This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr. Adams cared and wanted me to succeed...was pleasant and always had a word of encouragement...is very knowledgable at her field of medicine and can provide you with all kind of relevant information on things...has great bedside manner and presence...luteal phase stimulation
Strengths [of Kindbody - Portland] -the clinic itself is a warm, bright an inviting place...Weaknesses-The front desk staff are not always the friendliest. Often a lot of turnover...The billing office is not good about responding to correspondence via the clinic's patient portal...hard to get a hold of a financial navigator regarding cycle costs and payments.
How was your experience with Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
I have been under the care of other doctor's and have not had the same experience with them as Dr. Adams. I felt that Dr. Adams cared and wanted me to succeed just as much as I wanted to succeed at starting my family. She was pleasant and always had a word of encouragement.
Whenever I had questions, I was able to get an appointment to talk to her. Dr. Adams is very knowledgable at her field of medicine and can provide you with all kind of relevant information on things.
Dr. Adams has great bedside manner and presence. I would highly recommend her to others.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
I would advise that you will not see Dr. Adams until the day of your retrieval. If you are wanting a doctor that is going to be there to do the ultrasounds and talk with you about findings then Dr. Adams is not the doctor for you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
I always felt like I was treated like a human with the medical team. With the billing team maybe not so much. It did feel like I was a number and they were just trying to collect more money for the clinic.
Describe the protocols Shannel Adams used in your cycles at Kindbody - Portland and their degree of success.
For my most recent IVF cycle, I did a luteal phase stimulation. I started out with priming with growth hormone. I took Clomid (150 mg), Menopur 75 IU, Follistim (300 units) and growth hormone (25 CC) throughout the cycle. I started out with lower doses and when follicles did not respond the dosage was increased (Clomid 250 mg., Menopur 150 IU, Follistim 450 units and 25 CC growth hormone.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kindbody - Portland. (Assigned nurse: Taylor)
Taylor was always pleasant in her responses and thoroughly answered my question. My biggest frustration with her was when she said she called with results and left a message but no call came through nor was a voicemail received. This happened a couple of times during my recent cycle. When people are working from home or the office they should have a reliable phone service so they can reach patients. It is very hard to get a hold of someone on the medical team and to not be able to have the opportunity to ask questions via phone is frustrating.
In my case the last time this situation occurred, the message was to let me know that the cycle had been cancelled. It would have been nice for me to be able to speak to someone instead of having to read that through the portal.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Portland.
Strengths-the clinic itself is a warm, bright an inviting place. Dr. Adams is great!
Weaknesses-The front desk staff are not always the friendliest. Often a lot of turnover at the clinic with front desk and MA staff. The billing office is not good about responding to correspondence via the clinic's patient portal. It is often hard to get a hold of a financial navigator regarding cycle costs and payments.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland.
The cost for one retrieval and two transfers was around $20K. I spent another $5K in medications for the retrieval that Dr. Adams performed.
What specific things went wrong at Kindbody - Portland?
Failed to call with results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kindbody - Portland.
I would love to see this clinic functioning at a capacity where when a patient calls they don't have to leave a message just to schedule an appointment. It is challenging getting a hold of medical staff, even when you call the urgent line. I ran into this situation and I had to leave a message for a call back.
The billing office needs an overhaul. When you send a bill to a client when the cycle has already been paid for weeks prior, that's an issue. The billing office and financial navigators are also slow to respond to both voicemails and portal messages.
Dr.Adams was consistently annoyed by my questions...When explaining her plan for our care she never gave us options, it was just dictated without explanation...I don't think she knows anything about me even though I've been working with her clinic for over 6 months. When talking to me she'd say we'd do one thing for my protocol, then a nurse would email me and tell me there was a mistake and make a change to the protocol...Everytime I had questions or concerns, I was just told by nursing, "this is your doctors recommendation"...
making appointments [at Kindbody] was often done by someone at corporate office and they wouldn't tell me an appointment had been scheduled, so I'd keep trying to reach someone to make an appointment that had already been made...reaching someone would often take multiple attempts...There are two NPs that work at the clinic who did a majority of the scans and gave to face time. They were both very compassionate and great at answering my questions. If I could've only dealt with them, my experience would've been better...
How was your experience with Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
Dr. Adams is clearly a very intelligent doc. She seems more focused on her new clinics numbers than patients concerns and values. When explaining her plan for our care she never gave us options, it was just dictated without explanation. This happened with ICSI vs conventional insemination and one vs two embryo transfer. It wouldn't be until I got the contract that I realized how many options there were. Everytime I had questions or concerns, I was just told by nursing, "this is your doctors recommendation". She wouldn't take the time to explain or consider my concerns. I'm a healthcare professional and read research to help me understand this process and what to expect. She was always very dismissive and gave anecdotal responses when her car plan differed from what I was reading. Dr.Adams was consistently annoyed by my questions. After 4 losses, you have a lot of anxiety, her refusing to answer my questions made the process so much more stressful and really eroded my trust in her. It felt like she was taking my questions personally, instead of seeing it as my way of managing my anxiety- which I tried to explain. With my second egg retrieval, even though we had 7 embryos, only one made it to PGT, the others arrested. I asked her about this and she very bluntly blamed this on our decision to opt for conventional insemination even though we were very successful with this method the first round. I avoid talking to her at this point because it's more stressful than helpful and I typically leave the conversation feeling worse than I did going into it.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
If you're at the start of your journey this is a good clinic to start at. She's direct and eager for you to get pregnant. Also, if you just want a competent doctor to make all of the decisions for you, this could be a good fit. If you've experienced a lot of trauma and have been at this awhile and need a doctor to be able to explain in detail all of the options, her style is anxiety provoking.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
On numerous occasions Dr. Adams didn't appear to know my medical history. I would have to repeat information multiple times. I don't think she knows anything about me even though I've been working with her clinic for over 6 months. When talking to me she'd say we'd do one thing for my protocol, then a nurse would email me and tell me there was a mistake and make a change to the protocol.
Describe the protocols Shannel Adams used in your cycles at Kindbody - Portland and their degree of success.
The first egg retrieval used an antagonist protocol, using Follistim and Menopur. We got 9 mature eggs, and after PGT ended up with 3 great embryos. Because of my age, and us hoping for 2 babies, we were recommended to do a second egg retrieval. I don't recall much rational behind changing up the protocol other than hoping for better results, I thought the first retrieval went great. The second round was an agonist protocol. Very similar but added lupron. We got 11 mature eggs, 6 fertilized but only one made it to PGT stage.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Portland.
There are two NPs that work at the clinic who did a majority of the scans and gave to face time. They were both very compassionate and great at answering my questions. If I could've only dealt with them, my experience would've been better. I think I had a couple of nurse coordinators but I never saw them, they may have even worked out of state for all I know. They couldn't answer any of my questions and instead would relay Dr.Adams answers which were typically along the lines of, these are your doctors orders, with no further explanation.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Portland.
It's the only fertility clinic in SW Washington. So the location is very helpful in doing monitoring appointments as traffic to and from Portland, where all of the other fertility clinics are, can be horrendous. Because it's a new clinic, they offered a phenomenal introductory price for the first egg retrieval and embryo transfer. The second egg retrieval was also reasonably priced compared to other clinics in the area. These two factors are really the biggest reasons I would recommend them to someone starting to recieve fertility treatments. In the 9 months I have had contact with this clinic, they have had 3 different receptionists but a majority of the time they had none. This makes it hard to do simple things like pay bills and schedule appointments because you talk to their corporate office in Chicago.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland.
$3500 introductory pricing for the new clinic (I'm not sure if this is still offered) for 1 egg retrieval and one FET. Including monitoring but not drugs and genetic testing. $13000 for the second egg retrieval. They were also great at forwarding the prescriptions to another pharmacy for me to compare prices so I could get the best deal possible.
Describe Shannel Adams's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kindbody - Portland.
We did a single embryo transfer. It was never discussed with us as to why this was chosen. In reading the explanations given by other doctors to other patients, I think it's because the embryos were high quality.
What specific things went wrong at Kindbody - Portland?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kindbody - Portland.
For a clinic running without someone actually managing it, they're doing great. However they frequently needed prompting to follow up with things. For example, making appointments was often done by someone at corporate office and they wouldn't tell me an appointment had been scheduled, so I'd keep trying to reach someone to make an appointment that had already been made. Once you could reach someone, they were very helpful and could get things resolved quickly- but reaching someone would often take multiple attempts. For example, I wasn't getting the genetic results for my embryos in the timeline promised. I'd reach out to the clinic and they told me it was likely due to a holiday (that was after the date they gave for when to expect results). When I still hadn't recieved the results a week later, I messaged them pretty upset and frustrated. I'd called the genetic testing company they use multiple times but hadn't recieved a response. They finally helped me get it worked out- the testing company had somehow lost my consent paperwork. I just wish they'd followed up with the lab earlier, I don't think they ever would have if I hadn't pushed for it.
Dr. Adams does a very good job of explaining things...was very busy and while I saw her almost every visit was rushed at times... was always very kind, friendly, and outgoing...showed a lot of compassion during check ups or procedures...antagonist protocol with FSH, LH, and Gonadotropin...don't think my protocol was tailored closely enough for my higher risk and it led to OHSS
I am not a fan of the Kindbody model...feel like a number dealing with their processes...driven to sell you things that are not necessary. So many things are not handled at the clinic level and you must call someone else at Kindbody...front desk was always empty...seemed short-staffed, which was pretty normal at this time.
How was your experience with Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
Dr. Adams does a very good job of explaining things but sometimes it sounds like a rehearsed speech which she has given many times. While I was at the clinic Dr. Adams was very busy and while I saw her almost every visit was rushed at times. Dr. Adams was always very kind, friendly, and outgoing. She always showed a lot of compassion during check ups or procedures.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
If you ask questions Dr. Adams will take the time to answer them fully. Come prepared with questions or treatment options and Dr. Adams will review them with you. If you don't ask for the time Dr. Adams seemed so busy she would easily move on to her next appointment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland?
Dr. Adams takes that time to talk to you and is very personable and friendly. She is passionate about what she does and takes the time to explain things although at times it sounds like a well rehearsed speech and not personalized.
Describe the protocols Shannel Adams used in your cycles at Kindbody - Portland and their degree of success.
I used a standard antagonist protocol with FSH, LH, and Gonadotropin. I also used human growth hormone to help with eqq quality. I used a dual trigger. Due to a large number of follicles, I was at higher risk for OHSS which I did develop a mild case of. I don't think my protocol was tailored closely enough for my higher risk and it led to OHSS. I had a large number of eggs retrieved but only 1 embryo made it to day 5 which is very uncommon and Dr. Adams was openly surprised by my results. She even checked with the lab to make sure there were no issues during embryo development.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Portland.
The nursing staff were friendly and helpful. You don't have one nurse managing your care so sometimes it takes a minute while they get up to speed. They liked to provide lengthy directions about protocol over the phone and wouldn't always follow up with all the details in email which was challenging. The nurse helping with the egg retrieval is the kindest person ever! The phlebotomist was also great.

Dr. Adams is very patient and willing to go over sensitive information as many times as you need to understand. She works with you collaboratively to decide next steps...very warm and positive. She is able to communicate clearly and effectively. I appreciate how willing she was to discuss options and why she thinks they may or may not be appropriate. She is a capable and confident physician without being alienating or ever talking down to you.
The clinics [Kindbody - Portland] phone system is confusing, but if you leave a voicemail before 3pm you will usually get a call back the same day. Front desk staff is very helpful and kind. The clinic online platform is frustrating in that it makes it difficult to find old conversation threads...office have been willing to listen to all our questions and hypothesis and explore them...Costs with kindbody were very clear and reasonable.

Describe the protocols Shannel Adams used in your cycles at Kindbody - Portland and their degree of success.
We came into Dr. Adams clinic having completed 5 cycles of IUI with Kaiser. Kaiser was nice because it was covered on insurance, but really felt like we were on a checklist and when we made it through the checklist they weren’t willing to do more testing or try any alternatives. From the beginning, Dr. Adams and her office have been willing to listen to all our questions and hypothesis and explore them.
We started at kindbody with some further testing and when things came back normal we tried one last IUI cycle - with letrozole, monitoring, trigger shot, and progesterone supplementation.
Unfortunately, that cycle wasn’t successful and we moved forward with IVF and a retrieval cycle. We primed with birth control for 3 weeks and went into the retrieval cycle. It went pretty smoothly - my doses of medication only changed for the last dose. The retrieval procedure went well and recovery was much better than I was anticipating.
We decided to try for a fresh transfer with one of our good graded untested embryos. It was unsuccessful and we were crushed.
We moved forward with a frozen embryo transfer cycle, again with 3 weeks of birth control priming. The pre- and post- transfer meds were very similar to the 1st transfer. The cycle was unsuccessful.
Very frustrated, we brainstormed with Dr. Adams and decided on a mock cycle to test for silent endometriosis, receptivity, and chronic endometritis. Everything came back normal. We also decided to thaw our frozen embryos and do PGTA testing.
Moving forward with our most recent cycle we added in some additional medications to the premeds (enoxaparin, prednisone, famotidine) and changed the progesterone injectable we used due to me developing an allergy with the last transfer.
We got our first ever positive pregnancy test, but the Hcg level was low - very low. Dr. Adams and her team were diligent about communicating with me about more labs, and following up with a scan. We were able to confirm that I didn’t have an ectopic pregnancy, or a viable pregnancy.
It’s been a long hard journey. One, we are still walking on. We are so glad to be able to trust in our doctor and be able to communicate clearly with them.

The clinics phone system is confusing, but if you leave a voicemail before 3pm you will usually get a call back the same day. Front desk staff is very helpful and kind. The clinic online platform is frustrating in that it makes it difficult to find old conversation threads and only shows medication doses for three days at a time which can be frustrating when trying to assess if you need to order more medication.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shannel Adams at Kindbody - Portland.
Costs with kindbody were very clear and reasonable. Costs with other clinics in the area are much harder to find and much higher.
Dr. Adams is the rare combination of intelligence and warmth I seek in a doctor. It's hard to find! One thing that's stuck out to me is when I came in for bloodwork and got very anxious trying to remember if I had genetic testing previously, she saw me (I wasn't even supposed to see her this visit) and came out and reassured me, touching my back. It was such a simple but very profound, empathetic gesture.
I like the intimate, clean feel of the [Vios Fertility Institute] clinic building. I think being a somewhat new clinic and the recent merger have made it a little more challenging to get a quick response at times, but the overall treatment is incredible and led by the incomparable Dr. Adams, whom I love...I felt immediately at ease and have been treated warmly and kindly.
