This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.
For more information please see our FAQs.
Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.
Dr. Lucidi is very funny (which I love) honest, caring, knowledgeable...makes sure we have an understanding of everything that he says before we leave the office...after my 2nd miscarriage, I had a Saline sonogram done and we found fibroids in my uterus. I had an outpatient surgery to remove the fibroids, which he believed may have been the cause of the miscarriages...gave his condolences for my loss and we talked about plans for my future.
nursing staff [at VCU Medical Center] are all polite, very attentive, compassionate, and caring...made me feel human because they always took the time to speak to me. Every message I left was returned and I was spoken to with patience and respect...The check in and wait times are very short. I honestly don't think I've sat in the waiting room longer than 10 minutes...downstairs lab for bloodwork sometimes takes a few extra minutes of waiting...
How was your experience with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Lucidi is a great doctor. As his patient, he has been nothing short of a hands on doctor. With the exception of my last visit, I have seen him every time I come in the office. Due to the COVID 19 situation, he was on a rotating shift and I had to see another doctor. But I was still able to have a conference call with him after my miscarriage. He gave his condolences for my loss and we talked about plans for my future. He is very determined to help my husband and I have a family. Dr. Lucidi is very funny (which I love) honest, caring, knowledgeable, has great bedside manners, and he makes sure we have an understanding of everything that he says before we leave the office. I would highly recommend Dr. Lucidi to anyone who is in need of a RE. He came highly recommended to me by my OBGYN who had trained under him. He is just an all around great guy and physician!

Describe the protocols Scott Lucidi used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
Our 1st course of action was to get my husband and I tested. I was given several different blood tests and my husband had a semen test done all of which came back normal. After my 1st miscarriage under Dr. Lucidi's care, I was given a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) to check for blocked fallopian tubes. One was completely open and the 2nd was inconclusive because the pain became too much to complete the test. After my 2nd miscarriage, I had a Saline sonogram done and we found fibroids in my uterus. I had an outpatient surgery to remove the fibroids, which he believed may have been the cause of the miscarriages. I did a failed cycle of IUI in between losses. I recently just had my 3rd loss and the doctor thinks a fibroid may have grown back inside my uterus so in another week or so Dr. Lucidi will perform another saline sonogram to check and then well go from there.

With IUI, we had to pay $400 out of pocket for the procedure. The sperm retrieval was covered by my insurance.
My insurance covers a lot of the expenses so I only have to come out of pocket a little for HCG tests and ultrasounds. May $100 for the ultrasounds & HGC testings.
Dr. Lucidi took the time to explain to me and my husband every detail of the process and made us feel very assured and confident. My husband has low sperm count, and Dr. Lucidi referred him to a urologist ... With my course of treatment Dr. Lucidi recommended our only chance with my husbands low sperm count would be IVF with ICSI. ...
VCU does have patient portal where you can reach the nurses and they check the messages everyday, so if you need them to call they will. ... The strengths of the office are how thorough they are and you really do not feel like a number. The only weakness the clinic has is being able to get ahold of someone when calling. You may play phone tag a few times but don't let that deter you.
How was your experience with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
As a patient coming to a fertility clinic is very daunting in itself and not knowing what's going on or if you will ever be able to conceive is scary. Dr. Lucidi was very thorough and I had some test run on me to make sure everything was fine and even had an ultrasound that day to check on my ovaries. I wasn't really expecting much out of the visit but just a consultation and just going over my labs and my husbands SA. This made me more confident in choosing this clinic and I didn't feel like a number. We took a break for 2 years and kept trying naturally. Fast forward to 2020 and I set up another appointment and we get the ball rolling, right where we left off.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Lucidi will make sure he has all his ducks in a row before recommending your course of treatment, just trust the process.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Lucidi took the time to explain to me and my husband every detail of the process and made us feel very assured and confident. My husband has low sperm count, and Dr. Lucidi referred him to a urologist within the group and my husband had more test run to figure out what would be causing the low sperm count. The testing all came back normal and he explained to us that it was a idiopathic reasoning behind his counts.

With my course of treatment Dr. Lucidi recommended our only chance with my husbands low sperm count would be IVF with ICSI. I will start birth control for 2 weeks and then the injections. We haven't been able to start any treatment with the COVID-19 going on.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at VCU Medical Center.
Only time I had something "go wrong" was with insurance and conflicting information on coverage. I was told one procedure was covered by insurance but paperwork never got sent in. Then, was told by the clinic it was not covered but paperwork was never sent in for pre-authorization in order to make that determination with the insurance.
Dr Banks is very knowledgeable and explained her steps in depth. She sat with us and answered every question completely. She also was concerned with another medical condition that I have unrelated to fertility. I had the most comprehensive work-up with her than any other Doctor. ... She ordered blood work that showed low ovarian reserve. She prescribed medication to start a cycle and to see if I could sustain a pregnancy which was successful. She also did laser surgery to remove scar tissue. Everything was a success and after the quarantine I will be ready for transfer.
The majority of the clinic staff [VCU Medical Center] are friendly and very professional. ...I would prefer to have one assigned nurse because I have to explain more than once and that can be frustrating. The nursing staff is very kind and sensitive. Positive attitudes. When I was nervous pre-retrieval, upbeat conversations with the nurse was a nice distraction. I was very happy with my post-retrieval care - they were sweet and attentive with heating pads to keep me comfortable.
They can be hard to catch on the phone - usually have to leave a voicemail, sometimes rounds of voicemail tag. But same day responsive.

Dr. Banks was always warm and friendly, she always remembered facts about my health and my personal life. She spoke with me frequently about my job and my family. I felt like she really cared about me as a person more than a patient...made the diagnostic and iui process less daunting and stressful. She was excellent at giving me the facts while also being compassionate and comforting. I felt comfortable and prepared after every visit. Even when we lost the pregnancy Dr. Banks was patient and supportive of our next steps. She even was supportive of me going to a different clinic to try a different path.

Kristine spike with me throughout the beta testing and when we lost the baby through a chemical pregnancy. She was extremely kind and caring, patient with me and so sweet. She even waited until she knew I was off work so she could speak directly with me instead of just leaving a voicemail.

Dr. Banks performed all the necessary diagnostic tests to create a plan of action for my husband and myself. After determining I had a blocked tube she suggesting going to IVF. Cost however was a major issue for us so we elected to try iui first. She supported us and advised us to give it a try at least once but no more than 3 times. I was put on Clomid and montitored before the iui. I responded very well to the clomid and proceeded with the iui. It was successful on the first try and we were so excited. Unfortunately, the pregnancy ended in a checmical pregnancy. With Dr. Banks support we are currently participating in an IVF medication trial at another clinic.

Dr. Banks was excellent at listening to our wishes and advising us of the chances for success while being compassionate and realistic.
Dr. Lucidi is serious about his work but he cares a lot about his patients. We lost a multiples pregnancy, he took time out of his day to come to the hospital and see us when we lost them. He cried when we were finally "released" from his care with our daughter at 12 weeks and overall he just genuinely cares about his patients and making sure they get their baby...There were times when I was getting dressed that I would think of a question and he would come back in an answer my questions. He never seems rushed or annoyed and really does genuinely care about his patients and their babies. We brought our daughter back to see him when she was a few weeks old and he got emotional seeing her finally.
First we did Clomid and Letrozole, neither worked so we went on to gonal-f. WAs pregnant with multiples, lost those multiples and because of that Dr. Lucidi didn't want to take the chance of us getting pregnant with multiples again so he told us the only way he would continue to work with us, was if we decided to pursue IVF. So we did. We now have a 14 month old daughter...[nurses were] Compassionate, caring, loving, nurturing, always there, they listen to your concerns, get back to your emails in a timely manner.

My husband had to have blood drawn twice for a Y chromosome and it was never ordered or ordered incorrectly. He had to get blood drawn again and then we had to follow up on the test weeks later.
Dr. Lucidi is kind and has a pleasant sense of humor. I appreciated that he took time to listen to my questions, respond accordingly and I never felt rushed. I would have appreciated a more detailed plan of action and a more thorough analysis of my husband’s health. I must note that I stopped treatment after one failed IUI w/ Clomid....We sought treatment for unexplained. secondary infertility. My bloodwork did not raise any concerns. My husband’s semen analysis indicated 1% morphology but no further review of my husband’s health was requested. Dr. Lucidi told us that we may be able to conceive again but it may take awhile. We decided to try an IUI with clomid to increase our chances of success. We were instructed to ovulation prediction kits at home to determine my peak. Once I received the peak reading I called the office to schedule the procedure.
The clinic staff [VCU Medical Center] are very helpful. The facilities are clean and comfortable. I felt confident that the staff was there to help us and answer any questions we may have. I had to wait several weeks to for an appointment....Nursing staff was kind and quick to return calls. They took time to answer my questions and encourage me when I was discouraged....The initial visit/consultation was covered under my insurance with a small copay. The transvaginal ultrasound to examine my uterus and ovaries was just shy of $200. Semen analysis was approximately $150. I think the IUI was less than $300.

Initially Dr. Durso was engaging and kind, but after that first consultation it went down hill. She was compeltely emotionless and robotic. During my entire stimulation, she scheduled only two monitoring appointments. It was just strange and I did not feel well cared for. I found out at the end of treatment that she had left To another clinic out of town, which could explain why she didn’t seem involved at all during the treatment. The egg retrieval went well however and I had minimal pain.
The biggest advantage is the Med cost. You pick up your meds at the VCU pharmacy down the street from the clinic and it runs approximately $700-900 without insurance. Because it’s a teaching university clinic the care is not as attentive as a private clinic— you hardly ever reach anyone by phone, they are closed over major Holidays and they do batch retrieval’s. You don’t get medication/ protocol calendars or an assigned nurse. It’s very clinical and bare boned so to speak in general, without a lot of extra services.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Durso is quiet and has a strange demeanor. It may have been because she was leaving VCU, but her personality is a little bizarre and she wasn’t very engaged during treatment. I had high hopes for her after our first consult, but it went downhill after that.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
She is straightforward and not a warm and fuzzy type , if you don’t mind such a personality then she would be fine as a physician for you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Initially Dr. Durso was engaging and kind, but after that first consultation it went down hill. She was compeltely emotionless and robotic. During my entire stimulation, she scheduled only two monitoring appointments. It was just strange and I did not feel well cared for. I found out at the end of treatment that she had left To another clinic out of town, which could explain why she didn’t seem involved at all during the treatment. The egg retrieval went well however and I had minimal pain.
Describe the protocols Nancy Durso used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
Straightforward IVF protocol :
Gonal-f, menapur, citrotide, ovidrel, crinone. Stims for 10 Day with one week of BC beforehand.

Courtney and Amanda were amazing. They took such great care of me during treatment. They make the whole practice.

The pharmacy did not give us needles for our injections for menapur. We had no idea this would be the case and found out the night of our first dose. They weren’t concerned that it happened and just had me come in to get them from the clinic the next business day, a Monday. They don’t prepare you very well for the injections so make sure you are comfortable and have your needles !
Dr. Banks is warm and knowledgeable. She took the time to answer our questions and was extremely supportive of our decision to move on to IVF. We are not doing IVF through her clinic (we're going out of state) but she still offered to monitor for us.... Dr. Banks is brand new to the clinic but she obviously knows her stuff. I immediately felt like we were in good hands. She was thorough and I never felt rushed. She listened, answered all our questions, and gave us plenty of information
The clinic [VCU] is in the new building at Stoney Point. It's a really nice office. They seem to only do monitoring/IUI appointments before noon Mon-Sat. The nurses and doctors are great (Dr. Lucidi is the other doctor at the clinic).... The nursing staff at VCU is great. We've had Wendy, Christine, and Kim. All are great.... I paid a sperm bank for donor sperm and shipping...the clinic would mail back the cryotank for me after delivery (no extra cost).

Dr. Banks is brand new to the clinic but she obviously knows her stuff. I immediately felt like we were in good hands. She was thorough and I never felt rushed. She listened, answered all our questions, and gave us plenty of information (such as follicle count, lining thickness..things other doctors may not think to actually tell you).
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nicole Banks at VCU Medical Center?
She is new to the clinic so you may not be able to find a lot of reviews. But her credentials are impressive and she is warm and knowledgable. I highly recommend her.

We did IUI with donor sperm (same-sex couple). We did 100 mg Clomid for 5 days, then trigger shot (HCG) 36 hours before the procedure. We also came in for a baseline monitoring appointment and a second monitoring appointment on CD 13 to check whether the follicles were ready to trigger.

IUI out-of-pocket cost is $250. Ultrasound monitoring was billed to my insurance (I don't have any fertility coverage but it was covered). Insurance did not cover Clomid, but it was pretty cheap at Walmart. I paid a sperm bank for donor sperm and shipping...the clinic would mail back the cryotank for me after delivery (no extra cost).
Describe Nicole Banks's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
Dr. Lucidi has a great sense of humor, which really has helped put us at ease throughout our fertility journey. He has been very patient with all of our questions and doesn't get frustrated if we have asked the same questions before. Dr. Lucidi is very easy to talk to. I feel like I can be honest with how I'm feeling and can express concerns without judgement. He allows me to cry when needed without embarrassment. Dr. Lucidi is very gentle with his approach.
The clinic moved to a new building earlier this year. It is very modern and allows for privacy. The staff is very friendly. The only thing that bothers me is that there seems to be a new receptionist every we time we go. This might just be the way VCU operates, but I would like to be able to build rapport with the full staff we interact with.... Each IUI cycle was about $300. Thankfully our medical insurance helps cover a portion of the costs. IVF is estimated to be around $8,000.
How was your experience with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Our experience with Dr. Lucidi has been wonderful. I have tried other clinics in the past, but never really felt comfortable with them. Dr. Lucidi has thoroughly explained each treatment before we begin. This has included risks, any potential concerns, chance of success, step-by-step details on what the treatment entails. He has a very gentle and honest approach with every interaction we have. Dr. Lucidi is quick to respond to any follow-up questions or concerns we have that come up outside of his office. We also have not had any issues with not getting appointments scheduled with him. My only regret is not finding Dr. Lucidi sooner!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Do not be afraid to be honest and open in your conversations with Dr. Lucidi. There is no judgement. He is very understanding of what's going on. He uses humor from time to time, which caught us off guard at first. This isn't something we had experienced with our doctors.

With each step, we've been able to take as much time as needed before moving into the next step. He's also available when needed outside of our appointments when we've had questions.
Describe the protocols Scott Lucidi used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
We began our fertility journey again after a break of approx. 5 years. This was due to needing time to heal past heartbreak, several moves from my job, and a surgery that delayed our progress. After moving to Virginia, I was referred to Dr. Lucidi by some friends. Because we had already completed may cycles with clomid and at least five or six IUIs at our prior fertility clinic, Dr. Lucidi began with some examinations and tests to insure things hadn't changed. While none of the prior treatments were successful, Dr. Lucidi recommended trying the IUI process two more times just to see what happened. With each treatment, he was able to see how my ovaries and uterus responded to the fertility drugs. He could also map my cervice and uterus to determine the best route my body needed for the catheter. To ensure we had a good number of follicles, I had several ultrasounds prior to the IUI to keep checking the progress. Dr. Lucidi wanted to ensure I was ovulating but didn't want to put me at risk of conceiving multiple babies. He prefers single births or twins to allow for a healthy pregnancy and baby. Unfortunately, my IUI treatments did not result in pregnancy. We are now looking to begin IVF treatment. Dr. Lucidi has walked us through what is involved, the risks, the chances of conceiving, what to expect with the medications, etc. We will start with regulating my cycle with birth control pills. After a few weeks, we should be able to start the drugs to prepare for the egg retrieval. They will also do an analysis of my husband's sperm to ensure there's no infertility risks there before they inseminate my eggs. After the eggs are fertilized, he said it could be about two weeks before they can complete a transfer. This allow time to see if the embryos form and to have the fertility drugs help prepare my uterus. During this time, I will be going to the clinic about every other day for an ultrasound to determine when my body is ready for the transfer. Dr. Lucidi recommended doing the frozen transfer because they have had a better success rate based on past studies. We could do a fresh transfer if we desired, but have opted to follow his recommendation on the frozen transfer. At this time, we are hoping to begin our IVF journey at the end of this year or early 2019.
Describe your experience with your nurse at VCU Medical Center. (Assigned nurse: Courtney)
Courtney has been fantastic to work with. She's got a friendly personality and is genuinely concerned for her patients. For us, she has gone above and beyond. As we began to consider IVF, we ran into a problem with our insurance company. She helped with the clinic and our insurance company to get VCU certified as a center for excellence. This will allow not only us to continue our treatments with them, but allow others with the same insurance to see Dr. Lucidi's assistance. This was a time consuming process that took 3-4 months to complete. During this time, she routinely checked in on me to see how we were doing while we waited to see what happened. Courtney goes above and beyond to care for her patients.

Describe Scott Lucidi's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
Dr. Lucidi prefers single embryo transfers to reduce the chances of multiple births. He is very concerned with the risks involved in a multi-embryo pregnancy. His goal is to keep the mother's risks as low as possible and do everything he can to allow for the birth of a healthy baby.
He [Dr. Lucidi] is warm and friendly, but is realistic about expected outcomes and setting expectations for success. He keeps your health in mind as well as the health of potential babies, and is cautious in transferring the right number of embryos to limit risk of pre-term birth and other complications.... Dr. L always had a sense of humor to lighten the mood in what can be a very emotionally charged process. When I did let him know I was struggling emotionally, he was very compassionate and referred me to a trust specialist who deals with infertility, loss and birth trauma.
VCU IVF is brand-new, with clean, cheery offices, a state-of-the-art OR and embryo lab. There are also multiple options for getting blood drawn that are convenient and provide rapid results with access to results online through a portal....[Cost Of Treatment] FET $2600 ER ~$20,000 (with with 6 transfers included)... Courtney was always available and accessible and offered timely return of phone calls. I felt she was as invested in our success as much as we were, if not more sometimes.

From what I remember, we did a medicated egg retrieval in 2016 with frequent ultrasounds to assess follicle progress. Fortunately things went as planned, and we proceeded with a retrieval without having to make any adjustments to the medications or timing. I was monitored with both blood hormone levels and ultrasounds frequently. We had a successful retrieval followed by a 5 day transfer of a fresh embryo which resulted in a singleton birth (my daughter), and sent 9 embryos to freeze. We have since done one Natural FET cycle supplemented with a HcG trigger, which did not result in pregnancy. We are currently looking forward to our second FET, again with HcG trigger.

Describe Scott Lucidi's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
I don't have many (if any health issues), just age working against me, so he recommended single transfer for both my fresh and my frozen transfers. I understand the risks of multiples are real, and appreciate he's taking a safe approach and keeping a long-term perspective.
He genuinely cares for you. He makes sure that you understand everything that is happening. He spends as much time as you need answering your questions. Even repeating them a million times if needed....He is easy to get in touch with. Always pleasant. He talks to you and your husband equally.... I wasn’t ovulating due to PCOS. We did two cycles of clomid. The second time I did not ovulate so we changed to femara.... After four cycles of ovulation l, I was able to conceive.
I love them [Nurses- VCU Med Center- Richmond]. All of them are in the right profession! I could never work in infertility. I am a nurse myself and it would be so difficult working with women everyday going thru such mental anguish and depression. They are so compassionate and kind when you call with the results of negative pregnancy tests or to tell them your cycle has started.... Dr durso is dr Luicidis partner. I’ve seen her several times and was not a fan.

I have nothing bad to say about him. He’s been the best. He’s never negative. He always gives me hope even on bad days. He is easy to get in touch with. Always pleasant. He talks to you and your husband equally. He remembers exactly who you are and your story.
He can always make you laugh no matter what you are going thru. And he knows when to let you cry.

With my first child I wasn’t ovulating due to PCOS. We did two cycles of clomid. The second time I did not ovulate so we changed to femara. After four cycles of ovulation l, I was able to conceive.
Currently, I have been able to reverse my PCOS with weight loss. I have been been ovulating on my own since April 2017. We have also used femara to boost ovulation. When that didn’t work, we attempted iui in September and November. My husband and I took a break for the holidays and ended up buying a house. We can only afford iui one more time and we have been waiting to be stress free before we try again

It’s also quiet and feels private which I appreciate....Courtney and Christine are amazing! They will answer any question, big or small. They make you feel every question is a valid question and they show compassion always. They always call back the same day....I did the guarantee program with ICSI which cost $22,000.
How was your experience with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Even though we haven’t brought a baby home (yet), I have been very happy with our care by Dr Lucidi. He has been sensitive and truthful. He has also offered hope balanced by reality. He has made efforts to adjust my appointments and schedule to be sure he was the doctor I would see. One point that could matter to others: he has not significantly altered our course of treatment and I don’t know if another regimen could possibly result in better results. VCU has specially priced medications which results in HUGE savings in comparison to other clinics. This has been big for us since we have done multiple rounds of injectiable medications.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Ask what the plan would be if you don’t respond to treatment as expected. What other courses of treatment might be options.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?

Describe the protocols Scott Lucidi used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
My dose of Gonal-F was increased when I did not respond well to IVF drugs. We cancelled prior to egg retrieval based on poor response (few follicles and low estradiol). The second round, I started on the higher dose of Gonal-F and added Menopur. The same regiment was used for our third round. The results were not all that different in terms of follicles produced for all 3 rounds.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center.
I did the guarantee program with ICSI which cost $22,000. The covers up to 6 IVF cycles and money is returned if it does not result in a live birth. Medications run $500-700/ovarian stimulation, and anesthesia is $500/egg retrieval. IUIs cost about $500/cycle.
Describe Scott Lucidi's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
We transferred all embryos produced on Day 3 because I had so few.
I was kind of surprised by how insensitive she [Dr. Nancy Durso] could sometimes be, or that she wouldn't realize that certain things would be upsetting. For example, she told me that my ovaries might have cancer cells, which of course really upset me -- but she seemed surprised when I started to cry. I think she would genuinely try to connect with me, but that just isn't her strength. The nurses at VCU are amazing. I learned to rely on them for the emotional support.
The costs for each IUI round [at VCU Medical Center] were around $550 or so. We did the IVF Guarantee program with ICSI, which gives us 6 full cycles for $22,000, and we get a refund if this doesn't result in a baby. We still have to pay $500 for anesthesia for egg retrievals, and we pay for medicine out of pocket. With the VCU pharmacy, meds are around $700... The clinic has a very calm atmosphere. I hear from friends who have done IVF in bigger cities and have described how stressful sitting in the waiting room is. That is definitely not the case at VCU.
How was your experience with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
I started seeing Dr. Durso after my husband and I weren't having any luck. We didn't know what was wrong, and Dr. Durso was able to figure out that I actually have pretty bad endometriosis. She did a laproscopic surgery, and I thought she did a really good job with that. After doing some research, I learned that the biggest concern with that procedure is the risk that the surgeon could damage your ovaries, or cause some other complication that will affect your fertility. I found that Dr. Durso did a great job, and I really appreciate that.
The surgery didn't have any complications, and gave her more info about what was going on with my body. She adjusted my plan after that, and advised that we would almost certainly need to pursue IVF.
We did a number of rounds of IUIs. Dr. Durso performed 3 of those, and based on scheduling issues (holidays, weekends), another doctor and a NP at VCU performed the others.
We did one cycle of IVF with Dr. Durso. We were able to retrieve a decent number of eggs, but only half of them were mature. Half of those fertilized, and all of the fertilized eggs stopped dividing. This wasn't great, and apparently my eggs might have some problems. I don't think Dr. Durso did a good job talking to us about this. We had already been planning to try more IVF cycles, but she didn't want to change any of the plan. My sense was that she didn't believe that she could get us pregnant. That was the reason we decided to change up and work with someone new.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Write down questions and ask questions. Dr. Durso isn't great about telling you information. But, if you ask her questions, she'll answer them fully. It's more like she just doesn't think about bringing things up on her own.
Ask questions about what is going on with you, what she recommends and why, and whether there are other plans that you could try. Make sure that you know the practical things.
Also -- make sure that if you're going to do IVF, that she actually puts you on the schedule!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center?
Dr. Durso is kind of awkward. That didn't bother me too much -- I don't need a doctor that I want to hang out with, just a doctor that can get me pregnant.
Given that she's been treating fertility problems for so long, though, I was kind of surprised by how insensitive she could sometimes be, or that she wouldn't realize that certain things would be upsetting. For example, she told me that my ovaries might have cancer cells, which of course really upset me -- but she seemed surprised when I started to cry. I think she would genuinely try to connect with me, but that just isn't her strength.
The nurses at VCU are amazing. I learned to rely on them for the emotional support.
Describe the protocols Nancy Durso used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
For IUI, we did a few rounds using Femara. Those weren't successful.
For the IVF cycle, we did Menopur / Gonal-F, then Ganirilex and HCG trigger shot. This cycle was ok. We got a good number of eggs, although only half of them were mature. Just a note -- I don't have any hormone issues, so I think the above protocol is her "standard".
Describe your experience with your nurse at VCU Medical Center. (Assigned nurse: Christine, Courtney, Kim)
The staff at VCU is simply amazing. They have made this whole infertility ordeal so much better. When I talk to other women with fertility issues, I always urge them to go to one of the VCU doctors simply because the nursing staff will make the whole thing so much better.
Describe your experience with VCU Medical Center.
I've been very happy with VCU. Everyone there, from Amouri and Shawna at reception, to Tanya with the financial stuff, to the nurses, has been great. The clinic has a very calm atmosphere. I hear from friends who have done IVF in bigger cities and have described how stressful sitting in the waiting room is. That is definitely not the case at VCU. Being in a smaller clinic is great. The staff also gets along so well with each other (they seem like a family), and I think that probably creates the great atmosphere.
One thing to be aware of is that VCU does IVF cycles once a month. So all of the patients start the cycle on the same day. That means that you sometimes need to get "on the list" in advance, and that you may have to wait a month or two before you can start. That has been frustrating.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Nancy Durso at VCU Medical Center.
The costs for each IUI round were around $550 or so.

when our IVF results weren’t as expected, we didn’t receive further counseling. Very little and very vague follow-up on VERY unexpectedly poor outcomes....We had our ups and downs with Lucidi for the years he treated us - ultimately I would say he was “fine” ...Lucidi never gave us any indication that we would have a failed round of IVF. Then, when our round did fail, there was no discussion on how this happened, no recommendations for additional follow-up or genetic counseling.
The weakness [at VCU ] to us has been the lab, and when we got such bad results, all of a sudden, the communication was very vague and stopped abruptly.... they don’t have a lab director on site - their lab director runs labs across the country. ...Christine was absolutely amazing. She always made me feel cared for. She answered every question I had without making me feel like I was ridiculous or taking too much of her time.
How was your experience with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Their lab is brand new (less than one year) and other doctors have told us they suspect that our bad IVF outcome resulted from Dr. Lucidi using stimulation practices that aren’t current and the lab not being well-established.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Go to the other practice in town. We had our ups and downs with Lucidi for the years he treated us - ultimately I would say he was “fine” and the nurses were exceptional - but starting down the path with Lucidi is the fast way to lose a lot of money. The competing practice in town at least offers a 6-round IVF guarantee. With Lucidi’s practice, without insurance, you’ll pay $20k per round. With the competitors, you’ll pay more upfront, but if you don’t have success, you’ll get a refund of the bulk of the expense.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?

Christine was absolutely amazing. She always made me feel cared for. She answered every question I had without making me feel like I was ridiculous or taking too much of her time. She held my hand for 30 minutes while I cried during our first miscarriage. And she called me numerous times to check on me after my second miscarriage.
Describe your experience with VCU Medical Center.
The weakness to us has been the lab, and when we got such bad results, all of a sudden, the communication was very vague and stopped abruptly.
The strength was Christine.
I would tell a new patient not to do IVF with this clinic until the lab was up and running for at least 2 years to get established. Also, they don’t have a lab director on site - their lab director runs labs across the country. So, I didn’t feel like they had the expertise at the ready for our IVF attempt to be successful.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center.
Approx $20,000 for IVF fees, including $600 for drugs, and PGS
Describe Scott Lucidi's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
We never got to embryo transfer. We sent 6 embryos for PGS, and all were unexpectedly abnormal.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at VCU Medical Center.
We had 18 follicles. 11 eggs retrieved - lower than what we were expecting. 10 fertilized - we were pleased. 6 sent off for PGS - still pretty pleased. Of the 6, all were abnormal, all for different reasons. We had no abnormalities in our carrier screenings, and we have a healthy child - so our very abnormal results were completely unexpected.
Lucidi never gave us any indication that we would have a failed round of IVF. Then, when our round did fail, there was no discussion on how this happened, no recommendations for additional follow-up or genetic counseling. We asked for financial support to try another round (similar to the competitor deal in town), and were denied.
Dr. Lucidi is nice. He takes his time answering questions but he tends to give you different statistics at each visit which is annoying. I feel he could be more blunt instead of always saying I'm sure you'll get pregnant we just have to try all the options...Have your questions written out before hand so you can ask them all while you are there because he isn't very fast to respond if you call or message...He does not monitor labs with IUIs. He does not monitor progesterone levels.
The office staff [at VCU] including Dr.Lucidi always treat me like a human. They all know my name and greet me upon entering the clinic. They tell me they are praying for me and keep me in their thoughts.. They take their time to answer my questions...The new building is pretty nice and very clean. The waiting room is very small but exam rooms are nice size. Front desk staff could be friendlier..The nurses Courtney and Christine with Dr. Lucidi office are wonderful. They are compassionate and great listeners. They always get back to you quickly and never make you feel like a nusaince.

The office staff including Dr.Lucidi always treat me like a human. They all know my name and greet me upon entering the clinic. They tell me they are praying for me and keep me in their thoughts. Over the last year with our multiple failed cycles they have always encouraged us to keep trying and been there to listen to me cry. They never make me feel like I'm bothering them. They take their time to answer my questions.
Describe the protocols Scott Lucidi used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
For the IUIs we had already tried Clomid and femara with my previous obgyn and had 1 miscarriage and 1 failed iui so dr.lucidi said we needed to graduate to injectables. I have pcos and was diagnosed with anovulation. We did Gonal-F for all my IUIs and with my ivf. Avg dose for IUIs was 125/night. Avg dose for Ivf was 250/twice a day. Estrogen levels checked every other day during ivf cycle. Ultrasound first day of cycle then on day 5 and day 8 with IUIs. With ivf ultrasounds were every other day. He does not monitor labs with IUIs. He does not monitor progesterone levels. Doxycycline taken day of retrieval and for 5 days post. Progesterone gel starting day of retrieval through 10th week of pregnancy. He does beta hcg 9dp5dt

Describe the costs associated with your care under Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center.
I work for the same company so I was lucky to get $5000.00 of infertility treatment so all my IUIs were covered. For ivf I paid $3447.00 and for my embryo transfers I will have to pay $180.00 per ultrasound and $250.00 for the transfer. Dr lucidi clinic gets a discount at their pharmacy so medications were a steal. Paid $790 For entire ivf cycle meds
Describe Scott Lucidi's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
Dr. Lucidi is pretty adamant about encouraging only 1 embryo transfer at a time. However he is understanding and will allow 2 if multiple failed cycles in past.
He's [Dr. Scott Lucidi] always as gentle as possible when performing ultrasounds, IUIs, and embryo transfers. He always takes the time to answer any questions I have and explains any risks and options fully. He's very upfront and does not sugarcoat potential issues. He performed a laparoscopy procedure prior to my first pregnancy attempt and I had zero complications from it.
It [VCU Medical Center Fertility] is a teaching facility so you'll be asked whether the residents and medical students can be present; at times they will participate in your care (e.g., perform an ultrasound) so be sure to say no to the nurse if you'd prefer they do not. It is a women's health clinic and not a fertility clinic, so there are children in the waiting room...The VCU patient portal is great. If I have blood work done by 9a, I'm typically able to see all my lab results by noon. I have had one or two issues with billing but the business manager has taken care of them when I contact her.

Ask as many questions as you can and listen closely to the answers even if it is not what you're hoping to hear
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
I saw Dr. Lucidi (or his NP Jeannette Brown when he's out of town) at every visit. Dr. Lucidi, Jeannette and the nurses Courtney and Christine are always welcoming and warm and take the time to answer any questions I may have. The nurses always return my calls in a timely manner.
Describe the protocols Scott Lucidi used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
#1: HSG, laparoscopy for suspected blocked tube, unmedicated IUI timed via OPK sticks; resulted in one child
#2-5: HSG before #2, unmedicated IUIs timed via OPK sticks
IVF #1: Gonal-F, Ganirelix, and Ovidrel which I believe is his starting point for a normal AMH value. A week between first two ultrasounds, then every other day until retrieval (4 ultrasounds total). 29 eggs retrieved, 23 were mature and 22 fertilized with ICSI. Resulted in 10 day 5 blasts, 1 fresh transfer, 9 frozen.
FET #2 & 3: Natural IVF so transfer synced to my unmedicated ovulation. Requires 3 ultrasound (day 3, day 11 or so, 3 days after ovulation) plus progesterone check 3 days after ovulation. Transfer done on day 5 after ovulation.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at VCU Medical Center.
Courtney and Christine are the nurses I interacted with. They always great me warmly with a smile. When Dr. Lucidi does not have residents and medical students with him, they remain in the room during all procedures. They return all calls and pass on messages in a timely manner especially when I leave voice messages. They celebrate my successes and commiserate with my disappointments.
Describe your experience with VCU Medical Center.
The clinic is in a easy to get to location near Stony Point Mall. It has a lab and pharmacy on site which are very convenient. The meds for my IVF cycle were under $500 thanks to the pharmacy and VCU offsetting the cost. The VCU patient portal is great. If I have blood work done by 9a, I'm typically able to see all my lab results by noon. I have had one or two issues with billing but the business manager has taken care of them when I contact her. Describe the costs associated with your care under Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center.
Self pay IUIs were approx $250. Self pay ultrasounds were $180. IVF cycle was over $3K. Self pay FET was $325. IVF takes place at Virginia IVF which have separate costs (~$22K for single ICSI IVF cycle, ~$2600 for FET cycle).
Dr. Lucidi was fantastic. He made us feel like we mattered...He will strongly recommend transferring 1 embryo but will listen to your concerns and adjust as needed...He was attentive to my bodies response and increased my dosages as needed. He always fit me in for appointments even last minute. He followed my pregnancy until 12 weeks and until I was fully off of meds....I could call anytime and never felt like a bother. He even came in on his day off to do our embryo transfer...
VCU as a whole makes it difficult to get in touch with your Doctor. Dr. Lucidi's nurses gave me a direct line which took care of that problem, but without it communication would have been difficult.... They were quick to respond to my messages, calmed my nerves, and reassured me at every step....Meds for IVF are very reasonably priced, if you use their pharmacy....The embryo retrievals and transfers are done at Virginia IVF which is a seperate cost.

For our IVF I was put on gonal-f only. With my age he said that gonal-f alone should give us good results. It took some time for my E2 levels to rise and he upped my dose during stims. I stimmed for 12 days, and egg retrieval was 14 days after starting stims. I used ganireleix starting around day 10, and triggered with HCG. I have PCOS and 64 eggs were retrieved. I was monitored closely for OHSS which I developed a mild case of. My E2 was monitored closely for signs of OHSS as well.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at VCU Medical Center.
Courtney and Christine were amazing! I literally can not say enough good things about those two. They were quick to respond to my messages, calmed my nerves, and reassured me at every step.

My insurance covered the first 5,000 dollars in expenses. The embryo retrievals and transfers are done at Virginia IVF which is a seperate cost.
Describe Scott Lucidi's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at VCU Medical Center.
Dr. Lucidi was very opinionated on single embryo transfer at my age. We transferred 1 for our fresh transfer and after listening to my concerns agreed to transfer 2 for our FET. I am currently pregnant with a singleton.
Dr. Lucidi is very direct and straightforward, which might appeal to some patients. However, I found his lack of bedside manner unnerving given how emotional the situation was for my husband and I. Appointments were quick and he answered our questions very scientifically before moving on to the next patient. He always seemed like he needed to be somewhere else, and the VCU students and attendants who often accompanied him were similarly brusque and unfriendly.
The nurses [at VCU] were very friendly, but my interactions with them were usually brief. The nurse practitioner who actually did the procedure handled it very well and helped me feel comfortable. There was some confusion when we were given my husband's test results on the phone and we were told we would have to do IVF. Lucidi later told us we could try IUI, and I'm not sure if it's because we asked for an alternative to IVF or because there was a miscommunication with the nurse.
How was your experience with Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Although he was always professional and courteous, Dr. Lucidi often seemed rushed, and he didn't act very sympathetic to what we were going through. I know he's been dealing with couples like myself for years, but I would have appreciated more kindness. When I had specific questions, he answered them directly, but he offered very little other information. Sometimes I was confused by his explanations for why he did certain things (like had me take Clomid despite my regular ovulation), but I blame myself for not asking him to explain more clearly. When I actually underwent the IUI procedure, I was almost relieved that the nurse practitioner handled it because Lucidi made me feel rather uncomfortable. When I did become pregnant, he had me come in weekly for ultrasounds without explaining why, and I discovered later that my insurance didn't cover all of the ultrasounds.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center?
Be prepared with questions, because he'll rarely offer information without prodding. And if good bedside manner is important to you, find someone else.

Describe the protocols Scott Lucidi used in your cycles at VCU Medical Center and their degree of success.
After diagnosing us with male factor infertility, Dr. Lucidi told us there was nothing we could do to improve my husband's sperm (morphology was the main issue). Although we were first told that we would need to go directly to IVF, subsequent tests of my husband's sperm showed improvement, so Lucidi agreed to let us try IUI first. He said our chances of success were less than 10 percent. I was ovulating regularly, but he had me take Clomid for a few days (not sure why) and come in the day after a positive OPK test for the procedure. He was not present for the procedure.

I often had to wait awhile for my appointments. When signing in and seeing that someone else had the same appointment time slot as me, I was told that they commonly double book patients.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Scott Lucidi at VCU Medical Center.
Most of my treatment was covered by insurance, except a few ultrasounds and the IUI procedure itself. I think the procedure cost about $400.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at VCU Medical Center.
We were told that my husband should take a semen sample to the lab, and that Lucidi's office would set up a drop-off time. He collected the sample and rushed to the office in order to get it to them within the allotted time. When he got there, they said they weren't expecting him and they had no record of him. As the minutes ticked by and the sperm became less viable, they tried to reach Lucidi's office while refusing to take his sample. Finally, they figured out the mess and agreed to take the sample with just a few minutes to spare. His numbers from that sample were much lower than subsequent tests, and I wonder if this episode had something to do with that.
For the majority of my time with Dr. Lucidi, I always felt like I understood everything that he was recommending and he would always answer my questions. There was only one time in the 1.5 years I saw him that I didn't completely understand why he didn't do something...But other than that one instance, I was able to call with questions and he would always take the time to clearly explain things to me. So much so that when I was trying to understand how many embryos to thaw, he drew out a diagram in preparation to my office visit so he could fully explain his recommendation and the changes for each of the possible routes we could go.
The nursing staff [at VCU Medical Fertility] quickly became friends and I felt so much love and compassion from them. They were amazing....I got into appointments on time, they were organized and I very much appreciated the flexibility that they had in getting me in for appointments...He [Dr Scott Lucidi] always took the time to answer questions and explain things in a way that I would understand.

For all patients of any infertility doctor, get to know as much as you can and ask questions so that you feel comfortable with the course of treatment the doctor is recommending.

I tried to do injectable hormones with an IUI but I was hyper-stimulated pretty quickly. He recommended that I go straight to IVF because he wasn't confident that we could get the dosage right. I was comfortable with that but ended up becoming hyper-stimulated during my IVF injections phase and wasn't able to do a fresh transfer. Looking back I wish he would have put me on a lower dosage from the start and decreased it quicker so I wouldn't have to wait to do the transfer, but I think he made the best decisions he could at the time. I was thankful that he didn't risk doing a transfer when I was hyper-stimulated.

Because my insurance didn't cover anything, I had to pay all out of pocket. IUIs were $250, plus the sperm donation was $200. IVF had a set cost with the Doctor around $3500, and then the IVF clinic he partnered with cost $8000. In addition, we had to pay $500 for the anesthesiologist for the retrieval surgery.

There was one time that my lab slip didn't make it up to the lab and I had to circle back with the nurse to get that paperwork through.
I had a great experience with Dr. Lucidi. By the time I saw him I was an experienced infertility patient so I felt confident with the clinic, process and next steps. The only issue I had was that sometimes he would describe the pain/discomfort to be expected with certain procedures and it was not the case. My previous MD was a woman and better able to prepare me for what to expect...
Excellent nursing staff [at VCU Medical Center] and NP who often saw me for monitoring appointments and then through my 12 week scan before going to the regular OB. When I had my miscarriages, they felt my pain and when I had successes they celebrated with me. Wonderful team...I experienced short wait times and great customer service at every appointment. It felt like a very personal experience. I also noted that there were never children/babies in the waiting room which was not requested anywhere but appreciated

I was able to go with the usual protocol for my third retrieval - brith control for a couple of weeks and then Gonal F and Menopur for about 10 days before adding PIO injections. I did an ERA that showed I needed an extra 12 hours and was able to do that for my successful transfer.

I was very lucky that I worked for VCU at the time and most of the services were covered including all ultrasounds and meds. I had outside testing like ERAs that were not covered. I now have different insurance and was told OOP for a transfer will be $3500
