This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
he [Dr. Herbert] connected with me, wanted me to be successful, was completely honest about my odds and yet was rooting for me the entire time...He was also very compassionate and caring. He also thought outside of the box, learned from my first canceled cycle and was successful the second time. Where other doctors would have stopped he kept going and tried...is direct and to the pony. This may not be for everyone. I personally really liked it.
With drugs a cycle was about $15,000 [at Pacific Fertility Center] but that did not include genetic testing...PFC is very professional, organized and efficient. I loved my whole experience there! Everyone from the ladies who check you in, to the financial coordinators to the lab staff was excellent. They all went out of their way to help me...Both Kat and Marris went above and beyond to care for me by checking in, offering emotional support, emails, phone calls, getting me free stim drugs bc my stim cycles were so long.

Describe Carl Herbert (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
We did multiple embryo transfer for both. He let me make a decision I was comfortable with.
My husband and I were so pleased with the first consultation. Dr Li listened to our journey, made suggestions and always respect our feelings. My husband likes to have an analytical response on the probability outcomes and Dr. Li always gave him great answers...As a patient, I always felt that Dr. Li was there for me. We could schedule a phone call with her anytime we wanted to discuss something important, and the most difficult times, when i had the miscarriages she always took time to talk to us. She respected that i wanted to have a little time until i would feel better but at the time she would talk to her I felt the comfort that she knew what i was going thru and she cared for me.
At Pacific fertility center you always do talk to a human being and to make the first consultation appointment as well as any other appointment with your Doctor, Counselor etc. I am very impressed of how efficient the Clinic is 2. The Clinic is very clean and have an amazing decoration, you don't feel you are in the middle of a hospital. 3. While wait in the reception to be called, the view of the pier is incredible, there are lots of magazines for you to pick one and read, the music is very relaxing and you can get a hot beverage as well...
How was your experience with Liyun Li at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
As a patient, I always felt that Dr. We would talk about what happened, and we would do other test like Endometrial Receptivity Array and other blood test to check Immune system issue etc. I always felt so much better after talking to Dr Li. After the transfer of my last embryo and an unsuccessful pregnancy, we had to think what to do. For my surprise, my company announced that our insurance plan added the Infertility treatment but unfortunately PFC is not in the insurance list clinics. The last call that we had with Dr. Li i was in tears and Dr Li said that my dream is the first priority that she will support me and understood that i have to choose another clinic because of the insurance coverage. Dr. Li is an amazing professional but also a wonderful human being. We always had her support and compassion in the years of our journey at PFC.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Liyun Li at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Dr. Li has lots of knowledge about the infertility issues. Make sure to schedule the appointments either in person or via phone. Make a list of all your questions because she will answer all of them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Liyun Li at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
In 2014, we decided to choose another Infertility clinic because we were going to move out from Texas and relocate to the Bay Area. After doing some research online, I liked the reviews of Pacific Fertility Center in San Francisco. I had no idea which doctor to pick and when i called to make an appointment on the day that we were available in SF it was Dr Liyun Li who was available. My husband and I were so pleased with the first consultation. Dr Li listened to our journey, made suggestions and always respect our feelings. My husband likes to have an analytical response on the probability outcomes and Dr. Li always gave him great answers. For instance , i had tried for the second time to retrieve my own eggs and check whether we could have a day 5 blastocyst, i knew that being over 40 it would be difficult but we wanted to try. We had a long conversation with Dr. Li about the results. Dr Li. explained every detail and always answered any question we had. When Dr. Li told us that we could still continue to try to retrieve my own eggs because we could get a good quality egg but it would take around 10 or more egg retrievals, she spoke my husbands language, giving us an explanation in the statistic way. We love Dr. Li and we will always be grateful that we had an opportunity to have her as our RE doctor.
Describe the protocols Liyun Li used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
I had 4 embryos - day 5 blastocyst and the protocol used was :
1. Ultrasound and blood test on the 2nd or 3rd day of the cycle
2. Start Delestrogene shots -every 2 or 3 days -0.2 ml
3. after 10 days ultrasound and blood test
4. Start Progesterone - Ethyl oleate 1 ml - 5 days prior to Embryo transfer
5. Emnbryo transfer after 5 days of Progesterone shots
6. Continue shots of progesterone every day, and delestrogene 2 x week
7 . after 9 days, blood test HCG Beta
8. if positive continue with progesterone and delestrogene until reach week 9
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
I don't know how i would survived without the Dr Lis Care team.
When I had just a random question, i would send them an email and i always got a response on the same day. When i started to bleed when i was pregnant the nurse would call me in less than an hour and I could make an appointment if I felt something was wrong.
I will always be grateful for a special nurse : Lindsay. She is my hero. She used to send me cards by mail, I used to cry with a smile on my face and felt so much happiness when reading her words. She was always checking on me after a negative HCG or a miscarriage and i felt a lot of comfort by having her there at PFC
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
I had to do research while I lived in Texas and here in the San Francisco area and i have to say that Pacific Fertility clinic is really a top on the service. Find below my points.
1. When you choose a new Infertility clinic and you are a new patient, usually you have to talk to a central office or a different number of the clinic. I experienced that i had to answer a questionnaire and leave a detail message on the answering machine, lots of clinics don't answer and you never talk to a human being to make the first consultation, HOWEVER at Pacific fertility center you always do talk to a human being and to make the first consultation appointment as well as any other appointment with your Doctor, Counselor etc. I am very impressed of how efficient the Clinic is
2. The Clinic is very clean and have an amazing decoration, you don't feel you are in the middle of a hospital.
3. While wait in the reception to be called, the view of the pier is incredible, there are lots of magazines for you to pick one and read, the music is very relaxing and you can get a hot beverage as well
4. I had to change the clinic and i need to send historical data , letter from the Counselor etc, i am still sending emails to PFC requesting documents and they are always in contact with me sending me what i need to proceed to the other clinic
Describe the costs associated with your care under Liyun Li at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).

Describe Liyun Li's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
I hear a lot of debates regarding to eSET and multiple, but my reaction about just do a eSET was positive, since the goal of the treatment is to have a health baby and a health mom, which for me it's sufficient to approve the eSET

I was diagnosed with annovulation a and possible PCOS. I had tried letrozole for several months prior to seeing Dr. Ryan (with my ob/gyn). We tried IUI with letrozole twice without any success. I then had a very successful egg retrieval (34) and had the eggs tested and then frozen (20). We then did the first transfer with only a brief chemical pregnancy, but the second time it worked and I'm now 10 Weeks pregnant.

I can't [remember] if Dr Givens or another dr harvested my eggs. I had such great results and felt so comfortable overall there that it didn't matter. I've met with her twice recently to discuss next steps (turning my frozen eggs into embryos and implantation to become pregnant) and she is open to answering any and all questions I have and new information I may have read up on that she hasn't heard about yet...things are happening quickly in this field.
You are going almost daily if not daily for a week when your eggs are growing and I think I saw a different dr [at Pacific Fertility Center] each day for the sonogram. I liked all but one. Her bedside manner was nonexistent and I think she laughed at one of my questions in a scoffing manner. I already felt like an alien growing eggs and full of hormone shots so I didn't need this dr I had never met acting that way. I gave that feedback during my "exit interview" after my eggs were frozen. T

I already felt like an alien growing eggs and full of hormone shots so I didn't need this dr I had never met acting that way. I can't rem if Dr Givens or another dr harvested my eggs. I had such great results and felt so comfortable overall there that it didn't matter. Ask a lot of questions and do your research. For the egg retrieval portion, it's pretty straightforward and takes up a month of your life. I've found that it's better to talk to as many people as possible when moving forward with the rest of the IVF process. There are many more moving parts and things to know.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Carolyn Givens at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
PFC does a lot of business. That's just a fact and it's obvious when you're in the office and when you call in. This is not really your friendly neighborhood doctors office with just your Dr or a couple docs, it's a practice and a center with a lot going on. I like that it was this way. It feels both high end (makes you think modern and successful in producing live births) and super professional.
Describe the protocols Carolyn Givens used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
The drugs I took were Follistim, Menopur, Ganirelix and HCG. I ended up going for a couple more days to let the eggs get even bigger so I needed more Menopur which I was able to pick up at the office (PFC). They keep drugs on hand for this last minute purpose as the rest comes in the mail ahead of your cycle. I ended up with 28 eggs retrieved and 22 were frozen. Given my age at the time of 39.5, I would have to think her protocol worked well.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: I had a team and email stream with team on it. )
I don't think I had a specific nurse, but I did have a coordinator and team assigned to me. I was able to email my team specifically so the best person could always pick up my question and respond. When you are in your cycle, you are always able to reach someone and get really fast service. I think they work weekends. When I called after hours, a dr called me right back to answer my question.
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
Strengths: professional, discreet, convenient location to get in and out of, highly qualified doctors, the office feels brand new, fancy fertility lab onsite surrounded by glass so you can see them when leaving, their own egg donation center across the hall from their offices, very responsive when you are an active patient, nice nurses and doctors, your own financial contact who handles your payments and answers any questions you may have.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Carolyn Givens at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
I think my total fees for egg retrieval in 2014 was $12,000. That included all of my drugs. I think the finance person grossly underestimated how much my drugs would be. The dr. Also added more at the end to let my eggs "cook" a bit more. On their price sheet in 2014, they list X-Cycle Fee as $8,345. They say this includes 4 of each of the following---office visits, ultrasounds, Estradiol as well as one of each of the following---anesthesia, egg retrieval, facility, lab, cryo preservation & one yr of storage ($600). Blood testing, ultrasound and at least one office visit were covered by my insurance as they will not cover fertility treatments, but do pay for "diagnostic procedures and tests provided in connection with infertility evaluation. Office visits and consultation used to diagnose infertility."
She [Dr. Liyun Li] was always available to answer questions, in person, over the phone or email. She was aware of my personal situation beyond fertility and was friendly and conversational. She was good at explaining on my level along with science and statistics and was honest about "chance/luck" pkaying a role, for better or worse.
Biggest weakness [at Pacific Fertility Center] is the egg donor agency. I would never recommend them. So much hardship was felt as we went through 2 donors who were discharged during my cycles for undisclosed medical reasons and the third declined to participate, causing us to lose one full year. The clinics response was that we had a bad stroke of luck. After investing $30k, you can imagine how poorly this went over with us, but we felt stuck. They had our money, so we had to keep working with them. Fortunately in the end ourfinal donor worjed out and we had 13 embryos frozen. The clinic side us top notch, frim the Dr's, nurses, staff, hours, i only wish all healthcare could br this good.

My first cycle was a fresh donor egg cycle requring 3 Rx of shots. In the second and 3rd cycle she recomended Prometrium via vaginal inserts, which i did not care fir and requested shots fir the 3rd round. She urged me to continue w/Prometrium vaginally due to the potentcy and proximity to the uterus it is applied. I took her suggestion hesitantly, however the 3rd round was a success, so worth it.

...On one hand I was relieved that I finally had a potential answer for all my recurrent miscarriages, but on the other hand I was astonished that I had seen almost every doctor at PFC (pacific fertility center) over the course of two years and not one of them thought to investigate my uterine cavity. During my sonogram at ucsf, she pointed out all the scar tissue on the screen, it's white and very easy to see even with my untrained eye. A hysteroscopy was performed at ucsf a few weeks after the initial diganosis and a post-op sonogram revealed virtually no scar tissue, again very easy to see the difference with my untrained eye. I think 25K for IVF plus meds plus another 3K to natera for genetics testing, implant 3K each times 2... My case was different that most, because I could get pregnant easily but would miscarry so I think my case required more investigative work and I don't think this PFC is the place for you if you have a complicated history of pregnancies/miscarriages etc...First impressions are great at pfc, everyone is always prompt and informed, I think the nurse to patient ration always felt like 4 to 1. You can reach anyone at any time which is great for your first cycle, you have so many questions and concerns, calls/emails are always promptly returned. I loved the whole acupuncture option there as well, great to have. The docs do feel a bit rushed during the monitoring appointments and it's rare that your doctor performs your transfer or extraction, but i didn't think of this as a negative, the more docs I was exposed to and could ask questions I thought the better. How was your experience with Carl Herbert (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Again, mentioning his affability, he is very likable and an easy communicator. After a successful round of ivf with ccs, I had three frozen chromosomally normal eggs. We implanted one, I became pregnant, but no heartbeat at 7 weeks - having a dnc at week 8 - a few months later I implanted the next one, similar outcome. At this point, I had had 5 miscarriages, 7 pregnancies in 4 years.....with one naturally conceived easy live birth so I knew that I could carry to term. I had every blood test under the sun, always normal. I kept asking dr. herbert, 'is there anything that you can think of that would be causing these miscarriages?',...'should we check for anything else before we implant my last frozen egg?', His answer was fair for sure, 'could be anything, we never really know..let's do a medicated implantation this time' (more costly and time consuming for me) Before implanting my last egg, I sought a second option with ucsf, within one hour of meeting me they did a sonogram of my uterus and determined that I had a significant amount of scar tissue in my uterus due to all the pregnancies and dnc's over the last few years. Since I always miscarried around week 8, they determined that this was the most likely cause, the embryo simply couldn't grow any bigger. On one hand I was relieved that I finally had a potential answer for all my recurrent miscarriages, but on the other hand I was astonished that I had seen almost every doctor at PFC (pacific fertility center) over the course of two years and not one of them thought to investigate my uterine cavity. It seems that an easy routine test in the form of a thorough sonogram could have prevented so much heartbreak, let alone time and money.

dr. herbert has a great bed side manner, he is very likable and charming, a great salesman if you will. I had 5 natural pregnancies in 3 years, including only one live birth and one down's syndrome termination, so he and I both felt that IVF would be very successful and it was it terms of egg's retrieved.

7 pregnancies in 4 years, 5 conceived naturally, one live birth, one terminated downs pregnancies and a total of 5 miscarriages - two of which were eggs from my ivf with ccs, so normal eggs. A second option determined a septum had grown in my uterus most likely due to all the pregnancies - my uterus was septum free prior to pregnancy number 3, so it grew it that last two years. Shocking that nobody ever noticed this at PFC
He [Dr Herbert] has been in the field a long time and seems to know his stuff. I wish he would have been better at talking me through things and showing a bit more compassion throughout the process. Compared to other doctors, I think he did a good job during the ultrasounds. He didn't rush through them like many of the other doctors I saw and he was sure to show me each follicle and tell me how it was doing - this I really appreciated.
During the process I felt the communication between the doctors office [Pacific Fertility Center] and myself was very poor and i often felt confused about what was going on....I thought my coordinator was very good. She walked me through all of the steps and always kept in touch with me when things changed and provided me with a detailed calendar after each visit. My experience with the nurses was not as great. There were several instances where there was a miscommunication and I always left my conversations with them feeling uncertain. I also had a terrible experience on the day of my retrieval. The nurse that got me set up and did my IV was obviously new and very nervous. She was vocal to me about how nervous she was and was literally shaking as she was trying to put my IV in. After the procedure she told me how many eggs they got my failed to tell me what they didnt know yet how many they could freeze. She also didnt tell me that a nurse would call me the next day to tell me how successful it was.

Describe the protocols Carl Herbert (retired) used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
I wasn't given much explanation for the protocol used. I now now (only since I have been to another doctor) that he used the long protocol. I took estrogen pills before my cycle and then went on to menopur, follistim and ganirelix for about 9 days. My menopur was 150/night and follistim was around 350/night. He didn't explain there were different options so I assumed this was the only one. During my cycle he also upped my dosage and it wasn't clear why he did that.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Letty was my coordinator but i didnt have a specific nurse)
I thought my coordinator was very good.

The clinic itself is beautiful! Very quiet, clean and has amazing views. It is never too crowded so it is a nice place to sit and wait to be seen. All the staff in the office are professional and dress professionally.

my insurance didn't cover anything besides the initial visit so I paid for all ultrasounds as well as the procedure cost, Anastasia, and meds.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
There were some minor instances where I was given the wrong information from a nurse. During a review of how to use the injections a new nurse gave me the wrong information. Luckily, later that day I was still confused so I called the office and spoke to another nurse and got the right information. It's a good thing I called back. There was also an instance when it was clear the nurses did not communicate properly and gave me conflicting information.
I always wonder if we wasted by best embryos at PFC doing those fresh transfers. I wish he would have taken more time to consider what I was saying...I think if you are not successful with a protocol or a doctor, ask them to change things.
[Nurse Marris] was always responsive, never left me hanging or waiting for important results. I had other nurses where I had to check their work and make sure they got my prescriptions right, for example. I could really trust Marris.
How was your experience with Carl Herbert (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
I liked Dr. Herbert in general, he was kind and friendly enough. But I would say the warmest/most compassionate doctor in the practice is Schrioc. He proably has the best bedside manner/warmth. Over the course of the many years I was at PFC, I had appointments with all of the doctors, as they cover for each other for u/s and all the way to retrievals and transfers.
Dr. Herbert would get on the phone and answer questions and was responsive. It's looking back that I'm not sure he was as creative with treating my infertility. I had 3 retrievals and many transfers there - and don't think there were very many changes to my protocol. That being said, when I asked for some things, for example, for them to let all of my embryos "have a chance" and grow them out and freeze them, even if they were low quality, he let me. He let me transfer them too. Those "bad" embryos at least got me pregnant, though I did miscarry. My current clinic would not have frozen or transferred those low quality embryos. The fact that Dr. Herbert did and I got pregnant, gave me hope to continue - as that was my first pregnancy ever. Had my 1st round of IVF not produced a pregnancy at all, I think we would have quit. So bottom line, I found him more open to listening to my wishes, in that sense and letting me decide. I think that was a good thing.
On the other hand, I did bring up a concern with transferring fresh embryos when I am an endometrios patient (a disease that flares up with hormones). He wasn't very open to exploring this and we continued to transfer my best embryos in fresh transfers. My current clinic said they would not have done this with me, full of stim meds. In fact, the trend overall now, is to mostly do FETs. I always wonder if we wasted by best embryos at PFC doing those fresh transfers. I wish he would have taken more time to consider what I was saying.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Carl Herbert (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
I think if you are not successful with a protocal or a doctor, ask them to change things. They should learn from the data they have on your cycles. I would also ask them for their success rates with people similar to you. PFC is a big enough clinic now that nothing should be completely new to them. If it is - I would find another clinic. You don't want to be any clinic's guinea pig.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Carl Herbert (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
When I first started at PFC, they weren't very patient-centric. I was learning all of this new terminology and how everything worked - and had to be the translater between their different departments (that didn't talk to one another). This was a tremendous stress and burdent on me as a new patients - to check their work and keep them on track, when there was no way for me to know their process or even the fertility process for that matter. I made suggestions, and others must have complained too - b/c they then established teams for each doctor. So you would work with the same group who knew you and your treatment plan. This was a big improvement. And once I got a great nurse, it was much, much better. Though I am no longer with PFC, I have still had occasion to reach out to my nurse at PFC for updates and very rarely, some advice. That tipped the scales to feeling more "human".
Describe the protocols Carl Herbert (retired) used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Too long ago and too many to remember specifically. I know I used Follistim, Menopur, Cetrotide. My FETs were (mostly) unmedicated. I got 15 eggs on two rounds, 17 on another. So not a lot of variance there. We tended to have about an 80% fertilization rate. My embryos didn't do well between day 3 and 5 in the lab, so for my 2nd and 3rd round we froze on day 3. I had a few pregnancies, and all ended in m/c - some early and one 2nd trimester. No living children to date.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Marris)
As mentioned before, once they established teams, things were WAY better. Then you had one person managing and overseeing the whole process.
Marris was my primary contact and I think she went above and beyond for me many times. She advocated for me, she showed tremendous compassion during the tough times and losses. She became almost a friend and I feel she shared things with me about personal experiences to help me on my journey. I felt extremely luck to have her. She was always responsive, never left me hanging or waiting for important results. I had other nurses where I had to check their work and make sure they got my prescriptions right, for example. I could really trust Marris.
She is no longer in the same role, as far as I know, she is now a retrieval nurse. I'm sure she is wonderful there too, but is no longer the day-to-day contact for patients, which is a loss for PFC patients!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Carl Herbert (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
In 2010, I think IUIs were roughly $2,000 plus meds. For our second & third ERs we did a plan that allowed you to do two ERs if you didn't get pregnant, at a slight discount. That was in the mid-$20,000 range - drugs, monitoring and additional transfers were all in addition to that.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
It's hard to remember all of details now. I know had issues with lack of communication between departments several times. There was a lot of "you need to talk to x about that/not my department." It was frustrating when you were just trying to get through the process to be bounced around and manage up. And there were times that I didn't know I was supposed to be the middle man and it held things up at cricital junctures and then it felt like I was asking special favors to just keep moving.
I'm no longer at PFC and about a year after my last treatment, they sent me a bill for several hundred dollars. They claimed it was some unpaid portion of a FET. I am all OOP and had to pay my bills at the time of service, it's not like they were waiting on insurance or something. So it was odd of them to claim I hadn't paid in real time AND wait a year to bill me. I refused to pay and spoke to several people in billing about this. They agreed it was wrong to charge me. Just recently, I got another email saying I owed $ still. I keep having the same conversation over and over. The real rub is - while they continue to ask for this $, this month they refused to do my outside monitoring for my new clinic. I know this is unrelated to this bill - it's their "new policy". It just left me wondering how many unsuccessful patients they must have asking for outside monitoring, if they are refusing?? I found this very disappointing, after all the time & $ I spent there without success that they would not support me as I continue to try to build a family. Not having the continuity/having to find a 3rd clinic for just this piece has been stressful.
Isabelle Ryan has a very direct, succinct, blunt manner. That didn’t bother me at first, but at a later stage in my care I realized that many crisply communicated statements really glossed over important nuances, and areas of uncertainty. Our meetings were always very quick, and I left thinking I had gotten all the information I needed, but it’s hard to know what you don’t know. As a small example, I was a first-time patient, and it was never communicated to me that at PFC my doctor likely wouldn’t be performing my retrieval surgery. I now know this is very common, but this shouldn’t be communicated to a patient the first time in the middle of a stimulation cycle. Most importantly, I feel she handled my case poorly from a medical standpoint, and made critical errors which, subsequent doctors pointed out, introduced unnecessary risk.
The clinic definitely feels like a spa, so physically it’s a nice place to be considering the number of appointments involved in a cycle. I didn’t feel that people at the clinic were on the same page or coordinated in an organized way. They have different coordinators for everything (e.g. clinical nurse coordinator, financial coordinator), which made me assume there would be a lot of individual subject matter expertise, but the reality was they were rarely in sync and I found myself repeating a lot.

Most importantly, I feel she handled my case poorly from a medical standpoint, and made critical errors which, subsequent doctors pointed out, introduced unnecessary risk. She and her care team overlooked disturbing symptoms that I had and, in retrospect, gave me a treatment which was dangerous rather than helpful. This aspect of my case would not apply to most patients, but I think it speaks to a lax attitude about complications, and an unwillingness to take the time to think beyond the obvious norms.
Finally, she was coordinating care with an outside specialist, and the communication about the status of this coordination was bad -- I realized months later that the tests from the outside specialist had actually given me the opposite results that Dr. Ryan had used in her assumptions and care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Isabelle Ryan at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
I probably would see a different doctor unless you are ready to go home and independently fact check what you hear, and almost act as your own secondary doctor.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Isabelle Ryan at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
It was somewhere in the middle. The clinic is not an over-crowded factory type atmosphere, but I sometimes felt like a number because important details of my care often slipped through the cracks. I felt that Dr. Ryan’s care team, in particular nurse coordinator Doris Dalida at the time, didn’t do a good communicating clearly about my specific case, but would speak more generically meaning important details were left out.
Describe the protocols Isabelle Ryan used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Before cycling she had my husband and I do prophylactic antibiotics (zithromax and cipro).
First cycle (which ended in a cycle cancellation with no retrieval): 3 weeks birth control pills, started 200 IU Follistim & 75 IU Menopur, this was increased but not sure to what levels. Never triggered because cycle was canceled for poor response.
Second cycle: Removed IUD; no birth control pills. Estrace priming before cycle start (4 mg daily). At baseline ultrasound start micro-dose lupron (10 units, twice per day); then starting dose 300 IU Follistim and 150 IU Menopur. Trigger 10,000 IU hCG. Resulted in 19 eggs retrieved.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Doris Dalida)
I found Doris, Dr. Ryan’s nurse coordinator to be very underwhelming. She wasn’t very helpful in providing the information I needed and was not helpful in organizing my overall care. There were other nurses who was nice, but I never felt that I had someone really competent, who cared, who was on top of things for me.

Not sure how much we paid for the first canceled cycle.
Second cycle where we did a retrieval was about $12,000, though they gave us a $1,500 discount because of issues in our first cycle, and because we were self-pay patients. This did NOT include all of the lab tests and drugs, which added several thousand dollars, or the $1500 to Natera which is the outside reference lab used for PGS testing.
Describe Isabelle Ryan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
Recommended eSET with PGS, but did not do a transfer at PFC so it wasn’t a lengthy discussion.
What specific things went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
I did want to try to be as "natural" as possible and not take drastic measures unless we had to, and I'm not sure that was totally respected.
...The rest of the staff was quite frustrating to work with. Our information was not passed correctly from one team member to the next and I found myself having to repeat myself in the same appointment and in one appointment after another.
How was your experience with Philip Chenette at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Dr. Chenette came highly recommended to me, so I had high hopes. In our initial meeting, he reassured us that our situation was common and there were lots of avenues we could go down to increase our chances of getting pregnant. I did want to try to be as "natural" as possible and not take drastic measures unless we had to, and I'm not sure that was totally respected.
His team made a mistake putting together my schedule for when to take the Clomid, so the first time it didn't work. The second time was a slam dunk, so we were lucky enough not to have to take more extreme measures.
The nurse assigned to our case was absolutely fantastic, but other than that I'd say Dr Chenette was just ok, and the rest of the staff was quite frustrating to work with. Our information was not passed correctly from one team member to the next and I found myself having to repeat myself in the same appointment and in one appointment after another.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Philip Chenette at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Get a feel for the whole staff you'd be working with, not just Dr. Chenette.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Philip Chenette at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
I didn't feel like he adapted the conversation to me... as someone who didn't really want to go this route in the first place and was willing to take a bit more time to forgo taking drastic action, I don't think that changed Dr. Chenette's pitch.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
One of the nurses, not our primary one, plotted my schedule incorrectly on the calendar and the first month of appointments and medication was a complete waste because I was advised to take the Clomid on the wrong day. There was no discount for the several hundred dollars spent and I had to go through it all again. I also had to explain my situations multiple times, as my updates didn't quite seem to make it into the notes.
I did feel certain Dr. Ryan was on my team through the process. She was supportive and kind and professional. I didn't want to hear the news she was ultimately able to convince me of (that my lack of success was "120% due to egg quality") so I think I continued too long with attempting each method of treatment. Not sure what else she could have done to get through to me, but I do wish I hadn't put my body through so many medicated IUIs, for example.
At my first appointment, the receptionist [at Pacific Fertility Center] asked if my partner would be joining me. I was single. That was agony and hard to get past. Otherwise, I remember feeling pretty welcome.... I had one cancelled cycle for damaged sample, but I do not think it was the clinic's fault. It happened during shipping. I also had some miscommunication between me, the clinic and my OBGYN about when to restart treatment after recovering from a D & C. As a result, I "wasted" treatment on a cycle. I wish I had had a written protocol or direct communication between the 2 doctors. Relying on me to convey information to each doctor wasn't foolproof.

She was very thorough in describing the processes involved in IVF and I appreciated that. My only complaint was her failure to warn me of all the risks with the ectopic pregnancy. Perhaps she thought I knew how dangerous they are, but I did not. I had no idea.
I really liked most of the staff at PFC. They were efficient and kind. There was one nurse who gave us incorrect medical information, which I reported to Dr. Ryan.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
On my third IVF, I got pregnant, but the embryo implanted in my Fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy), I don't think the team looked closely enough during my first ultrasound to see if there was something in the tube, when they realized there was nothing in the uterus. Especially since I later learned that women who undergo IVF have a higher chance of ectopic pregnancies. It is possible it would not have been visible, but if it could have been visible in the uterus, why not in the tube? so a week later when the ectopic pregnancy became a large blood clot and threatened to rupture the tube, they gave me a drug to abort the non-viable pregnancy and told me i would be experiencing severe cramping over the next two days and that i had to stay in bed. On the way out the door, I asked, "is there anything i should look out for?" and she said, "yes, if you start having really severe pain and it lasts for 5 minutes, go to the emergency room immediately." That advice that was only given once prompted by question, saved my life later that night when the pregnancy did rupture causing massive internal bleeding that would have been fatal if I had not gone immediately to the hospital and had emergency surgery. Perhaps I would have gone anyway when the pain continued, but perhaps not. Regardless, it was something she should have told me without me asking the question.
I have low ovarian reserve and she [Dr. Givens] wanted to used the highest dose of medictaion for stimulation because of my age. My treatment was pretty standard [with Dr. Liyun Li]- it was my first retrieval...very kind and smart - I felt like I was in trustworthy and knowledgable hands. She doesn't rush conversations - and makes herself available whenever needed. She's very approachable - I didn't feel uncomfortable asking any questions...Be prepared to be given a lot of data - which is obviously important. But also make sure you fully understand the process. And ask lots of questions - Dr. Li is more than happy to answer any and all.
Very nice and welcoming facilities [at Pacific Fertility Center] - I felt like a human and not part of a machine. Never had to wait, was always called by my name, there were max one or two other people in the waiting room. They clearly know what they're doing and all of the providers impressed me. The one thing they can work on is bettering their communication regarding the process itself. During your consultation they go over all of the statistics and risks - which was of course important. But I was very confused about next steps - that could be streamlined tremendously.

Be willing to hear the hard truth, this is not a doctor [Dr. Ryan] that will sugar coat it for you. ... She warmed up the more I met with her. And she tailored each cycle to me. ... She advised starting with IVF, but due to financial my husband and I did IUI to start with Letrozole. She adjusted my dosage as we went. Then we switched to IVF, with 300 Folistim and 150 menopur, I just had a canceled cycle due to poor responding (3 folicles- 1 mature), so we did another IUI. I am currently in 2ww
You never want to know the staff at a fertility clinic, but every time I was there [Pacific Fertility Center] they were so nice and even started to recognize me. ... She warmed up the more I met with her. And she tailored each cycle to me. At this clinic sometimes you can see different doctors and I had an ultrasound with one and she followed up with me the same day and changed a protocol based on the fact she knew my history.
Describe the protocols Isabelle Ryan used in your cycles at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
You never want to know the staff at a fertility clinic, but every time I was there they were so nice and even started to recognize me.
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
Scheduling with them is pretty easy, I love that they are open on the weekends and early mornings before work. My doctor and team was always available to answer questions and I liked that I could email them.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Isabelle Ryan at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
Ultrasounds cost $330
iui cost $495
IVF round without medications about 19,000
He [Dr. Schriock] took lots of time to review all history even though I had already started treatment in NYC. He ran tests and reviewed with me personally. Has not rushed us into IVF but considering choices...is very knowledgeable and helped make a timeline and game plan for upcoming procedures...I have PCOS and was encouraged to see how the IUI process goes while also getting a sample from my husband and being able to see how those counts were. It’s was a good way to test the waters and the medications without a lot of risk.
[The nurse at Pacific Fertility Center is] very kind and friendly. Seems to rush a bit but she knows what she’s doing and is very organized...First appointment was approx $300. During IUI each ultrasound is approx $325 total IUI was $3500 or so...Eset is encouraged “for the health of the baby”...Office is friendly and clean. Doesn’t feel like a factory. Everything flows easily and they are very welcoming. Check in and out at different counters. Nurses run the show and are very friendly and attentive. Doctors are informed and ready thanks to lots of office support.
How was your experience with Eldon Schriock (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Dr. Schriock is very knowledgeable and helped make a timeline and game plan for upcoming procedures. The office is kind and friendly. I’m still have treatment ongoing at the office and hopefully will lead to pregnancy soon
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eldon Schriock (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?

Describe Eldon Schriock (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
He is straightforward and still compassionate, reviews our file before every appointment so he is up to date. Sometimes I wish I could get more answers or even speculation out of him, or more ideas of alternative things we could try....he does push IVF and donor eggs quickly, so push back if you're not ready.... The care team at PFC is quite empathetic and doctors are all nice, though overall the place is a bit of a factory
The care team at PFC is quite empathetic and doctors are all nice...Pros: Clean, fancy equipment, professional, beautiful location, allows phone appts, offers some mind-body services...overall the place is a bit of a factory and seem to minimize time with doctor as much as possible....they definitely push donor eggs and IVF early...Nurses respond quickly to emails, and in person all are very nice and helpful....you will rarely see your own doctor - it's whoever is on duty.

Nurses respond quickly to emails, and in person all are very nice and helpful. Coordinator was a bit annoying - kept getting mixed up with what our treatment plan was and forced a bunch of extra appointments.
Describe your experience with Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
Pros: Clean, fancy equipment, professional, beautiful location, allows phone appts, offers some mind-body services (but not by default), fairly good service-wise, pretty on-time and easy to get appts when you want them
Cons: expensive, it is most definitely a factory and doctors stay on time by spending very little time with each appt, sticking to standard protocols with little customization, they definitely push donor eggs and IVF early
Pro or Con: you will rarely see your own doctor - it's whoever is on duty.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Eldon Schriock (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
IVF with genetic testing full cycle (stims w ICSI + transfer) is around $25k
IUI around $2k, but i'm not sure about these numbers
Describe Eldon Schriock (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).
Dr. Li thoroughly answered any questions I had. She is not intimidating and is very patient. She is very kind and I felt she is very empathetic. Also, she smiles but is not overly professional like some doctors I've encountered. [At Pacific Fertility Center] $2000 for IUI, $25,000 to $30,000 approx for egg retrieval. $3,500 approx for each frozen embryo transfer. All approximations based on memory.
[Pacific Fertility Center is] mostly a well organized system. Needed documentation should be checked well before beginning a cycle and documents needing witnessing could have been done while I was there for other appointments but was not planned for convenience of patient. They recently adjusted this to online signatures which they should have done a long time ago. Dumb that they make you make an appointment to speak with a financial advisor and all the financial advisor does is tell you in two sentences how much it will cost. They could just email this information, make you sign it that you understand and give you a number to call if you have questions instead of wasting your time.

I believe the facility's policy is based on age and they are strict on one embryo per cycle because of the health risk involved with multiples.
What specific things went wrong at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
She [Dr. Carolyn Givens] is very no-nonsense and not super warm-and-fuzzy. But that was fine with me. All of the doctors at PFC had different personalities, some I liked better and some I liked less - but it was the overall competency of the center that was most important to me...One small thing - when Dr Givens called to share my PGS results, she said the male embryo had a slightly less promising Chromosome 21 result. It was actually one of the female embryos. Simple confusion, but could have changed my choice of embryo to transfer if I hadn't read the results myself.

She is candid, no-nonsense, not super warm-and-fuzzy but very competent and was genuinely happy with the positive outcome. Some PFC physicians I liked more and some I liked less, but it was the overall competence of the center that was important to me.

I went in with very good numbers and was doing IVF because it was the straightest route to pregnancy as a single woman. My cycle involved Follistim, Menpur, Ganirelix, and a bit of Lupron late in the cycle. It was a straight-forward stimulation and retrieval. Upon embryo transfer I was on progesterone and HCG.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic).

She [Dr. Carolyn Givens] strongly preferred transferring 1 embryo. So did I so we didn't discuss it much...was compassionate, honest and direct. She and her staff always remembered my name, my husband's name and the status of my case. She handled delivering bad news well. She was very clear with me about my prognosis and what my options were...She was on time for my appointments... was direct and clear on my prognosis from the beginning.
Nurses [at Pacific Fertility Center] were compassionate and super organized. I always knew what was happening, when and why. I was set home with great documents and knew what do to next...My only complaint was how they operated with egg donors. They had a strong preference for anonymous donors and we didn't so we definitely requested a couple of things that came across as exceptions. Also, after we left the clinic (because we moved), we were notified of a storage tank failure. I think they handled it pretty well, but I was not at all affected so it's hard for me to know that for sure.

I would give them advice to anyone looking at any RE. Be specific about their success rates for your type of case.

Dr Schriock was a good doctor and I would recommend him. In general he was very willing to answer questions and explain information.
I definitely have some small quibbles with the overall Pacific Fertility Center process, particularly with the handoff to non-primary doctors late in the process.
How was your experience with Eldon Schriock (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Dr Schriock was a good doctor and I would recommend him. In general he was very willing to answer questions and explain information. He is kind and caring. Fertility treatment is stressful and time sensitive, and I definitely have some small quibbles with the overall Pacific Fertility Center process, particularly with the handoff to non-primary doctors late in the process, although I do understand why they need to rotate doctors on call on weekends etc. However overall I would definitely recommend Dr Schriock and PFC.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Eldon Schriock (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
Make sure to proactively set up telephone consults if you need anything explained during the process rather than expecting detailed responses via email (which is primarily used for urgent/transactional communication only).
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Eldon Schriock (retired) at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic)?
I felt that Dr Schriock was very good about remembering me and treating me as an individual, however this wasn't the case with the assorted nurses, admin staff and non-primary doctors (when I wasn't able to see Dr Schriock) that I saw during the process. They were all warm and caring, but didn't know me as an individual at all.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Fertility Center (Prelude Network clinic). (Assigned nurse: Erica Garcia)
While I was assigned a care co-ordinator, I almost never saw that person during in person visits, and I believe that person actually moved on during my treatment period as suddenly someone else was answering my emails. All the nurses were generally kind and good at explaining, but because I saw so many different people there wasn't a sense of continuity and a few things got missed/were suboptimal along the way.
Dr Li was warm, efficient and candid. She explained why we would proceed with an IUI as a first step after a number of failed Clomid only cycles with my gynecologist. She answered all our questions and I learned a lot from her...Dr Li and her team were warm, efficient and candid. They were also flexible, and billing was transparent and reasonable...Do your research on possible treatments before your appointment so you can ask more informed questions...
The financial coordinator here [at Pacific Fertility Center] was much better than at my current clinic, and the billing was more reasonable. We used approximately $2500 of our Carrot fertility benefit for our IUI, including genetic testing and initial bloodwork. Each ultrasound was about $330.
Open minded, kind and professional are qualities I would ascrbe to Dr Herbert. ... It was gratifying that he was willing to use a new procedure that limited or most injections and relies instead on vaginal suppositories and oral meds to prep me as the recipient of the donor egg. This was an approach that has been very successful in the UK and I wanted to try it and avoid all the injections. It worked! Herbert had no ego around holding on to his own approach but did his own research and went forward with me in this novel approach with great success.
Really liked working with the donor coordinator [at Pacific Fertility Center] at the time and she helped us arrange a meeting with the donor which she facilitated. Process was seamless. First tried an agonist for IVF cycle #1 [with Dr. Philip Chenette]...tried antagonist (with growth hormone and supplements) for IVF cycle #2...His surrounding team was good at frequent check ins. He did not hide negative information...Strengths: laying out all treatment options. Being available for additional consultations when we wanted them...Weaknesses: very quickly jumped to egg donation (which was at odds with what other providers recommended)
Nursing staff [at Pacific Fertility Center] was organized and quick to answer all questions (answered emails within minutes or hours)...Per cycle was around $16490 (medications separate)...Nice, clean setting. All the physicians seemed to be experts in the field, which is important because they rotate on call on the weekends. The surrounding admin and nursing staff were all extremely attentive and organized. They were quick to answer any questions that came up, and the physicians were always willing to do extra phone visits. Information was sometimes delivered bluntly, so a positive attitude is important.
