Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Good communicator and friendly. ... Felt somewhat patient led in our treatments though, according to research I had done. Wondering how a less informed patient would get treated. ... Things like nutrition and supplements were only brought up if I mentioned them. She [Dr. Salem] agreed with everything I was doing, but again, wondering about a different patient who didn’t do as much research.
They [Pacific Reproductive Center] only do certain things on certain days. Like, consultations are only Mon Wed and Fri. I went to the Corona location, but they only do iui’s there on those same three days, so food one iui, we had to drive out to their Irvine location. ... They can get backed up and I’ve waited two hours past my appt time before, but I don’t work so I just deal with it. It’s not always like that. For initial testing, I had to get bloodwork done at Quest and do the HSG test at a different site, so not everything is done in house at this facility. They did the sperm wash and iui’s on site though.
How was your experience with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Good communicator and friendly. (A nurse practitioner actually did the iui procedure the second time and she was great, too.) Honest about success rates, but still hopeful and encouraging. Felt somewhat patient led in our treatments though, according to research I had done. Wondering how a less informed patient would get treated. Or perhaps because our tests came back with good results, it was more up in the air with what would work and what we could try, rather than tackling specific problems. Things like nutrition and supplements were only brought up if I mentioned them. She agreed with everything I was doing, but again, wondering about a different patient who didn’t do as much research. Not sure if she just didn’t think I’d need to be doing all the healthy things I am or what. She did say that not all of her patients want her opinion about nutrition, so maybe she has learned to gage how willing patients are to change their lifestyle. Our only hindrance in conceiving is that, while my husband’s sperm count is great and mobility is great, his overall volume was a little low. We tried 4 iui’s, which kind of have us equal chances to get pregnant at that point with people who have a normal volume, because they “wash“ the sperm and only insert the “best.” The count for the iui was higher each time than if we had needed to use donor sperm. With the last 2, we really seemed to find the right dosage of letrozole to produce two follicles, while having a great, thick uterine lining. However, none of the iui’s worked, so we have an appt to discuss ivf as the next step.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Do all the research you can and read It Starts with the Egg. Dr. Shala will answer any questions and won’t rush you, but it’s best to be self-informed as much as possible.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Very personable and listened to us. Always available to answer questions. She’s kind and straight forward.
Describe the protocols Shala Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
The first iui, we tried clomid because my husband’s coworker had success on clomid, though Dr. Shala had wanted to try letrozole first. Though I do not have any apparent issues ovulating or producing eggs, the idea is to hopefully produce at least 2 or more follicles to give us more chances to conceive. Each person responds differently to medication though, so it was a matter of trial and error to see what would work. She was perfectly fine to try clomid instead. In addition, I had read about women taking progesterone to also increase their chances to conceive, so this is something I brought up myself and Dr. Shala has no problem prescribing suppositories, which I would start using at night, the day after the iui, for two weeks until we tested. Though I do not have a luteal phase defect or some kind of progesterone deficiency, it was nice to know I was using these to help increase my chances and get my body prepared for pregnancy. There was always an appt once my cycle has started to ultrasound my uterus and check it’s “readiness.” Then I’d start taking the prescription. The first time being with clomid. A second appt was required shortly before ovulation to check my uterine lining and follicles. The first iui, my lining was at its thinnest, barely thick enough for the green light to do the iui. Then we’d do a trigger shot on the instructed morning. The trigger shot was used to time the iui, but also had some hcg in it to help the body prepare for pregnancy. The morning following the trigger shot, we did the iui procedure, with my husband producing the sperm at the location, an hour before the procedure. It was the same process all four times. The second iui, we switched to letrozole and my lining was thicker, but still only one follicle. The third iui, I took a doubled dose of letrozole and had two follicles ready, with a thick lining of 10mm. The 4th iui, we did the same doubled dosage and I had two follicles again; my lining was at 9mm. We were instructed that we could also have intercourse later on that day, to further increase our chances, which we did for all. Unfortunately, none of the iui’s worked, and we had not consulted about ivf yet, so we are basically missing out on this month with getting started with ivf. Part of me wishes we had consulted sooner, so that I could already be taking shots and starting the process, but we really wanted the iui to work (less money!) so perhaps it’s good to take a break?
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Reproductive Center.
Everyone is kind and helpful. They’re knowledgeable as well and can answer any questions. Sometimes they do get backed up with appointments, but even when they feel rushed, they’d still take the time with you that was needed. I never felt rushed myself. My only issue overall is how I felt self-led in what was going on with the research I had done, so I’m still not sure what the experience would be like for someone less prepared. Again though, every single person offered to answer questions and you can always call in to ask as well. Sometimes information is repeated, too, because they’re all used to doing the same thing and going through the motions.
Describe your experience with Pacific Reproductive Center.
They only do certain things on certain days. Like, consultations are only Mon Wed and Fri. I went to the Corona location, but they only do iui’s there on those same three days, so food one iui, we had to drive out to their Irvine location. They are not open on the weekend, so I have no idea what would’ve happened if I were set to ovulate on a weekend date. Had I gotten a positive pregnancy test, they said I would’ve needed to come in for a blood test, so I wonder if sometimes they can do certain bloodwork. I’m curious to find out what they can and cannot do during an ivf process.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center.
It’s all dependent on what a person’s insurance covers. My insurance only covers diagnostic testing, not treatment. Each iui, with all the medications, appointments and procedures probably ended up being $1500 each time. They claim to have a special, thorough semen analysis test that they do on site, which is $125 each time, regardless of insurance. It’s the same for doing the “wash” prior to an iui. Some people come to this clinic just to get the semen analysis done and then the results are sent to whatever fertility place or regular doctor they’re actually going to.
Describe Shala Salem's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Reproductive Center.
We have not discussed this with our doctor yet. I personally am not sure yet if I’d like to do more than one at a time anyway.

After undergoing fibroid surgery (myomectomy) through my OB my husband and I visited Dr S [Salem] and had lots of questions and concerns about our journey to become parents. Dr S wanted to know surgery details , what we’ve tried in past and was very aggressive but compassionate on our future treatment plans right away. ... I’m very happy to be under her care , she listens and does what is best for your personal journey . ...
All your apts are time sensitive so keep in mind when making apts. it’s a very busy clinic [Pacific Reproductive Center]. But I am always comfortable when I go . From the front desk to all the nursing staff you’ll feel welcomed and treated nicely . ... Amy and Maria [nurses] are excellent , any time I have questions (which I always do a million to be exact) they are always willing to answer and always keep me in a positive mindset . They make me feel comfortable and treat me as an individual and not as the next patient.
How was your experience with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
She is very easy to talk to and treats you individually , She explains in detail so you can understand procedures and treatment plans .Every procedure done so far has been comfortable (considering) trans vag ultra sound to be exact is very uneasy procedure to go through - but while doctor talks your way through what is currently happening she helps to put at ease the uncertain. Since our first round of treatment has been unsuccessful she’s always positive to educate us on what we can try next and not Give up. We are so glad to have such an awesome doctor to have treating us as not just a patient but a family who wants to grow by the help of science and what my body needs a little assistance with .
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Go in to your apt with an open mind and let your body and your doctor work together . Not every person is the same and one treatment is best for another. Don’t feel embarrassed to ask the million questions that go through your mind - she will listen and guide you through.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
She’s very attentive and treats you individually not as a statistic . I’m very happy to be under her care , she listens and does what is best for your personal journey . When a million questions have been asked she answers them in a realistic manner without making you feel uncomfortable. My husband and I are so glad to be under her care

Dr S wanted to know surgery details , what we’ve tried in past and was very aggressive but compassionate on our future treatment plans right away. Because of my age (36) the concern of being older all the testing began , blood work, Transvag ultrasound, and analysis began . Once all the test were done our treatment plan begun, so far it’s been one round of clomid which I did not respond too and now our next round of letrozole is currently our new plan .

We have a co pay that occurs every visit and our insurance coverage which happens to be really good , we went through our primary doctor so she is in our network up to certain procedures so as of right now the only out of pocket expense has been my husband analysis and our co pay

She [Dr. Salem] took the time to listen to our situation & gave her advice as how to move forward. During the process, she has been fantastic at explaining each step and making sure we understood the process & what was happening. Even when we got results we didn't want, she showed compassion & took the time to help explain what was going on ... they wouldn't recommend transferring multiple embryos (4 or more) due to our background.
Everyone was very professional, yet human. They [Pacific Reproductive Center] went above & beyond in explaining the cost. Breaking down the cost for each process; line by line. Along with helping us with our insurance ... They 'shop' around different pharmacies to find you the best prices on medications. They even gave us extra medications when I was running low on one & my refill wasn't going to arrive before I ran out!
How was your experience with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
She was very detailed in explaining the process in the beginning, along with images showing the process. She took the time to listen to our situation & gave her advice as how to move forward. During the process, she has been fantastic at explaining each step and making sure we understood the process & what was happening. Even when we got results we didn't want, she showed compassion & took the time to help explain what was going on, what the next steps would be, and did extra steps to make sure the results were what they were - which was not good (but no fault of hers).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Give it to God & pray daily. Try to be optimistic & hopeful. Be prepared to go through one of the most emotional times of your life! But she is awesome & will be there for every step.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
They treat you like a person. They listen to your concerns and fears & take the time to thoroughly explain all details of the whole IVF process, along with making it known that they have an open door and you can always call or email with questions or concerns.

Amazing! So sweet, such compassion, empathy, and care. They were all so so sweet. Even when the news wasn't good. They shed tears with me and were a big part of my journey so far.
Describe your experience with Pacific Reproductive Center.
I can't think of any weaknesses. Even though my first embryo transfer was unsuccessful, they were great through the entire process. Everyone was very professional, yet human. They went above & beyond in explaining the cost. Breaking down the cost for each process; line by line. Along with helping us with our insurance (we were blessed that our insurance covers up to a certain dollar amount). They 'shop' around different pharmacies to find you the best prices on medications. They even gave us extra medications when I was running low on one & my refill wasn't going to arrive before I ran out! They made sure I was comfortable for every procedure, explaining everything! I can't say enough good things about them & I'm continuing my IVF journey with them.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center.
I honestly don't remember the exact cost due to my health insurance covering a certain amount of the cost.
Describe Shala Salem's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Reproductive Center.
She did give her opinion based off our history & advised us they wouldn't recommend transferring multiple embryos (4 or more) due to our background. I strongly feel that it is a case by case situation.

Dr. Salem was always in a rush she never had time to explain treatment and get to know me and my goals for a family. Dr. Salem was unorganized and late to several appointments. She never gave me any alternative options such as donor eggs or fully explained why my fertility was compromised. Or wasn’t until I started to research independently that I discovered what DOR was and that donor eggs may be the best choice.
The clinic [Pacific Reproductive Ctr] is nice and well maintained. The clinic is busy and as a result can seem unorganized. The waiting room is inviting and quite, its tucked away in a business area right off the freeway. The clinic is easy to see and commute to... I was not happy with the coordinator Leslie. We had a mix up that cause me to be short with my medication during my first round.... I obvulated early while waiting for egg retrieval procedure. Due to medication mix up

Outside of my obgyn this was the first Experience with a RE. After I asked for Donor egg information, I was told that someone would contact me. No one ever bothered to follow up. After locating another clinic to help me with DEIVF, Dr Salem’s office refused to mail over my medical records in a timely matter. This caused me to redo some tests that could have been avoided. Horrible experience
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Research your situation, ask lots of questions and get several opinions from other doctors. Compare potential protocols

I was not happy with the coordinator Leslie. We had a mix up that cause me to be short with my medication during my first round. She acknowledged that this was her mistake however it causes tonyhe stress of the procedure

I went through each question in my notebook and she [Dr Shala Salem] answered them all. I have done a fresh cycle/transfer, FET and two more fresh cycle/transfers with PRC. Dr. Salem was involved in all but one (she was on maternity leave). I always felt she cared about us, she wanted me to understand the process, she wanted to figure out how to help us. She is kind, knowledgable, always available for questions and very compassionate. As a result of my cycles I have a 21 month old son and am currently expecting twin girls.
The strengths of this clinic [Pacific Reproductive Center] is everyone on staff is very compassionate, great at communicating and invested in the patients which is vital with this type of medical care. They have top of the line embryologist, nurses and doctors. They perform PGS in their lab so a fresh transfer is an option. Only weakness would be for most appointment you have to wait anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hours (only once this long happened). I really believe the wait is because they have a lot of patients and they take their time with each patient.
How was your experience with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
When we first met Dr Salem to discuss our struggles trying to conceive over the last year, she discussed with us what testing we could do and that from there we could discuss options. At that time I had no clue I would need IVF so I told her we did not want to do that, she was fine with our choices. When she called to give me the diagnosis of hydrosalpinx of both tubes, I was devasted and sobbing. She talked with me and never brought up IVF because at our consult we said we didn't want to do it. We chose to go forward with IVF because we knew it was our chance at children together which we so wanted. We met with her and she was kind, I had a notebook full of questions she talked to us about all the options for our IVF cycle. We decided what procedures we wanted to include (ICSI, AH & PGS). I went through each question in my notebook and she answered them all. I have done a fresh cycle/transfer, FET and two more fresh cycle/transfers with PRC. Dr. Salem was involved in all but one (she was on maternity leave). I always felt she cared about us, she wanted me to understand the process, she wanted to figure out how to help us. Don't be afraid to ask her questions and trust that she has your best interest at heart. She really cares about her patients.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shala Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Dr Salem from day 1 of meeting her and every single appointment with her always took her time with us. She answered any and all questions we had during the process. She explained all procedures they would be doing. She never made me feel like she didn't have time to talk to me or that any of my concerns or fears were invalid. She never pushed us to do anything we didn't want to do.
Describe the protocols Shala Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
All of my fresh cycles have been the Long Lupron Protocol with Follistim & Menopur and then trigger with Pregnyl (HCG). All of my fresh cycle we have done AH, ICSI and PGS testing with a fresh day 5 transfer of 2 embryos. My first IVF cycle worked and I got pregnant with my son in 2013, he was born 2014. In 2015 we did an FET with embryos from the 2013 cycle and had a CP. Prior to start of FET we did a hysteroscopy which showed uterus was clear from scarring and polyps. We then did a fresh cycle after which also resulted in a CP. We added Cabergoline this cycle to reduce risk of OHSS because I'm a high reposnder and e2 tends to get a bit high. For the next fresh cycle we did an RPL panel and checked NK cells, the results came back pretty normal except Vitamin D slightly low so I started a D3 supplement. We also repeated hysteroscopy and did endo scratch. Hysteroscopy revealed a polyp and scar tissue which was removed. During the stim cycle we added Heparin until 12 weeks gestation and intralipid infusions during stims, at embryo transfer and after positive pregnancy confirmed with 2 beta HCG blood tests. This cycle and these changes resulted in twin girls which are due October 2016.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Leslie )
Leslie & Amy are both primary nurses which would oversee my different cycles. Both of them are amazing, they always got me my calendar for cycle fast and answered any questions I had. They were very compassionate with my losses and kept telling me they had hope and knew it would work. They were more optimistic than I could find the strength to be. They understand my fears and were supportive. They never tried to answer questions or give advice which was out of their scope of knowledge which I appreciated. There are other nurses at both facilities who helped with procedures, taking blood work and they also were very personal and invested in our success. They always talked with me, made sure I was told what was going to be done and made sure I was comfortable with what we were doing.

Our FET cost about $7000 including all medication. The fresh cycles ranged from $20,000-$25,000 which included all procedures, office visits, monitoring, medication, ICSI, AH & PGS testing.

I feel like she [Dr. Salem] wanted to go to IVF right away and I didn’t understand why. I’m a nurse and I felt like it was a money game. I wanted to start with clomid first and then go from there. She said she didn’t recommend it with no real explanation....she says IVF is best. I did have the procedure to remove the polyps....when I reviewed it with the doctor, she said I didn’t have enough. So there is miscommunication
I had a good experience with the nursing staff. They [Pacific Repro Ctr] were very nice...The weakness is when I was having my ultrasound sound done to see how many eggs I had. I recall the lady saying I had a lot. Then when I reviewed it with the doctor, she said I didn’t have enough. So there is miscommunication...I paid 1300 to have my polyps removed. And 150 to test my husband....I just feel like the doctor wanted to go straight to IVF when we first talked.

I feel like she wanted to go straight to IVF. I wanted to try clomid first and go from there. But she says IVF is best. I did have the procedure to remove the polyps. So I’m hoping it will help now if I can be so lucky to have a grant! Secondary infertility is the worst. I have so much guilt that my daughter will have no one.

Clomid/IUI [cycle with Dr. Salem] - but it got cancelled because I ovulated too soon [Another] Clomid/IUI - but it also got cancelled and i was told to just TTC on the clomid Saline Ultrasound...I was talked to respectfully and given information I could understand. I never felt like I was just a number or rushed...She was nice but I did feel like IVF was the way she wanted to go even when I wanted to try IUI and clomid first. She was a good doctor though and understanding. I did value her opinion and what she was telling me.. it just felt like she always wanted me to do more.
They [nurses at Pacific Reproductive Center] were extremely nice and showed compassion and care. I didn't interact too much with them.. from what I did, it was good...IVF was going to be upwards of $20-30k (with PGS testing)...It is a beautiful office. I felt like they rushed me to IVF without giving me other options first. Although I eventually did do IVF, I went with a different clinic... so just know what you want when you go in ther.

He [Dr. Rifaat Salem] was kind and compassionate. He went into great detail on a plan he thought would work. We chose to continue with a FET due to finances but he suggested a fresh would be better for our situation...He spent a good amount of time looking at our chart to try to figure the best next thing. I felt like he cared and wanted to succeed. He wasn’t always available because his main office was at the Torrance location.
If you start at the Corona office [of Pacific Reproductive Center] keep in mind to do almost all the procedures you have to travel to Torrence. This was not told to us at first so it was a bit of a surprise...The main nurse was very kind. She was very knowledgeable...Clinic was in a good location. And I a nice building. There isn’t always someone manning the front desk so i has to wait around a few times. There is a separate room for blood draw. And another room for ultra sounds. The nurse had her own office.

She [Dr. Shala Salem] did not try to get to know my situation or even my name. The whole process with her felt ingenuine...She spent about half an hour on our first meeting going over my last IVF and results. He [Dr. Rifaat Salem] was at my first monitoring appointment and said I might have PCOS because of the amount of follicles I had, and then is was a different Dr or nurse everytime after. no other Dr or nurse mentioned PCOS...I wasted two of my progyny cycles with Rifaat that I did not get back...Two cylcles of clomid, 50mg. because he was sure I could get pregnant with just clomid. both times negative
Every time I went in [to Pacific Reproductive Center] I had to explain to a different Dr or Nurse what they were looking at on the ultrasound. I seen a different person everytime...This is a horrible clinic, stay away. they have no strengths, very inconsistent and just want your money. why is Salem Rifaat still practicing.
How was your experience with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
I have uterine fibroids so I went in for a consultation. He advised I could definitely get pregnant with my fibroids, and the biggest was a 5cm. He said we should start with clomid and I needed to have a Uterine biopsy. The biopsy took place at another office where I had to pay out of pocket because my insurance didn't cover that facility. When I asked if I needed the procedure, it was said, its good to have. So I had the procedure which was later confirmed by my OBGYN and three other fertility Dr's to not have been necessary. He was at my first monitoring appointment and said I might have PCOS because of the amount of follicles I had, and then is was a different Dr or nurse everytime after. no other Dr or nurse mentioned PCOS, but they would ask me if I had fibroids, the biggest fibroid everyone acted like they didnt know it was a fibroid and at on time a nurse said maybe it was a growth off my kidney. the second clomid cycle failed as well. We were going to start the 3rd cycle and I went in for monitoring. It was a different Dr Salem, a women. After the ultrasound she immediately said " I do not recommend continuing treatment cycles until you removed these fibroids" she was very shocked I started clomid cycles. I wasted two of my progyny cycles with Rifaat that I did not get back. I just got off of the table and walked out. The I got a second opinion and they also said the fibroids needed to be removed before any thoughts of pregnancy. The 5cm fibroid that he said was the biggest and OK to get pregnant with was really a 7cm fibroid and there were more than 4!!!

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Salem is straightforward but encouraging. His greatest asset is his decades of experience, and I have found him hopeful for me without being unrealistically optimistic. He relies on clinicians to do a lot of the day-to-day, which for me was not a problem at all, but it's something to know going in. There are certain opinions he has based on personal experience that are not necessarily the main "done thing" across all clinics. That said, he makes very clear the distinction that his recommendations are not the only way of doing things, and the patient has the ultimate choice -- something I really appreciate.
The [Pacific Reproductive Center] Glendale location has a wonderful staff, but only recently got up and running (Jan '23) again after the pandemic. It's not really bustling as the secondary office, so it's more bare-bones as a facility. They have a nice big waiting room, but the water and coffee machine have never been set up, for example. They know you and make you feel cared for, which is a lot more important to me than free coffee.

Ask to work with Akira! Dr. Salem trusts her a lot and she's wonderful.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
My clinician, Akira, is really the person who makes my experience at PRC exceptional (along with the office staff). Dr. Salem puts a lot of trust in her, and she has become like a friend to me. She is extremely available to answer questions for me, and has supported me in many tangible ways. She also explains things in great detail when I ask questions.
Describe the protocols Rifaat Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
I had an investigative hysteroscopy, which was done under anesthesia. Everything looked good and a biopsy came back normal. One IUI cycle with Clomid, one with letrazole. Letrazole was easier on my system and helped with the lining. Both IUIs used donor sperm, which was delivered by courier to the Torrance office, where most procedures are done. Both egg retrievals involved Menopur injections as well as GonalF injections. My fresh cycle (which resulted in a pregnancy, but blighted ovum miscarriage confirmed around 8 wks) also involved progesterone (injections and vaginal suppositories). A second IVF cycle started about 5 months after the miscarriage with Enskyce for one week, then Menopur and GonalF. Both retrievals were under anesthesia. In-office embryologists used ICSI to create embryos and called with updates.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Akira Watanabe)
Akira is such a godsend. I've heard many women describe feeling like they were not cared for or had no one to walk them through their clinic journeys, and with Akira I couldn't feel more different. She made herself available to me by email, phone, or text, answered all my questions thoroughly, and even once offered to drive me home from a procedure when I worried I wouldn't be able to find someone to pick me up (I was able to find someone). She's also very well read on what's happening in the science of fertility and will explain in detail (if asked to!).

IUI: approx $1195 First IVF Cycle (fresh transfer) $12,464 IVF Cycle for frozen embryos (no FET yet) $8,464 anesthesia and medication costs not included
Describe Rifaat Salem's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Reproductive Center.
For the first (fresh) IVF, Dr. Salem transferred all 3 of my embryos after 3 days, saying that they were more likely to thrive (or, at least one of them) in utero than outside. The clinic does have you sign paperwork saying that you understand the option of elective reduction in the event of multiples. I am not sure yet if he'll encourage multiple frozen embryo transfer for my FET, because it won't happen for a few months yet.

He listened to my questions and explained things in a way I could understand.... He was compassionate and very confident. He was willing to talk when I had questions and he was very positive. He gave us another consultation after we had our first daughter and wanted to try again and really explained our chances with the remaining embryos we had.... For my fresh cycle with Dr. Salem I took metformin all throughout and I was on birth control for 19 days
The clinics strengths are that the doctor is wonderful want the surgery staff [Pacific Reproductive Center] is fantastic! Weaknesses would be that sometimes getting information from the nurses is very frustrating. When I was trying to get the result as to whether or not I was pregnant both the nurses and the receptionist claimed they couldn't check the fax machine (that's where the results would be)... Apparently it was some unknown person that checked it and emailed it to them

He listened to my questions and explained things in a way I could understand.
Describe the protocols Rifaat Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
For my fresh cycle with Dr. Salem I took metformin all throughout and I was on birth control for 19 days, 14 days in I started Lupron 10 U shots. I did the Lupron shots for 18 days. CD2 I started taking prenatal vitamins, started Follistim 150 shots, Menopur shots, medrol 16 mg/day, and a baby aspirin. I had about 30 eggs growing on each ovary so we scaled down the medications from about CD7...I can't remember exactly what they had me do, but I think I skipped a dose of Follistim. I took all of that for 7 days. On CD12 I had an HCG trigger shot. I had my egg retrieval CD 13. That day I started progesterone injections 1 mL/day, doxycycline (just for 5 days), and delestrogen (0.3 mL twice a week). I continued the prenatal, baby aspirin, and medrol. On CD18 I had my embryo transfer. As far as blood work and ultrasounds: I had blood work and ultrasounds done CD1, CD7, CD9, and CD11. We transferred 2 embryos to increase our chances of at least one implanting. Then I was on bed rest for 3 days. Ten days after the transfer I had a blood test to see if I was pregnant, then two days later I had another test. And i was! Then when I was 7 weeks along I had an ultrasound to make sure there was a heartbeat and then had an ultrasound again at 9 weeks and then I was released to my regular OB. For the Frozen embryo transfer we did about 2 years later I was on metformin all throughout and BC for 16 days. 10 days in I started Lupron 15U shots. I took 15U for 11 days and then we took it down to 10U. On CD2 I started prenatal vitamins daily, baby aspirin daily, and delestrogen .5 mL injections twice a week until CD13. On CD14 I started medrol 16 mg/day and progesterone .50mg shot. Throughout that time I had blood work and ultrasounds on CD1 and CD11. And just blood work on CD8. The embryo transfer was CD19. We transferred 2 embryos again. After the transfer I stopped the Lupron, but started the progesterone vaginal capsules daily, and continued the rest of my medication (progesterone injections, prenatals, baby aspirin, medrol, and delestrogen). Seven days later I had my first blood draw to check to see if I was pregnant and to 2 days later had another. That one ended up being a chemical pregnancy.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Reproductive Center.
Our first cycle with PRC was fantastic. The nurses were so helpful and available. However, for the FET I got very frustrated, they took a long time to get back to me when I called. All of that I could have overlooked, but when I was waiting for my results I had a horrible experience! So they told me that I was pregnant because my blood work showed that I was pregnant, but then it didn't double like it should have, so they had me get my blood drawn again the next day. However, they kept having some difficulties getting my results and wouldn't call me back. I had to call 14 times to finally find out that I was no longer pregnant and actually just had a chemical pregnancy. It was emotional and very frustrating.
Describe your experience with Pacific Reproductive Center.
The clinics strengths are that the doctor is wonderful want the surgery staff is fantastic! Weaknesses would be that sometimes getting information from the nurses is very frustrating. When I was trying to get the result as to whether or not I was pregnant both the nurses and the receptionist claimed they couldn't check the fax machine (that's where the results would be)... Apparently it was some unknown person that checked it and emailed it to them... Finally they must have figured out who checked it or how to do so because I finally got the results to my FET...BFN. However, during my fresh cycle everyone was wonderful... So maybe it was a fluke the second time ...

How was your experience with Sharon E. Moayeri at Pacific Reproductive Center?
The doctor was everything we could want and more. She was kind but honest with us. She backed up all her assessments with scientific evidence. She gave us a clear path of what the next steps were. Nothing was sugar coated yet she made it obvious that she would be with us and do what was best to increase our chances of success.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Sharon E. Moayeri at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Dr. Moayeri firmly supports scientific research. She is open to complementing her treatments with some homeopathic approaches (e.g. acupuncture), but you should know that she is basing her decisions on the scientific reality of the situation so do not come to her if you are looking for a homeopathic or non-scientific approach to fertility. Also, you should expect that she will be honest, thorough and comprehensive in her diagnoses and in providing you with information. She will not hold your hand along the way so you should plan on getting emotional support elsewhere. Her job and her #1 priority is to do everything scientifically possible to increase the likelihood that you succeed in your fertility goals. If you are lucky enough to work with her, I expect that you will be extremely satisfied with her care just as we were! We are eternally grateful for the medical support that she provided.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Sharon E. Moayeri at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Always opportunities to ask questions. Never felt rushed. Clearly had done her homework before every visit so she remembered and was up-to-date on where we were and what was next. Always very clear and concise about reality of the situation. Did not sugar coat anything but was honest, frank and backed everything up with science. It was clear that she wanted us to succeed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Reproductive Center.
The nursing staff was incredibly professional, compassionate, well-trained and thorough. I had lots of questions. They had lots of answers! They were always very patient with us when we came back with even more questions later or struggled with certain techniques. I was also impressed by the fact that they worked very well together as a team.

Describe Sharon E. Moayeri's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Reproductive Center.
Dr. Moayeri's approach to the number of embryo transfer is based on scientific evidence. Certainly, for older patients or patients with a history of miscarriages or other complications, she may recommend multiple transfers, however, her #1 priority is to ensure that you end up with one healthy baby. Therefore, her preference will be to transfer one embryo where possible since transferring multiple embryos increases all sorts of risks. Again, based on science, the wisest approach is to have the embryo/s chromosomally tested so that she can transfer the smallest number of chromosomally-normal embryos possible.

How was your experience with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
He was very charming the first time I met him. From then on, he had no contact with me via phone or email. I had questions about all sorts if things and he didn’t care enough to ever respond because I had already written a check.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Stay far far away. Find another doctor like Dr. Lin in Irvine.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
I met him twice. The first time was for the initial consultation. The 2nd time was when the egg implantation was to occur but unfortunately both embryos were aneuploid and not appropriate for anything but research. He never responded to phone calls between the two meetings. When I would see him in the waiting room or hallway, he would ignore me. At the final meeting, he was cold and indifferent. When I started to cry, he told me it was time for me to leave.
Describe the protocols Rifaat Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Hysteroscopy for egg retrieval Medications such as cetride, clomid, gonal-f to grow as many eggs as possible 2 fertilized eggs were checked with pgd, both had aneuploidy
Describe your experience with your nurse at Pacific Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Alex Corona)
Instructions for medications were incomplete and at times incorrect and even non-existent. The team was hard to get in touch with. They rarely called back and emails were short and non-informational. After surgeries, I was allowed to walk out without a caregiver although I had to sign legal documents saying they would not release me without a caregiver due to the anesthesiology. After surgeries, I would find things still taped to me even though they had disconnected IVs and breathing tubes.
Describe your experience with Pacific Reproductive Center.
This place is either offering bad faith medicine on purpose or completely dysfunctional. The staff only get in touch about payments. You have to aggressively pursue them for answers about medications, method and placement of shots, timing of shots, and making next appointments. It is almost like they want you to fail 2-3 times so they get more money.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Pacific Reproductive Center.
It ruined my schedule. It was never according to my convenience but according to theirs. It was come tomorrow at 2. There was no choice. If I didn’t go at 2, the cycle was canceled and there’d be no refund or rolling leftover funds over to the next. cycle.

Describe Rifaat Salem's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Pacific Reproductive Center.

He [Dr Rifaat Salem] went on to to many more egg retrievals and transfers as well as other procedures during the multiple cycles we did. He knew us personally and always made me feel at home at that office. I always trusted his expertise as well as his staff, he has a lot of experience and keeps the best staff on hand to treat his patients with him.... personally appreciated his cander with us on what we needed to do and how things were going. You can ask himanything and he will take the time to make sure you understand.
They are also willing to listen to your input and take your thoughts on the cycle into consideration. Only weakness would be that they only have one facility that it equipped to do procedures so when you have them there is some traveling needed. I personally stayed at a hotel near that locations to take the stress out of travel with time specific procedures.

I first net doctor Rifaat Salem for my first egg retrieval, he cane to see while I was getting prepped and introduced himself and explained the procedure. During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Dr. Rifaat Salem performed all of my procedures (hysteroscopy, egg retrievals, embryo transfers, polyp removal and endo scratch). Each and every time he saw me he knew who I was, spoke to me using my first name before each procedure he always came to say hi and check on me. He was always up front and honest with me about how things were going.
Describe the protocols Rifaat Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Reproductive Center.
The nursing staff here is absolutely amazing. During all my procedures they made me feel so comfortable, they explained everything they were doing and what would be done. They also took time to talk to me and get to know me personally. They shared good things they noticed during each of my cycles and they shared in my joy when the cycles worked and my pain when they didn't. They were always positive and optimistic.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center.
Our FET cost about $7000 including all medication. The fresh cycles ranged from $20,000-$25,000 which included all procedures, office visits, monitoring, medication, ICSI, AH & PGS testing.

Dr Salem never had a good bedside manner but that didn't matter to me. He got the job done for my cycle in 2013 but when I returned in 2016 for a failed FET and later a miserable fresh cycle, he was completely uninterested...Then because I had so few follicles growing and they were small, he had he continue to stim for too long, likely compromising egg and embryo quality. I was devastated at the results of that egg retrieval and fresh transfer and immediately sought a new doctor.

How was your experience with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Dr Salem never had a good bedside manner but that didn't matter to me. He got the job done for my cycle in 2013 but when I returned in 2016 for a failed FET and later a miserable fresh cycle, he was completely uninterested. He was working on opening a clinic in Dubai and not paying any attention to his work. I didn't lose confidence in him after my failed FET because things happen and no fertility treatment guarantees success so I agreed to do another fresh cycle. That cycle was a nightmare, he barley glance at my ovaries during ultrasounds while I was on stims, only measured ONE follicle so he never increased my dosage when I wasn't responding well. Then because I had so few follicles growing and they were small, he had he continue to stim for too long, likely compromising egg and embryo quality. I was devastated at the results of that egg retrieval and fresh transfer and immediately sought a new doctor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Choose another doctor. Dr Salem doesn't care about his patients.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center?
Dr Salem never remember what was going on in my cycles when he was examining me or asking me questions. He didn't bother to glance at my chart to find out which cycle day I was on and he would ask the same questions at every visit, not remembering me from even 2-4 days prior.
Describe the protocols Rifaat Salem used in your cycles at Pacific Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
Dr Salem prescribed menopur and follistim. He did not properly monitor my follicle growth for my fresh cycle in 2015 like he did in 2013. I needed severa dosage adjustments the first time around. The second time he never bothered to measure my follicle sizes and never increased my dosage throughout the cycle.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Pacific Reproductive Center.
The nursing staff at the Irvine office were far more genuine and caring than those at the Torrance location. I wish they could have handled the procedures instead of just monitoring.
Describe your experience with Pacific Reproductive Center.
This clinic is owned and operated by Rifaat Salem and I strongly recommend against anyone using their services.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Rifaat Salem at Pacific Reproductive Center.
My first cycle was a two cycle package (only used one to get pregnant) was $15,000 without medication. I qualified for a reduced rate for a second single cycle later and it was $8500 without medications.
