Dr. Shenoy is excellent. She helped us navigate through a process that was both physically and mentally very challenging. She understood, acknowledged, and adjusted care based on the mental impacts of the process which was much appreciated. She encouraged us to push forward several times when weren't sure and she was right in doing so. She didn't always just provide the answers we wanted to hear which is a sign of a great doctor. We met with several other providers prior and they were all willing to do whatever we wanted. Dr. Shenoy and team listened to our goals and gently pushed us in the direction that they know would allow us to best achieve them rather than just allowing us to make a decision based on our initial comfort levels which would not have led to the best outcomes.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?

Dr. Shenoy is a bit more on the quiet side. If you have questions, ask them. She will have or find the answers for you. Share how you are feeling with her and she will help you to make the best decisions for you.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?

All experiences with Dr. Shenoy and team were very customized and thoughtful. The whole team showed great empathy, went to great lengths to answer all questions, and were extremely focused on our comfort as we were extremely nervous throughout the entire process. The initial process of identifying outside monitoring and the standard process during the start of the cycle were more hands off so felt a bit more like a number - but when any needs arose during this time the team was 1,000% ready to help.

Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.

Started with standard birth control. I think my body may have overreacted to the medication based on my side effects and it seemed like I started the cycle overly suppressed (but that's my thought/ opinion). Was on mid-range doses for standard IVF. My Gonal-F stayed the same but Menopur was doubled around mid-cycle. I responded slowly at first and the cycle was longer than I expected - because I'm usually always very sensitive to medications. In the end my e2 levels looked good (around 3,600 at trigger) but only had 5 measurable follicles. Lupron trigger which may not have worked based on the bloodwork the next day so I freaked out that we'd have to cancel at the last minute. The team reassured me that it was OK and we did a second HCG trigger ASAP the day prior. Day of retrieval 22 eggs were retrieved which was a big surprise. 20 were mature, 17 fertilized, 16 made it to day 3, 12 were graded A or B on day 5 and were frozen. 4 PGT-A normal.

Because I had to undergo outside monitoring and I didn't have a designated nursing contact the start of the process was a bit hectic. The team was very responsive in general, but a few times in situations where turnaround were urgent I became really nervous about getting responses in time. That said, the team was incredibly caring, compassionate, and well organized. I absolutely love the nurse that was there at my retrieval. She was such a positive force and blessing to have present.

I wouldn't define the situation as things going wrong at the clinic, but there was some room for improvement in my medication plan. I am very sensitive to medications and an existing medicine that I take had an interaction with the birth control needed at the start. It caused significant symptoms which required my physician outside of the fertility clinic to need to adjust my medication. Once the situation was realized and understood, a fix was put into place quickly but the process to get to the point of understanding was a bit nerve wracking. It was a unique situation though - not an everyday situation.

They had difficulty completing the procedure and viewing the uterus, and I left feeling unconfident and uncomfortable. Dr. Shenoy is a capable doctor and did respond to all of my questions in person or through the online portal. She completed all medical tasks needed; however, she did not go above and beyond to make me feel cared about.

There was very little personalization in care. At Mayo Clinic, the doctors rotate care so you may get a different doctor depending on the day. I was repeatedly told what they do for the IVF process in a very one size fits all manner. Under her care, nurses sent impersonal online portal messages. As I am diagnosed with unexplained infertility, I often had questions aimed at digging deeper into why my body was performing a certain way. These questions/concerns were not looked into further besides telling me what their protocol typically is.

Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.

I was given the standard Mayo Clinic REI department protocol. Due to my age below 35, I was told they only transfer 1 embryo at a time as a precaution to prevent the risk of twins. I began with birth control pills which I had been on for months due to issues with cysts. I was on Gonal F (225) Menopur (150) for 10 stim days. I had 2 monitoring ultrasounds because after the first one, my follicles took an extra day or two to mature, so a follow up was needed. No other blood work was done throughout the cycle. I took Cetrotide one day, and after was the trigger (hcg 10,000). Bloodwork was completed on day 4, 6, and 8. After the first and second blood tests my doses were increased due to slower response. My retrieval was two days after the trigger in the morning. 18 eggs, 13 mature, 6 fertilized, and 1 was blastocyst embryo by the time of transfer. I had a fresh embryo transfer five days later. 2 additional embryos became blastocyst and were frozen that day/evening. My transfer failed. A second embryo from that retrieval was transferred 3 months later using the FET protocol. The transfer was done with a different doctor at Mayo, but that embryo also did not implant and it failed.

Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.

Nurses are limited to the level of communication they provide due to the online portal limitations. Some nurses were far better communicators than others. I noticed several errors in the online communications that were due to clerical typing issues. Additionally, I had one difficult experience that was due to a mix up behind the scenes. When I needed a follow up ultrasound due to fluid on my uterine lining during an FET and was told to call and schedule the ultrasound, I called the front desk to set it up, but they said no orders for an ultrasound had been placed. So, the appointment desk left a message with the nursing team regarding this matter. In response a few hours later, I received a short message from nurse staff stating that if I’d like to schedule an ultrasound, please contact appointment desk (which I had already done). Once that was sorted out, I was able to schedule an appointment. I attend that appointment in a later week, and the ultrasound tech began the process for a follicle assessment. I had to tell the employee that I was not being seen for a follicle count as I was in the middle of an FET cycle. I had to explain to her that this appointment was supposed to be a follow up to check for fluid on my lining. The tech apologized and said that the order was made for a follicle assessment. Since I caught the mistake, the correct pictures were taken, but I left that appointment feeling very upset that someone behind the scenes put in the wrong order.

They had me injected Gonal F 300IU, Menopur 150 unit for 10 days, adding Ganirelix 250 mcg on the 5th day, and stopped all and had me injected HCG a day before my egg retrieval. My Estradiol was 895 on two days before the egg retrieval. They couldn't visualize my right ovary so they only retrieved 4 eggs from my left ovary. The first/last time they saw both ovaries was August 2021 at that time they counted 33 follicles. But since then all the ultrasound technicians including the resident at Mayo Rochester who did my last ultrasound on 2 days before my egg retrieval said they can't see my right ovaries. They attributed that to bowel gas or that the right ovary is shrinking. Not a lot explanation or not enough effort (to me) to visualize my right ovary. Or anything else that I can do to improve the outcomes.

Dr Khan is very good at sharing the real numbers, what our chances are at our age and what we could hope for. He was very personal and took time to build report and trust. We have the ability to ask questions through our medical portal and we get a response within 12 hours. The biggest thing is I felt comfortable being able to talk with Dr. Khan and he made time to answer every question we had.

They [Mayo Clinic] are a learning hospital so I have fellows or learners at every appointment, and they have medical teams who take turn covering care - so you may not know the doctor who will do your retrieval or transfer depending on when it is done...The clinic is very well run. You always have access to ask questions or to contact someone...they will only transfer one Embryo if PTGA tested. They will transfer 2 embryos if not tested. They do like to do a fresh transfer and then test the other embryos.

Suppressed my cycle for 4 weeks with regular birth control pills. I did have a large cist on my ovary that he was able to drain 2 days before starting the stimulation medicine. I am on 300 IU Follstem/Gonal-F and 150IU Menopur. We are mid cycle so we do not have results yet.

Everyone knows our story and knows what our care plan is before they see us. they take time to answer our questions and none of our questions are deemed silly. I just feel cared for by everyone. That I matter. That I am a person and my questions are valid.

I have age-related fertility challenges and DOR. I actually did freeze my eggs at another clinic in my mid-30s but unfortunately none of those were able to be successful upon thawing. I have tried high dose antagonist cycle with luteal estrace priming, and got okay results but not amazing number of eggs. Did cleavage stage fresh transfer of 2 embryos (BFN). Next, we switched to a mini-stim protocol, as he thought we could potentially get similar egg numbers but possibly higher quality with way less meds.

Haven’t had any great individual nursing interactions- they function as a large team and you don’t get to develop a rapport or relationship with them. We only met her twice and met more with the NPs and Fellows who worked with her, but our pregnancy journey was fairly short because my wife got pregnant on the second IUI. She explained different ways we could go about getting pregnant but didn't need to do anything other than IUI...It's always a little scary to be an LGBT couple not knowing what to expect but she was easy to work with.

Expect to do a lot of testing before even trying to get pregnant. We had a lot of testing including genetic testing, lab work, and seeing a psychologist. From the first meeting with her to the first treatment of IUI it was about 3 months.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?

She took our concerns into place and was honest with us. It's always a little scary to be an LGBT couple not knowing what to expect but she was easy to work with.

Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.

My wife's testing looked good, so Dr. Shenoy recommended starting IUI. She recommended 3 cycles of IUI before utilizing any medications. If my wife was able to get pregnant after IUI and medicated IUI Dr. Shenoy stated we could talk about a new plan. Dr. Shenoy wanted my wife to track her period and then 10 days later, she would take ovulation tests. Once we got a smiley face on the ovulation tests, we would call the clinic and have an appointment the next day. We'd go to the appointment for the next day and have the IUI. My wife was able to get pregnant after 2 cycles.

The testing was a lot and I know some people don't want to be tested for everything, but it was very comforting to know that my wife's numbers were within a good range. The clinic also wanted genetic testing which we did and found my wife had a genetic disorder that could be passed on. While this was scary, the genetic counselor and Fellow were very helpful in alleviating some fears and concerns. After all the testing, the process for IUI was very easy. The staff was great to work with. Just know that you may not see the same people every time. The nurses were the ones who performed the implantation, unless they couldn't then the fellow came in to assist.

Dr. Babayev followed all protocols and treatment strategies that Mayo had told us about. During the FET, I did not have a full bladder like they asked. He was able to still complete the transfer successfully. He was able to see everything without the help of a full bladder.

Dr. Babayev started us on an antagonist protocol based off of my age (<30) and diagnosis of unexplained infertility. I was prescribed Gonal F (250mcg for elevated FSH), Menopur (75u), Ganirelix (250mcg), & hCG (10,000 u).

She was good with explaining and answering any questions that i had. But every time something failed, it was always the same answer. "we dont really know what happens, or why they dont implant". And maybe that is truly the case, but I wish she would have tried harder to come up with a different plan every time and try something new.

I used menopur, ganirelix, gonal-f, lupron...probably other but i dont remember them all. we had to convert to a freeze all cycle due to hyperstimulation. I kept bleeding right after starting progesterone in oil and we would have to cancel the cycle. They then decided to have me do the estrace vaginally instead of orally, and that stopped the bleeding prior to the transfer.

The nursing staff were all wonderful. They were very supportive and compassionate. It felt nice leaving and feeling like they truly genuinely wanted everything to work out for you.

The clinic works as a team approach to everything. so although i had Dr. Shenoy for a majority of my procedures, i had a mix of all of them at some point. This is good and bad in my opinion. it was great because they can all get together and put their brains together to try to help you get pregnant, but i also feel like none of them are truly invested in me. My biggest complaint is that i feel like a doll on a factory assembly line. It seems like they do the same treatment for every single person and are not open to alternate options and protocols. every idea i had read about other fertility clinics doing in the surrounding area was shot down because they said that there isn't any true evidence that "said idea" actually works.

the cost for my stimulation and egg retrieval was $12,000 for the procedure, and monitoring. and i paid about $6000 out of pocket for my medications. Each frozen embryo transfer costed $4000, and ultrasounds were anywhere from $600-$1000. Medications for FET were much cheaper. Lupron was about $80 per vial, and Progesterone in oil was $10. Estrace was so minimal in cost i dont even remember caring about the cost.

Now, I'm not sure where OB is and that's great! I haven't been forced on an awkward elevator ride yet with someone pregnant like last time.

Strengths include knowledge and ability to get things done. Cons were that it was a seemingly drawn out process that repeated tests and procedures for monitory benefit. Made us drive 2 1/2 hours to get to clinic when we could have had same labs and tests done in our hometown and faxed over. Again some repeated labs and sperm analysis because it was "outside window" which just resulted in the same results but an additional cost. Also, when i was first seen the reproductive endocrinology department was on the same floor as OB so you also had to deal with seeing happy pregnant people all around you while you were told you couldn't have kids.

Herself and staff treated us like family and walked us through each step. They were encouraging and still have high hopes for us.

We started off with a baseline and all test were preformed to make sure our numbers were good. Started with clomid cycles which produced a sufficient amount of eggs and also the HCG shot to active ovulation. IUI performed with donor sperm. Moved to Letrozole instead of clomid to help thicken lining. Did an HSG test, tubes were open. Final IUI were placed on hormone injections. Out of all 6 cycles, all were negative pregnancies except one false positive chemical pregnancy.

They were the best to work with! Could not have chosen a better team that made us feel like family. They prayed for us each and every time and were always uplifting. Any and all questions were answered. They were patient with us when we had tons of questions. It was also a learning experience for them as well as we were one of the few same-sex couples to be doing IUI.

Make sure to check your billing. Systems have errors but they were able to fix ours and were glad that we brought them to their attention. Make sure to bring all your insurance information as they will need that. Also, know what your insurance covers before doing any procedures. I would definitely get pre-treatment estimates.

We started with 6 months of letrozole with no luck I still was not ovulating. Then moved to a trigger shot for 3 months. No luck with that just a late period. After that we decided to move to IVF. My husbands sperm count is great and my PCOS was giving us some trouble. We did two frozen embryo transfers. The first transfering 1 Grade A embryo with no success and the second FET was with 2 Grade A embryos with no success. We took a long break and am now discussing next steps. Last fall we moved forward with PGS testing and now have 8 strong embryos that tested chromosomally normal. Now we are deciding if we want to do another transfer or get a GC. We had no problems getting pregnant with our first and only 5 years ago.

REI is not one of the areas Mayo Clinic puts a lot of time, money and resources into and I don't blame them. They can specialize and succeed in other areas that many hospitals cannot. So with that it would be nice for them to be a leader in REI but I understand they can't be a leader in everything. It's just challenging because there are not too many REI options available in this area. Their sonographer is amazing. She completely understands REI and is extremely personable. She is very knowledgable.

Dr. Coddington was very professional and experienced, but also took the time to encourage us to ask questions and gave very thorough and helpful answers. Our IVF orientation was when we had the most conversation time with him, and we didn't feel rushed so he could get to his next appointment like a lot of doctors do, which I appreciated. When I was taken to the OR for my egg retrieval (feeling very nervous) he and the whole team met me outside the door with smiles and genuine welcomes, and made me feel a lot more at ease about the procedure.

The front desk/appointment staff [at Mayo] were relatively less warm and empathizing than the rest of the staff. ..I asked for a mental health referral, and one of the doctors communicated to the therapist that I had a history of miscarriages, which I have not...I've seen many different nurses, but they've all been very compassionate, professional and warm...I had complete confidence in the clinic overall because of the expertise of the medical staff, which far outweighed the other negatives.

Dr Coddington is very professional and experienced. I felt well taken care of, and in good hands for our IVF procedure. He wears really great old-school tweed jackets to his client appointments, which I find adorable. Our IVF cycle is still in progress, but I've had a very good experience so far.

I was originally a bit hesitant because my first doctor (Dr. Daftary) left Mayo before my IVF cycle started, and I'd really liked him and connected with him. Dr Coddington's age made me a little nervous, but in the end, I felt it was a huge benefit, both in terms of his experience and longtime expertise.

I've seen many different nurses, but they've all been very compassionate, professional and warm. During one particular visit when I was having a hard time, the nurse took extra time with me to share a bit of her own story and talk about what had worked for her.

The front desk/appointment staff were relatively less warm and empathizing than the rest of the staff. I'd still highly recommend Mayo based on my experience with the doctors and nurses, but I have had several experiences where their front desk staff were unclear, short, or treated me more like a number than a person. On the other hand, I had complete confidence in the clinic overall because of the expertise of the medical staff, which far outweighed the other negatives.

We had initial testing and procedures done at our local clinic, which was around $2500 (not covered by insurance). Before starting IVF I needed a procedure that cost about $2000 (not covered) and an MRI to check a possible issue with my pituitary gland (spendy, but covered by insurance), plus a variety of blood tests that were probably around $400 total. Then the IVF itself was about $12k plus the cost of meds, which ended up being a bit over $3k (neither of these were covered by insurance, but I did qualify for the EMD Serono Compassionate Care program, which saved a considerable sum on meds)

I got very basic information and when I asked more questions she said I'd have plenty of opportunities to seek answers as I moved forward with treatments. I paid over $500 for that appointment, as my insurance does not cover fertility treatments or appointments. I did not have opportunities to get more in depth answers from a doctor and from there spoke mainly to the nurses. My advice would be to be sure to ask a lot of questions and explore all of your options for fertility with your doctor so you are most informed. Also, do your own research, as I found more information on the internet than what my initial consultation provided.

Also I'd consider her the BEST of all the RE's I've seen on our very, very long journey. Wish I had met her first!!!...She was ON IT and put me through the ringer, yes - but I feel was the most accurate and detailed in her diagnosis and proposed treatment of our situation (recurrent loss, unexplained infertility)

Had we done IVF here it Mayo only would accept a small % of our insurance so I think it was going to cost $9500 of $18000 if I recall correctly...Mayo doesn't screw around. They are very, very serious about what they do. It was 150% worth it to drive from MSP to Rochester. You will be grilled, you will be put through the ringer, they will test everything under the sun if deemed at all necessary. It's what we needed with our "unexplained" diagnosis and recurrent losses.

How was your experience with Jani Jensen at Mayo Clinic?

Dr. Jensen was wonderful. I wish I had known about her first, instead of weaving my way through multiple other docs (one clinic closed, one clinic really wasn't our jam). She was ON IT and put me through the ringer, yes - but I feel was the most accurate and detailed in her diagnosis and proposed treatment of our situation (recurrent loss, unexplained infertility)

She will grill you. But it is worth it. She's nice about it and has a great sense of humor - like, you'd be happy to have a margarita with her after this crappy season of your life is over!

We went to Dr. Jensen at Mayo for a 3rd opinion - they were also the only other place who maybe would accept our insurance. She conducted a very detailed history, exam, consultation. She gave us the closest anyone could give us (legally), as to the "odds" of IVF working for our specific situation.

Mayo doesn't screw around. They are very, very serious about what they do. It was 150% worth it to drive from MSP to Rochester. You will be grilled, you will be put through the ringer, they will test everything under the sun if deemed at all necessary. Everyone in the office was always so nice. They treated you like a human being and took as much time as necessary for my care. I never felt rushed. I always left my appointments knowing exactly what was going on and my questions were always answered.

I don't remember the exact protocol but we started with Gonal-f and we started slow. There wasn't much progress at first but everyone stayed patient and continued to slowly increase my dose. We finally had a decent number of large follicles and we were ready for retrieval. We retrieved 32 follicles. I ended up with OHSS but everyone at the clinic checked up on me daily to make sure everything was going well. I was updated every step of the way. Everything went very well.

We made the trek from the Twin Cities down to Rochester for all of our appointments based on the quality of care we received from Dr. Jensen. In addition, and although you can see any of the doctors for appointments, I only scheduled my appointments with her, (though for my retrieval I didn't have any choice in the matter as they are on a schedule for retrievals). She is the type of person I respond best to - "Get $(#% Done" - but does so in a way that still comes off as compassionate and caring. I'm still in the middle of my care, but I feel like she is doing everything in her power to make it successful.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jani Jensen at Mayo Clinic?

Be straight and to the point with your objectives for care and how much (or how little) information you may want from her.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jani Jensen at Mayo Clinic?

You know when you go out on a first date and you just click with the other person? That was my experience with Dr. Jensen. She took the time to get to know my husband and me, did an amazing job of picking up on we needed from her in terms of type of information and how it was presented, made sure all of our questions were answered, suggested a second opinion from a "baby or your money back" clinic when we finally needed to be moved to IVF, and even took her lunch break to come back and talk to us during one appointment.

Describe the protocols Jani Jensen used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.

4 rounds of letrozole + timed intercourse. 3 were suggested, we did a bonus round because we were going to be out of town and couldn't do an IUI that month. 3 IUIs. We were a good candidate for this being successful given the diagnosis of unexplained infertility, quality of husband's sperm, and our overall age/health. We were given the option of doing IVF right away, but after reviewing the statistics with Dr. Jensen, 3 IUI cycles seemed like the right choice. Currently in the middle our first round of IVF. After 3 IUIs, were were told the chance of it being successful dropped significantly so we should try to be more aggressive. We were given options on meds to help with pricing, so it was a Folistim/Gonal-F + Menopur cycle, with Ganirelix for a few days before the Pregnyl trigger. Egg retrieval - 16 total, 12 mature, 10 fertilized without ICSI. ICSI is standard at Mayo for unexplained infertility, but given the additional cost and the studies I looked at (percentage of live births with/without ICSI for unexplained infertility couples with no MFI) we opted against it. Slightly elevated progesterone on the day of trigger (2.0), so the fresh transfer was cancelled and all embryos were frozen on Day 1. Next step is another consult with Dr. Jensen, then a protocol for a frozen transfer which will be 7-8 weeks out.

The regular ultrasound tech is fantastic, as is the phone staff. Anna was also a stand out for us in terms of care. One nurse had a difficult time with our first IUI, and seemed freaked out when it was not going well so she had someone else come in to finish the job (turned out to be Anna). She didn't have the same problems, which was good.

On-time appointments and the quality of care from top to bottom are fantastic. Some of the appointments for education can be a bit repetitive and seemingly useless, especially if you are traveling from out of town. That said, I also don't think they did a good job of explaining their ICSI policy to us at any point, which is an area they can improve on.

Lori Kingsley in the billing office is great, but her co-worker is terrible. Make sure you work with Lori instead. The only problems we had were failing to understand their position on ICSI -- it did not appear from our original IVF consult that it would be needed, but we were later informed it was pretty much standard. There was a disconnect between what we were told by Dr. Jensen (husband's sperm was A++++++) and what we were told by the tech that would do ICSI ("ok sperm with less than perfect morphology"). This was a bit disconcerting, and I felt as though the tech in particular wanted to do ICSI. Our own research into ICSI made it seem like an unnecessary expense. We were also unprepared for having a cancelled transfer, and received a phone call from the weekend doctor on the day of our last ultrasound and bloodwork (the day we triggered) indicating that the progesterone level was too high. I would have liked to have been informed that this was a possibility in advance of that phone call so I could better prepare myself mentally.

We used Menopur and Gonal. Did blood draws on day 3 and 5 with blood draws and ultrasounds on day 7-9. Used Cetrotide when instructed. Triggered with Novarel then underwent retrieval 72 hours later. 19 eggs were vaginally retrieved and the procedure went well.
