How was your experience with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
As mentioned earlier, strengths were that she was really generous with her time when I experienced a traumatic incident with another doctor and switched her schedule to be able to perform my first egg retrieval. I will forever be grateful to her for that. But unfortunately I can't really recommend her in retrospect considering the horrible lack of preparation and explanation of risks of IVF before getting into the process.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
If you don't already know all the right questions to ask, stop. Go home. Read everything you can about IVF. Read through every Reddit thread about IVF. Become an amateur expert. Then you can maybe go back to RMA and try.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Dr. Shapiro had one major redeeming quality. When Dr. Kaser tried (twice) to stick a vaginal ultrasound wand into my rectum, I had my first egg retrieval three days later, and I was really nervous to do it with a doctor I didn't know after the experience with Dr. Kaser. Dr. Shapiro moved around her whole schedule so that she could be the one to do the egg retrieval. I was so grateful to her that I brought her flowers that day and cried tears of gratitude when I came out of the anesthesia. Unfortunately, that was the end of my gratitude for Dr. Shapiro though. I realized in hindsight that when we met with her for our initial consultation at the clinic, she told us NOTHING of significance about the experience of IVF. She did not prepare us for the nightmarish year that was to come. She did not give us the correct advice that we should have received at the time (get a vasectomy reversal; do not do IVF, or at least don't exclusively do IVF). She did not tell us what IVF would be like, and she didn't tell us what a vasectomy reversal would be like. She didn't tell us the risks of IVF. Also, we found out only after the second egg retrieval (a period of about 4-5 months) that my husband's sperm was "low motility and abnormal morphology." Even though it was from the same batch of sperm. Had we known after they first got his sperm, we might have made different choices (i.e. done a vasectomy reversal earlier to try to come at the issue from multiple angles).
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
Omg I forgot about this whole issue. After my first egg retrieval when we didn't get as many high quality embryos as we wanted, she told us that for our next cycle, she would add three more medications. I asked her why we were not given this option to start with, and the only reason she gave was that the medications were "expensive." Folks, I later discovered that it would be an extra $600 for the medications. An extra $600. On a $20,000 cycle. And in any case, she should have let US make that decision. Regardless, we got even worse results on the second cycle than we did on the first. (First cycle, 10 eggs--> 2 embryos, one low quality, one decent quality. Second cycle, 17 eggs --> 2 embryos, both low quality.)
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Northern California. (Assigned nurse: Sierra)
I honestly don't know whose fault this is, but I have to presume it was the nurse's responsibility since that was who I communicated with. But the following situation happened TWICE. Prior to my first egg retrieval, I had sent in my STI (etc) panel results to the clinic that I had done by my primary care physician so my insurance would cover it. They said they were missing two results, so I resent those results. The RMA nurse confirmed in writing that they'd received it. But the VERY NEXT DAY, they took my blood (unbeknownst to me) for those two tests. I only found out two months later when I got a bill for nearly $300! Then, before my embryo transfer, they required me to do a second panel of the 10+ STI and Hepatitis and Measles (etc etc) tests because it had expired (after 1 year from the original tests). So I did the same thing. Again, they confirmed in writing. The next time I went in for hormone testing, I noticed the nurse tech was taking vial after vial of my blood. I asked why and she said the STI panel. Luckily I stopped it and made sure those tests were cancelled, otherwise that could have been another $2000 bill I'd have to fight!
Describe your experience with RMA of Northern California.
Its main strength is Spruce, the online messaging system and how responsive they are. The other strength is that they have a client relations coordinator you can talk to when there is a problem. Weaknesses - Callous disregard for how grueling this process is for a patient to go through - Complete administrative disorganization (charging me for tests I didn't consent to multiple times, double charging my credit card for an egg retrieval to the tune of $37,000) - Dr. Kaser, a doctor at the SF office who I had to see once for an ultrasound, tried to stick the ultrasound wand up my rectum instead of my vagina. I had to stop him when I realized one more shove and he was going to be fully in my rectum. When I first alerted him to being at and partially in my rectum, he partially adjusted but then went right back to it, and so I told him again. He then finally LOOKED where he was going and went straight for my vagina but didn't clean the wand first! Horrifying. - They did NOT tell us about the risks of IVF or give us any clear explanation about what it would be like on an emotional level. All they explained to us in the initial consult was the physiological process of embryonic development. They were generally awful at explaining anything really. If I'd known what to ask in the initial consult, I would have left the clinic never to return. But unfortunately, I was a completely unsuspecting victim and flew blind into what would turn out to be a nightmare of a year. I'll also include the recent letter I wrote to them, which received a generic and dismissive response from Dr. McQueen (the doctor I was switched to when Dr. Shapiro went on maternity leave). See below: Good morning. I woke up still so angry about how my negative test result was handled, and I already spoke to Ingrid, but I think it’s important that the whole team hear directly from me. I don’t blame you for the negative pregnancy test; that was obviously always a possibility. But making me wait til the absolute end of day for that result, ignoring my message to Spruce asking for an update around the time I was told I would be called, and the doctor (who I have never met, so I have zero connection to whatsoever) making the excuse that she waited until the clinic was nearly closed to call me because she was “in clinic” all day…all that is unacceptable. The result of this test is what every woman who steps foot into your clinic is waiting for; and my specific result is what every woman fears. THIS was the moment for you to show up for your patient. Not only a pregnancy test, but a NEGATIVE pregnancy test. This was a critically important moment to handle with care and tact. There is no reason you couldn’t prioritize making what amounted to a 60-second phone call. (The first 10 seconds of which were spent waiting for the doctor to seemingly pull up my chart, as if she had no idea what she was about to tell me, and then suddenly switch tone of voice to tell me it’s negative.) And if a doctor really isn’t available all day, why on EARTH can a nurse not read me a negative result? It’s not like Dr. McQueen told me anything at all. She offered ZERO words of encouragement. ZERO reasons she thinks it might have happened. ZERO “we are SO determined to help you get pregnant, sweetie! Let’s grieve this, and then kick ass next time!” THAT’s what a patient wants to hear on their first negative pregnancy result. A patient wants to hear that you’re on her team, that you deeply feel her pain but that you are ready to lift her up to keep going if that’s what she wants. I’d rather have the nurse tech Trish call me–at least she makes an effort to look like she’s happy to see me every time I come to the office. Please understand what it’s like to be a patient at an IVF clinic. You are dealing in an extremely sensitive space. The best person to deliver bad news is not a doctor who doesn’t have time for you or doesn’t wish to offer you words of encouragement or empathy. You need to prioritize giving people their pregnancy test results. You need to prioritize delivering bad news ESPECIALLY. I didn’t schedule any clients all day until 4pm, figuring that surely I’d have at least a couple hours to recover no matter the result. But instead I had 20 minutes. Like I said to the doctor, we’re getting a vasectomy reversal because the problems I’ve dealt with from this clinic have made this incredibly difficult process even more difficult. Speaking of which, next time a patient shows up in my situation, where a vasectomy reversal was an option, please tell them what it’s like to do IVF. Dr. Shapiro didn’t push back at ALL when we said we didn’t think vasectomy reversal was the best option. She should have said something like, “We will of course respect your decision, but let me tell you what IVF is really like. It is grueling. It is potentially multiple egg retrievals where you’ll be going under general anesthesia. It is weeks and weeks of injections–multiple per night–which you’ll have to administer yourself with minimal instruction. It is month after month of potentially bad news. It is no cake walk. My honest recommendation is to get the vasectomy reversal.” If Dr. Shapiro had told us that vasectomy reversal was going to be so much less of an ordeal than IVF would be, we might have been able to skip all of this heartbreak. I’m aware that this might be dismissed as one woman complaining, but I urge you not to do so. I KNOW that for every single patient, the universal truth is that this process is gut-wrenchingly hard and vulnerable. THAT is the fact that I hope guides your clinic’s decision-making in how you work with patients. I really hope you are able to hear all this feedback and change the way things are run for the sake of your other patients. Thank you for listening.

I'm definitely the "worried" patient with plenty of "what if" questions and Dr Shapiro always had an answer or a plan of action for every step of the process. One of the most comforting aspects of the experience was learning that Dr. Shapiro herself would be performing the egg retrieval. It was heartening to know that the person overseeing my fertility treatment and who was already familiar with my medical history would be the one carrying out the procedure. This added a sense of ease and trust that is invaluable in such a delicate process.
The [RMA of Northern California] clinic is conveniently located in SF downtown and close to the Bart/Muni station, so it was incredibly easy to attend regular check-ups without disrupting my daily routine or requesting any time off from work...I found everyone at the clinic to be both warm and skillful. I also had no issues communicating with staff via Spruce and appreciated having a tool that provides 24/7 support.

The egg retrieval process is undoubtedly a sensitive one, and from the moment I stepped into the clinic until the final moments of the procedure, Dr. Shapiro and her team provided unwavering support and care, making the journey remarkably smooth. Dr. Shapiro's approachability and warmth further elevated the entire experience. She made herself available to address any questions or concerns I had, no matter how small, and her genuine care for her patients was evident in every interaction.
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
Initially, we had to postpone the medication cycle due to an unexpected large cyst in one of my ovaries. Interestingly, it was Dr. Shapiro who discovered the cyst before my medical provider could. While this news could have been unsettling, Dr. Shapiro's feedback and guidance immediately put me at ease. Her ability to communicate complex medical information in a reassuring manner made the situation feel less scary and overwhelming. She skillfully timed the process to ensure that the cyst did not interfere with the subsequent medication cycle. Her precise planning and careful monitoring allowed me to grow the follicles without any harm to my ovaries, which was a tremendous relief.

Dr.Shapiro began my consultation by asking about me and where I was in life. No judgement or rush. She genuinely cared and was there to listen. She was honest and transparent with the data of freezing at my age and that was very important to me...Trust her. I walked-in into this experience skeptical because of my age and the data of a live birth rates. But how I ended up responding and how positive Dr.Shapiro felt, made me realize that I wasn’t just another patient.

How was your experience with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
As a patient who was doing this without a partner, her positive attitude and enthusiasm of how well I was responding to the medication at my age helped me stay positive. She was rooting for me, even when I found it hard to stay positive at times, because getting pregnant is a numbers game. It’s easy to spin reading articles or side-effects to medications. Dr.Shapiro stopped me from spinning by reminding me to ask her anything if I was worried. I also loved that she proactively put me on meds that would help prevent OHSS. I was cared for before, during and after my retrieval. It was the best outcome and experience that exceeded my expectations.

I started two injections on day 3 of my period, Gonal F and Menopur after my ultrasound. My baseline was 17 follicles. Day 7 of my period I added the cetrotide injection to the other two. I started to go to the clinic every 2 to 3 days during these injections. My follicles were growing at a steady rate. Towards the last week, I started to feel my ovaries become very heavy and it was tiring to walk for extended periods. A hot water bag or compress was very helpful. And I was going to the clinic every day for the last week. From start to finish, I had 11 days of 3 daily injections. On day 10 the Gonal F med to mature eggs dosage was dropped by 75mg and then on day 12 the trigger shot plus start of an oral medication to prevent OHSS. Day 14 was my retrieval.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Northern California. (Assigned nurse: Hanna)
The nursing staff was a bit of a revolving door, but that’s expected in a clinic where you need to be seen almost daily. All the nurses I had were great. My only critique would be that their hand-offs weren’t as good as it could’ve been. For example, if the Dr made the nurse aware that I was going to be away for a couple of days the note in the chart was ignored by the next nurse who saw me to the one who scheduled me. Their own internal miscommunication had me spinning as to whether I should cancel my plans of being out of town for two days would affect my retrieval. It wasn’t until the doctor stepped in to say no it was fine for me to be out put me at ease.

Dr. Shapiro is very compassionate and thorough. She took the time to make sure I understood all of the terminology and explained every step of what an egg retrieval would look like by drawing me a diagram. I felt like I had enough time to ask follow-up questions and process all of the information I was receiving without feeling rushed. I appreciate Dr. Shapiro's ability to be direct in a very comforting manner, it was very helpful in setting my expectations.

Dr. Shapiro's strengths include her response time and ability to use technology like the Spruce application that RMA NorCal uses to communicate with you - but they end there...She is not a proactive doctor who will respect your timeline for conception and is disinterested in developing a plan specific to your needs, timeline, and concerns. She will continue to point to your lab work, your ultrasounds, and age as reasons to push off exploring IVF, IUI, hormonal treatments, etc. Unless you are ok trying for multiple years and doing things exactly by the book (try unassisted for 6 months if you are 35+, try unassisted for 12 months if you are under 35) even though you have your own data that there may be underlying issues - I would strongly NOT recommend this doctor.
The [RMA of Northern California] clinic's only strength is that they use the Spruce app. They are otherwise difficult to reach, have long waits for tests, and keep all of your results private. If you want to see any of your test results you have to fill out a release form for each test and then they send them to you individually as a message...The nurses who drew my blood were excellent...When I ended our engagement with RMA NorCal, it took them over two weeks to send me all of my test results because the nursing staff "was with patients." Complete disregard for me, who is also a patient.
How was your experience with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Dr. Shapiro's strengths include her response time and ability to use technology like the Spruce application that RMA NorCal uses to communicate with you - but they end there. In our initial consultation I explained that we would like 3 biological children, before age 38 to avoid any complications with geriatric pregnancies. I'm 33 and have had 3 anovulatory cycles after trying for 5 months - which I only discovered on my own using an ovulation predictor kit after the first 2 months of trying (having sex every other day, taking supplements, leading a healthy lifestyle etc.) were unsuccessful. Even with this information, Dr. Shapiro was disinterested in speaking with us, developing a plan, and told us to "keep trying for at least 12 months before taking any additional steps" but if we wanted to continue running tests with the clinic we could.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Simply, do not see Dr. Shapiro. She is not a proactive doctor who will respect your timeline for conception and is disinterested in developing a plan specific to your needs, timeline, and concerns.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Dr. Shapiro consistently dismissed concerns or questions I had by saying that I my ultrasound and blood work were "within normal ranges." She reiterated my age, how many months we had been trying, and my hormone values as reasons to not pursue any planning or proactive measures. To me, this demonstrated she was very clearly stack ranking me against numbers and statistics for what is normal - and would not engage in any planning or additional conversations around why I wasn't getting pregnant because I did not demonstrate any "abnormal" numbers vs. getting curious to investigate why I wasn't getting pregnant or discussing options with me that we could start to look into.
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
Dr. Shapiro ran LH, E2 (estradiol), and TSH blood work as part of the standard baseline protocol. However, I've now come to learn that that was not even a full panel as she left out FSH, Progesterone, T4, prolactin, HGH, Estrogen, DHEA Sulfate, Vitamin D, folic acid, testosterone, and cortisol; and didn't measure my baseline or continued values in a way that would determine if I was ovulating regularly. I had to ask for an ovulation confirmation ultrasound, and she mindlessly scheduled it for her next free available date - vs. speaking with me about the length of my cycles and mapping out a schedule for when I should come in to best check for ovulation. This led to a few mindlessly run tests that were inconclusive because she didn't care to run them on a specific date based on my personal cycle history.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at RMA of Northern California.
The nurses who drew my blood were excellent. However, the main nurse - Sabrina, who was responsible for coordinating my care was as clueless and disinterested as Dr. Shapiro. She knew that my husband and I had already had a full 500 gene screen done outside of RMA Norcal, but made us both do another full 500 gene screen panel. My husband's results came back before mine, and she made me schedule a GeneScreen appointment for us to review next steps. This obviously makes no sense because I had not gotten my results back yet so there was nothing to discuss. When I mentioned this to her, her response was "You're right - you should wait until your full panel comes back also. Apologies for the confusion." If you aren't someone who is experienced in WHY you'd have a gene consultation in the first place, you would have wasted time with a carrier consult. She was incredibly disorganized and also not interested in helping me create a care plan. When I ended our engagement with RMA NorCal, it took them over two weeks to send me all of my test results because the nursing staff "was with patients." Complete disregard for me, who is also a patient.
Describe your experience with RMA of Northern California.
The clinic's only strength is that they use the Spruce app. They are otherwise difficult to reach, have long waits for tests, and keep all of your results private. If you want to see any of your test results you have to fill out a release form for each test and then they send them to you individually as a message. There are no patient portals or platforms where you can see all your appointments, agendas from each appointment, test results, or scheduled tests - so you will need to keep track of all of your appointments (past and future), tests / labs and dates, completely on your own. You also need to follow up proactively on the status of the tests as there is a bit of a lag in turn around time that would honestly be faster if you just requested the blood work on your own.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California.
We spent roughly $2,000 with insurance for appointments and testing over the course of 3 appointments, and 6 tests.
Describe Alice Shapiro's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Northern California.
We did not get to the point where we discussed my egg quality, harvesting, IVF, IUI, or embryo transfer because "We had not been trying for a full year." However, she made an off-handed comment about the "thinness" of my uterine lining and when I asked how that might impact an egg's ability to implant her response was "not to worry about that."
What specific things went wrong at RMA of Northern California?
  • Lost appointments
  • Failed to call with results
  • Failed to send your chart to another clinic
  • Lost results
  • Provided conflicting information
  • Failed to convey critical information
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of Northern California.
I've mentioned all of the specifics in the previous section but ultimately i had many tests run with no specific strategy in mind and then those results were all hidden from me, which I had to request on an individual basis after the fact. None of my ultrasound imaging was provided and is still missing.

We met with Dr Shapiro once or twice and she handled the communication of the end results. Unfortunately, we ended up with 0 frozen embryos from ~16eggs - an unpleasant and unexpected result. Our main issue is that we didn't get an explanation on the result: we were asking why / what went wrong and we were being told numbers and percentages of failures...Don't expect transparency of the embryology lab through her.
We were satisfied with our physical visits there [RMA of Norther California] We are displeased with the laboratory results and the statistical improbability we suffered. Ending up with 0 embryos from 16 eggs was very frustrating; no clear diagnosis was given and we had consistently below expected success rates at every step...No complaints on the nursing staff...No issues on billing whatsoever

Ending up with 0 embryos from 16 eggs was very frustrating; no clear diagnosis was given and we had consistently below expected success rates at every step. we didn't understand precisely why, their explanation being that it happens sometimes. Another issue we had was with the re-biopsy scheduling: we had 1 frozen embryo with no sufficient data from the PGT test, so had to re-biopsy it; it took the laboratory 2 weeks to get to it, thaw it, only to then _disintegrate_. Again, we don't have visibility in the laboratory as to why it took so long to re-test.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California.
No issues on billing whatsoever. They took insurance and handled it and paying copay is straightforward online.

I was really impressed with Dr. Shapiro's ability to customize my treatment to my needs and goals. I was a difficult case, someone with very severe diminished ovarian reserve and a genetic issue. I came to Dr. Shapiro after doing 6 cycles at another clinic (all failed). She was willing to take me on, was honest and upfront about our chances while still providing us with hope it could work for us. During the cycles led by Dr. Shapiro, she was at most of my appointments, was very caring and warm, and shifted my treatment plan with each appointment as needed. I could tell she kept up to date with the very most current research and was so knowledgeable on other things we could try, which I didn't see in my past clinic. Under her care, I am now pregnant with a healthy baby, something I was beginning to lose hope was ever possible.
I am in the East Bay, which made their [RMA of Northern Califonrnia] new Danville location very convenient. I do wish the clinic was open on the weekends (instead of having to drive into their SF location on the weekends for monitoring / transfers) but that was not a deal breaker for me. The clinic was very organized, clean, and has amazing staff all around...The nursing staff was also amazing, they are so caring and empathetic and hold hope for all of their patients.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
One thing I learned in general going through IVF, find out as much information as you can upfront. Ask any and every question. Dr. Shapiro was always willing to meet with me to answer questions and talk through next steps, whether in the office or over Zoom. Take advantage of that so you don't get months down the line and wonder why you hadn't asked something / tried something / etc.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Dr. Shapiro always treated me like a human. She knew and understood my case really well (which was a difficult one). She felt for my husband and I, was always extremely empathetic, and was willing to try new things even when they were low statistical chances because she worked with me like an individual, not just a number or statistic for the clinic.
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
We tried a few different things, but in the cycle that worked best for us, we did a duo-stim cycle on lower-dose injectable meds. The reason for this was my very diminished ovarian reserve & my historical response in previous cycles.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Northern California.
My care coordinator was always quick to respond, which I REALLY appreciated. I got an almost immediate response on any question or feedback, which you don't get from any other doctor (outside of fertility world) these days! The nursing staff was also amazing, they are so caring and empathetic and hold hope for all of their patients.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California.
I was lucky to have insurance coverage. Without it, it was quite expensive, I believe would be around $20-30K per cycle (which is typical in the Bay Area based on other clinics I've been to as well)
Describe Alice Shapiro's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Northern California.
I am unsure, I believe the clinic prefers single embryo transfers.

Our experience with Dr. Shapiro was the best. We had been struggling with infertility for years and had gone through negative experiences with many other providers until we met Dr. Shapiro. She was patient, compassionate, and understanding, always making sure we felt comfortable and informed throughout the entire process. Thanks to Dr. Shapiro's guidance and expertise, we were able to successfully conceive our first child through IVF!

Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
Dr. Shapiro tried the Lupron microdose protocol with me given my history and previous outcomes of other retrievals. This cycle had the best outcome out of the three. We were able to retrieve 7 eggs (compared to 5 and 1 from previous retrievals with a different doctor) and created 3 embryos (compared to 1 from previous retrievals).

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Shapiro is knowledgeable about the latest research and treatments. If I heard of other treatment options, I felt comfortable filtering them thru her and trusted she would guide us in the right direction. Dr. Shapiro also took special care to let us know, which doctor would be on site for egg retrieval and transfer and assured us we would be in good hands. Additionally, she was always responsive via Spruce and was the main doctor that followed up with us on all our results.
The [RMA of Northern California] clinic is clean, organized and well stocked with pads! I very much appreciated the latter! RMA only advises patients to do single embryo transfers, so if you want multiple embryos transferred at once this isn’t the place for you. All the doctors work great together and provide the best cross coverage. I never questioned who was doing my retrieval and transfer. I really felt like I was in the best care.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Expect to be actively involved in the decisions made during your treatment. Dr. Shapiro provides you with background about all the options available, but never forces a direction. I always made a point to ask her what her preference was and that helped me gauge what to do.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Dr. Shapiro was always kind and attentive to my needs and questions. She provided insights into alternative solutions and made me an active member of the decision making process. She remembered my history when I was a patient of hers in Kaiser and was always compassionate with us as it relates to our pass lost.
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
We committed to IVF and during our first month with Dr. Shapiro she advised that we put off our cycle for a month given the fact that I had a few cysts that could reduce the number of eggs retrieved. We are so glad we waited, because when we did start we retrieved 27 eggs. Dr. Shapiro also advised us to go thru with ICSI for th best results. Dr. Shapiro also did a great job adjusting our meds based on follicle checks and blood tests and always explained why. She also recognized that progesterone injections can be rough for some people, so leading up to and post transfer she had me on progesterone suppositories.

Dr. Shapiro stuck around to ask if I had any questions and explained the medications to me until I was sure I understood...ask questions she is very friendly and helpful and smiles a lot and is excited for your journey...3 IUI cycles which were unsuccessful...IVF cycle went great and we got 4 healthy embryos

How was your experience with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
She takes her job very seriously and chooses her words wisely, which some may find off putting, but I understand that she just wanted to make sure what she was saying came across very clear with no communication issues or confusion to what is going on. She takes her job very seriously and her goal of getting you pregnant very seriously so she takes a more serious approach which some may see as unfriendly but I view it as professional and up-front. When asking questions she is much more open and friendly but when giving you the facts of where you are she is very serious. If you ask questions she is very friendly and helpful and smiles a lot and is excited for your journey.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
She is very passionate about her job and any questions you have ask even the silly ones or even questions about your treatment and if there is a different approach you want to take.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
I saw multiple doctors while at this clinic and while some just called me in did their thing and left, Dr. Shapiro stuck around to ask if I had any questions and explained the medications to me until I was sure I understood it. She let me know if everything was proceeding normal and what to expect to see in my next scan so there weren't any surprises. She took her time and was very professional and helpful.
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
We tried 3 IUI cycles which were unsuccessful the third was a medicated treatment to produce more eggs which was unsuccessful likely due to other medical I was on. The IVF cycle went great and we got 4 healthy embryos and I am currently 10 weeks pregnant after one transfer. At one point I was having really bad cramping but was already discharged from the clinic however when I messaged my concerns they got me in for an ultrasound the next day.
How competent was Alice Shapiro at LGBTQ+ care?
She always treated me and my wife as we were a couple addressing both of our questions regardless of how silly they may have sounded. She respected my wife as an equal partner and made us feel like any other couple trying to start a family.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Northern California. (Assigned nurse: Karina )
She was fantastic always answered questions on spruce within an hour. She went over my IVF medications several times and she even combined some of my ivf medication so that I wouldn't have to buy additional packs which can cost over 1k.

Describe Alice Shapiro's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at RMA of Northern California.
The clinic only allows single embryo transfer so the doctor had no say in how many embryos could be transferred. I also have no fertility issues so they may make exceptions for patients with fertility issues.

Don’t hesitate to ask any clarifying questions that you have. The whole team is very responsive.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
I came to RMA based on the recommendation of a friend who went through the egg freezing process here. From our first call, Dr Alice Shapiro impressed me with her professionalism and knowledge. Our succinct intro call was already insightful into the egg freezing process, which set RMA apart from another clinic I researched about. Throughout the two rounds of egg freeing, I appreciated the personal touch with Tenzin, my main nurse, Nicole, who helped me monitor my egg sizing, and other team members from reception to procedure prep to billing. The whole team was super responsive - I was able to get urgent questions answered via their messaging app without having to call. I did experience OHSS the first time but the second time it was a breeze - I was pretty much back to normal in the afternoon of retrieval. Dr Shapiro was also very thoughtful with a follow up after my two rounds of procedures, which made me feel it was less of a transaction and more of a high-quality personalized care journey. Thank you to the entire RMA team in San Francisco, I enjoyed my experience very much and highly recommend to those who are considering going through the journey!

The whole team was super responsive - I was able to get urgent questions answered via their messaging app without having to call. After the procedure, the team also did follow-up calls and helped answer any questions I had thoughtfully.
Describe your experience with RMA of Northern California.
I loved how RMA’s SF location is in the city. It was accessible and I could always walk to it in the morning. Friendly and helpful staff (nurses, receptionists, billing, etc). I paid for the procedures out of pocket, had some hiccups, and they made the whole process unexpectedly painless. I felt I was treated very well! When I went in, almost everyone was in a mask, so you can also feel at ease with anonymity if you care about that. The only minor thing not as pleasant was one of the building’s front desk lady in the lobby not always in a friendly mood and when I had to get there early to get buzzed in, she made me feel not welcome. But plenty of other wonderful front desk folks that I did enjoy seeing every visit!

Dr Shapiro provides world-class treatment. This was my first time undergoing any type of fertility treatment. I couldn't have asked for a better process and experience. What I especially love about my experience with Dr Shapiro is was the time she took to explain each step. I never felt rushed or hurried. I would highly recommend Dr Shapiro to any of my friends and family. My husband feels the same way...She was caring, and always available every step of the way.
The [RMA of Northern California] clinic has almost no weaknesses - I can't think of any issue or area of improvement. In terms of strengths, I believe that the use of the Spruce app, and clear instructions, cleanliness and ease of the office visits, all make this a great experience for any new patient...The nursing staff was amazing - every visit was a breeze. The whole team is professional and I never had to wonder about my treatment plan or schedule. They took wonderful care of me. This entire team has been the best care team I've had in my life - not an exaggeration.

Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
At the onset of this process, I was struggling with a thick uterine lining and elongated period flow. Dr Shapiro first help me tackle this issue and prescribed a round of progesterone to cease bleeding. It worked exactly as she described. Next we went through the steps of growing eggs for egg retrieval (treatments were highly successful). After egg retrieval, we waited to allow time for my ovaries to recover and rest. Finally we prepped for embryo transfer, and transfer was successful as well (current active pregnancy). Dr Shapiro outlined why medicated transfer had better probability due to knowing timing of transfer and also the fact that my period were irregular. I felt comfortable with her explanation and rationale at every step.

[Dr. Alice Shapiro] was very thorough at our initial consultation and never let us down throughout the entire process....had cycles with bad results...would always have a plan to try something new the next time...Communication was above and beyond anything we could have ever expected!
Spruce app that RMA [of Northern California] uses for communication is incredible. So easy to get in touch...responses usually come in within an hour or less...you get results timely and either by phone call or Spruce. Even when my doctor isn't on-call, the other doctors are always just as helpful.

Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
We did 4 ER cycles with Dr. Shapiro. After the first one didn't yield any PGT normal embryos, she added in Clomid & Omnitrope for the 2nd (we did back to back) and this yielded 3 PGT normal embryos. The clomid also did seem to help produce more eggs retrieved for all future retrievals.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of Northern California. (Assigned nurse: Sophia)
All of the nurses at RMA have been fantastic. Sophia is my main nurse and always great. Jordan has also been amazing and on top of things. In the Danville office, Sophiya (spelling?!) is just beyond amazing!

Dr. Shapiro was incredibly empathetic, and attentive throughout my entire cycle. She...tried their best to be there for my appointments...always remembered where we left off from my last appointment and were prompt with communication via spruce app...She also was clear that IVF may not work the first time
[RMA of Northern California] billing team takes a long time to respond to emails and seem disorganized. They are however, prompt when they need to collect payment...They were prompt and detailed. They never missed a beat!...$35000
How was your experience with Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
Dr. Shapiro and her team were incredibly responsive and patient with all my questions. She always remembered where we left off from my last appointment and were prompt with communication via spruce app. She learned what lacked from my last clinic and went above and beyond for me at RMA. What I loved most was her response when I asked if she thought I should try another round of IVF. She said that there was a chance that it would work but asked if I would be willing to dedicate more time to treatment if it didn’t work. She also was clear that IVF may not work the first time but helped me work through the time, mental load and money with success rate rate for iui vs. ivf.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Alice Shapiro at RMA of Northern California?
As anxious and hopeful patients, we should ask questions and voice concerns but also trust the process. She is more than welcome to chat via messaging or on the phone, but raise any concerns you have and she can help you through it

Dr. Shapiro was incredibly empathetic, and attentive throughout my entire cycle. She and the clinic tried their best to be there for my appointments.
Describe the protocols Alice Shapiro used in your cycles at RMA of Northern California and their degree of success.
I had a cyst and she suggested that I wait one cycle to see if it would decrease in size, although it was not really a concern and should not affect the success. Upon starting my cycle, I headed straight into preparing for an egg retrieval. I stimmed for 8 days and were able to retrieve 11 eggs, 10 fertilized via ICIS and 9 made it to blastocyst. After genetic testing, I ended up with 6 embryos (1 had an abnormality and 1 inconclusive). Shortly after my retrieval, we discussed my timeline for a frozen embryo transfer and started birth control to pause my cycle. After a week, I opted for a medicated transfer and were lucky enough to receive positive news. Our egg stuck! Post positive beta, Dr. Shapiro continued to be there for each of my ultrasounds before I graduated.
