Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

He’s called several times just to check on us after failed cycles or when things don’t go as expected. ... He is very personable and friendly! We may not see him at every visit but I really love the NPs [Midwest Repro Center] that I see! ... For IUI we used oral meds. They explained to me that I had responded well enough to the oral meds that injectables were not necessary. We interviewed 5 clinics and they were the first ones to explain it. We’ve since moved on to IVF and he explains why we’re doing med changes and what the new meds will do
Payments are due up front then they [Midwest Reproductive Center] will file insurance and if services are covered you will receive a credit. ... Love the staff! The portal was confusing at first but they have updated it so it is more user friendly. We came prepared with questions and they didn’t disappoint us in answering them!
How was your experience with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
He is very personable and friendly! We may not see him at every visit but I really love the NPs that I see! I’m pretty sure that they’ve all been through this personally and I know they communicate with Dr.G at every step of care. He’s called several times just to check on us after failed cycles or when things don’t go as expected.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions-even if you think they’re silly!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
The entire office is so great! We’ve been with them for almost a year. I feel like they really get to know you. Dr. G gave my husband his personal cell number after our retrieval just in case we needed anything that night!

We had to pay up front then insurance covered some and we had a credit to pay for what insurance didn’t cover.
Describe Dan Gehlbach's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Midwest Reproductive Center.
They recommend single embryo transfer but provide education and ultimately leave the decision up to you

[Dr. Dan Gehlbach] Strongly suggested eSET...is a very polite individual, I just strongly question whether he communicates with his nurses prior to appointments. He never seemed to have the information talked about in our previous appointments...The weakness is communication and the new nursing staff. The doctor should not have to learn about past conversations with nurses during the next appointment. It should be noted and communicated to him following the appointment...3 IUI cycles with Clomid/letrozole and then moves straight into IVF...Make sure you are comfortable with the care you are receiving from the nurses, because you will work with them most of the time.
My husband and I absolutely loved Kim, who recently left MRC for another Fertility Clinic. She was fantastic and was the biggest reason why we chose MRC. Her and the other nurse we liked have both left in the past few months and their replacement has since argued with me and was super unprofessional during an embryo transfer. She did not pay attention during the procedure and I feel it could have negatively impacted the results...1000 for iui...17000 for ivf...Billing always went smoothly. The weakness is communication and the new nursing staff. The doctor should not have to learn about past conversations with nurses during the next appointment. It should be noted and communicated to him following the appointment.

He's [Dr. Dan Gehlbach] smart and professional. I like his personable and desire to help people. I would recommend him to treat each patient based on their past experience and not treat everyone the same, I've been through a lot before I saw him ago and he treated me like I was a brand new patient who didn't know anything about ivf, etc.... He's professional and will get the job done. It might just take a while
[Midwest Reproductive Center-Olathe's] Strength : opened during all times, communicates well, clean, lots of services available, experienced Weakness : some staff need sensitivity training, costs are pricey, needs success rates public, website needs updated... Some [of the nursing staff] were nicer than others. His NP, jonnie was not always sensitive to the nature of the situation and treated us like a number

I’m very disappointed in the level of attention given to my care. I had two embryos result and he [Dr. Gelhbach] constantly treated the first step as a “standard” treatment instead of a retrieval for a patient with advanced endometriosis and diminished ovarian reserve ... They [Midwest Reproductive Care] never mentioned my low AMH before doing any treatment.
We ended up no doing our genetic testing and asked after a few weeks that our credit go to repay part of our loan we had taken out for IVF ( we pay 14% interest on this). The last time I was there they said it was still on my account ... They [nursing staff] have always been kind, but I feel like one is constantly trying to sell me on the decided treatment plan or talk me out of my concerns with my endometriosis and dimished ovarian reserve.
How was your experience with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
I don’t feel like he has a solid understanding of female factors and infertility. If he did, he would know that you can’t treat endometriosis patients with lots of estrogen and get good results. He’d also monitor progesterone levels in a medicated cycle to help increas chances of pregnancy if patients tested low previously. I’m very disappointed in the level of attention given to my care. I had two embryos result and he constantly treated the first step as a “standard” treatment instead of a retrieval for a patient with advanced endometriosis and diminished ovarian reserve. He may have had success with other endo and DOR patients, but I am not one of them that has been able to hold my baby in my arms.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Stop treating each patient with the standard approach for the first round, you need to treat each patient with heir diagnosis in mind and the whole patient for their optimal results. The conservative approach does not work when you only have 1-2 tries for each treatment. And do not negate injectable IUIs bc they cost more than medicated IUIs. Do those extra tests and get a whole picture before going forward. You’re the expert and yet I feel like I have a better understanding of my endometriosis and diminished ovarian reserve than you do. Don’t be skeptical of stepping outside the box when the first approach does not work.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
They never mentioned my low AMH before doing any treatment. We knew before seeing them I had endometriosis, but nothing else. They constantly negated the causes and symptoms of endometriosis during treatments while only doing “standard” options. I also asked what more we could do and they didn’t give any outside resources to improve egg quality or health, just a more aggressive stim medication protocol in the hopes of getting more eggs to and therefore more embryos. They don’t fully understand female infertility and when addressing my concerns, I felt like they were talking me down from them instead of honestly understanding why I had concerns.
Describe the protocols Dan Gehlbach used in your cycles at Midwest Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
We used letrozole for all of our 7 IUIs. I had 3 mature follicles each time and my husband had very good numbers. Because we always had a good response, they did not want to change to dosage or protocol. I took it beginning on day 3 for 5 days and then went in around day 11/12 for an ultrasound to check follicle response and do a trigger 24-36 hours before the IUI. For the first retrieval we did 10 days of 225 menopur, 225 follistim, added in ganirelix injections after day 5/6, and a lupron trigger. I only had 7 mature follicles, but all 6 eggs they retrieved were mature, all fertilized with ICSI, and then none of them made it to blastocyst by day 6. For our second retrieval we did a “poor responders protocol” for 300 menopur, 300 follistim, microdose lupron twice daily, and a growth hormone. We did a double trigger after 11 days of stims after they added an additional day. We had 9 eggs retrieved, 7 were mature, and while 5 fertilized with ICSI, just 2 made it to blastocyst by day 6. We decided to not do genetic testing. For the first FET, I took estradiol 3 times daily and then after 2.5 weeks, they did an ultrasound to check my lining and added in 10ml PIO injections once a day and 100 mg endometrin twice daily the following day. After 5 days of PIO, we did our transfer of a 5AA embryo. We had a negative beta blood test. The next cycle we did a mock one for an ERA test and endometrial biopsy for inflammation. The ERA showed I needed another day of PIO, but no inflammation was present. We attempted another FET, but because I was in estradiol for over 4 weeks, my body decided I needed to have a period and we had to cancel our transfer. I had big concerns about the long time on estradiol, but was talked through the steps they would take to make sure my lining was healthy for transfer. After a 16 day, very heavy period and 7 days of oral progesterone, we prepped for another transfer. I did the same doses of meds as the first, but added the extra day of progesterone after my second lining check. We had a positive beta at 85, but after 72 hours my hcg level was only at 135 and by the next beta 48 hours later my level had dropped to 100. The following beta confirmed a loss at 26 and I went back one more time to follow my levels down to under 5. We have our follow up on Friday and I consider myself still under his care.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Midwest Reproductive Center.
They have always been kind, but I feel like one is constantly trying to sell me on the decided treatment plan or talk me out of my concerns with my endometriosis and dimished ovarian reserve. But they are always nice and cordial to talk with over the phone or in person.
Describe your experience with Midwest Reproductive Center.
The standard approach is not ideal. Does it work? Somewhat and sometimes. Do they need to investigate more about each patient before deciding on a course of treatment, yes. We ended up no doing our genetic testing and asked after a few weeks that our credit go to repay part of our loan we had taken out for IVF ( we pay 14% interest on this). The last time I was there they said it was still on my account, not following through makes me feel as though they didn’t fully understand my request.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center.
Each IUI we had to pay $380 for the IUI treatment and then $100 for the trigger shot. The oral letrozole was $10-$15 each cycle and our labs and ultrasound were covered by our insurance with a co pay after deductible. Our IVF cycles we took our a cycle package for 2 retrievals and up to 4 transfers for $20,000 and financed it through another company, ARC and NBT Bank. We paid $5,600 for our first cycle stim meds, $8,200 for our stims meds and medications for the second retrieval. Our estradiol and birth control were all covered by my insurance and only cost us $5 each cycle. Our PIO cost $90 for a 20 day supply, the endometrin cost $95 for a 28 day supply. None of our diagnostic testing was covered and we paid $96-$900 for each over the course of 3 years.
Describe Dan Gehlbach's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Midwest Reproductive Center.
I appreciate the single transfer because the ultimate goal is one healthy baby and if you transfer a healthy embryo, it may split into twins already. Double that and it’s quads.
What specific things went wrong at Midwest Reproductive Center?
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Midwest Reproductive Center.
They didn’t look at the blood test the time before and I had to be poked twice, though this was after I asked about the tests the nurse mentioned. As well, they don’t post lab results and instead say, “No news is good news”, what if I want to know what my levels are? Post them to the portal with an easy click if a phone call takes too much time. I previously mentioned a credit issue to repay a portion of our loan by the clinic coordinator. They also did not tell me what happened with my failed FET prep cycle that I got my period instead and had to cancel my transfer. When they say they don’t have to change a thing and it may be successful, that’s not comforting after a failed treatment and limited retrievals or embryos.

Dr. Gehlbach and his staff always made us feel like they cared. They always addressed us by name and seemed to always know who we were. Dr. Gehlbach remembered every detail of our last treatment, plan, etc every time I saw him, instead of having to look at a computer in front of me to look up that information....For IVF, his office chooses a freeze-all cycle to minimize risks of complications of OHSS after retrieval to help your body recover to make it a healthy environment to accept embryos.
The clinic [Midwest Reproductive Center] has two locations (Olathe KS, and north KC office). Major procedures such as egg retrieval, embryo transfer are done at Olathe office....Dr. Gehlbach has a staff of wonderful nurse practitioners that perform the monitoring appointments for IVF/IUI as well as perform the IUI procedures. They are all friendly and caring!...I believe each IUI was ballpark $600. IVF was around $1500 down payment if I remember correctly...
How was your experience with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
He was very open with us right from the beginning that IUI probably wouldn't work for us, and recommended we do IVF right away. When I stated I didn't feel comfortable diving right into IVF and wanted to try IUI first, he didn't shame me or make me feel like I was making the wrong decision after he had told me it probably wouldn't work for us (it didn't.) after our first IVF unexpectedly ended in a chemical pregnancy, we sat down and had a meeting as to possible reasons why the cycle had resulted that way. Instead of giving me the "well, sometimes it just doesn't work" speech, he already had a plan of additional testing he suggested to get to the root of the problem. When I also opened up discussion about further testing I was interested in, he was very agreeable to my suggestions. The additional testing we discussed showed diagnoses that were preventing our IVF from being successful. After fixing those problems, our second FET was successful! I had to have a surgical endometrial biopsy and hysteroscopy done as part of the additional testing, and he even gave my husband his personal cell number to call in case I had any complications once we got home after surgery. He is very personable and I really, truly felt like he cared about helping us realize our dream of becoming parents.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Choose him! His office and staff are amazing, from the secretary all the way up to Dr. Gehlbach himself.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Dr. Gehlbach and his staff always made us feel like they cared. They always addressed us by name and seemed to always know who we were. Dr. Gehlbach remembered every detail of our last treatment, plan, etc every time I saw him, instead of having to look at a computer in front of me to look up that information.
Describe the protocols Dan Gehlbach used in your cycles at Midwest Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Both of our IUIs were with letrozole, with HCG trigger 36 hours beforehand, with 21D progesterone check to ensure I had ovulated. For IVF, his office chooses a freeze-all cycle to minimize risks of complications of OHSS after retrieval to help your body recover to make it a healthy environment to accept embryos. The drugs used for stims were folistim, ganirelex, menopur. (It's been a while since our retrieval, so hard to remember the specifics) I also believe there was one dose of an antibiotic involved before retrieval. Monitoring was every 2-3 days to monitor follicle growth and check e2 levels. Medications were adjusted according to how rapidly e2 levels were rising. For FET, the drugs were baby aspirin daily (taken until first ultrasound confirms heartbeat), estradiol tablets 3x/day (continued through 10 weeks of pregnancy), and closer to/after FET, Progesterone IM shots and crinone vaginal gel (progesterone) daily through 10 weeks of pregnancy.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Midwest Reproductive Center.
Dr. Gehlbach has a staff of wonderful nurse practitioners that perform the monitoring appointments for IVF/IUI as well as perform the IUI procedures. They are all friendly and caring!
Describe your experience with Midwest Reproductive Center.
The clinic has two locations (Olathe KS, and north KC office). Major procedures such as egg retrieval, embryo transfer are done at Olathe office. I didn't mind seeing nurse practitioners for IUI appointments or IVF monitoring appointments, but I figure that could be a potential draw back for some people who would prefer to see the physician at each appointment. Everyone in his offices are very friendly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center.
My insurance does not cover any part of fertility treatments, so most costs were OOP (my insurance would cover lab draws and monitoring appointments, but not the actual procedures). I believe each IUI was ballpark $600. IVF was around $1500 down payment if I remember correctly, $4500 for medications, around $3000 for genetic testing (optional) and we financed around $8000 through ARC that ended up covering both FETs and some additional unforeseen testing
Describe Dan Gehlbach's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Midwest Reproductive Center.
Dr. Gehlbach very strongly preferred single embryo transfer. Our first FET, we chose single embryo transfer (resulted in chemical pregnancy). For our second FET, Dr. Gehlbach very strongly recommended we transfer one embryo again, but said he would be open to transferring two given our history, so we chose two embryos for our second FET.

Gehlbach seems like a good doctor. He is willing to try different things but it's almost like you have to suggest it...Treatment seemed like it was up to me what was done rather than how do we maximize our chances....The whole infertility process is frustrating since they don't do much investigating unless you are going in for IVF which we weren't ready for at the time.... The strategy was basically to use oral meds with IUI.
The clinics staff [Midwest Reproductive Clinic] were very friendly and compassionate. I can't complain about how the clinic is set up or the staff....They [Nurses] were who I dealt with any time I came in. They showed a lot of compassion and were very friendly....Gehlbach seems like a good doctor. How was your experience with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Gehlbach seems like a good doctor. He is willing to try different things but it's almost like you have to suggest it rather than the Clinic. The whole infertility process is frustrating since they don't do much investigating unless you are going in for IVF which we weren't ready for at the time. It would be helpful if they did look into the causes so you know whether or not IVF has a decent shot of working. I had to suggest blood tests and surgery when I started having pains.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Only go here for IUI
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center?
Treatment seemed like it was up to me what was done rather than how do we maximize our chances. As I'm not a medical doctor, it shouldn't be on my shoulders.
Describe the protocols Dan Gehlbach used in your cycles at Midwest Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
The strategy was basically to use oral meds with IUI. I felt like the IUIs were done too early at times and not timed properly. I pretty much decided whether we'd use Clomid or Letrozole. After three cycles of using meds, they brought me in to tell me I'd need IVF.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Midwest Reproductive Center.
They were who I dealt with any time I came in. They showed a lot of compassion and were very friendly.

Dr. Gehlbach has great bedside manner. Very calm and collected. Gives you all the info you need up front. You will see a lot of nurse practitioners though. I only saw Dr. Gehlbach a few times while doing IUI's. When I moved to IVF I saw him more...With embryo transfers we used estradiol pills, endometrin, and progesterone in oil. 9 days after a transfer you receive a blood pregnancy test.
This clinics [Midwest Reproductive Center] strength is the staff. So kind and compassionate. I've always felt cared for whether it was the nurses or doctors...You will see a lot of nurse practitioners...A weakness is communication. It is really hard to get a nurse on the phone. Not the front desk. I had the best luck with the online portal...Embryo transfers are $3,500 not including meds. Egg retrieval was around $15,000.

When I had graduated from my fertility clinic, I had a scare at 10.5 weeks. My OB couldn't get me in so I called Dr. Gehlbach. He saw me immediately!

Dr. Gelbach was good about making sure my wife and I felt knowledgeable in the subject area of infertility. He was good about communicating potential risks and potential outcomes of each procedure. He also made us feel cared about whenever we would visit and he would make it a point to come visit with us. ... The more questions we asked, the more he would dig into the information.
The clinic [Midwest Reproductive Center] does a good job of communicating. They also do a good job of making you feel like everything you are going through is "normal." The only weakness for us was having to go to two different sites for appointments. ... The whole staff was very personable and professional. They made us feel welcome and cared for. ...

Describe your experience with Midwest Reproductive Center.
The clinic does a good job of communicating. They also do a good job of making you feel like everything you are going through is "normal." The only weakness for us was having to go to two different sites for appointments. The North Kansas City office is much closer to our home than the one in Kansas, where the actual transfers took place.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Dan Gehlbach at Midwest Reproductive Center.
All I can specifically remember is the whole process is quite expensive.
