Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

She [Dr. Valerie Shavell] has been nice, kind and answered questions. She explained things nicely but blunt. I felt she could of been a little more compassionate and give more information at our second appointment...So far we have done one round of Clomid monitored, one round not, hoping to do another. I believe it was a basic fertility treatment and she told us IVF was not an option due to my age...I feel a little like based on my age she used a standard protocol with little to basic testing...I hope in the future they expand more options and ideas for women in their 40’s. For a new patient the first appointment is overwhelming! You will walk out on overload.
The nursing staff [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] has been amazing, compassionate, always kind when I feel I have a stupid question, give explanation and make sure I am okay with what’s going on...The overall staff is very pleasant, the clinic is clean and comfortable. I hope in the future they expand more options and ideas for women in their 40’s. For a new patient the first appointment is overwhelming! You will walk out on overload. There were many appointments where I’d wait to speak with the doctor [Dr. William Dodds] and then the nurses would dismiss me because they were backed up or too busy. I talked to the nurses all the time and I’d wish I could’ve asked the Doctor more questions regarding my treatments and the results...I saw all of the Doctors there. Dodds seemed to be the most experienced with all of the challenges that arose during my journey. I also saw Dr Thakur and really appreciated the fact that she took her time with me to answer any questions and side effects that I could expect.
Some [nurses at The Fertility Center of Michigan] were very knowledgeable and helpful when I’d have questions and others would contradict themselves when deciding on the course of my treatments...There were multiple times when I’d go in for blood work and the nurses assured me they ordered them in the system. When I’d go to the labs and they weren’t showing them I’d have to call the clinic and or return to a different lab at a later time because of an error on their end

Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Over all most of the people there were friendly and knowledgeable. I am not impressed either Robin and a few others in the billing department. They gave me the runaround about a few of my claims that were covered by my insurance and they still charged me out of pocket. When I called them multiple times to follow up they were not professional in getting back to me and helping to get the fees reversed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Unfortunately most of our costs were all out of pocket

12 rounds of Femara, 4 iui [protocol with Dr. Shavell]. Got pregnant on the 2nd iui but miscarried. Taking a break of the next round doesn’t work and then switching to injectables... is very nice but I feel that i am treated as a number. I only see or hear from her when I specifically request an appointment and I find myself having to remind her of things that she should already know...Conflicting information is my biggest complaint. It’s almost as if nurses and doctors don’t communicate. I’ve had them drop the ball several times related to my thyroid treatment and I’ve had to question advice they’ve given. It’s hard for me to trust what they are saying.
I have to re explain my situation every time I am at the fertility center [of Michigan]. There is no consistent treatment...A complete lack of communication and they clearly don’t look at files before talking to you. I’ve have had to re explain my miscarriage what feels like 1000 times. She [Dr. Valerie Shavell] is very kind but a little passive. I would have prefered a more aggressive treatment early on. I also wish I had seen her more frequently during my recently cancelled cycle. She is a good communicator and when I dis meet with her she explained everything thoroughly.... We tried 2 IUI's which were unsuccessful. Our recent IvF was cancelled after 10 days due to low follicle production. My injections have been adjusted for next time but I wonder if something could have been done earlier to get better results.
Overall, they [the nurses at the Fertility Center of Michigan-Grand Rapids] have been fine. It can be difficult to get them on the phone at times and when I asked for the new protocol for meds to be described they said it wasn't necessary at that time which I found frustrating.... In the end you will meet with all the doctors when it matters, so don't wait for her. Just get in there and get the process started.

The first was very casual with rock star pictures all over his office. There was also lots of toys and stuffed animals. It was weird. The second just didn't seem very compassionate. We only saw them both once and decided to wait.

So far we have spent 13,000 which included a prepayment for our upcoming IVF
Describe Valerie Shavell's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
She prefers single but with our chances so slim I think she should be more aggressive if the patient is willing.

He [Dr. William Dodds] is honest and caring, good bedside manner and very intelligent. Although he can be a bit flighty at times with this thought processes, we wouldn't have wanted anyone else there. Sometimes he was too caring than informative and other times he was too informative without much care. Really depended on the day.
The billing department [at Fertility Center of MI-Grand Rapids] is totally unorganized and a joke; keep all your receipts and don't let any stone go unturned. They demand money immediately well before procedures even happen, makes them come across as money hungry. Front desk staff are cordial, but if you ever have an urgent need, no one wants or knows how to help you and you just get transferred around.

Paperwork is often lost, billing department is totally unorganized. I ran out of meds when they wanted me to keep stimming, and my pharmacy was in the middle of a snow storm. When I called the office freaking out they basically said they don't keep meds on hand and "good luck".

Dr. Shavell had very good bedside manner, and always made me feel that she really cared. She's very compassionate and understanding. She's also very flexible with my needs. when I asked if we could do an endometriosis laparoscopy instead of trying another cycle she allowed it. She really let me feel that I was in control of my own treatment and that she was there to help.
It is a great Clinic [The Fertility Center of MI-Grand Rapids] with great staff. It is in a very nice location. The clinic is very clean and welcoming. All the staff are very friendly and compassionate. They even offer you drinks when you are in the waiting room.... the nursing staff was great! They always were great about answering my questions when I called and getting any problem that I had solved.

We began with testing, and got this down right away, it was such a quick process which I appreciated. We started on meds and US monitoring right away. I was given a calendar to break things down. Each month was basically the same-meds, ultrasound and then IUI. Some times the meds didn’t work so then the dosage was changed for next month

Respectful, honest, and open. [Dr. Young] Answered all my questions. ... Wrote notes out for me, assisted me in coming up with the best plan. Gave me assurance when I had crazy questions and explained things to me in a way I could understand. Was real about my situation, allowed me to do things in my own timeline. Was available by phone. ... Glad I transferred 2 embryos. With the cost and my age. ...
More access to clinic [The Fertility Center of Michigan] by phone or email. Some of the treatment is time sensitive. Once I ran out of progesterone shots and some things were not early explained in advance by nurse staff. Just making sure Ivf prtocal is very well explained including pharmacy and injection information ... Nursing staff did not call in prescriptions timely on multiple occasions ...All the docs at the clinic I saw treated me kindly and with respect.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Stay positive. Trust the process!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
All the docs at the clinic I saw treated me kindly and with respect. This process was confusing and heartbreaking and I wouldn’t be pregnant with twins right now without these physicians. I support and respect all 4 of them.
Describe the protocols James Young (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
Started with blood testing, hormones, etc, semen analysis. Moved in to fertility drugs, moved in to iuis, moved in to hsg and sono, removes uterine polyps and proceeded with one last iui before moving in to Ivf. Ivf was very successful for me. Currently 8 months pregnant with boy/girl
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Most were compassionate and sometimes they wouldn’t answer or call back right away. Ivf nurses were better
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
More access to clinic by phone or email. Some of the treatment is time sensitive. Once I ran out of progesterone shots and some things were not early explained in advance by nurse staff. Just making sure Ivf prtocal is very well explained including pharmacy and injection information

Dr. Dodd’s was extremely understanding and was very patient driven during our consultation. He gave us a game plan and we got started on everything right away. I am very pleased thus far with Dr Dodds. ... He uses all medical history to make informed decisions and orders any extra tests as needed. He comes up with a plan based on your testing and results and is willing to be as aggressive as you want to be. I feel very supported by him and his team.
Strengths: top of the line resources, a variety of doctors, clean and large facility [The Fertility Center of Michigan], good location, great staff Weakness: their phone hours are only 8-3 so it is difficult to get a hold of them during work hours. They always return calls but you may play phone tag as they do not always answer calls. ... Nurses go in detail of what to do next in your treatment plan and are willing to teach and answer all questions.

Overall, I feel Dr Shavell is very knowledgeable and compassionate toward her patients. She was very empathetic when I was experiencing my miscarriage. However, some appointments with her felt rushed at times. She did ask though if I had any questions at the end of appointments...Treatment strategies I used with Dr. Shavell include Femara and some cycles with Ovidrel added also. I originally began Femara at the 5 mg dosage and based on the number of follicles I was producing, she asked if I would like to increase my dosage up to 7.5mg. I did that and it did increase the number of follicles I produced.
Some nurses [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] were very sympathetic when I was going through my miscarriage. However, there were others that weren't as compassionate about the situation. Overall, it can be tough to get ahold of the nursing staff and receive a call back from them in a timely manner...Appointments seem to usually be running on time and they usually have appointment opening on the day I call or the next day. Their offices are nice and clean but the locations aren't the most convenient...Occasionally, I would have to call them in order to get bloodwork results. Some nurses weren't always able to interpret the results and give me information on precisely what my results were indicating.

Occasionally we felt as though Dr. Dodd's had a general statement he said to everyone, didn't feel too individualized. But that doesn't factor into how he provides care....Lupron flare protocol is what worked best for good embryos for me and resulted in pregnancy each time. I also used human growth hormone the second cycle and believe it worked very well for my diagnosis of diminished ovarian reserve/poor responde
Having two insurances has always been confusing for the billing department here [at The Fertility Center]. I feel like I have to constantly remind them to bill the second insurance. Other times I would get a bill for balance after one insurance company was billed but before the second one could respond for payment or non payment.

Dr. Young was great, he didn’t sugar coat anything, and gave us options without making us “spend money”. He was very personable, and easy to follow. Great doctor!... He described our scenario to us, using drawings to better describe and understand. While using others as examples, and what we could or should do with all of our options.... The whole team at the Fertility Center were fantastic. We always felt welcomed, and not just another number. Clean, and organized, as with well put together rooms. From the waiting room, to the clinician rooms, everything was well put together.

From the waiting room, to the clinician rooms, everything was well put together.... I wish there would have been more options for financial help/care. You paid before you left, and could not be billed. Cost were a average with other clinics.... Most of the nurses were warm, knowledgeable and helpful.

Dr. Young was very thorough with telling us our options and the risks and chances we had with conception. He always seemed up-to-date with the technology and techniques. He was warm and helpful to both me and my husband ... He was very personable and we felt like we were the most important patient when were sitting in front of him. ... At first he seems to be very serious and to the point, but he warms up the more you see him.
They [The Fertility Center of Michigan] don't make you wait in the waiting room for too long. .... They were all compassionate and knew that it was a tough time for us. They explained everything in detail. They were very professional. ... The only problem I had was a patient and her husband had their 2 year old with them and they stood in the waiting room looking at new ultrasound pictures showing a pregnancy. ... While it wasn't the fault of the clinic totally, I wish they did something to either keep it away from patients who are sensitive or remind the patients that there are still sensitive patients.

Dr. Young was so easy to talk to. He was understanding, and right to the point. Just what we needed.... Although we didn’t see him on every visit, he was very good at consulting us when needed, and setting a good plan. He explained all options and left us with our choice, and opinion on how to proceed.... After 5 IUI attempts, with clomid we then tried injections. After 2 rounds we decided (Dr. Young) that IVF would be our next option.
Very clean, organized and friendly. They [Fertility Ctr of Michigan] seemed to be a little overwhelmed with how busy the office was. We didn’t feel like just a number, but here were a lot of people in and out, and they didn’t remember our names, or anything . But understandable with their amount of people and clients.... Like most facilities, fertility treatments are expensive. They were open to the cost, and posted this prior to visits.

[Dr Young possess an] absolutely great bedside manner and a wonderful doctor. He made me feel optimistic and well cared for. I would fly across the country to see him. I had a cyst aspirated twice, removed once, went through one failed IUI and one successful IVF. Dr Young was our primary Doctor but we also interacted with Dr Dodds. I even got lab results from the doctor at 9 pm one weeknight. I felt valued as a patient and made to feel like a priority....
The Fertility Center [of Michigan] as a whole was amazing. Every person we encountered was polite, respectful and helpful. Receptionists, nurses, doctors and lab staff greeted us by name, never made us feel rushed and wanted to make sure we understood exactly what was happening and (if possible) why....Whenever I called with a question (billing or medical) my called was returned that same day, usually within an hour or two. The doctors and nurses also made sure to tell us about the free counseling they provide for their patients and the support groups they host. My husband and I felt well taken care of there and they made this whole experience a little better.

I had a great experience with her[Dr. Valerie Shavell], my only complaint would be that her and my personalities are a little different. I prefer all the nitty gritty details, and like it shot to me straight. She tends to be more soft spoken and kind, which is amazing, but sometimes I just want someone to tell me how it is, real talk...We tried Chlomid for my husbands MFI. Did one IUI and then discovered his count was 100k washed so IVF would be better.
I was very impressed with their [Fertility Center of Michigan nurse] preparation for discussions with me. They were timely and kind...Everyone I came into contact with was kind and caring. Everyone was very knowledgeable and they want to do their best to help in the best way possible. Only complaint would be that I always want to know WHY something is being done, and how and why not this way and what to expect in nitty gritty detail and sometimes things were a little vague.

I was very impressed with their preparation for discussions with me. They were timely and kind.
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
No complaints. They handled everything very well. Everyone I came into contact with was kind and caring. Everyone was very knowledgeable and they want to do their best to help in the best way possible. Only complaint would be that I always want to know WHY something is being done, and how and why not this way and what to expect in nitty gritty detail and sometimes things were a little vague.

[Dr. Young] was very calm, patient, and reassuring when he explained our options and how we would proceed through our plan. He took time to draw diagrams of our plan. He asked questions of us in order to get to know us outside of our treatment...I have PCOS. We began by doing 2 cycles of trying on our own treated with Femara, gonal-f, ovidrel, and progesterone. Next, we did a cycle of IUI using those same medications....
[The Fertility Center of Michigan] is very clean and welcoming. The waiting area is relaxed. All of the staff I've seen have been polite and helpful...The nurses are very helpful and responsive. You always receive a call back the same day...They forgot to order a lab, but it was corrected the same day...Approx $600 for an IUI..I have PCOS. We began by doing 2 cycles of trying on our own treated with Femara, gonal-f, ovidrel, and progesterone. Next, we did a cycle of IUI using those same medications.

Dr Young was very genuine and made me feel like he cared about us... is very quiet but compassionate and caring. He called me after our second transfer didn't work just to see how I was doing and if I had any questions. He always asked us if we had any questions, shook our hands at the end and made us feel like he cared about what was going on with us...Just be aware he is flat affected so if you're expecting an upbeat personality, you won't get that from him. It's not that he doesn't care, it's just not his personality
We love Libby [nurse at The Fertility Center of Michigan]! She was always upbeat but compassionate when things didn't go our way. She always had answers for us and always wished us well. She also never made me feel guilty for calling with a question...For egg retrieval, medications and 3 transfers, it was over $22,000...Strengths: They treat you really well when you're doing IVF Weaknesses: When asked what I needed to do differently according to diet, exercise, etc. They said nothing when other clinics would give me a list of things to do to help our chances.

Extremely kind and soft spoken, but not aggressive enough treatment plan or enough diagnostic testing was done to maximize success or truly understand the issues. We felt empathy from her [Dr. Shavell] , but didn't feel like we were taken seriously enough with our issues to help us achieve starting our family...Never saw her during my treatments - not enough testing done just unexplained
Billing - they [Fertility Center of Michigan] only except a small number of insurance programs which is very challenging so for us everything is out of pocket. I don't feel they do anything or share what they do to help advocate with government agencies to help fight for fertility coverage or anything proactive to help support our cause. They treat it like a true for profit business not a doctors office.

I always felt extremely comfortable with Dr.Dodds and trusted him with decisions going forward with my treatments. From the second I met with Dr. Shavell she made me feel like everything was going to be okay! ... I knew from the beginning that that Dr. Shavell was a perfect fit for us. We had just experienced our first early miscarriage when we had our appointment. She was so comforting and kind. Dr. Shavell wasted to time on start treatment, and getting a plan in place which we loved!
The Fertility center is a great welcoming place! I knew from the moment I walk in I was in the right place. All the staff are friendly and kind. My only disappoint is that they don't do appointment reminder calls (or I havent received any). You will not be disappointed in choosing TFC as your fertility specialist. ... I was scheduled for an Sonohysterogram (which was normal), and started letrozole 5mg cycle day 3-7. I go in on CD11 for a midcycle ultrasound. Test with OPK twice a day starting CD10. Have intercourse every other day start CD8 until I have a positive opk then have intercourse that day, the next skip one day then once again. Wait two weeks test then repeat if needed. We are currently on our 2nd letrozole cycle.

She [Dr. Valerie Shavell] is very compassionate, answers all questions, and made sure we were comfortable with the plan. She ordered tests to try to find a cause for my recurrent miscarriage, but we didn’t find anything. I do wish she would’ve done further testing.... Femara followed by an ultrasound to monitor follicles and Ovidrel to stimulate ovulation. She added Estradiol due to thin lining and Crinone after ovulation. I did get pregnant that cycle but unfortunately miscarried.
They [the nursing staff at The Fertility Center] were very helpful and called promptly with results.... I did not find Dr. Dodds to be at all compassionate or professional. We had a very poor experience with him following our fourth loss. It also seems there is a lack of communication among nursing staff regarding change of plans.... We used oral medications with timed intercourse and insurance covered most of the cost but do not cover IVF.

We got the HSG test performed, a Semen analysis for my husband, as well as other hormone testing (LH, FSH, Thyroid, Costisol.) Once all the tests were negative we started with the cycle #1 [with Dr.William Dodds]. Back at my first appointment we did a round of Provera+Clomid, which was unsuccessful so we skipped that during the next round and went right to Menopur...I am working with him remotely, so I saw him via Skype. He was very informative and supportive to both my husband and I during our initial consultation. He answered all our questions and described our options very well (I'm a nurse so have a good amount of education on the process, but my husband however does not!) The whole team that works with Dr.Dodds has been phenomenal!
[The staff at The Fertility Center of Michigan are] Great Communicators. Very supportive team: Nurses, Doctors, etc. I am working with the team remotely (Living in Traverse City, they have a remote office from their Grand Rapids location.) This has been a lifesaver! I work full time, so going through fertility treatment if I had to commute to Grand Rapids multiple times a week would be near impossible. I have loved working with them, along with the staff at Grand Traverse Womens Clinic!

[Dr. Thakur is] Very passionate about what she does. We felt comfortable and for the first time like we had a plan. We anticipated she would oversee us while nurses helped with day-to-day, and that’s what it’s been...We’ve just started, .5 of letrozole with a trigger shot for IUI-but my follicles we’re not growing on my CD12 scan (under 8 mm), so we cancelled. I also had my tube cleared via HSG...She was down to earth, logical, and to the point-but also funny and tender. She gave us the facts but also her own hope and what she can do with our situation.
Right now, we’ve spent $1200 leading up to IUI (all the prep work) [at The Fertility Center of Michigan - Grand Rapids]...It’s the only one here, but it is very good. I like the attention to detail, to mental health, and compassionate attitude in every step of the process. I love the LGBTQ community they serve, it’s evident they are judgement free...They [nurses] know who I am when I walk in. Always talking through what we’re going to do-incredibly compassionate and understanding. They even have a therapist on staff and a monthly support group.
