Attention to Detail
Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.
For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.
CDC Success Rates
This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr. Chang was warm and friendly in our initial consult, and I think she's a very smart and knowledgeable doctor. However, as complications arose with our treatment and we needed to speak with her, it was extremely difficult to get a hold of her. And when we did get a hold of her, I always felt like she was rushing to get off the phone or wrap up the appointment. We never felt like we had enough time to ask all of our questions.
This is a state of the art clinic [at Southern California Reproductive Center] with cutting edge technology. However, they seem to be overwhelmed with patients and badly understaffed. I often could not get a live person on the phone, and despite leaving multiple voicemails I often did not receive a call back...The nurses are sweet and well meaning, but they are spread too thin. They have a lot of patients and it was VERY difficult to get through to anyone or to receive a call back.

Dr Alexander is a great listener and also very practical with her advice. She is kind but doesn’t sugar-coat things which I appreciate ... She was very understanding about our desire to start gradually- first with Clomid and then moving to IUI. When the Clomid gave me vision side effects she was quick to correct course and try an alternative. When we miscarried she called and was very compassions and helped us remain positive. Her bedside manner during all of the IUI procedures has been amazing and so positive.

Once they forgot to call in my prescription, but I had some left over from a previous visit so it wasn’t a big deal.
When I had my consult with Dr Sundheimer I was very nervous. She really took the time with me to understand my results and what I should do to preserve my fertility. I had unexpected news that my reserve was low, and decided after talking with Dr Sundheimer to go forward with egg freezing. She always gave me updates throughout the entire process and made me feel very cared for. She was easy to talk to even with something that is so personal. She [Dr. Sundheimer] even retrieved a couple more [eggs] than anticipated. I was very happy about that...She always took the time to explain things to me in terms that I could understand...
The Torrance office [of Southern California Reproductive Center] is very personable...She [nurse] was very quick to get back to my questions (by both phone or email) or other needs. She was friendly at every visit and was easy to communicate with throughout this process. She gave me timely updates on what I would need to continue with my egg freezing cycle...Both Dr Sundheimer and her nurse take the time to get to know you and explain things in detail. I felt very comfortable at each visit and there was little to no wait time as well.

I felt as though the doctor [Dr. Mark Surrey] could have been more sensitive to setbacks when the first attempt at retrieval actually failed. My doctor that recommended him actually has a very sensitive demeanor so I was expecting more...He knows what he’s doing but isn’t very sensitive...I was a traumatic experience because the first cycle didn’t even work at all to make it to retrieval. I ended up with enough eventually but it was much more time consuming and costly than expected.
I felt as though the doctor and the [Southern California Reproductive Center] clinic as a whole could have been more sensitive to what the patient is actually going through. Describe the costs associated with your care under Mark Surrey at Southern California Reproductive Center.
This clinic is pretty expensive probably partly due to being located in beverly hills. I did not receive any assistance on the first cycle. The second cycle I received some assistance with medication as well as with the third. Other than that it was completely out of pocket.
Dr. Danzer was very warm and kind. What really stood out was his positive attitude. He kept saying things like “call me in two weeks with the positive pregnancy news!” “WHEN, not if you get pregnant.” I appreciated that. But I don’t feel he was aggressive enough or gave me enough options due to my age....There was a discrepancy with my vitamin D and I was told to take more. Then I was told by another doctor that I had a toxic level of vitamin D in my system.
The waiting room [Southern California Reproductive Center] is like a cattle call. I was also left in a room for 45 minutes after my first IUI after I was told someone would come get me. I finally got up, got dressed and walked out only to find all the lights were out and the whole office was having a staff meeting! And left me in a room for nearly an hour. I was very upset.

There was a discrepancy with my vitamin D and I was told to take more. Then I was told by another doctor that I had a toxic level of vitamin D in my system. They also left me in a room after an IUI and I saw myself out after nearly an hour, to find the office shut down for a staff meeting. When you’re scared and alone and feeling the most vulnerable, that was a horrible feeling to be forgotten.
She [Dr. Carolyn Alexander] is a brilliant doctor, incredibly smart. She is warm and kind. She is not always the best communicator because her mind is working at a mile a minute, but I appreciate very much her expertise. She also frequently sought the opinions of other colleagues, both in the clinic and outside. It wasn't about ego for her it was about doing the best possible thing...Dr. Alexander also successfully removed, or significantly reduced a large uterine septum I have. The first operation I had with another doctor had failed. Dr. Alexander did an excellent job.
It [Southern California Reproductive Center] is a very busy clinic, always full. That said, I never felt like a number, just that I was in a very busy office! The main thing is having to be on top of your own treatment and following up yourself when necessary...The main problem with the nursing staff is turnover, and so you don't have a consistent or ongoing relationship with one person. They often change, and also you get who you get, depending on who answers the phone or emails. But they are nice and helpful.

Dr Ghadir has a nice manner to him and seems really to care about his patients (without being too stiff or formal). He is very professional as well. He was thorough in his explanation of the process and attentive to all of our questions...Working with Dr Ghadir is great. The only downsides are the administrative features of SCRC -- phone calls not getting returned, billing not being transparent.
SCRC feels a bit like a factory. Often times I would call and get transferred around not being able to speak to a live human. The "third party coordinators" were a mixed bag -- some were very friendly and helpful, others came across as less enthusiastic and didn't follow up appropriately. I also felt the billing system lacked transparency -- expect to get credit card charges but with no accompanying statements. Felt a bit like a money making machine.

They have a third-party coordinator system. You email a mailbox or leave a message and usually within 24 hours someone will get back to you. Often the person who gets back to you is different from the one you spoke to before. I wish there would have been some consistency here.

Dr. Chang is a very good doctor. She listened and was willing to follow along with my ideas (unmedicated IUI). She was even open to a natural IVF with no drugs. How was your experience with Wendy Chang at Southern California Reproductive Center?
I had an overall good experience with Dr. Chang as a person. She is very nice and thorough in her evaluation. She actually caught a small issue with my thyroid and suggested that I take more iodine, prescribed Synthroid, and sent me to an endocrinologist for re-evaluation. I decided not to take Synthroid and took more iodine instead. In a few months, my TSH was much lower and it has remained steady for more than one year. I am grateful to Dr. Chang for that!
Dr. Chang performed an unmedicated IUI, which she did well. It did not work. She suggested a medicated IUI but I did not respond to the drugs so I cancelled the IUI. After that, I decided not to continue fertility treatments due to my age (I was 43).

Dr. Alexander followed my lead and was aggressive about my treatments. We first tried letrazole which I had negative reactions to. Dr. Alexander found a polyp in my uterus which I had surgically removed. Around the same time after doing a semen analysis for my husband she referred us to a Male Fertility Specialist who discovered that he had varicocele and needed surgery.
Southern California Reproductive Center is a high end Beverly Hills clinic that is very well maintained. Everything is state of the art yet they take insurance which makes it affordable!...There have been a couple of occurrences where the nurse forgot to call in a medication or didn't call it in as promptly as I would have hoped.
How was your experience with Carolyn Alexander at Southern California Reproductive Center?

Dr. Ghadir understands the stress of the journey. He is quick to make one feel calm and safe. ...he never made us feel like we didn't belong. We are two gay Dads. And, that was never an issue. I like how he told us, he enjoyed working with LGBT families...He was amazing. He never rushed us. He took time to explain, everything. He looked us in the eye. And, he was very positive. He never left an email unanswered. He never failed to return a call. He made us feel like we were the most important people at his work.

Dr. Alexander's confidence and expertise in the field of infertility put both my partner and me at ease when going through this uncertain, often scary process. She remembered us when we sought to get pregnant with baby number two and when we sent other couples to seek her help. She’s absolutely wonderful to work with...
[Southern California Reproductive Center] Very compassionate and knowledgeable. When I had questions, I usually receive a call back that day. It seemed as if each team member did their job and knew my file. I appreciated that. I did have an issue with miscommunication when calling the night line. I would have appreciated getting ahold of a live staff member since I was worried about a potential issue, but I medís get a call back the next day...

I trusted that Dr Shahin Ghadir well informed me of the reasons why eSET was always the best way to proceed. I’m glad I took his advice & trusted his decision.
All calls had to be routed through her [Dr. Akopians] staff. Even though fertility treatments are time-sensitive, she would not respect my time. I was routinely kept waiting for IUI procedures, which take less than 5 minutes to do. One time, I waited 2 hours past my scheduled IUI procedure report time. There was no explanation as to why that occurred. She seemed uninterested in taking the time to diagnose me or find out why the IUIs were not working (maybe due to her truancy). She tried to steer me to a different path, one that cost significantly more money, and was not attentive to my care.
When I had my IUI, she [the nurse at Southern California Reproductive Center] forgot to order the sperm be transferred to the lab, resulting in an hour and a half delay. She forgot to put in my prescription for progesterone to the pharmacy...Schedules and timing were missed or not communicated. I received conflicting information from my doctor which I think impacted my care and my results. The nursing staff is overwhelmed, overworked, rude, or all three. The likelihood of results was not explained to me, nor was I given any explanation as to what to expect. Statistics and percentages are skewed, perhaps with the intention of giving false hope.
How was your experience with Alin Lina Akopians at Southern California Reproductive Center?
She seemed focused on my age. We discussed IVF, but she did not want to proceed. When the IUIs did not work out, she did not adjust my treatment, she just kept recommending IUIs. When, at her suggestion, I decided to use donor eggs, only one usable embryo was obtained. Dr. Akopians was cavalier in her delivery and attitude. I asked her why a 25-year old donor was only producing 1 usable embryo, and she said, "Sometimes, that happens." Well, it shouldn't happen when you're charging $15,000 for an unusable egg lot. It also goes against everything she told me with regard to the link between maternal age and usable eggs. If a young woman is producing good-quality eggs, then we should have more than 1 usable embryo.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alin Lina Akopians at Southern California Reproductive Center?
Look for another doctor. She misrepresents data and does bot communicate with her patients in a timely, trustworthy, or direct manner.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alin Lina Akopians at Southern California Reproductive Center?
I could never get in touch with her. All calls had to be routed through her staff.

Describe the protocols Alin Lina Akopians used in your cycles at Southern California Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
I went to her to undergo IVF. She said that we could try. Even though I had a low ovarian reserve, she started me on birth control (I was told by another doctor this is the exact opposite course of treatment one would take for a woman with low ovarian reserve). No surprise, I only had 2 follicles grow when I started the medication. She then told me that she would not do the IVF because she needed at least 4 follicles to "make it worthwhile." We then opted to do IUI. She had me take FSH, which is unnecessary in a "natural" cycle, as you only need 1 good egg, not multiples. That did not work out, so she recommended I go with dobir eggs, which I did. I had to take out a loan to get the eggs, and chose a healthy, 25-year old female. The paperwork they have you sign indicates you are only guaranteed one blastocyst, not a euploid embryo, which means, in layman's terms, you'll get at least 1 embryo, not a chromosomally-normal embryo, not a usable embryo. Thus, you could get an entire egg lot with no usable embryos. She never explained this to me. I had to figure it out on my own. The healthy, 25-year old donor only produced 1 chromosomally-normal embryo. That means out of the 7 eggs, only 14% were normal, a far cry from what Dr. Akopians told me and no relevant nexus between the science and the results.
She then recommended an ERA, which added on $2,740 to the costs. An ERA has not been tested significantly, and has not been shown to yield higher success rates in pregnancy. I feel that Dr. Akopians is not motivated by her success in getting patients pregnant, but rather on how much money they will spend in doing so.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Southern California Reproductive Center. (Assigned nurse: Julia )
Julia is nice enough, but in addition to being nice, you also need to be competent. Sahar was the first nurse I dealt with, and she seemed to know what she was doing. Sahar left mysteriously, with no explanation given as to her absence. No one told me she left. When I called to schedule, I was told I would now be dealing with Julia. Julia forgets things. For instance, when I had bloidwork, she forgot to tell me I had to fast, so the phlebotomist was none too happy, and informed me that if the test came back abnormal, I'd have to do it again.
When I had my IUI, she forgot to order the sperm be transferred to the lab, resulting in an hour and a half delay. She forgot to put in my prescription for progesterone to the pharmacy. Progesterone is needed for a baby to grow.
Describe your experience with Southern California Reproductive Center.
SCRC is a hotbed of incompetence. The staff all seemed stressed or overwhelmed and you can never get a straight answer our of them. They tried to charge me for procedures when I had credits pending on my account. You have to remind them of everything. When you do remind them, they get defensive, and reply in a hostile manner. They don't give you updates on care or how long you'll be waiting. One particularly frustrated nurse informed me that they usually only have one nurse, one lab tech, and one receptionist handling patients for 5 doctors. With a skeleton crew, things are going to get missed. They're going to get overlooked. People are no longer people. They are just numbers.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alin Lina Akopians at Southern California Reproductive Center.
Strangely, even though my insurance provides for ultrasounds, they charged me for each and every one. Same goes for bloodwork. My insurance does not provide for fertility treatments, so I had to pay for that. IUIs were incorrectly charged. At one point, I was charged $345, another point, $270. Ironically, even though the IUIs are a medical procedure m, they cost less than the ultrasounds and bloodwork, which can be performed by any nurse.
Costs associated with donor egg and FET:
$15,000 for donor eggs (no guarantees)
$15,000 for egg thaw, insemination, testing, ERA, and FET.
Describe Alin Lina Akopians's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Southern California Reproductive Center.
For me, this was inapplicable, as I only had one usable embryo.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Southern California Reproductive Center.
As I mentioned before, this clinic is borderline incompetent. Schedules and timing were missed or not communicated.
[Dr. Mark Surrey] called me personally for every step. Good news, bad new and the hard news. He saw me almost every appointment in my first round...believes in genetic testing so that you can pick the best possible embryos...He is very compassionate and doesn’t treat you like just a number...I won’t stop IVF treatments until he tells me “that’s it”
The strengths [of Southern California Reproductive Center] are the technology they have. The Embryoscope, the genetic testing. The experienced doctors. They are a bit pricey but then again they are the best. They have offices everywhere which is nice and convenient. I enjoyed going to the Beverly Hills office though as it felt like home...[the nursing staff] responded always within the same day!

Since I have a unicornate uterus I can only transfer one embryo at a time. However dr surrey believes in genetic testing so that you can pick the best possible embryos
[Dr. Alin Lina Akopians] intentions are to truly help with the least amount of intervention possible. She will take the time to listen and answer all of your questions and make sure that you understand everything so don’t hesitate to ask questions...I never felt rushed and she was making sure that I understood everything we were discussing and answered all my questions. I felt so comfortable with her and was so impressed that she had reviewed everything. This definitely made my consultation very personal and individualized to my care.

How was your experience with Alin Lina Akopians at Southern California Reproductive Center?
Dr. Akopians is one of the warmest, compassionate, and honest doctors I have ever met. During my consultation, I immediately knew that she was the answer to our issues. She had such a great understanding of exactly what was going on. She explained to me what her plan was going to be, which was completely different than my past treatments. She was very quick to identify a few contributing factors that weren’t looked into in my past appointments with different fertility centers.
I felt refreshed, I was so comfortable and felt hopeful for the first time. She truly restored my hope into being able to use my own eggs (which is the opposite of what I was told by two other doctors). I was so nervous and anxious that she would say the same thing- luckily that was not the case. As if the emotional distress wasn't enough, the financial distress of having to use donor eggs was just not some thing my husband and I were prepared for at 32 years of age.
She looked me in the eyes and told me she was going to try and get me pregnant naturally! I was shocked. A few weeks ago we were getting ready to clean out our savings account while I was trying to come to terms with having to use a donor egg.
Her intelligence made me trust her. I knew her protocol was not financially driven. This was a HUGE relief for me.
I had my evaluation the same day. She called me next day with all my results and we confirmed our protocol as it was apparent I was close to ovulation. Her nurse emailed me everything in writing after our call and fast forward to 2 weeks later, I’M PREGNANT !!!!
I honestly couldn’t believe it. Still in shock. I can’t imagine if it wasn’t for Dr. Akopians I would be in the process of choosing donor eggs. I can’t believe she was able to make this miracle happen for us with such minimal intervention And monitoring!!

Dr. Akopians was extremely patient with me. I had MANY questions since I had already seen one doctor before her. She put me at ease and answered everything with no rushing me...She is very real and honest. I appreciate a doctor who doesn’t try to make everything seem perfect...We tried 2 IUIs with Clomid. I responded well, but no pregnancy...I felt secure that she was treating me individually, rather than prescribing a protocol that’s “generic” for everyone. This was tailored to ME. I felt very cared for.
Julia was a wonderful nurse [SCRC]. She kept me informed of how I was doing with my stim cycle. She called me every time I came in to give me instructions and make my next appointment...Front desk - stellar Billing - could use a bit better communication, but they were all very nice. I dealt with Jocelyn and Erika...The ultrasound tech, Neha and Diane were SO good to me. Very gentle and took their time.
How was your experience with Alin Lina Akopians at Southern California Reproductive Center?
She is very real and honest. I appreciate a doctor who doesn’t try to make everything seem perfect. I came to the fertility clinic for a reason. I want to know what to do and how I can get to the point of holding my healthy baby in my arms.

Make sure to be on time. Because it’s courteous. She’s a busy doctor. She respected my time, so I try to do the same.

Describe the protocols Alin Lina Akopians used in your cycles at Southern California Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
We tried 2 IUIs with Clomid. I responded well, but no pregnancy. I was ready to move ahead with IVF. We had an entire new phone talk about IVF and the success rates (SCRC has the best success rates), the hormones and side effects, the length of treatment, and potential outcomes.
It was all very thorough. And I felt secure that she was treating me individually, rather than prescribing a protocol that’s “generic” for everyone. This was tailored to ME. I felt very cared for.

Julia was a wonderful nurse. She kept me informed of how I was doing with my stim cycle. She called me every time I came in to give me instructions and make my next appointment. She has a Southern accent. You can’t miss her! She’s lovely and very kind.
Describe your experience with Southern California Reproductive Center.
Front desk - stellar
Billing - could use a bit better communication, but they were all very nice. I dealt with Jocelyn and Erika.
Waiting room - social distancing and Covid screening causes a bit of a wait, but it’s understandable.
The ultrasound tech, Neha and Diane were SO good to me. Very gentle and took their time.

Describe Alin Lina Akopians's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Southern California Reproductive Center.
She said we can discuss when we get to that point. I’m probably aiming to transfer 2 embryos....if she would be willing. I will do what she recommends.
We met Dr. Alexander in our first consultation, saw her for our IUI, and that’s it...she seemed hard to reach...don’t think it’s Dr. Alexander’s fault, she was very kind, but I do think they treat too many patients at once and are overwhelmed...She didn’t run any CD3 labs, she just went forward. At the time I was 28 without any diagnosis
[Southern California Reproductive Center] office was SO busy and we barely saw or spoke to our doctor. It felt very ‘one size fits all,’ with very little testing...mostly interacted with the nurses via email and phone calls...were all kind and easy to reach as needed, but would take a bit to respond
How was your experience with Carolyn Alexander at Southern California Reproductive Center?
We met Dr. Alexander in our first consultation, saw her for our IUI, and that’s it. Unfortunately she seemed hard to reach, we spoke mostly to her nurses and front desk team. I don’t think it’s Dr. Alexander’s fault, she was very kind, but I do think they treat too many patients at once and are overwhelmed.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Carolyn Alexander at Southern California Reproductive Center?
Prepare to wait awhile and don’t expect much communication.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Carolyn Alexander at Southern California Reproductive Center?
The office was SO busy and we barely saw or spoke to our doctor. It felt very ‘one size fits all,’ with very little testing.
Describe the protocols Carolyn Alexander used in your cycles at Southern California Reproductive Center and their degree of success.
We had tried oral medication with our OB before coming to see Dr. Alexander. She started us on injectables almost mid cycle, which is something my current doctor wouldn’t do. She didn’t run any CD3 labs, she just went forward. At the time I was 28 without any diagnosis, to me it feels very aggressive. I also didn’t realize how awful the injectables would make me feel. Unfortunately that cycle resulted in a negative test. Our next cycle, she wanted to do oral medication with an IUI, which we tried, and it resulted in a negative. It just felt very all over the place with little reasoning. At the time, I just trusted what the doctors wanted to do and didn’t do much research on my own, and didn’t question protocol.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Southern California Reproductive Center.
We mostly interacted with the nurses via email and phone calls. They were all kind and easy to reach as needed, but would take a bit to respond which was fine. We didn’t need a ton of hand holding.
Describe your experience with Southern California Reproductive Center.
The clinic is busy, there are a lot of doctors and a lot of patients. I think for IVF it may be a better clinic, but if you’re exploring IUI ask questions and prepare to be your own advocate. The front desk team is fine, we were cash paying, so didn’t have any billing issues.
What specific things went wrong at Southern California Reproductive Center?
Dr. Surrey did a focused consultation and explored every possibility of why we were not getting pregnant before starting an egg transfer...did the procedure that cleaned out this blockage. And then healed prior to starting the cycle where we implanted...one of the kindest and most patient medical professionals
SCRC feels like a very busy place...very high volume facility and it can feel crowded...incredibly on their game. We never waited too long. Labs were a breeze...parking is too expensive so park in the free lot around the corner...Olivia and her staff always valued our time. They were efficient like no other staff we had ever seen
