Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Smith was overly direct, had a flat affect, and always made negative and discouraging comments. She changed my plan of care often without reason...Many of her statements have been disputed by my current RE who is far more evidence-based. I would never trust this physician with my life or the future of my family. Dr. Smith is not trustworthy, compassionate, or consistent in her care delivery...Her surgical notes were conflicting as well
[Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] Strengths: Location is great, clean and beautiful Weaknesses: Dr. Smith operates a single-physician practice. IVF is the most profitable treatment, this is what will be recommended here. The care far more about profits than your healthcare. We spotted several inaccuracies on our insurance claims. They billed for procedures that didn't happen more than once. To date, they still have over $1000 that they owe us from overcharging for a surgery that was almost a year ago. Go anywhere else!
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith was overly direct, had a flat affect, and always made negative and discouraging comments. She changed my plan of care often without reason. For example, I had surgery and was supposed to be prescribed antibiotics and hormones after. She failed to do either and then only wrote for the antibiotics after we called. I questioned the plan and she denied ever saying the plan was to do hormone priming. This ended up setting us back months. Her surgical notes were conflicting as well, saying completely different things as she wrote her brief op note to discharge me and then filed her formal note 1 month later. This is entirely unprofessional. Later, we completed an IUI cycle with her and she told us we had a 15% chance of pregnancy, we paid over $1000 cash, walked back to the room and she said, "This has less than a 1% chance of working for you". Many of her statements have been disputed by my current RE who is far more evidence-based. I would never trust this physician with my life or the future of my family. Dr. Smith is not trustworthy, compassionate, or consistent in her care delivery.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?

During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
We were repeatedly encouraged to do IVF or seek a gestational carrier before we even had a single IUI or fertility treatment. We have conceived twice on our own without intervention and had 1 live, full-term birth. We certainly didn't need to jump to IVF or be told to "go home and count our blessings". I consistently felt Dr. Smith as far more interested in my pocket book than my healthcare.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
Ellie the NP was lovely. The monitoring nurses were difficult to get a hold of. At times I couldn't get calls returned or replies to my messages.

She [Dr. Deborah Smith] was a godsend when I was in recovery after the surgery, and experiencing terrible bladder pain, begging for a catheter. Even though I did not meet the qualifications for a catheter, she understood that I was in extreme pain and allowed for a catheterization. I am grateful for that, as it was a traumatic situation. However, during my post-op appointment, her bedside manner was completely absent. She performed a pelvic exam so abruptly that I felt violated.
Although I was only with the clinic [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] for a brief time, the nursing staff were all wonderful, especially the one (I forget her name) who comforted me when I was crying in the hallway after a particularly devastating meeting with Dr. Smith...Overall my experience with the clinic was that they were organized and caring of patients. The only weakness as pertains the clinic as a whole would be that if you present a challenging case (such as a mental health situation, as in my case) you may fall through the cracks because, as a small clinic, they probably just won't have the bandwidth for you.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith seems to be an extremely capable doctor in her ability to parse large amounts of medical history and come to a diagnosis. I felt in good hands as I underwent surgery for a tubal ligation. She was a godsend when I was in recovery after the surgery, and experiencing terrible bladder pain, begging for a catheter. Then she proceeded to tell me that I could never again undergo elective anesthesia (something that would be required for an egg retrieval) due to the fact that I'd had a panic attack during the anesthesia for my tubal ligation that she performed. She was unprepared for our meeting and seemed to have no idea how to proceed with me. I came up with some ideas on the spot, despite being in shock, and she seemed somewhat amenable, but ultimately did not lay out a course of action. Nor did she outright say "I won't treat you, better find another clinic". So I ended up just wasting six weeks trying to get her to lay out a course of treatment. I left the exam room in tears, and was comforted by one of the nurses while standing in the hallway. After a few minutes Dr. Smith interrupted the nurse because it was time for her next appointment. The nurse seemed scared of Dr. Smith, apologized to me, and scurried off. Dr. Smith would not make eye contact with me. I should have just left and never looked back at that point. Since then I have moved on to another clinic, CCRM, where they didn't bat an eye when I gave them details of my anesthesia PTSD reaction, and came up with a treatment plan immediately. I was not made to feel ashamed of my mental health condition, which is as it should be.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith could be a great match for someone who is totally unconcerned with bedside manner or a warm personality. She's all business and can be slightly condescending. But in the end, she is extremely intelligent and clearly good at the medical side of her job, if not the personal side. She clearly runs a tight ship. The nurses seemed a little intimidated by her.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
I was a challenging case and felt that the clinic, being small, was not prepared to handle my unique situation. As a result, I lost six weeks trying to make phone contact with them to answer basic questions about whether I would be able to pursue IVF with them. The lack of response lead me to seek treatment elsewhere.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
I did not start an IVF cycle with Dr. Smith. She was not prepared to take on my case due to my PTSD triggered by operating rooms / anesthesia.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
Although I was only with the clinic for a brief time, the nursing staff were all wonderful, especially the one (I forget her name) who comforted me when I was crying in the hallway after a particularly devastating meeting with Dr. Smith.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
I believe the initial consult was $200 or $250? I don't remember how much the tubal ligation cost, but it was covered by my insurance. I did not go through an IVF cycle.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
They did initially tell me the wrong date for my surgery, but I don't honestly know if the fault was with the hospital scheduling, or the business coordinator who emailed me, or just some miscommunication down the line. Either way, it was a big headache for me to adjust my schedule! That was the only major snafu.

We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility [by Dr. Deborah Smith]. We had tried clomid with timed intercourse, so she said it would be best to try a couple rounds of iui before seeking other options...We saw Dr. Smith only a couple of times during the many visits. Most of the time we met with the nurses. Dr. Smith was very blunt and to the point but did not give much detail... She didn’t show much compassion and there just wasn’t a lot of explanation of what to expect or what the options were. We mostly dealt with the nurse than with her. We have only done IUI so far but because of the lack of communication we don’t feel confident in our care from her there.
We mostly dealt with the nurse [at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center]...Our nurse was very compassionate and kind...lacked follow through. We had to call to get updates many times...They are more affordable than others which is great considering all the costs and lack of insurance coverage...The billing person, Danielle, was HORRIBLE. She was never available and did not try to advocate for us. She made us call to get information regarding a denial in coverage and once I called they said they could only speak to the doc office and directed me to tell her to call. So she never even called.

Ask to speak with her and/or have her at each ultrasound and appointment. She wasn’t even the one who did the IUI.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
We saw Dr. Smith only a couple of times during the many visits. Most of the time we met with the nurses. Dr. Smith was very blunt and to the point but did not give much detail. When it came to dealing with insurance we didn’t feel as though the billing staff ever advocated for us. Especially since we had to pay up front for our costs.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility. We had tried clomid with timed intercourse, so she said it would be best to try a couple rounds of iui before seeking other options. We were going to go through insurance since they covered iui procedures. However because we had gone through clomid with timed intercourse 5 times previously, they would not cover the iui. The insurance told us that because their studies showed that it didn’t work they would not cover more. The billing staff told me that the insurance was right. This was after we already paid for the iui and was during the 2 week wait. We felt like there was no hope. We got no check in or follow up regarding our iui procedure and if it was successful.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Alex)
Our nurse was very compassionate and kind. She was sort of a space cadette and lacked follow through. We had to call to get updates many times.
Describe your experience with Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
They are more affordable than others which is great considering all the costs and lack of insurance coverage. Dr. Smith seemed knowledgeable and very blunt which can be fine if there was more explanation and actual doctor FaceTime. I also would’ve expected her to do more of the ultrasounds and the actual iui procedure. The nurses were very kind and compassionate, however they seemed disorganized. The billing person, Danielle, was HORRIBLE. She was never available and did not try to advocate for us. She made us call to get information regarding a denial in coverage and once I called they said they could only speak to the doc office and directed me to tell her to call. So she never even called. Since we had to pay for everything up front, she just did not care. We also were denied coverage because we had already gone through 5 rounds of clomid with timed intercourse and therefore iui would not be successful. We were told by Danielle that the insurance companies had many studies proving they were correct. So after we already paid and had the iui done during the 2 week wait we were told basically that we had little to no chance of getting pregnant without IVF. Then we had no follow up from the doctor or nurse after the iui failed. A little explanation and next options would have been great. Overall the experience really was terrible especially when it’s so emotionally tough anyway.

As I said Dr. Smith isn't the warmest person so if you need emotional reassurance please take a loved one with you to offer you that support ... She really breaks down information for you and does have your safety at heart. ... We tried clomid first, a high dose due to my BMI. ... I think doctor Smith would show a more human touch if she could just brush up on patient files before each appointment ...
The strength is that they're [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] very open about pricing up front and offer packages to help pay for different treatment while also working with your insurance. Scheduling has never been an issue and the clinic is always spotless. ... The nurse and other staff definitely add the human touch to the office. I've never had a bad or rude interaction with them. With our repeated losses the nurses were the most sympathetic ones offering hugs and support
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr Smith is a smart and understanding woman. She really breaks down information for you and does have your safety at heart. While she isn't the warmest or fuzziest presence you learn that that is just the way she is and it isn't personal. My advice is if you are very emotional and need that support please take a friend as she won't be one to offer a hug or make you feel better if hard news strikes.

As I said Dr. Smith isn't the warmest person so if you need emotional reassurance please take a loved one with you to offer you that support
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
We understand she is a busy doctor but sometimes she'd forget details about our specific scenario and get numbers and treatments mixed up during visits and we'd have to correct her. I understand she sees a ton of people but it would make us feel safer and less like a number if she just took 5 minutes to review key points from our file so we could all be on the same page.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
We tried clomid first, a high dose due to my BMI. I don't remember dosage or length but it ended in a cancelled timed intercourse cycle as I didn't grow any follicles. Second time I did letrozole and I did it at 10 mg again trying something new as clomid did nothing and also high dose due to BMI. I did 10 mg for 5 days on CD 3-7. I ended up having a cancelled IUI as we thought I hadn't responded again but I ovulated way later and ended up pregnancy on my own from that round of medication but it ended in MC. 3rd time with letrozole we did 10 mg for 7 days instead CD 3-9 I believe to see if it would trigger ovulation a bit sooner. I took the trigger shot after she was satisfied with the size of my follicles and had the IUI shortly after. I ended up pregnant but also ended up losing that baby. We gave my body a number of months to allow for my hormone levels to baseline out and then we completed full work up on different miscarriage caused.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: You are assigned one but in my couple of years of being there they tend to get a new nurse about 2 times a year )

The strength is that they're very open about pricing up front and offer packages to help pay for different treatment while also working with your insurance. Scheduling has never been an issue and the clinic is always spotless. Again I think doctor Smith would show a more human touch if she could just brush up on patient files before each appointment but her staff more than makes up for any feeling of being a number.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
I believe the cost of a medicated cycle with IUI is about $875 which includes ultrasound monitoring until pregnancy is detected, sperm collection and wash and the IUI itself. The cost of medicated cycle without IUI and just timed intercourse is $600 and covers just the ultrasound monitoring. Neither of those plans include the cost of medication

During my first miscarriage my prescription of Percocet was unfortunately not signed and so I had no way to fill it. They were able to call a different prescription that wasn't a narcotic though and it ended up being okay as it was more a precaution in case the pain was unbearable but I ended up only taking over the counter stuff

Dr Smith is warm and approachable. She allows time for questions and answers honestly. She never pushes off questions or concerns as unimportant. She takes time to get to know you and care for you as a human. She also has a wealth of current scientific knowledge and uses the latest technologies to help produce pregnancies. Even though I have personally not become pregnant theough her YET, I trust her with my reproductive health.
The clinic [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] is fantastic. They get me into appointments as quickly as possible. They work with my schedule. The send out reminders ahead of time. They are busy and flexible if that is even possible. I have not had a negative experience with the staff at this clinic.... My nurse has been an absolute angel. She is detail oriented and compassionate. She understands what fertility patients endure and is kind with us even when we are crazy and hormonal.

Dr Smith did a fantastic job along with her staff on remembering details about my life during common and often stressful procedures. She does a very good job of not only caring for her patients as a physical but also as a human.

We done countless blood tests. Checks uterus for polyps twice a year depending on where I am in the treatment cycle. She helped me through the embryo donation cycle (not my own embryos). Performed polyp removal surgery. I've been with her for 8 years on and off... So many procedures to really remember them all.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
My insurance covered some of the procedures but the most expensive procedures such as IVF egg retrieval and embryo transfers we're not covered. She offered a discount for cash payment so we made that work for us by saving money over time. Ivf including transfer cost us around 16k. One transfer cost 4k. One IUI cost about 800. Associated costs like ultrasounds ran the gammet depending on our insurance. We paid $2500 for a surgery to remove polyps. We did this 2 times. My understanding is this is pretty competitive pricing in the Denver metro area.
Describe Deborah Smith's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
My understanding is that she suggests the number of embryo transfers based on the patient. I have had one transferred ans I have had 2 transferred. Depends on the treatment plan and the patients medical history.

I am still on DHEA and a cocktail of vitamins. She also prescribed acupuncture for me. I really like that Dr. Smith includes holistic methods in addition to the prescriptions...can seem a little distant, but you can tell she knows her stuff so it didn't really matter to me that she wasn't more heartfelt with me. She's matter of fact and professional. Her nursing staff was stellar at the hand-holding, softer bedside manner so it kind of balanced out.
I think the only weaknesses I noticed [at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] were that I felt like I had to follow up with things like next appointments and treatments rather than them being in control. I don't know that that's a bad thing though. But perhaps because I already felt so out of control with the diagnosis of infertility, I would have liked a bit more hands on attention. Other than that, I appreciate the mix of holistic and medial treatments. I also have full confidence that Dr. Smith is the best doctor for me. If I'm able to conceive at some point, I know it will be because she got me there.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
In my first consultation, Dr. Smith could have gone a little slower explaining everything to me. It was all so new to me and I was completely lost. But I could tell she was smart and capable which was more important to me than someone coddling me. She has provided excellent care throughout my process so far. So while she may be a bit stiff and matter-of-fact, I've not struggled with being under her care.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Ask her to slow down if you're not understanding what she's saying. Take notes so you can remember everything.

Other than that, I appreciate the mix of holistic and medial treatments. I also have full confidence that Dr. Smith is the best doctor for me. If I'm able to conceive at some point, I know it will be because she got me there.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
Between the clinic bills, hospital bills from my tubal surgery, prescriptions, acupuncture, and vitamins, I've paid about $6000 out of pocket this year. That is with insurance helping to pay for diagnosis, but not treatment.
Describe Deborah Smith's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
I have not gotten far enough into the process to answer this question.

We have never felt pushed towards a certain treatment plan and in fact she [Dr. Deborah Smith] recommended IUI before moving to IVF. It worked for our first child and now after three unsuccessful IUI rounds we are moving on to IVF...She is candid but compassionate. She spends as much time as necessary to explain your condition, proposed procedures, and likelihood of success. She makes medical determinations based on your specific case and not general statistics.
No weaknesses [at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center]. The clinic has been awesome. They work with your insurance carrier and try to keep the costs as low as they can. Everyone is friendly, compassionate, and fully invested in helping people achieve their baby dreams...I worked with Emily [nurse] for the IUI rounds and she was excellent. Always returned my calls promptly and even hugged me when the rounds did not work. I just started working with Melanie for IVF and she has been wonderful as well. Compassionate and responsive.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith has been candid but compassionate. I feel comfortable in her care and trust that she has the expertise to help us achieve our baby dreams. She has spent hours with my husband and I explaining everything and answering out questions. She never pushes you towards a specific treatment plan and I think her costs are reasonable compared to other facilities.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Do your homework. Research the different options. Come prepared with questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith is amazing. She is candid but compassionate. She spends as much time as necessary to explain your condition, proposed procedures, and likelihood of success. She makes medical determinations based on your specific case and not general statistics. We have never felt pushed towards a certain treatment plan and in fact she recommended IUI before moving to IVF. It worked for our first child and now after three unsuccessful IUI rounds we are moving on to IVF.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
With the IUI cycles we used Femera and an HCG trigger shot. In addition, I am routinely seeing fertility acupuncturist. IUI worked once. Now with IVF, we are starting the treatment plan so I do not yet know what medications I will be taking until March.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Emily and now Melanie)
I worked with Emily for the IUI rounds and she was excellent. Always returned my calls promptly and even hugged me when the rounds did not work. I just started working with Melanie for IVF and she has been wonderful as well. Compassionate and responsive.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
IUI rounds are &800 I believe but with medication and appointments probably about $1200 a round. IVF with medication will cost us between $19,000-$23,000.
Describe Deborah Smith's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
It depends on the case. Dr. Smith would evaluate the embryos and the likelihood of implantation.

How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
I would recommend Rocky Mountain Fertility Center to anyone going through infertility. Dr. Smith and her staff are professional, knowledgeable, and supportive throughout the entire IVF process. I did not do my full IVF treatment from Colorado, because I live in South Dakota, so I did not see Dr. Smith as much, but Angela, my coordinator was super helpful and supportive and if I ever needed to talk with Dr.Smith, I could call her on her personal phone and she would answer any questions I had. It is hard to do IVF from another state, but even though I still felt valued.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
She is very blunt and straight to the point, but she truly does care about her patients and is there to be helpful and supportive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith and the staff at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center treated me with the utmost kindness, patience, and empathy. They understood how delicate the struggle of infertility is and they were very supportive in times of stress.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
I lost both of my fallopian tubes so IVF is my only option. I had a very easy IVF protocol compared to some. I did not have to take as many injections or pills, but they still had me doing acupuncture, along with all the testing to help them find the best time to transfer embryos. The team was very hopeful that I would get pregnant the first round, but unfortunately that did not happen for me.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Angela)
Angela was very organized and informative, I felt like I could ask her anything and she tried her hardest to get back to me as soon as possible to help ease any uncertainty I had.
Describe your experience with Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
After every treatment, test, and medication, I spent around $23,000. That was for a very simple protocol and treatment plan.
Describe Deborah Smith's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
My doctor recommended transferring both, especially since I only had 2 viable embryos.

She [Dr. Smith] is a very blunt doctor, but I prefer a doctor that's going to tell me how it is rather than try to cover something up. She is very knowledgeable in the field of infertility and could explain the procedures we were going through so that we understood everything.... She was very personable and easy to talk with about any concerns.... for egg retrieval we used Follistim, menopur and ganirelix. Pregnyl to trigger. We did the egg retrieval and retrieved 33 eggs. From those 33 only 11 were injected with sperm, the only viable sperm they could find from my husband.
Good location, friendly staff, staff basically knows you by name after you have been there [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] enough times. Very clean rooms/waiting room. The blood draw station is a little out in the open, which I didn't prefer because I hate giving blood but if you don't have a problem with giving blood you'll be fine.... Heather was amazing! Quick to respond to emails, just great. She unfortunately left when we were about to start our third cycle so we were assigned another nurse, Melanie. I felt like Melanie really stepped in and took over just great. Very pleased.

I don't remember the dosage used but for egg retrieval we used Follistim, menopur and ganirelix. Pregnyl to trigger. We did the egg retrieval and retrieved 33 eggs. From those 33 only 11 were injected with sperm, the only viable sperm they could find from my husband. No embryos were created from this cycle. Next cycle my period never came. Third cycle we added leuprolide to ensure I got my period. We also used donor sperm this cycle to ensure we got an embryo. After embryo transfer we used progesterone.

One day 5 we had morulas, not blastocysts, so we transferred 2. She did warn that we may end up with twins but we only ended up with a singleton.

She doesn't take the time to let you know what's going on, what to expect moving forward, or to really talk with you at all. One failed attempt at pregnancy after the next, and she never once said anything encouraging to me, or offered any support emotionally about what I was going through...
If you are looking for a practice that treats you with kindness, respect, empathy and care? Run the other way. If you are looking for a practice that is organized, communicative and reliable? Run the other way...There is no financial guideline given to patients so that you know what to expect. They collect your money and tell you that'll be all for the month, and then out of nowhere they say there's another random test needed. They will refuse to move forward with what you have already paid for if you don't give them more money for more testing. Shouldn't this be organized? This IS what they do day in and day out, right? It is just very obvious that this practice isn't in it for their patients, and for helping families grow. For me, the lack of organization, lack of effective communication, and lack of empathy just added stress and concern to an already difficult situation. I am sharing my experience in an effort to let other women in my situation know the honest truth of what you'll be getting as a Patient with this practice. My recommendation would be to save your time, and to save your money. Go with a clinic that will be kind, organized, and easy to work with. Go with a clinic that will not take the humanity out of the experience of getting pregnant, and will treat you with the very basic decency you deserve.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
This Doctor doesn't hesitate to take your hundreds and thousands of dollars, all while refusing to even say hello to you when she walks into the exam room. She doesn't take the time to let you know what's going on, what to expect moving forward, or to really talk with you at all. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
To run the other way and go somewhere else.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
I felt more like a cash cow than I did a human while being treated at this office. They seemed to only be interested in taking my money, and not really interested in the overall goal of getting me pregnant.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
Clomid with insemination for two cycles. Then letrozol with insemination for one cycle.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Emily)
When in dyer need of clarification after a million Nurses told me a million different things, I asked for the Doctor to call me, and was promptly informed that "the Doctor doesn't call patients... that's what the Nurses are for." That's a problem... there is just no ACTUAL care taken by this Doctor at all.

Dr. Deborah Smith is involved in every appointment and completes every ultrasound herself. She is very thorough in her discussion and a very good bedside manner. She's always willing to talk and discuss your questions with you along the way... Long Lupron Protocol. This is a very common protocol used and we wanted to ensure decent egg collection. While our antral follicle count is high, the goal was to try and replicate getting close to that number. We didn't need to change much at all throughout that process from beginning to end. We weren't able to replicate my antral follicle count, but my numbers were still within her range of what's to be expected.
The strengths [for Rocky Mtn Fertility Center]: great 1:1 service, fast prompt service, very informative, well researched. The weaknesses: I'm not sure we would have known any of what we know now unless we had gone through a cycle to learn what worked and didn't work. I'm not sure it's fair to judge them on what we've learned in our scenario....I just know we had to go elsewhere to adjust accordingly.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
I've read horror stories meeting with the fertility docs and so glad to have had such a great experience with her. I think there were some sperm lab results that were missed along the way that should have slightly shifted our direction of options from frozen sperm to fresh sperm usage. I'm not sure we would have known those things without going through the process. She had a great course of action and was diligent throughout. After our first chemical, she was very proactive in sorting through our options to look at all possibilities. That piece was nice to try and find the "answers."
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
You will definitely get great 1:1 attention throughout the process.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
The costs were a lot higher then expected! We thought the cash pay all in IVF ICSI price package would include everything until the positive beta. We still receive blood work bills to this day that we thought were covered. It added up to be a lot more then we originally budgeted for. I think the payment covered just the lead up appointments/ultrasounds and not even sure if it covered much blood work. When doing a cost analysis of options...it made sense to get more elsewhere.
Describe Deborah Smith's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
We did not CCS test our embryos and she was more then fine with transferring 2 embryos the first transfer. If we had CCS testing them, maybe her recommendation would have been different.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
There was just ONE sheet about hubbie's sperm in our file that we found, that made us look to meet with a new urologist for a 2nd opinion. While some fertility centers may take that report and say "that's ok, we can work with that." We definitely wanted a better option to give us better chances of normal embryos.

Just because she [Dr. Smith] set course a particular treatment, didn't mean she was sitting back and waiting for the next step on the calendar. As the process/cycle progressed she was constantly re-evaluating to ensure that we were giving our embryos the best chance at success! She showed compassion and sorrow when things didn't go as planned and she celebrated with us when we got our positive test.
Front desk staff [at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] is not as strong as the nursing staff and dr. Not as friendly and relationship building as the "back end" folks are. The front desk wasn't rude by any means, I was just looking for them to be a bit more inviting and try harder to remember my name without me telling it to them every time I walked in. The strengths of this clinic are second to none. There is the perfect balance of getting the facts, and being showered with compassion. I always felt like I was sitting down with a friend rather than a nursing/dr team.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr Smith is a wonderful mix of telling you the truth - good and bad - giving it to you straight with all the facts, AND showing compassion and reminding you to keep hope and how important that is to the process as well. She was incredibly knowledgeable, and took as much time as we needed in each appointment to answer every single question we could think of. Just because she set course a particular treatment, didn't mean she was sitting back and waiting for the next step on the calendar. As the process/cycle progressed she was constantly re-evaluating to ensure that we were giving our embryos the best chance at success! Do research to have questions ready for Dr. Smith. She will absolutely take the time to make sure you are as informed as possible.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Dr. Smith knew myself and my husband and our "story" every time she walked in the room to greet us.
Describe the protocols Deborah Smith used in your cycles at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center and their degree of success.
antagonist protocol with estrogen priming. 300 IU Gonal-F, 300 IU Menopur, .6 Saizen, 100 mg Clomid and Ganirelix. I have DOR so it was an aggressive plan from the start to ensure we could get some of my eggs before discussing the need for donor eggs. Dr. Smith was pleasantly surprised with how well my body reacted to the meds. There were no changes to the protocol throughout monitoring as my body was (for once!) doing what it needed to be doing. IVF cycle 1: 8 eggs retrieved 7 mature 5 fertilized (ICSI) Only 1 made it to day 5 - Froze IVF Cycle 2: 6 eggs retrieved 6 mature 3 fertilized (ICSI) 2 made it to day 5 - Transferred both Result - chemical pregnancy IVF Cycle 3: 5 eggs retrieved 4 mature 4 fertilized (ICSI) 3 made it to day 5 Transferred all 3 PLUS the frozen from round 1 Result: currently 35 weeks pregnant! Protocol listed above was the same for all 3 cycles.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Angela)
Angela was incredibly compassionate throughout the entire process. She was available by phone and email and answered every little question no matter how silly it might be. She became a friend through the process. One of our cycles was during my birthday, which she noticed from my chart, and made it a point to contact me and wish me a happy birthday. She went out of her way to make sure that I understood everything and was as happy and comfortable as I could be in going through this process. She made my husband and I feel like we were her only patients when in reality I knew we were one of many!

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
All monitoring appointments were done with Dr Smith and no one else. I loved that she was involved in every step of the process. It made me feel like we were important and that Dr Smith always knew what was going on with us in that very moment to make the best call on next steps. Monitoring appointments were done in the morning, which worked perfectly with our work schedules. There was time after every monitoring appointment for us to sit down with our nurse and go over the information/results of the monitoring and ask any questions needed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center.
$9,500 for each IVF cycle - Meds were $7-$8k. We were on the highest protocol so meds were on the higher side.

I feel like Dr. Smith could have explained things a little more clearly on my level for me to understand. I am new to all this and had no idea what questions to ask or have anything to expect. I really didn't know what to expect... The intake wasn't that extensive and she was assuming my diagnosis of PCOS was accurate. She only tested me for my cycle day 3 hormones and was already telling me about Donor eggs and such
It [Rocky Mtn Fertility Center] seemed a little disorganized but it could have been just the front clerk and not the entire clinic. But i was there for a bit before they realized it was my first appointment. It was very quiet, and not too informative without me asking questions.... I had only contact with her 2 times but the times we corresponded or communicated, she was nice, empathetic and answered what questions i had in regards to my treatment.
How was your experience with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
I feel like Dr. Smith could have explained things a little more clearly on my level for me to understand. I am new to all this and had no idea what questions to ask or have anything to expect. I really didn't know what to expect.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?
Don't go see Dr. Smith if you expect any type of empathy or compassion. I didn't know what to expect but what i do expect is a little more emotion from my dr than what i received.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Deborah Smith at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center?

[Dr. Deborah Smith] is always very personable and knowledgeable. Very easy to work with...is extremely knowledgeable and straight to the point. She knows exactly what to test for and the path to recommend. After only a month of seeing Dr. Smith and Emily we were blessed with a baby boy!!...Checked to make sure all vitals looked good such as vitamins levels, egg quality, sperm quality. I was extremely low in vitamins D. Started taking 50,000 IU dosage to get my levels back in order. Also took femara at 5 mg with Ovidrel shot with IUI and received positive pregnancy test!

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
She [Dr. Smith] knows what she’s doing and has a lot going on like I imagine most other fertility docs do. She does rush through visits it seems to get on to her next patient. I will say that she is readily available to answer the questions we have for the nurses...Initially my wife’s clomismd dose was to low so that took two cycles to be adjusted . We were doing timed intercourse with meds. Then we were pregnant and had a miscarriage and she was very blunt and rough even though we were devastated. Then we started iui using pregnyl instead of ovidrel we used before. Two iui later no results. We’re trying a third iui then probably have to go to ivf.
She [nurse at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] is compassionate caring understanding is willing to work with us in every way...About 1000 for iui 600 for timed intercourse...They have one receptionist now who is so dry and careless and just doesn’t seem to care to be there. As a receptionist being the first line of contact with patients I feel this would be very important...She [Dr. Smith] knows what she’s doing and has a lot going on like I imagine most other fertility docs do.

She [Dr. Smith] was very good at making sure we had all the information needed in order to make the transfer sucessful. Because she recommended an ERA we were able to get pregnant on our first transfer and not lose our only 2 embryos... We did a ERA trial transfer and my progesterone was at 6pm. Test showed that the transfer would need to be at a different time so we moved my progesterone to 6a and our transfer was successful.
Small clinic is a strength and weakness. They [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] are open when they need to be for transfers and lab testing and dr smith is always on call. But closed in the afternoon on a few days for appointments. The clinic is very personalized to us and our needs.... Dr. Smith let us decide on the number of embryos to transfer and educated us the pros and cons

She [Dr. Smith] also suggested that my husband go see a urologist that specialized in male factor infertility. Although we have always know we both had issues to overcome, noone ever suggested that before. It was one of the best suggestions we'd had. We didn't find affix for his problems, but at least now we understand the issue better...She was wonderful. Always willing to take the time to answer my questions fully. She is extremely knowledgeable and helped to deal with other issues that even my general practice Dr didn't take the time to fix.
Overall they [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] are a wonderful clinic. The only part I wished was better was getting a person on the phone at any time. Sometimes I felt like all I did was get stuck in a phone loop...[Cost of treatment] Approximately $11,000 for the cycle plus the cost of meds...She [Dr. Smith] took the time to thoroughly answer my questions. I wasn't pushed off into a recorded message.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr Smith is very smart. She bases decisions off data and adjusts treatment as needed for best chances. She has been honest with us. We enjoy seeing her as she is very personable as well. I feel like we are working with the best.... 1st 2 cycles cloned with iui. 1 miscarriage 1 negative. Next 3 cycles a different hormone drug and iui. All negative. Last cycle injectable follitism with iui. Also negative.... The most important thing the doctor can do is know what they are doing.
Nurses [Rocky Mountain Fertility Center] and doc are great and compasionate... Reception was great, but now there is a lady Bonnie, who is disorganized and she has put me under my female partners name and tried to over change ya. Leticia should be back soon so that will be nice.... We have spent about 20k on medication and treatment through 6 cycles... I absolutely cannot say enough good things about these 2 ladies. Excellent care. They are so personable and really help to take the edge off of the process.

Deborah Smith showed a lot of knowledge. She gave us the facts, percentages, and explanations in a professional warm manner. She seemed to be a positive, caring person who always addressed our concerns. She’s helped my wife and I conceive our first child, and we couldn’t have done it without her. While our fertility has gotten worse since the our first child, we still have faith and trust that Debra will help us conceive second child.
3 round of IUI were around $3000. IVF costs around $20000-$25000 [at Rocky Mountain Fertility Center]... They are very caring, compassionate, and factual. My wife and I always felt comfortable.... hile our fertility has gotten worse since the our first child, we still have faith and trust that Debra will help us conceive second child.
