Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

He [Dr. Jain] was great he draws pictures to make sure you understand, he send you MyChart messages, 24 hour turnaround time for questions most times it was within hours, he listened to concerns, he’s opened for discussion...I didn’t have a baseline, so he started me off with gonal f 300, then I wasn’t moving like he wanted so he increased my med to 450, I was only able to produce 3 follicles, after a couple of days with those 3 he told me to start ganirelix the follicles grew but not big enough so I decided to end the cycle and start another one... I feel confident this time because Dr have a baseline to work with

She [Dr. Eve Feinberg] is very blunt and doesn’t sugar coat things- which I appreciated. She is also very realistic. She helped to set realistic expectations. Sometimes I wonder if we should have tried an additional cycle before moving to donor eggs but we could never afforded it.... Being DOR- I was pushed pretty hard with drugs. The first try at IVF resulted in 3 follicles so the cycles was converted to IUI. The second try only had two follicles- So we cancelled and did not do an IUI because later discovered a Male Factor. These cancellations saved us a lot of money.
The clinic [Northwestern Medicine- Chicago] is nice- clean, relatively friendly, etc. It seems to be a bit cheaper than many of the other Chicago clinics. Billing can be frustrating and I kept having to call and reiterate things, but they were going through some staffing changes. Plus, it is super close to public transit since it is downtown.... Stacey was my favorite- I don’t think she was a nurse but she did most of my appointments. (Saline sonograms, etc)

She [Dr. Karen Altay] has very limited hours of seeing patients. MWF 8-2pm. This wasn't communicated until we did 2 months of tests...We thought she just saw patients during regular business hours, not the half days. As a result we'll have to look elsewhere for IUIs... Lots of testing but not a lot of results that were discussed...seems as though the dr has a plan towards retirement with reduced working hour
Blood tests [at would be complete and I would receive the results in a web portal but the dr wouldn't call/meet with me until CD 1. I hoped to talk about the results to make a plan right away, but the staff screened me from the dr so I had to wait a couple weeks just to get the results 'read'...Small clinic, nice small staff. Weaknesses: seems as though the dr has a plan towards retirement with reduced working hours...$900 out of pocket each month before starting any service.
How was your experience with Karen Altay at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
She has very limited hours of seeing patients. MWF 8-2pm. This wasn't communicated until we did 2 months of tests. I don't think anyone can get pregnant if they don't do IUIs outside of that area. We thought she just saw patients during regular business hours, not the half days. As a result we'll have to look elsewhere for IUIs.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Karen Altay at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Limited hours, limited chances of getting pregnant.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Karen Altay at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
She was thorough on the medical side of things.
Describe the protocols Karen Altay used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Tests included: FemVue with transvaginal ultrasound, ABO/RH, Prolactin, STD, AmH, Comp Metabolic panel. Lots of testing but not a lot of results that were discussed.

They were good about keeping in touch and trying to be a good liaison between the dr and myself. Remembered my name and spouse's name.

I spent much more time with the nurses than with Dr. Barnes, but I felt like he was always friendly and helpful and knew what he was talking about. He laid out short- and long-term plans for treatment, so I knew what to expect...I believe I took letrazole with a shot each time- the plan was to do this for 3 cycles and then continue but with IUI added. We got pregnant the third time around.
It really was just that sometimes the nurses [at Northwestern] didn't know where I was at in a cycle or gave me conflicting information about say, how many treatments I had left until I moved on to IUI. We were always able to sort it out through MyChart though...The clinic was really beautiful and serene, and there was an order to it that made me feel like they had done this many times before (in a good way).

I really liked Dr. Marsh, but the majority of the care provided was done by her Fellow or her team of nurses. Once the care plan was established, we had very little contact with her. While I liked her as a person, we were frustrated by her one size fits all approach to inseminations and we were not given the opportunity to adjust my meds based on my results.
Clinic was clean and organized. The lab is located within the office making the sperm prep very easy on the insemination day....Costs were very straightforward and through the main Northwestern billing portal....The nursing staff ranged in compassion, skill, and communication. Some of the nurses were amazing and were nice to work with and other nurses seemed annoyed by my existence.

Ask questions and be prepared to hear the truth. He [Dr. Edmond Confino] told me that if I was unable to become pregnant in three months that there was a problem. I listened to everything he told me to do and felt comfortable with out three month plan of IUI with and without drugs. I got pregnant at 39 after the first IUI...As a single woman wanting to have a child, he was supportive and nonjudgmental. He explained his plan for my age of 39 and we agreed on a time schedule. I felt he was honest with me and that I was in great hands.

It was 16 years ago but I do remember a little bit. As I was only allowed to purchase four vials of donor sperm from the donor I selected, I wanted to follow all the rules. The plan was to do one insemination with without drugs, one month with clomid and then two the last month with clomid or another drug. I went in for an ultrasound on day ?, had an injection of profasi and came back a day or two later for the IUI. I went on to have a perfect pregnancy and healthy baby

Dr Kim was nice but felt she didn’t take the time to get to know us on a personal level. ... Dr Kim knows seems to know her stuff. ... She powered through results, never stopping to ask what we thought or felt comfortable with. She pushed IVF and wanted to get treatment started right after the consultation. It felt somewhat pushy and sales-like during a really hard time ... She did not show compassion and getting to know us as a couple and what treatment plans we felt comfortable with ... Dr Kim came in and powered through the consultation. It felt very scientific, blunt, and impersonal ...
Nice clinic [Northwestern Medicine] but will continue to research others in the area. Seemed more like a business where they pushed IVF heavily. Initial consultation appointment was very expensive. We decided not to go back as it didn’t feel like the right fit ... [nursing staff] Nice and compassionate ... Very expensive. We were shocked by the consultation fee when we have excellent insurance

I had to go through two Ivf cycles [with Dr. Feinberg], both unsuccessful ( because of mine and my husband's complicated fertility issues). I don't know if she did her best. Most of the times, our only way of communication was through an app. Maybe if I have had to see her more often, I would've been more confident. Anyway, she treated me with compassion. She is a good doctor, knowing what she has to do. And I would recommend her to my friends.
NW is probably the biggest hospital/ clinic in Chicago area, and all the staff is high level. Every time I've been there during the last year, I received good and warm experience. ...he [Dr. Confino] diagnosed me with PCOS, which I thought I had for about a year, and then when I saw another doctor at Northwestern I found I never actually had it...He has a wonderful reputation but due to his accent I couldn't understand a lot of what he was saying, especially on the telephone...Make sure his nurse is there so she can repeat anything that you didn't understand...
Northwestern didn't have the long lines in the morning that FCI had, which I know friends described as more of a cattle call. I had a very positive experience with him [Dr. Barnes]. He has a warm demeanor and is knowledgeable. In my opinion, he is very optimistic about treatment (which is a nice-to-have through this process). I did felt like at a certain point when IUI wasn't working, I was leading the process rather than getting answers about next steps...
I don't know if it is still this way [at Northwestern Medicine - Chicago], but when I went through the process, there weren't individual appointment times for monitoring. So people would start to line up in the hallway before the clinic opened (before we all had to go to work). It had a little bit of a cattle call feeling that was stressful...

Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and competent, but sometimes it didn't feel like she listened to why we were pursuing these specific fertility services. She seems less versed in LGBTQ+ care and somewhat unwilling to understand the ways in which gender identity may influence a person's decision to be pregnant or not...We are doing reciprocal IVF, meaning my spouse was going to have her eggs retrieved to freeze embryos that would then be transferred to me
Northwestern is a high-volume practice, so be prepared to keep track of what should be happening and when—you are ultimately responsible for your care. It's very much like an assembly line, and despite bragging about their LGBTQ+ bona fides, the forms are heteronormative and no effort has been made to make them more inclusive.
How was your experience with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and competent, but sometimes it didn't feel like she listened to why we were pursuing these specific fertility services. She seems less versed in LGBTQ+ care and somewhat unwilling to understand the ways in which gender identity may influence a person's decision to be pregnant or not.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
If it's important to you, be confident in how you'd like to approach things. Dr. Kim won't lead you astray, but you may need to advocate for yourself a bit.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Helen Kim at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Kim is knowledgeable and has excellent credentials. However, at times it felt like she was unwilling to acknowledge our specific situation. We are doing reciprocal IVF, meaning my spouse was going to have her eggs retrieved to freeze embryos that would then be transferred to me. My spouse has low ovarian reserve, and several times Dr. Kim suggested that my spouse simply get pregnant because the likelihood of my spouse being able to get and stay pregnant was likely better than the likelihood of retrieving enough eggs for fertilization. My spouse has no interest in being pregnant. If it had come up only once, I don't think I would have been as bothered by it, but it came up several times. The practice itself is a high volume practice, and there were several occasions where labs or diagnostics weren't ordered accurately or at all, leading to delays in care.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.

Describe Helen Kim's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
No strong preference, but it ended up not being relevant to us because we had only one embryo to freeze.
What specific things went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to order appropriate test
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
They failed to order appropriate tests and call in the medication at one point. It didn't impact the outcome, but it added to an already stressful situation and degraded our faith in the medical team.

Dr. Jain is incredibly kind and has a bedside manner that makes you feel welcome...was patient and always will to discuss journal articles I shared with him, and even talked to the director of labs at NW after I wanted certain draws and tests done...His research interest is equity in reproductive health
[Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] Incredibly organized, efficient times and turn around for labs. Nice facilities (can't be the Lake Michigan view). Solid billing processes. Can often feel like a number. MyChart communication encouraged, so often speaking with nurses rather than provider.
How was your experience with Tarun Jain at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Jain is incredibly kind and has a bedside manner that makes you feel welcome. I was a puzzle for him as scores and scores of testing were'normal' yet I continued to miscarry. After my first miscarriage under their care, he wanted to do the d&c and following my next pregnancy, made sure he was doing the ultrasound scan. As I was scouring medical journals and doing my own research (which all doctor's love), Dr. Jain was patient and always will to discuss journal articles I shared with him, and even talked to the director of labs at NW after I wanted certain draws and tests done. While ultimately it was not possible, I appreciated Dr. Jain's willingness to advocate for me. His research interest is equity in reproductive health, so that alone can tell you the sort of doctor -and person - he is
Describe the protocols Tarun Jain used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
My only treatment protocols were progesterone and Lovenox. I was a medical mystery, diagnosed with recurrent miscarriages and unexplained loss (2 missed miscarriages, a miscarriage in the 2nd trimester, and 2 chemical pregnancies: I was 5 for 5 on attempts at natural conception, I just couldn't keep them alive and no one seemed to know why. I was under his care for 2 miscarriages and one chemical pregnancy). He was willing to try IVF as during one of my miscarriage tested positive for a chromosomal abnormality, thinking IVF had a potential to avoid that situation, but would not necessarily address the whole failing thrive in my uterus thing... I appreciated this willingness though.

My husband and I were advised to complete genetic testing of our embryos and paid for the service. Genetic testing never occurred. How was your experience with Christina E. Boots at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
My husband and I were advised to complete genetic testing of our embryos and paid for the service. Genetic testing never occurred. After the fact, Dr. Boots indicated my embryos were too fragile; however, this was never told to myself or my husband until the mistake was made. Since it did not occur, we were required to re-open an emotional wound and try for the embryo transfer which ultimately was unsuccessful.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Christina E. Boots at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Make sure she writes everything down for you and you have a copy. Do not trust her word.
Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Make sure everything is written down and you have a copy. They do not stick to their word. As mentioned, we were advised and paid for our embryos to be tested and this did not occur. All would have been avoided if protocol had been followed. Nowhere in my records does indicate my embryos were not to be genetically tested, Northwestern chose to blame it on COVID and being behind on reimbursing me on payments made. I did not receive payment until I found out my embryos were not genetically tested and seeked reimbursement. If you try a different fertility, you will immediately see where NW falls short. Save your stress and visit a clinic which cares about its patients.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
Cattle call, had to get there super early, wait in line. COVID hit and they started scheduling appointments which made it easier. Would not be allowed to get lab work at the clinic if I was getting blood draw only which was ridiculous.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Christina E. Boots at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
IVF - $10K out of pocket plus drugs, FET - $5K out of pocket plus drugs, bloodwork and monitoring. Genetic testing was between $2-3K which never happened. Billing there is a nightmare.
What specific things went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
My embryos were suppose to be genetically tested and they were not. My husband and I had to go through the process of a FET because of this error. The emotional toll and additional financial burden was not a concern to Northwestern.

Be very up front with what you want to be considered [with Dr. Jared Robins]. If you want full hormone panels regularly you will need to ask up front. If you want to look into complimentary efforts such as diet, acupuncture, supplements you'll need to enlist a separate provider for that...he is very warm, knowledgeable and personable. Over the 8 months of treatment I haven only met with Dr. Robins initially, and then again to proceed with IUI about 4 months in...Progesterone suppositories were advised right away, though no underlying need had been identified. Clomid was then prescribed but not much in the way of a heads up on how it would impact my cycle. The team that prepped in the week leading up to the IUI were extremely helpful. I did an IUI cycle without Clomid, just the trigger shot, as I'm wary of further messing with my cycle.

How was your experience with Jared Robins at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
I'm not sure whether portal care is the norm for infertility treatment. If it is not, then I would recommend another practice. Northwestern boasts strong result rates but the practice is so full that there isn't much individualized care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jared Robins at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Jared Robins at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
The two visits I have had with Dr. Robins he is very warm, knowledgeable and personable. Over the 8 months of treatment I haven only met with Dr. Robins initially, and then again to proceed with IUI about 4 months in. The nursing team at Northwestern Fertility Specialists are helpful and personable but nearly all exchanges are through the online portal. The practice is extremely busy and full so there aren't many opportunities for in person visits, though great when they do happen, the majority of care and interaction happens through the patient portal.
Describe the protocols Jared Robins used in your cycles at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.

Describe your experience with Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine.
The practice is a well oiled machine. They get so many women in and out in a very efficient amount of time. The practice is well staffed, lots of rooms, always sure to process women in the early mornings very quickly for blood and ultrasounds - regularly in under 30 minutes.

She [Dr. Eve Feinberg] is wonderful and warm - she remembered us personally, our journey, and always kept our specific goals as the focus...We loved her. She is extremely skilled and communicates well. I got OHSS, and she was calm and handled it in a way that kept me from panicking. We had a wonderful experience, even though IVF was hard, and she was always available for a visit or call when I needed...Ask questions when you have them - she’ll answer them!...always felt warmly welcomed. Plus, they really run on time!...with one exception: Melissa, a nurse practitioner who often spoke before thinking or being fully aware of a situation, which led to more than one stressful situation)
Claire [nurse at Northwestern Medicine] was so wonderful, reassuring, and enthusiastic. The entire nursing staff was fantastic (with one exception: Melissa, a nurse practitioner who often spoke before thinking or being fully aware of a situation, which led to more than one stressful situation)...Melissa often didn’t seem to know what was going on and provided bad information that conflicted with what others said or conflicted with my chart relating to embryo freezing process, medications, and post-retrieval care...Organized, quiet, clean, friendly desk staff, easy scheduling, not a crazy waiting room, easy parking. The only downside of being treated in the suburbs is having to go into the city for weekend monitoring, which is a very different experience, and for retrievals themselves. But we lived our clinic and always felt warmly welcomed. Plus, they really run on time!

Although Dr Pavone is not warm and fuzzy but she's extremely smart, knowledgeable and highly skilled at what she does. Her understanding and knowledge is not just limited to her field of Reproductive Endocrinology but in fact she has very strong general medical knowledge as well...She quoted guidelines and evidence based data and recommended eSET...
Overall, they [Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine] have a great team there, a well oiled machine...Very evidence based. Protocols are guided by objective data. They are uptodate on the latest guidelines. They are really at par, if not ahead of, with the latest guidelines. How was your experience with Mary Ellen Pavone at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Although Dr Pavone is not warm and fuzzy but she's extremely smart, knowledgeable and highly skilled at what she does. Her understanding and knowledge is not just limited to her field of Reproductive Endocrinology but in fact she has very strong general medical knowledge as well. Northwestern's success rate is not as high as some other clinics and one of the reasons is that they see more complex patients who have already been at other clinics in the Chicago area. Overall, they have a great team there, a well oiled machine.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Mary Ellen Pavone at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?

[Dr. Mary Ellen Pavone] strength is asking all the right questions for symptoms and life progression in fertility. Her weakness was not communicating after a tragic miscarriage which made me so sad...Not much of a warm conversation but hopefully we will soon....Please ask as many questions as you possibly can...I just took fertility shots
Positive energy for this practice [Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine]...I loved the staff and the way they remembered my name and asked how I was feeling...Just a warm communication follow ups and resources on income to help with medication. I would have preferred to be contacted on how the medication was while taking it and checking if I needed a change in medication
How was your experience with Mary Ellen Pavone at Northwestern Fertility & Reproductive Medicine?
Her strength is asking all the right questions for symptoms and life progression in fertility. Her weakness was not communicating after a tragic miscarriage which made me so sad. I did not know what to expect in a miscarriage and how it was going to make me feel emotionally. I would have liked that warm feeling of support and compassion because this is a sensitive topic and life process.

Please ask as many questions as you possibly can and tell the doctor how your relationship between you and your husband want with her on this journey in making a family.

He [Dr. Jain] conducted a thorough examination and provided clear instructions and recommendations for our game plan. We only met him once at our initial consultation back in January but he came highly recommend by my gynecologist. ... Since we had already been trying to conceive for a year, had 5 months of clomid and one failed IUI without a positive pregnancy test he laid out a game plan to switch to letrozole for three months before discussing IVF.
This clinic [Northwestern Medicine] operates as a well oiled machine. It’s startling to see so many women at the office on the same journey they they all seem well taken care of. They have flexible house for monitoring appointments for blood draws and ultrasounds. Makes it easy to fit appointments into my schedule. I also love that they primarily communicate through MyChart app. No missed phone calls and it’s easy to review their written instructions and be reminded of appointments.
