Attention to Detail

Attention to detail is on a 1 - 10 scale, and is scored based on the rate, and severity, of errors committed by the clinic according to the patients.

For example, a severe error might be failing to inform a patient of critical information, while a small error might be failing to call a patient with results.

CDC Success Rates

This is the most recent data from the CDC. The CDC cautions that it should not be used to compare doctors and clinics. This data represents the outcomes of IVF cycles when using a person's own eggs.

For more information please see our FAQs.

Where you see a “?” on the chart, a clinic has done fewer than 20 cycles in this category and age range, so the CDC says showing percentages from this small data set would be misleading and unreliable.

How was your experience with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Rowan is very good at answering questions and explaining the latest research and reasons behind something he recommends. He also always took our preferences into account and was willing to do things differently than recommended if we wanted to. He can occasionally come across as a bit hurried or blunt but is never rude or unfriendly and I appreciated his candor.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Always ask any questions you have and don’t keep quiet just because he is very confident or assertive about something! He will listen to your preferences!
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Rowan was always friendly and positive toward me and did not ever make me feel ignored or uncared for. Personality wise he wasn’t especially warm, but he always seemed to genuinely care and was professional and kind.
Describe the protocols Shon Rowan used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
Because of my AMH level and my risk of OHSS Dr. Rowan prescribed a low stimulation protocol for my egg retrieval. I did have mild OHSS but it wasn’t an issue since we weren’t planning to do a fresh transfer anyway. After multiple failed FETs he recommended doing a hysteroscopy and was able to remove a small uterine cyst. When also recommended a uterine biopsy to test my receptivity and this resulted in changing my progesterone timing with transfers and resulted in a successful transfer!
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: IVF Coordinator Karen Merryman)
Karen was always professional and kind. She was also easy to get in contact with, however her written communication skills were not strong so at times when not at the clinic when I would contact her via email things were not always cleared up and sometimes became more confusing. For the most part all the nursing staff were extremely caring and kind and empathetic!

Describe the costs associated with your care under Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I had insurance that covered almost everything. I paid out of pocket for embryo thawing ($400 each time) and $500 per year for the embryo storage fee.
Describe Shon Rowan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I really appreciated how Dr. Rowan educated us on all the options and was very supportive of our decision to only do single embryo transfers.

One time I caught a timing error on my med protocol sheet I was given. I contacted the IVF Coordinator about it and there was some confusion in trying to sort it out but eventually we figured out she had made a mistake and were able to get it corrected in time.

At all of my appointments I felt well cared for. All of the procedures were well explained. Dr. Rowan is very matter of fact so much so at times his bed side manner suffers. At each appointment I came prepared with questions and he was very patient with me and answered all of them. ... For 10 days follistimAQ 225 iu once a day, menopur 75iu once a day. The last 5 days Ganirelix 250 mcg with the other injections. Trigger shot with Chor Gonadot 10,000 unt injection. 9 eggs were retrieved, 4 were mature, 4 fertilized with ICSI. 1 at day 5 and biopsied for PGS.
One of our 5 day embryos was destroyed during the PGS biopsy. We weren't informed until our follow up appointment a month later. We only had two. ... Karen explained the IVF process very well. She helped when were having issues with the pharmacy and PGS testing. At times she was too busy to return calls but I think that was do to a busy time period before the lab closed. My husband did not like her. He thought she was rude when explaining options.

Dr. Rowan was polite but not warm mannered...not the type of doctor to ask about you or how you are doing...comes in and does his job then leaves...I would have chosen another doctor at the clinic if I had known how unfriendly he is...Before my retrieval he suggested canceling due to my low follicle numbers, saying that he was surprised about the outcome.

How was your experience with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Rowan was polite but not warm mannered. He is not the type of doctor to ask about you or how you are doing. He comes in and does his job then leaves. He was direct about what he was doing and what he expected. There had been visits where I felt I was mislead to have a better outcome due to my age. Before my retrieval he suggested canceling due to my low follicle numbers, saying that he was surprised about the outcome. Although we knew my amh was low, I believe he thought due to my age medication protocol was high enough when it may not have been. During my transfers, he was very gentle and the procedure was done quickly. Unfortunately during my second transfer, he seemed rushed and removed the catheter before we had the all clear, which upset me, because what if it wasn’t all clear. Overall I think he is a good doctor, knows what to look for in ultrasounds and knows how to do the task at hand, but I would have chosen another doctor at the clinic if I had known how unfriendly he is.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Advice I would give a patient would be to advocate for yourself especially if you think the decision being made is incorrect.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
My doctor does not have a warm bedside manner. He is in and out ,straight forward.
Describe the protocols Shon Rowan used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For our egg retrieval, we did a month of birth control, I did 225 units of Gonal f, 75 units if Menopur, and towards the end about 3 days of Ganerliex. We triggered with Ovidrel and had the retrieval two days later. For my first transfer I did 1cc of progesterone in oil every night. And for my second transfer I did Estrace vaginally every night, baby aspirin, and 2cc of progesterone in oil in the morning.
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Karen and Holly)
During my egg retrieval prep and procedure, my first nurse Holly was awesome. She listened to my needs, always asked how I was doing, made me feel comfortable, and was always so nice. For my transfers my nurse Karen was friendly and professional. She always questioned decisions I wanted to make and argued with my about the amount of embryos I wanted to transfer. She was very organized and the busiest nurse, which made it difficult to reach her at times. Overall I believe she always had good intentions and wanted the right decision to be made.
Describe your experience with West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The staff was always friendly and had my taken back in a room very quickly. It was always clean and nurses were happy to help. I liked that I was able to be billed and make payments rather then up front costs. I have no complaints about the clinic itself.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
My monitoring appointments always went smoothly and they were able to work with my schedule. They never hurt and made sure it was done quickly. There were some instances where I was left in a room for about 20 minutes before seeing someone.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
My largest cost incurred due to medication expenses. Being on a higher medication protocol made it very difficult to come up with funds where the insurance did not cover.
Describe Shon Rowan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The doctor himself did not have a preference, but my nurses did. During my first transfer of two embryos, he seemed surprised we were transferring two, as if he may have been updated that moment about it.

Dr. Rowan is very straight forward but does not stray from clinic protocols. They are very adamant on sticking to those specific protocols and do not budge on that...I did ask for autoimmune testing before my FET with him (embryo from another clinic/doctor/retrieval). He declined and stated that they weren't really seeing results from auto immune protocols. I was later tested at another clinic, with another RE, and found NKa. The autoimmune-protocol FET with that clinic resulted in live birth...
Clinic [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] is small. It's rare that I call and have to leave a voicemail...Parking can suck sometimes but there's a complex across the street. Appointments are easily attainable. Their app is also extremely user friendly but could use some work in terms of adding medications and video visits...If i ask a question I don't wait long for an answer. I also have email access to the coordinator and financial counselor which is really helpful...
How was your experience with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Rowan is very straight forward but does not stray from clinic protocols. They are very adamant on sticking to those specific protocols and do not budge on that. He is open to talking things through with you and meeting in the middle, especially if you are self-advocating and have research to back it up. He is very personable but professional. So far my experience with his has been good. The only downfall I can add is that he doesn't call with bad news, he has a nurse deliver that news. I've dealt with other clinics and never had that experience. This is an area he could improve on. This is an update to my previous review: he did not know when to call it with my cycle and my embryos paid the price. Having been seasoned with IVF, I know you truly can't predict an outcome, however, some more transparency with what we knew at the time could've avoided this cycles outcome in my non-medical opinion. I did ask for autoimmune testing before my FET with him (embryo from another clinic/doctor/retrieval). He declined and stated that they weren't really seeing results from auto immune protocols. I was later tested at another clinic, with another RE, and found NKa. The autoimmune-protocol FET with that clinic resulted in live birth. My IVF cycle resulted in a poor graded 7-day embryo out of 11; 7 mature. I had a feeling the Menopur would interfere with the quality given PCOS. What I didn't realize at the time is that we were stimming preantral follicles with no buffer med. My egg quality was shot from the start. This is something that I absolutely believe an RE should've been able to pick up on. I was willing to use that as a lessons learned cycle and do another retrieval there with a different protocol. However, things transpired since that made me decide to move to another clinic. Dr. Rowan could be a great doctor if he decided to move away from the white-paper and focus on the patient. I do believe this is WVU driven as well.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Do your research and don't hesitate to ask questions. If you're advocating for care or deviations have concrete reasoning prior to asking for things. If you think it's wrong, go with your gut.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Rowan has really good bedside manners. He is professional but not stuffy- he is very lax and has a good sense of humor. He doesn't make you feel like you are insignificant nor does he rush you through questions or out of appointments (unless he has a student). Not sure what the deal was with Karen, but he was way easier to talk with when she wasn't around. She would rush him out of appointments/ scans. It also seemed like he was never updated on things she would commit him to.
Describe the protocols Shon Rowan used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
For my FET I was on 8 days of birth control pills, 2 weeks of estrace, and 5 days of PIO. The rationale is that the protocol has good outcomes in comparison to others. Birth control times vary from 7-14 days. Egg Retrieval: Gonal 150iu 2x/ day, Menopur 75iu 2x/ day, Ganirelix 250 mcg & Novarel 10k iu. No rationale. I was too suppressed upon stimming. 11 retreived, 7 mature, 1 poor/fair day-7 blastocyst, PGT normal & still frozen. For comparison: Retrieval #1 was Gonal, Cetrotide, Pregnyl & Lupron combo trigger (4 day-5 blasts, Excellent quality, no PGT). Retrieval #3 was Birth Control down regulation , Lupron overlap, HGH, Gonal, Menopur & HCG trigger. Also had LH monitoring. (3 5-day blasts, good/excellent quality, 2 PGT normal).
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Karen and Holly)
Karen and the nursing team are great. They're all friendly and very responsive. If i ask a question I don't wait long for an answer. I also have email access to the coordinator and financial counselor which is really helpful. This is an update to my previous review: Karen showed compassion when my FET failed and tried to hear me out when my IVF retrieval results were given. I asked about doing another retrieval to bank embryos before doing a transfer. She said that's something they could do. I asked to add Lupron and possibly HGH to the protocol. Again, she said that's something they could do and after I answered why I wanted to add those meds, she talked in circles about how it may or may not work (again, seasoned IVF patient- outcomes are outcomes, right?). I told her I appreciated her opinion and that I wanted a consult with Dr. Rowan to go over the outcome and what we could do better. She asked why, so I explained that I was planning on asking for the protocol additions listed, an autoimmune panel, a hysteroscopy (I have had endometriosis surgery in the past, along with 1 FET miscarriage and 2 failed implantation FETs). I also explained that those were wishlist items; I could go without some but I was adamant on a different protocol and autoimmune testing. I was told no and that they "can't fix egg quality." I said okay, and took my previously scheduled consult with a physician that was coming out of retirement that believed in the efficacy of immunological factors. This doctor was originally going to take my consult and then consult with Dr. Rowan on my behalf. However, after that conversation with Karen, I decided to cycle elsewhere.
Describe your experience with West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Clinic is small. It's rare that I call and have to leave a voicemail (literally once in 5 months). Parking can suck sometimes but there's a complex across the street. Appointments are easily attainable. Their app is also extremely user friendly but could use some work in terms of adding medications and video visits.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
With some preliminary testing and FET cycle roughly $1500.00 including meds and transferring my embryos to that clinic. For my upcoming IVF cycle it will be roughly $3,000 including meds but not including genetic testing on embryos as i have not received that information yet. Update: They used RGI for PGT results. The cost was $450 for 2 embryos, $200 per embryo thereafter.
Describe Shon Rowan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Strong preference of 1. Ultimately it was my decision though.
What specific things went wrong at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
  • Lost results
Describe the specific things that went wrong at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I had lab work done at an outside clinic. I provided the results directly to the clinic as they stated they never received the results. Instead of them adding the results provided, they just reran the lab when I was getting other lab work done at the clinic.

He [Dr. Rowanwas by our side every step of the way and very personable. He was very compassionate when we did not have the viable pregnancy with IVF...He listened to our concerns and helped us make the right choices...I know with IUI we did an ultrasound on day 3 of my period started meds day five for the next five days and then came in for another ultrasound. Then took shot to ovulate then had the IUI the day after.
[WVU Center for Reproductive Medicine nurses were] Very attentive to details and available at all times by cell phone...The staff at the clinic are amazing and we couldn’t be more happy with the bedside manner and they way we had been treated...We paid around $12,000 out of pocket for IVF and insurance only paid for $4,000. So if we did this again it would be $16,000.

I have had 11 IUI and one IVF and one dc lap surgery. Honestly I don’t remember all the doses of the meds. I know with IUI we did an ultrasound on day 3 of my period started meds day five for the next five days and then came in for another ultrasound. Then took shot to ovulate then had the IUI the day after. The IVF was very detailed and I can’t remember the details of drugs and doses and times.

We only had one good embryo out of 14 or so that they retrieved. Which that was heart breaking for us so they could only transfer one. But we did talk about if we had more to do two.

[Dr. Shon Rowan was] Quite but answered questions asked. He was kind to pick up my case after completed initial consult with other physician (he went on medical leave)...Used a birth control for cycle before, follistim, and menopur with hcg trigger. Had good results with retrieval. Did not include a lot of extras everything based on solid research and not experimental which is a good and bad thing.
[nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] Would call/respond at any time or place. Very dedicated to her job but I felt at times she was so busy that mistakes occurred. Overall, I felt she did an excellent job (just felt she needed an assistant)...Strengths: communication, compassion, treated like a human, availability, embryologist discussion and video provided after transfer was amazing!! Weakness: lack of trying different approaches when things failed, mistakes make causing unneeded stress, and cost

Only issue I have with this is ivf is so unknown some experimentation is needed if it’s not working. I do not feel we tried anything new after my first failed. My second also failed to implant. Tried new protocol and retrieval with another physician but still failing to implant. So again to many unknowns to rate.
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Karen)
Would call/respond at any time or place. Very dedicated to her job but I felt at times she was so busy that mistakes occurred. Overall, I felt she did an excellent job (just felt she needed an assistant).
Describe your experience with West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Strengths: communication, compassion, treated like a human, availability, embryologist discussion and video provided after transfer was amazing!! Weakness: lack of trying different approaches when things failed, mistakes make causing unneeded stress, and cost
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
it was approx $11000 for retrieval and freeze all without medication, it was approx $3000 for transfers without medication. I don’t recall what I paid for pgs. I pay much less at my current clinic but I have to travel 8 hours and outside monitoring makes it challenging.

I don’t think it effected my results but my second transfer I was told I was transferring a 6 day embryo and I took 6 days of progesterone just to get there transfer day to find out it was a 5 day embryo.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Ask questions. I don't get a lot of information out of him unless I specifically ask questions. I am pretty shy, so that was tough at first, but once I asked a question and saw how responsive and compassionate he was, I was more comfortable asking them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
When not doing an IVF cycle, I very much felt that I was treated as a human. He sat down with me after each appointment and gave me his thoughts and opinions. When doing the IVF cycle, however, I felt I like I never got a chance to speak with him directly.
Describe the protocols Shon Rowan used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
I had multiple surgeries with Dr. Rowan. He had a great bedside manner and would always come speak to me afterwards. I had one canceled IVF cycle where the medication was too low, and that was because they hadn't checked my AMH after a laparoscopy, and they didn't know it had been cut in half. So we did another round with higher doses of medication. I received more eggs than had been expected, but they were poor quality, and only 2 of 6 embryos made it to day 3. One was lower quality, but the other was beautiful. Both were transferred by a different doctor. I don't know the results yet.
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff at this clinic are amazing. They are always so kind and welcoming.
Describe your experience with West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The clinic has the best nursing staff, and I really do like Dr. Rowan. I am comfortable around him, and I think he does his best to try to help me have success. The clinic is extremely crowded when I come in for monitoring appointments in the mornings, but it's not too bad in the afternoons. I got to meet the embryology team last cycle for the first time, and they were also very friendly.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
There was pretty big price increase in March. Transvaginal ultrasound went up by around $130, and level 1 office visits went up by $20. Current costs: Transvaginal ultrasound: $299 Level 1 Office Visit: $99 Total Cost for typical IVF cycle: $11,500
Describe Shon Rowan's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
Dr. Rowan once told me that he recommends only transferring one day 5 embryo for women under 35. They transferred 2 day 3 embryos, and had mentioned transferring 3 if a third one was good enough quality, but there was not a third one.
What specific things went wrong at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?

Even though he [Dr. Rowan] had a large patient load because of a doctor resigning I always felt like he cared about my questions and concerns...he is open to more modern treatments and tests. My first doctor would not do an HSG on me because he stated it was not necessary but Dr. Rowan insisted that it WAS needed and I gladly did it. He always listens to me and does not make me feel like I’m bothering him...We always did either clomid or letrozole every cycle and both of those made me have hot flashes and feel pretty tired.
Right now they [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] are short a specialist so getting a good appointment that fits my work schedule is very hard. I have to take time off work a good bit now. The clinic is very clean and feels like someone’s house and not a clinic...The nurses are very sweet and understanding. You can call them at any time and they will try to answer you then or call you back shortly. I always feel calm talking to them.

We always did either clomid or letrozole every cycle and both of those made me have hot flashes and feel pretty tired. We had one cycle of dexamethasone which i did not like at all! It made my blood pressure go up which made me have a red face and ears and just feel lousy. We had 3 trigger shots. One before each IUI we did which all failed. They didn’t cause any side effects other than my skin was sore and red at the injection site. All medications created 2 good size follicles every cycle but did not result in pregnancy.

Dr. Rowan is a great doctor. He is personable, professional, has great bed side manner, is compassionate and understanding, answers any questions and takes the time to listen to your concerns and try something new if you desire. He is very patient and not only answers my questions, but my husband's as well. We highly recommend him and the facility in general, nothing but great experiences with the drs and the staff there
The clinic [WVU] is somewhat large but clean and cozy . Organized. No complaints on this end. There is an elevator for those that need it, close to the hospital which is nice if needed. Easy to find with plenty of parking available. There are 3 exam rooms and 2 consult rooms plus in the back is the hospital area with beds and equipment

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Take a list of questions and even if you think it's a stupid question, it's your body and you have the final say so. For example, during my day 3 scan , I was having horrible cramps and heavy flow so I declined the transvaginal ultrasound even though he said he would prefer to do it for better quality picture of my uterus. I again declined and he respected my wishes and we did a tummy ultrasound. Was fuzzy but we managed. That made me feel good that he actually listened to me and we made it work one way or the other.

We have done so many oral meds, Injections, procedures and all with no pregnancy. We try one thing for a few cycles and then if that doesn't work we move on to something else. It's always changing based on how your body responds.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The nursing staff is top notch. They are compassionate and just as excited as you to go through this journey. They have cried and laughed with me and always are a pleasure to deal with. Always asking you how things are going and what they can do to help. Wonderful staff!!

Strengths: The providers and staff at this clinic are friendly, knowledgeable, understanding, and very professional. The clinic is a small and private setting, which made me feel more comfortable. Dr. Horowitz is a doctor that genuinely cares and it shows. He is open to trying new methods if one doesn't work. We are undergoing our last timed intercourse cycle before we move on to the hard stuff. He is honest and to the point. Excellent bedside manner and I would recommend him to anyone trying to have a family!...We started with the "easy" stuff (femara, trigger shot, ultrasounds, bloodwork) . If we have another unsuccessful cycle, we will be trying something else.
The clinic [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] is very clean and well organized! It is very welcoming and homey. The rooms are private and everything you need is all on one floor! They are very quick to get you in for an appointment and they are accommodating ! Always very pleasant and laid back which I like because it keeps the stress level down...They have almost become like a family. One day during one of my failed cycles, I had an emotional melt down and got some less than desirable news (I had developed cysts) and I was crying, the nurse pulled me aside and hugged me so hard and was crying with me. That meant so much to me that they actually care

He [Dr. Horowitz] always made sure to talk to me before and after any appointment. He did a wonderful job of explaining things...including drawing pictures and writing everything down. It's hard if your insurance doesn't cover fertility treatments because all payments must be made up front. They [WVU] we very accommodating with appointment times and were very kind and understanding. They were also very discrete when talking with you about your situation. ... I started with taking 1 pill (Femara) for 5 days then doing timed intercourse. We tried this for a few rounds. We were unsuccessful in getting pregnant. Then we bumped it up to 2 pills for 5 days with the same results. Next we added dexamethasone (1 a day for 14 days) along with the femara. Same results. Then we did those pills with an HCG shot. We did one round like this with no success. Last, we did the pills and a series of 3 shots. No success. At this point I stopped for monetary reasons. It had nothing to do with the doctor.

Dr. Horowitz was relatable and compassionate. He throughly explained all treatment processes, risks, and outcomes. He took his time during each visit to ensure that my husband and I knew what would be happening next. I couldn't ask to be under a better doctor's care... That during our next round he would add estrogen to my early Med list to help drive some of those eggs to maturity.
I later miscarried...From there, I received several calls of sympathy from the staff [at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine]. They've been so compassionate along the way. Hugging and consoling. Making me feel as though I'm more than just a patient...We paid for the ivf and frozen embryo transfer all at one time. The cost was $15,300. In addition, we paid $3,000 to reprogenetics for our pgd testing...They are very organized clinic. Everyone truly cares about your wellbeing and is looking at every avenue to make sure that you have a success ful pregnancy and live birth.

He also went through and throughly explained what he thought were our best options the next time we tried IVF.

I'm not sure at the current time. He did tell me that a few of my eggs were not as mature as the numbers stated. A few of them were in the M1 stage. That during our next round he would add estrogen to my early Med list to help drive some of those eggs to maturity.

The nursing staff at why reproductive clinic is incredible. I started going there in April 2016 after my second miscarriage. At first Dr. Toffle was in charge of my case. He ruled out several different causes to what could be leading to my infertility. In June 2016 I fell pregnant again. I was taking progesterone supplements at the time, because he thought this could have been the reason for my miscarriage. I later miscarried July 27. From there, I received several calls of sympathy from the staff. They've been so compassionate along the way. Hugging and consoling. Making me feel as though I'm more than just a patient.

Dr. horowitz is no nonsense. He likes to tell what he knows, how he knows it, and explain how he went through iVF as well so he knows what it is like. He gave me his personal cell phone number and when I called he called me back the very next day. It was nice to be able to speak with him directly when I needed too. Every time we talked about a plan he went over my previous data, drew me some diagrams, gave me the options, then handed me the paper.
The clinic [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] is small and friendly. I know both doctors and all of the nurses. I don't even have to sign in because they all know who I am, my history, and what I am going through. They are caring and compassionate...IVF cycle (transfer and retrieval) $5500 IUI's $400 Ultrasound $150.

Ask questions because he will be happy to answer them.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gary Horowitz at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Horowitz is pretty no nonsense but he knows my back history. He gets very details with the history. He plans his treatments around me as a person and not just statistics. He also talks about his own experience with iVF which was helpful to me.
Describe the protocols Gary Horowitz used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
My first IVF cycle with him we did Follistim, Menopur, and Ganarelix. He put me on a higher dose of Follistim because of my low AMH level. He said while my levels were extremely low, my AFC was decent at 12 so we could still do IVF. He wasn't ready to go to donor eggs. My second cycle we tried estrogen priming with Follistim, Menopur, and Ganarelix. He added in the estrogen to try and get more eggs mature since the first round we retrieved 10 but only 5 were mature. It worked as 10 were retrieved and 8 were mature this time.
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Karen)
Karen is wonderful. She is very organized and either knows the answers to my questions or gets them soon. If I e-mail her I have the answer within a few hours. She calls back right away as well. She gave me her cell phone so I can call at any time.

Dr. Toffle was very straight forward about my treatment. He would draw me a diagram of anything we were doing and list all of the options. He would then give me this paper to take home. At my appointments I always saw him and not a tech or a nurse. He was caring and compassionate. When my cycles didn't work he was sympathetic. I went to him just for monitoring first and even though he wasn't doing my actual medical cycles he still cared about how I was doing and checked in on me.
The clinic [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] is very small. There are only 2 doctors. There are about 6 nurses. I like it here because everyone knows me. When I walk in I don't even have to give my name because they know who I am. I'm a person and not a number. The lab is small and there are only 2 people in the lab. The lab people are both very nice. I know everyone in the place which makes me feel very comfortable.

Go to him soon as I think he'll be retiring soon.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Roger Toffle at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Dr. Toffle recognized me at my appointments and knew my history. He understood what we wanted and didn't treat me like a number. I had a missed miscarriage when I was with him and he wanted to schedule it for Friday but my brother was getting married so he changed his entire schedule to do it that day.
Describe the protocols Roger Toffle used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
We did Letrozole instead of Clomid on my IUI because I had 3 failed Clomid IUI cycles. I couldn't do IVF until the summer so he said it wouldn't hurt anything to try Letrozole and do IUI's with that.
Describe your experience with your nurse at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine. (Assigned nurse: Karen)
Karen is wonderful. She gave me her direct line, her e-mail, and her personal cell phone. She answers my e-mails within a few hours and my phone calls as soon as possible. She was even on vacation once and wrote me back to tell me she'd write when she was back. She's very professional and always gets me any answers I need.

Pcos & anovulation is my diagnosis [by Dr. Shon Rowan]. I had a d&c to get some Scar tissue out. Then we tried letrazole which I did not respond...I felt rushed. Driving 1 hour to the clinic to get to see the doc for less than 5 min was irritating. Alot of the times when seen things were not explained to me unless I pushed for Answers...always shows a plan of action but unless I pushed for Answers it was hard to get answers as to why we were doing certian things or adjusting plans. Strengths would be he seemed knowledgeable weakness would have to be communication.
[Nurses at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine are] One word AMAZING!!! If I had a question or concern they were quick to explain and show compassion. Quick to call in meds and help with mail order medicine. And most of all they knew my name...I was supposed to start meds on a Monday and I was seen on a Friday. However since meds were not called in I could not start prescription...Ultrasound $299...Office visit $175...IUI $212...Sometimes when my doc that I had been seeing wasnt there I had to see someone else and I wasnt comfortable. I felt like they had no idea my plan and what I have been through. As I said before be your own ad

There were times Dr. Horowitz took the time to see what was going on with my cycle. Other times it felt like he was in a hurry and rushed off without answering my questions.... Dr. Horowitz was very friendly. He would always explained everything we needed to know about our plans for each cycle. He got right to the point when explaining to us about our issues when dealing with fertility problems and doing ivf.
Very good people skills. They [WVU] always show empathy and compassion towards patients. Anytime you had a question they would get back to you within that day. Always made you feel comfortable. I would highly recommend this clinic... Everyone was absolutely amazing! They always took them time to make sure you were ok. They could tell if you were having an off day and tried to cheer you up!

Describe Gary Horowitz's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
We were only allowed to transfer one at a time. We wanted to transfer two embryos actually. Only because it’s another $4k each time to do a transfer. In our minds we thought maybe it could’ve worked better and saved us money

Dr. Rowan does a great job at answering my questions and looking into the details of complaints. He is caring... bedside manner is good as he takes time and does not hurry the appointment. gave me hope in that I could still conceive even with my diminishing ovarian reserve. He tried multiple things to get me to ovulate through medications...He is thorough at trying to figure a solution to all problems...I had two cycles of medications starting with Letrozole. when I went back for the US to see if it was working he prescribed me another round of medicine right there at a higher dose to try and induce ovulation. this happened for two cycles.
The clinic [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] is separate from the main campus of the hospital. it is nice and private. warm and inviting and the rooms where plans are discussed are homey feeling and not like a office setting or regular exam room which gives you a more relaxed feel...I am very happy with the nursing staff even on delicate subjects the reassurance and compassion they show are amazing...Dr. Rowan does a great job at answering my questions and looking into the details of complaints.

Our first transfer [with Dr. Richard Meter] went well. Treatment after our baby, was so bad I am seeing another doctor. He couldn't believe that I would want 2 under 2, and was adamant that the risks were astronomical. I was cleared by my primary, my obgyn AND maternal fetal medicine. Everyone on my team feels that I am healthy enough to concerive and that I would only requjre high risk monitoring. It is my understanding dr meter. is on medical leave without any idea on return.
They [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] are rigid on what they will do if you are not an ideal candidate. They seem to be well organized, and I like that a do you does the ultrasound themselves. They communicate well and I love the my chart chats...We went for a second consultation for a sibling and he [Dr. Richard Meter] was very rude that we would want to attempt another pregnancy because I had slightly elevated blood pressure and controlled gestational diabetes

[Dr. Ryan Heitmann has] One of the best bedside manners that I’ve encountered. Always explains everything in complete detail at least once and never leaves you wondering. He made sure my partner and I both felt comfortable and understood the whole process and treatment plan. I’m only on my first medicated cycle with him as my doctor, but I am very hopeful that I will be pregnant soon.
It [West Virginia University Center for RM] is on the smaller side, so I don’t know if they could handle a lot of patients at once. I’ve only been to a few appointments, but so far I love the way they handle everything. Most importantly I don’t feel like I’m being judged like I do at most other places...Everyone was very nice, accommodating and professional.

For my first cycle, we are doing femera 5mg on cycle days 3-7 along with a day 10 ultrasound to determine if hcg shot is needed and plan on using timed intercourse. The reason for starting at a 5 mg dose is because I previously used femera with a different doctor while trying to conceive. I am still in this first cycle so I am unsure of results so far.

Dr Toffle took time to explain everything and was wonderful to work with...you could tell he cared and didn't rush anything when we were there..... He listened and explained everything thoroughly in terms we could understand. He worked with us and made sure to know what we wanted and what our limits were and did everything he could to help us. He was so patient and kind and truly a light in a time that we were struggling to understand why we couldn't get pregnant.
The clinic [WVU Center for Reproductive Med] was very nice. We loved everything about the place. It was clean, privacy was respected, and the staff was amazing. We never had a bad experience ever and they always fit us in (even living an hour and a half away - they were so accommodating)... First, we started with just clomid. It did not react well with my body so we switched to femara. My body responded better to it. We did that for several cycles then included IUI with it. We did IUI twice. It didn't work. Dr Toffle was willing to do a third but we actually chose to pursue adoption and stopped treatments.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I’m not sure how he does it, but Dr. Rowan is one of the most attentive dr’s I have ever had. He is always available to answer questions, and makes sure you understand every aspect of the treatment. I would recommend him to anyone dealing with infertility issues.... First iui we did letrozole for 5 days, and then trigger shot, and an iui. That one ended up failing. Second treatment we did letrozole, steroid, trigger, and iui.
They [West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] are really good at communicating with you throughout the treatments. They explain everything to you in detail each time you are in there. They are quick with getting any type of blood work results to you, and are always available to call if you have any questions or concerns.... The nursing staff is the best. They are always so kind, and show so much compassion.

First iui we did letrozole for 5 days, and then trigger shot, and an iui. That one ended up failing. Second treatment we did letrozole, steroid, trigger, and iui. That resulted in pregnancy, but ended in a miscarriage at 11 weeks 4 days due to a chromosome issue. Third iui was letrozole, and trigger shot, then iui. This one failed, and when we tried to started another iui we found that I had a cyst from the treatment. We are currently taking some time off.

He [Dr. Roger Toffle] legitimately cares about his patients and their outcomes...It took a little time for me to adjust to his bedside manner, but with time, I truly saw what an amazing doctor he was. During my miscarriages, he took amazing care of me. I feel like he is a conservative doctor and doesn't try to move straight to the expensive and risky fertility treatments...He was big on using pills, tracking ovulation and using ultrasounds to track eggs/activity. He always made room in his schedule for any needed appointments.
The nurses are top-notch at this office [West Virginia Center for Reproductive Medicine] . They are so kind and take the best care of the patients. They are there to cry, laugh, joke and support everyone and they legitimately care...There were some delays from lab results one time....they are human so this oversight didn't upset me. I called in, they apologized and we moved on...The clinic is private, clean and perfect for the practice.

He [Dr. Shon Rowan] spoke to you on a level you understood. Every time you went to dr office you would personally see and speak to dr rowan after the U/S or whatever you are having done. When you feel you cant take anymore and have partial melt downs he talks with you and sees what you are wanting to do. He never gave any false hope which for some may not be a positive thing but it helps you understand where you are at and where you stand in your treatment
[The nurses at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine were]...Very well educated with any questions i had when i would call. Typically saw the same nurse but i have a bad memory for names. Very compassionate when they see its not going as it is suppose to...Each IUI cost around 700.00 A sheet was given where it would cost all together with medications for IVF around 14,000 give ot take if by chance any of my medications would be covered. I personally had no coverage for anything including any testing to see where the problem lied with why we werent getting pregnant
How was your experience with Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
On first visit he did tests then sat down and explained everything not being rushed and let you ask whatever questions you may have. After couple IUI fails if he doesnt think its going to work due to unforseen circumstances he didnt waste your money by continually trying and moved to next step. Explained before reasons why he may next be able to retrieve eggs so that you as the patient arent going in knowing you have so many eggs yet he was unable to retrieve. Gives you everything from the beginning and doesnt completely sugar coat what may or may not happen but in a very polite professional kind way!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Shon Rowan at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
If you want a dr that will sit down and speak to you on your level and do all he can but will also tell you when he cant instead of having you go through hoops of medications and failed attempts. But he will also do all he can to get you that baby you want then he is the man you want:)

5 of femara for 2 cycles with shot for timed ovulation for the iui which both failed. 3rd iui was given 7.5 of femara but only side that may have been blocked produced so cancelled after U/S for rest of IUI

I enjoyed seeing him [Dr. Gary Horowitz]-he was very knowledgeable and smart. But I didn't see him at every appointment which then hindered my treatments-because the other drs wouldn't know what he wanted to do next. I had to repeat 2 cycles due to nothing in my chart about out next step...First month was my initial visit with blood work and transvaginal ultrasound. My second and third month I took metformin and letrozole and had timed intercourse. My fourth month I didn't see Dr. Horowitz-but I was ovulating and they ended up doing an IUI-my fifth month we did letrozole, injection and IUI. The sixth month I did letrozole, injection and timed intercourse.
The biggest weakness that I see [at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine] is that no one has reached out to me since they talked to me about IVF. No one has called a broke down the payment options or anything...Anytime I had a question about anything the nurses were all very nice and would return my calls and answer my questions. They were always so nice during my office visits...I enjoyed seeing him [Dr. Gary Horowitz]-he was very knowledgeable and smart. I had to repeat 2 cycles due to nothing in my chart about out next step. Also, when they decided it was time to move on to IVF the grant websites he gave me where no longer up and running.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Gary Horowitz at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
Ask him to write down your next steps if this month fails. So everyone can be on the same page.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Gary Horowitz at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine?
He sat down at each visit and explained things to me-I wish he would have dumb it down a little bit for me to better understand how my body was working-but I liked that he took the time to talk to you
Describe the protocols Gary Horowitz used in your cycles at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
First month was my initial visit with blood work and transvaginal ultrasound. The eighth and nineth month they changed my injection and we did letrozole and IUI. No timed intercourse or IUI resulted into a pregnancy. So, in October they discussed our option as being IVF. They gave me 2 websites to apply for grants that are no longer up. I have not been back since the discussion of IVF

Describe your experience with West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
The biggest weakness that I see is that no one has reached out to me since they talked to me about IVF. No one has called a broke down the payment options or anything. Also, I had coverage with my insurance to cover my IUIs and they have not been covered and the clinic says it is my responsibility to get my insurance to pay which I do not agree with.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Gary Horowitz at West Virginia University Center for Reproductive Medicine.
I had insurance coverage-but my insurance denied all of my IUIs which was 6 of them-they still haven't covered it. The billing says it is my responsibility to get the insurance to pay which I do not agree with. Also, they have never called me any time of details if we would decide to do IVF.
