Dr. Martinez has always been great about explaining every step of the process and not rushing us during appointments. We have had a really hard time through this process (have been able to retrieve eggs, create embryos, but then they never make it to Day 5) and when we've received bad news he shows genuine care and concern. He is the one who will call with both good and bad news. From Day 1 meeting him he made us feel comfortable and that he cared.
[nurse at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey] was wonderful - I called her the vein whisperer. She was the only one able to draw blood from my tiny veins. She was compassionate and took pride in her work...issues with other nurses, specifically after my first retrieval relaying information regarding my results...It felt very unprofessional. I informed Dr. Martinez what happened at our next appointment and he made sure I always got my results directly from him.
How was your experience with Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey?
He is very compassionate and explains the process very well. With each set back we've had, he's taken the time to sit down with us and develop a game plan for the next treatment. A previous doctor I visited made me feel stupid and talked down to me as if I was a child - it was horrible. Not once has Dr. Martinez made me feel anything close to that previous experience.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey?
Don't be afraid to ask questions because he will answer them for you, no matter how silly you think they are.

Describe the protocols Alan Martinez used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey and their degree of success.
Retrieval Cycle 1: Based on my bloodwork, my PCOs and my age, the first cycle was an antagonist cycle. Follistim (150 units), Menopur (1 vial) and Ganirelix. We retrieved 14 eggs, fertilized 10, and 0 embryos made it to Day 5.
Retrieval Cycle 2: The results of the first cycle were a bit of a shock because throughout the first cycle everything went as smoothly as anticipated. Since none of my embryos made it past Day 5, Dr. Martinez changed my protocol to a downregulation cycle to help with the egg quality. Follistim (225 units), Menopur (1 vial), and Lupron. I also started taking 600mg of CoQ10. We retrieved 12 eggs, fertilized 10, and 1 embryo made it to Day 5. We did genetic testing and the embryo was abnormal.
Retrieval Cycle 3: We decided to take some time off since we did Cycle 1 & 2 back to back. Dr. Martinez was understanding of our decision to take time off and thought it would be beneficial to take a break. He recommended continuing with the CoQ10. After a 4 month break, we did Cycle 3. We utilized the same protocol as Cycle 2 because he believed I made less eggs that were of a better quality (based on the 10 fertilized embryo results this was true despite the final one abnormal embryo). We retrieved 17 eggs, fertilized 8 successfully, and 1 embryo made it to Day 5. We did genetic testing and the embryo was normal.
FET 1: Lupron, Estace, Progesterone, Crinone. We just found out our transfer failed. He was upfront in letting us know that 60 - 70% of transfers are successful. We will be pursuing a fourth retrieval cycle once our clinic opens up again.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey. (Assigned nurse: Michelle, Marianella)
Marinella was the main nurse at the Lawrenceville office and she was wonderful - I called her the vein whisperer. She was the only one able to draw blood from my tiny veins. She was compassionate and took pride in her work. I did have issues with other nurses, specifically after my first retrieval relaying information regarding my results. The nurse coordinator Michelle should have made those calls to me directly but instead I had to call the office.
Describe your experience with Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
There are multiple offices and if you work with the Lawrenceville staff be prepared to drive to Eatontown for specific appointments and procedures. The nurses are very attentive (Marianella especially). It might be hard to take to contact specific nurses when you call however.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
It was first come, first serve from 7:00am to 8:00am. I had no problem with this since I always showed up at 7:00am. Depending on the day I could be first in line or fifth in line. I really didn't mind that much.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
Retrieval 1: $17,200
Retrieval 2: $11,547
Retrieval 3 with transfer: $13,637
We paid upfront for a Retrieval and 1 FET which was $17,200. Since we weren't able to do a transfer, we had a credit that rolled over to our second retrieval and then to our third retrieval.
Describe Alan Martinez's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
This has not been an issue since we have never had more than one embryo. Dr. Martinez is most comfortable transferring one - however he is open to doing multiple embryo transfers if the Day 5 embryos are good enough for a fresh transfer but would not necessarily work for a frozen transfer. This works for me.
What specific things went wrong at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey?

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
After my first retrieval, the nurse coordinator failed to call with my embryo results. Dr. Martinez wanted to wait to see how my embryos would develop to Day 6. He told me the nurse would contact me with the results. By 3:00pm no one had called me. I called the office and the nurse transferred me to a lab tech who gave me my results (which were negative). It felt very unprofessional. I informed Dr. Martinez what happened at our next appointment and he made sure I always got my results directly from him.
i know that he [Dr. Alan Martinez] knew who i was every time i was there...would personally call me himself with results. I saw him for every visit. He also is compassionate and caring while still being straight forward and honest- no false hope. He took time to explain everything and to answer any questions i had. went over risk vs benefit and provided me with percentages for my age and liklihood of things working out in my favor. i trust him completely with my care
i was told to stop a medicine and then in the portal was told to continue it [at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey]...[monitoring hours were a] well oiled machine. first come first served between 7am and 8am...mom and pop place. do not feel like a number here. never waited more than 10 mintues. always answered any questions within 24 hours and had use of an online portal that was helpful to see all my info and post non urgent questions

Dr. Martinez took the time to answer our questions and took all of our concerns into consideration during the plan for our retrieval. He made sure we left our appointments feeling empowered with as much information as possible for each step of the process...He was polite, professional,-and answered our questions and concerns. He also did a thorough job in evaluating all potential issues that can affect fertility. He guided us throughout the process of egg retrieval and had a thorough explanation of what to expect when our embryos were fertilized.
The front desk personnel [at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey] are professional, caring, and friendly. They made going in for early morning bloodwork easy and effortless. The staff doing the blood draws were professional and friendly. Our experiences with the nurses during the retrieval procedure were positive. Unfortunately, there were some instances where the staff was not professional, but those issues were addressed and corrected in a timely fashion. Also, the staff could have explained issues related to billing and insurance more clearly and effectively.

Describe the protocols Alan Martinez used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey and their degree of success.
For our retrieval cycle, we used a long protocol. Our stimulating medicines were Gonal-F and Menopur. Dr. Martinez took my AMH level into consideration for my medication dosage, but increased my dosing after my first ultrasound and bloodwork because my ovaries were not responding as they hoped. Prior to the trigger shot (HCG), my ultrasound showed that I had seventeen follicles with a potential of twelve eggs that would be retrieved. After retrieval, we ended with seven total eggs retrieved and, in our post-retrieval consultation, Dr. Martinez explained that we would start with a higher dosage of stim medications to help with follicle production and growth in the future.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
For the most part, they were attentive to our questions and concerns. However, this attribute was not consistent with every member of the nursing staff. Thus, we had some negative experiences that caused us to raise concerns with Dr. Martinez.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
The monitoring appointments were generally well run such that there was not significant wait time for any particular appointment. At most, there were two to three other patients with appointments during that same window. Outside of the one scheduling issue, there were no other appointments that carried a significant wait time.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
The prescribed medications during the retrieval process were paid out-of-pocket for a total cost of about $6,100.00. Our insurance partially covered the IVF cycle itself. The total cost for us that was not covered by insurance totaled roughly $5,150.00, which included assisted hatching and PGS. Our total out-of-pocket cost for our retrieval cycle was $11,250.00. Our transfer medications were around $2,500.00.
Describe Alan Martinez's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
Dr. Martinez recommended a single embryo transfer due to: (1) my age (younger than 38); and (2) my anatomy (I have a bicornuate uterus) which makes it risker to carry multiple s.
What specific things went wrong at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey?
Lost appointments
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
There was a miscommunication that lead to us arriving for an ultrasound that was scheduled by one staff member, but was not on the main schedule for the clinic so that the person performing the ultrasound was aware of that appointment. This issue lead to a significant wait time, but the ultrasound was eventually performed that morning.
Dr. Martinez greeted me by name, and remembered previous conversations we had at each appointment. He also remembered my history between cycles and pregnancies, and didn't have to rely just on my charts...very compassionate and trust worthy doctor. When one of our cycles failed he personally called us to discuss why he thought it failed and what our next steps would be. He provided as much information as I requested and always answered my questions. He made me feel comfortable in his care.
Dr. Martinez is a strength of this clinic [Reproductive Science Center of NJ], Dr. Zeigler is as well. I do think the office can get a little hectic, so as a first time patient it can be overwhelming...It is office policy to implant one embryo for the age bracket I was in. I do believe if I pushed to transfer two, we would have been given that option.

Describe the protocols Alan Martinez used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey and their degree of success.
Dr. Martinez started me on Clomid for my first IUI cycle, he believed this was a good entry level attempt for pregnancy. This is also required by a lot of insurance companies. After my first IUI failed and we had to cancel the second round due to cysts on my ovaries did some digging into my insurance. I found out I was not required to do IUI's prior to IVF, and per my discussions with Dr. Martinez, I knew IVF should be our next approach. Dr. Martinez listened to my reasons and he agreed. I believe Dr. Martinez put me on the best protocol for my history and what we knew about my infertility diagnosis.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
There were a few nurses in the clinic that would see patients. At my first visit with my meds before my IVF cycle, I expected my nurse to review everything, but she never did. It was assumed I knew how to take all of my meds. There were also times the nurses forgot to tell me something passed on from the doctor.

We paid separate for medication at Mandell's Pharmacy.

Describe the protocols Alan Martinez used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey and their degree of success.
When we first came to Dr. Martinez, I had a tubal blockage that I knew I would have to be surgically removed. He explained everything to me, and I felt very confident going into the surgery. Afterwards, I wanted to try to get pregnant naturally (with one fallopian tube remaining), and he never pressured me to start IVF right away. A few months later, we were more mentally prepared to start the IVF process and again, he explained every step and was very patient with us. During our first egg retrieval, we had a very sudden death in the family, which I do think affected our outcome—we had about 9 eggs retrieved and only one embryo that made it to day 5. We did another egg retrieval round and Dr. Martinez tweaked my protocol (I believe it was a long lupron cycle). This time we got 9 eggs again, but 5 made it to day 5, so we had 6 embryos total. We did PGS and had 3 viable embryos after the testing. Our first FET was successful, and I gave birth to a healthy baby boy in 2017.
Now we are trying for our second, with 2 embryos left. We transferred in February, and I did get pregnant, but the pregnancy didn't continue after week 7. Dr. Martinez ran a VERY through pregnancy-loss panel of blood tests, and has tweaked my treatment for the next transfer. We are hopeful that the next FET will be a success!

Describe Alan Martinez's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
Dr. Martinez was/is of the mind that one embryo transferred at a time was the right course of action for us.
Dr. Martinez went as far as writing numerous letters to the VA clinics and health insurance to help us with trying to get coverage...Dr. Martinez takes as much time as needed to cover all the patient's concerns and to get all the info needed to help them...Be ready to wait and work through all the check ups - it is worth the time Dr. Martinez takes...Dr. Martinez decided that our best way to conceive would be through IVF and ICIS and that it would give us the highest chance of working. Before we could start any treatment, he sent me to have my iron and blood checked out to get cleared before starting the procedure.
The nurses [at Reproductive Science Center of NJ] were just as professional and friendly as Dr. Martinez. They took their time and were sensitive towards our feelings and what we were about to go through...Because of our insurance, we were only covered for appointments and testing to see what our chances of getting pregnant alone were. When my husband I and came back to the clinic in 2017 Dr. Martinez was new to us. From the first visit on, we felt comfortable with him and felt like he truly cared about our wellbeing and the outcome. He was understanding, patient, compassionate and kind through my entire cycle with him. When my transfer last year did not turn out successfully, he called multiple times to check on my status and wellbeing. I knew that when we were ready to try again, he was going to be my doctor.
I mainly saw Tiffany and Marianela in Lawrenceville [RSC of NJ], who are the best! They both were informative, compassionate and caring. They always took interest and just made me feel comfortable. The nurses in Eatontown are also really great. During my last procedure Heather was really great and helped me get through a difficult retrival. I can't say enough good things about the nursing staff, they are one of a kind.
How was your experience with Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey?
I was a patient of Reproductive Science Center starting in 2011 or 2012. The doctor, who is no longer with the practice, was less than satisfactory to say the least. She had no bedside manner and just felt cold. I ultimately got pregnant by another doctor during that time frame and had my first child. Today was my last visit with him and I've had mixed emotions because while I want to move on and grow my pregnancy the "normal" way, I wish he and the nurses could see this pregnancy all the way through. I've never felt more comfortable with a doctor than I have with Dr. Martinez. It's a very invasive and stressful time and you want someone to have your back and that's how I've felt every step of the way. I would recommend Dr. Martinez to anyone that is going through this experience. He is simply the best!
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey?
Be patient and trust that Dr. Martinez will guide you in the right direction. Even if things don't turn out the way you want them to, trust that he has your best interest in mind.

I don't have many bad things to say about the clinic. The only improvement I might suggest is through the billing department. Sometimes, I'd receive conflicting information when asking questions, however I do understand that this is a complicated topic so I took it all with a grain of salt. A strength is that its seems as though overall the staff is incredibly compassionate, caring and knowledgeable.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alan Martinez at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
For my first treatment cycle with Dr. Martinez, my prescription medication maximum was met so I ended up paying around $6,000. My second cycle, I've only had to pay a few hundred dollars as my insurance renewed because of some special circumstances.
Describe Alan Martinez's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
Dr. Martinez, my husband and I discussed this in depth and we decided given my history and current state that transferring multiple embryos was the best course for us.
I had no issue with Dr. Martinez at all. He's always been great every time I talked to him. Always willing to explain anything and everything I asked him.... At the time I was trying to get pregnant on my own and using Donor Sperm. I tried 3 IUI cycles where all 3 times my eggs just weren't growing to a large enough size (I believe it's 10mm+?) they needed to be to proceed with using the Donor Sperm for any of the cycles. Luckily my Insurance is top notch and covered all my treatments and Meds for the IUI cycles. Having been unsuccessful the clinic suggested using a Donor Egg and my existing Donor Sperm

Describe the protocols Alan Martinez used in your cycles at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey and their degree of success.
Having been unsuccessful the clinic suggested using a Donor Egg and my existing Donor Sperm....this also required purchasing a package for that procedure $9K+$11K or $15K (purchase of the Eggs). None of which was covered by my Insurance, so I borrowed against my 401K and proceeded. Out of the 6 eggs that were fertilized only 1 survived which was used for the IVF cycle; unsuccessfully implanted so now I'm back to where I was with no baby, in debt and locked into my Company and job until it's paid back in 5 yrs. :( I'm taking a break right now struggling with the lack of baby and what I'm going to do next.

Describe Alan Martinez's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Reproductive Science Center of New Jersey.
I'm not familiar with this and/or tried this so, no comment.
He has been very through and has answered all questions. The consults have been very informative. I am overweight and I know Dr. Martinez should mention that losing weight would help fertility issues but I felt like he was a little judgmental and I felt like I was being blamed for issues. I know that was not his intention but that is how I felt.... When I asked why I had to go on birth control before IVF, the response was that they had to control my cycle because there are so many egg retrievals in the office.
They [RSC of NJ] communicate well, it's easy to make an appointment and they are kind. Sometimes I feel rushed. They also only do procedures at the Eatontown office which is far from where I live. When having iuis I asked for a little bit later appointment (it was 7am) due to the distance we were driving and they would not accommodate us.... I once got bloodwork done to check progesterone and they did not call to tell me the results, however they did post on the patient portal.

Ask questions.

There have been a few times where I felt rushed because the office was busy. I also felt like some of the appointments, like a pre-op appointment could have been combined with another appointment because all I did was sign paperwork and had to pay a copay. When I asked why I had to go on birth control before IVF, the response was that they had to control my cycle because there are so many egg retrievals in the office. Other times he was wonderful and did treat me like a human.

I felt Dr. Martinez couldn't do enough for us. He always made himself available and even took time to call me with my results...I could not say enough wonderful things about Dr. Martinez he took time to make sure we understood everything ever step of the way. He never pressured us or swayed us one way or another he gave us straight facts and let us do what we felt was most comfortable.
With the iuis that was covered under our insurance. With ivf our insurance does not cover anything but they did absolutely try for us. We paid out of pocket so far around $18,000 and I haven't regretted it. We are still undergoing our ivf journey...I love that I can call up [Reproductive Science Center] with any question or concern no matter how crazy and they always take my concern with full attention. I have never felt alone in this whole process I actually feel like they are rooting for me each step of the way.
