This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr. Shenoy is excellent. She helped us navigate through a process that was both physically and mentally very challenging. She understood, acknowledged, and adjusted care based on the mental impacts of the process which was much appreciated. She encouraged us to push forward several times when weren't sure and she was right in doing so
The [Mayo Clinic] team works very well together. They support one another and work together seamlessly. They all knew what was going on with my case and were able to make recommendations on next steps right away without back and forth, even in more urgent situations...I absolutely love the nurse that was there at my retrieval. She was such a positive force and blessing to have present.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Shenoy is excellent. She helped us navigate through a process that was both physically and mentally very challenging. She understood, acknowledged, and adjusted care based on the mental impacts of the process which was much appreciated. She encouraged us to push forward several times when weren't sure and she was right in doing so. She didn't always just provide the answers we wanted to hear which is a sign of a great doctor. We met with several other providers prior and they were all willing to do whatever we wanted. Dr. Shenoy and team listened to our goals and gently pushed us in the direction that they know would allow us to best achieve them rather than just allowing us to make a decision based on our initial comfort levels which would not have led to the best outcomes.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Shenoy is a bit more on the quiet side. If you have questions, ask them. She will have or find the answers for you. Share how you are feeling with her and she will help you to make the best decisions for you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
All experiences with Dr. Shenoy and team were very customized and thoughtful. The whole team showed great empathy, went to great lengths to answer all questions, and were extremely focused on our comfort as we were extremely nervous throughout the entire process. The initial process of identifying outside monitoring and the standard process during the start of the cycle were more hands off so felt a bit more like a number - but when any needs arose during this time the team was 1,000% ready to help.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
Started with standard birth control. I think my body may have overreacted to the medication based on my side effects and it seemed like I started the cycle overly suppressed (but that's my thought/ opinion). Was on mid-range doses for standard IVF. My Gonal-F stayed the same but Menopur was doubled around mid-cycle. I responded slowly at first and the cycle was longer than I expected - because I'm usually always very sensitive to medications. In the end my e2 levels looked good (around 3,600 at trigger) but only had 5 measurable follicles. Lupron trigger which may not have worked based on the bloodwork the next day so I freaked out that we'd have to cancel at the last minute. The team reassured me that it was OK and we did a second HCG trigger ASAP the day prior. Day of retrieval 22 eggs were retrieved which was a big surprise. 20 were mature, 17 fertilized, 16 made it to day 3, 12 were graded A or B on day 5 and were frozen. 4 PGT-A normal.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
Because I had to undergo outside monitoring and I didn't have a designated nursing contact the start of the process was a bit hectic. The team was very responsive in general, but a few times in situations where turnaround were urgent I became really nervous about getting responses in time.
That said, the team was incredibly caring, compassionate, and well organized. I absolutely love the nurse that was there at my retrieval. She was such a positive force and blessing to have present.

Describe Chandra Shenoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Single embryo transfer is generally recommended and required for surrogacy with PGT-A normal embryos
What specific things went wrong at Mayo Clinic?
Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Mayo Clinic.
I wouldn't define the situation as things going wrong at the clinic, but there was some room for improvement in my medication plan. I am very sensitive to medications and an existing medicine that I take had an interaction with the birth control needed at the start. It caused significant symptoms which required my physician outside of the fertility clinic to need to adjust my medication. Once the situation was realized and understood, a fix was put into place quickly but the process to get to the point of understanding was a bit nerve wracking. It was a unique situation though - not an everyday situation.
She [Dr. Shenoy] tended to provide as little information as was necessary, while I repeatedly said that I need to understand the entire process and know the details. I often had to ask questions to seek clarification, gain new information, and better understand the reasons behind treatment decisions. I had a difficult experience with a saline sonogram where she and team attempted to check for uterine polyps. They had difficulty completing the procedure and viewing the uterus, and I left feeling unconfident and uncomfortable. Dr. Shenoy is a capable doctor and did respond to all of my questions in person or through the online portal. She completed all medical tasks needed; however, she did not go above and beyond to make me feel cared about.
Very one size fits all treatment [at Mayo Clinic]. Rotation between different doctors. Some doctors had amazing bedside manner. All of the doctors are very knowledgeable. Everything is done online via the portal. Pregnancy results are sent via the portal and no personal phone call is made until the next day...I was repeatedly told what they do for the IVF process in a very one size fits all manner...As I am diagnosed with unexplained infertility, I often had questions aimed at digging deeper into why my body was performing a certain way. These questions/concerns were not looked into further besides telling me what their protocol typically is.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Shenoy is very knowledgeable and could readily explain best practice. She attempted warmth with smiles. Besides smiling, she demonstrated a reserved, slightly cold personality. She tended to provide as little information as was necessary, while I repeatedly said that I need to understand the entire process and know the details. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Make sure you ask lots of questions and advocate for yourself. She is very knowledgeable and capable, but your personality might not mesh with hers.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
There was very little personalization in care. At Mayo Clinic, the doctors rotate care so you may get a different doctor depending on the day. I was repeatedly told what they do for the IVF process in a very one size fits all manner. Under her care, nurses sent impersonal online portal messages. As I am diagnosed with unexplained infertility, I often had questions aimed at digging deeper into why my body was performing a certain way. These questions/concerns were not looked into further besides telling me what their protocol typically is.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
I was given the standard Mayo Clinic REI department protocol.
Due to my age below 35, I was told they only transfer 1 embryo at a time as a precaution to prevent the risk of twins.
I began with birth control pills which I had been on for months due to issues with cysts.
I was on Gonal F (225) Menopur (150) for 10 stim days. I had 2 monitoring ultrasounds because after the first one, my follicles took an extra day or two to mature, so a follow up was needed. No other blood work was done throughout the cycle. I took Cetrotide one day, and after was the trigger (hcg 10,000). Bloodwork was completed on day 4, 6, and 8. After the first and second blood tests my doses were increased due to slower response.
My retrieval was two days after the trigger in the morning.
18 eggs, 13 mature, 6 fertilized, and 1 was blastocyst embryo by the time of transfer.
I had a fresh embryo transfer five days later. 2 additional embryos became blastocyst and were frozen that day/evening.
My transfer failed.
A second embryo from that retrieval was transferred 3 months later using the FET protocol. The transfer was done with a different doctor at Mayo, but that embryo also did not implant and it failed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
Nurses are limited to the level of communication they provide due to the online portal limitations. Some nurses were far better communicators than others. I noticed several errors in the online communications that were due to clerical typing issues. Additionally, I had one difficult experience that was due to a mix up behind the scenes. When I needed a follow up ultrasound due to fluid on my uterine lining during an FET and was told to call and schedule the ultrasound, I called the front desk to set it up, but they said no orders for an ultrasound had been placed. So, the appointment desk left a message with the nursing team regarding this matter. In response a few hours later, I received a short message from nurse staff stating that if I’d like to schedule an ultrasound, please contact appointment desk (which I had already done). Once that was sorted out, I was able to schedule an appointment. I attend that appointment in a later week, and the ultrasound tech began the process for a follicle assessment. I had to tell the employee that I was not being seen for a follicle count as I was in the middle of an FET cycle. I had to explain to her that this appointment was supposed to be a follow up to check for fluid on my lining. The tech apologized and said that the order was made for a follicle assessment. Since I caught the mistake, the correct pictures were taken, but I left that appointment feeling very upset that someone behind the scenes put in the wrong order.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Mayo Clinic.
Ultrasound monitoring was run like a well oiled machine, but you had to call and schedule your own appointment within the time frame allowed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
Retrieval with fresh transfer was $15,000.
Frozen Embryo Transfer was approximately $5,500.
Describe Chandra Shenoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Doctors at Mayo strongly recommend one embryo at a time.
She [Dr. Shenoy] seems to be a nice doctor but seems to be distanced. She didn't do my egg retrieval. They said they work in team and whoever on call will do my egg retrieval or embryo transfer. So while Dr. Shenoy is assigned as my primary care doctor, other doctors did different procedures (e.g., mock embryo transfer, egg retrieval, ultrasound 36 hours before egg retrieval)...
They [nurses at Mayo Clinic] are prompt with communicating with me via Mayo patient portals...Mayo may be a great health care system known internationally but not sure about their Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility area. How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
This is my first time working with Dr. Shenoy, started my IVF with Mayo's REI in January 2022. She seems to be a nice doctor but seems to be distanced. She didn't do my egg retrieval. They said they work in team and whoever on call will do my egg retrieval or embryo transfer. So while Dr. Shenoy is assigned as my primary care doctor, other doctors did different procedures (e.g., mock embryo transfer, egg retrieval, ultrasound 36 hours before egg retrieval). I met/talked with Dr. Shenoy a few times; my first appointment inquiring about IVF, my IVF orientation, and when she called me to inform me about that 3 out of 4 eggs are abnormal. She sounded more compassionate at that time. I feel as if I don't get a lot education from them. It feels like IVF support groups on FB provide me more information, support than Dr. Shenoy and Mayo REI folks...
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
I am not sure... I am still deciding about the care that I am receiving including the competence of the clinic. They don't even have any success rates when I asked...

They had me injected Gonal F 300IU, Menopur 150 unit for 10 days, adding Ganirelix 250 mcg on the 5th day, and stopped all and had me injected HCG a day before my egg retrieval. My Estradiol was 895 on two days before the egg retrieval. They couldn't visualize my right ovary so they only retrieved 4 eggs from my left ovary. The first/last time they saw both ovaries was August 2021 at that time they counted 33 follicles. But since then all the ultrasound technicians including the resident at Mayo Rochester who did my last ultrasound on 2 days before my egg retrieval said they can't see my right ovaries. They attributed that to bowel gas or that the right ovary is shrinking. Not a lot explanation or not enough effort (to me) to visualize my right ovary. Or anything else that I can do to improve the outcomes.

$25000 ($18600 for Freeze all IVF) and $6000 plus all other ultrasound, blood test, mock embryo transfer, etc appointments
Describe Chandra Shenoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Dr Khan is very good at sharing the real numbers, what our chances are at our age and what we could hope for. He was very personal and took time to build report and trust. We have the ability to ask questions through our medical portal and we get a response within 12 hours. The biggest thing is I felt comfortable being able to talk with Dr. Khan and he made time to answer every question we had.
They [Mayo Clinic] are a learning hospital so I have fellows or learners at every appointment, and they have medical teams who take turn covering care - so you may not know the doctor who will do your retrieval or transfer depending on when it is done...The clinic is very well run. You always have access to ask questions or to contact someone...they will only transfer one Embryo if PTGA tested. They will transfer 2 embryos if not tested. They do like to do a fresh transfer and then test the other embryos.

They took the time to hear my story - and every staff person I saw after know our story and what we were hopeful for. They were honest with us and our chances, yet still provided us hope.
Describe the protocols Zaraq Khan used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
Suppressed my cycle for 4 weeks with regular birth control pills. I did have a large cist on my ovary that he was able to drain 2 days before starting the stimulation medicine. I am on 300 IU Follstem/Gonal-F and 150IU Menopur. We are mid cycle so we do not have results yet.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Mayo Clinic. (Assigned nurse: Maria)
Everyone knows our story and knows what our care plan is before they see us. they take time to answer our questions and none of our questions are deemed silly. I just feel cared for by everyone. That I matter. That I am a person and my questions are valid.

Everything is billed individually. We made an initial payment of 18,600 for an egg retrieval. the Transfer is 5,00

they will only transfer one Embryo if PTGA tested. They will transfer 2 embryos if not tested. They also will do a rescue transfer if the embryos are not doing well in the lab on day 3.
Come with questions and research- he [Dr. Zaraq Khan] will eagerly engage you on this...Very intelligent, references data a lot but also acknowledges the amount of things we don't have a good answer to. Was happy to discuss my case with colleagues and change his initial opinion if warranted. Extremely personable and talented...Very individualized counseling, lots of personal anecdotes and felt like my treatment was tailored to me...Dr Khan is very comfortable with multiple embryo transfer in my age group (40-41). He is not a huge advocate for PGT in my case, but very open to it if i want it. I assume we would do eSET of a tested euploid embryo
It [Mayo Clinic] is a small office. Can be a long wait in the office for appointments, ultrasounds, but once you are in for care things are very efficient. The business office does not always explain things super clearly so make sure you ask for very good explanations...Haven’t had any great individual nursing interactions- they function as a large team and you don’t get to develop a rapport or relationship with them. They are very responsive on the patient portal, but virtually impossible to get a hold of on the phone. despite the lack of personalized attention, I have never had any complaints or concerns about the nurses quality of care.

I have age-related fertility challenges and DOR. I actually did freeze my eggs at another clinic in my mid-30s but unfortunately none of those were able to be successful upon thawing. I have tried high dose antagonist cycle with luteal estrace priming, and got okay results but not amazing number of eggs. Did cleavage stage fresh transfer of 2 embryos (BFN). Next, we switched to a mini-stim protocol, as he thought we could potentially get similar egg numbers but possibly higher quality with way less meds.

Dr. Shenoy was very accepting and knowledgeable. We only met her twice and met more with the NPs and Fellows who worked with her, but our pregnancy journey was fairly short because my wife got pregnant on the second IUI. She explained different ways we could go about getting pregnant but didn't need to do anything other than IUI...It's always a little scary to be an LGBT couple not knowing what to expect but she was easy to work with.
The [Mayo Clinic] staff was great to work with. Just know that you may not see the same people every time. The nurses were the ones who performed the implantation, unless they couldn't then the fellow came in to assist...The reason we chose Dr. Shenoy was because she went on Instagram and talked about reproductive choices specifically for LGBTQ patients. Expect to do a lot of testing before even trying to get pregnant. We had a lot of testing including genetic testing, lab work, and seeing a psychologist. From the first meeting with her to the first treatment of IUI it was about 3 months.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
She took our concerns into place and was honest with us. It's always a little scary to be an LGBT couple not knowing what to expect but she was easy to work with.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
My wife's testing looked good, so Dr. Shenoy recommended starting IUI. She recommended 3 cycles of IUI before utilizing any medications. If my wife was able to get pregnant after IUI and medicated IUI Dr. Shenoy stated we could talk about a new plan.
Dr. Shenoy wanted my wife to track her period and then 10 days later, she would take ovulation tests. Once we got a smiley face on the ovulation tests, we would call the clinic and have an appointment the next day. We'd go to the appointment for the next day and have the IUI. My wife was able to get pregnant after 2 cycles.
How competent was Chandra Shenoy at LGBTQ+ care?
The reason we chose Dr. Shenoy was because she went on Instagram and talked about reproductive choices specifically for LGBTQ patients. It made us feel comfortable right away
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
The nurses were great and very knowledgeable.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
The testing was a lot and I know some people don't want to be tested for everything, but it was very comforting to know that my wife's numbers were within a good range. The clinic also wanted genetic testing which we did and found my wife had a genetic disorder that could be passed on. While this was scary, the genetic counselor and Fellow were very helpful in alleviating some fears and concerns.
After all the testing, the process for IUI was very easy. The staff was great to work with. Just know that you may not see the same people every time. The nurses were the ones who performed the implantation, unless they couldn't then the fellow came in to assist.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
We knew we wanted to get pregnant right after we got married so we changed our insurance to have the lowest out-of-pocket costs. I think the most we paid out of pocket was 2400 dollars. Unfortunately, I don't think that provides a very good idea of the costs
My husband and I both really enjoyed Dr. Babayev as our doctor. He did my mock transfer, both consultations, and FET. He is very knowledgeable and explains everything to you in way that is easy to understand...The thing we enjoyed most was his humor and ability to make us laugh...During the FET, I did not have a full bladder like they asked. He was able to still complete the transfer successfully.
We loved the nursing staff at Mayo! Every nurse we dealt with was so kind, showed compassion, and was very helpful. They always answered my questions and would respond to the online portal within a few hours...Fresh embryo cycle: $13,400 Frozen embryo cycle: $5,500...enjoyed the clinics communication with us...Mayo prefers that you transfer a single embryo...if we had multiple failed IVF cycles, they would consider transferring more than one embryo.
How was your experience with Samir Babayev at Mayo Clinic?
My husband and I both really enjoyed Dr. Babayev as our doctor. He did my mock transfer, both consultations, and FET. He is very knowledgeable and explains everything to you in way that is easy to understand. He answered all of our questions and guided us when we were unsure of what to do during our consultation. We enjoyed his humor the most during those meetings. He also did my frozen embryo transfer. He explained and talked you through everything he was doing and showed you what tools he was using. He was very professional. My bladder was not as full as it was suppose to be to perform the FET, so I was nervous I messed up. He was very confident and reassured us that he could still complete the transfer without adding water to my bladder. I trusted him and felt our transfer went very smoothly.

Dr. Babayev followed all protocols and treatment strategies that Mayo had told us about. During the FET, I did not have a full bladder like they asked. He was able to still complete the transfer successfully. He was able to see everything without the help of a full bladder.

Describe Samir Babayev's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Mayo prefers that you transfer a single embryo. He did state that if we had multiple failed IVF cycles, they would consider transferring more than one embryo.
Unfortunately, he [Dr. Samir Babayev] went through the motions of consent, etc. and failed to even look at ultrasound results that the nurse discovered after our appointment with him, which ended up in us postponing everything. Thankfully his nurse was observant or we would have missed this...did a great job explaining everything, but some of his explanations were a little over my husband's (who does not work in the medical field like myself) head. Dr. Babayev was on time to all of our appointments and was friendly, but not necessarily warm/comforting.
The nursing staff here [at Mayo Clinic- Rochester] is nothing short of amazing. They have all answered my sometimes multiple questions each day via patient portal with compassion. They are very quick to update my plan of care and are always on top of everything...The entire IVF process (monitoring via labs/US, ICSI, embryo storage, retrieval, and transfer) was $14,000 - this did not include medications or any appointments prior...Although Mayo is a large company, the REI department is very small and easy to find. Thankfully everything is done in the same location for all visits. The only thing that bothered me was that they really push for you to utilize their pharmacy for medications which was nearly double the cost of medications from other pharmacies.

Be sure to ask questions if you do not understand. Dr. Babayev used a lot of medical lingo that we hadn't necessarily heard before when visiting with other doctors.

We went into the appointment with an open mind as he was new to the facility, but had not seen any doctors that we really didn't like at this point. Unfortunately, he went through the motions of consent, etc. and failed to even look at ultrasound results that the nurse discovered after our appointment with him, which ended up in us postponing everything. Thankfully his nurse was observant or we would have missed this.
Describe the protocols Samir Babayev used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
Dr. Babayev started us on an antagonist protocol based off of my age (<30) and diagnosis of unexplained infertility. I was prescribed Gonal F (250mcg for elevated FSH), Menopur (75u), Ganirelix (250mcg), & hCG (10,000 u).

We were hopeful to transfer multiple embryos if possible due to my young age, lack of pregnancies for 2 years, unexplained infertility, and no other health concerns but Dr. Babayev was very against this.
Make sure you ask questions, otherwise she [Dr. Shenoy] doesnt really say much...I went from using lupron, and trigger injections for 6 cycles, straight to IVF...we had to convert to a freeze all cycle due to hyperstimulation...She didnt really argue against my request to transfer two embryos after the first 2 single transfers had failed...in the beginning of starting everything that she seemed very robotic, like she had the same speech for everybody. But then towards the end of my time that I spent at that clinic It seemed that the more negative results I got, the more sympathetic and personable she became.
sometimes the doctors [at Mayo Clinic] would put in the notes what and when my next lab, appointment, ultrasound, etc. would be, but it would never get scheduled so i would have to call and remind them to schedule it. Other times they would order a medication and i would go pick it up, and it was never actually sent to pharmacy, so i would have to wait for them to call the doctors and wait for it to be ready...It seems like they do the same treatment for every single person and are not open to alternate options and protocols. every idea i had read about other fertility clinics doing in the surrounding area was shot down because they said that there isn't any true evidence that "said idea" actually works.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
She was good with explaining and answering any questions that i had. But every time something failed, it was always the same answer. "we dont really know what happens, or why they dont implant". And maybe that is truly the case, but I wish she would have tried harder to come up with a different plan every time and try something new.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Make sure you ask questions, otherwise she doesnt really say much.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
There were times in the beginning of starting everything that she seemed very robotic, like she had the same speech for everybody. But then towards the end of my time that I spent at that clinic It seemed that the more negative results I got, the more sympathetic and personable she became.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
I went from using lupron, and trigger injections for 6 cycles, straight to IVF. I used menopur, ganirelix, gonal-f, lupron...probably other but i dont remember them all. we had to convert to a freeze all cycle due to hyperstimulation. I kept bleeding right after starting progesterone in oil and we would have to cancel the cycle. They then decided to have me do the estrace vaginally instead of orally, and that stopped the bleeding prior to the transfer.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
The nursing staff were all wonderful. They were very supportive and compassionate. It felt nice leaving and feeling like they truly genuinely wanted everything to work out for you.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
The clinic works as a team approach to everything. so although i had Dr. Shenoy for a majority of my procedures, i had a mix of all of them at some point. This is good and bad in my opinion. it was great because they can all get together and put their brains together to try to help you get pregnant, but i also feel like none of them are truly invested in me. My biggest complaint is that i feel like a doll on a factory assembly line. It seems like they do the same treatment for every single person and are not open to alternate options and protocols. every idea i had read about other fertility clinics doing in the surrounding area was shot down because they said that there isn't any true evidence that "said idea" actually works.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
the cost for my stimulation and egg retrieval was $12,000 for the procedure, and monitoring. and i paid about $6000 out of pocket for my medications. Each frozen embryo transfer costed $4000, and ultrasounds were anywhere from $600-$1000. Medications for FET were much cheaper. Lupron was about $80 per vial, and Progesterone in oil was $10. Estrace was so minimal in cost i dont even remember caring about the cost.
Describe Chandra Shenoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
She didnt really argue against my request to transfer two embryos after the first 2 single transfers had failed.
What specific things went wrong at Mayo Clinic?
Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy

I felt he [Dr. Khan] was very compassionate and he was extremely knowledgeable. He was also good at explaining the process multiple ways in order for both my husband and I to understand what the process was going to be like.... We are utilizing donor eggs. We had to go through a psychological evaluation in order to be approved for Egg Donor IVF. From there I had to have a false transfer in order to make sure my uterus was in good shape and I was capable of becoming pregnant and carrying a child.
It's a large campus [Mayo] so make sure you get there early to find your way. All of the staff we encountered (related to our visit and not) were very friendly and helpful. I felt like everyone that worked there was very knowledgeable and felt comfortable being treated there.... While trying to communicate with the office via the patient portal or over the phone I felt very uncomfortable and felt like I wasn't being given all of the information
How was your experience with Zaraq Khan at Mayo Clinic?
I felt he was very compassionate and he was extremely knowledgeable. He was also good at explaining the process multiple ways in order for both my husband and I to understand what the process was going to be like. He spent a lot of time speaking with us and we felt like we were a priority while we were there. I felt like he was optimistic, but also factual which I appreciated.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Zaraq Khan at Mayo Clinic?
I would just say that while patients aren't there it would be nice to feel like a priority over the phone. I would also like him to give more direct advice where as I feel like overall he was more optimistic than realistic.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Zaraq Khan at Mayo Clinic?

We are utilizing donor eggs. We had to go through a psychological evaluation in order to be approved for Egg Donor IVF. From there I had to have a false transfer in order to make sure my uterus was in good shape and I was capable of becoming pregnant and carrying a child. We are now in the process of purchasing our eggs and setting up our orientation date and from there we will receive the meds necessary and then have the transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Mayo Clinic. (Assigned nurse: Katie Ley)
She was very nice and knew her stuff. She put us at ease about the process and helped us understands the next steps involved in the process. She has been available for questions over the phone and online which has been a lifesaver during the egg purchasing portion since we have to coordinate with Mayo and the Egg bank separately.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Zaraq Khan at Mayo Clinic.
We haven't been though all the procedures yet but my understanding include the actual IVF process which is about $8000, meds are about $2000, eggs are about $30,000.
Describe Zaraq Khan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
He made it clear that it would be a single embryo transfer unless the embryos didn't develop well in which case he may transfer two.
Honestly I didn’t feel like Ebbie [Dr. Stewart] took me seriously. I am only 24 years old, but I am married and having a baby is my choice. She wants to go straight to IVF and she didn’t do a great job explaining it. I wish she would let me try ovulation drugs first, but my husbands semen analysis came back low. Now he is currently taking clomid and Ebbie still will only give us the option of IVF. Which we can’t afford. Also, last time I was in her office I was crying they told me to exit the back door because they didn’t want other patients seeing me.
My last 3 appointments [at the Mayo Clinic] which was one ultrasound, blood work, and just talking to them has added up to over $2,000 I have to pay out of pocket. She gave me a pamphlet for IVF which states it will cost us $10,000 for IVF not including any testing or medications. My husbands last 3 appointments have also added up to $800 for his semen analysis and talking to a urologist.

Ask her for other options and do a better job explaining things.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ebbie Stewart at Mayo Clinic?
She wasn’t willing to try any noninvasive procedures. She wants us to go straight to IVF. Which is really expensive. I hope to get help to get pregnant or be able to afford IVF.
Describe the protocols Ebbie Stewart used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
Right now I am only taking Metformin. Once we figure out money she wants us to do IVF. She refuses to give me just Letrozole to try first. So far she hasn’t helped me at all.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
Every time I check in some nurses look at me weird because I look so young. I don’t feel like they treat me with respect. I’m married and am an adult they shouldn’t judge me.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
It’s Mayo Clinic, which is the best of the best. If I had more money to get more treatments I’m sure they could help me have a baby. I just wish they would try more things with me. I would like to try less invasive procedures. I also wish they were more understanding about the financial burden fertility treatments put on us. We are so stressed out but we just want help.

He [Dr. Khan] is very open and honest and up front - I 100% appreciate that, I don't want anything sugar-coated, I don't want anyone to give me false hope - he does none of that, he's honest and I appreciate that...So far I have only used him to diagnose my endometriosis and he performed the surgery. I'm hopeful we can continue with him through the IVF process...His bedside manner showed that he cared about my feelings and my pain I was experiencing. After messages were sent his way he took the time to call me rather than reply in the messaging system.
Nurses are a dime a dozen [at Mayo Clinic], some are good, some are not, some are competent, some never will be. It's unfortunate but that's how life goes. How was your experience with Zaraq Khan at Mayo Clinic?
He has an incredible knowledge base of women, and seems to understand everything I've told him that I've dealt with - even though he doesn't have a uterus. And he appears to care about the pain I've endured and the frustrations I've had with previous physicians. His energy level is refreshing even though I usually see him later in the day and he's probably ready to be done for the day. Everything about him (thus far) has been amazing.

Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
Since my first round of treatment several years ago, the REI office moved. Originally they were right next to the OB section, which was awful as a patient - riding in the elevator with a pregnant woman, to the same floor, to see her go in the door I want to go in, but I had to go to the other side since I wasn't pregnant. Now, I'm not sure where OB is and that's great! I haven't been forced on an awkward elevator ride yet with someone pregnant like last time.

Good communication. Compassionate but factual. He [Dr. Khan] was friendly and warm but realistic which was appreciated. He was very knowledgeable and was good at demonstrating and explaining complex procedures. Overall i would recommend him to others. I felt like he truly cared about us and the result we were looking for. ... he seemed hopeful with the interest of the patient at mind but still factual which I appreciated.
Strengths [of Mayo Clinic] include knowledge and ability to get things done. ... Made us drive 2 1/2 hours to get to clinic when we could have had same labs and tests done in our hometown and faxed over. Again some repeated labs and sperm analysis because it was "outside window" which just resulted in the same results but an additional cost. Also, when i was first seen the reproductive endocrinology department was on the same floor as OB so you also had to deal with seeing happy pregnant people all around you while you were told you couldn't have kids.

Strengths include knowledge and ability to get things done. Cons were that it was a seemingly drawn out process that repeated tests and procedures for monitory benefit. Again some repeated labs and sperm analysis because it was "outside window" which just resulted in the same results but an additional cost. Describe the specific things that went wrong at Mayo Clinic.
I had labs done originally at the Clinic in Eau Claire and told they were normal but when i went to Rochester they told me they were very abnormal. This resulted in a delay of treatment.
[Dr. Cardenas Palecek] treated us like family and walked us through each step...She is very straight forward and direct. Gave us the information we were looking for and were able to move forward with the process as a whole. Guided us but my no means lead us towards things we didn't want or need. Understood our situation and made us feel like this is normal and plenty of women and LGBTQ couples go through what we were also going through.
We started off with a baseline and all test were preformed to make sure our numbers were good [at Mayo Clinic]. Started with clomid cycles which produced a sufficient amount of eggs and also the HCG shot to active ovulation. IUI performed with donor sperm...They [nurses] were the best to work with! Could not have chosen a better team that made us feel like family...For 6 IUIs plus meds, donor sperm, testing roughly $20000

Started with clomid cycles which produced a sufficient amount of eggs and also the HCG shot to active ovulation. IUI performed with donor sperm. Moved to Letrozole instead of clomid to help thicken lining. Did an HSG test, tubes were open. Final IUI were placed on hormone injections. Out of all 6 cycles, all were negative pregnancies except one false positive chemical pregnancy.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Mayo Clinic. (Assigned nurse: Rhiannon Riley)
They were the best to work with! Could not have chosen a better team that made us feel like family. They prayed for us each and every time and were always uplifting. Any and all questions were answered. They were patient with us when we had tons of questions. It was also a learning experience for them as well as we were one of the few same-sex couples to be doing IUI.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
Make sure to check your billing. Systems have errors but they were able to fix ours and were glad that we brought them to their attention. Make sure to bring all your insurance information as they will need that. Also, know what your insurance covers before doing any procedures. I would definitely get pre-treatment estimates.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Gabriela Cardenas Palecek at Mayo Clinic.
For 6 IUIs plus meds, donor sperm, testing roughly $20000
Describe Gabriela Cardenas Palecek's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
If we were able to continue with and IVF, we would prefer a multiple embryo transfer.
He [Dr. Charles Coddington] is warm and welcoming and knowledgeable. I wish the Mayo Clinic were willing to take more risks in REI treatment, it is just quite conservative. The overall process was as smooth as it could be for 1 retrieval and two failed FET's with PCOS and Secondary infertility.... This round we have done genetic testing and have 8 "normal embryos" they will not let us put more than one in. The first time (prior to genetic testing) we did just one (failed FET) then we did two embryos the second time (failed FET) so we were hoping this third time they would allow 2 embryos to be transferred but since they are genetically tested they are very conservative with that.
They [The Mayo Clinic] have recently moved to a different area and it feels less clinical now, the environment is now more up to date and more warm/welcoming. The sonographer Roxanne is phenomenal she knows her stuff, is so great and personable and is an expert in her field..... $15,000 for retrieval and first round of IVF. Then $5,000 for each FET. $6,000 for genetic testing.

We started with pills when those werent working we went to injections then to IVF. I was happy we skipped IUI since we knew it was more on my part then my partners part. I feel like IUI's would have been a waste.

Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Mayo Clinic.
The only hiccup I had was between pharmacy's because I have to go to a special pharmacy this made it more confusing and there were some issues getting the meds in a timely manner. But that wasn't necessarily on Mayo's part but more my insurance.
Dr. Coddington is kind and passionate. Very easy to approach and is positive. Overall our experience has been positive, I just wish we would find success. I appreciate that they didn't beat around the bushes and moved to IVF after no success with pills and shots.... We started with 6 months of letrozole with no luck I still was not ovulating. Then moved to a trigger shot for 3 months. No luck with that just a late period. After that we decided to move to IVF. My husbands sperm count is great and my PCOS was giving us some trouble.
Amazing nursing staff [Mayo Clinic]. They are passionate and kind-hearted. We had some communication issues every once in a while but nothing too scary or disheartening. The biggest challenge was medication and making sure I had what I needed and that was more of an issue with my pharmacy and insurance than with the nursing staff. The nursing staff was very helpful and educational.... It was approximately $15,000 for stim and retrieval

My husbands sperm count is great and my PCOS was giving us some trouble. We did two frozen embryo transfers. The first transfering 1 Grade A embryo with no success and the second FET was with 2 Grade A embryos with no success. We took a long break and am now discussing next steps. Last fall we moved forward with PGS testing and now have 8 strong embryos that tested chromosomally normal. Now we are deciding if we want to do another transfer or get a GC. We had no problems getting pregnant with our first and only 5 years ago.

REI is not one of the areas Mayo Clinic puts a lot of time, money and resources into and I don't blame them. They can specialize and succeed in other areas that many hospitals cannot. So with that it would be nice for them to be a leader in REI but I understand they can't be a leader in everything. It's just challenging because there are not too many REI options available in this area. Their sonographer is amazing. She completely understands REI and is extremely personable. She is very knowledgable.

Describe Charles Coddington's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Mayo Clinic is very conservative when it comes to transferring only one maybe two embryos. I had to talk them into putting two embryos the second time we did a transfer. I completely understand their rationale and am appreciative that they are conservative with this.
Each visit with Dr. Khan he was through, friendly, humorous and compassionate. He did a great job explaining the process with specific and light hearted examples; making the tough process and decision making more bearable. It was also great that he made sure we understood the process and next steps....
[Mayo Clinic] strengths: great reviews and awards, prompt, compassionate, available.. "weakness" : I was not anticipating waiting 2 months to actually start my cycle. I completed the consult and pre-testing within two weeks of one another, then was told the first available date for me to start was in 2 months...Mayo Clinic uses an online portal for questions; which is really convenient. The nurses are very prompt and get back in as little as an hour and up to a day.

strengths: great reviews and awards, prompt, compassionate, available, this is the only clinic I found in my area that accepts insurance for Advanced Reproductive Technologies (ART), other clinics I was looking at required to patient to pay out of pocket for ART.
"weakness" : I was not anticipating waiting 2 months to actually start my cycle. I completed the consult and pre-testing within two weeks of one another, then was told the first available date for me to start was in 2 months.
However, this goes to show that since there is a waiting list it is a popular clinic and worth the wait!

Dr. Coddington was very professional and experienced, but also took the time to encourage us to ask questions and gave very thorough and helpful answers. Our IVF orientation was when we had the most conversation time with him, and we didn't feel rushed so he could get to his next appointment like a lot of doctors do, which I appreciated. When I was taken to the OR for my egg retrieval (feeling very nervous) he and the whole team met me outside the door with smiles and genuine welcomes, and made me feel a lot more at ease about the procedure.
The front desk/appointment staff [at Mayo] were relatively less warm and empathizing than the rest of the staff. ..I asked for a mental health referral, and one of the doctors communicated to the therapist that I had a history of miscarriages, which I have not...I've seen many different nurses, but they've all been very compassionate, professional and warm...I had complete confidence in the clinic overall because of the expertise of the medical staff, which far outweighed the other negatives.
How was your experience with Charles Coddington at Mayo Clinic?
Dr Coddington is very professional and experienced. I felt well taken care of, and in good hands for our IVF procedure. He wears really great old-school tweed jackets to his client appointments, which I find adorable. Our IVF cycle is still in progress, but I've had a very good experience so far.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Charles Coddington at Mayo Clinic?
I was originally a bit hesitant because my first doctor (Dr. Daftary) left Mayo before my IVF cycle started, and I'd really liked him and connected with him. Dr Coddington's age made me a little nervous, but in the end, I felt it was a huge benefit, both in terms of his experience and longtime expertise.

I've seen many different nurses, but they've all been very compassionate, professional and warm. During one particular visit when I was having a hard time, the nurse took extra time with me to share a bit of her own story and talk about what had worked for her.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
The front desk/appointment staff were relatively less warm and empathizing than the rest of the staff. I'd still highly recommend Mayo based on my experience with the doctors and nurses, but I have had several experiences where their front desk staff were unclear, short, or treated me more like a number than a person.
On the other hand, I had complete confidence in the clinic overall because of the expertise of the medical staff, which far outweighed the other negatives.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Charles Coddington at Mayo Clinic.
We had initial testing and procedures done at our local clinic, which was around $2500 (not covered by insurance). Before starting IVF I needed a procedure that cost about $2000 (not covered) and an MRI to check a possible issue with my pituitary gland (spendy, but covered by insurance), plus a variety of blood tests that were probably around $400 total. Then the IVF itself was about $12k plus the cost of meds, which ended up being a bit over $3k (neither of these were covered by insurance, but I did qualify for the EMD Serono Compassionate Care program, which saved a considerable sum on meds)
Describe Charles Coddington's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
The team at Mayo strongly encourages single transfer whenever possible, and thoroughly explained their reasons why for my case. I felt confident about the choice based on their recommendation.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Mayo Clinic.
I asked for a mental health referral, and one of the doctors communicated to the therapist that I had a history of miscarriages, which I have not. It didn't end up being a big deal, but I'm not sure how they got that confused.
He [Dr. Coddington] is very knowledgeable and makes an effort to explain things in a way that the patient can understand. He comes across as very caring and treats patients as unique individuals versus as just anothee appointment on his busy calendar...Unfortunately, I wasn't able to see Dr Coddington as regularly as i would have liked and ended up primarily seeing a physicians assistant. I saw 2 different doctors to discuss fertility options. Dr. Coddington did my polyp removal surgery and post surgery appointment.
Some of the nurses [at Mayo Clinic] were informative and patient in their responses, while others seemed rushed, did not give accurate responses to my questions or only partially answered my questions. My medical records did not accurately reflect the number of IUIs I had nor the results of IUI and when I pointed this out, she didn't appear to follow up to ensure it was corrected...The first consultation I had was with a doctor who was leaving the clinic shortly after my initial appointment. I got very basic information and when I asked more questions she said I'd have plenty of opportunities to seek answers as I moved forward with treatments. I paid over $500 for that appointment

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Charles Coddington at Mayo Clinic?
Ask all the questions you have, even if seems like a superficial question.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Charles Coddington at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Coddington made sure all my questions were answered and expressed a very empathetic and personable demeanour with sincerity.

I got very basic information and when I asked more questions she said I'd have plenty of opportunities to seek answers as I moved forward with treatments. I paid over $500 for that appointment, as my insurance does not cover fertility treatments or appointments. I did not have opportunities to get more in depth answers from a doctor and from there spoke mainly to the nurses. My advice would be to be sure to ask a lot of questions and explore all of your options for fertility with your doctor so you are most informed. Also, do your own research, as I found more information on the internet than what my initial consultation provided.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Charles Coddington at Mayo Clinic.
After 4 IUIs, my bill was about $5000
Describe Charles Coddington's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
I have not yet moved forward with embryo transfer, however hope to do so at my next cycle. The PA informed me that they'll likely transfer one with the genetic testing and 2 if no genetic testing.

As described in my previous comment, information was entered inaccurately in my medical records and not corrected. Also, I did not receive thorough information at my initial appointment. This was not by Dr. Coddington though, it was a doctor who is no longer staffed at the Mayo Clinic.
[Dr. Jani Jensen's] Bedside manner and communication skills EXCELLENT. Warm, positive, super quick to pick up on everything, and great sense of humor. Also I'd consider her the BEST of all the RE's I've seen on our very, very long journey. Wish I had met her first!!!...She was ON IT and put me through the ringer, yes - but I feel was the most accurate and detailed in her diagnosis and proposed treatment of our situation (recurrent loss, unexplained infertility)
Had we done IVF here it Mayo only would accept a small % of our insurance so I think it was going to cost $9500 of $18000 if I recall correctly...Mayo doesn't screw around. They are very, very serious about what they do. It was 150% worth it to drive from MSP to Rochester. You will be grilled, you will be put through the ringer, they will test everything under the sun if deemed at all necessary. It's what we needed with our "unexplained" diagnosis and recurrent losses.
How was your experience with Jani Jensen at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Jensen was wonderful. I wish I had known about her first, instead of weaving my way through multiple other docs (one clinic closed, one clinic really wasn't our jam). We went to Dr. Jensen at Mayo for a 3rd opinion - they were also the only other place who maybe would accept our insurance. She conducted a very detailed history, exam, consultation. She gave us the closest anyone could give us (legally), as to the "odds" of IVF working for our specific situation.

Don't recall; interaction very brief

We retrieved 32 follicles [with Dr. Charles Coddington]. I ended up with OHSS but everyone at the clinic checked up on me daily to make sure everything was going well. I was updated every step of the way. Everything went very well...I always left my appointments knowing exactly what was going on and my questions were always answered...He was kind and compassionate. He explained things very well and always made me feel better about the whole process. Never once did I feel uncomfortable or rushed.

Everyone in the office was always so nice. They treated you like a human being and took as much time as necessary for my care. I never felt rushed. I always left my appointments knowing exactly what was going on and my questions were always answered.

I don't remember the exact protocol but we started with Gonal-f and we started slow. There wasn't much progress at first but everyone stayed patient and continued to slowly increase my dose. We finally had a decent number of large follicles and we were ready for retrieval. We retrieved 32 follicles. I ended up with OHSS but everyone at the clinic checked up on me daily to make sure everything was going well. I was updated every step of the way. Everything went very well.

I had insurance so cost wasn't a huge issue for us. But the overall cost was comparable to other clinics doing IVF.
Dr. Coddington is very patient and kind...Dr. Coddington does prefer single embryo transfers in the cases where appropriate so be did spend a lot of time going through the risks and stats when we decided to transfer 2 embryos on our 3rd try. ....Dr. Coddington takes the time to explain the treatments and reasons for the path they’ve chosen for you. He listens to your concerns and will share his opinion. He’s very knowledgeable about the risks of multiple embryo transfers but never tried to pressure me in to choosing a different option at that point in our journey.
The nurses [at Mayo] are very kind but we did have some organizational issues with them. Nothing that caused any problems but did cause a little stress at times...At the time a cycle with satellite monitoring was $8700. That did not include a consult or any testing prior to starting. Icsi and cryopreservation was a separate charge....I just had a blood test that didn’t get ordered so it involved a return trip to the lab.

Dr. Coddington does prefer single embryo transfers in the cases where appropriate so be did spend a lot of time going through the risks and stats when we decided to transfer 2 embryos on our 3rd try. We did a normal Ivf cycle with menopur and gonal f. We had a retrieval and a 5 day transfer with icsi.

Organization was a slight problem when I was a patient. I did refer a friend there later and she had even bigger problems with them being disorganized. They were small problems such as orders not being sent but stressful when dealing with everything as a whole.

We did opt for a multiple transfer on our 3rd round but the first two were single. Dr. Coddington did suggest eSet for us but was open to a multiple for the 3rd cycle.

We made the trek from the Twin Cities down to Rochester for all of our appointments based on the quality of care we received from Dr. Jensen. In addition, and although you can see any of the doctors for appointments, I only scheduled my appointments with her, (though for my retrieval I didn't have any choice in the matter as they are on a schedule for retrievals...
[At Mayo Clinic Fertility] pricing is $9,900 for one round of IVf, which includes everything except for male testing/collection (which I believe was around $300 - $400), embryo storage ($300-$400) and ICSI (around $1,100). It also does not include medications. With my transfer being cancelled, the frozen transfer will be included as well as I had viable embryos.

In addition, and although you can see any of the doctors for appointments, I only scheduled my appointments with her, (though for my retrieval I didn't have any choice in the matter as they are on a schedule for retrievals). She is the type of person I respond best to - "Get $(#% Done" - but does so in a way that still comes off as compassionate and caring. I'm still in the middle of my care, but I feel like she is doing everything in her power to make it successful.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jani Jensen at Mayo Clinic?
Be straight and to the point with your objectives for care and how much (or how little) information you may want from her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jani Jensen at Mayo Clinic?
You know when you go out on a first date and you just click with the other person? That was my experience with Dr. Jensen. She took the time to get to know my husband and me, did an amazing job of picking up on we needed from her in terms of type of information and how it was presented, made sure all of our questions were answered, suggested a second opinion from a "baby or your money back" clinic when we finally needed to be moved to IVF, and even took her lunch break to come back and talk to us during one appointment.
Describe the protocols Jani Jensen used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
4 rounds of letrozole + timed intercourse. 3 were suggested, we did a bonus round because we were going to be out of town and couldn't do an IUI that month.
3 IUIs. We were a good candidate for this being successful given the diagnosis of unexplained infertility, quality of husband's sperm, and our overall age/health. We were given the option of doing IVF right away, but after reviewing the statistics with Dr. Jensen, 3 IUI cycles seemed like the right choice.
Currently in the middle our first round of IVF. After 3 IUIs, were were told the chance of it being successful dropped significantly so we should try to be more aggressive.
We were given options on meds to help with pricing, so it was a Folistim/Gonal-F + Menopur cycle, with Ganirelix for a few days before the Pregnyl trigger.
Egg retrieval - 16 total, 12 mature, 10 fertilized without ICSI. ICSI is standard at Mayo for unexplained infertility, but given the additional cost and the studies I looked at (percentage of live births with/without ICSI for unexplained infertility couples with no MFI) we opted against it.
Slightly elevated progesterone on the day of trigger (2.0), so the fresh transfer was cancelled and all embryos were frozen on Day 1. Next step is another consult with Dr. Jensen, then a protocol for a frozen transfer which will be 7-8 weeks out.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
The regular ultrasound tech is fantastic, as is the phone staff.
Anna was also a stand out for us in terms of care. One nurse had a difficult time with our first IUI, and seemed freaked out when it was not going well so she had someone else come in to finish the job (turned out to be Anna). She didn't have the same problems, which was good.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
On-time appointments and the quality of care from top to bottom are fantastic. Some of the appointments for education can be a bit repetitive and seemingly useless, especially if you are traveling from out of town. That said, I also don't think they did a good job of explaining their ICSI policy to us at any point, which is an area they can improve on.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Mayo Clinic.
The only problems we had were failing to understand their position on ICSI -- it did not appear from our original IVF consult that it would be needed, but we were later informed it was pretty much standard. There was a disconnect between what we were told by Dr. Jensen (husband's sperm was A++++++) and what we were told by the tech that would do ICSI ("ok sperm with less than perfect morphology"). This was a bit disconcerting, and I felt as though the tech in particular wanted to do ICSI. Our own research into ICSI made it seem like an unnecessary expense.
We were also unprepared for having a cancelled transfer, and received a phone call from the weekend doctor on the day of our last ultrasound and bloodwork (the day we triggered) indicating that the progesterone level was too high. I would have liked to have been informed that this was a possibility in advance of that phone call so I could better prepare myself mentally.
[Dr. Shenoy] is very professional, but also personal. She kept me informed and explained everything after my egg retrieval in a way that I could understand. We had her again for a frozen embryo transfer and felt very confident in her doing our transfer...[she] Recommend 1 our first three rounds...She was great to talk to! Explained very thing very well. Checked in on me frequently.
[Mayo Clinic is] A well- known hospital with great doctors and nurses! Trusted their advice and opinions. I did get frustrated after our third failed embryo transfer that they weren’t trying different options. I voiced my concerns and tried something new for the fourth round...Egg retrieval was about $13,000. Each transfer was about $5,000..

Egg retrieval was a quick process. 10 days and 4 shots a day. Multiple appointments. Frozen embryo transfer was a little over a month long process. Lupron shots then progesterone shots.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Mayo Clinic. (Assigned nurse: Mandy )
We LOVED Mandy! And every nurse we worked with! They are so caring and personable! They truly care about your story and the difficult road you have to endure. Mandy would always check in with us.
