Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr Lydic is direct and professional but not entirely impersonal. He demonstrated solid understanding of our needs as a queer couple and the options that are available to us. I felt like he was happy to have me as a patient and that he was easy to communicate with in general...suggested proceeding with unmedicated IUI cycles and if after three we weren’t successful...his responses were individualized
this clinic [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] is very accessible. I was denied treatment because of my bmi at previous providers, but KU Med actually bothered to get to know me beyond the numbers on my chart and made me feel like I deserved to get pregnant as much as anyone else. The wait time for a consult was a little lengthy...interactions have been through the patient portal, but they are quick to respond and helpful with questions

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
It helps to have done a little of your own homework beforehand. The more you know about what route you’re wanting to take or what questions you want to ask, the more you’ll get out of the appointment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Lydic did not make assumptions about my health or lifestyle based on the numbers in my chart. I felt like his responses were individualized. He gave my wife and I plenty of time to ask questions in our consultation and it didn’t feel like we were being hurried through the appointment.
Describe the protocols Michael Lydic used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Since as far as we know, we are only in need of donor sperm and we want to avoid multiple pregnancies, Dr. Lydic suggested proceeding with unmedicated IUI cycles and if after three we weren’t successful, then we would try medication. I do have a congenital blood clotting condition that is a concern for me and he recommended starting a regimen of baby aspirin. We also discussed my current prescriptions and he gave me insight on which ones to continue taking during treatment.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.

So far, I’ve only been billed for the consult and the lab work and those were manageable. My interactions with their finance liaison have been helpful.

Dr Lydic was actually great as far as treatment and getting us a a successful IUI. We did rarely see him in person only my first appointment and I had a appointment scheduled for IVF...He did communicate after every IUI on the portal . I do wish the communication with him was more...My partner loved him because he said he gave him hope and still let us try the IUI with the low sperm count . He just increased my meds to make sure I produced a lot eggs.
I had different [Kansas U Center] nurses each time I did have to complain once for being in the waiting room to long for an IUI and feeling being of rushed on my second IUI however the issue was corrected IMMEDIATELY...A lot of times we did have to ask about the next steps and what was going on being that we’ve never done it before...Weaknesses is the communication is all thur a portal you barely talk to somebody direct unless you go in for your ultrasounds and IUI/IVF. They don’t hound you on payments .
How was your experience with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Lydic was actually great as far as treatment and getting us a a successful IUI. We did rarely see him in person only my first appointment and I had a appointment scheduled for IVF ( if my last IUI cycle was a bust) however I never needed the IVF. He did communicate after every IUI on the portal . I do wish the communication with him was more. He has a demeanor where you can’t read him lol but he was absolutely great with giving us options and not just telling us no way like a previous doctor did at this same clinic. My partner loved him because he said he gave him hope and still let us try the IUI with the low sperm count . He just increased my meds to make sure I produced a lot eggs.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Just be patient . It gets tiresome and upsetting when you want something so bad and it’s not happening. Now I look back those 4 cycles I did was only 4 months but it felt like a year. I didn’t feel like a paying patient with Dr.lydic but I felt like a person who just wanted children he definitely understand his job and does it really well to get the best outcome
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Well the nurses that we saw majority of the time were always so upbeat and positive. It gave me great hope it would happen regardless of the past negative cycles.
Describe the protocols Michael Lydic used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
So each cycle Once ovulation days were near I had a ultrasound to determine the quality of the eggs then I was put on a 4 day Letrozole pill (which he increased dosage amount each cycle ) to produce more eggs . Then another ultrasound for a mature eggs a couple of days then an ovidrel shot which produced ovulation given at home the night of the ultrasound within 48 hours of the shot being taken we had to go in for the IUI
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Sara Hagen)
So before I had Sara I had different nurses each time I did have to complain once for being in the waiting room to long for an IUI and feeling being of rushed on my second IUI however the issue was corrected IMMEDIATELY. Since then it was no issues
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
You don’t get to see the doctor a lot you deal with more of the nurses. Some nurses are there for a check and some are pretty good at they do and can tell they love what they do . A lot of times we did have to ask about the next steps and what was going on being that we’ve never done it before . But after the first cycle you pretty much get it . Weaknesses is the communication is all thur a portal you barely talk to somebody direct unless you go in for your ultrasounds and IUI/IVF. They don’t hound you on payments .

About 1600 out of pocket after insurance which my insurance covered fertility once I hit my deductible so most of the cost was hitting my deductible

She [Dr. Kristin Holoch] based my protocol off of her previous experience. She has gone into detail of all my cycles and has tweaked my next protocol based on my previous results...Her bedside manner is awesome. She gets to the point but is also very patient. She hasn’t pushed us to do IVF just yet and I respect her understanding that IVF is very expensive.
The nursing staff [of KUC for Advanced Reproductive Medicine]were amazing through each of our IUI’s! They were kind, compassionate, and did 99% of the work involved...The clinic is very good with keeping patient confidentiality every time I checked in and their billing department kept us informed of what was due before each appointment...The Letrozole was covered through insurance two out of the three times.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I had no idea the doctor actually isn’t there when my IUI’s were done, but she fully mapped out everything and explained things in great deal. She has been a very personable doctor, but I feel like more investigating needs to happen with my case instead of just slapping on the unexplained infertility diagnosis. I feel like more ultrasounds should have been done throughout my cycles and progesterone should have been prescribed after each IUI. Her bedside manner is awesome. She gets to the point but is also very patient. She hasn’t pushed us to do IVF just yet and I respect her understanding that IVF is very expensive.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Ask as many questions as possible. Get to the bottom of your diagnosis and just have a conversation with her if you don’t understand everything.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I felt like she really listened to my concerns. She based my protocol off of her previous experience. She has gone into detail of all my cycles and has tweaked my next protocol based on my previous results.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I saw Dr. Holoch for the first time on October 14, 2019 and we put together a plan. My husband and I had been trying for over 1.5 years. For my next cycle, I was to take Letrozole 5mg on CD3-CD7, come in to check how many follicles I had on CD 10, then take Ovidrel trigger shot that night of CD10, and do an IUI two days later in the morning of CD12. I did this for two more cycles which included November 2019, December 2019, and January 2020. I was asked to report through their online portal the findings of an in home pregnancy test 14 days after each IUI. All of my IUI’s failed so I reported my CD1. Then the nurse would give me a new protocol. I asked about adding progesterone after the IUI’s and was told I didn’t need it since my uterine lining was thick enough. I also asked about doing more ultrasounds throughout each cycle and was told they are expensive and usually not necessary. Dr. Holoch explained that it may take a few IUI’s to get pregnant and to come see her again after 3 IUI’s. I made an appointment the beginning of February for the earliest date and wasn’t able to see her for another 2 months. I just did a telehealth video appointment with her on March 25. She said we should do at least 3 more IUI’s and use Clomid this time. She doesn’t want to push us into IVF due to financial burden. I didn’t have bad side effects using Letrozole and they produced follicles large enough. So once I am able to get Clomid prescribed (I can’t now due to COVID-19), we will start another cycle to do another IUI.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: I was assigned to multiple nurses through the online portal.)
The nursing staff were amazing through each of our IUI’s! They were kind, compassionate, and did 99% of the work involved. Anytime I had a question, it was answered and they really wanted to help.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic is very good with keeping patient confidentiality every time I checked in and their billing department kept us informed of what was due before each appointment. They were respectful and seem to care about the patients they serve.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The Letrozole was covered through insurance two out of the three times. The third time it was $45 for the 5 day supply. The follicular ultrasound was around $150 for each IUI. The doctor’s visits are around $200. The ovidrel trigger shot was $100 including shipping to our house. I think each IUI was about $300 and my husband’s sperm sample to be washed was about $300. I think we spent around $4,000 for all three IUI’s.

Dr. Marsh is compassionate and I feel she is smart. However, I don’t feel supported enough by her. I have only met her twice, but she is making all of my healthcare decisions regarding next steps in my fertility journey. I would think her weaknesses would include not communicating to her patient enough or getting to know someone and their situation. This should be apparent to any physician to get to know their patient.
I cannot stress this enough. I would make sure you stay on top of scheduling, treatments, medications, and follow-up appointments. [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine]. ... My husband went in for a sperm freeze for a future IUI cycle. The sperm was analyzed and thrown away. It was not frozen because the appointment was not correct, the order wasn’t placed, and the technician that roomed him did not ask what he was there for that day. The clinic called us to let us know. He went back to the clinic the same day to provide another one. ... Communication is a huge weakness for this clinic and it’s important to be your own advocate. I would say a strength is knowing the cycles, the treatments and understanding the diagnosis. However, compassion and communication are huge downfalls.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I would definitely make sure that you are in charge of your healthcare and you are staying on top of what you need to do to become pregnant. I would write every question you have down and don’t feel like you are being rushed out of the room.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
My experience with Dr. Marsh did not feel as though I was human, but not quite a number. In the matter of almost 2 years that I have been established with this RE, I have only seen this physician twice. During this time, I asked for a return appointment to discuss my next steps. After that appointment, I have yet to see my physician again. I continue to message my clinic regarding my treatments and the next step I want to take. The messages I receive in the portal do not make me feel that they have any idea how many cycles, IUIs, or miscarriages I have had. I feel when I message my doctor’s office I should receive a response with thought, understanding, and poise. I would not say this happens every time I interact with this office. However, I believe it is 85% of the time that I feel the nurses have not read my background and understood the treatments I have gone through prior to messaging me in regard to my care. In that regard, I do feel I am just a number to them. During my person to person interactions, I feel they are compassionate to an extent. If I was not a nurse and didn’t understand the importance of being in charge of your healthcare, then I would think my healthcare would fall through the cracks at this facility.
Describe the protocols Courtney Marsh used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I was never told what the name of any of my protocols that she put me on. I was told that we would start out with Progesterone (for induction of my cycle) and Letrozole. I believe my first cycle was 2.5mg tablets and taking 2 a day from days 3-7. Then, I would do OPKS to assess ovulation. My husband and I would have intercourse once there was a positive OPK for 3 days straight. My 2nd cycle I was increased to 7.5mg for days 3-7. This dose increase I had to ask the office for. I did get pregnant on my 2nd cycle of this strategy and it resulted in miscarriage. I had a D&C. Then, I did 3 cycles of Progesterone, Letrozole, and Ovidrel (trigger shot). These 3 cycles ended in negative pregnancy tests. These 6 cycles I was never given a rationale as to why this strategy is being used over another. I was outlined the basics of Progesterone induces the cycle, Letrozole helps you ovulate, and the trigger shot gives you a 99% ovulation chance. At this point, I requested that I see Dr. Marsh to talk about my next step. I was told that my only chance of getting pregnant would be IVF. At this appointment, IUI was never discussed with me if I didn’t bring it up myself. Dr. Marsh said this could be an option, but would not be successful and we should go straight to IVF. We took a couple months off from treatment and I started hormones again. I was told that we would be doing Progesterone for induction of cycle, Letrozole and trigger shots. I did not have a rationale as to why we could not try any different medications. I had one cycle with Progesterone induction. I did not do hormones this cycle due to not having a heavy flow. So, the next month I did IUI. I did Letrozole 7.5mg days 3-7, Ovidrel for trigger shot, and follicular ultrasounds to track my follicles for the day of IUI. This resulted in a negative pregnancy test. I am currently in the middle of my cycle as I type this. I was told directions by Dr. Marsh to do Letrozole 7.5mg days 3-7, no trigger shot, and OPKS this cycle. I will await another pregnancy test later this month.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
As a nurse, I feel it is important to show compassion. I did not feel that from this group of nurses, except one. Hilary is a great nurse at that facility! The only way to communicate with the nursing staff is through a portal. If you call the clinic, they advise you for any questions or concerns to message them on the portal. I continue to ask questions because I want to be in charge of my healthcare. I feel most of the time I continue to get answers that are not organized or I feel they do not know my care at all. I find myself frustrated and stressed when I receive a message back that I feel is not organized. If there is a portal that you use specifically for communication with your patients, then you should be able to pull up the old messages in regards to what the patient has said previously. This portal goes to all the nurses in the clinic and I usually get a different nurse messaging me back every time. I was never assigned a nurse coordinator to specifically know my treatment plan. This causes disorganization when I messaged the facility. My husband went in for a sperm analysis and freeze prior to a trip. I had been in communication with the nursing staff about my husband only being able to get that specific day off for an appointment. This appointment resulted in error and the sperm was not frozen. This was not acceptable and it was scheduled wrong. I have felt compassion from some of the nurses, but I have only seen one person to person. She was lovely. I have a hard time trusting people that are in charge of my care when the only time I can speak with them is through a portal.

My insurance covered the diagnostic and lab tests. I did have to go to a different facility for a test that was out of network for my insurance and ended up having to pay for that. My IUI was not covered by insurance.

It was not frozen because the appointment was not correct, the order wasn’t placed, and the technician that roomed him did not ask what he was there for that day. The clinic called us to let us know. He went back to the clinic the same day to provide another one. This sample would only be frozen for a future IVF cycle and not IUI. We did not have the money for IVF at the time and we wanted to IUI after him coming back from a trip to a Zika exposed place. Once he went into the clinic, I received another phone call that he could come back to give another sample 48 hours later to freeze for IUI. We did not have to pay for two freezing storages for both samples.

Dr. Marsh was friendly and answered all my questions throughout my first FET and during my initial meeting with her for the second FET. She was confident with the protocols for the second FET as they would be the same as the first FET that was successful. However, I had to ask to see her before my second FET...I think the only other time where I will see her again is on the actual transfer day...[she] discussed some of the changes to the overall FET protocol in the initial meeting, but some of the smaller changes in preparation for the FET were not explained until I started asking questions when examinations were different
it just seems like they are running a business [at KUMC} and trying to see how many people they can see as quickly as possible...After IVF and ICSI were completed, I signed a form to freeze the remaining donor sperm. My previous doctor, who was in the same office, told me that I could do that as they wouldn’t need all of it. They did not do it...When I ask questions about procedural changes, so I understand the tests or procedures being done, some seem like I am taking up their time
How was your experience with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Marsh was friendly and answered all my questions throughout my first FET and during my initial meeting with her for the second FET. She was confident with the protocols for the second FET as they would be the same as the first FET that was successful. However, I had to ask to see her before my second FET. When my lining was not thick enough, she added an injection to help prepare my body. She explained this and was confident that it would help. I think the only other time where I will see her again is on the actual transfer day. It wasn’t this way for me when I went through my first two transfers years ago. I only worked with Dr. Marsh during my embryo transfers as the doctor I had been working with to get to that point moved on to a different job.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Do your research and ask a lot of questions. I read articles on IVF and participated in discussion boards. This is how I learned about the endometrial scratch that I asked for on my first FET after the ET didn’t implant. Since there are not enough studies that show it works, doctors cannot offer it. However, when I asked for it, they said they would gladly do it. I also had it done on my second FET. As the patient, you need to become knowledgeable about this process before you start it. There are many reputable websites and journal articles devoted to IVF and the special circumstances that different individuals have that cause them to seek out assistive reproductive technologies and a reproductive endocrinologist. Read everything you can. Choose more recent articles and look for updated websites as the world of assistive reproductive technology is ever-changing. Talk with individuals who have gone through the process. Visit with a counselor who specializes in fertility counseling. He or she can provide you with information about your options. The facts about your options will help guide you to a decision that is best for your family-building journey. Knowledge is the key.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I felt like I was treated like a human the first time. Some of the people with whom I was working had gone through the same procedures. However, now it just seems like they are running a business and trying to see how many people they can see as quickly as possible. One of my appointments/tests was supposed to take about thirty minutes, according to the nurse when I spoke with her on the phone. It was over in five minutes. Then it felt as if they were rushing me out even though I had not had any blood tests done that the nurse said would be done at that appointment. Then they had to look up my chart to see what blood tests to run instead of having an appointment scheduled for the test like they used to do. I asked to see the transfer coordinator, but they said I couldn’t see her even though she said I would be meeting with her that day when I spoke with her on the phone prior to the appointment.
Describe the protocols Courtney Marsh used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For my ET and first FET, I took Estrace to prepare my lining for implantation and Endometrin to increase my Progesterone levels for three weeks before my transfer. About a week after my positive pregnancy test, my Progesterone level was dropping, so I had to start daily Progesterone injections until I was ten weeks. I gave birth to a healthy daughter. For my second FET, I took Estrace for three weeks and then started Delestrogen to help thicken my lining. Then I started Progesterone a week before my transfer. Injections of Progesterone and Delestrogen and Estrace tablets will continue for ten weeks after the FET if the embryo implants and I become pregnant. The Delestrogen injection is every three days. The Progesterone injection is every day once started. The Estrace is three tablets a day. I am in the process of this cycle.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff answer questions, but some are not as friendly as I was accustomed to during my first two transfers. I was working with a different nurse for my first two transfers, who was phenomenal, but she has moved on to a different job. Now, some seem annoyed when I ask multiple questions. However, with my last appointment, I had a different nurse, who was happy to answer all my questions and did not rush me out of the door. During my first two rounds, I was fully informed of details at and in between each appointment. However, this time I am given minimal information. After many years, protocols have changed, and it seems that I should already know them. When I ask questions about procedural changes, so I understand the tests or procedures being done, some seem like I am taking up their time. Some share what I need to know at that moment but are not forthcoming with the information that may be helpful for me to know about upcoming treatment. The patient needs to be knowledgeable and ask questions about protocols early. This is the only way I could get answers. At my latest appointment, I had a different nurse, who was more than happy to share protocols through the 10-week mark, which relieved some stress about what was to come, and I found out what had changed from my last FET.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
During the first ET and FET, Dr. Marsh’s office was on top of everything, giving me information about what I needed to do and how to be prepared for each appointment. They talked me through their process before I started a cycle. After arriving, I would sometimes be called back for a blood test and a sonogram at the same time and within minutes of arriving. They were on schedule or ahead of schedule. The nurse I had was amazing, making sure I understood the process and what was to come. She told me to call if I had any questions and was always friendly when I called. When I went to an exam room, each person came to me to go through her part (e.g., doctor, transfer coordinator, financial). Now, during my second FET, years later, the atmosphere is quite different, more business-like. The receptionists are still friendly and helpful, and some of the nurses are supportive. However, I have to ask to see the FET coordinator to turn in my paperwork or ask to have a blood test, instead of those being scheduled before I arrive and being called back to each person as it was my first time. I am in and out quickly, but it seems I have to ask more questions instead of being prepped from one appointment to the next. Even with the multiple emails I receive and the calendar posted, I do not always get all the information that I may need. I am aware of the process from the first two times; however, over the years, protocols have changed as science has advanced. Dr. Marsh discussed some of the changes to the overall FET protocol in the initial meeting, but some of the smaller changes in preparation for the FET were not explained until I started asking questions when examinations were different.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
For the second FET, it was $2, 875 in October 2023. The saline sonogram and blood tests before the cycle were separate from this price. They may vary based on the insurance coverage. Medications, tablets and injections, were about $200 for the first month after insurance covered part of it. To continue the tablets and injections through week 10, it will be approximately $300-$400 more.
Describe Courtney Marsh's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The first time, I could choose one or two embryos to transfer. I only chose one for my ET and my FET. This time, they only transfer one. The clinic no longer gives the option of transferring two.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
After IVF and ICSI were completed, I signed a form to freeze the remaining donor sperm. My previous doctor, who was in the same office, told me that I could do that as they wouldn’t need all of it. They did not do it. I called multiple times. I usually talked with an assistant, who didn’t know, as the person in charge would not talk with me. I sent a copy of the form. I was finally told that they do not do that even though there is paperwork to have that as an option. My previous doctor didn’t know and gave me the wrong information. I never knew who to ask what question because I often received the response that the question was someone else’s department. I gave up on getting an answer on how this miscommunication happened as the sperm was gone, and I could not get it back.

During my treatment, I spoke with Dr. Holoch twice. The protocols were one size fits all and not directed to concerns around my diagnosis/history. Concerns were rarely addressed...when it came to starting the Frozen Transfer and mock trial there were more questions than what was answered. I even had a medication error due to changes mid-cycle. Dr. Holoch never discussed the mock/ERA results or most recently a negative HCG post-FET...
the nursing staff [at KUMC] tries their best with limited resources or time available. The nurses generally sound stressed and rush conversations. Patients are not assigned to a patient. So back and forth messages maybe with multiple nursing and that bring chaos/confusion...The clinic will only allow for one embryo transfer...The front desk is amazing - always smiling and happy! How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
The original visit was very interactive. Answering questions and planning for surgery. I did leave this conversation with a clear understanding of how the surgery would play out. However, when it came to starting the Frozen Transfer and mock trial there were more questions than what was answered. I even had a medication error due to changes mid-cycle. Dr. Holoch never discussed the mock/ERA results or most recently a negative HCG post-FET.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Educate yourself on your history and have all of your questions/concerns ready! Review the SART and CDC data that is reported by the clinic!

I believe that the nursing staff tries their best with limited resources or time available. The nurses generally sound stressed and rush conversations. Patients are not assigned to a patient. So back and forth messages maybe with multiple nursing and that bring chaos/confusion.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The front desk is amazing - always smiling and happy! The weaknesses: Communication, patient focus, provider availability, etc. Additionally, the ARNP is very rough. For example biopsy day I was unable to completely relax my hips due to previous surgeries. She pulled on my knees and I started crying in pain. She told me I signed up for it.

Roughly 20K.
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic will only allow for one embryo transfer.
What specific things went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The 3most impactful errors within the clinic were changing medication during the mock trial without telling me (50 mg to 100mg PIO). Mock labs were not ordered thus not knowing the level of progesterone. Lastly, Negative HCG was put on my file post FET without notification from the provider or nurse. This is a failed cycle and the provider did not even reach out!

I felt very comfortable speaking with [Dr. Kristin Holoch]. I don’t feel like I got all the information all the time just because there wasn’t enough time to cover everything...I have diminished ovarian reserve...only looking like I’d have a couple eggs but after talking with [her] we decided to move forward and hope for the best. Unfortunately, after the retrieval we only got 2 eggs and they did not fertilize.
Everyone [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] is so nice and helpful. My only complaint is that no one reached out after my failed egg retrieval. I was bummed about that. The doctor called the next day to give me the bad news but I had to reach out to the nurses to schedule a call with Dr. Holoch to talk about next steps...I know she and the clinic are very busy but I wish they had checked in more especially after my retrieval resulted in nothing.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She was great and easy to talk to and let me ask all the questions I had. I felt very comfortable speaking with her. I don’t feel like I got all the information all the time just because there wasn’t enough time to cover everything. And I only talked to her twice on video and once on a phone call which was when my egg retrieval cycle wasn’t looking too good. She didn’t cancel it but left it up to my husband and I (I kind of wish she had said we should cancel or not). She was definitely very empathetic and knew it was a hard situation. She did tell me the good side and the bad side and asked if we wanted to go forward or not with the info we had. We wouldn’t know until we did retrieval whether it would work out or not. We felt confident about moving forward after speaking with her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She’s a great doctor but you won’t talk to her much
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?

We did 3 iuis (medicine, trigger shots and follicular ultrasounds). I felt confident they would work since I’ve been pregnant before but unfortunately they didn’t. Then we moved to ivf. Unfortunately, I have diminished ovarian reserve so it was only looking like I’d have a couple eggs but after talking with Dr. Holoch we decided to move forward and hope for the best. Unfortunately, after the retrieval we only got 2 eggs and they did not fertilize. We are now waiting to talk with Dr. Holoch next week about next steps.

Dr. Holoch took the time to sit down and explain all of our fertility options, the out of pocket costs they would require, and even drew us a picture of how the process worked. She equally respected me and my partner and both of our questions about the fertility process...She included helpful information such as most affordable places to pick up prescriptions that aren’t covered by insurance, and how to start tracking fertility affordable at home.
The [Kansas University Center] clinic is easy to find, clean, comfortable, and it was very quick to get in and see my doctor. Everything during our visit was completed in a timely manner, and my partner was valued as an equal part of the team, which was something that was very important to me as I am in an LGBTQ relationship...The nursing staff was kind, informative, and gave clear information on follow up care and outside resources
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr Holoch is kind, meet me at my level of knowledge and politely answered all of my questions in depth. She was also very straight forward about what to expect and cost requirements for each type of treatment. She included helpful information such as most affordable places to pick up prescriptions that aren’t covered by insurance, and how to start tracking fertility affordable at home.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I would tell them to come with all of the questions and concerns that they have without fear of being told they are being too anxious or asking too much, because she understands fertility is exciting and can also be scary.

We loved that he [Dr. Lydic] would draw out diagrams to describe certain processes with us. We did have a couple set backs during our IVF process and needed surgery to remove some scar tissue and he explained the importance of each step. We really only saw him in person twice during our care, a couple times on zoom, but he called us quite a bit during everything our whole process so we never felt like it was hard to communicate with him...
The office [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] ran very efficiently for monitoring appointments. Occasionally we have to wait 10-15 minutes to be seen but no longer...The only issue we had was once during an iui the nurse didn’t tell financial office to send in a prior authorization when they made the appointment. Luckily, finance office caught it and took care of it so it was still covered by insurance. The only other issue we ever had was couple times it took them a bit to respond to emails but that rarely was an issue for us...
How was your experience with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Lydic never once tested us like just a number at the clinic to collect money from. He took his time talking to us for 45+ minutes for each consultation and never rushed us. He answered every question we had and put our mi day at ease. We loved that he would draw out diagrams to describe certain processes with us. We did have a couple set backs during our IVF process and needed surgery to remove some scar tissue and he explained the importance of each step. We really only saw him in person twice during our care, a couple times on zoom, but he called us quite a bit during everything our whole process so we never felt like it was hard to communicate with him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Be patient with the process because it can be slow. Ask him any questions you have because he doesn’t kind answering your questions or explaining things more to you. Some people complained that the doctors are hard to get ahold of but anytime we wanted to talk to him, we just emailed the nurse in the portal asking to talk to him and he always called us in a timely manner. Also, don’t forget to advocate for yourself. Dr Lydic was very caring but we really pushed for what we thought was right for us.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Lydic is a very personable doctor. He took the time to answer any questions I had and go over every scenario with my husband and I. He called frequently during our iui’s and IVF process to check in on us and ask if we had any more questions come up.
Describe the protocols Michael Lydic used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We started with 4 iui’s. Two were with letrozol and two with clomid (all of which included trigger shots). For IVF, we did an egg retrieval, surgery to remove scar tissue from uterus while embryos were being genetically tested and then 2 frozen embryos transfers because our first failed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
We loved the nurses. Every time we came in they always checked on us to see how we had been, if we were feeling ok and if we had any questions. They were always invested in our process and excited for us and with us.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
They were all very nice and compassionate. We really liked how optimistic and hopeful they are. This process can be so draining that’s it’s nice to have them always so positive and reassuring every time we came in. The only issue we had was once during an iui the nurse didn’t tell financial office to send in a prior authorization when they made the appointment. Luckily, finance office caught it and took care of it so it was still covered by insurance. The only other issue we ever had was couple times it took them a bit to respond to emails but that rarely was an issue for us.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The office ran very efficiently for monitoring appointments. Occasionally we have to wait 10-15 minutes to be seen but no longer. For our schedule, we generally chose to come in first thing in the morning or as early as we could and it was no issue. Only once they had an issue finding a lab form in order for me to do my labs for monitoring but it was quickly figured out.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
We were lucky when it came to our iui’s that we had some insurance coverage. We paid a little for each medication we took (letrozol and clomid) and about $100/trigger shot. Our ultrasounds and labs were all covered and each iui cost us about $250 total for the procedure and medicine. IVF was all out of pocket for us. Since we chose to do genetic testing, the up front cost was $13,750 at our first appointment, medications were another approximate $3000 (we did apply for compassionate care program through the pharmacy for a small discount and that number was AFTER the discount) and another $3000 for the second transfer and medications.
Describe Michael Lydic's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
He really pushed for us to only transfer one embryo at al time initially based on the risks and complications pregnancy and birth can be for multiple. We talked to him though that our goal was to only do 2 frozen transfers and we really wanted to transfer one and then if necessary for a 2nd FET then go transfer 2. He agreed and after egg retrieval we only had 3 genetically normal embryos and it worked out that we transferred one for a failed cycle and then transferred our last 2 ams are currently pregnant with one baby.

[Dr. Marsh] had to adjust my meds each cycle to get me here and I am so very grateful...With each procedure her office has done I have been given specific easy to follow instructions. I always know the next steps and I feel like I have a say in my care...I also feel like she does not do unnecessary testing, she had explained in our initial visit what tests are important and what ones would be optional and let me decide from there
I absolutely love that [Kansas U Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine has] a financial team. I really want to take a moment to thank the financial team for working so hard with me and my insurance to get pre approvals and to give me out of pocket estimates. They are amazing! The front desk staff is very polite and welcoming. Again the nurses they have staffed are top of the line in care and compassion. They also have a in office lab that makes blood draws very convenient.
How was your experience with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I see several reviews that patients were up set to communicate mostly with the nurses. I for one do not mind this at all. Maybe it comes from my healthcare background… but I know that the info I am getting from them is still from a doctor/my doctor. I have mostly communicated through the portal which I actually love, because I can go back and reread my instructions or advice if I forget, as well as I have access to all my medical records at all times. This is my 5th doctor for infertility and by far the doctor that has got us the farthest in our infertility journey. We just got to a point where I am ovulating on my open tube side and did our first iui yesterday. She had to adjust my meds each cycle to get me here and I am so very grateful. I only wish I had found her sooner. With each procedure her office has done I have been given specific easy to follow instructions. I always know the next steps and I feel like I have a say in my care. I trust her and every person in her office. With infertility certain procedures have to been timed with specific cycle days, with that being said, sometimes my tests are performed by the nurses or available doctor ( not always dr. Marsh ), again something I do not mind at all knowing they have just a few days notice to work me into a specialty clinic. All the doctors I have come into contact with have been just as great as Dr. Marsh. I also feel like she does not do unnecessary testing, she had explained in our initial visit what tests are important and what ones would be optional and let me decide from there. The costs were outlined the afternoon after my appointment, so I never got a surprise bill and have been able to also proceed on my timeline physically, mentally, and financially. I had emailed my 13 years of records to her office prior to my initial appointment and to my surprise she had already read them before seeing me and knew my history. I was so impressed with her going over my records and knowing where she could fill those gaps and get us going. Her personality was very nice and I felt she listened and like she cares. Would highly recommend her.

Describe the protocols Courtney Marsh used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I had an endometrial biopsy, an SIS. I have had many labs. My husband has had a SA. We have done medicated cycles that include trigger shots and finally our first IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff is amazing. I have not had one team member upset me in anyway. They always review the plan with me when they take me back for various scans and tests. They always tell me what to expect and my results for scans is always sent to me within an hour or 2 of leaving the office, as well as my instructions and an updated plan. They are always as gentle as they can be during procedures and are always comforting.

Total cost up to this point is around $4,700 with this specific doctors office. Including labs, testing, scans, in office biopsy, and IUI. This cost is prior to any insurance coverage. I do not have infertility coverage, however some labs were still covered and office visits due to the codes they used.

In the 3.5 months that I was a patient of Dr Lydic, I only saw him once (and it wasn’t in person but via telehealth). All communication was with the RN or once, the NP...Due to COVID, our initial meeting with the physician was via TH. He had a PowerPoint that seemed generic but provided a baseline understanding of options. I was instructed to come to the clinic for an initial ultrasound and lab work...I received a notification via the app (the primary way the clinic communicates) that an additional lab was ordered...I messaged the nurses (messaging the doctor isn’t an option on the app), and asked for insight. The message I received back from the RN was the plan for another IUI cycle. There was no regard for my request, simply a med plan for a second IUI cycle.

How was your experience with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
In the 3.5 months that I was a patient of Dr Lydic, I only saw him once (and it wasn’t in person but via telehealth). All communication was with the RN or once, the NP. Thus, it is difficult to rate him however, I was very disappointed with the practice as a whole.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Unfortunately, I would not recommend Dr Lydic because the practice is so poorly managed and communication is terrible.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I only had one encounter with Dr Lydic and it was via telehealth. Given, it is hard to review him. My main concerns were secondary to the practice itself.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Difficult to reach as had to communicate via an app. Often not able to answer my questions.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
In the face of “unexplained infertility”, I looked at multiple practices in the KC for guidance. Ultimately, KU was able to get us in the quickest. My husband works for KU so we both felt confident in the institution. Due to COVID, our initial meeting with the physician was via TH. He had a PowerPoint that seemed generic but provided a baseline understanding of options. I was instructed to come to the clinic for an initial ultrasound and lab work. I completed the US and was waiting to get my labs drawn when I received a notification via the app (the primary way the clinic communicates) that an additional lab was ordered. I asked the sonographer and the lab personal as to why but neither were able to provide insight. I was instructed to message the nurses via the app…I WAS SITTING IN THE CLINIC! I should have known then that communication was going to be a challenge but again, my husband works for KU and we think highly of the institution. After a failed medicated cycle and IUI, I messaged the nurses (messaging the doctor isn’t an option on the app), and asked for insight. The message I received back from the RN was the plan for another IUI cycle. There was no regard for my request, simply a med plan for a second IUI cycle. In reviewing the cycle, there was a med I had never heard of added. Because in the initial meeting (which for the record, was the only time we communicated with the physician in the 3.5 months we utilized the practice), the doctor had never mentioned this med, I sent a message and asked if I could get a call to get clarity. I wanted to understand what the med does, why it was ordered, and any side effects I should be aware of. I am a RN so I didn’t think it was too much to ask to receive basic education regarding a medication. When the RN called, she sounded annoyed. I understand it was a Sunday. I too was on-call for my nursing job so, I understand that it can interfere with one’s personal life but, that comes with being on-call. The nurse did explain what the medication does but when I asked why it was prescribed (did you notice something last cycle that indicated this med should be added or, is it is just the next medication in the toolbox), the nurse responded “it’s just what the doctor ordered.” I understand the essence of unexplained infertility, but I think it is a patients prerogative to understand why, even if the answer is “this is just the next shot in the dark.” I completed the cycle as prescribed and when I went in for IUI, this time a NP did the procedure (the first time, it was done but an RN). While there, I asked the NP if we could ask some questions. She was open to answering my questions and I thanked her saying “the communication hasn’t been the best and I just want to make sure that I understand my plan of care.” She became defensive and told me I should have messaged the nurses if I had questions. I told I did and she immediately said, “it is the volume of patients that we have here….years ago, I did everything from the counseling to the ultrasounds to the labs and now there is a sonographer, a lab tech, the nurses and things fall through the cracks because there are so many patients.” She proceed to tell me that she has “been doing this for a long time” and I, “ just need to trust the process because she is reviewing my records all the time.” Mind you, this encounter was the first time I had ever met, let alone communicated with, the NP. My husband equated the clinic to making us feel like cows being cycled through. That was my last straw. KU may be able to get to you in sooner than other practices in KC but, if you are looking for a fertility practice where you are valued as a patient, where discussion regarding your specific plan of care is ongoing, and where your questions are welcomed, I would encourage you to consider alternative options.

Dr nangia was completely dismissive to my concerns over DNA fragmentation, despite the latest research showing benefits to surgical sperm retrieval over ejaculated sperm for men with elevated DNA fragmentation...He was willing to continue my clomid to see if that would boost my sperm counts...It doesn’t appear he is very forward thinking with regard to research and his field. Male infertility is rapidly advancing and he doesn’t seem to be.

It doesn’t appear he is very forward thinking with regard to research and his field. Male infertility is rapidly advancing and he doesn’t seem to be.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ajay Nangia at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
He was rushed. I think he was behind that day. It’s also possible his nursing staff was insufficient that day.
Describe the protocols Ajay Nangia used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
He was willing to continue my clomid to see if that would boost my sperm counts. I’m scheduled for a follow up after that’s been given time to work.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Looked like it was their first day. Not sure where things were. Had a hiccup with my clomid Rx and communicated with a nurse via patient portal. She was very unknowledgeable about clomid for male infertility, which struck me as concerning, given that it isn’t an obscure treatment.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
The weakness is dr nangias approach. He doesn’t appear to be very up to date on research, or he’s so research skeptical that he’s not willing to treat until there’s overwhelming evidence for a course of action. Infertility is a rapidly advancing field, and that attitude will abandon patients. I was point blank told that my sperm weren’t the problem, that my wife’s eggs were (age). Given my dna fragmentation test results and the research associated with them, that simply isn’t the case. While my wife’s eggs are AN issue, it’s poor practice to ignore other potential problems.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ajay Nangia at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Pending. Should be covered by my insurance.

We are remote to the clinic, so we have had testing done at our local hospital. There have been a couple times where there were delays in getting transferred test results to the clinic. This may be the fault of KU med’s medical records department however.

How was your experience with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I’ve seen several negative reviews related to her bedside manner. Which I don’t fully understand. I often wonder if it is because emotions are high during infertility treatments. I really appreciated her honesty- it is what we needed. She delivered her thoughts in direct but gentle manner.

Our retrieval was done the end of one year and our transfer the next. The consents changed from year to year and they refused to schedule our transfer until the new consents were filled out. Not only was this really frustrating but I felt like our transfer date was held hostage. We had filled out consents once before. Clearly, we consented. This caused so much unneeded stress. We rushed around (both at work) trying to figure out how to scan and sign the paperwork from different locations. Our transfer date should have been scheduled with the understanding that it would be cancelled in x days If the consents were not completed. They sent new consents via the portal that could not be printed or edited. I had to message them asking for them to be emailed. When we were finally able to return the consents via email they couldn’t find them because they ended up in a spam folder. We They were also scheduling 2-3 months out which they didn’t mention with our first contact.

I am so grateful to Dr. Holoch and the guidance she provided us during our journey. She treated every conversation thoughtfully, she always presnted scnearios with alternatives and implications - I felt as though the decisions were in my power, but that we were informed with her recommendation and the reasoning behind it..
I loved the [Kansas University Center] for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and the ease of the portal for our clinic... The biggest weakness of this clinic is the finance team and their processes. How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I am so grateful to Dr. Holoch and the guidance she provided us during our journey. She treated every conversation thoughtfully, she always presnted scnearios with alternatives and implications - I felt as though the decisions were in my power, but that we were informed with her recommendation and the reasoning behind it. With our MFI, she offered us the option to try IUI first, but set the expectation from the ouset that we more than likely would need IVF (but anticipated us being very successful in that process). I felt encouraged and supported throughout.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Be prepare with your questions whenever you have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Holoch, since more often you will be engaging with the nursing team. Know your preferences going in, but be open to her professional opinion.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Her bedside manner is really terrific and she has a kind, caring, but smart approach to speaking with her patients.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Dr. Holoch worked in partnership with Dr. Nanjia, the primary Urologist on the KU Advanced Reproductive Medicine Team, to manage the overall protocol for mysely and my husband. This was a HUGE advantage for us, as we felt that we were being seen as a team, by a team. Multiple sperm analyses informed us that we were likely in the IVF range, but we did have one outlier above that range which led Dr. Holoch and Dr. Nangia to be open to IUIs. We had one full IUI fail, and a second one canceled due to volume. Following that, Dr. Nangia prescribed chlomid for my husband. After the canceled IUI (and after COVID stay at home orders were lifted), we moved forward with planning for our first (and only so far) IVF cycle. Dr. Holoch is a firm believer in genetic testing, which I am grateful for. It gave us a better sense of the success of our cycle and allowed us to better plan for our future. We had our first transfer in October, which was successful - we're currently 8.5 weeks pregnant!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Hillary)
I loved working with the nursing staff at KU, especially the IVF cycle team (who will be with you through your retrieval). Hillary especially was fantastic - kind, easy to relate to, and on top of it. There is a different set of nurses who support you during transfer. Raquel was also easy to work with, direct and quick to reply!
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
I loved the physicians, nurses, pharmacists and the ease of the portal for our clinic. I really appreciated the partnerhip between Dr. Holoch and Dr. Nangia to treat my husband and myself as a couple given our MFI diagnosis - it made the process so much smoother since they were in the same group of physicians (although not physically located at the same place). The biggest weakness of this clinic is the finance team and their processes. I had an instance where my IUI moved forward without prior authorization approval, and the team tried to blame it on me as a patient for not formally informing my nurse team AND the finance team of my cycle Day 1. They absolutely should have the ability to share info internally without that burden falling on the patient. Beyond that, the team was abrasive and not friendly to work with, like the other team members were. They also were not able to provide me with any sort of estimate for our transfer costs, unlike the estimates provided for our IVF retrieval cycle which left us completely in the dark.

We had coverage and did not have to pay for everything out of pocket.

IVF Cycle 1 [with Dr. Holoch] - high dose antagonist; used because of DOR diagnosis. Cycle cancelled due to low response...IVF Cycle 2 - low dose antagonist; she thought the high doses from previous cycle “fried” my eggs; cycle cancelled due to low response...IVF Cycle 3 - Lupron flare protocol; retrieved 7 eggs, 4 mature, 3 blasts, all complex abnormal...was very transparent with us when setting expectations. She worked with us to develop a treatment plan that she believed would achieve a pregnancy, however I turned out to be a low responder. She was not afraid to try different protocols or new treatments, which I appreciated.
The nurses and staff in the clinic [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] were excellent. When we had a snafu with their billing dept and insurance pre-approval, the whole team rallied around us to make things right. They knew us by name, sympathized with us when we had let downs, and celebrated our wins with us...When we messaged to start a cycle before the holidays, their financial team was not notified and therefore didn’t get the insurance pre-approval in time. We proceeded with the cycle with the assumption that insurance would approve it.

When I walked in, he asked me personal questions alongside trying to understand my husband's and my wants and needs. He drew pictures to show me what to expect, set a timeline, and gave me resources. He allowed me to ask questions, and helped me to understand the science of my body. He was thorough in making sure my thyroid was not crazy high and also ensured thorough testing for my family genetics and my husband's body.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
My advice is to be prepared to be patient. It is a lot of driving to and from the clinic, but that is to be expected with fertility.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
He used my name, remembered small details, and was kind and explanatory on procedures

We started with timed intercourse. I would begin my period and take letrozol for five days then the tenth day would get an Ultrasound. If my eggs were ready, I injected a hormone shot to stimulate ovulation where my husband and I would have timed intercourse for 3 days in a row. I would take a pregnancy test two weeks later and email if I was or was not pregnant. Twice, my eggs did not look ready. I opted to not go in for a second ultrasound and they gave me a later start date for timed intercourse.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Sarah)
Sarah would be encouraging and kind when I came in, and when I was not pregnant, I felt like it hurt her as badly. Though it was hard for me, I heard the staff cheering for a woman who finally was able to achieve pregnancy. They were invested in the success of the women that came through.

I was given a packet with resources sharing ways to pay for everything. I was also given a spreadsheet, and I was able to calculate around $600 a treatment for timed intercourse. It ended up being less with my insurance, and I received bills in a timely manner. The spreadsheet was so helpful I was able to plan out everything in advance.

You usually only see [Dr. Kristin Holoch] during the consults, so you want to make sure to get your questions answered then. You won't be seeing her on the days where you have an ultrasound or insemination...She is very good about explaining everything clearly. She is very respectful of us as patients and is very LGBTQ friendly...When our treatment had to be postponed for a month for factors outside of her control, she called us on the phone and talked us through the new plan.
You don't have to wait to get on the IVF calendar more than a week or so - they [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] don't do batches of IVF like some clinics do. It can be difficult to get ahold of someone on the phone - they push all the communication to the eIVF portal. We were surprised at first that it was always the nurse practitioners who do the IUIs, but they are also really great....
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She is very good about explaining everything clearly. She is very respectful of us as patients and is very LGBTQ friendly. I really feel like she's invested in our success. She is up to date on the latest treatments and is very sympathetic when things don't go as planned. She understands how costly everything is and works with us to make a plan that fits our needs.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Bring all of your questions with you to your appointment. You usually only see Dr. Holoch during the consults, so you want to make sure to get your questions answered then. You won't be seeing her on the days where you have an ultrasound or insemination.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She takes the time to explain things very clearly. She's very sympathetic. When our treatment had to be postponed for a month for factors outside of her control, she called us on the phone and talked us through the new plan.
Describe the protocols Kristin Holoch used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We did hybrid cycle IUIs with Letrozole plus Gonal-F injections. This was particularly helpful with making sure that we ovulated. For the IVF cycle we used Menopur, Gonal-F, and Cetrotide.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Christina)
They are very good about responding to questions through the eIVF portal. It can be difficult to get ahold of someone outside of the portal, but we have had the nurses call us on the phone before to talk through specifics.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
This is an academic facility, so they are up to date with all of the most current treatments. They have the most resources of any clinic in the area. You don't have to wait to get on the IVF calendar more than a week or so - they don't do batches of IVF like some clinics do. It can be difficult to get ahold of someone on the phone - they push all the communication to the eIVF portal. We were surprised at first that it was always the nurse practitioners who do the IUIs, but they are also really great.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
IVF is about $13,500 plus medications plus additional costs if you decide to do genetic testing. IUIs are $400 for the insemination. Ultrasounds are about $187 each.
Describe Kristin Holoch's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
This clinic really only does single embryo transfers. They might do multiple transfers, but it isn't encouraged.

[Dr. Kristin Holoch] is a very personable and empathetic doctor. She delivers information with a softness that I find comforting when receiving pertinent information. During IVF, she was attentive to our situation and was able to explain procedures in a simple and concise way. She always made an effort to ask about our lives and get to know us as more than patients...Dr. Holoch suggested one embryo transfer at a time. She explained the pros/cons of one vs. two and ultimately let me choose.
They have a great staff [at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine]. The doctors are attentive and the nursing staff really know their stuff. I began to feel like a regular after awhile! I would be sure to prepare questions ahead of time...We paid around $12,000 for IVF including retrieval and one transfer. Additional transfers were around $2,000 each.
How was your experience with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Holoch is a very personable and empathetic doctor. She delivers information with a softness that I find comforting when receiving pertinent information. During IVF, she was attentive to our situation and was able to explain procedures in a simple and concise way. She always made an effort to ask about our lives and get to know us as more than patients. One thing I do think this clinic could improve on is communication outside of the physical clinic. A good portion of IVF (injections, pills, etc.) is done in your own home. This requires a good deal of communication between your nurse, your doctor, and your pharmacy. I would have liked a more spelled out guide about what the nurses would be in charge of and when I would see my doctor or if I needed to contact the pharmacy myself. As much as I love my doctor and this clinic, what is obvious information to a medical staff is not always obvious to their patients.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Write down your questions beforehand and ask for specifics
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
I have seen Dr. Holoch for 3 years for a variety of endometriosis reasons, as well as for IVF. She always remembers little details that I have told her in the last, even if it has been awhile since I’ve seen her. It never feels rushed when we talk. She gives me her whole attention.

I’m sorry, I cannot remember at this point.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
My nurse was attentive and helpful, but it’s been too long to remember more than that. I had a good experience overall with the nursing staff.
Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
They have a great staff. The doctors are attentive and the nursing staff really know their stuff. I began to feel like a regular after awhile! I would be sure to prepare questions ahead of time. I would come with a notebook and pencil to each appointment. There is so much new information that you will want to remember. I assumed everything would be reiterated through literature or my personal IVF plan, but it was not, so I was happy that I had taken notes.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
We paid around $12,000 for IVF including retrieval and one transfer. Additional transfers were around $2,000 each. Our IVF medications from Freedom Pharmacy were around $15,000, but most was covered by my insurance. We opted to not do genetic testing, because we couldn’t afford it.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
My husband had a semen sample test, but never received the results. When I asked at my next appointment, they told me his results, but I expected a phone call or some sort of communication beforehand.

Dr. Lydic always made sure we knew that he was thinking of us, and taking care of us. There were multiple times that he would call me personally, after hours, to check in. ... Dr Lydic was compassionate and caring. There were multiple times that a cycle would get cancelled for various reasons and he made sure to call me personally to see how I was dealing with the news. We lost identical twins at almost 20 weeks and he called a few weeks out to discuss what happened and ask how we were holding up. He communicated procedures thoroughly and answered questions with ease.
The nursing staff at KU med is incredible. They were all so kind and were supportive through every process. They communicated quickly and thoroughly, and always showed compassion. There is a huge spot in my heart for a certain ultrasound tech there, I believe her name was Allie. She showed an emotional attachment to our journey and laughed and cried with us. There is literally nothing negative I could say about the nursing team.

We underwent three IUIs, which all resulted in negative pregnancy tests. When we first consulted with Dr Lydic I had expressed that I only wanted to do three IUIs before moving on to IVF and he agreed that that was a good plan. I started a stimulation cycle with global-f but was not responding to medications so we decided to cancel and try again at a higher dosage. This was successful and we had a retrieval resulting in 11 embryos, which we did not PGS test. We started a frozen transfer cycle with estrogen patches but it was canceled due to a small cyst on the lining of my uterus. The second round be switched to estradiol tablets and PIO, which was successful. We transferred one frozen day 5 embryo, which successfully implanted and split into identical twins. We found out at 12 weeks that one of the twins had a bladder outlet obstruction and at 19+4 we found that neither boy had heartbeats. I was induced and they were born the next morning.

The clinic is well run. Every member of the staff I have met was full of love and empathy, and were there to hold your hand through really tough waters. Something I did not enjoy was that the main form of communication is through an online portal, so urgent matters can sometimes be lost.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Lydic at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
For our IUIs and retrieval we had insurance coverage, and everything was a breeze. For our transfer we paid out of pocket and it was a solid 2500, which covered monitoring ultrasounds, transfer, bloodwork and pregnancy ultrasound
Describe Michael Lydic's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
Dr Lydic mentioned they preferred to only transfer one embryo unless there were underlying factors like age or recurrent loss.

Dr. Holoch is friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful...if you can reach her. You aren't able to communicate directly with her, rather only with nurses through the portal. Communication is terrible and this makes cycles much more stressful than they already are...[she prefers] single embryo transfer...[new patient advice]Treatment is overall based on what a "normal" woman's cycle is. If you want to switch things up, you really have to self-educate and self-advocate.
Strengths [of Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] : not an overly long wait time to begin treatment, inexpensive Weaknesses: very poor and stressful communication; doctors work as a team, so you won't receive individualized one-on-one treatment...IUI - $600 medication - varied by cycle ultrasound - $90 follow-up with dr - $75

Have a list of questions for your initial appointment and ask for a followup once you begin and get a better grasp.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Kristin Holoch at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Holoch is great, but I hardly ever see her. Nurses and technicians absolutely make you feel like a number... it starts to feel like a cattle chute of women going in and out. Ultrasounds are rushed and no information is given... it feels like they're trying to get you out as soon as possible, and I'm constantly hearing how busy they are, which makes it seem like they're too busy for me. We absolutely don't feel like any of them have a vested interest in our personal experience. Treatment was continually based on what is "typical" for a woman's cycle, even when my cycle proved to be atypical.

Terrible communicators. One nurse will tell you one thing, and another will say something completely different. Incorrect instructions have been given multiple times, so you have to literally double-check everything they say. It would be great to communicate via the phone to help combat this, but the only way to reach them is via the portal, where they are more often than not slow to respond. There have also been times when I don't receive a response and have to check back in.

Showed up for an appointment that the nurse forgot to book, multiple times have received conflicting information from nurses, at some point they quit giving you any information during ultrasounds and now make you wait for a message from the portal, was told to take prescription but failed to send it in resulting in inability to follow prescribed treatment

Given that I went in for egg freezing at the age of 41, Dr. Marsh was realistic about my options. She arranged for diagnostic testing to first determine if I was a good candidate for freezing (I was). While this ultimately added to the cost of treatment, I appreciated that she didn't want to let me proceed without first knowing my hormones looked good and I had a good amount of follicles each cycle
Nurses [at KU Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine] were responsive via the online portal system. I know some previous reviewers had problems with that, but I always got a response fairly quickly and all explanations were clear...Because they see so many people, the processes are fairly standardized and fluid. They know what they're doing and they are efficient, but if you want long convos and hand-holding this isn't probably the place for you. For egg freezing, the efficient, brisk pace is great. The only weakness is in the billing. I had some trouble with having a payment not reflected in my balance, but that was taken care of quickly when I called.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
Just like with any fertility doctor, I'd go in with specific questions about your options, treatment, etc. You are not likely to see Dr. Marsh much during your treatment, so being ready with questions your first appointment is helpful (though nurses also do answer/discuss with Dr. Marsh as needed during treatment).
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
While this clinic sees a higher number of patients than some others and can lead some to feel like a number, I feel in my initial consult I was given the amount of time necessary to honestly discuss the viability of egg freezing for myself with Dr. Marsh. I also never felt that I was treated rudely or dismissively by any of the other staff (nurses, lab techs, ultrasound, etc.). They were efficient, but not rude.
Describe the protocols Courtney Marsh used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I was given a fairly standard injection protocol for egg freezing: Menopur 150IU/Gonal F 350IU Day 1-7, followed by the same with the addition of Ganirelix 250mcg day 8-11 w/ trigger day 11. I just happened to be very responsive to the meds and produced a lot of eggs.

Dr. Marsh is friendly and very knowledgeable. However, I felt like my care plan is not fully satisfying my needs, and that might be that I am not pregnant yet or I am not grasping the plan. We have been trying for 2 years next month, 8 failed medicated cycles, and yet when I ask questions I feel like I get the bare minimum answers. "try again next month, don't give up", "everything looks fine", but no additional labs or test are done to investigate why this is not working. I am might be jaded when it comes to this but I feel like I have to go above and beyond to advocate for myself.
The nursing staff is great at KU. You will see them more than Dr. Marsh, they are compassionate, quick to respond, and friendly. I have notice some turnover which is a little concerning, but all of the nurses that I have come into contact have been very pleasant!...IUI - $600...There are often a long waiting period when doing an IUI, I wish that they would call when the specimen has been completed. They typically tell you when to show up after your partner's appointment and I have waited close to 2 hours (after my scheduled time) before the specimen was ready. The clinic has a friendly front desk. The front desk staff can be a little frazzled sometimes, but I just patiently work with them. The billing is such a pain, if you have any insurance that covers fertility treatment it can be a pain to get accurate invoices, I finally got a bill corrected from January. Also, they require you pay upfront for IUI services, which is no problem but then they bill you for it after as well, which again is a pain. When I called to get this corrected, they expected me to know that it wasn't a bill, that my payment had not posted in their systems...

Take her demeanor with a grain of salt, she can come off as being curt, but again I have very pleasant conversations with her, when I actually do speak to her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
All communication is done via email and makes it difficult to have a personal touch. I have only visited with Dr. Marsh twice, the rest have been via email and her nursing staff (which is wonderful). I had to beg the front desk to speak in person with a Nurse when I was really struggling with the fertility drugs. I did get to be seen, but it made me feel like I had to go above and beyond to advocate for myself and not be 'another email'.
Describe the protocols Courtney Marsh used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We started with an HSG that showed a partial blocked right tube and a pre diagnosis of PCOS. Then was prescribed Letrozole 5mg starting CD 3 - CD 7 and did follicle ultrasounds on CD 10. Follicles did not respond and she upped the Letrozole to 7 mg, again follicle ultrasound on CD 10. The right follicles were the only side responding and not very well. Letrozole said the same, but added GONAL-F 50 mg injections on CD 7 - CD 10. The left side started to respond but my dominate follicles were on the right. We did this treatment for 6 months, and decided to take a break last May. In August 2019 we started again and in addition to the Letrozole and GONAL-F, Clomid (do not have the dosage but it was 3 tablets a night CD 3 - 7) was added. We had a great response with the Clomid and was able to do our first IUI in August, it failed. We did the same cycle plan in October, the Clomid and Letrozole responded better and I did not have to do the injections of the GONAL-F. We tried another IUI end of September and I am currently in the TWW to know if it was successful.

I'm sure Dr. Marsh is a good clinician but her bedside manner is non-existent. I could tell immediately that this was not the right fit for us. From the start we needed to push for the answers to our questions and appropriate testing. Her unwillingness to run the tests we requested resulted in us having to come back in for a second consultation with another physician, thus costing another $300...cutting attitude, appeared irritated by our questions, spent only 10 mins in the room with us
As a teaching hospital [Kansas University] there will often times be students attending your appointments, you can decline to have them included if you wish. Go prepared with questions and utilized the portal as often as you need...Nursing staff answered portal emails promptly with a phone call or email response back. They were always compassionate and sympathetic to my experience....

Describe your experience with Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine.
This is part of a university so know that there may be some hesitation on using drugs or devices off label. If you have an interest in things like Invocell or HGH you may need to go elsewhere. As a teaching hospital there will often times be students attending your appointments, you can decline to have them included if you wish. Go prepared with questions and utilized the portal as often as you need. The nursing staff will get back with you quickly.

After our first frozen embryo transfer that sadly ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks, Dr Lydic took the time to make sure that my husband and I had everything that we needed to help cope with what had happened and he just listened to anything we needed to talk about...He prefers single embryo transfers...He’s very compassionate, and caring and you can honestly tell that he cares about his job and his patients
[Kansas Univ Center] as a whole is extremely clean and well maintained, the staff is usually very nice...$11,750 for one complete cycle of IVF and one Fresh/ Frozen transfer. $2,500 for each additional FET...staff here at this clinic were always very friendly and compassionate about my care but not only mine they treated my husband like he was part of the whole process and not just focused on me...

After our first frozen embryo transfer that sadly ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks, Dr Lydic took the time to make sure that my husband and I had everything that we needed to help cope with what had happened and he just listened to anything we needed to talk about. He treated us like we were actual human beings and not just a number. I would recommend him to anyone needing any kind of fertility help. He’s very compassionate, and caring and you can honestly tell that he cares about his job and his patients.
Describe the protocols Michael Lydic used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We went straight into IVF I was diagnosed with PCOS and my husband had low sperm count, we had already tried 6 rounds of clomid with my OB at home, with no success so Dr Lydic felt that IVF would be our best option and would save us financially in the long run. We did one round of IVF and our retrieval resulted in 32 eggs with 30 of them fully mature. Out of our 30 eggs we ended with 10 healthy frozen embryos. We just did our first transfer that unfortunately ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks. But we plan to try another transfer soon.

Very compassionate, and very informative.

The clinic as a whole is extremely clean and well maintained, the staff is usually very nice. The only thing that I would complain about is the check in process could use some updating to help things move a little smoother.

She [Dr. Courtney Marsh] agreed to ovarian drilling if I gave her three cycles. She consulted another physician to do the ovarian drilling and never spoke with me about it. I found out from the other physician. I got approval for the drilling surgery and now she has changed her mind on doing the drilling and never told me why. Now she says she wants me to do IVF with her instead but I have a living child conceived naturally. She just doesn’t speak to me and doesn’t work with me...When she makes an agreement with a patient, it would be nice to know exactly why that agreement can’t be upheld? I feel cheated out of my care and I feel like I wasted my time and added more heartache.
Ultrasounds and lab all in the clinic [Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine]. That was great! I didn’t have to go anywhere. Very little wait time. Just no surprises. They cannot work you in if you have an emergency. I tried to get in early once for an ultrasound and couldn’t...Everyone I worked with was really organized and fast. I truly enjoyed the staff...My insurance covered the costs unless Doctor Marsh wanted any special testing.
How was your experience with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She is a knowledgeable physician. She is a wonderful and respectful woman. Her patients need to see her and they need an explanation from her. Especially when she is frequently changing their care plan. When she makes an agreement with a patient, it would be nice to know exactly why that agreement can’t be upheld? I feel cheated out of my care and I feel like I wasted my time and added more heartache.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
You won’t see her. Write down everything you want to ask her. And keep it with you often because she might call you when you’re in the car.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Courtney Marsh at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine?
She left me pregnant with a blighted ovum for 3 weeks before doing a D and C and never told me why. I made an appointment with her in the first place this year because I wanted ovarian drilling. My only living child is the result of ovarian drilling. She agreed to ovarian drilling if I gave her three cycles. She consulted another physician to do the ovarian drilling and never spoke with me about it. I found out from the other physician. I got approval for the drilling surgery and now she has changed her mind on doing the drilling and never told me why. Describe the protocols Courtney Marsh used in your cycles at Kansas University Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For my cycles we used letrozal 2.5 mg 3 pills once per day on cycle days 5-9. Then I did Gonal-f 50 units on cycle days 10 and 11 in the evening. Then I had ultrasound monitoring and when ready an HCG trigger shot and timed intercourse.

I tried to get in early once for an ultrasound and couldn’t. We waited a good while but that’s my fault. The original appointment time didn’t work but they can’t really work you in earlier.
