Shady Grove Fertility Pennsylvania (US Fertility Network clinic)

Not good from the male perspective. Was on a medication that lowered my sperm count temporarily. Made sure that she was aware of this. Told me to take the sperm count anyways. She called me up and recklessly told me I had 1 living sperm in the sample and that I needed to see the "excellent" urologist in Towson, MD. I went to see a urologist independent in Lancaster after I was off the medication and ended up with a sperm count of 110 Million. She gave me a lame excuse, but the mental trauma was still there from her misdiagnosis. How could a so-called "fertility expert" make such a bad diagnosis?

Do as much as you can independently of SGF.

Dr. Espisito is the doctor who manages our IVF cycle. She prescribes and adjust the fertility drugs during a cycle. She does/has not perform(ed) any of the procedures (egg retrieval, diagnostics or implantation). Under Dr. Espisito's guidance, we currently have one frozen embryo. My wife's cancer diagnosis requires constant communication with her oncologist as the IVF treatments progress. She has been responsive to planning a course of action that balances achieving our pregnancy goals with urgency of seeking a positive outcome and prognosis from the cancer treatment.

After the initial consultation with Dr. Esposito, be prepared to go through the communication "firewall" put in place by Shady Grove. Communication is done through a patient portal. Each patient has an assigned nurse, but there is a lot of room for missed communications and miscommunication. This can be frustrating. The corporate communication structure is beyond the doctor's control, but one should be aware of it.

The treatment protocols have been fairly standard in terms of medication and dosing. The lone adjustment was a prescription to maintain hormone levels that agree with the cancer treatment. Adjustments to the dosing were made after each diagnostic test (blood work and ultrasound).

All out of pocket. IVF is prohibitively expensive.

As we are still in the middle of treatment, I can’t say of course that all expectations have been met. I can say I feel confident in his opinion and treatment to get myself and my husband there. I had multiple calls directly from him going over important updates and when I asked to speak to him directly, it was always made to happen immediately. I never waited more than an hour or two to get a direct call back from him or transferred to him immediately. That made me feel very important as his patient. He also was eager to answer any and every question I asked him honestly and fully. I always felt like I was heard and that he never let me go with any unanswered questions. The only negative is that I have not gotten to have appointments with him in person I assume due to locations. But with the way he responds, it does almost feel like I’ve met with him before!

Trust him with your treatment as he’s made the necessary changes when something did not work for us to make it better and ask all of the questions so he can make you feel more comfortable!

For IVF egg retrieval: Birth control pill leading up to stimulation - reduce risk of cysts and regulate cycle timing Prep of eggs to help stimulate multiple follicle growth - Menopur (75-225IU) Follistim/Gonal-F (25-300IU) Prevent ovulation until retrieval ready - Cetrotide/Ganirelix Ovulation induction - Lupron Slow and steady medication dosing seemed to have my body respond the best (Menopur 150IU and Gonal-F 75IU) My first egg retrieval did not yield the results we expected so he adjusted dosing for my second retrieval which was more successful!

Of course IVF comes at no small cost, but Dr Connell gave us all of our options and did explain each of them in detail and what he felt would be best for us.

Dr. Nguyen is very compassionate, soft spoken and kind. She seems to genuinely care about her patients. She will answer any questions you have and re-answer in another way if you do not understand. As she is a doctor, she has to be precautions and weigh the risk of certain things, which can be frustrating if you do not agree with the course of action. Overall Dr. Nguyen is a lovely and intelligent doctor who treats you with respect.

Advocate for yourself. Some times your gut feeling and your wants outweigh “studies.”

The first 5 months we used Clomid and letrozole to help aid in pregnancy, which was not successful. I did also use estrace tablets both vaginally and by mouth I decided to skip IUI and move straight to IVF. We continued with the treatment plan to retrieve my eggs. I then did estradiol injections every 3 days. After the first transfer they added progesterone injections daily. I’m still currently using both

The monitoring appointments were from 7 AM to 9:15 AM. I found that if you call with enough days notice you could get the exact slot that you needed to fit your schedule. The ultrasound technicians were fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about Mindy and Juliana. They were absolutely fantastic, professional, and caring.

Altogether we spent approximately $30,000

We like Dr. Nguyen because we got pregnant! In the first meeting, she lays out the pros and cons of IVF. She informs us of sufficient information about IVF, which helps us to decide to embark on this journey. During the treatment, she is the brain behind every step. There are clear instructions for us at every stage. More importantly, she educates us on the reason why we are doing it This helps us to go through many injections and pills. The whole process is very efficient. She did not let us waste any time. The retrietval to transfer processes are well-timed and well planned. We get a positive pregnancy result even earlier than we expected. In summary, if you choose to have Dr. Nguyen as your fertility doctor, you are in good hands. The drawback is that the whole process lacks human interaction, which may be due to COVID-19. Thus, if you plan to have IVF treatment in Shady grove fertility center, you need to prepare yourself to learn how to communicate mainly through the patient portals and messaging system. With that being said, the result is the most important. We feel that Shady Grove fertility and Dr. Nguyen offers efficient, professional, expert, and result-driven medical services to a couple that dreams of having a baby of their own.

If you plan to have IVF treatment in Shady grove fertility center, you need to prepare yourself to learn how to communicate mainly through the patient portals and messaging system. Also, you need to follow the doctor's instructions closely no matter how hard it is.

She gave me birth control pills to regulate the period. Then she gives Gonal Rff pens to grow multiple eggs at the same time. Then I have a trigger shot before the egg retrieval. After egg retrieval, we have embryo testing to eliminate unviable embryos. Then she froze the embryos. Meanwhile, I am getting shots for preparing the uterus linings. Once it was ready, we had embryo transfer, which results in a positive pregnancy.

About $27500 without medication, which is about $5000.

I agree with single embryo transfer. It is good for both mother and baby.

I can't say enough positive things about Dr. Esposito. She validated my feelings of despair, allowed me to cry it out then explained how she could help. She gave me the science behind everything which is what I needed and together we came up with a plan that everyone was comfortable with. Even though I didn't see her for most of my monitoring sessions, I know she was following my progress and even personally called to let me know my IVF cycle was canceled due to COVID 19. I know that couldn't have been easy for her. I left my consult with hope. During timed intercourse she adjusted my medication as needed and explained everything. I felt well taken care of!

Be open and honest with her about your goals and what you are comfortable doing. She was customize your treatment for you but will take your feelings and desires into consideration.

I did 3 cycles of timed intercourse using Letrozole. The first cycle I did 5mg for 5 days. My follicles didn't respond so I was given Clomid for 5 days. I then had an over response. For the next 2 cycles I alternated 5mg and 7.5mg for a total of 5 days. That seemed to be the right dosage for me because by cycle day 10 or 11 I was ready for my trigger shot. My body responded well to everything, the follicles grew as they were supposed to but none of the cycles ended with a pregnancy. After speaking with Dr. Esposito we decided to go straight to IVF. We were getting ready to start our first IVF cycle when it got canceled due to COVID 19.

I had a $40 copay for each time I met with Dr. Esposito and for each ultrasound performed during monitoring. Medication for each timed intercourse cycle was between $89-$90. IVF was about $23,000.

My doctor recommends single embryo transfer to reduce the risk of multiples.

Dr. Nguyen explained everything in a way to help me understand a little better and she took plenty of time to answer my questions. Also, after I lost my pregnancy, Dr. Nguyen called me to check on me which I appreciated so much. She let me know they were here for me when I was ready to start up again. I was having a tough time with my schedule (when I decided to go for my second consultation) and Dr. Nguyen actually agreed to have my second consultation over the phone. I just really think the world of her ... actully all of the doctors that I’ve met at Shady Grove were great!

I actually only had one cycle with Dr. Nguyen. She upped the dosage of clomid and put me immediately on progesterone after my iui. I became pregnant with that iui.

I was lucky in that my insurance covered the iui. I just To fulfill my co pays until I reached my out of pocket max. Ivf, however, is not covered and I am waiting to hear from someone from finance to go over prices. One positive thing is the ivf, I believe, is guaranteed and if you do not conceive, I believe you are reimbursed. I need to fully confirm that but that is what I heard on the radio advertisement for sgf.

I just loved that Dr. Nguyen didn’t waste any time and she took all precautions for me. The previous practice I went to tested my blood the week following iui to decide whether or not I would need progesterone ... my levels were good after my first iui so they never put me on progesterone and never tested me again. I loved that Dr. Nguyen said it cannot hurt to take the progesterone - we won’t waste that week following your Iui. It could have been the missing link to those three failed iuis with the previous practice!

Dr. Kara Nguyen is a very caring and compassionate Dr. When we went for our initial consultation she took a lot of time to explain my low amh results. I told her I wanted to be pregnant before the end of summer (consultation was in April) and she said we can do that. I still felt skeptical and scared to get my hopes up after almost 4 years of infertility but she delivered on that (got my positive pregnancy test in August). Also when my fresh transfer got cancelled and changed to a freeze all because of my progesterone level before my retrieval, I cried and she called me to make sure I understood why and make sure I was okay. Also, when she called to tell me I was pregnant, I could tell she was genuinely happy and excited for me.

Don't be afraid to go and do a consultation. I know a IVF sounds really scary but Dr. Kara Nguyen will explain everything and have a plan for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions!

We first tried 1 IUI because my insurance covered it. We were skeptical it would work due to my husband's low count and wondered if it was worth trying but also nervous about going straight to IVF. Dr. Kara Nguyen said it wouldn't hurt to try one IUI and the ultrasounds and bloodwork from that would be helpful in planning the IVF so it wouldn't be a complete waste if it didn't work. IUI cycle we did 100 mg Clomid on cycle days 3-7 and were supposed to do the trigger shot of Ovidrel on day 10 but that got pushed back until day 13 because of follicle size. Received negative pregnancy test after IUI. Started IVF on next cycle. Birth control pills for 15 days, Lupron (2.8cc) and birth control pills for 3 days, Lupron for 9 days, Follistim 300iU and Menopur 75iU for 14 days then Trigger shot and Egg Retrieval. My Follistim and Menopur ended up getting adjusted and my egg retrieval was pushed back because my follicles were growing slower and they wanted to have as many mature as possible. Also my progesterone got too high during the end of my stims so my cycle was switched to a freeze all and then an FET for the best chance of implantation.

IUI was covered by my insurance but cost about $180. IVF shared risk (up to 6 cycles including cryopreservation and FET's) after income discount was $16,500. IVF medications were about $4,600.

My doctor strongly encouraged only transferring 1 embryo. We didn't even really have the option of transferring multiple. I think it depends on your diagnosis, but the explanation I was given was that transferring multiple didn't really increase the chance of implantation but it did increase the risk of multiples which would be a high risk pregnancy.

When I first met Espositto I felt like I was at the right place & she made me feel like family. I will be forever thankful for all she did to help us achieve one of our dreams of having a child. She was compassionate & caring from the beginning & throughout all my bad experiences. I just wish from the start some things would of been mentioned about doing like pgs testing & ERA biopsy not at the end when I had practically used all my embryos. It was nice when she would call me before a transfer & wish me good luck but towards the end it was always communicating w the nurse. I am currently trying yet for another baby but unfortunately have to start over from a retrieval & switched drs due to I feel abandoned by her now. I know she is a great dr but for some reason she refuses to call me or maybe the nurse isn't asking her to. She has been a blessing to me but I have a new dr now that I hope will give it their all to help me achieve my dreams of having a second baby!

Don't be hesitant to ask questions or second guess anything! She is a great dr but its your future♡

One retrieval 10 eggs 9 mature & all 9 fertilized w Icsi to great quality blasts. Transferred 1 fresh ended in chemical. 2nd FET w 1 was neg. 3rd FET w 2 was pos & ended in live birth♡. 4th FET w 2 was pos but ended in MC at 9wks. 5th FET w 2 was pos but ended in MC at 7.5 wks. 6th FET w 1 was chemical but embryo stuck in catheter & had to reprep it for transfer again. My 3rd -6th i did endo scratch w prednisolone & lovenox w other transfer meds.

You could go in at certain hrs in morn & mostly when it worked best for you. Sometimes you could go in & it was extremely busy & waited a long time. Then there was days you were in & out.

Many many $1000s. Too much unfortunately. All out of pocket

She said one for 1st two transfers but after that it was 2.

Dr. Esposito is a very professional doctor who maintains the high standard of the clinic without feeling cold or clinical. She is very conversational with patients but is able to answer questions directly and provide more or less information based on your level of inquiry. I appreciate the balance between her warm manner and high level of professionalism. Our conversations have always been candid and thorough. She is gentle when performing evaluations and never seems like she is in a hurry.

Don't make any assumptions based on fear or lack of experience--the best way to make the next step is to get more information. The more you know the better prepared you are to move forward with clarity and confidence.

The trajectory that we have mapped out with Dr. Esposito is to start my first round of fertility medications this month, starting with medication and ovulation charting the first round and then move to medication with timed intercourse and then medication, egg harvesting an then IUI as necessary.

IUI is 1,800 per cycle--Medication costs were per insurance provider.

Dr. Esposito was explicit in her explanation of treatment. She made sure to answer our questions fully and she covered all risks involved. We appreciated how she spoke to us in a down-to-earth manner and she treated us with importance and sensitivity. She was reassuring and when our first cycle failed she felt deeply unsatisfied and outlined exactly how the protocol would change and how she was going to make this happen for us. "I just want to make your dream of becoming parents come true", those were her exact words.

Have faith. Trust the process. Ask questions- there is no such thing as "too many questions". Make sure you feel like all of your concerns are addressed and you are being heard. If you are a patient of Dr. Esposito, you will have no trouble with that. Be upfront and transparent.

I was on a menopur/gonal protocol with femera to keep my endometriosis at bay and introduced cetrotide towards the end of stims to prevent ovulation. Triggered with HCG.

Meds were between $5K-$6K, genetic testing was $5K. The rest was covered by my insurance. We exhausted insurance benefits for 2nd cycle so we opted to go with Shared Risk so we had a fair shot at making and bringing our baby home. Shared Risk is out of pocket and runs $19,500 plus $3,500 for genetic testing.

I loved her. I loved that she was blunt about things and her opinions... always having research to back it up too!

She doesn't always have a filter, but I loved that. She's eccentric and very knowledgeable.

I did 6 IUIs, and she was up front that she only wanted to do 3 max, less if we were comfortable. She doesn't like IUIs as much due to such low success rates. I totally agree with her!! Unfortunately my insurance forced us to do 6 before moving onto IVF. We did 3 cycles on clomid, 3 cycles on injectable meds then moved onto Antagonist Protocol for IVF with ICSI.

IVF,ICSI cost about $10000 and $4000 in meds. Luckily we have insurance contracted rate which knocked it to $7000 and then insurance paid $4700 of that. So for us it was around $6400. IUI Was about $500-$700 contracted rate I think

Dr. Bromer explained our options thoroughly, answered any and all questions we had, let me vent when I needed to, and was overall extremely supportive. He encouraged genetic counseling, as well as testing of our miscarried baby in order to determine what had led to the miscarriage, both of which provided us with some really helpful information.

Ask questions, and seek to understand your treatment. Dr. Bromer is an advocate of both, and will help you to make informed decisions.

I truly don't remember the details of our fertility drugs, though I know I took Lupron both times. Our first egg retrieval yielded 8 embryos, only 2 of which were suitable for transfer. Though we achieved pregnancy, I miscarried at 8 weeks. At Dr. Bromer's suggestion, we had testing on the miscarried baby and learned that he had Klinefelter's syndrome. Our 2nd egg transfer we used ICSI. This also yielded 8 embyos, and though all had fertilized, most had done so abnormally. Only 2 were suitable for transfer. Dr. Bromer said that over two cycles our fertilization rate was on the lower end, and that it was possible that there was some undiagnosed factor impacting our fertilization, which we would want to explore should the cycle fail. Fortunately both embryos implanted, and we were blessed with boy/girl twins.

The consultation and diagnostics were covered by my insurance. Fertility drugs cost in the neighborhood of $2500 per cycle. Shared risk IVF cost $20,000, and covered up to six fresh cycles of IVF.

Our fertility clinic promotes eSET. However for a variety of reasons, we elected to transfer both of our embryos each time we did IVF. Dr. Bromer was extremely supportive of this decision. In fact, when the doctor performing my transfer questioned and even discouraged our decision to transfer both, it was Dr. Bromer's support that helped me stand firm in our decision and insist that both be transferred, as Dr. Bromer and I had discussed. Looking at both of our beautiful kids (born full-term after an uneventful pregnancy), I'm so glad we had Dr. Bromer on our side.

My doctor was not only friendly but she spoke in a way both my husband and I will understand. She not only showed compassion but she truly made sure we didn't feel alone. Throughout our testing phases and still through our financial hurdle we are trying to overcome to receive actual IVF treatment, she has been thorough and sympathetic.

She is wonderful!

Due to the results of our genetic testing, IVF is our only option. She has explained why including risks of any other treatment along with the benefits IVF would provide once we undergo treatment.

Kara was very friendly and followed up after each failed IUI. I did find it kind of odd that we were offered the option to do IUI from the get-go, if we chose to. I also wondered about investigating more into the cause of my infertility. Overall I trust her experience and her bedside manner is great.

Ask plenty of questions.

First cycle we tried 50mg clomid, trigger shot and timed intercourse. Because the clomid dried me out, we moved to IUI. We did 100 mg and have different results each cycle (sometimes multiple eggs, sometimes 1). We also did trigger shot and progesterone. The third IUI my lining was thin so we added estrogen. All cycles were negative.

I had insurance. IVF was about $2500 with insurance, $4500 for meds and $1800 for freezing.

Dr Esposito gave us Hope and Faith that she will do everything possible to help us through this process. She offered every option and let us choose what we felt was best for our family. She was kind and compassionate and very knowledgeable. She was prompt on responding and very down-to-earth when needed to be.

I would suggest to have some good beneficial questions.

This office bumps patients between doctors and Dr Esposito was never my choice of physician. I was never happy to see that she would be performing a procedure because she was artificial, distant, and not able to make a human connection.

Try someone else in the practice.

Shady Grove seems to use a standard set of protocols, so don't be afraid to push back and ask if that is what is right for you.

Dr Nguyen was very friendly and knowledgeable. She took the time to answer all my questions. When my only normal embryo did not survive thawing, she was very kind and empathetic. She spoke with me on the phone as long as I needed. My one negative, in hindsight, is that on the initial consult, she was too positive about possible outcomes. I was expecting things to go well and to have a baby in my arms.

The same advice I'd give anybody do your research and when you think you know enough, do some more.

She has made personal phone calls to us herself and to give us exciting news about our embryos. I feel like she is a part of our family even though our first cycle didn't turn out as we planned, she was right by our side to let us know she cared.

Go into your consultation with an open mind and be patient as she explains every detail of your journey. As much as it is frustrating she is rooting for you!

From our first meeting with Dr. Hutchinson we knew right away that we were in good hands. Throughout our infertility journey Dr. Hutchinson was kind, caring, and so supportive. Even with some obstacles that we faced, she was always positive and ready to go with a game plan for next steps. She was truly a cheerleader in our corner every step of the way. The time and attention she gives to her patients is unmatched and I am thankful for her guidance through this journey.

I don't remember the specifics.

Dr Kallen has a very calm, quiet bedside manner but don't let that fool you - he is extremely invested in every patient he sees. When my case sometimes presented challenges, he would go back and look at all of my past scans and consult with his peers to determine the best course of action. There was a time during my treatment when Dr. Kallen was away for a few weeks, and I honestly wish I had paused treatment because I began only trusting him with my care. Not that the other physicians aren't great, but he really knows what he's doing and is fully invested in his patients.

Look no further!

I presented with PCOS and a high AMH - which actually proved to be more challenging to get my follicles to reach maturation without my hormone levels going too high. We started out with a few IUIs, and moved onto IVF in April 2022 when IUI did not work. Dr. Kallen was very clear about all of the steps of IVF, so we went in armed with as much information as possible. We had one unsuccessful egg retrieval (which was actually not performed by Dr Kallen). For our second retrieval, Dr. Kallen ensured he was the one to perform it. We ended up with 13 good embryos. Our next challenge came when my uterine lining just wasn't getting as thick as we ideally would want it before a transfer. The first transfer did not work, but luckily the second one did and I am now 4 months pregnant.

Luckily we had good insurance, so after deductibles and out-of-pocket were met, insurance covered the rest.

A lot of people asked me why we did not put multiple embryos in, and I said that was what Dr. Kallen recommended. I do believe that is the right approach - one healthy baby should always be the end goal.

Our experience with Dr. Kallen was incredibly disheartening and upsetting. There was no personal approach to my treatment, he never suggested running any additional testing and he jumped right to the most expensive treatment options. He was incredibly pushy and I would never trust him as my doctor. We only had two appointments with Dr. Kallen, our initial consult and the treatment consult, both of which were done over Telehealth calls. After receiving what seemed like good news from our nurses, our treatment consult felt incredibly misleading and confusing. Dr. Kallen ran through our testing quickly, said that everything looked okay except my low AMH levels and then immediately went on to explain why IVF was necessary. He spent a majority of the appointment running through all of the financial packages that SGF offers for IVF, which felt like a business push instead of a focused/personal treatment plan for us. He ended the appointment by saying that our numbers were extremely concerning, which contradicted what he said at the beginning of the appointment, leaving us extremely confused and upset. My husband and I decided to get a second opinion with MLF where they ran additional mid-cycle testing, which Dr. Kallen never suggested or mentioned. This testing led them to find out that I am not ovulating, a situation that can be fixed with medication. For comparison, MLF has NEVER even talked to us about IVF, as it would be the absolute last resort if the less intense treatment options do not work. Because Dr. Kallen never suggested running these additional tests, there is a possibility that we could have put ourselves through extremely expensive fertility treatments and I could have put my body though something that was completely unnecessary, which is the most frustrating and upsetting part of our experience with Dr. Kallen.

Be an advocate for your own health. If something doesn't feel right, seek a second opinion. But overall, I would not recommend Dr. Kallen as a doctor to anyone.

Dr. Kallen suggested that we could try IUI, but focused on the fact that the success rates are not high. He mostly pushed for IVF.

Dr. Kallen is very no-nonsense and clinical. While I don't expect every doctor to have a wonderful, cheerful personality, his is less than ideal for women going through the very emotional and stressful infertility process. Unless you ask a specific question he does not volunteer information. Each monitoring appointment was very quick and he offered no opinion as to how I was progressing - I had to wait until my nurse called with blood test results to get more information on what was seen on the ultrasound. I also learned that he is pretty conservative/traditional in his approach. I specifically had to ask about other treatments I had read about that may be better suited for my diagnosis. I didn't feel like he was up on the latest studies or open to alternative treatments (even ones that are commonly used by other clinics). These factors ultimately lead to us finding another doctor/clinic.

If personality is not important, and standard, by-the-book treatment is ok with you, Dr. Kallen is just fine. If you want more personalized care look elsewhere.

I was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve during my first appointment. Dr. Kallen told us that IVF would be our best option, but also said we could consider IUI - ultimately the decision was ours. We ultimately moved forward with IVF and did a pretty standard antagonist protocol - Gonal-F, Menopur and Cetrotide. I was considered a poor responder, and Dr. Kallen pushed more meds at the end of the cycle to try to produce adequately-sized follicles. We ended up with 5 eggs, 3 mature. All 3 fertilized but arrested growth on day 5 post-retrieval.

Medications were approximately $19,000 ($15k luckily covered by insurance). I think the medical procedures (monitoring appts, egg retrieval, fertilization/embryologist) were around $15,000 but pretty much all was covered by insurance so I'm not sure of the total.

Generally recommended single embryo transfer, though we never made it to that stage.

Caleb treated me as if I was money. Not a person. It upsets me because he don’t work around nor does he help with the situation. He basically makes you feel like your worthless. Thank god he won’t be my doctor anymore
