about paying her bill or wondering if insurance will cover anything (let's be serious, it won't).
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Dr. C. is the best at what he does, trying to figure out the underlying problem. He doesn't just pump you full of hormones and assume you'll get pregnant. He first looks at you and your history to understand what it going on. We have gone through 2 iui cycles with Dr. C. Haven't had any luck yet but he still seems hopeful. We are taking some time off to save up for IVF, our last option before surrogacy.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Be as mentally prepared as you can be. There wont be much emotional or mental support. Have a strong support system outside of the medical field. Follow exactly what doc says, with diet, exercise and supplements. It all adds up.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Dr. C. is very "to the point", which in some cases is nice. My husband and I dont want to waste anymore time trying to get pregnant, so his straight forward approach and demeanor is appreciated. There are also the days when I am overly emotional and just want a little emotional support as well, and that is a little more hard to find, from any doctor I think.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Dr. C. first focused on getting my hormones and levels balanced. This was simply taking his suggested supplements and doing frequent blood tests. That was the east part. We then moved into an iui cycle with clomid, menopur and heprin. This cycle resulted in what appeared to be a fertilized embryo but failed to implant. We then tried another iui cycle but with more menopur. This cycle had no results. Our next step will be ivf with pgs.
Describe your experience with your nurse at IVF Phoenix. (Assigned nurse: Mary)
The staff was great at explaining what the next steps were in our plan. They were always great about explaining and demonstrating how to use a new drug or injection. They were always helpful about planning appointments and working around our schedule. The billing and financial side of the clinic is a little frustrating. The last thing any women in there wants is to have to worry about paying her bill or wondering if insurance will cover anything (let's be serious, it won't). I wish there was a way to separate the financial part of all this. When I go in to get a procedure done, I am stressed enough.

Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
The cost for the actual iui procedure were about $350, which is nothing compared to all the labs, medications, and shots. Office visits were around $100 which also was not bad as we only saw the doctor for the actual procedure and a consultation after the iuis failed.
We weren’t sure what to expect but Dr Couvaras is a genius in my book, he is so knowledgeable. He was so willing to do an extra ultra sound even when it wasnt planned to see how close I was to ovulation.... We are still in progress. The acyclovir I am still taking and the plaquenil was short term. Dr Couvaras focuses a lot on inflammation especially with me.... He instructed me to read and learn about SIGHI diet, also to take Vitamin D, Gaba, B6 and Methyl Folate.
They [IVF Phoenix] are great at scheduling and you always leave with your visit notes in your hand that have your plan. At the end of the visit the nurse sits down and goes back over the plan with you ( so you hear it twice before you leave the office ). They all totally get everyone is at a different point in the journey.... I adore that his sweet wife works with him, and the rest of the staff is sweet but sometimes a little unorganized.

We weren’t sure what to expect but Dr Couvaras is a genius in my book, he is so knowledgeable. He was so willing to do an extra ultra sound even when it wasnt planned to see how close I was to ovulation. I love that he, himself does the ultrasound with us, in the past at other offices we’ve had poor experiences with ultrasound technicians. I love that his sweet wife works in the office with him. I have been beyond blown away by his care these last 3 months.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Dont be afraid to ask questions! Sometimes he will explain using medical terms I don’t recognize even with my medical experience. He is so willing to explain, just ask!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
The office and Dr Couvaras is so great at communicating threw calling, texting, their portal and just in general when your at the office. your always able to schedule an appt quickly. After doing an HSG in their office the nurse was so kind and of course Dr Couvaras is always so great and making sense of what is going on and explaining it.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
We are still in progress. The acyclovir I am still taking and the plaquenil was short term. Dr Couvaras focuses a lot on inflammation especially with me. He instructed me to read and learn about SIGHI diet, also to take Vitamin D, Gaba, B6 and Methyl Folate. i hadn’t had a period in 18 months trying so many other things (metformin, clomid and holistic medicine) and this worked within 20 days!!!!! It blew us away. Now we’ve had two cycles. We have planned for this next cycle to do haprin shots/clomid and IUI. Dr Couvaras immediately recommended that we do the genetic carrier tests, which I was grateful for. I just want to do things right, we feel we’ve had too many doctors try to shortcut out of seeing me. Dr Couvaras gets that and is willing to go at our pace to get that baby into our arms.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
First I adore that his sweet wife works with him, and the rest of the staff is sweet but sometimes a little unorganized. The Dr does quite a bit himself it seams but it feels like he almost prefers it, it feels like he is taking care of you.

At the end of the visit the nurse sits down and goes back over the plan with you ( so you hear it twice before you leave the office ). They all totally get everyone is at a different point in the journey. Some people come in after 6 months of ttc and some people wait years or like us we waited 4 years and tried several other treatment plans before going to Dr Couvaras.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Mostly Co pays we haven’t gotten the visits back from both insurances. The genetic testing was cash and the supplements was cash. It has not been as bad as I expected. IUI will be about $400 with the lipids another few hundred then with mediations and another month of supplements. I bet it will be about $1,500 by the end of March.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
i haven’t had an experience with this yet. Maybe it won’t be necessary but maybe it will.
Dr. Couvaras was always kind and courteous. We also answered our questions and we never felt rushed when we were in the office. He always made sure to ask us if we had any other questions before we left....I had a low white blood cell count and Dr. Couvaras put me on a cleanse of vitamins, medications and Heparin shots to increase my count. I was on it for a month and my number went up drastically after the cleanse. All of my other tests came back normal but unfortunately, my husband suffers from male factor infertility and we were told that IVF is our only option.
IVF Phoenix is full of kind, caring and helpful people. They do their best to accommodate all of your needs and answer all of your questions. I felt extremely comfortable every time I went to an appointment. I think it's encouraging to know that Dr. Couvaras and his team are dedicated to getting to the root of the cause of why you aren't getting pregnant. I would recommend any of my friends and family to see him when they are trying to conceive.... The HSG test I had done was around $300. My husband's semen analysis tests were each around $180.

My co-pay for each visit was $60 through my insurance. The HSG test I had done was around $300. My husband's semen analysis tests were each around $180. All of the expenses added up which is why we haven't started IVF yet since we simply can't afford it. We're trying, by the grace of God, to start a family naturally while we save money to afford IVF.

I love how Dr. Couvaras gets to the root of the cause. The only complaint I would ever have, if any, is that I wish he could do more to help my husband's male factor.
I’ve felt he [Dr. Couvaras] has looked at me as an individual, not as a standard group that most drs look at.... I love that he has gone above and beyond to dig deeper than any other dr I have seen, to find out the reason my body won’t sustain a pregnancy. He has me on my own individual protocol that is specifically for my body based on blood work... So far he has had me on many different vitamins and supplements to treat viruses and inflammation in my body. My blood work has improved quite a bit in just a few short mo the but he is still researching to figure out how to get it to it’s best before pregnancy!

I had a wonderful experience [with Dr. Couvaras]. I am highly impressed with his bedside manner in his skill would highly recommend him and so grateful for what he does! Wish I would have seen him sooner...My OB referred me to Dr C and I'm forever grateful because I went in today and had a pleasant almost complete cramp free HSG. If you've had this done before you know that's a dream come true. He was fantastic! His skill, equipment and calm nature helped me get through the test with great results. I dreaded this day for years and it was no big deal at all. I highly recommend him, his office and encourage you with the right team good things can happen!

I can't even begin to express my gratitude for Dr C! I was referred to him by my OB after I had a horrific experience at Simon Med getting an HSG 4 years ago. The test helped me conceive my son so I knew it would be worth it as we were trying for baby number two with no success after the last year and half but dreaded having to have it done again. Dr. Couvaras took the time to acknowledge how difficult this journey has been for me to date, then started with my medical history from the beginning to get a complete picture of all of the events leading up to our first appointment. He was direct while also showing compassion...takes the time to really dive into the etiology of your infertility. I have some medical knowledge, but he did not gloss over the details or make me feel rushed when I asked questions. He listened to my concerns/suggestions and always provided the rationale behind his decision making.
Although most information is uploaded into the patient portal [at IVF Phoenix], I found that many verbal instructions were not otherwise put in print (or if they were, they were not readily accessible to me). This resulted in multiple phone calls to clarify (rare, but could be time consuming). There were also a couple of occasions that medications were supposed to be called in to my pharmacy and were not; however this was quickly fixed with a phone call.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Bring a notepad! Also, a lot of the staff seem to be somewhat fluid in their roles in the clinic—try not to get frustrated, someone could always find an answer to my question (even if it was a different person than I expected).

Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Prior to IVF, he used an FSH suppression protocol for a minimum of 120 days, consisting of vaginal estrace and DHEA; doses were adjusted based on weekly labs. The rationale was to (hopefully) recruit a cohort of follicles to improve my antral follicle count. For the IVF cycle he planned for an antagonist protocol; however, my cycle was canceled 2 days into stimulation medications due to procedure restrictions with Covid-19.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
The nursing staff seems a bit disjointed at times as they staff 2 different locations; however, with time there have been less clarifications needed and I have learned which nurses to ask for to get my questions answered in a (more) timely manner. On a positive note-they are friendly, compassionate, and apologize for misunderstandings or miscommunication when it does occur.
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
The clinic is clean and well designed with plenty of good distractions (magazines, a TV, bottled water, mints, etc). They occasionally run behind but the majority of the time there was little wait. The financials can be a bit murky at times due to the multiple inclusions/exclusions with the IVF packages, but nothing that can’t be clarified by reading through it carefully and asking questions. Another small detail: Dr. Couvaras did the majority of my follicle scans and he is great about talking you through it; however, the nurses who performed them were not as verbal and often did not want to give definitive information (but perhaps that is what they are instructed to do).
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Without insurance, cost was approx. 10K for an egg retrieval (including cycle ultrasounds, assisted hatching, ICSI, embryo biopsy) and FET. Medications an additional 5-7K. Third-party genetic testing of embryos was not included.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
I believe he strongly suggests eSET, but I have not made it to egg retrieval at this time.

Very blunt, often very scientific and confusing. From the very beginning, he [Dr. Couvaras] was really pushing me towards IVF and not wanting to try any other course or option. I was put on over 26 pills a day and twice daily blood thinner injections, for over 6 months, before I insisted on doing something!...Especially after my IUI, and once it was determined that I would miscarry, there was no follow up. I was told to go home, and miscarry. No one checked in on me. No pain medication was prescribed. There was zero human interaction, or even an "I'm sorry for your loss".
Lack of communication around testing and results. Since going to a new doctor, I was informed that they [IVF Phoenix] didn't even complete a blood panel for recurrent pregnancy loss. Also-zero follow up when I was told to go home and miscarry...Very busy, they put you on a very intense protocol of supplements/medications. Very much focused on IVF versus any other treatments. Very blunt-scientific, sometimes tough to understand the jargon used and little explanation. Zero compassion or follow up upon miscarriage

Dr Couvaras is a very outside of the box thinker which is not necessarily bad but he is not great at breaking down the theories behind his protocols and why he wants you to take medications he prescribes. I was taking a cholesterol medication and Reglan and had no idea why he wanted me to take them for IVF. ... I was on growth hormone, Gonal-F, menopur, provera, ganirelix, lupron, heparin, and hcg for my egg retrieval stim cycle. Prior to that my prep protocol was vitamin D3, vitamin B6, GABA, antiviral 1-3 times daily, plaquinel, heparin twice a day, and multi vitamin, folinic acid, l-arginine, decreased carbs, increased protein.
This office [IVF Phoenix] was never honest with us about their pricing. They gave me "cash" prices and then billed my insurance three times as much. an egg retrieval should have cost us around $8,000 and it ended up costing over $15,000. It's been five months since my egg retrieval we are still dealing with incorrect filing of claims because we were billed for procedures that were not performed. Total nightmare dealing with this office and their staff.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Review your billing with a fine tooth comb and make sure you have the quoted pricing agreed upon and signed before paying anything to them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
This office was never honest with us about their pricing.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
There are so many patients at the office per day that the staff just treated you like a number.
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
our experience with IVF Phoenix was so bad, I don't have and kind things to say about them. I wish I did, but I don't and that is why we are so happy to be with our new physician. Their billing person is so hard to communicate with and get straight answers from, you are not assigned to a specific coordinator, ultrasounds are performed by a different person everytime.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Never given a cost estimate. cash price for egg retrieval cycle was $6750. My insurance paid out at 100% and they attempted to bill my insurance over $30,000 just for an egg retrieval, as an insurance patient. This completely wiped out my $15,000 lifetime max infertility benefit. They are completely unethical and will charge insurance patients way more than cash patients so they can collect as much money as they can ans sometime more money than a person paying cash.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
If you have PGS testing done and the embryo is normal he will transfer 1 or 2, he gives you a choice. if the embryos are not PGS tested he prefers to transfer 2

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Phoenix.
I felt rushed the entire time I was with this clinic. I was never given a cost estimate prior to treatment so I never had the chance to shop so to speak, I was never given an option of using a different pharmacy or paying cash for some of my meds and not all of my meds. The Dr was pushing that we complete an egg retrieval before I turn 35 and kept telling me "because success rates dramatically decrease at that point" we really need to get eggs out now", it was not a good experience at all in my opinion
He [Dr. John Couvaras] absolutely refused to do any testing on my husband, and just continued to medicate me. When we switched doctors we found out that my husband not only had extremely low morphology, but also has a balanced chromosomal translocation. As you can imagine, this was extremely frustrating and heartbreaking for us, and we felt that we had been completely misguided and mistreated, and it was an issue that could have been handled very differently.
Overall, we just felt like the environment was chaotic and unorganized [at IVF Phoenix] We had several instances of receiving "wrong" information, prescriptions, and even the wrong patient paperwork from one nurse or staff member, and then when we questioned it, they changed the protocol or instructions. But if we wouldn't have caught it, I don't know if they would have. To avoid sounding repetitive, I would just say that the communication was disappointing, and we never really felt like we had a team or a doctor that was invested in helping us.
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
I felt like Dr. Couvaras is an extremely intelligent person. However, that created a false sense of hope in the beginning because he talked so confidently, but the follow-up in treatments did not mirror that confidence. There was an overall lack of empathy and consideration for patient questions and emotions. I felt like he gave us the same speech every time, and he wasn't willing to answer questions. After years of trying to conceive, doing several rounds of medicated cycles, and having experienced several early miscarriages, I knew there was more going on than what he was willing to explore. He absolutely refused to do any testing on my husband, and just continued to medicate me.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Do not allow him to make you feel like your questions are invalid. You as the patient, and as a woman, know your body. If you feel like you're not being heard, and like what he is telling you is not working, do not be afraid to get a second opinion. Nobody can advocate for your journey better than you can!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
The office was often chaotic and interactions with him felt like a rehearsed speech. After several months of treatments and talking with other patients, I realized that we were all being given the exact same protocol regardless of medical history, diagnosis, weight, age, etc. I felt like I wasn't heard and my questions were brushed off.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
When we first met with him, he told us that his "typical" protocol was a "cocktail" of antivirals, anti-inflammatories, and the stimming medications. He prescribed Losartan, Heparin, Plaquenil (which is an anti-malarial drug), Femara, FSH, Acyclovir (antiviral), Lovastatin. We did home OPKs and came in for occasional ultrasounds to monitor follicles before doing hCG trigger and timed intercourse.
He then tried a protocol with FSH medication: I was instructed to do home ovulation tests, and to begin protocol which came on a sheet that looked like this: Omnitrope am (30), Heparin am/pm (32), Prednisone am (10), and FSH pm (150iu). Come in for U/S and bloodwork.
Instructions were vague at best, there were rarely nurses to answer questions, which left us feeling very confused and on our own to connect the dots. I was given a different nurse every time I called or went in for appointments, so there wasn't much continuity of care. One thing I was also very concerned about was the high doses of Heparin he prescribed to his patients. For several months of my treatments with him, I was giving myself Heparin injections 3 times a day. When I switched doctors, they ran all of the clotting factor labs and told me that there was no reason for me to have ever been on Heparin in the first place.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
Every time we came in for an appointment, we saw someone different. The communication within the office as well as over the phone or email was inconsistent, and I felt like I was constantly starting over and having to catch people up to where we were in our treatment. During one appointment, I went in for an ultrasound and then we were going to receive updated protocol. Not only did the ultrasound tech admit that she didn't know what she was looking for, but after the fact, she said she didn't know what doses of medication I was supposed to be on moving forward. Dr. Couvaras was "busy" and couldn't see us. She said she would give us what she thought was the right protocol sheet, and then we should call later and figure it out. Given the time sensitive nature of fertility drugs, I said I was willing to wait until someone could make sure we were taking the right medications. When another nurse finally came in, she gave us a completely different protocol sheet and told us the one the other nurse had given us was incorrect. Imagine if I would have gone home and not questioned, I don't think they would have corrected the problem.
Another instance was when they started diagnosing and prescribing medications, and I felt something was off, when I questioned it, they then realized they had the wrong chart!
That was very typical of how we felt about the communication, and was ultimately the reason we stopped pursuing treatment there.
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
Infertility is very complex, sensitive, and stressful as it is, but having a clinic where we felt lost, unheard, and unimportant just added to the stress. The lack of communication and organization was a huge red flag for us. I could tell Dr. Couvaras is smart, but his protocols for every patient that walked in the door were the same, and he wasn't willing to listen to our concerns. I think he works with a very particular demographic of patients, and I know he has helped patients in the past. However, I feel like in the world of fertility and growing your family it is important to have a doctor who is willing to be a guide and work WITH you to understand the full picture rather than treating you like every other patient.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
In total we spent around $8,000 during our 9 months with Dr. Couvaras. That doesn't include all of the outsourced labs or prescriptions. We are really fortunate to have pretty good insurance that covered partial costs of office visits and prescriptions, however, most of what we did treatment wise through him wasn't fully covered.

Overall, we just felt like the environment was chaotic and unorganized. We had several instances of receiving "wrong" information, prescriptions, and even the wrong patient paperwork from one nurse or staff member, and then when we questioned it, they changed the protocol or instructions. But if we wouldn't have caught it, I don't know if they would have. To avoid sounding repetitive, I would just say that the communication was disappointing, and we never really felt like we had a team or a doctor that was invested in helping us. The biggest thing was that after years of trying, medicated cycles, and early miscarriages, Dr. Couvaras still refused to test my husband. I've spoken with several people who have had similar experiences. One blood test with our next doctor confirmed that he had a balanced chromosomal translocation, and that our chances of ever conceiving/carrying to term/healthy pregnancy on our own were very slim. We are now in the process of IVF with PGS/PGD and additional protocols, and we feel that we could have been spared years of unnecessary heartache, stress, and financial strain if those tests would have been run when we asked for them.
[Dr.John Couvaras] has a lot of years of experience under his belt, but I felt it also made him rush through things and not fully explain things...PCOS and we had a morphology issue on my partner's side...never explained why he increased my dose after the retrieval...would not describe him as warm or friendly
[IVF Phoenix] communication system is great...convenient to communicate by text message. I really liked the phlebotomist and one of the nurses. Pretty much every one else was clinical and not compassionate...did not appreciate them pushing me to sign it when I didn't feel comfortable with it
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Couvaras has a lot of years of experience under his belt, but I felt it also made him rush through things and not fully explain things- like because he knew it like the back of his hand he spoke as if others did too. He spoke very quickly like he was in a rush to hurry up and finish the call or conversation so he could get to other things. He was not mean or aggressive, but I would not describe him as warm or friendly. I mostly felt like ,my infertility was just a puzzle to be figured out or a problem to be solved, not a human to be cared for and guided through the process.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Write down all your questions and be thorough or you won't know what you're doing or why he is asking you to do it. He will not volunteer explanations. My honest advice would be to go somewhere else for treatment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
He talked fast like he was trying to get through everything as quickly as possible instead making sure we understand everything and the why behind it. He did not elaborate on things or explain the why unless we specifically asked about each point. When I miscarried he never called to give condolences. I never heard from him again after the transfer and subsequent miscarriage. He recommended IVF right from the start, and in hindsight I feel like this was extreme and we could have had success with less invasive and intense treatment options.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
I wish I could explain the rationale for the treatments used but he either did not explain the why or I never understood it well enough to remember it.
I have PCOS and we had a morphology issue on my partner's side. He basically said because we both had issues we had a 2% chance of conceiving so we should do IVF. He also recommended a surgery for me (laparoscopic ovarian diathermy) prior to IVF. We did the surgery, waited 2-3 months for my body to heal and calm down, then did an egg retrieval. He was aggressive with the Lovenox (blood thinners) surrounding my retrieval. He increased my dose post-retrieval to the point where I had blood running down my belly. He never explained why he increased my dose after the retrieval. My levels were deemed appropriate in the pre-retrieval time frame of using the blood thinners.
Describe your experience with your nurse at IVF Phoenix. (Assigned nurse: Taylor)
Taylor seemed to be the head nurse at the time of my treatments. At the start of our retrieval cycle I made a mistake with the dose i injected. I was nervous and freaked out and she was kind over text with the situation.
That being said, every single time I had a vaginal ultrasound with her, she was very rough and always rammed the wand into my cervix.
When she did my ultrasound that revealed I had miscarried, I got upset and she never once offered compassion. She saw I was upset and then said "I'll give you a minute" and left the room and never came back in.
Mary (another nurse) was kind in all my interactions with her. A girl at the front desk was also kind.
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
Their communication system is great. It's very convenient to communicate by text message.
I really liked the phlebotomist and one of the nurses. Pretty much every one else was clinical and not compassionate.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Including medications, we spent about $20,000 to get through a surgery he recommended and one retrieval and one transfer cycle. That is not including over the counter supplements he recommended.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
Couvaras recommended us not doing a multiple embryo transfer but we chose to anyway for a variety of personal reasons. He seemed to typically recommend sET over multiple.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Phoenix.
After a blood test I was sent a consent form for starting a steroid. I didn't feel comfortable with it for a number of reasons and wanted to talk to the doctor about it before making a decision. The clinic told me he was out of town but I could have a consult when he got back. Then 3 hours later someone else called me back and said I needed to hurry up and sign the consent form. I told them I wanted to talk to the doctor and they said he wouldn't be back in time and then again pressured me to sign the consent form. I told them I wasn't okay with it and finally we worked out for me to have a discussion with the other doctor at the clinic. I did not appreciate them pushing me to sign it when I didn't feel comfortable with it, and the conflicting information that it wasn't a time sensitive issue and then that it needed be to taken care of ASAP.
After I received the news that I had miscarried I told the staff I wanted someone to send me instructions for what I was supposed to do next. By over 24 hrs later no one had given me any instructions so I had to call back and request it again. All I got was a text message that said, "You can stop all medications. We're here when you're ready to move forward." Maybe I was in a sensitive place, but that felt like "quit your meds and let us know when you want to give us more money."
I traveled out of state to be treated by Dr. Couvaras and took a considerable amount of time off of work to be able to be in Phoenix for the treatments. It was worth every sacrifice. I was closely monitored throughout the cycle and every level of detail was given proper attention. I am currently 34 weeks pregnant preparing for the arrival of our miracle baby girl. She would not have been a possibility if it weren't for Dr. Couvaras. He completely changed my life and has given me the greatest gift I could ever imagine. I will forever be thankful. My only regrets are that I didn't start my IVF journey with him from the very beginning.
The [IVF Phoenix] clinic's strengths are their ability to provide personalized care to each patient and give enough time to properly explain treatment plans and help with medication administration. I do not believe there to be any weaknesses...The nursing staff is attentive and quick to respond. I enjoyed the relationships I developed with the nurses and always looked forward to seeing them at appointments...Dr. Couvaras is very detailed in treating each patient as an individual, with specific attention to their needs. I felt that Dr. Couvaras took considerable time in developing a treatment plan, performing necessary diagnostics and executing the treatment plan that was unique to me.
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
I came to Dr. Couvaras with an extensive history of loss and frustration in not finding specific answers. I started my IVF journey due to male factor infertility and had experienced 3 losses with IVF transfer cycles. My former doctor could never provide a concrete answer for the losses with good evidence. I read about Dr. Couvaras in the book "Is Your Body Baby Friendly" and decided to have a consultation. From the beginning, I could immediately see that Dr. Couvaras gives a high level of attention to detail, which I felt my case desperately needed. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
My piece of advice is to trust the process and give Dr. Couvaras the time to perform the necessary diagnostics. The infertility journey can seem so long, but it is worth the time to properly test and diagnose before jumping into a treatment cycle.

Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Dr. Couvaras used a modified natural transfer cycle to transfer a single embryo. We also used immunologic strategies that included prednisone, IVIL and testing for TNF-alpha.

Dr Hakman was compassionate, trustworthy and kind towards our goal of creating a family...For our first and only transfer we did a frozen transfer with our Day 5 4AB embryo. Dr Hakman put me on PIO injections and progesterone suppositories due to the higher pregnancy and live birth rates this combo has, research has shown that. I continued them for 10 weeks after i found out that our transfer worked....
All my nurses [at IVF Phoenix] were very attentive and always communicate very well during my appointments and after when they would review my blood work results with me...Everyone at this clinic is compassionate, attentive, trustworthy and they are ready to help you start your family. They will listen to you and put together the best protocol...
How was your experience with Sasha Hakman at IVF Phoenix?
Dr Hakman is the reason why we are expecting our precious baby girl in December. We tried to conceive for 3 years and visited 2 other IVF clinics before we came across Dr Hakman. From our very first consultation Dr Hakman was compassionate, trustworthy and kind towards our goal of creating a family. She explained in detail what the IVF process would entail and how she would do everything she could to get us to a successful pregnancy and healthy baby. Every appointment or visit with Dr Hakman no longer felt like we were talking to a doctor, but now a friend who understand us and the rollercoaster that is IVF and infertility. Dr Hakman is the reason why our first transfer worked and we are about to welcome our daughter in a few months. We are forever grateful to her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sasha Hakman at IVF Phoenix?
I would recommend Dr Hakman to anyone that I know if you are struggling to conceive and are looking for a doctor that will listen to you and understand you and what infertility is then please go see Dr Hakman, your life will forever be changed, as did ours.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Sasha Hakman at IVF Phoenix?
Dr. Hakman was very professional while always being very understanding of our situation and having tried to conceive for 3 years. She listened to both me and my husband on what our thoughts were moving forward and what treatments we wanted to follow.

When we underwent our first IVF cycle we paid out of pocket for the entire treatment cost and PGS testing of our embryos.
Describe Sasha Hakman's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
I have always been against transferring kore than one embryo so that is not something me and my husband wanted to do. IVF in itself is already hard and multi gestational pregnancies are high risk, I did not want to take that chance and Dr Hakman agreed with us.
Dr. Couvaras was very responsive and made sure that I was fully aware of what my treatment needed to be. He would also explain potential causes and affects which I thought were helpful. He went into great detail. I also feel like he did an overall well being check instead of just focusing in on the what he thought might be the issue...He was very against the multiple embryo transfer. He prefers the single embryo transfer due to risks
Strengths - make things very personal, does a very comprehensive check, tailors the treatment to you. Weaknesses - some treatments had to be done in mesa which is very far from the scottsdale location...[the IVF Phoenix nurses] always made sure to answer any questions I had. If I called, they would explain anything I asked or made sure to put me in contact with the right person.

Make sure you ask questions. If you are unsure about something, just call and talk to someone at the clinic, they are very helpful.

Dr. Couvaras and his team really make sure that every prescription and treatment is tailored for your body's need. They also made sure you felt welcome and understood what to expect from the treatment. They were very reassuring throughout the whole process.

He monitored me every 3 days. I would go into the office and get my blood drawn and an ultrasound done every 3 days. They reviewed the bloodwork and ultrasound results that day and provide feedback for med updates for that night. I was on menopur, ganirelix, gonal-f.

It was very efficient and well run.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
There was a cost for every appointment I had with the doctor, costs associated to all the tests run (semen sample twice, HSG, blood draws, ultrasounds), IVF medication costs, procedure costs, PGT testing costs.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
He was very against the multiple embryo transfer. He prefers the single embryo transfer due to risks. If you do want to do the multiple embryo transfer, you just have to sign a bunch of additional waivers. They do allow it, but he explained how high risk it is and the side affects.
What specific things went wrong at IVF Phoenix?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Phoenix.
They drew blood and submitted my test for the wrong review. They submitted it for Day 3 instead of the other review that needed to be tested.
I appreciate how Dr C [Dr. Couvaras] educated me along the way and made sure I was informed about all procedures as well as the benefits and risks...he encouraged me to be an active participant in my care, and made sure I understood why we were doing each treatment/ intervention and how it all worked and fit together. When I didn’t understand something he explained it in different ways until I understood. I also loved that we tried some natural methods to work on things first (before starting my egg retrieval)...
I really like that it’s a smaller feeling clinic [IVF Phoenix]...I love how the staff and Dr C compliment each other. Dr C is quicker and more to the point (but doesn’t make me feel rushed by any means just more matter of fact) and the staff add the extra fluff to balance things out. They are kind and really make me feel like family...the financial department was always available and talked things through with me...

When I didn’t understand something he explained it in different ways until I understood. I also loved that we tried some natural methods to work on things first (before starting my egg retrieval) such as increasing my protein intake and making lifestyle changes. Sometimes he talks fast but answers any and all questions and I like how he really cares what happens and he always remembers what I have outlined as my priorities/ needs. I also really really appreciate him helping me make the process as affordable as possible and giving me options on what was necessary and what was extra as well as being compassionate and respectful of my financial means. He is also really funny when you get to know him! His subtle jokes always crack me up and make me laugh especially when I got nervous during my retrieval.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! He is a genius and all the knowledge can be a little intimidating but he is very very kind and does a great job of explaining things in different ways to make sure you understand. Also listen to his advice for lifestyle changes! I was on a plethora of vitamins and we focused on my protein intake and working out at specific times each day. It felt like I had found the “missing ingredient” to getting in shape and feeling healthy and I have never felt better! Follow everything to a t it really works!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
I love how my coordinator and Rhoda stopped their whole day to make sure I was taken care of and ok when we found out our first transfer resulted in a chemical pregnancy. They sat and talked with me for hours and double checked all tests! During my egg retrieval I got sick with strep throat and Dr Couvaras called me within minutes of texting the after hours phone. I love how everyone knows me by name and they make me feel like family. I really like that it’s a smaller feeling clinic.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
We used estrogen shots to thicken my lining as well as vaginal estrogen. We also used embryo glue to help the embryo stick/ implant as well as progesterone injections. My first transfer ended in a chemical pregnancy and so for my next transfer we targeted what did not work the first time and made adjustments. Our embryo implanted and grew a little, but not enough so growth is our focus this round. We added growth hormone and PRP instead of IVIL to target my bodies specific needs. During my retrieval we also used growth hormone as I was very protein deficient.
Describe your experience with your nurse at IVF Phoenix. (Assigned nurse: Taylor)
I love Taylor! She took the time to get to know me and is incredibly kind and caring. I ask a lot of questions and she always answered each one and never made me feel like a burden for asking questions. In fact she encouraged it! I also appreciate how she was always full of hope but was honest when things didn’t go as planned. I really appreciated this because I know delivering bad news can be hard. She is also so funny!!! She also never makes me feel rushed and I love chatting with her. Larissa the front desk is also one of my favorites. She is so so nice, always answers any and all questions and just gets things done! She’s quick and really really good at her job. She also took the time to get to know me which I really appreciate and always makes me feel welcome

Dr C is quicker and more to the point (but doesn’t make me feel rushed by any means just more matter of fact) and the staff add the extra fluff to balance things out. They are kind and really make me feel like family. Rhoda is also the nicest person ever. I think of her as my fertility cheerleader and stand in mom (my mom lives out of state and I have never lived this far away from her or been through something so intense without having her close by). She will stop what she is doing and sit with you when you are having a hard time and she truly cares about your happiness and success. The financial part can be overwhelming (let’s be real IVF is expensive) but the financial department was always available and talked things through with me. I also appreciate how it wasn’t awkward when I questioned why something cost a certain amount or when I corrected something on our cost sheet.
I would say to order your meds on time/ when they say but I did have a good amount of extra meds after transfer so in hindsight I would have double checked if I should have filled all refills at the beginning or waited. For me I didn’t want to have to worry about running out mid cycle but it did cost a bit extra by not being more thoughtful/ frugal when it came to meds.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Egg retrieval, IVF with ICSI, genetic testing, six months of storage and one transfer (with IVIL, sono oil, and embryo glue) was about 14/15k. Medications (not included) we’re about 5/6k. To be honest the money part got overwhelming as this is the most expensive thing I have ever done (the clinic was very helpful, I don’t think spending this amount of money could be not overwhelming unless you have significant financial means. My feelings of being overwhelmed were in no way due to the clinic) so I preferred to just pay up front and not think about it so I could focus on the process. These numbers are what I remember to the best of my ability.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
We used one embryo as there are risks with a multiple baby pregnancy and a chance that both embryos could split and end up with four babies. We decided to use one embryo as research showed using two embryos did not increase success rates. We also have 5 embryos and I didn’t want to limit the number of transfers we had available/ risk having to do another retrieval as I knew I could not afford another retrieval right now. Also my partner and I decided we are more comfortable with one embryo at a time. The risks that come with having multiples made me nervous and this is my first baby so my partner and I thought it would be best to start with one baby but of course would love if we got surprise twins.
Dr. Couvaras is a mad scientist in the fertility world...knows the ins and outs and continues to stay on top of the most recent findings and research of infertility...never felt like I was getting just the "protocol" treatment...he was treating my particular case...reassuring statement he said once was "I don't want just to get you pregnant but my goal is to help you have a healthy pregnancy all the way to term."
the nurses at IVF Phoenix are not the warmest. I was rarely greeted when I came in...several occasions a nurse never knew my medical history or looked at my charts...clinic itself is clean, professional, and up to date with all the advances of technology...able to do most of your blood test done in office...billing department is knowledgeable and works hard to support and get the claims taken care of.
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Dr. Couvaras is a mad scientist in the fertility world. He knows the ins and outs and continues to stay on top of the most recent findings and research of infertility. I never felt like I was getting just the "protocol" treatment. But rather he was treating my particular case. Being a mad scientist also comes with him at times give a lot of information that is hard to understand fully. But he never showed annoyance when I would ask for it to be explained further. He truly enjoys what he does and that makes him the best.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Don't be afraid to ask questions or for him to repeat himself.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Dr. Couvaras took time to evaluate my personal history. I never felt that he was just using the textbook treatment. Instead he saw me as my own unique case. He allowed for me to ask questions and he would further explain. The reassuring statement he said once was "I don't want just to get you pregnant but my goal is to help you have a healthy pregnancy all the way to term." At times when they were busy in the office, it did feel like a business. Come in, not much interaction with staff. Get your ultrasound done and be on your way. But this was few times only
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Through out the IVF cycle birth control is used to help control the cycles. Heparin for my particular need. Acyclovir 3x a day before transfer. Intralipid infusion and prednisone during transfer
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
From my experience at other clinics, the nurses at IVF Phoenix are not the warmest. I was rarely greeted when I came in or when I was pulled back. Nurse communication with one another was lacking. One nurse would say one thing and the other would tell me the opposite. Several occasions a nurse never knew my medical history or looked at my charts. Another nurse did not communicate timely and days would go by without any update or call back. Of the office, Courtney is an amazing nurse at IVF Phoenix. She had compassion and always was on top of all my charts, schedules and would go above an beyond to support me.
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
The clinic itself is clean, professional, and up to date with all the advances of technology. They have all new ultrasound machines. They are able to do most of your blood test done in office. Their billing department is knowledgeable and works hard to support and get the claims taken care of. The clinic maintains the privacy of the patients with the room set ups.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at IVF Phoenix.
Most monitoring appointments had to be done before 9:30am. But they were always able to work around what was most convient for my schedule.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Most claims were billable to insurance, 10k for the needed medications, ERA biopsy $350, Embryo Glue $300, Sono Oil $225, Intralipid $375
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
Based on my age and history I was only allowed to transfer one embryo.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at IVF Phoenix.
After a polyp removal Dr. C informed we I would have my transfer the next month. When the nurse called she attempted to schedule me 2 months out for the transfer. I had to tell her to look in my chart for the doctors notes on getting me started for transfer with in the month. Nurse failed to look at my chart.
Several occasions I had to call for an update on my results. Was informed they would call me by the end of the day. Then never did call until the following week.
[Dr. Couvaras] recommended doing more IUI’s without investigating the cause of my miscarriages adequately. Endometriosis should have been investigated given my history but it wasn’t, even after I requested it...when it comes to treating the whole patient I think he is missing key approaches towards solving an individuals causes of infertility...
[IVF Phoenix] was clean and well organized. The staff were polite and helpful. I would like to see them offer more alternative methods to treat infertility...Didn’t call in a prescription to my pharmacy and I had to go back three times to try to pick it up. They also didn’t give me copies of results and failed to call when my results came in...Telephone consultations were absolutely ridiculously priced! $170 for a 25 minute conversation!
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
I believe Dr. Couvaras is good at what he does in a specific area of infertility (hashimotos). However, when it comes to treating the whole patient I think he is missing key approaches towards solving an individuals causes of infertility. He’s very clinical, which isn’t bad but it doesn’t produce a good bedside manner. I personally like that he’s straightforward when delivering facts but it can become disconcerting. I would like to see him offer more options for people with unexplained infertility to find out the causes and be more proactive.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Be prepared to have questions and know what you are looking to achieve. If you are wanting an in depth investigation into your causes of infertility, you won’t find it here. However, if you want a doctor that is blunt and factual without embellishments of any kind then Dr. Couvaras is definitely it. He can talk very clinically and some people may not know what he is referring to, so ask clarifying questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
For the most part, I felt I was treated well by the clinic’s staff. There was decent communication regarding information. I felt more like a number from Dr. Couvaras. He’s very blunt which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but I didn’t get much response or insight about my personal situation. After almost a year, I still never received treatment! He recommended doing more IUI’s without investigating the cause of my miscarriages adequately. Endometriosis should have been investigated given my history but it wasn’t, even after I requested it.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
I never received treatment even after a year of being a patient. In fact, he suggested I try IUI without any medication which I felt was unnecessary and unjustified, not to mention pointless. IUI does not give you increased chances if sperm is able to reach the egg, which wasn’t our issue. I felt there wasn’t sufficient evidence to recommend IUI or IVF if he could solve our recurrent pregnancy failures.

The staff seemed well organized and were prompt in their communication
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
The clinic was clean and well organized. The staff were polite and helpful. I would like to see them offer more alternative methods to treat infertility. They could offer information on the little known facts about infertility to help patients do their own research and become more informed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
I’m not sure of the cost as we never received treatment. Telephone consultations were absolutely ridiculously priced! $170 for a 25 minute conversation!

He [Dr. Couvaras] is very thorough. The first appointment we had, he laid out a table sized piece of paper and walked through our entire history with trying to conceive and our losses. He asked detailed questions to both me and my partner and by the end of the appointment he felt he had a concrete plan to move forward...Dr. C has a strong opinion on only transferring one embryo at a time...the entire process was individualized for me, it wasn’t a cookie cutter experience....
I always felt welcome [at IVF Phoenix]... organized, easy to communicate with, friendly. Because it is a singular doctor and his wife running the practice the whole office works as a team to coordinate your care. However, because it is a smaller practice, there are only two E valley locations...The entire staff from the front desk to the nurse who draws labs, to the MA who goes over the paperwork are all super sweet and the clinic seems like they know who you are and don’t treat you like a number.

He is very thorough. The first appointment we had, he laid out a table sized piece of paper and walked through our entire history with trying to conceive and our losses. He asked detailed questions to both me and my partner and by the end of the appointment he felt he had a concrete plan to move forward. He explained things in ways that were easy to understand. He makes you feel comfortable, allows time to get your questions answered. At my transfer appointment he was patient and took his time even though my bladder wasn’t as full as it needed to be. He brought me a snack and water and just make the entire appointment easier.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Be patient. It’s easy to have a specific timeline in mind when it comes to your expectation of when you’ll be pregnant, but this Doctor covers your entire health to make sure your body is ready to get pregnant and stay pregnant.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Everyone at the clinic knew me by name, the entire process was individualized for me, it wasn’t a cookie cutter experience.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Because of my recurrent losses, Dr. C really prioritized getting my inflammation markers down, and I was placed on blood thinners for half of my pregnancy. Before the transfer I was on a couple of different pills to help with the inflammation markers and then I was placed on heparin during the pregnancy. Both blood levels were checked often to make sure I was within proper ranges.

I don’t remember specific numbers, but I do remember comparing costs with friends who had done IVF as well and the cost was middle ground.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
Dr. C has a strong opinion on only transferring one embryo at a time. He used the statistics to explain the percentage of conception using one, and multiple embryos at a time.
The doctor [Dr. John Couvaras] made me wait over 40 minutes every single time that I saw him...My case was not as severe as others and he still put me on the highest medication and diagnosed me incorrectly...Dr Couvaras' bedside manners can really affect and impact your whole infertility experience. It is extremely hard already to be in this process and his lack of compassion and communication skills is something to reconsider. I wish I had. He will not change his bedside manners, some people defend his manners because is supposed to be a "lab genius".
Not a smile on any face, always running behind the schedule, not a friendly atmosphere [at IVF Phoenix]. The clinic seems clean and organized. It is just the staff and of course, the head of the clinic that is just a disgrace...I felt like a number because I had to repeat my clinic history every time I spoke to a different nurse...

Dr Couvaras' bedside manners can really affect and impact your whole infertility experience. It is extremely hard already to be in this process and his lack of compassion and communication skills is something to reconsider. I wish I had. He will not change his bedside manners, some people defend his manners because is supposed to be a "lab genius". That's a joke. He's no better than any other doctor in the valley. Believe me, when you are in the middle of treatment, not only with fears but with lack of energy and positivism and 4 times the hormones your body is used to, you will need someone to rely on. You will need someone to explain things more than one time and you will need someone that will not judge you. he's lack of compassion and patience will make you doubt about yourself. He seems to be "friendly" the first consultation but when you start learning more about your process, you'll have questions and that's something he didn't like. Please be aware that you need to feel 100% comfortable with your doctor. I didn't follow my gut, I was 60% comfortable with him and I did pay the cost for not following my gut. I regret seeing him, and having my care in his hands every single day. Please please talk to girls in the region, do not believe his rate in Yelp, Facebook or any other social media. Talk to real girls, you'll find that my story is not different to others.

I felt like a number because I had to repeat my clinic history every time I spoke to a different nurse. The doctor made me wait over 40 minutes every single time that I saw him. Waiting time was also for the times that I saw a nurse. My case was not as severe as others and he still put me on the highest medication and diagnosed me incorrectly.
Describe your experience with your nurse at IVF Phoenix. (Assigned nurse: Jackie and Courtney)
Courtney was organized but her poor attitude was really regrettable. I never saw a smile on her face.
Jackie has terrible communication skills. More than 3 times she failed to provide me with relevant information.
Rhoda, she's all friends and smiles but wait until you don't agree with her on something.

He [Dr. John Couvaras] takes the time to break things down for you, explain the what/why/how’s and the next steps. He doesn’t jump right into things as fertility treatments aren’t a one size fits all. We did months of testing and waiting...We feel confident going into IVF with him!...likes to think outside the box...He may be a bit abrasive but he wants you to know he is taking the time to tailor a plan for you...We are currently in the process of doing IVF. Gonal, menopur, omnitrope, Lupron. We are waiting for my next cycle to start then it is go time...
[The nurse at IVF Phoenix] explains things thoroughly and reassures us that she will help guide us along this journey...Strengths - the doctors knowledge is amazing. Our IVF coordinator is on top of everything. Weaknesses - the staff could be a little more friendly. I feel a big disconnect when there during an office visit. It would be nice to build a relationship with the team as a whole...I had to call and inquire on it a few times but they owned up to it and made things right. A prescription wasn’t called in which could have been bad if I had expected those meds right away but thankfully I had time to figure out that mishap.
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
We finally found a doctor that wanted to take the time to figure out answers and not just push another procedure. We met with him and knew right away he was the doctor for us and our search was over. He may be a bit abrasive but he wants you to know he is taking the time to tailor a plan for you and to TRUST him. We are doing just that. I believe that’s how it should be - you shouldn’t have to keep second guessing yourself or wondering if there are things being missed because they don’t take the time to properly diagnose you. Couvaras likes to think outside the box.

We are currently in the process of doing IVF. Gonal, menopur, omnitrope, Lupron. We are waiting for my next cycle to start then it is go time. However I know from a few friends that have or are currently seeing Couvaras, if a cycle fails he changes protocol or dives deeper into finding out why it could have failed.

11k for IVF excluding medications (includes ICSI) $180 each SA for husband. Copays fun about $40 after insurance.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
He explained why it’s best to transfer 1. If the cycle fails - you want to figure out what needs adjusting, therefore you don’t want to waste two good embryo’s. Plus success rates don’t go up the more you transfer. We are confident in his choice to do one at a time.

Simple mistakes where the ball was dropped with giving us results which was frustrating. I had to call and inquire on it a few times but they owned up to it and made things right. A prescription wasn’t called in which could have been bad if I had expected those meds right away but thankfully I had time to figure out that mishap.
Dr. Couvaras takes an approach that looks at much more than just hormones and follicle counts. I appreciate that he was always looking for other underlying aspects that could be impacting our fertility problems. Unfortunately, he was never able to find anything that definitively explained our problems, so I left feeling like we spent a lot of money on adjunctive treatments to address potential problems (like intralipids to prevent rejection of the embryo and sonohysterograms using oil infusion to treat the uterine cavity for potential viruses like HHV6) that may or may not have been anything that was really a problem - but cost us about an extra $800 per cycle, which quickly adds up. It was also clear that even as interested as he was in potentially looking for other causes, he forgot or at least didn't document well in the chart some of our unique history that definitely impacted our fertility status.
I think the main weakness is his clinical staff's disorganization [at IVF Pheonix]. And ultimately, just because the doctor's protocols didn't work for me, doesn't mean he doesn't do great work for other patients. I would just suggest that potential patients stay on top of the clinical staff and make sure they clearly understand timelines and that the staff is understanding any questions being asked.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
Expect that treatment with Dr. Couvaras will take a time commitment, as he often requires months of treatment with supplements or medications before moving on to the next step of treatment. From the experience of others I personally know who have seen him, as well as the data from his SART and CDC stats, he seems to do well with people who haven't had success elsewhere and with people who can do IUIs. I am in neither of those categories and feel that I perhaps wasted time here, and wonder if I could have had better outcomes with a different doctor/approach.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
It felt clear that Dr. Couvaras really cares about his patients, and I had good interactions with him during my appointments. He was thorough and took the time to answer my questions. In addition, his wife, Rhoda, the office manager is very kind and I felt that she personally cared about me, which was so kind and wonderful. His staff was a mixed bag. The first set of ultrasound techs that were working for him when I started care at his office were wonderful. After returning from a break from treatment, the previous techs were gone and there were new ultrasound techs. I did not have as good of an experience with these staff members. Information wasn't always provided to me in a timely manner, they forgot to call in some prescriptions until the last minute, and it was obvious there was miscommunication between them and the doctor.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
I was put on some medications and supplements ahead of time with the goal of increasing my TNF-alpha to normal levels (I've been low, which he felt signaled __). Then proceeded with an antagonist IVF cycle, with ICSI for the fertilization post retrieval - we have mild MFI, but at the time he was including ICSI in package pricing and I believe was doing it for most patients. We did a freeze all cycle at his suggestion, as he felt a FET allows for more optimal uterine environment. We made several blasts which were frozen. We elected not to PGS test at the time due to my age being relatively young. Subsequent FETs involved the use of heparin during lining building, intralipids infused several days before embryo transfer, sonohysterograms with oil infusion before FETs for later FETs, and prednisone starting at time of transfer or a couple of days before transfer.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
They were very good at their main job, doing the ultrasounds. He does not use dedicated nurses, he uses the ultrasound technicians to coordinate patient care. I felt that they were not good with addressing questions I had about my care (they minimized or brushed off my questions). Getting FET or pre-FET medication schedules was at times delayed. It seemed that whenever my body didn't cooperate exactly according to plan, it threw off their routine and communication suffered about when I needed to have blood drawn/ultrasounds done. At the first FET that I was prescribed prednisone for, I was informed that I should have started taking the prednisone a couple of days before the FET - I was told this after the embryo transfer. No one had called in a prescription for me, nor had anyone previously told me that it would be part of my plan that cycle, nor was it written anywhere on my FET calendar for that cycle. It was a lot of little things like this that felt incredibly frustrating. I felt like I constantly had to be double checking everything I had previously been told, with what I was currently being told, and making sure that I was being given correct information. The two technicians I dealt with during my last year at the clinic were not overtly rude to me, but were never very friendly.
Describe your experience with IVF Phoenix.
I really liked that someone answered the phone every time I called. I always felt that they knew who I was when I was calling. And I appreciated that the doctor was thinking outside of the box. I think the main weakness is his clinical staff's disorganization. And ultimately, just because the doctor's protocols didn't work for me, doesn't mean he doesn't do great work for other patients. Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
I believe the IVF cycle was around $7k including ICSI and anesthesia. IVF medications were around $3k. Recommended supplements and non-stimm medications were around another $50+ per month of treatment. FET cycles were around $2k for ultrasound monitoring and the transfer. I paid my copay of $20 for each blood draw during IVF stimulation and FET cycles, those costs were not included in the price of the package. Intralipids were around $375 per infusion. Sonohysterogram with oil was $400 per procedure (one before each FET cycle).
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
He was willing to transfer 2 or 1 embryos per FET, depending on our preference.

Already discussed, see above answers regarding medications not being called in to pharmacy or me being told they should be started. Once I was also not called with beta results and had to track them down on the lab's website and then call the after hours line to know what I should do regarding continuing or stopping medications.
He [Dr. Couvaras] thinks outside of the box and tries things I only read about online but never saw put into practice before. I think they are really the next steps to being successful....I have been on prednisone, vitamin D, antiviral 3x day, DHEA 2x day, Fish oil 2x day, Vitamins B6 and B12, Lovenox 40mg and 60 mg 12 hours apart, intralipids before IUI and after positive test, PRP wash before IUI, and we used Clomid and injectable Menopur for the stimulation of eggs.
The staff [at IVF Phoenix] could be more friendly/compassionate but they do a pretty good job keeping things updated and letting you know your plan. I have a type A personality though so I always follow up anyway...All clinics have issues sometimes and I had a few here. One appointment was made but when I came in, they didn't have me down and the Doctor was really mad about it and showed his frustration in front of me which was really awkward. That was the worst visit I've had. A few times lab orders aren't called in so I now just call the day before to verify before I go to the lab.
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
This doctor was the first one to get me pregnant with treatment ever and although I miscarried I am confident his techniques will get us a full term pregnancy. He thinks outside of the box and tries things I only read about online but never saw put into practice before. I think they are really the next steps to being successful.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
He's brilliant and thinks outside of the box but don't expect a warm fuzzy feeling every time you see him. He's not there to hold your hand or make you feel good so if you are looking for that then I would go somewhere else. If you are looking for someone that will do alternative methods and test for everything, this is your guy.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
The staff and doctor really don't show much of a personality or smile. They are straight to the point and very business like. The bedside manner isn't the greatest and I used to care a lot about that (of course would still like a good bedside manner) but it's not the most important thing to me anymore. I really just want results and this team is a results driven team.

I think they are a great clinic. Rhoda is the sweetest and is there when you need her. The Doctor is brilliant and the staff is pretty good at getting you in and out and keeping things updated. I think you have to know they aren't the most compassionate bedside type people and that although they are great, you can't forget to be your own advocate too, that's with any clinic.
Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
Insured covered testing, lab, and some visits. The IUI I believe was $375, the Intralipids around $3-400, and PRP was about $400.
Describe John Couvaras's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at IVF Phoenix.
I haven't done a transfer with Dr. Couvarus but with the other doctor he suggested 1 embryo, and 2 embryos for the next two transfers.

Dr. Couvaras has a very personalized approach and listened to me very closely each appointment. I feel like he is a brilliant doctor who helped me understand more than just my fertility but my overall health. We did a ton of testing before we jumped to any conclusions and treatments....I was told to follow a low histamine diet to clean up inflammation I had. We did a intralipid infusion a few days before my procedure since I had high killer cells. With each recommendation in his treatment he had a very good explanation of how it would beneficial.
Strengths [of IVF Phoenix]: Excellent care and communication. Tons of package pricing options. Very responsive to questions via phone and text. Clear instructions. Weaknesses: two separate offices that you have to drive to... There are a ton of package pricing that are very competitive with other clinics out in Arizona....They were a few ladies who would explain the treatment plans and next steps and were always willing to assist with questions any day/time.
How was your experience with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
I had seen two fertility doctors prior to dr. Couvaras and didn’t feel comfortable with them at all. Dr. Couvaras team is so responsive to my many questions and are just a text or phone call away. He listens carefully and transcribes each appt in front of you. As he examines you he educates you on what he is looking at. Dr. C even personalized my diet/exercise routine.

Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
Dr. Couvaras is a very smart man and wants to prevent miscarriage or any problems before any treatment is done. I was told to follow a low histamine diet to clean up inflammation I had. We did a intralipid infusion a few days before my procedure since I had high killer cells. With each recommendation in his treatment he had a very good explanation of how it would beneficial.

After seeing another fertility dr that treated everyone as a one size fits all, Dr. Couvaras was a breath of fresh air. He had testing done on me that I had never even heard of and put me on a diet and supplements along with medication. I really felt as though he was fixing the problem from the inside out, instead of attempting to get an unhealthy person pregnant.... First round I did acyclovir to reduce virus that I carry, heparin for blood clotting and tons of vitamins including high doses of vitamin D.
It’s a busy clinic [IVF Phoenix] but over all runs very smooth. I’ve hardly ever had to wait to be seen for blood work, IVs, ultrasound etc. it is very clean and welcoming. I think a weakness would also be how busy it is, sometimes it’s a tad over overwhelming how many people are going in a out while you are waiting for info.... Sometimes when Dr is out of town I feel like they can’t get it together. They text me the wrong info on occasion or asking me questions that don’t

He had testing done on me that I had never even heard of and put me on a diet and supplements along with medication. I really felt as though he was fixing the problem from the inside out, instead of attempting to get an unhealthy person pregnant. I had just had my third miscarriage when I went to see him and I needed to feel like my body was being fixed to carry a baby.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
He’s a little crazy, but there is a method to his madness d he gets results. I’ve had friends who were told they would need IVF with others drs end up being able to conceive naturally after doing Couvaras course.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix?
This lastbcucle I haven’t even seen him, I’ve only had encounters with the nurses and sometimes when the nurses text me they have the wrong information about what I’m suppose to be doing in this cycle.
Describe the protocols John Couvaras used in your cycles at IVF Phoenix and their degree of success.
First round I did acyclovir to reduce virus that I carry, heparin for blood clotting and tons of vitamins including high doses of vitamin D. That cycle we also did a trigger shot. Unfortunately that round wasn’t successful. This round (in two week wait) we did the same as above and added chlomid on days 3 to 7 of my cycle. Did that followed by a trigger shot with timed intercourse again. During this cycle we had a semen analysis done on my husband, had the first one done with first fertility dr and his results came back normal, Couvaras does different in house testing and my husbands did come back low this time. We opted to try naturally one more time and if unsuccessful this round we will try IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at IVF Phoenix.
One nurse is very friendly and sweet and the other not so much. Sometimes when Dr is out of town I feel like they can’t get it together. They text me the wrong info on occasion or asking me questions that don’t pertain to my treatment at that time. For instance I did a trigger shot last Sunday and then on Thursday one nurse text me to ask what my OPKs were looking like. It was irrelevant after the shot and kind of freaked me out that maybe they had me do something wrong.

Describe the costs associated with your care under John Couvaras at IVF Phoenix.
So far I believe we are at about 5000$. Mostly just for testing, HSG, sono with oil, and the intralipid IVs. If we move to IUI next cycle the cost will increase significantly.
