Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

He [Dr. Travis McCoy] was so caring but at the same time realistic. When he felt it was no longer a good option for our goal of becoming pregnant he would tell us. He would still give us the option to continue what we were doing or to move to the next step. I would never question if he was wanting us to change due to he could make more money.... e was was there a doctor,as well as, a support person. When I would leave crying after any further complications or bad news he was there to help me through what ever was going on at the time. When we decided it was time to step away from infertility treatments for a while he supported us and promised he would do anything to help us when we were ready to return. I would recommend him to anyone and have recommended him to many people since, who have all felt the same.
They [Piedmont Reproductive Endo Group] are very patient centered which is one of their biggest strengths. They are very helpful and helped accommodate my crazy schedule. It did take a little bit to get my new patient appointment but never had any further issues getting an appointment when I needed it during my busy schedule. Their one weakness is that the doctors work in multiple offices and only work at the Columbia clinic certain days a week. This meant sometimes when I went to see the nurse he was not at that office to look at my results personally. He would either be called or another doctor would step in. However, I felt comfortable with the office and this was not a big issue but is a weakness.
How was your experience with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
I went to him because I had heard nothing but great reviews. I worked as a high risk obstetric nurse and my patients spoke the world of him. When my husband and I decided to see a fertility specialist I did not want to see anyone else. He was everything my patients told me about him and more. He was so caring but at the same time realistic. When he felt it was no longer a good option for our goal of becoming pregnant he would tell us. He would still give us the option to continue what we were doing or to move to the next step. I would never question if he was wanting us to change due to he could make more money. My heart knew he felt this was the best choices for us. He was was there a doctor,as well as, a support person. When I would leave crying after any further complications or bad news he was there to help me through what ever was going on at the time. When we decided it was time to step away from infertility treatments for a while he supported us and promised he would do anything to help us when we were ready to return. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Be open to him and let him listen to your story.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
He sat down with me and truly listened. He helped answer any questions we had, even they crazy you should know this one with no judgement. He was great at answering question with enough medical detail for me as a nurse, but able to explain perfectly to my husband with no medical background. He hugged us, did not pressure us and supported us through the process and all the tears along the way.
Describe the protocols Travis McCoy used in your cycles at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group and their degree of success.
He started out with femara. The first few cycle days then I would come for ultrasounds to measure the number of follicles and sizes. At that point he would instruct me to admister a trigger shot and would instruct us to have timed intercourse every other day based on when the shot was given. I would take a pregnancy test at the time of my period and call back with results. We repeated this several month due to I had responded well to the femara. Later we did the same thing but instead of time intercourse we did IUI which followed the same procedure.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
They were there for me to answer every crazy question I had. They always told me to never worry about any question that they are there to help me. They were my support when my husband could not be there. They helped cheer me up after crying. They made you feel positive about moving forward without giving false hope. They were everything I could have hope for in a nurse.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Travis McCoy at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
I had insurance that had fertility coverage. I do not remember the exact costs with or without my insurance. It was very reasonable with my insurance.
Describe Travis McCoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
We did not experience this due to we did not have IVF.

She [Dr. Whitman-Elia] personalized our appointments and was always upfront and honest.... We had wonderful experiences each time we saw her. She was always honest, but gave us enough hope to believe we would have a child. Although our first pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage, our second pregnancy ended with a healthy singleton. We were very pleased with the level of care received and are anxious to attempt another chance at increasing our family.
I don't have any complaints. It [PREG] was always clean and organized. There was always water available and our appointments were kept on time within a couple of minutes. The employees made being there not so scary and made you feel like you were a part of their family. They took pride in their job and it was obvious by their hard work and the upkeep of the building.... I had insurance and it covered a great deal. I was able to pay on my services and use credit cards.

Although our first pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage, our second pregnancy ended with a healthy singleton. I would highly recommend her to anyone and have shared our stories to many friends that have met with the PREG office in hopes of adding to their family.

I had insurance and it covered a great deal. I was able to pay on my services and use credit cards. Overall, the expenses I thought would prevent us from proceeding were not as bad as we thought. Before the company merged with PREG, we were able to pay our account to zero.
Describe Gail Whitman-Elia's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
She always wanted healthy embroys and didn't want to risk multiples because then you had a higher risk of death and/or disabilities. She only transferred two each cycle for me.

I objected myself daily for hyperstimulation of my ovaries. I was monitored really close by Dr. Elia-Whitman for the next month. Once she was happy with the progress a retrieval day was scheduled. They retrieved 17 eggs, 8 were fertilized, 2 implanted, and both became live births. My kids, twins, are now 3. We had a positive pregnancy test and a blood test to measure the hormone and then in a few days we did it again. At 6 weeks we had an ultra sound and that was our last visit.
We had an excellent experience [at PREG-Columbia]. I do not recall anything that was a weakness. Plan to be available for the month you go. It’s very intense regimen, but if you want kids this may be your only hope. It was for us. They put you in a group July/August but really most of the intensive stuff is in August. They manipulate your cycle to start so that everyone is about at the same place.
How was your experience with Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Dr. Elia- Whitman was very personable. She was very knowledgeable about her field. Always was super supportive. Her staff was phenomenal. I always felt like I was in good hands and like they were the best opportunity I had to have kids around here. At our first visit they went over expectations, procedures, storage and options for fertility and cost after insurance. We ordered the medications and they were shipped directly to us. I did injections to hyperstimulate my ovaries. I was scheduled for ultra sounds throughout that next month, going in every two days. It was quite a regimen. When my eggs were ready, they retrieved them. We had no problems with this procedure. They got 17 eggs and fertilized them. After fertilization using ICSI we had 8 embryos. They took the two largest embryos and implanted them in my uterus. Dr. Elia-Whitman told me on the day they placed them that I shouldn’t be surprized by Twins. She was right. We got pregnant with the first round with twins, one boy and one girl. At 6 weeks we had an ultrasound of our twins and this was our last visit with them. We are very grateful to have these kids!! They are our miracle babies.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gail Whitman-Elia at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group?
Follow the regimen. It’s definitely set up for you to be sucessful.

It was about $6000. $1600 in meds and $4500 after insurance for everything, all appointments, egg retrieval, egg placement, blood work, and last ultrasound.

Dr Cookingham was thorough at our first appointment but after that we never talked to her or seen her again after that. I was misdiagnosed and felt more like a number instead of a human. I think we could have gotten pregnant if she would have worked with us better or tried other courses of treatment...I felt rushed during all appointments and I felt like we didn’t matter. I was falsely diagnosed under her care
[PREG] Clinic was always clean and staff seemed very nice. The financial dept. was not very nice when it came to talking about OOP costs for IVF. They always picked up the phone immediately when I called. I think they try to get “plus size” women to lose weight because they think it will fix their fertility...Nursing staff had good days and bad days. I felt I was always rushed through my exams

The doctor [Edward Tarnawa] spend more time discussing my weight than PCOS or treatment options...was great at explaining PCOS to me and going through all the initial blood test results...I felt like I was a number instead of a human. He recommended weight loss surgery - something that is major and permanent (also something my insurance doesn't cover). Despite telling him that I could get letters from my therapist, psychiatrist, and dietician that weight loss was not safe for me, he pushed it.
I loved that after meeting with the doctor [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group], I met with someone from financial that gave me a printout of what my insurance would cover and what it wouldn't, as well as potential costs. This made it helpful to think about long-term planning - going for IUI vs. IVF, etc. They also knew my insurance coverage well to know what BCBS would consider "infertility."...I was told they would only call with my blood test results if there was something wrong. If there was nothing wrong, they would just shoot me an email with the results and I wouldn't need a follow-up appointment. Then they called wanting to discuss my results which resulted in a few hours of panic, thinking something was wrong with my test results. Turns out they just wanted to go over the test results regardless.

My experience with him has been very pleasant. I trust him as my doctor and will continue to be under his care. I feel as though Dr. McCoy has my best interest and is working hard helping my husband and I start a family. I will continue working with him as my doctor to achieve my family.... The treatment strategies involved pills, injections, and time intercourse. His next steps involve IVF but we can’t afford it. He recommends IVF because the timed intercourse with pills and injections have not been successful
Preg is a great clinic. They are organized and I’ve always been seen quickly and efficiently. I’ve always had good experiences with Preg. The staff is kind and very helpful. They have been patient and uderstnanding.... All costs are reasonable with my insurance. Each appointment is $100. The timed intercourse meds are $35 and the injection shot is $50...Very kind and welcoming. Very helpful. They always answer my questions. They have helped in financial situations with my payments. They are an awesome nursing staff.

After many failed fertility treatments Dr. McCoy has given me hope. He found an issue that the other doctors missed. He recommended a surgery to correct the problem. The last doctor told me I needed to get a gestational carrier which is something I cannot do. Dr. McCoy listens to you and helps to make a treatment plan that you are comfortable with...is very compassionate and listens. He tries to make sure you understand your treatment plan.
The staff [at PREG] were all very helpful and friendly. Joni was quick emailing me back when I had questions...Strengths: friendly staff, clean office, compassionate, knowledgeable nurses, doctors delegate with each other about difficult cases Weaknesses: hard to get in touch with a financial person, sometimes it's hard to get an appointment...Consult fee $200...I had uterine scarring from a c-section in 2005. He found it by doing a few test. One that includes a ultrasound and saline. After 1 fresh and 4 frozen transfers with genetic testing he was trying to figure out why they all failed. Everything lab wise looked good. However, due to scarring from previous pregnancy he feels like it has caused implantation issues. He suggested uterine surgery to remove the scarring. It was done laparoscopically in November 2018. Recovery time was around 2 weeks. I hope to do a FET as soon as possible.

Dr. McCoy was very caring and made sure all my questions were answered. When I had a setback he was responsive and did not dismiss as if I did not know my body. The pain I had prior to surgery has decreased due to surgery and pelvic floor therapy.... Dr. M was honest and upfront. He did not make promises about our ability to become or maintain a pregnancy. However, he did improve my overall quality of life by addressing the health of my uterus. He answered all my questions and did not make me feel like I was bothering him.
The clinic staff [at Piedmont Reproductive Group- Columbia] are friendly and engaging. They were helpful and sought answers effectively. The space itself was neat and comfortable. Also, the waiting room was quiet. However, bring your sweater.. it can be a littl chilly.... The nursing staff returned phone called within timely fashion and answered questions to the best of their ability. During the exams they were friendly and engaging.

I went to her [Gail Whitman- Elia] for a third opinion before moving to IVF. She talked to me in such a rude manner. She asked me what can I help you with, like I was at a drive thru window. Very condescending. When I asked questions she would respond saying like Dr. Singleton said and then repeat what her notes said. She had another person chart in her hand because she asked me and my husband if we were military because she had an approved authorization from Tricare.
The clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endo Group] is nice. Looks like a spa. The front desk girl was a bit rude. The financial coordinator did a good job explaining the different options to pay for IVF. The doctor wanted me to do some labs. I called to make an appointment to get started on my labs and I was transferred to the nurse line to leave a message. I left a message on a Monday. A week has passed and nobody has called me back.

She [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] was knowledgeable, and open to individualized protocols. However, she wasn't very good about communication after the initial consult. Very much a "don't worry" type without addressing very real concerns and anxieties.... I feel she was open to individualized protocols. However, she was kind of distant after the initial consult. Leaving my care to the nurses.... I have very little good things to say about the nurses other than Emilee.
Location [PREG- Columbia] was ideal. The ladies at the front desk were very nice and professional. (Sanora and Brittany) Honestly, they were the best part of the clinic. The weaknesses were the lack of communication by the nurses and the doctor just brushing off care to the nurses.... I have very little good things to say about the nurses other than Emilee. Emilee was compassionate. The rest of my interactions with the nurses were not so great. They were either distant, clueless, or just plain rude. Communication was terrible as well.

She [Dr. Gail Whitman-Elia] was excellent and very knowledgeable. She made sure I was comfortable and explained things to me each visit I saw her. I was treated like a priority every visit. Her demeanor is so calm and she is just wonderful to deal with.... We used low dose HCG 20 mg and Gonal F 300 to start with then bumped to 375 dosage. Cetrotide, Keflex, Aspirin, Pregnyl trigger, Estradiol, and Progesterone in oil 1/2 ml were also used
Emilie Smith was my coordinator [at PREG] and I could not have asked for anyone better. There are not enough words to describe how wonderful she is. Catherine was my nurse in the OR at the office and she is also amazing. They made me as comfortable as I could be with all of my procedures throughout the process and I can’t thank them enough for their kindness. Both are perfect for their jobs!

I felt like Dr. Tarnawa listened to our needs and wants and didn’t question our decisions. He also gave us honest suggestions but gave us the ability to choose our treatment...He was easy to communicate with and easily accessible as well. We lived 2 hours from his office and felt that he respected our time given the travel we had to put into our treatment. He answered our questions and respected our decision to agressively pursue pregnancy.
Karen [nurse at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] was amazing. She shared her own experiences with infertility with me which gave me hope and a true human connection...The staff was wonderful about explaining the charges and had a nice “cash” fee discount...Beautiful office, clean, friendly staff. We always felt calm even though we were going through such a stressful time. We loved that they offered seminars and educational opportunities internally. Everyone was very compassionate there making it a very pleasant experience even when we were not in the best of spirits.

He [Dr. Moore] was very nice. The consultant went as I expected. It was over very fast. It wasn't worth the $200 that I paid to set in his office for 5 minutes to have my heart broken. Even though he was nice about what he was saying. I was still a little disappointed. I would have like to get more options for what me and my husband can do to have a child....Knowing that he won't allow me to chance my life made me feel that he really cared about me more than about making a dollar.

Dr. Nichols was very pleasant and talked to me like I was a human being. He wasn’t just trying to convince me to do things his way he actually listened.... Was told I had to use donor eggs. Currently trying to find a donor and move forward now. Dr. Nichols explained his recommendations based on his experience but I wanted to try with my own eggs so I saw a different doctor. That didn’t work using my own eggs. So now, we are back seeing Dr. Nichols. He’s a great doctor and the only one I prefer seeing at the clinic as thee others are rude and don’t have good manners.
The clinic [PREG] is nice, Dr. Whitman is a doctor I would not recommend anyone seeing at the clinic. Her bedside manners is horrible, she lacks tact and is rude. Out side of that the staff is good but can be a bit slow with replying to messages and sending back information.... Donor egg cost for one kit is approximately $15,000 - $28,000 and is not covered by insurance. The doctors office cost and procedures are approximately an additional $10,000 - $15,000. Plus medications.

She [Dr. Lisa Cookingham] explained PCOS more throughly then my OBGYN, explained all the tests that were performed and answered all questions I had. We went over in detail. I was able to get in touch with her when needed. She listened when she needed to listen. She explained outcomes and what I should expect...She isn’t judgmental and she will help
[PREG - Columbia] Nurses were well knowledge of everything, if the doctor did not tell me then they did. They made calls about test results, explained things when I needed, and they were overall friendly towards me and my husband...Only thing I had a problem with is scheduling. It took a long time to set appointments or have follow ups. Otherwise I would rate the the clinic 9/10 in overall. The place is kept clean and organized. Everything is very sanitary

Dr Tarnawa always took our ideas into account. He would explain why we were doing certain things. He always made himself readily available for us when we had questions. We are currently suffering from reoccurring loss with normal embryos and he’s been very compassionate while telling us what he thinks. He has been by far one of the best drs we’ve had fertility and non fertility wise and would constantly recommend him...
The nurses [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] were always amazing. They showed compassion and we’re always responsive...The (Charleston) clinic was very prompt in responses. Appointments took no time and I never had to worry how long to get in. The Columbia one was a little more busy and harder to get initial appointments too...

My husband had a 0% morphology. He had to stop smoking. I did 2 rounds of IUI with Letrozole. Unfortunately was unsuccessful. Planned a IVF cycle but by the grace of God the month I was to pay and start the IVF process I had a positive pregnancy test. Two years we tried to get pregnant and was unsuccessful. After 24 months of infertility, the 25 the month I had a positive pregnancy test, naturally done. Fast forward 10/1/2021 I gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Dr MCCoy took time to listen to all the concerns we had and go over each part of treatment. After having a miscarriage I asked for specific testing and was given all of those and the next egg retrieval process was adjusted... Tried one iui that was not successful Did one retrieval cycle with antagonist protocol with 38 eggs retrieved and 2 normal after pgs testing. I had one frozen transfer that was positive but miscarried at 7 weeks. I am starting another retrieval cycle this month with different medications to see if we can get more quality eggs.
I go to the office they [PREG] have in Asheville NC and it has been great. I am always seen in a timely manner and receive great care. I started at a different clinic first and always had long wait times, hardly got to speak to anyone and felt like I was a number in a factory... Lynne is great. Dr. McCoy made us feel 100% better about continuing on with our treatments. He explained and gave us answers that we was wanting for years. We should have went to see him sooner. I feel that PREG will be our answer to our prayer and we will finally get pregnant from their treatments.... Dr. McCoy sat down and talked to us for almost two hours and gave us answers we have been longing for-for over five years.
The nursing staff [at Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] was so nice when we went in and they return phone calls and emails immediately.... We didn't have to wait long at all for a appointment. They are very successful at what they do and I can't wait until we get our miracle baby. Their office is so inviting with all the baby pictures on the wall.

I felt that Dr. W-Elia listened to my concerns. She did all necessary test to determine my correct treatment for success. Everything was explained to me a manner that I understood even risk. All that she stated was correct and so ended up with a beautiful son.... You could tell she was very compassionate in what she was doing. I felt the emotions from her while hearing my story and my issues: I felt like she genuinely cared and wanted me to get pregnant. Not just for ratings but for my happiness.
The clinic [PREG] is very clean and organized. You are given information from the time you walk in the door until you leave out. So you never feel like your questions are not being answered. You are shown everything that you are going to go through step by step. Financial staff is also great at breaking things down to you for cost.

Dr. Payne was very receptive to my needs. He was as detailed as I needed during our discussions. He really listened to our concerns and made us feel comfortable with our plan of action. We are yet to conceive but feel confident we are headed in right direction under Dr. Payne's care.... I was frustrated with my experience early on due to the office staff. I expressed my concerns and Dr. Payne contacted me after hours one night and talked with me for nearly an hour.
Emilie Smith is the nurse practitioner that does all of our ultrasound scans. She also did our IUI. She is absolutely AMAZING! I email her constantly with questions and she is always quick to respond. She's also super friendly!... The office I go to was recently merged with PREG. There have definitely been some pains with that but they seem to be getting better.

Dr. Whitman took us under her wing after a failed IUI at another clinic in town. She made sure we understood everything from day 1. When we had a failed cycle due to poor egg quality, she personally called me to. Heck on me. She truly cares about her patients. We had one cycle that we had to cancel half way through due to decreased ovarian reserve and she cried with me in the office. She is amazing.
The clinic [Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group] is great. The only thing I will say is that it is like a maze trying to navigate through it!... Tori [a nurse] is he best. She was my go to person with all of my crazy questions...I used the agonist protocol for all 3 of my cycles. Gonal F, Low Dose HCG.

Gail Whitman Elia made my husband and I feel completely comfortable. She made us feel confident in her ability to grow our family. We look forward to moving forward with simple IVF. She showed general interest in our family and answered very question with care...She is very open and non judge mental, feel comfortable sharing your personal information with her.
The [PREG] clinic is clean, friendly staff, compassionate Dr’s. Financing assistance could be more helpful. A strength was the knowledge gained in the explanation of the process. Weakness would be finacial assistance...$6,900 was cost of simple IVF and medication $2,000 to all $8,900...The nurses are friendly and assist well

Dr. McCoy is great but only saw him twice throughout the whole entire process. Another "new" doctor did all of my ultrasounds, retrevial, and transfer.... Covered all possible scenarios with what the possibilities could be and explained what was going on with our bodies. Told us that we would have to do specific treatment as the others just would not work. Then when treatment failed came up with a new plan for next cycle.
Nursing staff [PREG] expect you to know what happens next and that it is all normal and not an emotional process. Compassion is lacking in quite a few employees.... Clinics strengths are that it has good doctor's to choose from. Weakness is that many of the staff lack compassion. Make sure to ask what is next. They will expect you to know what comes next.... Dr. McCoy is great but only saw him twice throughout the whole entire process.

Describe your experience with Piedmont Reproductive Endocrinology Group.
Clinics strengths are that it has good doctor's to choose from. Weakness is that many of the staff lack compassion. Make sure to ask what is next. They will expect you to know what comes next. Ask questions
