Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

Dr. Mersereau was so invested in helping us start a family. She cried with me when we heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time and cheered us on every time we had another great appointment and ultrasound. She made us feel so comfortable. I still send her updates on my son now and he's 10 months old.... I had to have a number of different tests done to help determine why I was having recurrent losses. She found I was pre-diabetic and also had adhesions in my uterus from the miscarriages. I followed a very strict diet and exercise plan and prepped for surgery to remove the adhesions.
The staff [UNC Fertility] is great and the clinic is very clean. They make dealing with billing easy too -whether that's through insurance or not. Sometimes the waiting could be full so wait time could sometimes feel long but they have complimentary beverages and a TV to keep you occupied while you wait.... The nurses were always so compassionate and nice. They always made me feel comfortable.... Dr. Mersereau was so invested in helping us start a family.

She [Dr. Merereau] is excellent and professional. She listened and gave good feedback. She gave realistic expectations and was compassionate when I had a miscarriage. I am not sure she was aware of the miscommunication that was going on in the clinic between patients and staff...Maybe if I made follow up visits with her I wouldn't have had so many miscommunications with the staff...Dr. M is great.
The office [UNC] needs to have a stronger organizational structure in order for me to recommend anyone to come to this clinic. I could have come at a bad time (changing of administration). I had a botched IUI and twice they said I never called to schedule my IUI (notifying of period), even though I called and talked to the nurse who had to get my clomid prescribed. They did an IUI even though it was clear I had already ovulated....They had different information and instructions depending on the nurse and the day I called. I felt like it took a long time to get a clear response...

She [Dr Mersereau] was very direct and to the point, but did it in a way that was warm and not condescending. She explained every aspect of treatment, and was very conservative in how she approached our situation. So each step was gentle and not overly aggressive/invasive. I walked out of each appointment feeling confident we were going to get our baby.
Wendy and Kim [at UNC Fertility] were the nurses I worked with most closely. They heard me cry over the phone a couple of times and they were so incredibly compassionate. They talked me through my questions and never seemed rushed or like they didn't care. Priscilla was magical at drawing blood.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility?
Trust her instincts. I was very well informed and wanted to jump the gun with treatments and testing. She kindly shut all of that down and helped me slow down. We ended up pregnant after three cycles.
Describe the protocols Jennifer Mersereau used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
I had a history of PCOS, irregular cycles and anovulation. We started with 5mg of letrozole on CD3-5, then I had an ultrasound to check follicle growth and then we were asked to have timed intercourse. She wanted to try this protocol for 3-6 cycles to give us an equal chance at ovulation/conception as any other fertile couple (20%).

Modern, calm, organized, clean.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Jennifer Mersereau at UNC Fertility.
We just paid for genetic testing, medicine costs and a specialist copay at each visit. Everything else was billed through insurance.

Dr. Fritz was very nice, yet very professional. He was very approachable and didn’t make us feel like a just a number. He seemed very knowledgeable and explained everything to us very detailed. He also had a lot of patience to answer all our questions. It’s sad that he’s retired but I wish him the best...explained everything to us very detailed and answered all our questions and doubts without any issues and in a timely manner.
UNC fertility is very professional. Waits for your appointments are not as long as other places. The nurses, and radiology techs are nice and professional too. Their place was always neat and good variety of snacks, coffee and water bottles in the waiting area...Wendy was a great nurse. On top of everything, making sure everything gets done in a timely manner. And helped us navigate some trouble with the pharmacy not having our meds ready on time.

She [Dr. Mersereau] seems to deeply care about the patients and was always honest with me. I especially appreciated her illustrations that explained the process in complete detail. We haven’t been lucky as far as are results yet, but will continue on with her. She is very sympathetic when calling about a negative test which I appreciate too. ... She was always warm and explained everything.
Great clinic [UNC Fertility]! ... Helpful, always available on the portal, even outside of work hours! Love them [nurses]. ... Don’t only pay attention to stats because some clinics that are not private will accept harder cases. This includes top notch university ones. The only downside of UNC is the waiting room is very crowded. It is sad to see so many people going through this. At some point, they may need to expand the waiting room.

Dr. Peavey was attentive and it was obvious that she cared about our treatment...She was attentive and knowledgeable and was informed on our reason for seeking treatment. While we appreciated that in Dr. Peavey, there was a lack of communication regarding our care and I often wondered if the doctors that actually did the ultrasounds and other checkups communicated clearly to Dr. Peavey... I went to the clinic about 5 times and only saw her once.
This [financial communication] was the most frustrating part of going to this clinic [UNC Fertility]. We were told that a financial person would contact us and 3 months later we still hadn't heard from them. The costs of our treatment was unclear...The clinic was nicely decorated and there appear to be many qualified doctors there. It felt like the overall environment of the clinic was seeing humans as numbers. I did not feel like I got the best treatment due to a lack of communication between the individuals on my case.

I trust Dr. Coward. He’s knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging. He’s also honest about whether or not he thinks a course of treatment will end up being successful.... I was a participant in a fertility study during which I received three rounds of Clomid, Novarel, and IUI. It wasn’t until we were in our second cycle that Dr. Coward had to explain to my partner and me that we had male factor as well, because my husband’s numbers were very low. He suggested a course of action for us and gave us facts for our chances of success with the IUI moving forward.
The clinic [UNC Fertility] is clean, orderly, and very professional. Dr Fritz explains everything in detail so that we could understand the process. Always greeted us with a smile and spoke even when we're not seeing him directly. Responded to email in a timely manner or had his nurse to contact me right away.... We did max stimulation with PGT testing due to failed implantation attempts. The result from PGT were not what we or Dr. Fritz could explain
The clinic [UNC Fertility] did not set up appointments for next visit. You always had to call to schedule according to your calendar or nurse instructions. Caring, compassionate, an expert, and true professional. Plan on returning to him [Dr. Fritz] for the next go round despite the distance, would not want to go elsewhere. Every doctor every encounter at this clinic was impressive. Even those completing their soecializationa post med school! (Fellows)... At my request we kept the dosing lower for the egg retrieval so as not to harvest a million eggs we wouldn’t end up using.
Every doctor every encounter at this clinic [UNC Fertility] was impressive. Even those completing their soecializationa post med school! (Fellows)... Strength: communication, organization, clear billing, everything about them. Weaknesses: there were so many times I’d be sitting in the waiting room week after week and wanted so badly to discuss what I was going through with the people who were going through the same thing. A voluntary support group would have been wonderful.

A voluntary support group would have been wonderful.
Describe Marc Fritz (retired)'s approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at UNC Fertility.
All the doctors plus the embryologists recommended single for the first two and were on board with double for the last round.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Fritz is kind and gentle as a provider. He takes the time to make sure I am comfortable (physically) and frequently asks how I am feeling during procedures. During consultations he explains things clearly and remains positive and genuine. The clinic is busy and the wait for a consultation is occasionally longer than I'd prefer, but when in an appointment he is fully present and engaged.
Wendy [nurse at UNC Fetility] is truly one of the most caring people I have the pleasure of knowing. She's knowledgeable, patient, kind and well-organized. She answers emails regularly at off-hours and weekends, no matter how trivial the question or concern...The clinic's support staff is phenomenal. They learn your name quickly and genuinely care to provide a good experience when infertility is very stressful. The clinic is very busy, so if they are running behind you will have longer than average wait times.
How was your experience with Marc Fritz (retired) at UNC Fertility?
Dr. Fritz is a compassionate doctor with a kind bedside manner. His wealth of experience in infertility treatment is incredibly valuable to me as a patient. He also consults with other doctors (in and out of the practice) when necessary.

He [Dr. Marc Fritz] is blunt and straightforward...He explained things well but I am in the medical profession. My husband left without understanding much, which is okay. However when it came down to testing at the end of a procedure I told him we hadn’t decided yet and he told me that he wouldn’t have done the procedure if he knew that. Okay I should have communicated better but he didn’t phrase this particular step as an option..
The clinic [UNC Fertility] was clean and professional looking. The staff was friendly but not forth coming with information. I had to ask them a lot of questions. There was some confusion with billing and that was frustrating...When talking with the financing people there was some confusing information provided via email and the call us if you have questions but if you don’t have time to talk to me when I call the first time why would I call back

He was amazing! He would explain lab results in detail. Dr. Young had a sense of humor and provide a comfortable setting when the process is so stressful, but you would always leave with a piece of mind that the path you were doing was the right treatment.... Dr. Young would call whenever there was reason to explain any lab result. He was completely understanding and listened, then gave his advice. He was always realistic and optimistic.
The clinic [UNC Fertility] was so warm. Everyone from the receptionists to the nurses to the doctors would greet you with a smile and treat you as though you were a friend. There was one receptionist who did not know how to file payments and was not friendly.... We did a payment plan 20000... Aly would be prompt to answer any question and was knowledgeable about my protocal. She was so compassionate.... Dr. Young would call whenever there was reason to explain any lab result.

He [Dr. Fritz] listens to what you're saying and acts accordingly. He's aggressive in terms of trying to get a woman pregnant. He sets the program and changed it whenever we needed. When I had to do an HSG, he walked me through exactly what would happen and when my results came back negative, he let me know immediately...He was very clear on his expectations given my age at the time....the nurses were the ones giving me my inseminations.
It's a little hard to find when you first go there because the inseminations happened in UNC Medical, which is somewhat of a maze. Otherwise, I've got no complaints....His [Dr. Marc Fritz] office staff was also very nice, which was a huge, since the nurses were the ones giving me my inseminations...They were fine. My last nurse was a little aggressive with my IUI, but I can't complain because that was the one that actually took.... it was about $150 per visit.

Dr. Young is amazing! He took his time, answered all of our questions, and thoroughly explained everything to us. He has been there every step of the way and didn’t make us feel inferior. There simply is no one better. He [Marc Fritz] has been in the field for so long and was so encouraging through the entire process. I wouldn’t have my babies today had he not been the angel he was. They [UNC Fertility-Raleigh] are the best. No weaknesses that I encountered. Even down to waiting - you didn’t sit in the waiting room long. I would put them up against everyone in the nation and have no doubt they’d come out on top.... He was much more economical than the first clinic I used. He also ALWAYS tried to bill insurance before charging me out of pocket.

He wanted to be as minimally invasive as possible and let God be God and do the work.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at UNC Fertility.
They are the best. Available 24/7 and ALWAYS with a smile on their faces.
Describe your experience with UNC Fertility.
They are the best. No weaknesses that I encountered. Even down to waiting - you didn’t sit in the waiting room long. I would put them up against everyone in the nation and have no doubt they’d come out on top.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Marc Fritz (retired) at UNC Fertility.
He was much more economical than the first clinic I used. He also ALWAYS tried to bill insurance before charging me out of pocket.

He [Dr. Marc Fritz] is so careful and kind. When you meet him you feel like family with him and all the staff. He talks to you so you understand everything and doesn’t promise what he can’t deliver. He is honest and upfront about your outcome... Dr Fritz is a top notch docto, friend and cheerleader during the entire process. Without him and God my twins wouldn’t be here.
The only problem I had [with UNC Fertility] was with the financial department getting things straight. Part of it was Attain and part of it was the clinic. Once we had it figured out it was smooth sailing. That was the only problem I experienced.... Given my age he allowed me to put 2 embryos in.... We used fertility drugs and did two fresh transfers and one frozen transfer.

I didn't feel like I was at a doctor's office. It felt like I was talking to a friend. She [Dr. Jennifer Mersereau] never rushed us, never gave us clinical mumbo jumbo, but completely explained every step of the process. Made us feel hopeful again.... Everyone we met at UNC was great. Everyone was kind and communication was great. They explained finances to us in detail.
I really can't even begin to explain how amazing Kimberly [a nurse at UNC Fertility-Raleigh] was. She was so responsive to emails and always gave me quick, accurate information. She made me feel in control and knowledgeable at the same time. She even communicated with me after hours - who does that!!!... Everyone we met at UNC was great. Dr. Mesen used what he described as the "standard" treatment for my diagnosis. When it didn't work, and when I had concerns about the timing (which proved to be valid) he dismissed them...
Because I never saw the same doctor twice, I received conflicting advice on going forward with procedures.
How was your experience with Tolga Mesen at UNC Fertility?
Dr. Mesen used what he described as the "standard" treatment for my diagnosis. When it didn't work, and when I had concerns about the timing (which proved to be valid) he dismissed them and declared I was too fat to get pregnant and needed bariatric surgery. Not only did he defeat my dreams of childbearing, he put a substantial dent in my self-esteem.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Tolga Mesen at UNC Fertility?
Listen to your gut when you know something doesn't feel right. Advocate for yourself no matter what.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Tolga Mesen at UNC Fertility?
I only saw Dr. Mesen on my first and last visit to the clinic. He never called when I had a concern. I would only receive a brief email assuring me that I was getting the highest quality care. Furthermore, I never, ever saw the same doctor twice for monitoring or procedures.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at UNC Fertility.
Honestly, I never got to know the nurses over the curse of more than a year under the care of the clinic.
What specific things went wrong at UNC Fertility?
  • Failed to call with results

[Dr. Leah Bressler] was very optimistic without giving me too much hope in scenarios where I was asking for advice and real expectations. Very thorough and helping me understand the next steps and what the plan was at all times. I very much appreciated her willingness to jump on the phone and to reach out to other teams to help her input regarding my health...trying to select for a child without CF, we were told always to transfer one single embryo.
The front desk [at UNC Fertility] sometimes doesn’t answer which is difficult, and if you were calling in to talk to the doctor sometimes I don’t think they receive those messages and they do better with utilizing the patient portal...I understood every step of the way and [nurse] help put me at ease at the most stressful points in the process. She probably email back, at night and even on the weekends.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I've only seen Dr. Goodman twice, but I have access via the on-line patient portal... I see different Drs. when I go in for ultrasounds and had an RN do the IUI...team approach...quite good about making you feel like your case is important to them...they aren't necessarily the best at reaching out to you to see if you have questions...Sometimes, I left the clinic and didn't know what to expect...
UNC Fertility is a very comfortable atmosphere. The staff are discrete and everything is clean and welcoming. Everyone I've interacted with there is kind, from the front desk to the phlebotomists to the Drs., RNs, and financial staff...I see different Drs. when I go in for ultrasounds and had an RN do the IUI. However, they work well as a team - team approach...The IUI is about $1,100.
How was your experience with Linnea Goodman at UNC Fertility?
Sometimes, I left the clinic and didn't know what to expect. While they make you feel comfortable and like your situation is important to them, they aren't necessarily the best at reaching out to you to see if you have questions. This is a game in which you have to be resourceful and seek them out for answers to your questions.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Linnea Goodman at UNC Fertility?
Make sure you contact them with any questions. Have questions ready for your visits.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Linnea Goodman at UNC Fertility?
Dr. Goodman's team is quite good about making you feel like your case is important to them.
Describe the protocols Linnea Goodman used in your cycles at UNC Fertility and their degree of success.
We used Letrozole and transvaginal ultrasound monitoring, for the most part. You take the Letrozole on days 3-7 of your cycle, with cycle day 1 being the first day of your period. You come back mid-cycle for an ultrasound, to see if you have a viable follicle. I also used the Ovidrel shot.
Describe your experience with your nurse at UNC Fertility. (Assigned nurse: Mindy Soucy)
I have never actually met the RN that works with my Dr. I see different Drs. when I go in for ultrasounds and had an RN do the IUI. However, they work well as a team - team approach - and I don't mind it. I've only seen Dr. Goodman twice, but I have access via the on-line patient portal to all of them.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Linnea Goodman at UNC Fertility.
The IUI is about $1,100. The ultrasounds, for monitoring, are about $125-200 each. The Ovidrel shot was about $90. The Letrozole was under $10. The initial consult was totally covered under insurance, so I'm not sure how much that cost.
