Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
He is courteous and professional, yet very blunt, and as others mentioned, you will not get any hand-holding or touchy-feely bedside manner from him. He also does get irritated if you ask multiple follow-up questions or disagree with something he says. For example, I did have some areas of disagreement with him such as requesting that my treatment plan be adjusted based on what I knew about my body. I found that he was mostly unwilling to do it, but in some cases I was able to convince him. Having said that, he is a a fantastic clinician and I had 100% confidence in all of the procedures he performed. He also stays on top of the latest scientific studies and seems to take a more conservative approach to treatment. For example, PRP was only recently allowed in this clinic and omni is not thought of having much benefit on egg quality.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
You are in good hands, just expect to be treated with a more conservative approach, and if you want to explore different options/do some experimenting (within reason) or have some objections about how your body may handle something based on previous experience, be prepared to be denied because "doctor knows best."
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr. Opsahl treated me in a respectful way. However, he is abrupt and straight to the point with his answers. He is also very blunt and does not care for too many follow-up questions.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
He put me on a priming protocol with estrogen 1 week after ovulation, then 150 IU menopur, followed by Gonal (don't remember the dose as it was adjusted a couple times, sorry) and Ganirelix. Triger was with Pregnyl.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
All the nurses are wonderful, very friendly and genuine. However, I did have a couple of incidents where my messages were not replied to in a timely manner, which led to very stressful situation both times, but that was the exception rather than the rule.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
This clinic has an excellent lab with high fertilization rates, one of the main reasons I chose it. Both doctors here are highly qualified and experienced. The financial team is great to deal with—the financing is transparent, and they are willing to work with you and explain things step-by-step if anything is unclear. They also have POMA Care, where they refund most of a cycle if it's not successful, if you qualify. The nurses and MAs are very nice, remember you by name, and seem to be genuinely happy to be working there. This clinic is LBTQ friendly and I’ve seen diverse women of many races in the waiting room. On the whole of it, POMA is a great clinic and I would recommend it with some caveats. Caveats: The approach taken by the doctors here is generally conservative. I was told that for most people traditional stimming works, which is probably true, so if you are in that bucket then you have nothing to worry about. If you are a poor responder or have DOR, and want them to think outside the box, be prepared to do some convincing/butting heads. If you feel that you may need to experiment with meds and dosages, you may get frustrated. For example, if you want your dose adjusted or want to start a certain medication at a different time (poor timing cost me a cycle) than they tell you based on your knowledge of your own biology or want to propose a medication you were not prescribed, it is an uphill battle. Similarly, if you want to try medications that have some scientific backing, but are still considered experimental, (e.g. they just recently started doing PRP after popular demand, they are still lackluster on omnitrope), you will be met with little enthusiasm. Some other things I did not appreciate is that after a failed cycle, I was matter-of-factly told that this was likely the end of the road for me, which was devastating to hear (that turned out to be wrong) and I was subtly steered toward donor eggs (this clinic has their own donors, all anonymous). If I had listened and taken things at face value, I would not have had the success I had in a subsequent cycle. Some other smaller things, which I feel are worth mentioning—pre/post OP area is separated by curtains and there is a serious lack of privacy. After a retrieval I listened to my neighbor behind the curtain violently sobbing after she had just had a D&C procedure. I felt really bad for her, but it also it made me quite uneasy to have to listen to that as I was coming out of anesthesia. Another thing is that while they make you sign a consent form that no kids are allowed in the waiting room, I have observed young children there on at least several occasions. It did not bother me as much, but I could see how someone else might be upset by it and felt it wasn't right especially since they go to the trouble of prohibiting it in the consent form.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
Around $14K per fresh cycle, around $18K per frozen.
What specific things went wrong at Poma Fertility?
  • Lost appointments
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Poma Fertility.
There were a couple of issues with appointment scheduling during a cycle, but they were resolved.

Dr Opsahl is great with his communication on explaining the process and answering our queries...will help you understand...never felt rushed and walked out of every appointment believing we can trust him...will share with you the success rate for single vs multiple embryo transfer...Displaying a sense of compassion
in Poma, the doctors...work as a single unit...transparent their finance/billing process...Nursing staff at Poma is very well organized and provides timely updates on everything...display compassion at every step and are open to put hours explaining to the medications, tests and pharmacy options
How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr Opsahl is great with his communication on explaining the process and answering our queries. If you have query for understanding the subject in depth , he will help you understand. We never felt rushed and walked out of every appointment believing we can trust him and his process blindly. There's one area however where Dr Beesley stands out in comparison. Displaying a sense of compassion and answering queries (not asked) by putting himself in patient shoes. To the extend that at times you will find a friend in him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr Opsahl is very seasoned and knows his stuff in and out. He might at times give a sense that he is very busy (trust me they all are) but don't let that make you shy away from asking your queries. I've always found him to be very patient answering all our questions and trust me my husband had a bagful of those. If you ever feel like being rushed, you can try to schedule your appointments with other providers in the clinic. But when it comes to clinical procedures, I can bet my money on Dr Opsahl.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Fertility treatment is an emotional process for most couples. We had our share of failed attempts and a number of low points. There were many days where we felt like losing hope and reading through loads of articles/webinars on how to proceed. While we were searching for providers with great track record and importantly affordable, we came across this gem of institution named Poma Fertility. We had high hopes, but little did we know that we will meet a bunch of extremely caring and empathetic folks across all departments. Receptionist, Nursing, Doctors and even Finance. Coming to Poma, we had many unanswered questions after a couple of failed IUI attempts at SRM, Seattle. The entire Poma team was extremely patient to answer all our queries, listen to our past concerns and walk us through the options available to us in details. Throughout the process, we felt like we are thoroughly cared for, which transparent billing information, timely portal updates on medications, non rushed appointments and even doctors going out of their way on suggesting ways to lower our costs. All of while , keeping a smile on their face, exuding loads of positive energy and answering our queries with lots of patience .
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
Nursing staff at Poma is very well organized and provides timely updates on everything. They display compassion at every step and are open to put hours explaining to the medications, tests and pharmacy options. Please feel free to ask questions. However one single area where I think the group can improve - Blood draws. In few instances, the nursing group (specifically 1-2 members) had multiple failed attempts to draw blood
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
At Poma, we did a single cycle of egg retrieval, followed by genetic testing and then a single frozen embryo transfer. It is important to note that in Poma, the doctors (Dr Opshal, Dr Beesley and Dr Megan) work as a single unit. So you would likely be working with them in tandem throughout your fertility treatment process. The single most aspect about Poma that stands out for me, is how transparent their finance/billing process is. Everything is well documented with a lots of details (and also one can seek clarifications whenever in doubt). The documentation captures what all services are covered and what/how much you would need to pay for uncovered services. Poma is one of the most affordable fertility clinics in Washington and they provide multiple options. We also liked the fact how the clinic didn't ask us to redo the blood tests for which we already had reports. Displaying the fact that they are not blindly after money. - Poma Care : Depending on your age/score you will get back a size able amount of refund if they fail. NOTE- Even though its a slightly expensive option than others below (due to the refund element attached), you can withdraw from it mid journey if you think you no longer need it and they will refund back you the additional amount. - IVF batching : You can have multiple egg retrievals batched before doing. - Fresh embryo transfer: Poma is one of the few places where they do reach out to you if a fresh transfer is viable and is the best option for you. - Frozen embryo transfer and genetic testing: Genetic testing is done outside of Poma if elected. And for embryo transfer you get an option to select sex if you want to.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
Poma Care - cost 247500 (refundable 12000) : depends on age and score. We didn't opt for it. It's a single cost that covers 1 egg retrieval cycle and multiple frozen embryo transfers until you succeed or exhaust your embryos. Single IVF Free All cycle (our choice) - $14100 Single Frozen embroyo transfer (our choice) - $4100 All medications and lab cost = $7000-$7500 All consultations cost = 2 x $159
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
Depending on age group and medical condition, the doctor will share with you the success rate for single vs multiple embryo transfer. For younger women, the clinic does prefer a single embryo transfer but are very open to what the patient desires. So if you really want a multiple embryo transfer, check with the clinic. As far as I can say, they are pretty flexible in that sense.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
I recently had the pleasure of visiting Dr. Beesley, and I must say that my experience with him exceeded all expectations. From the moment I walked into his clinic, I felt like I was being treated as a human being, not just another number on a chart. One of the things that stood out to me was Dr. Beeselys accessibility. He made it clear that I could reach out to him at any time if I had concerns or questions about my health. This level of responsiveness and availability is truly remarkable in the medical field, where it can often be challenging to get in touch with doctors outside of scheduled appointments. I would also like to highlight an incident that demonstrated his genuine care and willingness to go above and beyond for his patients. At the time, I was facing some unexpected challenges related to my employment at Tractor Supply. The company had announced a reduction in infertility cycles, which could have affected my ability to receive the necessary medical attention. However, Dr. Beelsey stepped in and worked with me to find a solution. Thanks to his assistance, I was able to navigate through the situation smoothly, and I didn't face any obstacles in using my medical benefits. One aspect that adds to the overall positive experience at Dr. Beelsey's clinic is the atmosphere. Despite being a smaller clinic, it emanates a warm and welcoming family vibe. This sense of community makes each visit feel personal and reassuring, creating a pleasant environment for patients. In summary, I highly recommend Dr. Beelsey for his exceptional care, accessibility, and commitment to treating patients as individuals, not mere numbers. His willingness to go the extra mile, coupled with the family-like atmosphere of his clinic, truly sets him apart. If you are searching for a doctor who values your well-being and treats you with dignity, Dr. Beelsey is the perfect choice.

Dr. Beesley is an awesome, compassionate physician. I feel like he listened to my concerns and did everything possible to give me a chance of having a baby one day. He was upfront about expectations but he accommodated my schedule enormously to make IVF possible while I maintained my own clinical schedule...He has communicated well about expectations from the start but also been empathetic and supportive in a quiet and kind way. He was surprisingly accommodating
Dr. Beesley is great. I am happy with the [Poma Fertility] nursing staff as well. I think my only criticism is their online portal which has given me some difficulty, making it hard to communicate at times. They don’t answer the phone frequently so you need to go through the portal...Monitoring appointments were pretty easy. They open super early (they would let us in as soon as they arrived to work so ~6:40amish) so I could go to the appointment and get put the door and to my own clinic in time. That made it possible to do IVF — otherwise this would have been impossible.
How was your experience with Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
He has communicated well about expectations from the start but also been empathetic and supportive in a quiet and kind way. He was surprisingly accommodating and made it possible to do several cycles of egg freezing as a fellow — one of my retrievals even started 30 minutes late because I was running from an emergency case in the OR. That one actually had the most eggs. He’s been strategic in advising whether to freeze eggs or embryos etc. I couldn’t imagine a better fertility doctor
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
I highly recommend him without hesitation

Describe the protocols Ronald Beesley used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
I use estrace for suppression along with antagonist to prime for my cycles. I’ve required maximal doses of stimulation as a 41yo with DOR for each of my three cycles. Specifically, I used gonal/follistim 450, menopur 150, and antagonist and got good results considering my severe DOR. He was open to my third cycle being a luteal cycle, essentially a duo stim cycle so that I could squeeze in an extra retrieval. I plan two more cycles this year, one of which I’m currently on.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
Different nurses are part of the team but they all work efficiently during monitoring to make appointments quick. They help respond to emails usually within 24 hours.

He [Dr. Michael Opsahl] was straight to the point but throughly explained everything. I felt that he was inclusive of LGBTQ care. My partner was included with all the treatments. He was friendly. I felt informed at every visit...explained my options, allowed me to have choices, and answered any questions I had...I received 3 IUI with the third one a success...The third try worked for us and I am currently 7 months pregnant
It’s [Poma Fertility] a busy clinic which some might not like. The appointments were quick but efficient. I felt it ran like a well-oiled machine. The nurses always quickly responded through the portal. Overall the clinic was organized and friendly. I felt completely comfortable as a member of the LGBTQ community. I will be returning to this clinic when ready for my second child.
How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
He was straight to the point but throughly explained everything. I felt that he was inclusive of LGBTQ care. My partner was included with all the treatments. He was friendly. I felt informed at every visit. He just was very straight to the point which some people might not like. I prefer this and felt like I had choices.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Although it was a busy clinic, they explained my options, allowed me to have choices, and answered any questions I had.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
I received 3 IUI with the third one a success. The first cycle we began with a lower dose of letrozole which only produced one egg but I was given the option to continue with the treatment or wait until next cycle. The following cycles my letrozole was increased to produce more eggs. My partner was able to actually be involved in the insemination process…once the syringe for IUI was placed, she had the option of pushing the syringe to be included in the IUI process which I thought was cool. The third try worked for us and I am currently 7 months pregnant
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
I had only positive interactions with the nurses. They were very friendly, answered questions and overall great to work with

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr Beesley works in a team with Dr Opsahl, so if somebody decides to become a patient, they should know that. I never know who is going to perform the transfer or any other procedure, if that matters. All Poma fertility patients work with both providers...Dr Beesley is extraordinarily good at communicating with his patients. Every time I had conversation with him, he was present, calm, answered all my questions without rushing
Poma Fertility is a smaller clinic compared to the other fertility clinics in Seattle area. There are two doctors working as a team - Dr Beesley and Dr Opsahl. They work together with all patients, in other words, one cannot work exclusively with one of them. As I was going through my fertility journey with them, I have seen both equally often. They have different styles of work, but I think they are both very professional and experienced.
How was your experience with Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
As I mentioned before, Dr Beesley has extraordinary communication skills. Hands down, I have never had a doctor like him! He is very kind, compassionate, and respectful and at the same time trustworthy and knowledgeable. He always took time to answer my questions thoroughly even if he was busy. Even after the unsuccessful embryo transfers during cycle reviews (that's the apt when we discuss the unsuccessful cycle and further steps), Dr Beesley somehow managed to make me feel better and optimistic. I also felt he was completely honest with me - for example, he wasn't afraid to tell me that when it comes to reproductive medicine, some questions don't have answers (yet) and further research is necessary. I have to mention that he is very gentle and skillful while performing all kinds of procedures - from simple ultrasound to biopsy and transfer. Some may say this aspect is not important as long as there are results, but as a woman I disagree. I think Dr Beesley is a rare combination of wonderful personality and professionalism.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
Dr Beesley is extraordinarily good at communicating with his patients. Every time I had conversation with him, he was present, calm, answered all my questions without rushing (although sometimes he was busy, he never seemed rushed). Always very respectful, kind and professional.
Describe the protocols Ronald Beesley used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
This was my Frozen Embryo Transfer Protocol - Lupron until the start of Progesterone; after Suppression check start of Estrogen injections, gradually increasing from 0,05ml to 0.25ml; Progesterone in oil 1 ml for 6 days until the day of the transfer; continuing the progesterone every day after the transfer and estrogen every third day. I didn't question or discussed the protocol with my provider, I believe that was a standard protocol for FET and I trusted Dr Beesley would make the right decision.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Poma Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Linda Alexander)
Linda is professional, experienced and intuitive. She is easy to work with. Sometimes when she is off, somebody else is covering her patients and there might be some miscommunication. I always double check everything that I receive from the nursing staff, including instructions, schedules and protocols, so I can communicate any questions that may arise and clarify anything that's not clear to me. I think as a patient I am responsible to be proactive - check, read, and understand the instructions, so there won't be any mistakes. I feel that sometimes Linda is overwhelmed with too many patients and that is the reason for some delayed replies, but these instances are just exceptions. She is very organized, explains well and in detail when asked and is an excellent nurse.

They have different styles of work, but I think they are both very professional and experienced. The nursing team are very compassionate and polite and they seem to enjoy working there. The front desk are always friendly and welcoming and they managed to go through the pandemic madness with smiles and finesse. They don't offer/work with a therapist that can help patients going through infertility treatments, as some other clinics do. That proved to be a problem for me as I needed some support and I couldn't find a single therapist with the right kind of experience that would accept new patients. It would have been nice if they have had a therapist on site or they collaborated with somebody.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility.
I lost the track of the costs, I have been a patient for too long. Except for the initial screening, nothing else was covered by my insurance. Their prices are competitive, similar to SRM and less expensive than some other clinics in the area.
Describe Ronald Beesley's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
Dr Beesley strongly recommends eSET. I think that they allow 2 embryo transfers at the clinic under some circumstances and if that's the patient's desire, but I didn't discuss that with Dr Beesley as it wasn't my desire.

He [Dr. Michael Opsahl] definitely treated me like a human and you can tell he takes care creating each patients retrieval plan. That said, he still has very "doctor" like mannerisms and could warm up a little bit with his bedside manner...Don't expect to see him every time, but Dr. Opsahl and Dr. Beesley do a great job of working together on your treatment plan. They either communicate closely or have similar approaches, as even though I would see each of them every other time or so, it always felt like a cohesive strategy.
Poma does a great job of letting you set that pace with your treatment plan. I never felt rushed, forced, or like I only had one path forward. For someone who likes to do their own research and ask lots of questions, this was great for me...Dr. Opsahl and the entire Poma team are great. I saw either Dr. Opsahl or Dr. Beesley, and enjoyed each of their approaches and treatment styles. Dr. Opsahl can be a bit direct, but personally I prefer that to someone who sugar coats the issues.

Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
I was concerned that we were not using enough hormones as I have low AMH. However it was explained to me that this would likely yield better quality eggs, and that seems to have been true based on the results after my retrieval. They were also open to adjusting medication when I could get one covered by my insurance but not the other, which was very helpful.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
Nursing staff was great. Super responsive, love that I could get a quick response through patient portal to questions. They also lent me medication when my own were taking longer than anticipated to obtain. They were all fantastic.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
This is a long process. There are setbacks that are outside of your control or even the clinics at times. Poma does a great job of letting you set that pace with your treatment plan. I never felt rushed, forced, or like I only had one path forward. For someone who likes to do their own research and ask lots of questions, this was great for me.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
Fertility care is complicated. Even though I have coverage through insurance, sooo many things were not covered by my insurance. I would go back and forth with the finance manager multiple times, and unfortunately the issue was usually on my insurances side not Pomas side. I would estimate that overall we spend about 22K, I'd say about half of which was out of pocket. This was for meds, retrieval, and transfer.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
I like that they let you choose which approach to take, but help guide you along the way.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Opsahl was extremely knowledgeable and very experienced, and I definitely trusted that he knows what he is doing. He was on top of current science and knew all the new studies that had come out, and also had a healthy skepticism of anything that hadn't demonstrated validity in scientific studies. I trusted his judgment and evaluation. I do feel like he could have been warmer and more patient and compassionate, and a little more humble.
The price [at Poma Fertility] was slightly cheaper, and there were way fewer hoops to jump through than other similarly successful clinics in the area--they got me in faster, and treated me much more like a person than a list of boxes to check. The clinic itself is comfortable and nice to be in, and the staff is friendly. They have great success rates.

I trusted his judgment and evaluation. I do feel like he could have been warmer and more patient and compassionate, and a little more humble. But the nurses made up for that, and I felt a lot of warmth and good bedside manner from them.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Don't look to him for reassurance or emotional support through this process, but do trust him to make good recommendations.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I felt a bit like both--he definitely talked to me more like I was a human than a number, but I also felt like he might be frustrated by how many questions I had and seemed a bit rushed and not overly empathetic with my concerns.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
I can't remember exactly my protocol, but basically, hormonal suppression and then hormonal stimulation, then egg retrieval, with the option of a fresh transfer and then freezing the remaining embryos for testing and later transfer.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
The nursing staff were amazing! Super compassionate and available and very thorough when in person or on the phone. Sometimes things got forgotten through the Patient Portal (forms didn't get uploaded, or they would leave something off--but nothing crucial) in a way that could feel disorganized, but they were so fully present in person and on the phone that it definitely made up for it.

$16,000 plus meds for fresh embryo transfer IVF cycle

He definitely favors eSET, and recommended only using one embryo (if euploid), even in my 40's.

Dr Opsahl is definitely more on the blunt end of the spectrum. I have had three early miscarriages while under his care, and each time he was 'nice enough' but quickly walked out of room or ended phone call, etc. This is my main critique with his bedside manner. On the strengths side, he truly cares, and is up to date on research. He's invested in our family and supportive and encouraging of our path...
All providers are very timely in portal responses and you can message the providers directly. Ask questions of the lab- they are phenomenal and I wish I had more insight to them. They are very transparent in their costs and one of the best options around for cash pay IVF / FET...Poma is the best of both worlds, when it comes to clinics. It's 'small' in the sense there are only 3 providers (2 MDs, 1 PA), but large enough that you don't have to wait too long to get established, they do cycles every month

Be prepared for fast talking. Ensure you're understanding what he's telling you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr Opsahl does seem personally invested in my case currently. He's willing to try things, and be open to my questions while maintaining his own perspective as well. The clinic has grown since I had my first child with them in 2017, and volume has greatly improved.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
After first egg retrieval almost failed (resulted in only 2 eggs being able to be retrieved), determined it was due to understimulation due to method of injection. Switched from sub-q to ALL IM injections. Had much better success with retrievals 2 and 3. Added hgh for 3 cycle. For first FET after my live birth, did 3 months of Depo-Lupron suppression for endometriosis management.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Poma Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Laura)
Laura is a gem, and super knowledgeable and caring. There's been turnover in the nursing staff (as with most healthcare professionals) and I miss a lot of the old MAs, nurses, etc.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
Poma is the best of both worlds, when it comes to clinics. It's 'small' in the sense there are only 3 providers (2 MDs, 1 PA), but large enough that you don't have to wait too long to get established, they do cycles every month, etc. Be comfortable seeing any of the providers, or, learn to advocate and request only 1 provider whom you gel with (and be prepared to schedule around that). They are very transparent in their costs and one of the best options around for cash pay IVF / FET.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
FET was about $3k, and IVF was around $11k. They give all line items and bill insurance when they can (eg OB ultrasounds post-transfer, etc).
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
Very strong advocate of eSET, almost not even discussed.

[Dr. Michael Opsahl] was sometimes quite busy but when I had questions he made sure to answer them thoroughly in a way I understood...He is experienced and intelligent in what he does. He would give us upfront and honest info and advice which I appreciated but he always let us decide. I didnt feel any pressure to do it their way if I didnt want to. He was very encouraging...We did PGS testing on all the embryos except the first. We did a fresh transfer with the first bc they said they can usually tell which one is best. Unfortunately that one didn't take but we got 1 pgs normal of the 6 others we sent for testing. That one took and I am now 32 weeks pregnant 😊

Unfortunately that one didn't take but we got 1 pgs normal of the 6 others we sent for testing...There were times when things weren't communicated well [by nurses] but for the most part it they did pretty well...We did pomacare which ensured we take home a baby. 11,000 ivf/ 2500 PGS/ 600 anesthesia, meds not included. If we needed another egg retrieval it would cost 5000 but luckily we didn't.

Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
With our fresh cycle they preferred to do a single embryo transfer bc research shows there is a lot less complications with a Singleton. However they were open to doing 2 if we really wanted. We only had 1 pgs normal after that to transfer.

I live in Portland and had many tests done at my own hospital so I didnt have to drive 3 hours. Once they scheduled a test I thought was covered by pomacare, it turns out it wasn't and would cost $700 but I could get it free at my hospital. So I drove all the way there for nothing and the timeline had to be changed so I could schedule the procedure at my own hospital.

Dr. Beasley kept thinking about ways my partner and I could make IVF work for our situation. He called us after work while driving home to discuss options. It feels very clear that he sees us as individuals and sees our different aspects of the fertility process. He is also super queer friendly and doesn't seem put off by how different our process is than his other patients.
Very positive and supportive place [Poma Fertility]. ... They always remember us and everyone there has a great sense of humor about the work. The communication system is sometimes a little clunky, with multiple different people sometimes responding to emails, but that's my only complaint. ... She [nurse] loves working with LGBTQ couples and is able to talk you through the process without batting a eye. She has a ton of experience and is excited about reciprocal IVF.
How was your experience with Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
Dr. Beasley feels like a wonderful, wacky fertility genius. He explained so many options for us. For some people, this may be too much information--he's so knowledgable, you can see the wheels spinning when he's explaining things. For us, this showed he was really holding us in his thoughts through the process.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Ronald Beesley at Poma Fertility?
Dr. Beasley will be straightforward and honest about the options, but he will also let you explore them on all on your own. He is probably best for a patient who knows something about the IVF process before walking in the door.

He is strongly on the side of single transfer, unless there are a few quality embryos to work with.

I ask a lot of questions each time I am in there. For example, I wanted him to go into detail the reality of multiple IUI cycles. Dr. Opsahl took the time to show me examples and scenarios similar to mine and how things were adjusted to make a difference in body response for each cycle. I have never had a bad experience with him.... Dr. Opsahl didn't like the results of the regimen my old fertility doc had me on for multiple IUI cycles so the IUI cycle I did with
POMA really listened to my concerns, spent a lot of time explaining things to me, and gave me realistic expectations.... This clinic is in a convenient location, parking is easy, staff is very friendly, and the wait time for an appointment isn't months out like other clinics. Their waiting room is usually full of other patients waiting for their treatments but the front desk ladies are always respectful!

Write down your questions and take notes during the appointment.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
POMA really listened to my concerns, spent a lot of time explaining things to me, and gave me realistic expectations. I have never felt rushed to be out of there before their next appointment.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
Dr. Opsahl didn't like the results of the regimen my old fertility doc had me on for multiple IUI cycles so the IUI cycle I did with Dr. Opsahl bumped my Letrozole from 5mg to 7.5mg and my numbers were the best ones yet!
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
Sometimes the wait time for the nurses can be longer than expected but overall they are very kind and polite and educated!

Their waiting room is usually full of other patients waiting for their treatments but the front desk ladies are always respectful! Last time I was there they helped a lost elderly lady with a language barrier get to her appointment with a different doctor in the same building but on a different floor. One of the gals took the time to walk her their herself. The customer service is amazing!
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
My insurance now covers nothing. My last IUI had some coverage so I think total out of pocket for that was around $600 plus medication, $1,000 total. We just started treatments again in 2018 and I did 3 round of Letrozole ($30 total) with no other interventions. My baseline testing was around $1,100 because insurance paid nothing. To do an IUI treatment it will cost around $1,300 total this time around. POMA offers several options for IVF. One round is $11,000 before medication. They do offer multi cycle discounted rates.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
Dr. Opsahl's goals are to start with one. I agree with that approach.

Dr. Opsahl takes the time to explain everything in simple terms. He greets and takes the time to say hello every time even if he isn't the one that you are going to see today. He has a calm demeanor which takes the stress out of everything. When I concerns, he addressed them immediately and had a plan.... The egg retrieval meds were very well throughout since this was my second retrieval. Unlike the prior clinic I went in weekly, for follicle ultrasound. They kept close eye on my growth and adjusted meds as needed. I had 23eggs retrieved, prior to this at the other clinic I only had 5. I've had 2 failed FET cycles and now we are prepping for an ERA under anesthesia as the regular ERA didn't work. He takes everything one step at at time, but has been explaining everything every step of the way.
I get hugs and greeted with love and compassion every time I see the nursing staff [at POMA Fertility]. They are cheering us on, even during the bad days they remind me not to give up. They have laughed, and cried with me through the entire process. They answer portal messages promptly, or they get a hold of Dr. Opsahl and get back to me immediately. Never have I had to reach out to them twice with a question. They are so quick.

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
There was compassion and empathy. When things failed, he comforted me and told me we will get to the bottom of things and figure it out. He never let me give up.

I do like that they communicate through portal messages. It is nice to have the chance to re read instructions, rather than trying to remember a phone call conversation. I can't think of any weakness, they do great in all areas.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Poma Fertility.
I had to tell the nurses only once that the earliest appointment is always best for me because of work. They have always scheduled me right when they open for monitoring appointments. I have never had to reschedule the time because they remembered what works best for me.

Dr Opsahl takes the time to answer questions thoroughly and thoughtfully both in person and via the portal. He takes the time to understand where your head is at when making important decisions regarding your care and makes sure you are making the best choice for yourself and that you have all the information you need to do so. ... Since I have PCOS, I was prescribed a lower dose of Gonal-F to start off with, and we are hoping I will respond well to that. Also, since I have a higher than average BMI (but still within their guidelines) all of my medications are going to be intramuscular rather than SubQ.
POMA is a very well oiled machine. They are compassionate, thoughtful, and make this process easier by being supportive. They are also super efficient with your time and make multiple appointments in the same slot for you (office visit, blood draw, ultrasound, financial, etc). ... Our care coordinator is very prompt with replies in the portal and if she is not there, someone always responds and addresses what I need right away.
How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
We are still in the pre-IVF stages with POMA, but it has been positive so far. He takes the time to really sit there with you and explain and make sure he understands. This type of care is something you can really only get at a smaller clinic like POMA.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I would do your intake appointment with Dr. Opsahl rather than the PA there. She was wonderful, but I wish we had waited a few more weeks to meet with him initially.

Around $18,000 (This is an estimate. Pre-IVF testing, IVF medications, Egg Retrieval, PGT-A testing, Anesthesia...etc. Subsequent frozen transfers are $3000+ more.)
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
I don't believe they consider multiple embryo transfer unless you are 35+ and/or have a history of recurrent pregnancy loss. I agree with and support this.

[Dr. Opsahl] provided treatment for our 1st and 2nd IVF cycles, I have since moved to new clinic for treatment...very kind and supportive, but we decided to move clinics because we were not 100% confident in the treatment decisions...we were excited that we had made one fertilized egg which was frozen at a 2PN stage. The recommendation was to complete a few more IVF cycles, batch more eggs and then grow and genetically test all of them at the same time. I later learned that freezing at the 2PN stage is somewhat unusual and was more for cost savings associated with batching eggs. Moving on to the 2nd IVF cycle, we never had a formal review with our doctors to discuss how the cycle went and if they would recommend modify our treatment plan. Instead, we hastily discussed if we would change the medication dosages at the end of our Day 3 suppression check appointment. The team even asked my opinion if I wanted to lower the hormone dosages. I appreciated that they wanted to consider my input but I'm not a RE expert so I thought it was a little odd. In the end they lowered my Gonal F dosage and the 2nd cycle ended unsuccessfully with no fertilized eggs.

Overall, the doctors and nurses at POMA are very kind and supportive, but we decided to move clinics because we were not 100% confident in the treatment decisions...I would encourage patients of POMA to be their own advocates. If you don't feel like you are getting enough information reach out and the team is good at responding...Laura was a great IVF coordinator very compassionate and organized. Really appreciate all her help.

I would encourage patients of POMA to be their own advocates. If you don't feel like you are getting enough information reach out and the team is good at responding. If you are confident in the treatment you're getting, consider a second IVF opinion, that was really helpful for us.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I was treated by both Dr. Opsahl and Dr. Beasley, both of whom were very polite and friendly. POMA is a very busy clinic so I often felt rushed when we had meetings with the doctors and nurses. I also didn't realize we were supposed to have a cycle review after each IVF cycle. We didn't have one after the first cycle but we did after the second and in hindsight that review meeting made big difference in how we felt about the treatment.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
Cycle 1 (8 days of stimulation): Lead in with birth control. Day 5 started Menopur 150IU, Omnitrope 0.5ml, and Gonal F 300IU. Result: 4 eggs retrieved, 2 mature, 1 fertilized. Cycle 2 (7 days of stimulation). Lead in with birth control. Day 5 started Menopur 150IU, Omnitrope 0.5ml, and Gonal F 225IU. Result: 2 eggs retrieved, 0 mature, 0 fertilized. Update: I moved clinics and switched protocols for diminished ovarian reserve. Cycle 3 (12 days stimulation). Lead in with 2mg estrogen 2x daily. Day 3 started with Clomid 100mg, Gonal F 450IU, mini-HCG 20 units. Result: 10 eggs retrieved, 4 mature, 2 fertilized, 2 blastocysts.

Laura was a great IVF coordinator very compassionate and organized. Really appreciate all her help.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
The staff are genuinely compassionate and want all patients to be successful which is a strength of POMA. The operating room and laboratory is very professional with lots of identification checks. Weakness are (1) POMA is a very busy clinic and so you often feel rushed in your meetings and (2) egg retrieval waiting area felt like an emergency room with the individual bays separated by sheets. This isn't a big issue, I just had the odd experience of overhearing the doctors celebrate with other patients about all the eggs they just retrieved. I knew going into my own retrievals that I would only get a few eggs so it was painful to hear these conversations. I'm embarrassed to admit that I was actually in tears as I waited for my last retrieval at POMA after overhearing the previous patient's success. This was one of the contributing reasons we decided to move clinics.

How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
We started out seeing the nurse practitioner at Poma for initial consultations and began working with Dr. Opsahl further along during treatment. He was warm, knowledgable, and easy to work with. He was optimistic and positive and easy going. He seemed skilled at what he does and very thoughtful about choosing different protocols/procedures. I felt that he tailored his approach to what he thought would work best for me (IVF vs. ICSI for fertilization). He listened to our desires for a single embryo transfer and was supportive and didn't push us to transfer the additional fair embryo in addition to the good quality one. I felt like he was looking out for our best interests and what we wanted. He seemed a little uncertain how to acknowledge my emotions when most of our embryos arrested and died unexpectedly between day 3 and day 5 (from 12 embryos to 1-2 embryos).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Share your concerns and ask for what you want - he will listen and be supportive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr. Opsahl was overall warm and understanding. His clinic is small and it made me feel good when the front desk and nursing staff recognized me.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
Dr. Opsahl had me take birth control pills for 1-2 weeks at the beginning of the cycle. Then I used Follistim, Cetrotide and Menopur with regular monitoring of my hormone levels every other day and then eventually daily. He had me trigger with an HCG trigger shot. He recommended regular IVF fertilization (rather than ICSI) with a belief that nature picks better sperm than humans can given my partner's adequate sperm count and effective acrosome reaction test. We retrieved 21 eggs (20 of which were mature), 13 of the eggs fertilized, we had 12 day-3 embryos (8 high quality), and 1 good quality day-5 embyro and 1 fair-poor quality day-5 embryo, and zero embryos that could be frozen. The one good quality embyro was transferred and led to a healthy pregnancy, live birth, and "take home" baby born at term on the due date.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
When you can get in touch with the nursing staff, they are excellent. However, it is difficult to get in touch with the nursing staff either through calling the nurse line or through the online portal system. Because there are multiple nurses, you don't often talk to the same person and it was stressful trying to get follow-up questions answered. That said, the nursing staff was always supportive and helpful and we always got the information we needed eventually. The physician assistant Megan Palazzola was rather cold and unhelpful. We had our initial consultations with her rather than Dr. Opsahl and she was not very warm or compassionate or understanding of our emotions regarding starting IVF treatment. She ended up getting pregnant herself during my treatment there which she never discussed even when it was obvious she was expecting. I would have appreciated some acknowledgment of the awkwardness of the situation and an explanation of how it would impact my treatment.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
The clinic is a smaller operation than many fertility clinics in the area. When we first attended there was only one doctor and they have recently added a second one. Both doctors are male, which was a little off-putting to me, but I was pleasantly surprised by how warm and compassionate they both are and how much I have appreciated working with them. The clinic seems to try to keep costs down as much as possible and to tailor treatment to the patient. I appreciated that it did not feel like a one-size fits all treatment approach. We also appreciate the Poma Care plan in which you can qualify for money back (the exact percentage depending on your age/health/stats) if you don't get a take home baby at the end of treatment. We could have saved money by not using Poma Care, but we appreciated the peace of mind it provided after we transferred the only viable embryo from our retrieval. We feel happy that, by "overpaying" with Poma Care, some of our money was refunded to another couple who was not successful like we were. We definitely plan on going back to the clinic to complete our family and plan to use Poma Care again for the same peace of mind. Parking is easy and free which is a bonus. It can be a little challenging and stressful to get in touch with the nurses in time for any adjustments to medications, but after being persistent, we always got the information we needed in time, but sometimes it was down to the wire. It is helpful to be really proactive about asking what you need to do in advance because otherwise it is stressful and last minute.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
We paid approximately $20,000 for IVF with Poma Care (qualifying for 70% back if we did not get a take home baby at the end of treatment), approximately $4,000 for medications, and $600 for the anesthesiologist, in addition to some initial testing and consultation costs.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
Dr. Opsahl was supportive of our desire for an eSET. He offered to transfer the other poor-fair quality day-5 embryo as well, but we declined. He did not have a strong opinion nor did he push us in either direction.

Dr Opsahl is caring and understanding. He does rush through appointments sometimes it feels like he is always in a hurry. He is a busy doctor, I understand but due to infertility as a super sensitive journey, I feel like he is always in a rush. Overall, he is a good doctor. He will listen, and explains the procedures.... We started with fertility boosting meds to see if I can ovulate more and get pregnant by myself. Then we tried IUI's, which failed. Then we decided to do egg/embryo retrieval due to some cervical cancer issues.
Clinic [Poma Fertility] is very clean, looks organized, big enough, with great equipment/tools. Although the part that is sometimes frustrating is how busy they always seem. Sometimes you have to wait 15-40 min at your appt. and also with harder times to change your appt, or choosing another day.... Sometimes due to how busy the clinic is, they forget to email you information or call in prescriptions. But for the most part they are on top of the schedule and are helpful.

Just to be prepared for anything that can happen in your journey. Mine was not easy, and am still going through it. But Dr Opsahl will remember you, and has a smile on his face every time he sees you, which is comforting while you're going through this uneasy journey.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
They are really good at caring for patients, although due to what seems like a super busy clinic, you sometimes feel like a number. They sometimes forget to follow up or give certain directions ahead of time, which is crucial for me. But I guess the patient can also be on top of their own journey as well.

Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
Clinic is very clean, looks organized, big enough, with great equipment/tools. Although the part that is sometimes frustrating is how busy they always seem. Sometimes you have to wait 15-40 min at your appt. and also with harder times to change your appt, or choosing another day.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Poma Fertility.
They are usually done early in the mornings of specific days, which is pretty convenient due to work schedules of most people. No problem with those appts at all.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
Very expensive, since my medical insurance does not cover any infertility, we have to pay everything out of pocket. We have spent around $15,000 already for treatment provided by Dr Opsahl.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
Dr Opsahl strongly suggested due to our age to use single embryo transfer instead of multiple for a safer healthier pregnancy.
What specific things went wrong at Poma Fertility?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Provided conflicting information
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Poma Fertility.
Sometimes the nursing staff will email you saying they will update your IVF schedule and send out certain medications to the pharmacy, and it gets delayed by a few days, if not done at all. Pt has to be on top of things and sometimes remind them to resubmit info, or prescriptions to make sure you don't miss anything critical.

Dr. Opsahl helped educate me and helped me understand what I was going through. Now that I fall into Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, he has done absolutely all the testing he could possibly do to give us an explaination....After an array of testing had been completed ranging from testing tissues from both of my previous miscarriages to auto immune, karyotype, mthfr, and blood clotting disorders, we finally got to a point where we could start trying again.
I did not necessarily want to be treated at a clinic where I would be passed around from doctor to doctor, depending on who was working that day. This is one of my bigger reasons why I chose Poma. However, the reality is that this can be a challenge as well because he [Dr. Opsahl] is only one person and needs to oversee all his patient's care. He does have a physicians assistant whom I've seen and think very highly of as well.
How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
My husband and I went for a consult with Dr. Opsahl when it had been almost a year after the miscarriage of our first pregnancy. I had expressed my concerns even thought my situation didn't fall into a typical type of patient that fertility doctors would start seeing. He was very informative and reassuring that he could help speed up the process to conceive with less aggressive treatment. He did not pressure us with IVF right away. Unbeknownst to us, we were actually pregnant during that consult but it was too early to know. Although it was a spontaneous pregnancy, Dr. Opsahl continued to monitor the pregnancy closely due to my history with miscarriage. Unfortunately, it did not work out and ended in a miscarriage again. He had recommended a d&c so that we could do testing on the tissue and recommended I go back to my OB and consult the surgery due to his tight schedule for the upcoming week. I expressed how I did not want to see my previous OB again and was in the process of switching. He went above and beyond, and somehow got me into his schedule a couple days out. The care that I received at Poma was far surpassed my first experience with a d&c from my previous OB. Even afterward, they monitored me to make sure I would get back to "normal" for 8 weeks post op. I was left in the dark with my first miscarriage with the OB and had no idea what was happening to my body. Dr. Opsahl helped educate me and helped me understand what I was going through. Now that I fall into Recurrent Pregnancy Loss, he has done absolutely all the testing he could possibly do to give us an explaination. Although we have not found the answer, we know we are in good hands with Dr.Opsahl.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I would give the advice of being your own advocate to any patient, not just ones who I would recommend see Dr. Opsahl. I've been in that type of situation where you just need to be firm about what you're feeling and your concerns. It shouldn't be shrugged off or ignored. Don't just take 100% , your doctors word for it. Express your concerns and why you feel a certain way about a certain thing. Communicate.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
In my previous OB/GYN care, I've felt like I was just a number. Countless times waiting in the lobby past my appointment time and not recieving the compassion that I so deserved in my experience with miscarriage. When I was researching the different fertility clinics in my area, I chose Poma Fertility due to many factors, but mainly because Dr. Opsahl was going to be the sole person to take charge of my care. There were not dozens of doctors that I would be passed around to. I've heard that at some other clinics, you would hardly even see the doctor and would mainly be seen by the nurses. My expectations were more than exceeded with my experience so far at Poma Fertility. They're warm and welcoming and know you by your name. You're taken back on time and Dr. Opsahl and his team have shown me so much compassion for my situation and my losses. I truely feel like they care for me and I'm not just a number that they make money off of. I'm certain that this is how all his patients would feel.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
After an array of testing had been completed ranging from testing tissues from both of my previous miscarriages to auto immune, karyotype, mthfr, and blood clotting disorders, we finally got to a point where we could start trying again. Dr. Opsahl had prepared us on what to expect, treatment wise, if genetic testing of the pregnancy tissue or ourselves came back abnormal. It would mean we would need to do IVF to better our chances. All of my testing came back normal except for my thyroid. My TSH was elevated to a 3.8. My clinic wants you to be between 0.5-2. I was placed on a small dose of synthroid for hypothyroidism and was recommended to start with medicated IUI cycles. Because the tissue and our karyotype came back genetically normal, he explained IVF would not necessarily resolve the issue that could have caused the miscarriages. We first tried clomid 100mg, cycle days 5-9. I did not respond well. Only 1 mature Follicle that took much longer than the typical day 12 and my lining wasn't great. On day 18, Dr. Opsahl gave us an option to go ahead with the IUI or take the trigger shot and try on our own with timed intercourse to be more cost effective. We opted for the latter. That cycle was unsuccessful. Next we tried a natural cycle with an IUI due to some confusion. This too was unsuccessful. However, my husband's sample was abnormally low and we had only 2.7million motile sperm to work with. Our 3rd cycle comes around the holidays and we missed our window yet again, due to another confusion and delay. Our 4th cycle finally came and we changed the medication to letrazole/femara at 7.5mg, the max dose, for days 5-9 again. This time I did respond great. Two and a half mature follicles on day 12 and a great lining measurement. We triggered that night and went in 36 hours later for the IUI. My husband's sample was great this time at 88million motile sperm before wash and 12.4 million progressive motile sperm at 80% after wash. That cycle, unsuccessful again. Deflated, I needed to take a break but not a complete break. Our current cycle is going to be the same dose of the medication letrazole without a trigger and timed intercourse on our own. If we're not pregnant by April, we will try another medicated IUI.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
Most of the nursing staff I've dealt with are compassionate and kind. There are a couple that I really love. They are the epitome of who I would expect to be working in such a personal field like fertility. Kindness, sympathy if not empathy and compassion are such necessities in this field. Naturally I've dealt with some nurses who don't possess this trait as strongly and one that has really dropped the ball during a critical time in my cycle. But overall I would say they are highly reliable to depend on getting your concerns/questions answered and important information relayed between you and the doctor. Poma has a convenient online portal messaging system that they consistently check throughout the day. I've usually had my messages replied to, Monday-Saturday. All the lab results are promptly uploaded to this portal as well. Important information is usually given by a phone call by the nurses. I remember once, I was anxiously awaiting for a response to a concern I had. Because of my history with past providers forgetting to get back to me, I was checking in with the nurses at Poma frequently to remind them. I was pleasantly surprised to be reassured that they haven't forgotten about me and that they were just finalizing the instructions from Dr.Opsahl before getting back to me. I've been able to fully trust that these wonderful nurses at Poma, know what they're doing and do their jobs well.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
When I was researching fertility clinics, these were some of the factors that I was looking for and wanted in a clinic that would care for us. First is obviously the reviews others have made about this clinic. I had originally heard about Poma through a friend, who knew someone that was a patient there. They had raving reviews about Poma and conceived their first child through IVF. I utilized social media and online reviews as well. I looked into more than one clinic. I found that some had several doctors. While others like Poma were smaller "boutique" style clinics with one doctor. I did not necessarily want to be treated at a clinic where I would be passed around from doctor to doctor, depending on who was working that day. This is one of my bigger reasons why I chose Poma. However, the reality is that this can be a challenge as well because he is only one person and needs to oversee all his patient's care. He does have a physicians assistant whom I've seen and think very highly of as well. So that helps. Location is also a big reason I chose Poma. Going through fertility treatment is grueling and you often need to be seen several times a month, if not a week to monitor your progress. This clinic was the easiest to commute to, close to my home and my husband's work. This made it easier for him to leave work for appointments. Lastly, Poma worked with my insurance. Fertility treatment is such a big expense and a lot of times, a medication or procedure is not covered. Poma is also very upfront with the price of IVF. Which helps because IVF is not a covered treatment on a lot of insurances. They also have a guarantee program where you pay an extra premium to guarantee a live birth and take home baby. They refund a portion of your money if that is not achieved.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
The first consultation is $350 but was covered by our insurance as an office visit. So we only paid our co-pay. Clomid and femara were covered by our insurance but the trigger shot was not covered. They ordered in the prescription to a specialty pharmacy based out of Arizona. It cost $135 each time. Our first IUI was fully covered due to our out of pocket max being met. But looking at the claims, it cost roughly about $300 including the sperm preparation and the IUI itself. He did not charge for the specific ultrasound scan during the procedure but all other monitoring ultrasound scans were charged. Costing just under $200 each, but after our insurance coverage, it was $25.
What specific things went wrong at Poma Fertility?
  • Failed to convey critical information
  • Canceled a cycle due to clinic error
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Poma Fertility.
The cycle that fell during the holidays, I had feared would not go as planned due to the tight time frame I had. My cycle had started a couple days before Christmas weekend. I called in my cycle day 1 per usual and the particular nurse, that handled my messages that cycle, was not as attentive to my needs. I needed Dr. Opsahl to confirm the recommended change in medication from clomid to femara and to give me the protocol for that cycle. Ultimately I got slipped between the cracks and never got instructions and the new medication called into my pharmacy on time. On Christmas Eve Eve, on the 23rd, a wonderful IVF nurse sent me a message recommending I refill my clomid and follow the protocol from my previous cycle if I wanted to do that. The only drawback was that there was supposed to be a change in meds and I expressed that I did not want to do the same meds and protocol that I did not respond well to. She said unfortunately, because she is the only one in the office and Dr. Opsahl was out for the holiday weekend, she could not get the confirmation for the new med. By the time the next open business day came around, it was too late in my cycle to start any meds and continue with the IUI. So we missed out on that cycle and it was frustrating. The day after Christmas, another wonderful IVF nurse called to apologize for the mix up and for not relaying the information promptly.

How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr. Opsahl is compassionate and kind. He makes sure he's present for almost all your ultrasounds and definitely for all your procedures. As the clinic got busier, we did notice that he'd be in and out of the room faster, answers got shorter and I felt like I was bothering him if I had to ask questions. They hired an ARNP to help out but since I've been with the clinic for so long, I felt so comfortable working with Dr. Opsahl the most in every step of cycles.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Dr. Opsahl can be very blunt or forward with your diagnosis and treatment suggestions but he wants you to succeed in your goal. If you truly feel a certain way about treatment or your plan, make sure you discuss all options with him. Don't be afraid to be your own advocate as well.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I've been going to Poma, pretty much since they opened. The nurses at Poma are so caring and really take the time to make you feeling comfortable and ask all the questions you need. Dr. Opsahl is a nice and caring physician but as the clinic got busier, I felt like it was harder for me to see him and ask questions.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
It's really hard to remember each cycle's protocol. My follicles did not want to respond to meds each time so Dr. Opsahl would max my dosages to get the most we can out of them. One of my best cycles was when we used growth hormone as Dr. Opsahl had done some research that it helps with egg quality. After the first cycle fail, Dr. Opsahl suggested me use donor eggs but my husband and I were not ready yet to go that route. He respected and worked out on our decision to still try with my own eggs. After 2 fails, we are now ready to start the donor route.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Poma Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Kirsten for IVF and now Shanita for donor IVF)
Working with Kirsten was the best. She's so organized and remembers me every cycle. She's also very detailed where I don't have to ask too many questions but when I did ask, she never gave me short answers and didn't make me feel like I was bothersome. Working with Shanita was difficult at first. It was hard to get a full understanding what happens during donor cycles, she was out of the office a lot and would forget to answer my questions where I'd have to ask multiple times. I've expressed my concerns to her and communication is now a lot better. There are other nurses at Poma who have been there throughout our journey, Jessi, Edden, Jessica, Jennifer, to name a few. They always remember you when you come in and are so caring.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
Strengths - Organized overall. I like the organization and communication with financial. They answer any and every question you may have because it's all very confusing. You can even set up appointments with financial and then e-mail as well. The front desk remembers you when you walk in. The lab is very organized and they synchorinize your bloodwork with your ultrasound appointments well. Overall the clinic is great and a huge reason why we never wanted to switch anywhere else. Weakness: Communications needs to be a little bit better. Describing what each med is for, why you're taking something and why certain meds need to be taken could be expressed more. I felt like I always had to ask why I had to take something or what it's for. I'd hope that Dr. Opsahl could stop accepting patients if they feel that they are juggling too many in one cycle. I can tell during some of my appointments that they are rushing. It's not horrible but I've definitely noticed a difference in the years.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
Poma is considered one of the more affordable clinics in the area. On top of their lower cost, they also offer a discount when using cash for IVF. Our insurance does not cover any of it so it's all very expensive anyways but we feel we get the best deal with Poma.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
He knew the quality of the embryos I was producing so transfering more than one was usually the option we took.

How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I was mostly seen by Megan Palazolla PA, and she was gentle, kind, and very blunt. Dr. Opsahl did my procedure, but when it came to the consult and who I spoke with more it was Megan, and she was treasure.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
I would say be on time and ask lots of questions, and push for a cohesive working environment. Megan listened to and worked with me on treatment plans and meds. She listened to what worked.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Poma Fertility.
When I had NIPT it was inconclusive. They used a butterfly needle rather than a straight needle to draw the blood. At nine weeks that can damage fetal DNA and make a huge difference. It even says on the instruction, use a straight, large gage needle. That caused me so much panic for weeks that I cried daily. I am not the type.to.ever get an abortion. My baby is my baby, but when you have results come back.like that some might abort a perfectly healthy fetal due to a lab error for fear of having a special needs child.

How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
What I liked about Dr Opsahl was that he was brutally honest. He told me how things looked without sugarcoating it. Sometimes this can scare away people, but in my case that was what I wanted to hear, so I could plan my next step if I would need it. I believe he did what he thought was best for my situation and for that I will always be great to him for helping me conceive my twins.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
To be prepared for real honesty. This doctor is not really warm and fussy, but he is good at what he does and he listens to you if you have any concerns.

Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
I did the antagonist ivf protocol. I have diminished ovarian reserve. The first medication I took was called estrace. I took the medication twice a day. After couple of days later I even started with the first antagonist injections. This prevents premature ovulation. I took this for 2 days I believe. When I stopped taking the injections they told me to call the office after I get my period. They made me an appointment for suppression check bloodwork and ultrasound. Everything looked good and after this I started my stimulation medication. I had to take injections daily between 4-7 PM. My meditications list included: menaopur 150 iu, follistim 450 iu ( the dose changed day 5 to 375 on day 8 it went down to 150 iu. Also, I took omnitrope 0.5 ml. Omnitrope is a human growth hormone. In ivf this is used to improve follicle development, estrogen hormone production and egg maturation. I did this protocol for 8 days. They got 4 eggs out. After the egg retrieval, the next steep was to take Medrol 16 mg, Doxycycline 100mg, Estrace 2mg. Also, I took Crinone one day after egg retrieval. I think I covered almost everything. Thankfuly, this protocol worked for and it resulted with my twin boys.

I really loved this clinic. I don't think I remember any weaknesses it has. My experience with them was wonderful. I don't know how they are now, but 2017 the team they had were very professional and friendly.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Poma Fertility.
We could go in with our schedule for monitoring, unless it was time passed monitoring.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility.
All the blood tests, ultrasound and IVF costed us around $15.000.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
I transferred 2 embryo because dr told me I would have a better chance. I think this approach was right for me.

The few times we met with Dr. Opsahl he was very helpful. ... If we had questions he answered them thoroughly. He was confident that IUI would work for us and never pressured us to spend any more money on other things. When our first two IUI's didn't stick because of a thin uterine lining he switched my medication and we were successful. ... Trust that he is there to help you conceive and not just to make money.
I felt like it wasn't about the money, that they [Poma Fertility] were generally excited for people to have the family that they wanted. I appreciated that financials were always taken care of by people not associated with my medical care. The front desk staff were always pleasant and cheerful when appropriate. ... I think some of the nurses may have forgotten that although it's a job for them it isn't an every day occurrence for many. ... The only difficulty I really had was when getting called back.
How was your experience with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
The few times we met with Dr. Opsahl he was very helpful. My husband is a science nerd so he wanted all of the information possible and statistics and was given all of that information. If we had questions he answered them thoroughly. He was confident that IUI would work for us and never pressured us to spend any more money on other things. When our first two IUI's didn't stick because of a thin uterine lining he switched my medication and we were successful.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Trust that he is there to help you conceive and not just to make money.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
When I was in the office my treatment was wonderful, minus one nurse who was new and didn't really know what she was doing. The only difficulty I really had was when getting called back. Several times when I was getting ready for a treatment I would get a text or a call after the time that I could call and ask questions which was very frustrating. The front desk people were wonderful and helpful every time I spoke with them.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
My first two cycles of IUI, I took chlomid for 5 days around my fertile time, then I went in and got a wand utlrasound to see how many eggs I had produced and if they were ripe. Then we were given an at home trigger shot and told what time to do the shot. My husband gave me the shot and then two days later my husband would go in the morning and give sperm that they washed and put in a different solution. That day we went in and they did a stomach ultrasound and inseminated, my husband always choose to push the plunger. The first round I got pregnant but the numbers were very low and the baby didn't stick. The second time was nothing. The third time we changed from chlomid to Letrozole. This time I ended up pregnant with twins. We did lose one twin at 9 weeks.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Poma Fertility.
I think some of the nurses may have forgotten that although it's a job for them it isn't an every day occurrence for many. No one walked me through what would happen during my miscarriage and because they were short staffed they missed an opportunity for me to start on medication again, so we had to wait to try again. My next two rounds were frustrating as well because of the lack of communication, I wouldn't get messages until late in the day and the messages would say if I had questions to ask them before the message was sent out. I will say that when I was in the clinic , for the most part, the nurses were kind. There was a flu outbreak that year and many of the nurses were out sick so I did end up with one who didn't really know what she was doing, which was hard to deal with as I didn't know what I was doing either.
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
In general I would use Poma again, I'm hopeful that the bugs in the system have been worked out since I was there last. I felt like it wasn't about the money, that they were generally excited for people to have the family that they wanted. I appreciated that financials were always taken care of by people not associated with my medical care. The front desk staff were always pleasant and cheerful when appropriate.

Dr. Opsahl is a kind doctor with lots of compassion. He has a sense of humor but is also professional. My husband is a numbers guy and the stats that Dr. Opsahl gave didn't sit well with my husband.... In this regard, I felt like Dr. Opsahl didn't do the best in explaining things and making my husband feel comfortable spending tens of thousands of dollars. I felt like my husbands questions made him uncomfortable and not confident. He was never unkind, but the interaction was confusing and uncomfortable.
Overall, the clinic [Poma Fertility] was great. The parking was pretty good, the clinic itself was clean and welcoming. The front desk staff, at times, seemed annoyed and inconvenienced but for the most were nice. There were a few times I could hear them venting or talking about a patient and I felt that was unprofessional. For the most part, I didn't have to wait too long to be seen. The nurses were so kind and really tried hard to keep patients moving through without seeming like they were on a conveyor belt. Every one I ever met with was kind and empathetic.

Dr. Opsahl is a kind doctor with lots of compassion. He has a sense of humor but is also professional. My husband is a numbers guy and the stats that Dr. Opsahl gave didn't sit well with my husband. It's hard for me to say whether one was right over the other but they kind of talked in circles. My husband ended up just letting it go because they were never going to see eye to eye. Dr. Opsahl didn't explain too much to me during each appointment and I felt like he was a bit rushed at times so I had to rely a lot on the nurses to answer my questions. During the retrieval and transfers, Dr. Opsahl was happy and encouraging and made us feel confident and comfortable. If I saw him during a beta appointment, he was hopeful for us and encouraging. Overall, I was happy to work with Dr. Opsahl.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
Have your questions written out and keep pushing till you get the answers you're looking for. At times, it can seem like he's talking in circles and not shooting straight.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Michael Opsahl at Poma Fertility?
They knew my name when I came in and seemed happy to see me. They took the time to talk with me and explain everything to us.
Describe the protocols Michael Opsahl used in your cycles at Poma Fertility and their degree of success.
The first cycle was kind of like being a Guinea pig. We were just trying to see how my body would react. We did birth control, then menopeur, follistim, cetrotide, estrogen patches and estrogen pills. This cycle ended up with a negative after all was said and done Next, we did a FET. I believe we did birth control, lupron and I'm not sure what else. Ended in a negative. Second cycle was similar to the first but we suppressed for a shorter time, and with stims we added in human growth hormone to try to grow my eggs and make them as strong as possible. This cycle ended with a positive and a live birth.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Poma Fertility. (Assigned nurse: For fresh cycles it was Kirsten, for FET it was Jessie)
Overall the nurses were amazing! They were really there to answer any questions, explain everything to me and they were there to chat with and were so encouraging! Loved them!

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Poma Fertility.
The appointments were generally quick and painless. In and out within a few minutes. Dr. Opsahl generally did them but sometimes Meghan, the other doctor / MA did them. Dr. Opsahl wasn't always the gentlest, so I actually preferred to see Meghan sometimes.

Dr. Opsahl is friendly, smart, and makes you feel like he genuinely cares and wants to help you start a family. I loved the atmosphere of he office. If he see’s you in the waiting room he will come and say hi and call you by name. I also like his nurse practitioner Megan....He gives you a list of supplements to take if you would like and they really helped my egg production. I used menopur, gonal- f, pregnyl, progesterone vaginal tablets, birth control.
As soon as you walk in the feel of the office [Poma Fertility- Kirkland] is so comforting and relaxing. Which is a lot to say when you are so nervous and stressed out for these appointments. Front office staff is friendly and helpful....I loved how she [nurse] was compassionate and caring. She was very organized and would respond back very quickly usually the same day with hours. When she was not there the other nursing staff would also get back to me very quickly to answer any questions or give me dosages. Love there patient portal system. Very well put together.

He gives you a list of supplements to take if you would like and they really helped my egg production. I used menopur, gonal- f, pregnyl, progesterone vaginal tablets, birth control. I am getting older so each time a did a cycle my egg count went down a little bit but not horrible. I usually used two bottles of the menopur a day and gonal -f was about 350 units to start and taper down at the end of stim.

Very willing to work around my schedule since I lived four hours away. As long as I was there in time to get my lab test results back in time to change med doses if needed.
Describe Michael Opsahl's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Poma Fertility.
We talked about what the embryo quality was he day if the transfers and then decided on how many to put in at that time. He ask your opinion and then he also gives you his. We did multiple each time we did a transfer.

We did Reciprocal IVF [with Dr. Michael Opsahl]. My wfe went through egg retrieval with no fertility issues. I was under suppression meds in preparation of embryo transfer, no fertility issues...Very compassionate doctor. Explained our procedures and was very friendly and professional. Very lgbt understanding which is what we were looking for. Made sure our questions and concerns were addressed
They [Poma Fertility] checked insurance coverage and sent us the estumated amount we would owe.Elwe had to pay that amount up front before beginning the he procedures. Once they were done refunds and adjustments were made...I had specified the use if a certain pharmacy due to insurance. I had to call in and message Poma seceral times to send prescription to the correct pharmacy. Staff did not call in to discuss results from a pregancy Ultrasound

They are very very busy and seems as they should need to be better organized. There is no on call person that eould answer your questions that need immediate attention. You hace to wait until the end of the day to get a response
Describe your experience with Poma Fertility.
Very friendly staff. The clinic is clean and welcoming. The rooms for before and after procedures lack the so much needed privacy. They could use a separating wall instead of curtains for after procedure. It would be nice if partners can go into the op room for egg retrieval.
