Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Kalan is a very empathetic and caring provider...called us from his home when our first transfer ended in miscarriage and was incredibly thorough at the Why Transfer Failed appointment...he advocated for me as a recurrent loss patient and I was able to receive more testing quickly which changed the next protocol...He immediately changed the course of action for our next transfer and it resulted in a beautiful baby boy...ended with 33 eggs, 16 fertilized and 7 PGT healthy embryos...
[Los Angeles Reproductive Center] was clean and organized and very quick to schedule appointments, which I appreciate. They talk to you as if they remember you (even though they probably don't) and it makes you feel good...Overall the nursing staff was all wonderful. They were very quick to respond via email, which is my preferred method of communication. Our primary nurse changed halfway through but care felt exactly the same and no one missed a beat!
How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan is a very empathetic and caring provider. He made my husband and I feel like we were all friends and that we were the only people in his care. He called us from his home when our first transfer ended in miscarriage and was incredibly thorough at the Why Transfer Failed appointment. He spoke as if this effected him as much as it effected us. He immediately changed the course of action for our next transfer and it resulted in a beautiful baby boy. He connected with us after his birth (long after we were out of his care) and his excitement for us was apparent. He always made me feel comfortable with every step and has an incredible bedside manner.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
He does speak very quickly, so be ready to take notes, but also don't be nervous to stop him to ask questions or to repeat himself.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan spoke to my husband and I like we were long term friends. It was incredibly compassionate, specific to us. He made us feel very comfortable and his empathy was very present in our conversations.
Describe the protocols Marc Kalan used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
The egg retrieval was very straight forward and traditional. I do recall the day I was supposed to trigger he added a week, but he was right because I ended with 33 eggs, 16 fertilized and 7 PGT healthy embryos. The first transfer was also traditional with estrace and PIO. After the chemical pregnancy he advocated for me as a recurrent loss patient and I was able to receive more testing quickly which changed the next protocol to progesterone suppositories and staying on Midrol until 6 weeks pregnant. These changes ended in a successful live birth.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Overall the nursing staff was all wonderful. They were very quick to respond via email, which is my preferred method of communication. Our primary nurse changed halfway through but care felt exactly the same and no one missed a beat!
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
I appreciate that the clinic had a satellite clinic close to where I lived. I only had to travel to the main clinic for procedures and an appointment here and there. The clinic was clean and organized and very quick to schedule appointments, which I appreciate. They talk to you as if they remember you (even though they probably don't) and it makes you feel good.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Each ultrasound outside of a retrieval or transfer cycle was $250. Sonohistogram was $500. Endometrial Biopsy was $800. Retreival (anethesia, ICSI, PGS for 8 embryos)= 14,000 Transfer was $5000 (we did two)

He [Dr. Marc Kalan] was very compassionate in giving information and took time to answer the many questions I would bring into our appointments. He was candid about options and didn’t take unnecessary risks or steps unless he felt they were warranted...Dr Kalan felt that multiple embryo transfers posed more of a risk, ask pregnancies with multiples and ivf have been viewed as higher risk...After the transfer failed we did go ahead with the procedure and have had success each time since then as well as a diagnosis that we didn’t have before.
At times the [Los Angeles Reproductive Center] clinic did not seem to be organized when I first started going there, some of that challenge was that because they are based out of Encino and Dr Kalan commutes 1 day a week I didn’t interact in person much with the clinic staff. When we did the third transfer I realized it was better for me to call them and advocate for myself and not wait on them to call me for things. Their business/financial department is also not on top of things until recently.
How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
When we first arrived to our visit we did not know that our only option would be IVF until after we received test results. He was very compassionate in giving information and took time to answer the many questions I would bring into our appointments. He was candid about options and didn’t take unnecessary risks or steps unless he felt they were warranted. For example, he gave a choice of doing a laparoscopic hysteroscopy prior to my first transfer due to a potential blocked tube. It was an expensive procedure and would have delayed the transfer, so didn’t push to do it as the information at the time didn’t deem it necessary. After the transfer failed we did go ahead with the procedure and have had success each time since then as well as a diagnosis that we didn’t have before.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Bring in questions you have and advocate for yourself.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan always seemed genuinely interested in my life outside of our visits. We connected about swimming and water polo, and talked about other life experiences.
Describe the protocols Marc Kalan used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Dr Kalan took into account my estrogen and hormone levels when giving medications. I never felt overly hormonal or very off as other women described due to the varying hormone injections or pills. I do recall that the progesterone shots that were in sesame oil gave me a reaction and the office was good about switching them to the ethyl oleate kind.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
The nurses at their clinic in Encino were nice, but I never had one that I spoke with the most. I do remember them being very nice before and after procedures though.

Their business/financial department is also not on top of things until recently.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
A retrieval cycle with 1 transfer was around $20,000 (in 2019). Meds for this were around $4,000-5,000. A single transfer around $4,000. Meds for single transfer were around $1,500. Laparoscopic hysteroscopy was around $2,000. Yearly embryo storage is $700.
Describe Marc Kalan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Dr Kalan felt that multiple embryo transfers posed more of a risk, ask pregnancies with multiples and ivf have been viewed as higher risk. I was fine with just transferring a single embryo each time.

How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan was charming and always tried to make us feel comfortable and that we were in good hands. A very kind person. He was always calm and often liked to make visits light and enjoyable. However, he was pretty disorganized and the visits would be short and rushed. When answering questions, he would often provide pretty quick answers and a "no worries" approach. He was trying to get to the next patient. He would also not reply to every email/message and seemed under water. His practice needed a monitored patient portal vs just generic email that got buried and ignored. Most importantly, he brushed aside suspected endometriosis when he found endometrial fluid during an egg retrieval. When I asked if I could have this condition, he scoffed, "No! You don't have heavy periods. You don't have endometriosis!" The following transfer I miscarried, again, and he was going to continue sticking in embryos. Fast forward to the future, and turns out I have stage 3/4 endometriosis confirmed via laparoscopy. That is sloppy and scary medicine and it's hard to trust a doctor who is dismissive like that, as nice as he was.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
If you suspect you have any kind of complex fertility issue, move on and find another doctor. He was not willing to do all the necessary testing to find out what was causing me to have recurrent losses.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan had a very kind demeanor and a warm bedside manner, but had a hard time keeping track of his patient volume so he would often forget where I was in the cycle process or why I was visiting him. He would confuse me with other patients, which would be nerve wracking as you are going through such intensive and life-changing treatment.
Describe the protocols Marc Kalan used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Two egg retrievals, one natural cycle start and one with bcp priming to start. Both used lupron trigger shots. Two frozen embryo transfers. His standard basic protocol of estrogen and progesterone, 4 days of medrol. First one using oral estrogen and second transfer using estrogen patches. He did not add any kind of immune protocol for the second transfer, despite the first resulting in a chemical pregnancy. He did a hysteroscopy and an ERA following that chemical pregnancy.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
The nursing team was understaffed for the patient volume they had. They were nice and tried their best. Email was the way to communicate and it was not very organized.
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
LARC was nice in that it was small and personable, and your doctor does all of your ultrasounds. The wait times could be very long. The patient communication was only done on email and it wasn't monitored well, felt very disorganized. The lab/surgery center was upstairs so that was convenient, too.

Dr. Winkler is incredibly knowledgeable each time we meet/talk. When I had an implantation that was not successful, I researched all possibilities heavily before my follow up appointment with her and each course of action she offered were the exact ones I read about. She included rare/not common possibilities as well, and was transparent about the limits of pushing my body vs. the reward of possibly finding out more information- such as conducting tests for more rare disorders.
Strengths of the [Los Angeles Reproductive Center] clinic are location, which includes exams rooms, procedure rooms, meeting rooms, and more all in the same building. Being a nervous patient, I would love to be able to talk on the phone more, but understand that doctor and nurse’s time is precious and important for the in-person appointments. They are very responsive and quick over email!

Especially after a transfer that was not successful, we did extra endometrial tests, tests for more rare blood disorders, and more. She also adjusted my medication protocol for the second transfer (medication before, during, and after transfer.) It has been successful!
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Yang )
Yang is communicative, direct, and straightforward over email. Adding to that in person: she is kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable.

I also did a lot of research and she shared the same sentiments as what I found based on my age and history. She also left room for personal choice for myself and my partner, and always gave her expert opinion. A few times she consulted with her contemporary (in the same office) to ease our nerves.

How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Our experience with Dr. Kalan was nothing short of incredible. From our first meeting, there was something special about him that put us at ease. Pursuing IVF can be such a difficult journey, physically, emotionally, and financially, but Dr. Kalan’s confidence in his expertise and his emotional intelligence became two unwavering pillars that kept us afloat in obtaining pregnancy success with our third transfer.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Don't be afraid to ask him questions. He always takes his time in answering questions and makes sure you're clear on the process.

Describe the protocols Marc Kalan used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
While I don't remember the exact protocol, I do remember appreciating that Dr. Kalan was thoughtful in preventing OHSS during the egg retrieval process. I had a large number of eggs and he made sure to take that into consideration before/during/after retrieval. We also did ICSI and tested all embryos. In the end we had I think 19 PGS-tested "normal" embryos.

Describe Marc Kalan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
We transferred one embryo each on the first and second transfers and then on the third transferred two (and both stuck!). We completely agreed with Dr. Kalans rationale for this approach.

Dr. Winkler is totally open to complementary treatment which is very important to me...She's always looking for ways to optimize the protocol. She's also been incredibly helpful introducing us to surrogacy agencies and giving candid advice on how to find the right Gestational Carrier...I see her often enough that I can usually ask her my questions in person, but if we have further issues I set up a phone appointment (free of charge) or even text her (I try not to abuse this privilege).
[the LA Reproductive Center nurses are] competent, caring and straightforward. I do follow up when I haven't gotten answers to my questions before EOD, but someone always responds...You may have to wait for your appointment time. If you are trying for natural retrievals, you will require a lot of appointments and it's better to have a very flexible work situation. I have made it my full-time job and I politely follow up if I haven't gotten answers to urgent questions; the clinic always gets me an answer.
How was your experience with Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Winkler and her partner Dr. Mark Kalan sometimes alternate days in the office, but she makes all the decisions about my treatments in conjunction with input from me and my TCM doctor. Dr. Winkler is totally open to complementary treatment which is very important to me. I do have a diminished ovarian reserve so we figured out early on I would likely be a poor responder to stims, so she's willing to do cycles as naturally as I want (only drugs we use are Ganirelix antigen and Ovidrel trigger). She's always looking for ways to optimize the protocol. She's also been incredibly helpful introducing us to surrogacy agencies and giving candid advice on how to find the right Gestational Carrier. In fact, every agent we talked to is eager to work with her again because she has such a good reputation, which in our opinion is well-earned. I see her often enough that I can usually ask her my questions in person, but if we have further issues I set up a phone appointment (free of charge) or even text her (I try not to abuse this privilege).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Winkler is the least ego-centric fertility doctor I have ever encountered. If you have ideas about how to approach your treatment, she will discuss them in detail. Be proactive!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Winkler offers me genuine care and attention. Throughout the process, she always makes herself available for our questions and never rushes us. My case is unique; I've been undergoing unstimulated egg retrievals, to bank embryos one at a time, trying to find the rare normal ones. Most doctors won't bother with this type of case, but Dr. Winkler has been kind, patient, and open to treating me.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Ivanna Castillo)
Ivanna, Joana & Yang are the third-party coordinators I have worked with. They're competent, caring and straightforward. I do follow up when I haven't gotten answers to my questions before EOD, but someone always responds. Maribel & Maggie have also helped with my case, and Crystal before she moved clinics. Dora the phlebotomist is very sweet and skilled. The front desk staff Maria, Linda & Yajira are kind and easy to work with. In finance, Claudia is more businesslike; Lily is extremely personable and made it a point to correct a billing error in my favor.
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
You may have to wait for your appointment time. If you are trying for natural retrievals, you will require a lot of appointments and it's better to have a very flexible work situation. I have made it my full-time job and I politely follow up if I haven't gotten answers to urgent questions; the clinic always gets me an answer. Blood drawn before noon will yield results by 5. The two partners fill in for each other for ultrasounds and can even do procedures according to your primary doctor's specifications.

  • Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
The main thing that went wrong was not listed above. One time the anesthesiologist put me under before Dr. Winkler checked whether I'd ovulated by ultrasound and unfortunately the main follicles we were trying to retrieve from was already collapsed. I probably wouldn't have gone forward with the procedure since the secondary follicle was small. I expressed my grievance to Dr. Winkler by phone and she took my issue very seriously and put into place a system by which all personnel know not to administer anesthesia before the ultrasound has been performed. She referred to it as a matter of informed consent, so I knew she understood my side of it. Otherwise, there have been a couple times when the dosage referenced in my pre-procedure email was incorrect (but the Rx was fine) so I panicked but was able to confirm with the staff it was just a typo.

She [Dr. Winkler] has a warm bedside manner and seems to know you as an individual patient...She has good judgement and can communicate about the issues to navigate through each step of this tricky and emotional processes of fertility. She responded well when asking about different aspects that we researched and wanted to know more about. One of the great things is that she is accessible...
After extensive research we were drawn to this clinic [Los Angeles Reproductive Center] because it has incredible results for donor egg operations. It also has an intimate size allowing it to be experienced and large enough to be competent and have good facilities and systems, but not too big that you get lost as a patient...she [nurse Joana] managed the donor co-ordination for us and we travelled to this clinic. She was very responsive and clearly experienced at her job. She had good communication with the doctor...
How was your experience with Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
She is clearly very experienced and knowledgeable and passionate about her job. She has a warm bedside manner and seems to know you as an individual patient, despite obviously having many patients to see. She has good judgement and can communicate about the issues to navigate through each step of this tricky and emotional processes of fertility. She responded well when asking about different aspects that we researched and wanted to know more about. One of the great things is that she is accessible. I do think the best results will be achieved between patient and doctor if you are as informed as possible and use the time with her to get the value from her experience and judgement. This is always our approach anyway, and that's what we did. We can't fully say what it would be like if we turned up without knowing anything at all, but believe that she would be just as good in that situation because of her experience.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
She clearly has every intention to make your treatment work and your experience a good one. She is experienced and has a good bedside manner. If you do your part and be as informed as possible, your chances with her will likely be as good as you will find anywhere.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr Winkler and the clinic team kept a good standard of care, and she herself was responsive and had a good manner.
Describe the protocols Nurit Winkler used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
We were a standard donor egg retrieval and transfer process, using hormone replacement standard protocol. we did consider a few different protocols but went with the standard. It required the doctor to work with an outside donor on our behalf so the doctors manner and the clinics ability to manage this was important, with meds for her and timing co-ordination for us. We also travelled for this transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Joana)
We dealt a lot with Joana as she managed the donor co-ordination for us and we travelled to this clinic. She was very responsive and clearly experienced at her job. She had good communication with the doctor. Overall she was great. Again, we were the type of patient who was proactive and researched things and asked questions. This worked great with Joana and that's what I would recommend to patients. We can't say how it would have been had we known nothing about any of the processes and waited for her to organize everything.
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
After extensive research we were drawn to this clinic because it has incredible results for donor egg operations. It also has an intimate size allowing it to be experienced and large enough to be competent and have good facilities and systems, but not too big that you get lost as a patient. Dr Winkler was the other reason, as she had a great manner and is experienced, and I liked it that the Dr was running the clinic so that she really wanted to make it work, for our and her benefit. We met Dr Kalan once when Dr Winkler couldn't attend and he was supportive and good also. These reasons proved to be correct and overall the clinic was great. We had one not great experience with one of the supporting nursing staff who was not too friendly and rough with the blood taking sample. Mostly the other clinic team members were competent enough and friendly enough. our point of contact was mostly exclusively through the one nurse co-ordinator who was great. The finance lady was easy to communicate with and everything was smooth in that area.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Cost wise we felt this clinic was well priced for California and the results they get. I think we spent around 30,000 for donor retrieval and transfer etc, but they are up front with costs and can let you know if you get in touch with them. We were sensitive to this as we had a terrible experience with a top end clinic before coming here that claimed to be fantastic and just was not. We felt LARC was good value for money because you are getting good quality Drs and embryologist and lab, in LA.
Describe Nurit Winkler's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
she suggested single transfer and genetic testing before hand to increase chances

He [Dr. Kalan] never seemed to know where we were or who we were. He was always short on time, hard to reach, and it seemed like he had far too many patients on his roster...after months of shots, acupuncture, prayer and preparation we flew to LA during the pandemic for the transfer, where I asked him why he hadn’t performed the saline test he’d mentioned previously. “Whoops!” He said. Whoops? He’d forgotten. Thousands of dollars, travel, injections and stress and he’d forgotten a very basic part of this job. In doing the test that day he learned there was an obstruction in my uterus, so instead of doing the transfer, he said I now needed surgery...
have never seen a practice [Los Angeles Reproductive Center] that’s so disorganized, chaotic, and uncaring...we interfaced with his [Dr. Kalan's] staff, who never seemed to know where we where or *who* we were — after paying them upwards of $30k, they’d call me by the wrong name, and instruct me to come into the office when we’d literally spoken the day before about me being on the other coast...
How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Please, whatever you do, find a different practice — your fertility and ability to build a family is far too important. I’ve been to a lot of different fertility clinics (we’ve moved a lot, and dealt with years of fertility struggles) and have never seen a practice that’s so disorganized, chaotic, and uncaring — working with Dr. Marc Kalan was frustrating but more than that, heartbreaking. For months we worked to find an egg donor, after which we only got one embryo from 24 eggs, and the donor had such a bad experience she decided to never donate again. Trying to stay positive, I chalked that up to bad luck and circumstance. The pandemic hit and so we had to leave LA to go east, but Marc insisted he do the transfer back in LA. While we were gone we interfaced with his staff, who never seemed to know where we where or *who* we were — after paying them upwards of $30k, they’d call me by the wrong name, and instruct me to come into the office when we’d literally spoken the day before about me being on the other coast. It felt like I was interfacing with an Arby’s where they couldn’t get my order right — only this ain’t sandwiches, it’s my fertility. I should have stopped it there but I was trying to remain positive and trust Dr. Kalan. Finally, after months of shots, acupuncture, prayer and preparation we flew to LA during the pandemic for the transfer, where I asked him why he hadn’t performed the saline test he’d mentioned previously. “Whoops!” He said. Whoops? He’d forgotten. Thousands of dollars, travel, injections and stress and he’d forgotten a very basic part of this job. In doing the test that day he learned there was an obstruction in my uterus, so instead of doing the transfer, he said I now needed surgery. Terrified and sad, the next day we came in for a blood draw to prepare for the surgery and, upon arriving at hour hotel, got a call from his staff — they forgot to draw the right amount of blood. And that’s when I was done. Nothing — and I mean nothing — was done correctly at LARC. If they can’t do a basic blood draw, how can I let them put me under anesthesia? I flew home immediately and went to an OBGYN in my hometown… who told me there was no obstruction. So even that was incorrect. I had the embryo sent east and had a lovely experience at a different clinic. Dr. Kalan’s office refused to pay for travel, apologize, or take responsibility for any of their mistakes. Please, go elsewhere. I wish I had. I’ve had a miscarriage before — working with Dr. Marc Kalan was worse.

He never seemed to know where we were or who we were. He was always short on time, hard to reach, and it seemed like he had far too many patients on his roster.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Joana Vasile )
She never seemed to know where we were, forgot basic information we'd already shared -- she didn't even seem to read our emails. She rarely explained what was going on, and forgot to order tests. I was surprised to find out she had a nursing degree -- i thought she was a low-level assistant with how little she knew or cared.
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
It's hard to evaluate the overall clinic given how bad my experience was with the doctor and nurse -- based on how terrible that was, my review would be, don't go there. When mistakes were made, they never took responsibility for them. The only thing they were good at emailing about was money owed them -- that they were on top of. Nothing else.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
It was like $30k -- not cheap. And the same as a Beverly Hills clinic.
What specific things went wrong at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Failed to convey critical information
  • Lost or damaged samples
  • Canceled a cycle due to clinic error
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
They forgot to order tests that were critical, and we flew across the country for. I had to remind them. Then they forgot to order the correct bloodwork. They said i had a blockage in my uterus when I didn't. Literally every step of the process was rife with errors and mistakes.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Kalan is very gregarious and outgoing. He tries to call back and email back quickly....He tries to understand. However, he is frequently pre-occupied, causing him to not explain everything, particularly what will happen in the future. He seems too busy to explain things thoroughly ahead of time, causing him to have to explain after the fact or to correct his staff....We went through the standard injections/IVF treatment but stopped short of implantation due to COVID-19. Our eggs are frozen. Make sure the doctor checks his staff's ordering of medication to make sure you have enough of all the drugs you need.
Staff [at Los Angeles Reproductive Center] is friendly and the doctors seem highly knowledgeable....However, served by an ill-trained staff, the doctors seem too rushed to explain things clearly. This seems to echo other reviews: the doctors are kind and knowledgeable but the staff is not competent....Extremely poor communication. Very rushed. Frequently emailed late or not at all. Had to email her to get instructions, etc. Not clear in explaining results, i.e. telling how many eggs, embryos, we got, causing us to ask for clarification
How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan is knowledgeable and outgoing. He tries to understand. However, he is frequently pre-occupied, causing him to not explain everything, particularly what will happen in the future. He seems too busy to explain things thoroughly ahead of time, causing him to have to explain after the fact or to correct his staff. We liked his personality but his staff is horrible and he's too busy to overcome the mistakes his staff makes in real time.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Have him explain ahead of time what needs to be done, even it requires multiple, separate consults in person or by phone, so you know what to expect and how to prepare. Before each major stage, i.e. injections, retrieval, fertilization, implantation, make him explain what will happen and how to prepare.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Margarita Rodriguez)
Very few good things to say about her. Extremely poor communication. Very rushed. Frequently emailed late or not at all. Had to email her to get instructions, etc. Not clear in explaining results, i.e. telling how many eggs, embryos, we got, causing us to ask for clarification. She is not a bad person; she tries to be gregarious also. Perhaps she is too busy. But she made our experience unnecessarily stressful and confusing. Dr. Kalan is ill-served by her.
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Staff is friendly and the doctors seem highly knowledgeable. If this were a review of competency, we have confidence in their abilities as physicians. However, served by an ill-trained staff, the doctors seem too rushed to explain things clearly. This seems to echo other reviews: the doctors are kind and knowledgeable but the staff is not competent. This puts the doctors in the unfortunate position of having to do their staff's work by explaining clearly what the staff should have been able to explain clearly at the start. We consulted with two other doctors before Kalan. We liked Kalan the best but his staff was easily the least competent of the 3. He deserves better.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
We can't completely review billing yet. Through work, we have a fertility benefit and the benefit is doled out through a third party that is billed directly by Kalan's office. We've had some snafus so far but not seen the final billing so we reserve judgment. We can say one of the billing coordinators is much more helpful than the other in the office.
Describe Marc Kalan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
We have not implanted yet due to COVID-19.
What specific things went wrong at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to call with results
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Unclear conveyance of results multiple times, some drug order issues, failure to explain how to prepare for certain procedures ahead of time. All staff issues.

Dr. Winkler always takes the time to talk with me when I have questions and has a way of explaining things where she doesn't sway you one way or the other but just gives you the facts and lets you decide how you want to proceed...If I expressed concerns about money, she tried to find ways to help me save...she didn't really fill us in on what we needed to know until I asked questions later.
[Los Angeles Reproductive Center]Strengths: The clinic is very nice physically with nice waiting and patient rooms (also my husband liked the "sample" rooms...The clinic staff, nurses, and doctors are all friendly and knowledgeable. How was your experience with Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Winkler was very patient with any questions I had. During the first visit, we weren't really sure what to ask but after I did research and had more questions, she spent a good amount of time on the phone with me to answer every question I had. If I expressed concerns about money, she tried to find ways to help me save. She was always warm and comforting in the appointments and gave me the information I needed to decide if I wanted to move forward with the cycle (even though I only had five follicles to start with). Even with the bad news about our abnormal embryos, she gave us our options of how to move forward, what she would change, and the facts surrounding success rates and is letting us decide. Despite the negative outcome, I think Dr. Winkler and her team did everything right.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Do some research before going in for a consultation and have a list of questions ready. We didn't and she didn't really fill us in on what we needed to know until I asked questions later.

Describe the protocols Nurit Winkler used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Due to my age of 41, Dr. Winkler did a modified mini IVF protocol explaining that at my age with diminished ovarian reserve that it wasn't about quantity but about quality. Clomid-2 pills every day for 5 days Menopur-2 vials every day for 8 days Gonal F-every day for 8 days Omnitrope-every other day Cetritide- starting day 5 Lupron to trigger Novarel to trigger On day 11 of my cycle, we did the egg retrieval which resulted in 3 of 3 eggs retrieved. Of these, they informed me that one fertilized normally and one fertilized abnormally. However, on day 6, they informed me that two had grown into blastocysts. These were sent for testing and both were abnormal. Dr. Winkler explained that my eggs were of good quality for both of them to have grown to blastocysts but the quality of the egg doesn't mean that the embryo will be normal.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
The nurses were amazing. Always comforting and very thorough in their explanations. They sent emails with videos to further teach us how to do the injections and were always available by email for other questions.
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Strengths: The clinic is very nice physically with nice waiting and patient rooms (also my husband liked the "sample" rooms a lot better than the kaiser ones ;). Dr. Winkler has been willing to help me by completing the doctors portion of multiple grant applications on her own time. The clinic staff, nurses, and doctors are all friendly and knowledgeable. I had a positive experience and despite the negative outcome, I think they did everything right and everything they could. Weaknesses: Scheduling appointments that worked for me was pretty hard. They usually only gave me one, maybe two, options for appointments in person and over the phone so make sure that if you have a full time job, like me, that your boss understands that you may be taking sick time a lot during this. You do have to pay for valet parking in the building so bring cash along. I'd say the biggest weakness is that the traffic getting to the clinic is bad at most times of the day being located in Encino on Ventura Blvd so leave early so you aren't adding more stress to an already stressful situation. Also, it does seem that this clinic may be slightly more expensive than others so check your options.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Embryo banking option: $13,845 - included Ultrasounds, in cycle blood tests, intravenous set up, oocyte extraction, oocyte identification from follicular fluid, sperm capacitation/wash, culture of oocytes, fertilization of oocytes, embryo culture, embryo freezing and 1 year of storage, anesthesia, ICSI, PGS screening $150 - first Ultrasound $3,809 - medications $300 -fragmentation semen analysis $349 - Genetic testing for both partners

Write everything down - he [Dr. Marc Kalan] talks fast and sometimes I’d forget what he said so I was unable to follow up... is warm and energizing, yet also calming. He joked with me, was delicate when giving bad news and allowed us to ask billions of questions. He never rushed us out of the appointments and was a positive force...a last minute change was made to Lupron. Problem was a)already spent a billion dollars on 1st trigger that is not useless in my fridge. And b) the lupron was specialized and came from a compound pharmacy so we had to wait for the pharmacy to mix it and pay out of pocket. Md office told us it’d be ~$150 total but it was $450 total. The last minute change was because md was worried about hyper stimulating the ovaries.
[Los Angeles Reproductive Center is a] Small office, very little street parking (1-2hours max), valet parking everywhere else. I waited an hour after my appt time (1st appt after lunch, there were 6 others scheduled at the same time). Mostly friendly and warm staff, except the financial coordinator. She was very brash and cold...Julie [nurse] was kind, patient, helpful and easy to talk to. Some things I had to contact her multiple times about as she didn’t always follow up. We built an easy rapport. I wish she would have followed up at after my cycle as I could have used the support.

He [Dr. Kalan] was thorough and patient with us and explained things well. My only concern was he was vague about the particular situation I had in terms of his experience treating this condition and typical success rates and outcomes. He also forgot one important detail about my story during one conversation (recurrent miscarriage), and I feel like he could have been more thorough about what testing I need and could have explained that better.
Kind and available doctor and staff, professional environment and space, well coordinated and organized, weaknesses would be some vagueness around experience of doctor and success rates, also the possible outcomes of IVF ... They took a long time to send records to Different clinic, also unclear why fetus from a miscarriage couldn’t be tested, something we were really relying on for diagnostics and to understand our recurrent loss

He has been incredibly kind, considerate, available and attentive. He truly cares about you and your journey and wants the best for you. He is always accessible, including by text and will often check on you.... Dr Kalan tried IUI with chlomid as well as a trigger shot. He then tried IUI with some injectables to help me save money. When not successful, he encouraged IVF, which was his favored option from the start. I simply struggled with the cost. He also conducted various tests prior to treatment to ensure there were no complications.
They [Los Angeles Reproductive Ctr] are accommodating, available, comforting and communicative. Any time I needed to get in, or had a problem, they made time for me. They are also so warm and friendly and were always willing to chat with me.... I love all of them! They were helpful, friendly, available any time I had questions or needed help. They were extremely supportive and truly cared about my progress.

Clinic is very clean but its not very big. Financial coordinator [at Los Angeles Reproductive Center] was not helpful. You can hear everything if there is another patient next door. Other than the cleanliness, the clinic is unwelcoming...Nursing staff did not know the answers to simple questions such as the type of donor sperm to order. They scheduled everything too fast.
How was your experience with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan comes off as very personable. He explains everything, but its so fast and in no detail to fully understand the process. After we talked, I was handed off to a nurse at ever visit. Some visits, I did not speak to Dr. Kalan. All my questions were answered by a nurse. Dr. Kalan does make you feel comfortable during a procedure but his time with patients are very slim. He is a good person, but I would not go back to this clinic.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Make sure to do your own research as well. Know what youre dealing with because details may be left out or not thoroughly explained.

Describe the protocols Marc Kalan used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
I was quickly recommended to do a natural IUI with donor sperm. The process was fairly quick. Bloodwork was done the same day as the consult. Once I started my period, I was told to come in on day 7. HSG was scheduled and done. Donor sperm was selected but without bloodwork results back. Fortunately, my bloodwork came back and donor sperm was not affected by anything. I had only a few days to get the donor sperm delivered for insemination date. Everything was very fast, too fast. There were too many unknowns that seemed to be “okay” with the clinic. I felt like they just wanted my money.

When I read Dr winklers profile on her page, i thought this seems to good to be true. A doctor who individualizes treatment based on each patient, a doctor that believes in informed consent and that the patient is a vital part of the team? It wasnt too good to be true. Dr. Kalan always comes into the room knowing exactly where we are in the treatment and confidently walks me thru next steps. If I have questions, he answers them and I never feel rushed even though they are quite busy. My only regret is not going straight to IVF like he recommended...has the best bed side manner. I feel very comfortable in his care...He’s moving very fast because there are a lot of patients, but if you need more info - just ask and he will take the time to answer.

[Dr. Nurit Winkler] Can sometimes be hard to get a hold of. When I did talk to her, she gave me all the time I needed to understand everything. First egg retrieval was not successful so I had to get another donor and go back to square one. That was very expensive. Since the first donor hadn't donated before, there was no way to predict the outcome. I recommend going with a proven egg donor. I wish someone had told me that. It would have saved me a lot of time and money.

Every single visit I get to speak to Dr. Kalan. He does every scan and that is really helpful... I appreciate That he doesn’t run unnecessary tests and keeps the overall goal in mind. I’ve done some research on my own and when I bring it to him he always knows about it and tells me why we should or shouldn’t do it...You won’t be treated like a number with Dr. Kalan. Your specific case will be looked at and A personalized plan will be put in place
The clinic [at Los Angeles Reproductive Center- LA] is really beautiful with great views. It’s clean, organized as there’s never a long wait, which is really important to me. The front desk staff is very friendly...The nursing staff is great. There are a few main nurses that rotate in helping you but it’s nice because you get advice from all of them. You can also call anyone of them at any time for help. They also put up with me and help me do my shots when I panic or my husband is out of town.

Since I am older, I only have one ovary, and have endometriosis we went straight to IVF. The first round we got two normal embryos that were frozen and one was later and implanted but never got a heartbeat. After that we thought we would try IUI just to see what happened and it didn’t work. Then we did a bunch of testing including an ERA and then another egg retrieval and then planted a second egg that implanted but didn’t grow. Now we are going to try for a third egg retrieval and then we will try Lupron (to try and reduce the inflammation from the endo) before we implant the next embryo.

Dr. Kalan was always available for questions via email and text. When I was nervous about some cramping I had the night after an egg retrieval, he answered his phone at 11:00pm and discussed everything with me and was a huge comfort. He had wonderful emotional intelligence and when we had a setback after our first retrieval...For the second retrieval, Dr. Kalan added testosterone priming and HGH, and we ended up with 9 embryos--6 of which were genetically normal. I am pregnant after the first transfer.
Dr. Kalan as well as his partner, Dr.Winkler, and his whole staff [at Los Angeles Reproductive Center], including his nurses Maggie, Maribel, and Julie, were kind, considerate, and dedicated. The care was far more personal than we received at a larger clinic in mid city/Beverly Hills area. I felt truly cared for...Maggie wrote me a sweet email when I told her I was feeling down--she truly cares and was rooting for us always! I will miss her and the other nurses!

When I was nervous about some cramping I had the night after an egg retrieval, he answered his phone at 11:00pm and discussed everything with me and was a huge comfort. He had wonderful emotional intelligence and when we had a setback after our first retrieval, he provided emotional support. He also had excellent ideas for multiple ways to improve our odds, and we had fantastic results for the second retrieval. We switched fertility doctors specifically because our prior was a terrible communicator. I am so glad we switched to Dr. Kalan, who was able to explain everything to us with compassion and patience throughout the experience. He made the egg retrievals as stress free as possible and I felt very safe. He made the transfer experience truly a special experience.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
You've found the perfect physician and guide for this difficult life experience! His partner, Dr.Winkler, is also absolutely wonderful. His nurses are extremely helpful and responsive. You will be in great hands at this clinic.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Marc Kalan at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Kalan as well as his partner, Dr.Winkler, and his whole staff, including his nurses Maggie, Maribel, and Julie, were kind, considerate, and dedicated. The care was far more personal than we received at a larger clinic in mid city/Beverly Hills area. I felt truly cared for.
Describe the protocols Marc Kalan used in your cycles at Los Angeles Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
We had a fairly standard protocol for our first egg retrieval, but we did not make many embryos. For the second retrieval, Dr. Kalan added testosterone priming and HGH, and we ended up with 9 embryos--6 of which were genetically normal. I am pregnant after the first transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Los Angeles Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Margarita Rodriguez)
Maggie was very responsive and compassionate. The nursing staff responded to emails every afternoon and were excellent at sending in lab slips or medications as needed. It was always the correct amount. Maggie taught us how to do the injections and always told us not to hesitate to call if we got confused. Maggie wrote me a sweet email when I told her I was feeling down--she truly cares and was rooting for us always! I will miss her and the other nurses!
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
Organized, very clean, and with good COVID sanitation protocols. There is a great view from the waiting room. The woman who did finances was also very kind and a great communicator. I really don't have any complaints.
Describe Marc Kalan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
I only wanted to transfer one so this was not discussed.

Dr Kalan made me and my husband feel confident and comfortable. He was very reassuring and we trusted him completely. We never felt rushed when we went to see him and he took the time to explain everything to us in terms we would understand...I had an ultrasound every 2-3 days and was closely monitored...He recommends single [embryo transfer], but ultimately it is the couples decision. He takes the time to explain risks and makes sure you understand before moving forward
15345 for egg retrieval, icsi, pgs testing [at Los Angeles Reproductive Center]...Whole clinic is great and everyone is so helpful. From the front desk to the billing department to the nurses taking blood, they are amazing. We always felt comfortable and we never had to wait long for our appointment. Only downside is the valet parking and no validation!...I must’ve sent a thousand emails and called with so many questions during my cycle and each concern was always addressed right away.

Dr Winkler is the most compassionate physician I met. She will always call/ email communicate in a timely manner. She is very knowledgeable and explains every steps in details and make sure to guide us to the best possible treatment plan ... First cycle - regular FSH cycle (with added menopour and antagonist) 30 eggs retrieved- 1 embryo - chemical pregnancy Second cycle - flare protocol 24 eggs retrieved- 4 embryos- chemical pregnancy
Both clinical and admin staff [LARC] are lack of professionalism and basic knowledge (and it is seems that they don’t really care). Manager will never say hello or greet us. Financial once threatened to cancel our cycle (as my husband was out of the country and we said we will send the payment the next day). ...They are not tech savvy, although they both young physicians, so don’t be surprised if your blood work report are not uploaded to your chart or that the staff didn’t update your treatment protocol. ...

Lack of clinical understanding and not compassionate
Describe your experience with Los Angeles Reproductive Center.
The doctor is amazing! The staff is not so much. Financial team have zero compassion and nurses are lack clinical knowledge (and patient care). They are not tech savvy, although they both young physicians, so don’t be surprised if your blood work report are not uploaded to your chart or that the staff didn’t update your treatment protocol. Luckily the doctor is on top of everything regarding her patients. I would still recommend strongly to go.

Dr. Winkler was warm and caring. She listened to our unusual circumstance and financial situation. She listened to questions about Natural IVF to Mini IVF to regular IVF and talked them through with us in our situation. ... In our first consultation she also recommended my partner take the genetics testing since I had already and was a carrier for 1 vulnerability.
The Clinic [Los Angeles Repro Ctr] was in a high rise building and the view was beautiful. The office is VERY clean and comfortable. ... I absolutely loved they had more "natural" options although we decided what was best was regular IVF. I like having the option of not getting on BC and having the DR follow MY cycle instead of my cycle being manipulated to try to fit into the Doctors schedule, like other clinics.
How was your experience with Nurit Winkler at Los Angeles Reproductive Center?
Dr. Winkler was warm, caring, informative, very patient with us and understanding of our desires and obstacles. She spoke with us in detail about the pro's and Con's of natural IVF, Mini IVF and regular IVF with our unique situation. In our first consultation she also recommended my partner take the genetics testing since I had already and was a carrier for 1 vulnerability. We agreed and she arranged and set it up as soon as we walked out of her office. We didn't feel like we were inconveniencing anyone and that everyone was there for just us lol. We cannot wait to continue working with Dr. Winkler.

Dr. Winkler was warm and caring. She listened to our unusual circumstance and financial situation. She listened to questions about Natural IVF to Mini IVF to regular IVF and talked them through with us in our situation. She also told me her clinic does the surgery for egg retrieval every day to follow the females cycle. She gave options financially and her professional opinion about what what process would work best for us. We couldn't be happier we found her.
