Attention to Detail

Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I had asked if we could do IVF with my eggs, but she [Dr. Mili Thakur] said she strongly suggests not - because I had such a low reserve and a genetic issue as well. We have not started the egg donor process yet, but will be starting soon!...She took the time to explain our genetic issues with us and also how it may impact our family...She is sympathetic and explains things very well. She is very knowledgeable in the subject - especially genetics which was helpful to our situation. It is hard to hear that we will never have biological children, but she told us in a way that we appreciated. She gave us the facts while still showing empathy.
We have not started the egg donor process [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] yet, but will be starting soon!...The nursing staff is engaging and professional. There was one nurse that I met with that clearly did not read my charts before I came in and that was a bit frustrating. She was asking me when my last period was ( I do not have a period and that would have been in my file) and when I told her that I do not have one, she was asking me questions as to why. I found this unnecessary as they have all that info already.

As I am sure the case with all doctors, come with questions!

Professional setting with great resources! I enjoy the services that they offer such as free counseling and genetic counseling. These two services were very helpful to my husband and I. It is a tough journey to navigate through.

Dr. Dodds is amazing. He always takes his time, looks you in the eyes, and treats you like a person. ... Dr. Dodds was so very empathetic and understanding of how stressful and unexpected it all was. He went over everything thoroughly and made sure I didn’t have any questions. He was unable to do my retrieval but he went through the trouble to call me that evening after the procedure.
All of the staff at The Fertility Center are downright amazing. Every person that I interacted with treated me as a person, with compassion and empathy. Everyone went out of their way to help however they could. I have trouble getting my blood drawn and typically need to lay down so I don’t have a panic attack. Everyday, my nurse would let me lay down on the bed and bring the supplies to me.
How was your experience with William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Dr. Dodds was amazing from our initial consultation to every visit in between. We found that we had to do IVF 6 weeks before my wedding, as I had a large ovarian tumor that needed to be removed. Dr. Dodds was so very empathetic and understanding of how stressful and unexpected it all was. He went over everything thoroughly and made sure I didn’t have any questions. He was unable to do my retrieval but he went through the trouble to call me that evening after the procedure.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
I would tell prospective patients to be honest with Dr. Dodds about your hopes. Dr. Dodds is so understanding and wants to help you achieve your goals.

Dr. Dodds always went above and beyond. He called me later in the day after surgery and the next day to make sure I was doing okay. After an IUI he would sit in the room and tell stories to help pass the 20 minute time that you had to wait to get up. He always went the extra step to make you feel important...used clomid, femara, gonal-f, and ovidrel in my treatment as well as IUI. I also had a laparoscopy to clear out endometriosis. After the laparoscopy I was able to get pregnant with a round of femara, gonal-f, ovidrel, and IUI.
[The Fertility Center of Michigan] is a very welcoming environment. You definitely feel like everyone there cares about you and helping you to have a baby. It is nice to be in a place where everyone is experiencing struggles just like you...The nursing staff is so helpful and understanding! They are willing to discuss any concern you have and always want to make sure you completely understand or are rid of your worry before ending an appointment or phone call.
How was your experience with William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?

When I was receiving IUIs I know the procedure itself was $500. I do believe the cost has gone up since then.

She [Dr. Thakur] was very good at answering any of my questions, making sure I did not have any other concerns & making sure all instructions were clear...She gave good advice about what kind of diet would be helpful, changes in lifestyle and habits, and new medicines to try. She even encouraged me to read a few different books.
I wish that the ultrasound techs [at Fertility Center of Michigan] would immediately ask if you had any allergies to latex or other products before just gathering their supplies. The staff was great at responding to online messages, however getting ahold of them on the phone was always very difficult...Nursing staff was always compassionate, and friendly. They were great about making sure to ask if I was In pain at any time and making sure I was Always as comfortable as possible.
How was your experience with Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Because of the pandemic, it was hard to see her in person. However we did do video consults and over the phone conversations. Whenever I messaged the doctors office if I had a concern, I would Receive a phone call follow up the same day with the doctor to help explain everything!

Clinic staff lost some of our signed paperwork of my husband, which they did later find. However if they didn’t find it, it would have put a holt to our treatment that month.

She [Dr. Miki Thakur] explained everything thoroughly about the iui and called me at home the following day (after the procedure) to see how I was doing and if I had any questions or concerns...I felt like she cared about my thoughts and feelings on the issues I was facing. When it was clear I would need to do ivf, she didn’t push the issue and respected my decision on doing the iui first. We discussed a treatment plan and told me to call the office if I ever had any questions or worries
Their strengths [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] is definitely their staff. From check in to check out everyone was always warm, caring, and friendly. They were always willing to answer questions and never was short with me or acted like I wear irritating them with any of my questions. A weakness is sometimes they are so busy that I’ve gotten in way past my appointment time...They [nurses] answered my questions and addressed any concerns I had. In addition they made a point to make sure I was comfortable and understood my treatment.

There was no preferred [number for] embryo transfer [by Dr. William Dodds]. We lost one during thaw so we had to thaw more and was told they most likely wouldn’t make it through so we transferred 2...He was super understanding and explained every issue as it became known. I always looked forward to seeing him and working with him. He wasn’t able to do it all which I understand. He worked with us on payments and helped us even when things were frustrating, new and confusing.
The clinic [The Fertility Center of Michigan] is very busy so you must have a very flexible schedule to fit into appointments when needed...Everyone seemed super helpful...We did a multi cycle retrieval due to low egg quality. Lots of high and aggressive dosage...Julie [nurse] and i didn’t get along well. Sometimes I would feel overwhelmed and frustrated and she didn’t seem to care. Other nurses I encountered were amazing.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Though because of my pcos diagnosis we knew ivf was likely the route we’d have to go Dr Dodd’s was thorough and made sure to check over me and my husband as well. Rather than assume my husband was fine due to a child from a prior relationship he had my husband tested and we found his count to be very low. I am glad this was tested early.... He never feels rushed or bothered by my questions
They [The Fertility Center of Michigan] know what they are doing because this is all they do. This requires questions as needed. But they are very helpful. The phone he’s could be better for non-ivf patients. While they have satellite offices IVF is only done at the Grand Rapids location... A prescription and procedure was ordered but we were not ready to move forward with ivf yet.
How was your experience with William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
I like how experienced he is. The down side of that is that while HE knows what he’s talking about and the plan the patient can be left with a lot of questions- but he is always willing to answer them :)

We ran intona couple roadblocks on our way to the IUI, and Dr. Dodds called us personally to make sure we felt supported as we navigated the roadblock. He spoke to us in a friendly manner, and we really felt he was trying to connect with us. ... He talked us through the procedure and the process of picking a donor. He was open to us using a donor known to us but explained the difficulties of that route in plain terms. His advice helped us decide what route to take. He empathized with us when we had a setback, and he always made us feel comfortable
A comfortable setting, nice staff [at The Fertility Center of Michigan], they're wonderful at keeping things private, everyone seems to be rooting for you and for success in your procedures. The doctors work well with communicating with each other if something is not their specialty, just wonderful people! ... The costs were what we expected, and were explained to us in detail. ...

Dr shavell was wonderful and understood what we were going through. She was always willing to talk to us about us situation and never rushed through anything...Dr shavell discovered I had pcos so she put me on metformin.... But I kept miscarrying each transfer so we checked my thyroid and I was elevated so we started medication for that... She was always willing to talk to us about us situation and never rushed through anything
I feel they [Fertility Center of MI - nurses] didn’t have as much compassion as the doctors did.... The one thing that was tough was when you had a miscarriage and wanted to try again right away you had to wait to get on the list for the month. Sometimes it was full and they would say you should have signed up sooner-like I knew I was going to miscarry... Dr shavell was wonderful and understood what we were going through.
How was your experience with Valerie Shavell at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
I always felt very comfortable while working with her. She always put you at ease with all the things you had to go through as a patient. I was always the one that came with a million questions and she never made me feel rushed or just another patient to her

Dr. [Shavell] was very professional, but not very personable. I’m sure it is not fun giving your patients potentially bad news. To me though she seemed unsympathetic . Having worked in the care field for close to thirty years I would have liked to have felt more concern and compassion for what we were feeling and going through.... First we tried a cycle of IVI then we were doing shots and monitoring eggs and having timed intercourse
Everyone [at Fertility Center of Michigan] you came in contact with was friendly and made you feel welcome from the first person you saw when you walked in, to the last person as you were leaving. [Dr. James Young] is very patient but also straight forward and factual. I never feel confused when he is talking about treatment and what could come next...Although we are still not pregnant, dr young has been very clear each visit on what might come next, leaving no surprises for us. We love that he is very “to the point”. We have no doubt that he is setting our treatment plan in our best interest. Hoping we see a miracle soon...

Like any patient going through infertility I would encourage they come with a set of questions for their doctor! It can all be very confusing and you want the answers while you’re able to speak with them versus when you’re at home with no one to answer the questions

He [Dr. James Young] is a very kind hearted person that my husband and i can talk to without feeling lots of grief when all we have in our mind is why? Why isn't anything working for us. He has went through many options with us to try and find some answers for us in our journey...When we would have appointments he would draw things out and explain word for word what we would expect and things he recommended we try...
the billing staff [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] along with dr. young has worked with me with my insurance to get some things covered as we know not a lot of fertility is covered. The staff has also given me a couple numbers for medications so im not paying hundreds of dollars on one month of something. They have been very easy with taking payments on things...Its very homey and you just feel very comfortable. There is a lot of privacy in all the rooms so you dont feel awkward. I like where its at because when you walk in you know everyone is there for the same thing.
How was your experience with James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
When we would have appointments he would draw things out and explain word for word what we would expect and things he recommended we try. He knew that we did want to spend a lot of money because things are expansive so he told us different options to try first before jumping into spending thousands of dollars. He looked out for the best interest of my husband and myself. He knew our struggle as we had a miscarriage before all the fertilty treatments. He knows how bad we want to be parents and is trying to get that to happen and find the outcome as he knows it can happen.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Listen to him, he knows what hes talking about. He is not just your doctor. Hes a ear that will listen to you and give you advice and make sure its what YOU want for yourself. He wants to give eveyone the wish of becoming a parent.

Describe the protocols James Young (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
When we met with Dr. Young we first went over everything that he needed to know we had been trying to conceive for a year. I was referred by my family doctor to him. We explained how we had a miscarriage 2 years prior to coming here. He went over different things and treaments for us. We decided to start on femara. That wasn't working so he suggested i do a HSG. We did that it came back that my one tube was clear and good. The other one they couldn't see at all. The doctor didnt know if i had one or if it was there but inflamed as i had a person training and i tensed up. I was on the femera for quite awhile so he then put me on clomid in addition to injections. That still wasnt working so he upped ny dose. My husband then was tested and it showed he motility was low. So he then had us do a iui along with my injections and clomid throughout the whole time being at the fertilty clinic he also had me take progesterone pills. We are now to the point of having a laperscopic surgery to get some more answers as to why we still cant conceive. We are hoping for some good news. In all of this he has expalined to us every bit of the procedure and what will go in my body. He has told us different over the counter medications for myself and my husband to take to also help with conceiving.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
All the nursing staff are so nice. They definitely all have a heart. And some have been in the same position as myself and others. They are so easy to talk to and always have a smile on there face. They always try to make you feel better or put you in a good mood. They always know what to say when you may feel discouraged or feel like giving up. They are definitely there because they love there job.
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
I think everything about this clinic is perfect. Its very homey and you just feel very comfortable. There is a lot of privacy in all the rooms so you dont feel awkward. I like where its at because when you walk in you know everyone is there for the same thing.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
They had specific days and times that you needed to come in. It may have messed with my work schedule. But it had nothing to do with the place. Its just how our body works. I know there are many people going through what i am so i understand. There are only certain days we can be seen at the clinic but that is because thats when they will be able to see things better in our body because of the cycle day we are on our what it looks like for the month. You cant have a baby any day of the month and they know that, thats why they plan accordingly to your cycle and when is best for your body
Describe the costs associated with your care under James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Everything has been very expensive. But the billing staff along with dr. young has worked with me with my insurance to get some things covered as we know not a lot of fertility is covered. The staff has also given me a couple numbers for medications so im not paying hundreds of dollars on one month of something. They have been very easy with taking payments on things. The only thing i wish they did was payments on iui or ivf. Instead of needing money up front. It can get discouraging knowing your doing all this paying all this for a possibility a what if. And if it doesn't happen you spend that all over again. I wish there was better payment options like that.

I was given the option to either do a single or multiple embryo transfer [by Dr. Valerie Shavell]...I felt as though my opinions mattered and that ultimately I was able to help make the decisions for myself...I felt as though my provider listened to my concerns and looked into my medical record to get a full background so that my consultation wasn’t a waste of time. She also called me personally to discuss some of my lab results and went over the next steps with me which was very helpful.
Strengths [of The Fertility Center of Michigan] are being very timely to get back with lab results and communicate what the next steps are. When I called the clinic with concerns I was take seriously and I was gotten in to the clinic for a follow up quickly...The nursing staff provided a lot of information that was helpful and they made it clear that if you ever had any questions to not be afraid to call...Some costs that seemed to be optional ended up being costs that were required for successful treatment

Dr. Dodd’s is a very caring and intelligent man. He personally called me to explain the results of the negative pregnancy test and met with us immediately after to start planning our next steps...We bumped up follistim to 187.5 because my follicles weren’t as large as anticipated. Had bloodwork/ultrasound every 2 days to track. When follicles looked good we scheduled the egg retrieval.
Heidi [nurse at The Fertility Center of Michigan] was great. The front desk staff are excellent. They remembered me and treated me like family. The staff in Grand Rapids Michigan were awful. On the day of the mock transfer and ultrasound, the nurse did not greet me, did not introduce herself, and did not explain things as she went. She pulled up my shirt and started putting ultrasound gel on without even telling me I needed to lift up my shirt. When the doctor completed the mock transfer, both the nurse and the doctor walked out without telling me
How was your experience with William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Dr. Dodds is very kind and informative. A different doctor did my embryo transfer and I was very disappointed in how things were handled. Dr Dodd’s listened to our complaints and assured us this next round will be different. He helped us with cost as we didn’t anticipate a negative test. He personally called us to go over results and met with us to discuss moving forward.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Make sure you see Dr Dodd’s and not Dr young.

Dr. Dodd’s is a very caring and intelligent man. He personally called me to explain the results of the negative pregnancy test and met with us immediately after to start planning our next steps.
Describe the protocols William Dodds (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
We started out with 150 follistim and 1ml menopure for the first 4 days. Seeing the doctor every 2 days for ultrasound and bloodwork. We bumped up follistim to 187.5 because my follicles weren’t as large as anticipated. Had bloodwork/ultrasound every 2 days to track. When follicles looked good we scheduled the egg retrieval. I was given IV sedation, antibiotics, and valume to take. The next day Dr young called stating we retrieved 11 eggs but 1 fertilized and was “Mediocre with no hope of survival but we will transfer anyway”. We transferred the one embryo. I was given antibiotics to take for 3 days (I think) and progesterone injections every night until pregnancy test results.
Describe your experience with your nurse at The Fertility Center of Michigan. (Assigned nurse: Heidi )
Heidi was great. When the doctor completed the mock transfer, both the nurse and the doctor walked out without telling me I can put my pants back on. I had to ask if I was able to get dressed and asked if there was a pad I could have. She said “yes” very coldly and walked out. I had to find the exit myself. She also assisted Dr Young (whom I complained about during my embryo transfer) during the embryo transfer. It was the same experience. Did not tell me what was going on, did not greet my husband or myself. Did not say congratulations or happy transfer day. They were stone cold. I told Dr Dodd’s how this made me want to stop IVF and I refused to work with them again.
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Strengths: the front desk staff are great. Weaknesses: appointments being pushed out so far. I feel as though this clinic lost sight of what IVF means to the patients requiring treatment. This clinic does not send appointment reminders. This is the closest clinic to us and we have no other choice but to go through them. I feel as though that is taken advantage of and they don’t really know what it is like to go through what their patients go through.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
There is a non refundable IVF treatment fee that is $1800. We were quoted around $6,500 for the whole process. Our insurance gave us a $25,000 lifetime limit and $10,000 lifetime medication limit. After the first round we have some left for lifetime limit and $1,000 left for medication. I did not expect this.
Describe William Dodds (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
We were supposed to transfer multiple embryos. Our doctor preferred this. He said it had a higher chance of one embryo sticking.
What specific things went wrong at The Fertility Center of Michigan?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
When going through IVF, all injections are done at home. They send you home with a folder FULL of paperwork and hope you get the dosing/timing correct. The first nurse I had (not Heidi) did not even demo the injections or how to draw/mix them. Heidi straightened this out.

How was your experience with Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Dr Thakur has a wonderful research and education background. She treats patients holistically and really listens to concerns/fears as well as dreams and provides comfort and advice to achieve family planning goals. She helped advocate for me when I suspected I had an underlying medical condition that no other dr would listen to me about. She did listen to me and through surgery found out I did have what I was considered about. She goes above and beyond to help you and provide suggestions to reduce stress in your life. She is hands down the best physician I have ever talked to
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Be clear in your family planning goals and if you are apprehensive about one thing don’t be afraid to ask. Dr Thakur is a wonderful resource
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Unfortunately I had an ectopic pregnancy, but Dr Thakur and her team checked on me daily and helped provide advice during my ER visit. They were considered of not only my physical health but emotional health. Dr Thakur takes the time to educate on the importance of finding ways to destress and provides resources on counseling services if desired. I think it’s important to look at a patient holistically and Dr Thakur does that. The team of nurses have been helpful as well and respond promptly to phone or online messages which I appreciate
Describe the protocols Mili Thakur used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
At the time I started services I had an unexplained infertility diagnosis and we tried two cycles of letrozole. I fell pregnant the second cycle but unfortunately it was a tubal pregnancy. The fertility drug was recommended because I previously had a procedure which showed my tubes were clear and I feel the recommendation was appropriate
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Sometimes it would be hard to get ahold of nursing but telephone however leaving a voicemail or online message I did receive a follow up with in a day which is a reasonable time frame. The nurses have been very caring and supportive during my fertility journey and I felt comfortable working with them

Describe the costs associated with your care under Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
My insurance paid for my dr visits and medications costs. My insurance did not cover IVF. I did not do IVF but I believe there is a 2,000 down payment that goes toward IVF and the another 10,000+ you need to pay before treatment that covers the IVF procedure egg retrieval etc (not meds)

I appreciate that she [Dr. Shavell] lets me advocate for myself and make decisions to a certain extent of course. I ultimately trust her judgement...I think she’s tried every protocol to get me a good number of embryos and we have. I think she listens and truly wants me to be content with a protocol...She noted that I may need to stim a day longer which we did and even changed up the protocol the last two days and I was shocked at the results...
Unique approach in that they [The Fertility Center of Michigan] mainly do 2-3 day transfers and the 5 day embryo transfer seems like more a request and trouble to do whereas that’s the norm for most clinics, this could be viewed as a weakness. I think their strength would be in their team of doctors who are smart and friendly but you don’t get a lot of face time with them which is hard...
How was your experience with Valerie Shavell at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
I think my experience overall has been positive. I’ve done three retrievals now so I think she’s tried every protocol to get me a good number of embryos and we have. I think she listens and truly wants me to be content with a protocol. I think sometimes I don’t get all the answers to my oddball questions, but sometimes she doesn’t have all of the answers and that’s okay. I just like having all the answers!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Valerie Shavell at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Advocate for yourself. Be happy with what’s happening because I believe that’s what she wants too.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Valerie Shavell at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
I think she treats us well and the care is caterer to our situation. I appreciate that she lets me advocate for myself and make decisions to a certain extent of course. I ultimately trust her judgement.
Describe the protocols Valerie Shavell used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
First we used antagonist because it is the most popular. It didn’t go as well as hoped (less than half of eggs were mature) so we tried long lupron for the second, with hgh just to try something else and see how it would go. That round went okay but I knew it could be better. I asked to do another antagonist with hgh this time and it did go really well. She noted that I may need to stim a day longer which we did and even changed up the protocol the last two days and I was shocked at the results.
Describe your experience with your nurse at The Fertility Center of Michigan. (Assigned nurse: Ashley/Erin)
Ashley seems like she has a lot of experience and knowledge. I appreciated that. She answered one question wrong for me and ended up taking Valium before my retrieval so that’s the only weakness. Erin seems new and confers with Ashley a lot. The only way she’s going to learn is experience which I can’t fault her for. It just is nice to have a confident nurse.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Valerie Shavell at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
$10,000 for a retrieval (x3)!and around $5-6k for meds (x3), then an additional $2k for frozen transfer
Describe Valerie Shavell's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Day 2 or 3 embryos so they do multiple which I would agree with the logic.
What specific things went wrong at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol

Describe the specific things that went wrong at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
The one instance with the Valium before a retrieval where I was being sedated. Nothing terrible happened I was just very sick and sleepy. Then my second retrieval, I noticed they should’ve told me to use stim medication on the night I triggered which makes me think I might’ve had better results but who knows

[Dr. Young] helped guide us through the process of genetic testing and the services offered by the clinic...My husband and I were exploring the possibility of IVF to insure our child wouldn't inherit a potentially dangerous gene carried by my partner...helped us to determine that my husband was NOT carrying that gene...was discovered that I did in fact struggle with infertility...His confidence has inspired us to not lose hope that we may add a child to our family someday
[The Fertility Center of Michigan] is convenient because it offers multiple locations and the staff is always working hard to fit everyone in smoothly...The nursing staff is always adept at returning calls and communicating effectively. As the primary patient contacts, they are always thinking ahead...Only one minor inconvenience when my script was not sent in one month. Staff corrected the issue promptly and apologized
How was your experience with James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
When we first met Dr. Young we had not anticipated infertility issues. My husband and I were exploring the possibility of IVF to insure our child wouldn't inherit a potentially dangerous gene carried by my partner. He helped guide us through the process of genetic testing and the services offered by the clinic. It helped us to determine that my husband was NOT carrying that gene after all. We were able to pivot smoothly when after a year it was discovered that I did in fact struggle with infertility after all. His confidence has inspired us to not lose hope that we may add a child to our family someday.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Be prepared and listen. Dr. Young is an excellent communicator, and I'm confident he can answer any question posed or at least work to find the answer.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Dr. Young and staff are always careful to treat their patients with dignity, respect, and sensitivity to the problems at hand. They do not see you as a number, or even a name - they see the whole person and treat the whole person.
Describe the protocols James Young (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
Femara 2.5mg (1 round) - ineffective Femara 5mg (1 round) - ineffective Femara 7.5mg (6 rounds) - increase in follicle production every time. 1 successful conception ending in ectopic pregnancy. IVF - Referred but on hold due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
The nursing staff is always adept at returning calls and communicating effectively. As the primary patient contacts, they are always thinking ahead and working hard to help their patients feel confident.
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
The clinic is convenient because it offers multiple locations and the staff is always working hard to fit everyone in smoothly. With fertility matters, treatment isn't always "black and white", but the clinic is very adept at remaining flexible to suit the client's needs.
Describe the costs associated with your care under James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Costs run about $300 - $400 per month for my follicle scans, consults, and meds.
What specific things went wrong at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy

Dr. Dodd’s was personable and answered any questions you had, but you only saw him once. The rest of the time you deal with the nurses...I was concerned about being able to get pregnant due to losing a Fallopian tube a year and a half prior to this appointment along with having PCOS. He was very thorough and kind about everything...We decided to try doing the IUI first because I still have a good Fallopian tube.
You have to go go between the 2 locations(Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids) because they cannot she the insemination procedures in Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo staff [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] is amazing and very friendly and helpful. Grand Rapids staff not as friendly...[nurses] are amazing. They call you back that day to answer any questions, make sure you fully understand and don’t rush you. Very caring people.

The first time I saw him was at the initial consult. He was very friendly and answered my questions, and went over my health history. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?

The first thing is Dr. Dodd’s gave me a list of speed donors to chose from. We decided to try doing the IUI first because I still have a good Fallopian tube. The first time we did the Clomid and Ovidril. A couple of ultrasounds and then the IUI. This did not work. The second time they changed the meds to Letrozole and Ovidril, a few ultrasounds and then the IUI. This attempt failed also. The third time they did the Letrozole, Gonal-f injections, Ovidril and progesterone, about 4 Ultrasounds and then the IUI. This attempt failed as well. They were hoping I would produce more eggs and I still only got about 2-3 each time.

Dr. Young explained everything about our next steps in treatment in detail. He is straight to the point, but will answer any questions that you have. We never felt rushed in the appointment and were able to have all of our questions answered no matter how small it might be...He has so much knowledge...He discussed why previous treatments hadn’t worked and why he was recommending me to use oral medication and injectables. He discussed why my lab values and PCOS were affecting our fertility each month and how this new plan would help us overcome my medical issues. So far, I have not fallen pregnant, but I am positive that we will get the right treatment plan and positive pregnancy soon.
There are two nurses that I work with [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] every time I go into the office. They are both so compassionate and make me feel like they actually care about each cycle and helping us start our family. They help to explain the treatment plan from the doctor and answer any questions that I might have. I never feel rushed when I am in with my nurses...I don’t know if I have enough words to explain how much I have loved working with this clinic. The staff at the front desk remember me and my preferences, including that I like to pay my bill before I am seen, so that I can get back to work quicker. They are often running early for appointments. Everyone is friendly and caring and make me feel like I am being cared for every step of this journey. Scheduling is often quite easy with my work schedule. If I have to call and leave a message, someone is calling me back in less than an hour... This clinic has given me hope. Clinic Nps

Dr. Dodds wants to try two cycles of hybrid medications with IUI to increase my chances of conceiving. I will be using Femara 5.0, and Gonal F at 450iu at 75iu per injection for a few days days, and a trigger shot of Ovidrel at 250 mcg/.5 ml He also gave me the success rates for all of the options that he gave me (such as, I could try Laproscopic surgery to check for endo but it would only increase my chances of conceiving by about 20%, or I could do the hybrid and IUI which on average 60% conceive within 3 cycles, or IVF which is a 60% change on the first try no matter if I have endo or anything else, with the added bonus of having egg retrieval and FET at the age of 32 instead of later in life, especially with my low ovarian reserve.
it is a nice sized clinic [The Fertility Center of MI-Kalamazoo] but it is kind of like a satellite clinic, they can do consultations, ultrasounds etc. there but for anything else you might need or want done ( IUI, HSG, IVF) you have to go to Grand Rapids to do. Which at times can make for time constraints especially for work hours. The clinic is also only open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (which isn't a problem for me but I could see it causing issues for some people depending on their work schedule or commute time)
How was your experience with William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Dr. Dodds was very well spoken and personable, he told me the findings of my blood work and what was normal or abnormal and what he thought we needed to work on. He have me several different options as to what my next steps should be, but also rated them as what he would "suggest if I were his own child" . He made it very clear that he wanted to get me to what my husband and my goal of having a child in the most cost effective and healthy way possible.

Dr. Thakur was very direct but also very compassionate. She sincerely seemed concerned that I was having trouble conceiving, and wants to figure out why. ... I was also put on synthroid because my absorption rate was "normal" but hypo for someone who is TTC. ... I am very happy, she sat down with me and gave me numbers and what those numbers meant and what she wanted to do and how I was supposed to do it.
It is still very early in my treatment at the clinic [FC - MI] but so far I can say that they are very organized but also very busy. Some of the hours are a little strange but I also work a kind of first/second shift job so I have some odd hours open. ... When setting up my first appointment I was given a range of about how much my visit would cost ... hey were very helpful and compassionate, they made sure that any questions I had were answered and that I had everything I needed.
How was your experience with Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
It is still very early in my treatment, but compared to how I was treated at my OB/GYN I am very happy, she sat down with me and gave me numbers and what those numbers meant and what she wanted to do and how I was supposed to do it. She also was very compassionate, and explained that there are several different factors that could be at play and to conceive they all need to work in sync.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Mili Thakur at The Fertility Center of Michigan?

I am still very new to the clinic and Dr. Thakur, but we are trying 3 cycles of femara using OPK's with an optimal trigger shot to begin because I was able to conceive once on a clomid cycle ( but it resulted in a chemical pregnancy). I was also put on synthroid because my absorption rate was "normal" but hypo for someone who is TTC.

My insurance does not cover any costs. When setting up my first appointment I was given a range of about how much my visit would cost so that I would be prepared and then at my visit I was given a sheet that broke down the clinic costs for visits, procedures, and most medications.

We had our egg retrieval [with Dr. Dodds] and got 22 follicles 18 were mature, 14 were fertilized, 2 were implanted and 11 were frozen. We resulted in a positive pregnancy but at the 6 week ultrasound it wasn't looking good. I continued to take progesterone injections and at our follow up ultrasound we found both embryos implanted but we're not viable and I miscarried...Was very knowledgeable and seemed honest with us every time we spoke. He seemed to really want to help us with our family and offered different suggestions we could take. He left a lot up to us on how quickly we wanted to move forward and supported any decisions we made for our treatments.
They [staff at The Fertility Center of Michigan] seemed to care about our situation and we're hopeful with helping us on our infertility journey...[nurses were] Very helpful with any situation. Always returned my calls when I had any questions I had regarding our procedure to make sure I was still following our plan and things were progressing normally...The only thing was when we had our miscarriage after our first IVF procedure [at The Fertility Center of Michigan] it was much harder to receive help...

Describe the protocols William Dodds (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
We started with 3 rounds of femara resulted all negative pregnancy tests, had an HSG done results were normal. I started IVF procedures with injections in the morning and also in the evening. I don't remember every injection but was closely monitored by blood work and ultrasounds every other day. Once we got the okay I had a trigger shot and another injection. We had our egg retrieval and got 22 follicles 18 were mature, 14 were fertilized, 2 were implanted and 11 were frozen. We resulted in a positive pregnancy but at the 6 week ultrasound it wasn't looking good. I continued to take progesterone injections and at our follow up ultrasound we found both embryos implanted but we're not viable and I miscarried.

Very helpful with any situation. Always returned my calls when I had any questions I had regarding our procedure to make sure I was still following our plan and things were progressing normally.
Describe your experience with The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Great at providing a way to get pregnant. Offers many more options and insight that regular ob's are not able to do. The only thing was when we had our miscarriage after our first IVF procedure it was much harder to receive help. There were other circumstances and factors that occurred during this time which made it more difficult. In hindsight I would have found a better OB sooner to help with the process.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
I was given a few options based on availability and I picked what I was able to do between my work schedule and office hours.
Describe the costs associated with your care under William Dodds (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
With our original insurance we had all of our procedures covered outside of a minor copay for each appointment. With our new insurance they do not work with so everything is now out of pocket even though our current insurance offers fertility treatments the same as our previous insurance it's just now out of network.

Dr Dodds is one the kindest people I have ever met. He was so caring and understanding. He helped us see the light at the end of the tunnel when we couldn't see it ourselves. He celebrated our victories with us and was always there if we needed it. He was willing to look into things if needed and would always talk over my options with us so that we could decide together what was best...Dr Dodds was always so kind to me and positive. He was open to things I suggested and answered all my questions without rushing me. He made me feel like I was the only patient every time he was with me.
$6000 for IVF not including meds or monitoring appointments $3300 for frozen transfer My insurance covered meds with a $150 copay for each medication and completely covered ultrasounds...Everyone at the [Fertility Center] Kalamazoo office is wonderful from the front desk staff to the doctors. The only weakness I would say is their open hours so you have to drive to the main Grand Rapids office sometimes but for the most part don't have to

Describe the protocols William Dodds (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
My first retrieval we used follostim and menopur and then added in ganirelix when appropriate. We triggered with both HCG and lupron due to my history of mild OHSS. I did a fresh transfer with that cycle that resulted in a negative pregnancy test. I had 3 frozen day 2 embryos left from this cycle. My next retrieval cycle we did the same protocol but this time did a freeze all cycle. My first frozen transfer of a day 3 embryo using the long lupron protocol resulted in a chemical pregnancy. My second frozen transfer using the stimulated protocol (due to unwanted side effects with lupron) with follistim resulted in a successful singleton pregnancy.

We have been seeing Dr Young since 2011. He has always taken his time with us, explaining every little detail. He remembers what my husband and I do for a living and what we do for fun. When we lost our daughter at 19 weeks, he called us and shared his condolences. When our last FET failed, he was just as confused and sad that it didn’t work and ordered tests to make sure he wasn’t missing anything before we attempt our last transfer. I may cry in our talks, but I always end up smiling by the time I leave his office.
[Fertility Center of MI's] Weakness: The cost. We have some insurance coverage for treatment (meds, labs, ultrasounds, etc) but the IUIs, Retrieval and FETs all come out of pocket for us. They have a Family Building Fund, but you only if you make less than a certain amount of income, so we don’t qualify for help. Strengths: Everything else. This long, almost 8 year journey that we are still on has been more bearable because of the kind and compassionate care that we have received from everyone in the office
How was your experience with James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
There is seriously nothing that My husband and I don’t like about Dr Young. He seems truly vested in us creating our family. When he is doing procedures he walks us through each step and often uses humor, which I appreciate. If there was one thing that I think needs to be improved upon is his handshake. It is very firm/confident and my husband always brings it up after our appts.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of James Young (retired) at The Fertility Center of Michigan?
Tell him what your goals are and what your timeline is. He won’t make you rush into anything, but he will make sure that he looks into everything before suggesting major procedures

Describe the protocols James Young (retired) used in your cycles at The Fertility Center of Michigan and their degree of success.
He was very patient with us. He put both my husband and I through testing, then we did some cycles on clomid. When those didnt work he ordered a hystosalpinogram to make sure my clear. When those weren’t successful, he suggested IUIs and we did 2-3 and when those weren’t successful he did laparoscopic surgery to see if there was anything getting in the way. We tried one more IUI before he suggested IVF with ICSI because of my husbands sperm issues
Describe your experience with your nurse at The Fertility Center of Michigan. (Assigned nurse: Julie S, Julie M, and Ashley)
All of the nurses that I have interacted with have been amazing. Kind, caring, answering all of my questions and returning calls in an incredibly timely manner. They have made this whole journey incredibly more tolerable

Over the course of our 8 year journey, we have probably spent close to $30,000 to $40,000 out of pocket
Describe James Young (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at The Fertility Center of Michigan.
Dr Young had us transfer 2 each time and we were good with that. He always explained multiples were possible and the dangers of that, but the rewards out-weighed the risks for us
