Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

I felt that the dr [Dr. Payne] was concise and detailed in all dealings. Considerate and supportive when needed and looked after my best interests both personally and financially. I received all the appropriate information that I needed at each stage of this journey and felt like I was patiently listened to when I needed more answers or support.... With my severely diminished egg reserve, the best treatments were oral hormones, ultrasound and hormonal injections to encourage follicle development. We did one cycle "naturally" and then 6 cycles with IUI. None of these cycles resulted in a pregnancy and we are now looking at IVF.
Clean, convenient setting with lots of parking and easy accessibility. Good weekly hours but very short hours on Friday. Occasionally, I had to wait 30-45 minutes for a scheduled appointment because the clinic [PREG] was understaffed. That was a little difficult with my work schedule but the nurses and dr were always very apologetic. I had a few issues over the weekend and had to call the answering service. The nurse on call got back to me promptly and, in the one instance that warranted it, got in touch with the dr on call immediately.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Ask all the questions that you need. I think sometimes women don't feel like they can ask for what they need and it's so important to feel like you have a handle on all the different aspects of your fertility.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Payne at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
The doctor, nurses and the receptionists at the practice made a point to know me and be supportive during this whole experience.

I had a couple blood draws for my post ovulation progesterone level assessment that were never communicated to me. I had to call the clinic and request the results. In one instance, they never called me back with the information.

He [Dr. John Nichols] is straightforward yet soft. This is refreshing! He does not dance around feelings and that provides so much more confidence in the process. He did not look at me like a wounded animal but rather just a bit more complex than the average lady. This was huge for my personal mental health as this process can be overwhelming.... I have a homogeneous folic acid mutation and thyroid issue. I am on folate, thyroid and baby aspirin every day now. My blood work is now normal after 6 weeks of taking the meds. I just finished 1 round of fermera and will take an injection tomorrow to help ovulation. I will then start with progesterone hoping for a positive.
[PREG- Ashevile is] Easy to find, clear communication and honest feedback. Make sure to call your insurance to find out how they handle infertility. From bloodwork to appointments, each one is diffrent. PREG lets you know what to call about beforehand and is very honest about cost structures.... What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
No advice in particular. If you are looking for someone to give you a huge and cry with you every appointment. This is not the guy for you. If you are looking for honest and straightforward answers, that's who he is! He knows you don't want to waste any more time, nor does he.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Before we came to PREG we had 2 miscarriages and felt as if we were getting nowhere. In addition, my OBGYN and staff treated me like a wounded animal. This was SO different when going to PREG and seeing Dr. Nicoles. He was confident in his responses and assured me that he was going to help us figure this out. He did look at me like I was broken. He was direct yet soft. Trust me, after 3 years of trying and multiple pregnancy losses, you just want someone on your team with honest and straightforward communication. I felt heard yet he did not tiptoe around the facts, which was a breath of fresh air! Most importantly you hear horror stories of fertility clinics taking advantage of your desire for children so they charge you at every corner.....PREG is 100% not that. They are aware of the cost and the impact of your family at EVERY appointment. Even blood work. Being "new" to the infertility world it has been awesome to know they will be honest and fair. No mistruths or surprises.

Dr. Nichols provided multiple options for my husband and me during our consultation appointment. We decided to try timed intercourse plus medications (letrozole + trigger shot with HCG) for 2-3 cycles prior to progressing to the next step. ... but for this next cycle, the dose of letrozole was increased from 2.5mg to 5mg. ... He used a patient-centered approach with us and encouraged us to be active participants in the care plan. ...
My husband and I have been very pleased with PREG. All our encounters with staff and personnel have been positive. Physicians and nursing are informative and caring. Any questions we have had are addressed promptly and fully. ... Education that was provided after our first visit was extremely informative and helpful. All our calls have been returned promptly and questions answered fully.
How was your experience with John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Our consultation visit with Dr. Nichols was very informative. We appreciated his direct approach and discussion of the pros/cons of each treatment option. The information presented can be very overwhelming in a consultation visit, but we left with a clear understanding of what to expect next, as well as optimism.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I would advise a new patient to have an idea of what they want in terms of treatment options and not to take a passive approach to these decisions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr.Nichols addressed my husband and I with respect and listened to our concerns and questions. He used a patient-centered approach with us and encouraged us to be active participants in the care plan.
Describe the protocols John Nichols used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
So far, we have only had one cycle with Dr. Nichols. Based on previous work-up with a fertility specialist the month before (whom referred us to PREG after initial work-up was inconclusive), Dr. Nichols provided multiple options for my husband and me during our consultation appointment. We decided to try timed intercourse plus medications (letrozole + trigger shot with HCG) for 2-3 cycles prior to progressing to the next step. Unfortunately we did not get pregnant this first cycle but for this next cycle, the dose of letrozole was increased from 2.5mg to 5mg.

Nursing staff has been wonderful. Education that was provided after our first visit was extremely informative and helpful. All our calls have been returned promptly and questions answered fully. Wonderful experience!

Describe the costs associated with your care under John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
My insurance required a $40 copay for all visits. Insurance provided some coverage for medications and covered all diagnostic procedures; however insurance will not cover IVF.

I never, ever leave the office with questions. Half the time Dr. McCoy answers my questions before I even ask them.... My experience as a patient has been excellent in regards to Dr. McCoy. With upsetting news he has been matter of fact, which is what I personally need from my doctor.... If you need to be coddled as a patient you may want to look elsewhere. Dr. McCoy is excellent but there isn't a lot of handholding.
Every single staff member (doctors, nurses, office staff) [PREG] have been genuinely nice and considerate. Return phone calls take a few days if it's not an immediate medical issue. On the other side of that, an immediate medical issue will get you a return call in less than twenty-four hours.... The test for ovarian reserve wasn't ordered until almost a year into treatment. I had a nurse not call in my Letrozole once.
How was your experience with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?

Describe the protocols Travis McCoy used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
At first we didn't really know what was wrong so we tried Letrozole with a trigger shot for a few cycles. It seemed like I was producing follicles but there was no resulting pregnancy. We moved on and did a few more tests to find that I have low AMH. Our options became to continue the Letrozole with trigger, IVF with my own eggs, or IVF with donor eggs. We haven't started IVF yet so I can't really say what the results are.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I have zero negative comments about the nursing staff. The three nurses that I've seen have all been amazing.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
My insurance paid a portion of each visit so I can't really give an idea of what care looks like without insurance. I can say that one IVF cycle is going to cost around $6500 out of pocket with insurance paying 80% and not including medications.
Describe Travis McCoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Dr. McCoy is strongly against transferring more than one embryo for me.

How did you do this month? Do you have any questions?"

Every month when I start my period I call. They then send in my famara to my local pharmacy and my gonal f / ovidrel injections to Mandel's pharmacy. On days 3- 8 I take famara, on days 6-9 I take my gonal f injections. On day 10 I go in for an ultrasound ( because I'm an early ovulater) if I have mature follicles they will give me my ovidrel injections. I then go back 24hr later for my IUI procedure. One week from then I go to get blood work done to check my progesterone level to make sure I ovulated. A week later I am to take a pregnancy test.

He [Dr. McCoy] was honest with us from the beginning and was very helpful along the way. He never gave us false hope but he made sure he did all he could do. He explained things in a manner that we understood and was VERY attentive. He took his time at each doctor's visit espcially once I became pregnant.... We started out with me taking letrazole at the medium dosage and when that didn't produce the results we wanted he put me on the highest dosage.
Each and every person we dealt with [at PREG] were nice and very helpful. They always responded back to our phone calls or emails. They made us feel comfortable and always encouraged us and greeted us with a smile.... Our insurance did not cover the IVF expenses but it did cover the doctor appointments and ultrasounds. We had to pay $90 for each trigger shot. IUI cost us $475. The total cost for our IVF was around $17,000. PREG does offer financial options if you meet the requirements.

Describe the protocols Travis McCoy used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We started out with me taking letrazole at the medium dosage and when that didn't produce the results we wanted he put me on the highest dosage. I had to inject the trigger shot each month. He also put my husband on clomid due to low sperm mobility and count. We weren't getting a positive test with timed intercourse so we done three IUI's. Dr. Mccoy had high hopes for the last one but it resulted in yet another negative pregnancy test. He told us we could look into IVF because he felt that was going to be our best best. We started IVF fertility drugs and I was put on higher quantities due to my past dosages not being enough with letrazole. After the first round of IVF I became pregnant and we now have a 3month old baby girl.

Low dose hcg and micro dose Lupton produced 5 eggs 2 were mature non made it ( we chose iui with donor because male factor then mini if because she knew I don't produce a lot of eggs

Dr. Fru is a positive, good-humored person...As a man, I felt incredibly awkward in this process...[she]made me super comfortable and I felt like I could ask her anything I needed...She was attentive to our questions, tolerated my nervous jokes, and generally felt like an old friend rather than some aloof expert...We did 4 rounds of medication-assisted natural attempts, and then 4 rounds of IUI.

How was your experience with Karenne Fru at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
As a man, I felt incredibly awkward in this process. We men somehow grow up learning almost nothing about cycles and how pregnancy really happens. Dr. Fru made me super comfortable and I felt like I could ask her anything I needed.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Karenne Fru at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I don’t think you need advice, other than don’t be intimidated by it. Just go and do it. Get the process started.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Karenne Fru at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?

We did 4 rounds of medication-assisted natural attempts, and then 4 rounds of IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I interacted very little with the nurses and much less than my wife. The majority of my interaction was when I would drop off my semen samples or deposits. They don’t have a great process for this, I feel. Handing over a paper bag with a cup in it in the front lobby felt a little too public for my comfort.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
It’s nice. Clean. Nothing too fancy. People are generally nice. There are a lot of notes up on the walls from people who have had success. And lots of pictures of babies. When you meet with the doctor, you meet in their office, not an exam room, so it’s a little more laid back feeling.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Karenne Fru at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
My insurance covered our treatment so it was very affordable from the financial perspective.

We always felt like we were in good hands [with Dr. Payne] and he did a great job explaining what to expect. I appreciated his thorough instructions and clear cut planning. He also has a sensational bedside manner. It was also easy to set up our appointments with him...I was prescribed clomid on day 3 or my cycle for 5 days, I believe. Then, scheduled ultrasounds until i triggered. Then IUI was preformed.
The staff [at PREG] really gets to know you which makes the entire experience less stressful. The only weakness I would say is that they pushed IVF after 3 tries of IUI. I got pregnant on the 4th. That was the only time I felt like they were treating me as a “number”...It was fairly expensive. Most insurance does not cover the cost for LGBTQ fertility issues...Mary Elizabeth was usually the nurse doing all of my ultrasounds and the actual IUI procedure. She was always professional, but showed an incredible amount of compassion.

He [Dr. Nichols] has now met with me on 3 occasions and each time presents everything in a clear manner and answers all of my questions. ... He completed several tests and labs prior to starting treatment. We started with medication and following each cycle I would have an ultrasound and labs. After this was unsuccessful, we met and discussed IUI. We increased medications and attempted IUI. However, these were last unsuccessful, so we met again and though IVF was recommended we are unable to afford this, so we changed the course of treatment to just include an increase in medications.

My doctor [Dr. John Nichols] was very direct and to the point. He did explain our future needs or possible paths needed (IVF). He was very familiar with all my losses and record information. Each visit was relatively short and to the point, but very informative.... I was forst put on chlomid and had a allergic reaction. I was later put on Letrizol for 3 more consecutive months. I cannot remember the dosage but for cycle days 3-7. All cycles we're evaluated and none were a result in pregnancy. We attempted to concieve naturally with help of Letrizol.
Staff friendly, clean environment [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group-Asheville]. Wish had further testing ? Checked hormones? Or had answered to my fertility issues. I'm sure age but wish was more I could have done. A way to increase my progesterone levels, hormone balance etc... I was told to go straight to IVF...My progesterone was found low on a Friday...was told I needed progesterone and didn't get meds untill that following Monday. I had a failed pregnancy that week from low progesterone.

Dr. McCoy was compassionate. He only speaks what is necessary and is very calm. He draws pictures to give us a visual of the procedures. He understands out infertility problems and made sure our needs were met...I was given ovulation medications and my husband was given the clomids. Dr. McCoy takes his time to be sure you're educated and aware. As a single female, I was fearful of being judged. That wasn't the case at all. All my options were layed out and discussed and a plan in going forward was made. He made me feel comfortable and hopeful...I did three rounds of IUI with injectables and donor sperm. Gonal F and a trigger shot on day 12...
[PREG nurses] Caring, knowledgeable, and veryresponsive to emails and questions...Business office has not been as "on it" as the nurses, but none the less, still very adequate. Dr. Payne's care, and bedside manners were excellent. His way of explaining things were so well understood, I never had to question much of anything he was saying. He's blunt, and straight to the point, but yet he's also very compassionate. I wish I could've kept him as my doctor throughout my whole pregnancy (which was a success through IVF) From a 1-10 my overall experience with Dr. Payne would definitely be a 10 and my husband and I will be going back to him, and the PREG staff for baby #2!
I was very pleased with most of the nursing staff [at PREG- Asheville] especially Kelsey Forbes! I saw her most of the time in the Asheville office, and her care was always excellent! She has such a comforting disposition about her, and I knew I could always ask her anything (even if it was crazy) and I would get a pleasant, and helpful answer.... The clinic itself is very warming, and calming which in my opinion is very important to patients going through infertility because the whole process itself can be very overwhelming, so it's nice to come into a clean, and non hectic environment were all the staff are friendly and you feel like you're going to receive good quality care!

Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I was very pleased with most of the nursing staff especially Kelsey Forbes! I saw her most of the time in the Asheville office, and her care was always excellent! She has such a comforting disposition about her, and I knew I could always ask her anything (even if it was crazy) and I would get a pleasant, and helpful answer.

He [Dr. Nichols] was very nice, respectful and open.... Did not get to see him every visit. Clinic was expensive due to out of pocket costs. However when we did see him he was nice and respectful especially since we were LGBT. I wish we had money to keep trying. We weren’t sure we could go Straight to IVF OR SIMPLY IVF instead of IUI. It has a very low success rate. So we only have tried IUI. He was polite and respectful to our needs
It is an Expensive clinic [PREG] however to have a child when we are unable to physically make a child ourself would be worth it l and our greatest accomplishment. Dr. McCoy was extremely kind, empathic and encouraging...ask as many questions as you can.[he] is more than willing to answer anything, and even stay late with you if necessary...We were advised to try Clomid for a few rounds...We began our first round of IUI by switching to Femara...I felt human because in our IVF consult I was told I don’t qualify for reimbursement because of my weight...We made the decision to take a break and I have been able to successfully loose the necessary weight.
[nurse of PREG] She answers questions, sends personal emails and is just overall fantastic...Facility is clean, professional and warm...Costs were reasonable. 80$ co pays, 500$ IUI procedures...[Dr. McCoy] has conveyed his opinion that only a single embryo is really necessary, given my age...He clearly has been in the business a long time and is very knowledgeable as well as empathic to each patients situation
How was your experience with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Travis is kind, friendly and welcoming. He explains things very well and clearly cares about his patients. We spent limited time with him as the nurses performed all our IUI procedures, but overall we were very impressed and look forward to continuing to work with him
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
The one piece of advice I could give is ask as many questions as you can. Dr Mcoy is more than willing to answer anything, and even stay late with you if necessary.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr Mcoy was very warm and welcoming. He clearly has been in the business a long time and is very knowledgeable as well as empathic to each patients situation. His end goal is always to give the couple trying to conceive a healthy baby. I felt human because in our IVF consult I was told I don’t qualify for reimbursement because of my weight. Dr Mcoy was extremely kind, empathic and encouraging. I have successfully lost the weight and we are ready to go for it!
Describe the protocols Travis McCoy used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We came to Dr Mcoy after trying for 1 year unsuccessful on our own. We were advised to try Clomid for a few rounds (4) and in detail we were explained all our options and what a relatively normal infertility process looks like. Medication is a common starting point, and so we unsuccessfully gave it 4 rounds. My husband had some potential male factor issues, dealing with inconsistency in his number of sperm produced and possibly quality. We began our first round of IUI by switching to Femara. My husbands frost sperm count of the fist day of IUI was not good enough for a transfer. But, the next 3 rounds were decent numbers . 20-30k if I remember correctly. Unfortunately all were unsuccessful. We then had a consult for IVF which Mcoy agreed was a reasonable next step, though we could have tried IUI a few more times if we wanted. Unfortunately we did not qualify for the rebate program and the only thing that was hindering us that we could actually control was my weight. It was humiliating, but eye opening. We made the decision to take a break and I have been able to successfully loose the necessary weight. We are ready to hopefully have another consult and proceed with IVF.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Mary Elizabeth)
Mary Elizabeth was very warm, kind and helpful. She was soft spoken, empathic and gentle. I appreciated her more than she will ever know. She answers questions, sends personal emails and is just overall fantastic.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Strengths - Doctors and nurses are fantastic. Facility is clean, professional and warm. I feel safe, valued and I trust the professionals. Weaknesses - Admin staff - not overly friendly. Somewhat scattered and seemingly a little disorganized.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Costs were reasonable. 80$ co pays, 500$ IUI procedures.
Describe Travis McCoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Mcoy has conveyed his opinion that only a single embryo is really necessary, given my age. My husband and I ultimately agree and understand. We love the idea of twins, but understand the risks associated with multiples and we want to be as safe and healthy as possible.

I felt that he [Dr. John Payne] was very knowledgeable with infertility treatments and had reviewed my case before we arrived. However, I slightly felt like a number and like we were being pushed to pick a procedure that day...[he]suggested that we try a round or two of IUI with a trigger shot if we wanted. However, he strongly pushed IVF because it has a better success rate.
The nursing staff [of PREG] was very kind and answered any questions that we had throughout our appointment...We only had an initial consultation and testing. The consultation was $125 and the labs were $268. Our insurance does not cover any infertility treatments therefore, the IUI would have cost around $3000 with the trigger shot and IVF would have cost around $20,000.

I think this is a well run clinic overall. I was a little thrown off when I paid more for a nurse to do my IUI than I did for a physician. I wasn’t happy about that. At times it’s confusing when I call and it routes to the Greenville office. It’s not that big of a deal though.

I guess the cost is reasonable. Considering the amount of debt I’m in though.... fertility treatments are pricey.
