Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

We had plenty of kind, face to face, contact [with Dr. James Holman]. I was completely convinced in Dr. Hoilman's approach...When we entered treatment with him we were feeling light in spite of so much we had gone through...Most treatments were administered by nurses, and that was fine. I always felt like were were in good hands...He will listen to you and explain whatever you need...We used Clomid and IUI...I always felt like we were moving forward
This clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] is worth the time and money. Please consider going here if you are considering Fertility Treatments. The whole process is so extremely personal and emotional I can barely remember a thing about it all. One of the things I do remember is relief being there in contrast to the other treatment facilities we sought. I always felt like we were moving forward there...[nurses were] very kind and caring. They were always eager to answer questions.

[Dr. Travis McCoy is] Realistic and willing to answer all questions. Transparent which I appreciated, did not aim to sugar coat anything, but delivered evidence based answers and explanations. He performed a laparoscopy for endometriosis and I recovered wonderfully.... Individual treatment plan, realistic expectations set, good listener and evidence based. Nurses have always been warm, welcoming, and caring.

He [Dr. James Holman] was warm and encouraging...Worth seeing. Knowledgeable and kind. I felt like I could ask questions and was reassured that he would adjust treatment if we needed to. We went multiple times to have imaging to make sure the eggs were growing and he was calm and made sure we felt comfortable with his course of treatment. He kept us informed... I can't put a dollar amount on him. He was worth everything!
There are no weaknesses [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group]. They know you by name when you walk in, they are used to seeing you time and time again. They have supported us after the birth and have contests and a great Facebook page where they support families. I cannot imagine going elsewhere...He [Dr. James Holman] was warm and encouraging...Worth seeing. Knowledgeable and kind.

She [Dr. Lisa Cookingham] is friendly and comprehensive in her plan, explaining the tests she wanted to run, and answering questions I had. She also was great during followup for explaining the plan going forward. I did not see her for my HSG or IUI procedure but she was in touch following both visits via the portal/phone.
[PREG - Columbia] Strengths are definitely the nurses and the ease of getting someone on the phone or having questions answered in the portal...Weaknesses were the initial financial explanation for self pay patients...They were very welcoming and accepting of my want to use donor sperm to get pregnant as a single, queer person.

I did not see her for my HSG or IUI procedure but she was in touch following both visits via the portal/phone.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Lisa Cookingham at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Come with questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Lisa Cookingham at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
She spent time during my consultation to answer any questions. She is very charismatic and friendly. She has since been available to answer questions via phone and the portal.
Describe the protocols Lisa Cookingham used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
After Day 3 testing and an HSG, I did medicated, monitored cycles. I took letrozole (pill) from days 3 to 7, then had an ultrasound and trigger (Ovidrel). Ghe plan is to repeat the same protocol for IUI #2 and #3 if needed before moving to IVF.
How competent was Lisa Cookingham at LGBTQ+ care?
She wasn't phased at all that I'm a single woman trying to get pregnant on my own. My sexuality was never questioned or given a raised eye. I felt that Dr Cookingham was accepting that I just wanted to get pregnant and never questioned my motives.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Michaella)
Michaella is Dr Cookingham's nurse assigned to me. She answers the portal questions a lot and she was the one who did my monitoring ultrasound and did my trigger. She was also there during my insemination. Very happy with Michaella and her attentiveness and thoroughness in answers. She pays attention and is very responsive.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Weaknesses were the initial financial explanation for self pay patients, especially after my insurance coverage changed between the consultation and mt IUI. It took some emails to get them to rerun my insurance showing that I do have coverage. Strengths are definitely the nurses and the ease of getting someone on the phone or having questions answered in the portal. Someone has always answered the phone or called me back when they said they would and it's very reassuring when you have minute questions.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Lisa Cookingham at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
HSG $600 Labs $330 (out of pocket through insurance) Day 3 Ultrasound $200 Monitoring ultrasound $180 IUI $500 Initial consultation $200 Phone followup $50 Ovidrel $100 Letrozole $3
How competent was Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group at LGBTQ+ care?
They were very welcoming and accepting of my want to use donor sperm to get pregnant as a single, queer person.
Describe your experience using 3rd party reproduction (donor eggs, donor sperm, or gestational carrier) at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I used donor sperm. I had no problems getting paperwork signed for different sperm banks and had no problems with sperm delivery or thaws.

[Dr. Edward Tarnawa is] Knowledgeable. Down to earth and willing to explain the mechanics of fertility in laymen’s terms when pressed. I do wish there was more focus on wholistic wellness for fertility including nutrition, exercise and mental health...Have questions prepared before you go. By nature the process can often feel like overwhelming and the Dr usually had one foot out the door before you have time to sort through all information.
[Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] Felt like a doctor’s office and not like a factory. Most of the staff used my name, smiled and greeted us and made time for my questions...Professional clean, non-chaotic environment. Great team of kind nurses...Weaknesses: PREG needs a formal guide for customers that explains different meds, each part of process, protocols in detail and gives context. At times, I felt I learned more from to the web than I should’ve. While the phlebotomist was sweet, we often had to ask Nurses to do my bloodwork, as we often had trouble drawing blood on the 1st or 2nd try…which honestly caused more anxiety and stress than I needed on more than one occasion. Wish I knew more about experience in the labs. I probably would have skipped PGTA if I known more about it and its true purpose.

Dr. Cookingham was not only incredibly knowledgeable but a very caring doctor. She cited recent studies when discussing treatment options and giving her recommendations but was also open-minded and I never felt "shut out" or not in control as a patient. Overall I was very impressed by her level of care and expertise...made an effort to connect on a personal level and came across very warm and compassionate during every interaction. She made sure I was comfortable during every procedure and really came across as caring deeply about her patients.
I was highly impressed with PREG Columbia. The clinic kept to appointment times very well and I rarely sat in the waiting room for more than a few minutes. All staff I encountered were professional and friendly, from the receptionist, to lab staff and nurses. We never had any billing issues or issues reaching the clinic. When we had an issue with my insurance denying a specific medication they were very helpful in assisting me with obtaining the medication with as little out of pocket cost as possible. The whole staff kept everything running smoothly.

I was on a standard antagonist protocol for my retrieval, 3 months of endometriosis suppression with lupron depot and standard frozen embryo transfer protocols. I feel confident that had my situation called for it, Dr. Cookingham would have adjuster my protocols/treatment as needed.

We spent roughly $8,500 for a package including a freeze-all egg retrieval with ICSI and a frozen embryo transfer. Medications for egg retrieval and FET were another $1300. Our insurance covered about half of our IVF expenses.

Dr. Tarnawa always sat down with us to help us understand the things that needed to be done and afterwards, why they happened a certain way. We were always greeted and asked how we were. How was your experience with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I absolutely loved being Dr. Tarnawa's patient. He had the biggest heart and most compassion I have ever seen in any doctor. He leaves no stone unturned when he is making sure that everyone of his patients has the best possibly for success in whatever they may be trying to achieve.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
The best advice I can give is to let Doctor Tarnawa do whatever test or procedure he believes is necessary. No matter how much you don't want it or even if you think it is unnecessary. He is trying to give you the best chance possible.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?

Describe the protocols Edward Tarnawa used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
When I first started seeing Doctor Tarnawa I was all but ready to start an IUI cycle with my former doctor. At our first appointment he sat down with my husband and I and went over what he thought of our previous plans and what he believed should be done. After discussions we decided since I am a carrier of DMD that we would go with an IVF cycle with PGT. Being overweight I needed to reach a certain BMI in order for the IVF to be done. Once I achieved the weight goal and went through all the testing he required, ultrasounds, genetic test for my parents, and medication for embryo retrieval. He retrieved 3 eggs, 2 became embryos, and 1 egg came back genetically normal. He found that I had a uterine polyp and preformed the removal of it. I went through the medication procedure and he transferred my one embryo, which didn't take. He checked in on my husband and I afterwards and gave us hope for the future.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Typically his approach is single embryo transfer for lessening the risk of multiples...Dr. Tarnawa is both empathetic and factual. Meaning, he helps my husband and I understand the steps involved in our plan detail by detail...We used a Clomid protocol at first for IUI. That gave me a bad headache so we switched to Letrozole. For IVF we used a more aggressive protocol..
This is a newer branch of PREG so I think they’re working on the need for more staff or equipment to be able to do more of the IVF procedures at the Lowcountry location. The only comment I’d make is for my husband. When we have gone in for his sample he said the rooms are not very comfortable for him and there isn’t usually tissues or sink or anything for him...my main nurse and is just such a fast responder and compassionate human
How was your experience with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Tarnawa is both empathetic and factual. Meaning, he helps my husband and I understand the steps involved in our plan detail by detail. He has drawn pictures for us and taken phone calls to help us feel good about our decisions and walk us through the facts while being very patient and understanding.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Be flexible. Just because there’s a protocol in place doesn’t mean it’s an exact science. We have changed our plans a little but that’s all it is. Readjusting and taking small steps. Never be afraid to ask your questions! That’s what they’re there for.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Both Dr. Tarnawa and nurses working with me never ever forget my case details. They’re emphatic and also realistic and help us understand the science and “why” which I appreciate. I have never felt unheard and there’s always a plan.
Describe the protocols Edward Tarnawa used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We used a Clomid protocol at first for IUI. That gave me a bad headache so we switched to Letrozole. For IVF we used a more aggressive protocol. BC 5 days before starting my new cycle and Gonal f and low dose Hcg. I did that antagonist protocol for 4 days and unfortunately a lead follicle took off. Instead this time we are using estrace and omnitrope with Gonal f and hcg to help the follicles grow together. We start this round tomorrow.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Katie Walker)
Katie is my main nurse and is just such a fast responder and compassionate human. I feel so comfortable with her and know that when I write in or call she always responds that day and gets me in when needed. The whole staff is lovely and I feel like they all care and just make you feel good in a tough situation.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I was able to get in so much sooner than the other local place. This is a newer branch of PREG so I think they’re working on the need for more staff or equipment to be able to do more of the IVF procedures at the Lowcountry location. The only comment I’d make is for my husband. When we have gone in for his sample he said the rooms are not very comfortable for him and there isn’t usually tissues or sink or anything for him. But that’s it.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
It was about $12k or $15k for IVF with genetic testing. I don’t know that that includes meds. IUI was around $1000 first time and $600 the next without the HSG test.
Describe Edward Tarnawa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Typically his approach is single embryo transfer for lessening the risk of multiples. I don’t see an issue with this if it’s a safer approach.

Dr. Tarnawa and I only spoke by phone due to him being in a different city. I spent a good bit of the time speaking with the nurses he had in charge of the IVF process. He would keep a close eye on all my scans and work done and adjust things as needed based on results. I felt confident that he was doing what was best for the optimal results...If you are not going to the Charleston, SC be prepared to be seen by another Dr. instead of him, although all results do go to him and he makes the final decisions...
My Nurses [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] did a great job at communicating with me throughout the process. I felt I could reach them at anytime throughout the process whenever I needed to. They answered every question I had...wish I got more information on the embryos as they were developing and why some may not have made it. While I only had one it would have been good to know what happened to the few others that started to show signs of developing...

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
He was great with explaining everything to us when we started with him. It was hard to communicate or see him while going through the process due to being in two different cities, but he always made sure there was someone to take care of us in his absence.
Describe the protocols Edward Tarnawa used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
There were a few set backs in my process. The first occured whenever we were completing egg retrieval. My hormonal levels were not where they were suppose to be, he then waited another week to see if my follicles would grow even more and adjusted my medication. That seemed to help a lot. We also had a set back before transfer time, where my hormone levels and my lining of my uterus were not quite where they needed to be. He then decided to wait a week to give it more time before we moved forward.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
My Nurses did a great job at communicating with me throughout the process. I felt I could reach them at anytime throughout the process whenever I needed to. They answered every question I had.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I thought the staff was very friendly and did a great job at explaining each thing that was happening through the process. I felt that they showed great empathy as my results were not where I wanted them to be, but they were thurough in being sure to set up another appointment to help explain things to me. There are a few things I wish were a little more available and there for patients. The first is I wish they had some way to help patients when the IVF process fails to help them financially be able to afford the process. Having to save 12,000 and hand it over between procedures and medicine is very hard to do, then to have something fail and feel like you have to do it all over again is gut wrenching; especially if you only had one embryo to start. I also wish I got more information on the embryos as they were developing and why some may not have made it. While I only had one it would have been good to know what happened to the few others that started to show signs of developing. After handing over $6,000 to them I felt like they then had me come in for more tests, this was fine but that money I felt should have been included in the original price, it was stressful knowing that for the next 2-3 times I came I still owed them money a week after almost cleaning out my savings.

[Dr. Travis McCoy] gave me his email and told me to email him at anytime...did a nice job explaining things and adjusting the plan in attempt to get our desired results. there was a few times I was uncertain of what would happen next or what to do next but I felt that fell under his nurses responsibilities instead of his...My husband was put on clomid for low sperm count and mobility currently awaiting the results for that. I was put on a Lupron Depo shot for 3 months to help with endometriosis. I was not retested for endometriosis but pains did go away.prior to finding out I had endometriosis he scheduled a biopsy which led to the results of finding out I had endometriosis.
The staff there [at PREG] are always very friendly. Everyone greets you and you're in the building with a nice smile. Once you've been there a couple of times they call you by name which makes you feel that there is a closer relationship there and makes you feel more welcome. They try to work you in with blood work as much as possible and give you answers promptly when possible. the biggest concern that I have was not knowing what was coming next or what to do next and timelines.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Catherine Burnes)
Catherine is very good about replying to emails although there were times I felt like I didn't know what to expect next or what to do. Therewas a time where an appointment with supposed to be scheduled but we were unaware of that which put us into a longer wait time. She is very nice. there are times I feel like we aren't giving information as far as what are labs are (numbers, lining thickness etc) but I'm not sure if that falls under her category or someone else's responsibility.

There was two different times that information was provided that was inaccurate. One time was telling me that it was unusual to not have any pregnancies with two transfers and that information was very upsetting but wants talkin to dr. McQueen he assured me that that was not rare and that has happened before. another time was when my husband had a seman analysis, we were initially told the wrong results. There has been at least once we're prescriptions were forgot to be faxed or called in

He [Dr. Edward Tarnawa] wasn't very personable, it was in/out treated like a number. Didn't feel like he was invested at all. Just going through the process...Overall we got what we paid for our beautiful son. However I feel the entire process was rushed and very systematic no one really connected with us personally...another doctor I'd never seen did the embryo transfer despite my doctor being there that day he didn't even speak to us or anything. I was just handed off.
Overall we got what we paid for our beautiful son. However I feel the entire process [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] was rushed and very systematic no one really connected with us personally it was like they asked what had to be asked, collected money along the way and that was that. I don't feel like ANYONE thorough the entire process truly cared about us or our situation or if it took or not. After my pregnancy was confirmed in office, I never even got so much as a call or email asking how it was going, if I ever delivered or anything.
How was your experience with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
E.T did my actual egg retrieval, then my transfer was moved from frozen to fresh and another doctor did the embryo transfer. (Even though E.T was there the day of the transfer, he didn't talk to me or tell me another doctor was doing the transfer)
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
He does his job but thats all, not personable or friendly.

He wasn't very personable, it was in/out treated like a number. Didn't feel like he was invested at all. Just going through the process.
Describe the protocols Edward Tarnawa used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
Was told IVF was the only route for us (I believe cause it cost more, it is what was pushed) Male factor infertility. So, we did egg and sperm retrieval and embryo transfer at 5days (was told we'd do frozen but it was changed last minute and we were never told why). Overall we got what we paid for our beautiful son. However I feel the entire process was rushed and very systematic no one really connected with us personally it was like they asked what had to be asked, collected money along the way and that was that. I don't feel like ANYONE thorough the entire process truly cared about us or our situation or if it took or not. After my pregnancy was confirmed in office, I never even got so much as a call or email asking how it was going, if I ever delivered or anything.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Everyone was just doing there JOB, no one got personal.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Overall they do what they are paid to do but that's it. Show compassion, this process is stressful and expensive. Don't just throw paperwork at people and tell them to figure it out. Stop treating people like a number. Initially we had our consult with a "bait" person. really passionate and sweet and personable. Yall I never seen or talked to that women again after signing those papers. Then came the treated like a number in/out appointments where no one really cared there all just doing there job.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Not cheap, paid up front or payment plans made before being seen. Roughly $25,000 overall. You can either pay upfront or go in debt and "finance" the entire process. Medications are paid upfront.
Describe Edward Tarnawa's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I wanted multi was told it was my first so they were only willing to try one. multi was not an option.

I was scheduled for frozen transfer, last minute was switched to five day, then another doctor I'd never seen did the embryo transfer despite my doctor being there that day he didn't even speak to us or anything. I was just handed off.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
After me and my husband's last failed IUI we had a consultant with Dr. Tarnawa and he talked with us about the IVF process. Dr. Tarnawa took his time to explain the process and even drew a picture to help us visually see, since I am a visual person. Going into the consultation I was nervous and was thinking of the worst, but Dr. Tarnawa made me and my husband feel comfortable and we did not feel like a number. When we left the consultation we felt hopeful.
The clinic [PREG] was very flexible and they made special adjustments for me due to my work schedule. I was always greeted by the front desk staff and they would automatically check me in. One weakness was that the clinic did lose a staff member that handled insurance/billing and she was really good. ... The nurses were very patient and kind. They responded back to calls in a timely manner.
How was your experience with Edward Tarnawa at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
The first time I met with Dr. Tarnawa was during my chemical pregnancy. It was urgent that I came in for a ulItrasound to make sure it was not ectopic. It was the holiday season and my primary doctor was not available. Dr. Tarnawa was very patient and kind. He explained everything before it happened and was proactive with the next steps that needed to happen. My primary doctor Dr. Nichols who was great developed my treatment strategies. Most communication and plans were discussed with his nurse.

Dr T [Tarnawa] is AMAZING. I suffered a previous miscarriage, and am a very “needy” and anxious patient. He takes time to explain everything in detail, and takes time to answer any questions and concerns you may have. He doesn’t sugar coat things and is very straight forward which I like, but has a very warm bedside manor.... At PREG, I only see Dr T as he is always in Columbia.
Love this clinic! Organized, professional, clean, efficient. At PREG you are ALWAYS treated like a person and NEVER like a number. Everyone from the sweet lab tech, Ms Jenny, (I hate having blood drawn and she comforts me) to the nursing staff to the doctors are nothing short of amazing. If you live in the midlands area, I would 10/10 recommend PREG. Trust me-I’ve been to other clinics and this far surpasses that!

He takes time to explain everything in detail, and takes time to answer any questions and concerns you may have. He doesn’t sugar coat things and is very straight forward which I like, but has a very warm bedside manor. He is very very intelligent and I completely trust his opinion in my treatment. I am currently pregnant from my first round of IVF. He is monitoring me very closely, and I feel as though I have the best doctor in Columbia. I went to another clinic in lexington that also had a location in Charleston. You have to rotate doctors there, or travel to see the same one. At PREG, I only see Dr T as he is always in Columbia.

Never did he [Dr. McCoy] pressure us into doing anything that we were against...he listened to my concerns and always knew me and my husband by name. He always had a bright smile on his face when we saw him... My first appointment with him I explained some of the symptoms I was having, to ensure it was not another medical issue he performed an ultrasound, this was confirmation it was not what we previously thought. This was a small step in the right direction, this also showed me that he listened to me and truly cared about me as an individual and not just another person.
When I initially schedule a consultation with PREG I had some major anxieties about the whole process...staff welcomed me with open arms and were very comforting during the whole process...not only are they friendly, but they are caring. In times of heartbreak they were a shoulder to cry on and an ear to vent to...Emilie [nurse] is caring, understanding, nonjudgmental and has a strong ability to empathize with her patients no matter what life threw at us. She was non-judgmental, a very good emotional support and counselor to me as patient throughout this entire difficult time for me trying to conceive.
How was your experience with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
When I initially schedule a consultation with PREG I had some major anxieties about the whole process. I never thought I would experience infertility given that I previously had children with no medical issues or complications. Dr. McCoy and his staff welcomed me with open arms and were very comforting during the whole process. My first appointment with him I explained some of the symptoms I was having, to ensure it was not another medical issue he performed an ultrasound, this was confirmation it was not what we previously thought. This was a small step in the right direction, this also showed me that he listened to me and truly cared about me as an individual and not just another person. Dr. McCoy explained every procedure in detail and ensured that I understood what direction we were going in all of this, this gave me the confidence to trust in his abilities. Dr. McCoy never made me feel like the possibility of getting pregnant and carrying a child was out of the window. Even when we experienced three failed IUIs and two failed FETs, he reassured me that my journey wasn't over. This is just a storm on the way to my rainbow. I really felt like he cared about my pain, anxiety, frustration, and heartbreak. I also would like to mention his staff, not only are they friendly, but they are caring. In times of heartbreak they were a shoulder to cry on and an ear to vent to. I would highly recommend Dr. McCoy and his staff to anyone who asked.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Be open and honest with how you are feeling, what you expect and be open to change.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Please he listened to my concerns and always knew me and my husband by name. He always had a bright smile on his face when we saw him.

Her communication skills were solid, her compassion was over the top and her empathy was indescribable. There was never a time that I had a question Emilie wouldn't hesitate to give me the answer or ask my doctor and get back with me.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
PREG Columbia atmosphere is very inviting and comfortable. We were able to get appointments and/or procedures scheduled with no hassle. I was always able to be open and honest with the staff about my feelings on any occasion I had an appointment. The rooms were always ready and clean when I arrived. My only weaknesses would be Dr McCoy wasn't always at this location.
Describe Travis McCoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Dr McCoy agreed to allowing us to do multiples because of my age. Never did he pressure us into doing anything that we were against.

I only saw Dr. McCoy twice. Every other time it was a nurse. When I did see him he was sweet, kind, caring, and his bed side manner was spot on. You could tell that he knew exactly what he was talking about and he was all about results.... He talked to me about the risks. Then there were scans, pills, and shots. There was never a week that we were not working on making a baby.
The clinic [PREG] is very clean and always feels like home when you walk into the door. Their weakness would be communication. The financial staff doesn't talk to the front desk and no one really communicates about patients and what is happening throughout the clinic.... The nursing staff with PREG is absolutely amazing. 100% every time. When you have a question and they are not readily available to call you they will call you back

Listen, listen, listen and always remember to ask questions. He will never lead you astray and though he is blunt he will tell you exactly what you don't want to hear at the right moment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
When they saw me starting to break down because of the news they made me feel like family. Like things were going to be alright and we were in this together.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
For one scan it was 135 dollars. My husbands semen analysis was 65 dollars. My 12 day scan was over 100 dollars. My first initial appointment was over 90 dollars. Then the medicine was 9 dollars every time.
What specific things went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
When I went to get my scan done after medicine they told me to start a new medicine that same day and they would call it into the pharmacy. When I left I went straight the pharmacy but they said they didn't have a prescription for me. By this time PREG was already closed and I couldn't start the medicine until the next day, unfortunately that was too late to start it for the procedures and it set us back. So now I have to start over next month. Also, prices went up and no one communicated that with me. Instead they just had front desk personnel tell me it was not their fault I could not pay. Though I was able to come up with the money eventually.

I have felt that she [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] cared about my emotional and physical health. She was realistic and upfront about our situation. After years of loss and suffering it makes a difference when a physician allows you to cry and share your hopes and dreams. When you feel that you dreams are shattering you need a physician that allows you to have hope or deal with reality.
The clinic staff [at PREG] is always friendly and helpful. The clinic itself is always clean, peaceful and quiet. The wait time is usually realistic and they provide updates as needed. The office is cold so bring a sweater.... The nursing staff has always been friendly and engaging... The plan was to ensure I was healthy and ready for the process. I had surgery to remove endometriosis and fibroids to make my uterus and ready as possible. I then will begin try a round of IUI, my choice. However, Dr. Whitman has recommended IVF or surrogacy due to my many recurrent losses, but that cost is beyond my family’s ability.

Dr. Whitman is honest and upfront. If you expect for a doctor to tell you what you want to hear versus the truth, she is not the one for you. If you want a real perspective, guidance and support the Dr. Whitman is it!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Whitman recognized our pain and allowed me to drain my emotions. She did not rush through our sessions and she never made me feel like my questions were stupid. She recognized that for the last 8 years I have been suffering emotionally and physically and needed a physician to really listen to me. She made me feel as if what I had to say was important . The previous physicians did not listen to me and made me feel as if I did not know my body.

Dr. McCoy was very responsive to my questions and needs. He was understanding of the restrictions of my job and worked with me to make my appointments and cycles work (ie phone visits when I could not make office visits). He is very honest about the difficulties we face and is willing to discuss the details of treatments so that I and my husband fully understand...Be sure and ask questions about how your treatment plan s tailored to you. Dr. McCoy is great at explaining this!
Welcoming and kind staff [at Peidmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group]. They are very responsive to questions and promptly return any calls. The clinic itself is very calming and quiet. I have had visits at both the Columbia ad Greenville clinic and think both are great! My advice to a new patient would be to be on time to appointments as they are very prompt. Oftentimes, you are called back for lab draws, nurses visits, etc within 5-10 minutes of arrival. This is great for scheduling your day and keeping your life on time.

IVF cycle: I have low ovarian reserve so my injection dosages where adjusted to try and stimulate as many follicles as possible. My husband unfortunately does not produce sperm so when he underwent testicular exploration to look for sperm, Dr. McCoy advised us to have a backup donor for my IVF cycle. I was closely monitored throughout the cycle with ultrasounds and my retrieval date was moved forward based on my progress. Unfortunately, our single fertilized egg arrested so I could not undergo embryo transfer. IUI: I was placed on high dose and prolonged course of letrozole in conjunction with Gonal F injection x3. Once again this was for my low ovarian reserve and trying to stimulate follicles. My first IUI was unsuccessful and I just completed my second insemination.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Very accessible and responsive to questions. Extremely understanding and supportive of me and my husband. I usually see the same nurses at each visit which is great for putting me at ease.

My insurance covers much of my fertility treatment costs. Office visit copays are usually less than $50. My IVF cycle was ~$4K upfront and IVF medications were ~$6K. I pay nearly nothing for the IUI cycles.

I felt that he [Dr. Edward Moore] did not communicate with me throughout the process and did not follow through with concerns that he said he would address. I was not forthcoming with information that would have been helpful earlier in the process. His lack of communication hampered my progress moving forward. I also felt he did not explore all options that were available to me but this is more likely due to his lack of experience.
Clinic [PREG- Columbia] did not have a warm atmosphere when you walked through the door. It is in an old remolded pharmacy. I felt I was not treated as an individual but as a number. The waiting room was not very inviting and usually had to wait for a while to be seen. They did not communicate with me when I reached out as I sent several emails but have not received an answer to my questions yet. The clinic
How was your experience with Edward Moore at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
He lacks experience that will likely improve over time. I felt that he did not communicate with me throughout the process and did not follow through with concerns that he said he would address. I was not forthcoming with information that would have been helpful earlier in the process. His lack of communication hampered my progress moving forward. I also felt he did not explore all options that were available to me but this is more likely due to his lack of experience. However, he could have consulted with other more experienced doctors and come up with a better plan. Initially, he seemed to be very knowledgeable but as time went on I began to realize that the advice he was providing was not sound advice based on evidence.

Gail is very knowledgeable in her field ... She and her team [PREG] listened to my questions and concerns - very kind and good bedside manner ... She was aggressive with treatment but not so much as to put my health in jeopardy. Very kind, but frank and good bedside manner. ... We tried timed intercourse which is least invasive, with medication as well as Iui cycles medicated.
Strengths: appointments were usually running on time and they always had a friendly receptionist. Whether in the lobby or on the phone they were always so courteous. They always remembered my name when I walked in the door... which is why I didn’t feel like a number. ... They have such a friendly staff - all around wonderful. They put me at ease during each ultrasound and procedure. And made me feel at peace. Many of the staff had been through fertility treatments and could really empathize with me.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group. (Assigned nurse: Emilie Smith)
Emilie was so responsive with any concern or question— if she was not available she had another nurse call right away. She was so good to me. I could not have made it without her!! Also the lab ladies are some of the best around. They have made each lab a joy and I look forward to seeing them. They are always so encouraging!!!

Dr. WHITMAN IS A VERY CARING , AND UNDERSTANDING DOCTOR THAT WILL TREAT YOU THE WAY WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED.... She is a very good , and caring doctor. She informed my husband and I on every step of the way.She explained everything to us in a gentle way. I will continue to go to her as long as we can. I highly recommend her to everyone!!
Weakness [for the Piedmont Reproductive Endo Group]I would say the communication between the staff is low, had to keep reminding them on things. The office staff seem to be lost sometimes with the communication with nurses ,and docs. Strength I would say they compassion they have with the patients.... My Protocol was Gonal F 225 units injection for 9 days , low dose hcg SQ injections 15 unirs a day for 9 days. I started off using microdose Lupton am/pm at 20 units twice daily for 12 days. My hubby and I took keflex 500mg twice a day for 19 days. Took baby aspirin 81mg once daily. Had 2 baseline ultrasound s, and 2 blood tests. Took Medrol 16mg once a day the day after egg retrivel till few days adter transfer. I took a 5mg valium and Feldene 10mg an hour before transfer. The valium did not help , I was still tense and felt everything. I started the progesterone 50mg once a day injection the day after egg retrivel surgery till my 14 day blood test that was negitive.

Dr. Whitman is very knowledgeable. She can communicate complicated doctor talk with regular small town folk who are unable to be doctors. She makes the women feel comfortable which is very important when it comes to a procedure like this....She expressed her concern with the multiple embryo transfer with the amount of transfer she has that turn out to split and become twins. We want two children so we want to place two embryos and that is all she said with that concern.
It’s a nice small clinic [PREG] that is well maintained and clean. It’s a down home feeling that relaxes you when you enter the building. It seems suitable to perform the procedures and good enough to store embryos as well....Great staff. They communicate the doctors wishes well by phone and email....Dr. Whitman is very knowledgeable. She seems very successful and we are looking forward to her performing this cycle to try and have my first child or children!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I would recommend going to her no matter how far the distance. They will know they got a good doctor the first time around and not the second or third.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
From the very beginning, Dr. Whitman made me and my wife feel like she was there to assist us in having a child. The past doctors have done procedures when my wife’s hormonal levels were too high and it resulted in 10’s of thousands of dollars down the drain. Dr. Whitman makes us feel that we will be successful this next cycle of IVF.
Describe the protocols Gail Whitman-Elia used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We haven’t received the dosages and medicines yet. That is our next appointment on the 22nd of this month. But we were given a link to a protocol video summary that is not specific with dates but the process of how to read the schedule and take the medicines once we choose which ones.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Be prepared to receive news in a “tell it like it is” manner. There’s no sugar coating or interest in getting to know you as a person. He [Dr. Nichols] seems to want to get you in and then out and on to the next patient...The only thing we discussed on the consultation appointment is that I needed to come back and get Cycle day 3 blood work done to make some determinations...The doctors bedside manner needs work. He seemed very rushed and a little disorganized. He could have been a bit more gentle with his delivery of words. He did not seem terribly concerned with me as a patient.
They [nurses at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] were friendly and seemed caring, although they seemed VERY disorganized. They would call me to come back, then send me back to the front again while they sorted out a few things. It’s unprofessional and embarrassing really, seeing a staff being disorganized...It’s very clean looking and visually appealing on the inside on the front end. From the outside, it looks like an old Rite Aid or CVS converted into a clinic. The front end staff was very friendly and caring. The nurse who took my vitals was very loud and does not respect patient privacy.
How was your experience with John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
The doctor did not seem very concerned about me as a patient. He does not have a gentle manner with the way he communicates. I can say he was definitely a straight-shooter with what he had to tell me as far as my chances being lower of becoming pregnant due to age. I did appreciate him being candid and honest, but I feel a doctor should always be compassionate and show a genuine caring interest in his patients.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of John Nichols at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?

  • Lost paperwork
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I selected lost paperwork because I don’t know what the deal was with why they kept calling me to the back and them dismissing me back up to the front, while they sorted out their issues on the back end.

I liked Dr. McCoy as a person and a doctor, but I didn't feel he was super aggressive about treating my infertility, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. He allowed my husband and I to steer the course through our fertility treatments, but a little more guidance may have been helpful at times... At 75% of my appointments/procedures I saw a different doctor or a nurse, but I was never told before I came that he wouldn't be present.
The costs I incurred were reasonable for the treatments received [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group]...The front desk staff doesn't seem to be trained in compassion for infertility issues. Also, their "financial counselors" are a joke. I made an appointment to find out my cost for an IVF, brought all of my insurance information. She couldn't tell me any exact costs on anything, and the range of costs to us was so broad that I might as well have just googled "how much does an IVF cost".

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
If you want to actually see Dr. McCoy at a visit, make sure to request that. At 75% of my appointments/procedures I saw a different doctor or a nurse, but I was never told before I came that he wouldn't be present.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I felt like he was very present during our appointments, but he didn't necessarily remember me or the specifics of my case from one appointment to the next.
Describe the protocols Travis McCoy used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
We used Femara on its own for several cycles. My previous doctor had only used Clomid, so he wanted to see how I responded to Femara. We did four cycles of IUI with the injectables, but no Femara, as he said the Femara would not make a difference. All cycles failed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I saw several different nurses during my years of treatment at PREG, and they ranged quite a bit. All were nice and professional, but some seemed much more "equipped" for dealing with infertility issues that others. I had two instances where a nurse performed the IUI instead of a doctor, and neither went very well. The first took almost 25 minutes to complete, because of my weird anatomy, and was very painful during and for a long time after. The last IUI I got at PREG was performed by a nurse, who actually couldn't complete it and had to get a doctor to finish the procedure. That one also took about 30 minutes, but while it was uncomfortable, it wasn't as painful as the first.
Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I feel like the doctors are a strength, but it's hard to know when you'll see your doctor, so most of the time you'll be dealing with the staff. The front desk staff doesn't seem to be trained in compassion for infertility issues. Also, their "financial counselors" are a joke. I made an appointment to find out my cost for an IVF, brought all of my insurance information. She couldn't tell me any exact costs on anything, and the range of costs to us was so broad that I might as well have just googled "how much does an IVF cost". I can't make a financial decision without any real information, so I decided not to move forward with the treatment with this clinic. The doctors do frequent seminars about infertility and treatments, and if you attend they give you a $250 gift certificate, but I was never able to use mine because they don't accept it toward most of the costs not covered by my insurance, and it expired before it was applicable toward any of my bills, and they absolutely would not extend the expiration date.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
The costs I incurred were reasonable for the treatments received.
What specific things went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
  • Lost paperwork
  • Failed to call with results
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
At the beginning of our treatment we had a lot of issues with staff, specifically not getting calls with results. Then when i would call to follow up it always seemed like they were scrambling to find our information. I got a call with someone else's results at one point. Luckily I knew the call wasn't for me because it wasn't applicable to our treatment at the time. There were no egregious errors, just general disorganization. To be fair, this did seem to improve over time.

Dr Payne was a wonderful doctor to work with. He was compassionate and thorough. He explained every procedure and what to expect. He understood any pain or discomfort and helped when needed. He worked with any personal insecurities.
The entire staff [at PREG] was wonderful,! One nurse I did have as little issue with. I passed out at home and then couldn't hold any fluids down after the retrieval. The nurse I spoke with didn't take care if calling in a script in a timely manner, and wasn't compassionate. I told her beforehand that I don't do well with anesthesia and wasn't taken seriously. Other than that, every nurse I came in contact with was phenomenal!! The ladies in the lab showed genuine concern and took the highest care with me, even though I'm prone to passing out from blood draws, they knew to lay me down and didn't take issue with it.

He was very personable. He related to us, rejoiced with us and gave us any hard information with understanding and Grace
Describe the protocols John Payne used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
The only struggle I had was from the anesthesia used for the retrieval. Everything else was fine. I don't remember all the specifics of medication used. I followed the outline as given.

Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
PREG twas a fabulous clinic to work with. They take time to talk with you prior to making a decision to use fertility treatments. They give you a cost estimate based on your insurance and then give you suggestions to help with cost reduction (applying for prescription assistance, etc). The front staff gets to know you by name so you are greeted when walking in the door. Everyone rejoices in your success with you and takes care of you when you hot road blocks.
Describe John Payne's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Dr Payne was very insistent on only transferring one embryo the first time as she was the highest possiblequality for a frozen embryo. He wouldn't transfer a second embryo since this was my first cycle and he wanted to do what was the safest for me and my child.
What specific things went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I told them I struggle with anesthesia. The nurse told me it wouldn't be a problem with the anesthesia they use for the retrieval. When I had trouble after, it took her the entire day to call in nausea meds and then after she said she sent it over (through fax), The pharmacy still hadnt received it. I had to ask her multiple times to call it in instead of faxing.
