How was your experience with Anate Brauer at RMA of New York?
Dr. Brauer was very compassionate, calling me personally after my 3rd failed cycle. She explained that after 3 failed IUI cycles she would typically recommend IVF - the onus was on me to request additional IUI cycles with adjusted medications (my cycles had each yielded 1 mature follicle, which is not ideal for IUI). Whenever I saw her during monitoring, she was frank about her recommendations and the constraints of RMA's practice, which made me trust her. Other than seeing her at monitoring appointments, it was impossible to get in touch with her. The reception desk told me to email her team, and her team rarely responded to my messages except when I asked specific questions about medications.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anate Brauer at RMA of New York?
I would not recommend Dr. Brauer to someone who is new to fertility treatment, as she did not fully explain what to expect or even what the course of treatment would be - I have had another doctor in the past who fully explained that we would do x cycles of this, then y cycles of that, to form expectations. At the time she was new to RMA's practice and was still adjusting to their protocols, so this might improve with time. You should be very knowledgable about your cycles and diagnoses and what is normal for your body, and be able advocate for yourself - although it is hard to get in touch with the team to do so.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at RMA of New York?
Dr. Brauer had a warm manner and always felt like an old friend when I saw her in my consultation for secondary infertility, and in monitoring appointments. I previously knew her from monitoring at Shady Grove. However, after each of my 3 failed cycles in her practice, there was never any opportunity to ask questions or re-evaluate my treatment for the next cycle. I attempted to schedule a post-cycle appointment with her team but my emails went ignored. It was exceedingly hard to get attention from a human on her team. She prescribed the same meds and dosages for each of the 3 cycles - except she did prescribe Prometrium, against RMA's general protocol, after the first failed cycle when I asked about it (I previously had success with it at Shady Grove).
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at RMA of New York and their degree of success.
1 cycle of 5mg Letrozole, Ovidrel trigger, IUI, no Progesterone - yielded 1 mature follicle and no pregnancy. 2 cycles of 5mg Letrozole, Ovidrel, IUI, followed by 200mg Progesterone 2x day from the 3rd day post-IUI - yielded 1 mature follicle and no pregnancy, then 2 mature follicles and no pregnancy.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at RMA of New York.
The nursing staff was courteous and polite in-person and over the phone. The only way for me to initiate contact was via email and the rarely responded unless I had a specific question about medication. At 2 separate baseline monitoring appointments, after I had called to report a new cycle, the nurses failed to update my paperwork and so the monitoring doctor assumed I was pregnant. This was really frustrating and made me feel that I was not receiving the quality of care I expected.
Additionally, after my 1st IUI I was told to lie down for 5 minutes and someone would tell me when I could leave. No one came to get me, and a nurse came in to prepare the room for another patient thinking it was already empty.
Describe your experience with RMA of New York.
Strengths - they are open every day and conveniently located. They obtained an insurance pre-authorization for IUI in a single day, which is incredibly efficient compared to other practices. I had no issues with my prescriptions. Occasionally they play great R&B music in the waiting room.
Weaknesses - there are tons of agitated people in the waiting room. It is a massive practice, absorbing all of Shady Grove's clients. Several times, a failure on the part of nurses or coordinators was explained by "we have a lot of patients here" - this is really not a good excuse for the amount of mistakes that were made.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anate Brauer at RMA of New York.
I have a fertility rider on my insurance so I only paid $50 copays for each monitoring visit.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at RMA of New York.
My first IUI appointment was extremely mismanaged. The coordinators failed to obtain consent from my husband before telling him he could leave, so he had to come back with me (and our child, since he is the main caretaker) - when we arrived and were ushered somewhere by a coordinator, the receptionist yelled at us across the busy waiting room confirming our names and that we were there for IUI - which felt really unprofessional. We had been told that it would be fine to have our child there while the paperwork was completed, but it really was not a good idea and I wish that the coordinators had handled the paperwork as they were supposed to.
As I mentioned above, the nurses failed to update my chart for several baseline monitors, which confused the monitoring doctors and felt sloppy.

How was your experience with Anate Brauer at RMA of New York?
I love Dr. Brauer. It was important to me to find a doctor that I trusted, who would listen to my concerns and candidly answer my questions, and Dr. Brauer delivered. I spent a lot of time at the clinic over the course of my treatments, and genuinely liking my team was one of my primary concerns when picking a fertility clinic, and I can safely say that they met my expectations.
Even through multiple failed IUIs and IVF cycles, I was happy to be at the clinic. After years of feeling like my infertility woes were downplayed by most people around me, Dr. Brauer and her team (Sara, Deb, Lily and all the others!) made me feel like I had a community that was as invested as I was in my treatments.
It's somewhat unsatisfying to be left with an 'unexplained' diagnosis. But I think Dr. Brauer was as unsatisfied as I was. After two cycles with early arresting blasts, Dr. Brauer began consulting other doctors to see if anyone else had success with tweaked protocols. And, while neither of us was sure what ultimately resulted in better outcomes, something she changed did work. There are a lot of unknowns in fertility treatment, and I felt that Dr. Brauer did a great job of bringing me along in my treatment plans and explaining relative confidence we should have going into each one.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at RMA of New York?
I truly love Dr. Brauer and her team. Infertility was a lonely experience for me, but when I was at the clinic, I felt supported and like the team genuinely cared about how I was doing and wanted me to succeed as much as I did myself. They made me feel heard, were compassionate when treatments didn't work, and helped me to understand how we'd change the approach for the next round. I never felt rushed or like my questions weren't reasonable.
And now that I do have a baby, the team is still thrilled to see updates and is rooting me on as a parent.
Describe your experience with your nurse at RMA of New York. (Assigned nurse: Sara Charlesworth)
I loved all of the nurses on Dr. Brauer's team - Sara, Lily, Deb. They were warm, knowledgeable, easy to reach and lovely to spend time with.
The only complaint I have is that my instructions were always given on the phone, which meant that I had to take notes or remember dosages, which was overwhelming at first. I suspect that if I had asked for written instructions afterward, they would have happily complied, but I never asked. And I appreciated the phone calls so that I could more easily ask questions.

If you’re looking for someone to take the time to sit down with you and actually set realistic expectations, I don’t know if Dr. Brauer is the right fit. During 3 rounds, I think I saw her during 5 monitoring appointments, she performed one of my retrievals, and stopped by after another. She is nice and relatable, but I didn’t really feel like she understood where I was coming from. She just kept recommending more rounds, even when I reached their recommended amount, she still said I should go for more. I felt like just a number and didn’t really feel heard or understood.
[Shady Grove Fertility New York] Strengths - they’re a well oiled machine, the monitoring appointments are pretty quick. Weaknesses - if you want a doctor present at most of your monitoring appointments, that’s highly unlikely here. The doctors aren’t really present...I only talked to my doctor a handful of times. I felt like the nurses are doing most of the legwork. I also never had a conversation regarding my lab work until after my retrieval, so I went into it with completely different expectations and was devastated after. I wish that my doctor was transparent with me and didn’t seem so shocked when I’d get upset with the results. If expectations were managed correctly, I would have known what the results would be. I didn’t even know that I’d need to do more than one round, that only became apparent after my first retrieval.

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
Do your research. I went into egg freezing very naively, so I went with the first clinic I did a consultation with. Based on my experience, I’m looking at other clinics now to try to find a doctor that can assist with a low AMH retrieval.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
I rarely saw Dr. Brauer and when I did, she would just tell me how great everything looked. She didn’t manage expectations and when I’d get upset, she would seem shocked that I didn’t think my results were good. I didn’t know I even had a low AMH until after my first retrieval and I had no clue I’d need more than one cycle.
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed) and their degree of success.
For my first round, I started with 300 mg of Gonal-f, 150 mg Menopur and as time went on these increased to 450 mg and 300 mg, respectively. They also introduced Cetrotide midway through the cycle and the trigger was Pregnyl. We retrieved 4 mature eggs that cycle.
For the second round, we did the same protocol but introduced estrogen patches a week after ovulating. We retrieved 7 mature eggs that cycle.
We followed the same protocol for the 3rd round and only retrieved 4 mature eggs.

At the time, it was $7800 per cycle, excluding anesthesia. I was initially offered a single cycle or the Assure program (guaranteed 20 eggs). I went with the single cycle. After that I asked if I could do the Assure program, but was told I didn't qualify because of my low AMH. Why was it even offered in the first place?
They also raised the price of a cycle to $8400. I asked to be grandfathered into the original pricing and luckily they did accommodate that request.

After my first retrieval, no one called with the results. I was never told I’d need multiple cycles in order to obtain the recommended amount and I wasn’t informed that I even had a low AMH until after my first retrieval.
The absolute best thing I can say about Dr. Brauer is that her bedside manner during procedures was UNMATCHED. I mean, talk about someone helping you to feel more calm, at ease, comfortable, and prepared! She 100% loves the surgical aspect of her work, it shows tremendously, and your safety during these procedures is of the utmost concern to her...She will, however, always take the time to answer your questions, but do note that if your questions challenge her methods or the protocols, expect to be met with some tension, dare I say attitude about it...

The absolute best thing I can say about Dr. Brauer is that her bedside manner during procedures was UNMATCHED. I mean, talk about someone helping you to feel more calm, at ease, comfortable, and prepared! She 100% loves the surgical aspect of her work, it shows tremendously, and your safety during these procedures is of the utmost concern to her. She takes that role very seriously, but to go a step further and ensure your comfort as well, says a lot about the kind of medical professional that she is. I will 100% miss having her perform any future transfers or retrievals. That must be said.
Dr. Brauer is intelligent, aspirant, tenacious, and stays up-to-date on information regarding reproductive medicine and is an active member of ASRM and ACOG. Like most physicians, she makes sure that you know these things about her. She is not shy about her credentials (as well she should not be). Albeit being confined sometimes to protocol, she will listen and work with you towards a treatment you feel you are a co-conspirator to, but to a point. While we felt a part of our treatment decisions, it was not without difficulty and push back, sometimes resulting in very tense follow-ups.
Dr. Brauer will give you her time, yes. That is another wonderful quality. Sometimes she will give it eagerly, and other times may feel more obligatory. She will, however, always take the time to answer your questions, but do note that if your questions challenge her methods or the protocols, expect to be met with some tension, dare I say attitude about it. If you are coming from a place of researched information, email it to her, provide that clinical study you're referencing, otherwise, it will sound anecdotal and it won't be taken seriously.
There was one occassion that Dr. Brauer returned our after hours call to help us with our concerns regarding a trigger shot for our second retrieval. Since the first had failed due to mistimed trigger, we were nervous and did not agree at all with the dosage we were given. She called, spoke to us directly at 9PM in the evening, changed the dosage and we had a successful retrieval. Despite the critical things I've had to say based on our experience....she is THAT doctor - the one that will show up for you if she likes you and/or has something to prove! Stay within her good graces, and she's phenomenal.
Our experience with Dr. Bruaer turned sore when we opted not to PGS test our embryos and endured two miscarriages, one of which was an abnormal embryo (Trisomy 22) and the second of which we are still awaiting results on. The foundation on which we were building our medical professional and patient relationship began to see some cracks as our transfers kept resulting in positive pregnancy, followed by miscarriage. It felt obvious to us that these stats were not good for the clinics overall numbers and any zest to fight with us for the family we so desired began to look more like exasperation. Additionally, since we do not pay out of pocket and are covered fully by insurance, we always felt like we were not their ideal patients, and treatment was varied based on this.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
I would advise to stay within her good graces, because that is when she is the best doctor anyone could ask for both professionally and emotionally.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
The experience of number vs. human at SGF Manhattan was a bit of an up and down rollercoaster for me. Initially, after the consult and on my first few visits, I absolutely felt like a number. I still can't exactly tell you why, but I waited for nearly an hour the first time, and over an hour the second time, for bloodwork and ultrasound monitoring as I watched several women who came in after me, leave before I was even called. When it happened the second time, I burst into tears (please note I was recovering from an 18 week preterm labor/loss) and I asked to speak to someone about it, because it was not making any sense to me why these other women were being seen before I was. The girl I spoke with was apathetic at best, spoke to me and looked at me like I was a number. Plain awful experience, where she tried to feign sympathy, but in this very cold tone and attitude. It ended up being so far from what treatment from the staff at SGF was like! I still can not tell you why this was the case those first few visits, but it never happened again after that, and I saw that girl very little because whatever her role was, she was never front facing. She was usually in the back offices.
Once my treatment began, the front desk staff (it's a different crew now post covid) were amazing. Jennifer at the front desk in particular is supremely efficient, kind, pleasant, fast, on top of things, and always knows what shes talking about, or will be upfront and tell you that she needs to find out for you, but always returns your calls to do just that. I would walk in, and they knew me by name, and greeted me more often than not. Granted, part of this was that I was a patient for more than one year, but to be honest, they knew my name and recognized me pretty early on too. The phlebotomists are also efficient, and get you in and out as fast as possible while chatting with you and being pleasant. With the exception of the incidents mentioned above, I never waited more than 20 minutes to be seen. They accomodated later monitoring hours if needed. I could call the morning of, to schedule an appointment if I had been unable to reach them on a Friday evening and it was for Monday, or sometimes even show up and be seen for monitoring without an appointment. Little things like this made a huge difference. Even with these accomodations or last minute appointments, they still made me feel seen, moved me through quickly, yet I never felt "rushed." I think the team works really well together and allows for this, because it still amazes me to think about it in comparison to other clinics.
However, what I must say is that after you've been there for some time, and your treatment isn't working or your transfers are failing (or in my particular case, resulting in miscarriage from untested embryos), it is then, you may begin to feel like a number again. This is what it felt like for me. After our third transfer, resulting in a second miscarriage, the words "you've stayed too long at the fair" kept wrining in my ears to the tune of Streisand.
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed) and their degree of success.
I came to SGF in October of 2020 after preterm labor at 18 weeks resulting in loss. After several months of monitoring my beta, a Saline Sonogram was finally done by another doctor within the practice to determine why my HCG would not drop below 5. A very small, microscopic protrustion was seen, possibly leftover fetal tissue, which Dr. Bruaer suspected may be the cause, but would not be an interruption for IVF treatment, and so treatment finally began in the new year of 2021 with a new deductible :)
I was told my numbers were great, my retrieval would be textbook. I had an AMH of 3.48 and a cohort of 13 or so follicles (6-7 on either side). We began with one week of Alyacen birth control to stabilize my ovaries, followed by a moderate IVF stim cycle using Gonal F and Menopur (exact dosage: 150 Gonal F, 150 menopur). On day 5 of the stim cycle we introduced Cetrotide once a day in the daytime. Monitoring showed that I was responding perfectly to the stimulations, the follicles were growing synchronously and everything was moving along in "textbook" fashion. By day 10 of stims, I noticed watery discharge. I brought this to the attention of my nurses and Dr. Brauer on day 12 of stims when I had a huge gush of watery discharge which was very unusual for me along with dizziness and stomach troubles. No one seemed concerned. They advised these symptoms were normal. The discharge continued until retrieval day. We stimulated for 12 days. Then, I was given a trigger shot of Ovidrel (standard unit dosage) 36 hours before my scheduled retrieval. I went in for monitoring 12 hours after the trigger shot. I had very bad stomach pains by then. I notified the nurse. Again, no one seemed concerned, and so I assumed these were typical symptoms. By the morning of the retrieval I was in excruciating pain. I could barely sit. I could hardly walk. My ovaries were in severe pain, but also the top of my stomach. It did not feel normal, but I had nothing to compare it to. Dr. Brauer was not available for my retrieval, as she was away. My retrieval was performed by Dr. Singer. I have nothing good to say about Dr. Singer what-so-ever. The retrieval was a failure. Despite having 30+ follicles measuring synchronously, at least 20 of which were measuring 14mm or more prior to trigger, Dr. Singer was unprepared for my retrieval, coupled with ovulating too early. It was as if he had not even looked at my charts at all based on his replies to my spouse post retrieval. He was only able to retrieve 2 follicles. The nurse that was in the room with him said it appeared as though I had already ovulated. We know in hindsight, this is exactly what happened. Both follicles were mature, and fertilized, therefore we knew we could rule out empty follicle syndrome, but neither made it past the cavitation state into blasts.
Fast foward to retrieval #2. No longer willing to work with Dr. Singer at all, who told us that if Dr. Brauer thought we would have better results than the 2 follicles obtained, she was mistaken, Dr. Brauer promised to perfom my retrieval and stood by her word.
The protocol was longer, Alyacen birth control for 16 days, followed by 14 days of stims, introducing cetrotide again on day 5, but halfway through, Menopur was dropped to 75 ml vs. 150, and cetrotide doubled on day 9. We agreed to administer a mixed trigger shot of .8ml Lupron and 1500 HCG intramuscularly. Retrieval took place 36 hours after. I felt 100x better than the first time. I knew for sure then that something had gone wrong that first time and it was related to the trigger shot. The second retrieval was successful, 17 follicles collected, 15 mature, 12 fertilized, and 8 frozen (not tested). Dr. Brauer did say it was the second most difficult retrieval of her career due to my anatomy and the left ovary being wedged between two fibroids that measure about the size of the ovary when it's dormant.
Our very first FET was a natural cycle since I ovulate regularly on my own. Alyacen birth control to manipulate timing due to a death in the family followed by monitoring natural ovulation cycle. PIO shots for 6 days, followed by transfer and continuation of PIO shots. Tested positive with HPT as early as day of. Beta confirmed positive pregnancy 9DP5DT w/ Beta at 288. At 8 week ultrasound, fetus measured behind, by 10 weeks, no cardiac activity and a D&C was performed at the clinic.
Second transfer, also natural cycle, this time with a trigger shot, PIO shots for 6 days prior - implantation failure, Beta was 1.68
Third transfer, also natural cycle, trigger shot, PIO shots for 6 days prior to transfer, Positive HPT 7dp5dt, and Beta was positive but low on 9DP5DT at 30. fetus measured behind at 8 weeks. D&C performed outside of the clinic.
How competent was Anate Brauer at LGBTQ+ care?
There is so much untapped potential at many of the larger clinics to find ways in which they can personalize treatment for the LGBTQIA+ community. The demand for fertility treatment is increasing. More queer people are seeking treatment rather than spending time, effort, money on at-home inseminations. The numbers would improve exponentially if that very community was not shuffled into this mix of predominantly infertile heterosexual women and given the same formula for success. Dr. Brauer, while seemingly open to same sex and queer fertility treatment, does not go out of her way with any particular nods of support or proclimations of being supportive of the queer community. There is a level of respect from her though.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed). (Assigned nurse: Deborah Lurie)
The nursing staff were some of the best. Each of them had their nuances, characteristic behaviors and attributes, but overall as a team, they were some of the best, very on top of the portal with regard to response time and answering questions, and often times more compassionate and empathetic than the RE's. The staff in general at SGF screams EFFICIENT.
Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
This is a larger chain clinic, so they are backed by decades of experience and credentials, yet the Manhattan location is newer and so there is still a lot of potential to feel seen and heard more than those longer established clinics. The majority of the nurses and staff are cheerful, understand fertility treatment and the various people that would seek treatment. They will remember you by name, and have this inate ability (nearly all of them) to remember details too! I didn't experience this myself, but I would see that they provided meds if they had them to patients who failed to order enough or didn't have any left and relied on those patients to replenish later when they could for the next person. Just a small thing that could make a big difference to someone. They are currently in the middle of transitioning one of the RE's to the brooklyn location. So there are 3 RE's, one of which whose attention and presence is being pulled to the brooklyn location, one of which his reviews here on Fertility IQ speak for themselves and I can vouch are not untrue, and the last of which can't carry the patient load on her own! You are going to want to work mainly with Dr. Brauer and Dr. Setton, so, there are some challenges with scheduling. When it regards procedures that are so time sensitive such as retrievals, IUI's, natural cycle transfers, this is a deal breaker. You will have to repeatedly ask them to upload your lab results. It won't matter how many times you have asked before, they will do it happily and willingly, but they almost never will just upload them on their own. You can ask to perform labwork (and in some cases, I would overhear, even monitoring) outside of the office if it's more convenient for you at a labcorp or quest diagnostic. This is definitely a benefit.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
Monitoring at SGF Manhattan was made easy. The hours generally go until 10AM, but on occassion, when necessary and if it could be accomodated, you could be seen until 11AM (though not preferable). This was a huge convenience for me and my long commute to the clinic and work hours. In addition, the monitoring hours are performed within a window, so while an appointment is advised, you could, if you had to, just show up.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
We had a high duductible every year, and sometimes it seemed like the clinic tried to hold off on our procedures that could have taken place end of year when insurance would fully cover them for the new year. That aspect was definitely questionable, or just coincidence. However, our insurance covered the majority of the costs associated with our IVF retrievals and transfers. I do not recommend having genetics testing post D&C done with SGF who use NATERA. I would advise against it. We are still disputing charges with them and they are not efficient or helpful at all.
As far as the out of pocket costs with SGF, I did look to see what our insurance was billed vs. what was paid, and the OOP expenses are definitely competitive. They are not as pricey as some other clinics, but not on the lower end either. They are average costs for IVF. However, SGF does offer programs that could be very beneficial for those paying OOP such as shared risk.
Describe Anate Brauer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
Dr. Brauer follows the recommendations set forth vby ASMR for eSET. In my particular case, due to PPROM, we never were keen on implanting more than one embryo at a time both because I was successfully implanting and wanted to give each embryo a chance on its own, but also because of the risks of a twin pregnancy with someone who already suffered PPROM at 18 weeks. However, I do believe if we sincerely wanted to and were okay with it, Dr. Brauer would have okayed multimpe embryo transfer of our untested embryos.

Dr. Brauer is energetic, knowledgeable, and communicative...put us at ease through a frank but encouraging assessment of our situation and a sound proposed path forward. New, clean, beautiful, welcoming facility enviroment and great staff support [at Shady Grove Fertility]. They truly care about their patients. Best yet, not too crowded since it's relatively new. It's close to multiple mid-town Manhattan train lines. So it's super convenient.
How was your experience with Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
We went to Dr. Brauer after repeated failed IUI (4 times), and IVF (3 times) at a different center where the last cycle resulted in an ectopic pregnancy. We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility but seemed according to the embryologist unable to grow day-5 blastocytes. My wife was 37 and I was 47 at the time. We were desperate and had mixed expectation when we first reached out to Shady Grove. We were at a point in life where we had to consider backup options in our fertility journey.
At first consultation, Dr. Brauer quickly put us at ease through a frank but encouraging assessment of our situation and a sound proposed path forward. She was warm, direct and transparent (which we desperately needed after multiple rounds of disappointment). We followed her advice with 2 wildly successful egg retrieval. That turned into 4 good quality frozen PGS normal day-5 embryos and 3 low-grade mosaics, one of whom is happily with us in a healthy week-13 pregnancy.
Dr. Brauer is energetic, knowledgeable, and communicative. She gives honest feedback and is there to listen and support. She truly cares about her patients. Compared to multiple doctors (from other centers of excellence) we had before, Dr. Bauer has IVF expertise and clinical intuition head and shoulders above her peers’. She is supported by amazing staff (e.g., Debs) and embryologists (George) who are compassionate, caring and truly do magic.
We cannot recommend her and her practice enough to other couples going through this challenging fertility process. Dr. Brauer and her office can be the long-awaited hope you have been looking for.

Describe your experience with Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
New, clean, beautiful, welcoming facility enviroment and great staff support. They truly care about their patients. Best yet, not too crowded since it's relatively new. It's close to multiple mid-town Manhattan train lines. So it's super convenient.

[Dr. Aelion Brauer is] very cheerful and positive, but at the same time give you a realistic expectation. She does speak very fast, which sometimes make you feel like you are being rushed, but seems that it just the way she talks, because she always answer your questions thoroughly...modified the protocol to Estrogen patch protocol, and this time we got 1 euploid embryo. The embryo was transferred, and I'm currently, 28 weeks pregnant with a baby girl!!
The nurses are very sweet and helpful [at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center]. They give on-time updates, and answer questions to the best to their ability. I think the nurses are the best...Monitoring hours are between 7 - 9 AM. It can get very crowded in the morning, but I don't have problems during my time there. The longest I've waited was about 30 minutes, and that wasn't very often...They have 3 locations, which is very convenient, and multiple doctors. You would be assigned to one primary doctor, but if your primary doctor is not available, they will assign you to another. Seems like this clinic is pretty well-staffed.

She tends to talk fast when explaining things. So, if you need time to digest, make sure you ask her to slow down.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center?
Dr. Brauer is very sweet, gentle, and she truly cares about her patient. She encourage me not to give up after the failed IUI, and 1 IVF cycle. She explains the procedure thoroughly with me and my husband.
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center and their degree of success.
We did 3 IUIs with clomid that were unsuccessful. We move forward with IVF cycle with birth control pill, that resulted in 1 aneuploid embryo, and 1 highly mosaic embryo after PGS test. So, we decide not to proceed with transfer, but did another IVF cycle. For the 2nd IVF cycle, dr. Brauer modified the protocol to Estrogen patch protocol, and this time we got 1 euploid embryo. The embryo was transferred, and I'm currently, 28 weeks pregnant with a baby girl!!

Based on the insurance billing, looks like IVF cycle is about $10-11K per cycle, not including the medications. Medications is around $4-6K per cycle.
Describe Anate Brauer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center.
From day one, I felt that Dr. Brauer listened to me and reviewed my chart from the other hospital. She kept adjusting and tweaking my treatment plan (protocols) throughout the year that I worked with her. She was warm, kind, compassionate and sincere. She was a shoulder to cry on with bad news and the person screaming the loudest with good news. I was beyond fortunate to have met her. Her dedication to helping people get pregnant is evident.
The offices [Greenwich] are bright, cheerful and warm. The other patients in the waiting room acknowledge each other and say hello. Convenient parking. Enough chairs in the waiting room- when I went to a NYC clinic with a satellite office in the burbs, sometimes there were not enough chairs for everyone to sit. It made the waiting room uncomfortable....The nurses in the Tuckahoe office were the best. They were kind, compassionate and patient in explaining results to me, scheduling appts at my convenience and answering my questions. They were readily accessible. The called me back in timely fashion.

From the moment I walked into the Tuckahoe office, I felt at home. The atmosphere is warm, inviting and calming. The office staff knew my name and addressed me fondly each time I arrived. I did not feel like a number. I felt like they were my biggest cheerleaders. I went to a NYC "factory" IVF clinic and no one could care less about me let alone know anything about my history.

Luckily my IUI were covered and I had 3 IVF covered with insurance. I only had to pay for copays including office visits and medications.
Describe Anate Brauer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center.
I was an older patient and the rationale for single embryo transfer was explained in detail with me- ie risks to the mother and baby. In the end, I only had a single embryo to transfer.
Dr. Brauer is confident and backed by credentials. I appreciate her directness and ability to be aggressive. But for me, I felt like my diagnosis and treatment was all following a protocol without a real consideration for my unique situation and reaction to meds. I've gone through each cycle with a lot of doubt about it actually working... and as someone paying 100% out of pocket, it is a tough decision to continue coming back without the confidence that Dr. Brauer is considering me, specifically, as a patient.
[Greenwich Fertility's] Strengths: Easy to schedule appointments, online portal with all test results Weaknesses: rotating doctors and nurses, the only time you can speak with your doctor is to make a follow up appointment, otherwise you will speak through a nurse, and when you speak with a nurse (not necessarily one who knows your situation), hours are M-F, 7:30am-5pm only...Each interaction is brief and because of the way the clinic is managed, half the time you will see a different doctor anyway. The other doctors prefer you ask questions to 'your doctor', which ultimately means speaking with a nurse.

Don't be afraid to keep pushing back and asking questions, even if Dr. Brauer acts like your question is silly.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center?
My diagnosis was very generic, without much interest in root cause. I felt like she was just interested in prescribing the same course of treatment for everyone. The other doctors prefer you ask questions to 'your doctor', which ultimately means speaking with a nurse.
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center and their degree of success.
Dr. Brauer used very standard protocols to induce ovulation. She started me with Clomid + Ovidrel + IUI + endometrin. Then, because my lining was thin switched me to letrozole + Ovidrel + IUI + endometrin. When I asked to try a timed intercourse cycle, she only recommended letrezol because "I would ovulate on my own" (which I didn't) we also used 1mg Estradiol to improve my lining, starting when my follicles were >14mm. In that final cycle I never ovulated and she recommended I consider IVF.
None resulted in pregnancy.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center.
There were two nurses I really liked (Molly and Alisa), the others were cold and rude to me. The nurses appeared to rotate along with the doctors, so I never knew which nurse I would see.

About $3500 for an IUI cycle. $4500 for my failed cycle with extra monitoring.
From the get go I felt like Dr. Brauer was the right doctor for me. Everyone in my life tried to get me to go to NYC but my gut (which is very accurate) always felt confident in Dr. Brauer's care. Her personality made me want to grab a cup of coffee with her yet her brilliance was evident. Dr. Brauer called me personally for my exciting positive pregnancy test and my disappointing news of a chemical pregnancy. Both times she shared in the emotion of the call, super excited for the good news and leaving me with a positive outlook after the bad. I have trusted Dr. Brauer's game plan implicitly and have complete faith she will get me pregnant.
The greenwich office [of Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center] front desk is perfectly fine but Dana at the Tuckahoe location is on point. She is so knowledgeable and very friendly. It does not get better than her.... Molly [a nurse] is absolute perfection. She and Dr. Brauer appear to be a real team. Molly is friendly and on top of her game always making sure I leave with clear direction for next steps.

Be present through the fertility journey ..take one day at a time
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Anate Brauer at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center?
When I ran into Dr. Brauer at Whole Foods she gave me a hug. It doesn't get more human feeling than that. In the office, we will connect on a person level like notice we share the same nail color then get down to business.
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center and their degree of success.
So far I have done 3 iui. Each with clomid and ovidrel trigger shot. I usually have about 3 mature follicles. One IUI resulted in a chemical pregnancy.

So far my appointments were mostly co pay only with the exception of the actual IUI which I believe was $725...IVF is $10,500
I really felt that Dr Brauer was personally invested in getting me pregnant. She hugged me before the retrieval and again after the positive pregnancy test. She shared details of her own story that put me at ease and allayed my fears. We had a very straight forward and successful IVF, but her upbeat attitude told me that even if we had a setback she'd have a plan b and another path to success.
It's inevitable that you won't always see the same doctor because they operate more than one location. As a result some of my key procedures [at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center] were performed by other doctors, all of whom I was meeting for the first time during the procedure. While that was frustrating, I've been told it's standard at all the clinics. Most of the doctors were great. There is one that has a terrible bedside manner, although i'm told he's an excellent technical doctor. Having him perform a procedure isn't a bad thing knowing that he's very good at what he does, you'll just need to call Dr. Brauer later to get the information (and compassion) you're looking for.

Working with her office means taking some appointments with other doctors in the practice and they do not all have her bedside manner.

The office was wonderful. The nurses were all quick to share their own stories as a means of reassuring me of the probability of success. Dr Brauer was always quick to return a call or see me whenever i needed to come in. Her bedside manner put me totally at ease. She communicated all steps in the process in our first meeting and at every step reassured me that this will work- and she was right!
Describe the protocols Anate Brauer used in your cycles at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center and their degree of success.
I had a 100% tubal blockage after a ruptured appendix and subsequent abdominal infection. There was no discussion of IUI or other treatment options. I began with 10ish days of birth control, then began a stimulation cycle of gonal and medipure. I had an hcg trigger, a successful retrieval of 11 eggs, which developed into 9 initial embroys and four 5 day embryos. We transferred one fresh embryo and froze the other 3 for the future. The transfer was successful and i am now 9 weeks pregnant.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center. (Assigned nurse: Kate)
The entire staff was fantastic. They are always asking how I feel and offering advice on how to cope with the side effects of treatment. I never had to call and chase anyone. They called when they said they would and always gave results promptly and with full details. They were happy to sit down and go through all the financials and review our insurance coverage. The entire office made the process as easy as it could be.

The office feels very private. There were rarely more than 1 or 2 other people in the waiting room when I was there. I rarely waited more than 10 minutes to be seen and once they called me to say the Dr. was running behind and to come later. They didn't want me to sit in the waiting room for an hour so they let me reschedule for later the same day which I really appreciated. Monitoring was fast and I expected it to be a bigger time burden than it really was.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Anate Brauer at Greenwich Fertility and IVF Center.
I believe the total cost was close to $20,000 (including drugs, copays, egg storage, etc), but fortunately our insurance coverage was substantial and our out of pocket was less than $5,000.
Dr. Brauer has great energy and really provides a personalized approach...I really appreciated how she is no-BS and very direct...over the moon at the results at the end which in part was because she managed my expectations the entire way through...really does care and when I freaked out right before the retrieval she was concerned and took time to calm me down...very positive experience with great results for my elective embryo freezing!
Loved the clinic [ Shady Grove Fertility]. It was always so easy to get an appointment - literally they asked ME what times worked best always. Very rare for NYC. Beautiful waiting room and everything was extra clean which I appreciated during Covid...very positive experience with great results for my elective embryo freezing!

Absolutely loved Dr. Brauer and I've already recommended 4 friends to her who are currently undergoing or starting treatment. Costs for treatment and procedure, anesthesia, medicine at outside pharmacy (this was the big one - about $22k since I went through insurance), PGS genetic testing and storage.
Dr Brauer didn't make me feel valid in my concerns or disappointment. Seemed solely focused on pushing additional cycles without explaining my current protocol. Often felt I had to chase the clinic for additional details and never felt certain who i was supposed to direct my questions to...Very rarely saw Dr. Brauer during my treatment. Dr. Brauer made the experience of starting our family an amazing journey. She was compassionate about our "two mommy" home and supportive of our journey. She always answered our questions, big or small. In addition, she was available as our cheerleader and supporter, as well as the person to guide the whole process. When we found out we were pregnant, we were emotional that Dr. Brauer would not be part of the rest of journey but grateful that she made our dreams come true.
For the amount of time you spend in the office [Greenwich Fertility & IVF Center] during this process, it should feel comforting and this was!! Every member of the office staff, nursing staff and the doctors made you feel comfortable. Everything was personalized; I felt as thought they were part of the whole process from start to finish.... Dr. Brauer became a part of our family very quickly. We felt an immediate connection to her. Dr. Brauer listened to what we wanted and helped guide us on the path to achieve our goals.

The first cycle [with Dr. Anate Aelion Brauer] was fully monitored. After that, we moved on to 5mg of Letrozole days 3-7. During the Letrozole cycle, we found out that my husband has a robertsonian translocation. Dr. Brauer left it up to us if we wanted to continue with the cycle naturally. Ultimately we decided to move forward and pursue IVF if this does not work...really listen to me and was willing to jump right in to treatment and figuring out what was going on.

Dr. Brauer has a great bedside manner. She is always on time and, I’m my opinion, was aggressive in her persute of treatment (in the best way). She explains each step and lays out all of the options available. She seems to really focus on individualize care and not just applying the status quo

I felt Dr Brauer wasn't interested in trying to support a complicated case as mine...At 45 years old, never before pregnant, Dr. Brauer told me that it would be "unethical" for any doctor to try and help me undergo IVF due to my low AMH level...she continually tried to discourage me from pursuing IVF altogether with her aforementioned comments. I felt as though the only thing she cared about in my case was preserving her success rate by steering me away from her clinic...I felt demoralized about my experience with Dr Brauer and do not recommend her....
I think Shady Grove is probably a strong fit if you're a sure case with decent levels. Yet based on my personal experience as a challenging case, I would recommend finding a clinic that has experience with more complicated cases...The nurses who monitored me were kind and overall seemed to have great personalities...Dr Brauer more than once discouraged me from attempting IVF based on an AMH of .11 and follicle count of 7, although I had never previously been pregnant...
How was your experience with Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
I saw Dr Anate Brauer in early 2022, and it was an unprofessional and questionably unethical experience. At 45 years old, never before pregnant, Dr. Brauer told me that it would be "unethical" for any doctor to try and help me undergo IVF due to my low AMH level. Equal parts adamant and appalled, I pressed her on it and she agreed to "reconsider" working with me, depending on my follicle count. Within two weeks, I was in her office undergoing monitoring on Day 3 of my next cycle and pleased to learn I had several follicles. However, instead of shifting her position, as she said she would, Dr Brauer doubled down on what she first said. Not only did she wrongly quote to me the number of follicles found by her nurses as "only a "few" follicles (again, 7 was the count), but she also then shifted the goal post yet again, citing my elevated FSH number as the reason it wasn't "ethical" to work with me. Luckily, I moved on from Shady Grove and found other doctors. In the end, I felt Dr Brauer wasn't interested in trying to support a complicated case as mine. Yet instead of suggesting I find a clinic with the experience to support me, she continually tried to discourage me from pursuing IVF altogether with her aforementioned comments. I felt as though the only thing she cared about in my case was preserving her success rate by steering me away from her clinic. However, her words could've killed my morale and caused me to give up my IVF journey before I ever began. I felt demoralized about my experience with Dr Brauer and do not recommend her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
If you have a challenging case, I would recommend you go elsewhere for support. Dr Brauer more than once discouraged me from attempting IVF based on an AMH of .11 and follicle count of 7, although I had never previously been pregnant.

The nurses who monitored me were kind and overall seemed to have great personalities.

I think Shady Grove is probably a strong fit if you're a sure case with decent levels. Yet based on my personal experience as a challenging case, I would recommend finding a clinic that has experience with more complicated cases.
Dr. Brauer is the only doctor we had who actually knew what a balanced translocation was...appreciate that she flagged this as a problem...clearly very knowledgeable...Every conversation with Dr. Brauer was rushed...talks a mile a minute, which makes it difficult to process new information...felt like we were intruding anytime we had a question.
Shady Grove has a lovely ambiance...felt comfortable walking in...technicians who helped with my monitoring appointments were all very kind and efficient... nurses were phenomenal...only negative interaction I had with anyone at the clinic was the anesthesiologist who did the anesthesia for my first egg retrieval.

We felt as though Dr. Brauer didn't have much time for us. So maybe inquire about her caseload and how busy she is, before signing on.

Shady Grove has a lovely ambiance. I always felt comfortable walking in. The technicians who helped with my monitoring appointments were all very kind and efficient. The nurses were phenomenal. The only negative interaction I had with anyone at the clinic was the anesthesiologist who did the anesthesia for my first egg retrieval. I had COVID at the time, and he incorrectly suggested that I would wake up on a ventilator if I elected to go through with the procedure. He was awful.
She [Dr. Brauer] did many of my ultrasounds herself when she was in office, and always made me feel so comfortable. Specifically, before going into each retrieval surgery, she always put a warmed blanket over me and made me feel so safe and cozy during such a vulnerable moment. It’s details like that (just one among many) that make her stand out as a truly incredible human and doctor...So kind, personable, sweet and gentle. She and her staff were an absolute pleasure to work with....
Lily [nurse at Shady Grove Fertility New York] is wonderful! So kind, sweet, relatable and shared every joy and disappointment right by my side every step of the way...Short wait For monitoring, no wait for procedures (always on time), answer the phone SO fast and very responsive to all emails. I would recommend SGF to anyone who is undergoing fertility treatment...

She [Dr. Anate Aelion Brauer] definitely preferred to transfer one embryo vs 2 but due to my quality she was comfortable transferring two...She was very delicate when discussing our plan. She hugged us during both the happy and sad times. I felt like she was on this journey with us...she is very clear with her explanations of what to expect and we worked as a team to come up with a plan that everyone was comfortable with. I cannot think of anything negative to say about her. I thought she was so great that we went to her again for baby #2

Everyone was very friendly. I had an issue with payment and my insurance and they didn’t harass me about paying. Dr. Brauer is very empathetic in her approach and centers her recommendations around how you are feeling as a patient, rather than just focusing on the clinical aspects of care. She takes the time to call me personally to share good and bad news, and I can tell she is invested in the outcome...While she has strong opinions about certain aspects of ART, she was open to my input as a patient and allowed me to weigh in on the course of treatment at certain points, which I appreciated.
SGF NY is a great clinic. It's run very smoothly with knowledgeable, capable staff. The nursing staff is superb and the doctors are compassionate and trustworthy. As with any clinic, it's important to advocate for yourself, ask a lot of questions, and reach out proactively if you are ever feeling confused or unsure about your treatment plan. They are busy, so you need to make the most of the limited time you have with your RE when you're in the office for a clinical visit.

I went through several medicated IVF cycles using my own eggs, but we never wound up with any normal embryos to transfer. We then moved on to donor IVF, undergoing a fresh cycle and then FET with one of the embryos that resulted from that cycle. This transfer was fortunately successful.

My insurance denied coverage for IVF with my own eggs, so we paid for a package of two cycles for about $35,000. We then enrolled in the shared risk donor IVF program (with FET) which cost $41,000.
Describe Anate Brauer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
To my knowledge I don't believe Shady Grove Fertility allows for multiple embryo transfer. I don't have a problem with this because I know multiple pregnancies are inherently high risk.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
On one occasion, my doctor called the wrong cell phone number with my fertilization results, so I did not get them until the following day. It was truly an accident, though.
Dr. Brauer was a caring and warm provider. I always felt like she was invested in what we were doing and in my results. She always took the time to answer my questions and clarify any confusion. She provided positive support while not giving unrealistic expectations...she adjusted my protocol from cycle to cycle, and even within a cycle if it seemed necessary....
I went to a nearby and highly qualified clinic before coming to Shady Grove. I truly felt like just a number at the other clinic. I suppose it doesn't really matter if they get the job done, but SGF got the job done while treating me like a human with feelings...Debs (Deborah) was always supportive and available for questions if needed. For four egg retrievals and one embryo transfer, we paid about $60,000. I believe $20,000 of this was for medication. It should be noted that this was with insurance coverage for the first two cycles, and one cycle where I spent significantly less than otherwise on medication because I had access to leftover medication from someone else.
Describe Anate Brauer's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed).
This wasn't something we discussed. I had two viable embryos after 4 retrievals, and wouldn't have wanted to implant both even if she'd supported it. I do know that I'm already a high risk pregnancy so I don't expect that any doctor would have supported that choice.
Dr Brauer was always attentive, thoughtful, and compassionate in care and communication. She knew me, my story and my goals...Over 7 cycles, she learned my body, understood my reactions and adjusted to ensure we stayed on track. When she couldn’t be there, she gave specific directions to the supporting doctors and made sure my journey was always a priority.

Dr Brauer is one of a kind. She is a RE nerd, who genuinely enjoys the work and research she’s involved in. Upbeat and energetic, she carried me through some tough moments. Either Dr B or the doctor on call (Singer or later Setton) completed every single one of my ultrasounds. She called when she said she would and was easy to make an appointment with if I had a question during off times. Over 7 cycles, she learned my body, understood my reactions and adjusted to ensure we stayed on track. When she couldn’t be there, she gave specific directions to the supporting doctors and made sure my journey was always a priority.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
Be clear with her about your fertility background, express yourself goals and ask her for her honest assessment. She’ll give it to you straight and base her guidance on science and research.

Antagonist approach. Some with estrogen priming (patch) and most without, once she realized my body responded similarly under both conditions. I started with lower meds (300 Gonal/ 150 Menapur) and finished my last 4 cycle with 300 Gonal/ 300 Menapur due to age and DOR. I produced more eggs than normal for my age but struggled with egg quality. She encouraged PGS due to age and insurance coverage and I trusted her the entire way. I completed 3 saline sonograms, one ERA and PGS testing on all 5 day embryos because she knew I trusted science.

How was your experience with Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
I have had an extremely positive patient experience with Dr. Brauer for the last 4 years. When I first came to Dr. Brauer I had experienced years of infertility including multiple failed medicated IUI procedures. Since my diagnosis has been unexplained infertility it was very difficult for me to grasp what could possibly be wrong. From the very beginning Dr. Brauer explained various options open to my husband and I, and thoroughly answered all of our questions and eased all of our concerns. She is very clinically knowledgeable, but also has a way to make you feel as if you are lifelong friends and put your worried mind at ease right away. I always felt very comfortable going to her with any concerns and she took the time to ensure I was comfortable with every step of our fertility journey. I completely trust all of her medical decisions and felt at ease during the medication process and procedures, outside of the normal nerves that follow any fertility treatment plan. I would highly recommend Dr. Brauer to anyone seeking fertility advice or treatment.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Anate Brauer at Shady Grove Fertility New York (closed)?
I would advise them to trust Dr. Brauer and keep an open mind during the entire journey. Fertility treatments come with a lot of emotion and its important to have 100% trust in your medical team.

The wait time at this clinic is minimal which was very important to my while going through this process. Because you have so many appointments, and I have a full time job and a family, I really appreciated that they do everything possible to accommodate appointment times and stick to them. I also appreciated the extremely fast turn around time for responses to your portal questions. I found the portal very easy to use and very convenient. I waited less than 24 hours for a response (usually not even that long). One thing regarding the clinic I would describe as a weakness is the billing department. Although this has nothing to do with patient care, I find the system in which to handle billing questions difficult to use and not intuitive.
Dr. Brauer is friendly and warm without ever being condescending or sugar coating...takes a straightforward approach to getting the results but always listens to your concerns and adjusts as needed to suit you...kind and always upbeat and never lets you get discouraged...planned to do a fresh transfer but [she] saw that my hormone levels were not ideal so we delayed to a frozen transfer.
