Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr Beltsos is an expert. However, often with such extreme expertise a doctors bedside manner decreases. That's not the case for Dr Beltsos. She's warm, caring, understanding and able to cater her delivery of information to our knowledge needs. She takes the time to ensure we have every opportunity to ask questions and are clear on next steps...able to cater her delivery of information to our level of knowledge. We often come prepared with many questions, having done our research, and she's extremely knowledgable in providing us with answers.
Kindbody is large and sometimes its hard to feel like just another patient. However, with scale comes benefits like expertise and access which was import for us. As they go through their merger they're ironing out the process which I'm sure will improve over time. Throughout they've been very open to feedback to help them improve the efficiency of their process...[nurse] Bre went above and beyond to support us and facilitate our egg donation process. She was extremely proactive in her communication and made every effort to help us to keep the process moving without delay. She has also been a great emotional support throughout. We were faced with a challenging Egg Donor Agency relationship and with Bre’s help we were able to remove the agency from the equation and deal directly with the egg donor to achieve a positive outcome.

When I pushed for evidence base to guide future treatments, Dr Beltos had an intern do a research study. The idea that she was so ill informed caused me to lose faith in the science of the choices made by this doctor and the practice...If you would like a doctor who is very caring and gives a good “listening face” and does appear to emotionally care, she’s your lady. If you’d like actual science and information and personalized care, seek elsewhere.
I felt like if you had zero complications, you’d be fine. If you had any complications, they [Kindbody] were baffled and just used the same protocols. And, when issues do arise, the entire office (whether doctor or nurses) handles it poorly with poor communication...I felt like a number due to the medical protocols designed. My body reacted very unusually and instead of making adaptions, their typical protocol was followed as if I were reacting exactly the same as all other women.
How was your experience with Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute)?
My experience as a patient is that I was spoken to constantly in extremely positive metaphors and when reality didn’t go well I was informed “well we just keep trying” as if actually examining why things didn’t go well was a waste of time. When I pushed for evidence base to guide future treatments, Dr Beltos had an intern do a research study. The idea that she was so ill informed caused me to lose faith in the science of the choices made by this doctor and the practice.

Describe the protocols Angeline Beltsos used in your cycles at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute) and their degree of success.
It’s really hard for me to remember everything I was on, but after leaving Vios I met with 4 separate ivf doctors across Chicago and explained all the medicines I was on and each one was utterly shocked at the heavy use of medicine for a healthy 32 year old. I also had ohss quite severely and there was nothing done to prevent this even though the protocol could have been modified or even stopped as it was seen how poorly my body was reacting. I produced 42 eggs for retrieval (I was told it was their second highest record at that time…) and then when I later had embryos pgs tested after two failed transfers, all embryos did not survive the thaw. Instead of being called by a doctor in this highly unusual circumstance, I was called by a nurse for payment information. I do not have medical faith in their embryo storage or their ability to treat women as individuals. The reaction my body has was severe and at no time in the process was I informed of the risks.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Nurses tried but they got confused all the time and often provided contradictory information.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Strengths - the sell Weaknesses - treating women as individuals with unique medical needs and using research to support decisions. I’ve discussed my personal experience at length and feel like I was merely assured if we tried hard enough it would be fine. I have a hard time believing someone who never mentioned (and had to have an intern provide) research regarding pcos and ohss, both very common for women. I felt like if you had zero complications, you’d be fine. If you had any complications, they were baffled and just used the same protocols. And, when issues do arise, the entire office (whether doctor or nurses) handles it poorly with poor communication.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
I had 12 frozen embryos that were pgs tested died. And, I was informed by a nurse asking me for more money. I had to irately complain that I’d like some kind of information in order to even know why this happened. And, sadly, now that I did my own research and met with 4 separate ivf doctors in Chicago for additional opinions and to switch clinics, I know that the protocol she put me out contributed to this with current research to support that such heavy egg production as myself (42 retrieved at ivf) usually doesn’t produce viable embryos. None of this information was communicated in any way. If anything, they kept telling me how lucky I was to have so many.

Such a caring doctor [Dr. Angeline Beltsos] who really wants to help. Great bedside manner and talks to you as a person not just another patient. She went above and beyond for me on an insurance matter that I had no joy in sorting out. She made it happen for me and we even made a short video to thank the insurance company.
The front desk girls [at Vios] would always try to get me an appointment at a time that suited me and I really appreciated this. Billing is an issue and i repeatedly sent emails that went unanswered which is unacceptable. Yet when they want their money they each out all the time! My advice to anyone going to any new clinic is always keep on top of your Care and what’s going on. Be your own advocate. Ask lots and lots of questions and have your nurse explain things if you are unsure. The portal service is 95% well run, again just keep on at them for answers. All nurses I dealt with were all pleasant and informative. Always know what the plan is and keep up to date with all your meds.

Describe the protocols Angeline Beltsos used in your cycles at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute) and their degree of success.
1st retrieval we started mid cycle which unfortunately had to be cancelled due to poor response. I brought up concerns with starting mid cycle and she took this on board. Next time we primed with testosterone patches almost 1 month. During stims which are very high doses of gonal f to start with (475iu for first few days) we also included omnitrope, 25 units I think. That retrieval was my best, 3 retrieved, all mature and 1 to blast. Second cycle we primed with omnitrope for around 1/2 weeks then same stims again. On paper this was looking like my best cycle. We retrieved 5 eggs, 3 mature and fertilized but no blasts or anything to transfer.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute). (Assigned nurse: Daniella )
My nurse was Daniella and she was really nice. Gave me info in a timely manner. Sometimes I had to double check some things I felt weren’t right and thankfully I did or mistakes would have occurred. Thankfully I knew what to expect. On the whole I do rate Daniella as a nurse and looked after my Care. Lindsay was my ultrasound tech and she was lovely too. Always told me what the findings were during scans and I found this very beneficial.

I have had to follow up with medication ordering as my rx wasn’t called to the pharmacy. Once i noticed it, it was dealt with. Medication list for after my transfer was wrong as they printed off a previous FET protocol and thankfully i noticed and it was adjusted.

Dr Beltsos is genuine, informative, willing to listen and answers all questions thoroughly. She took a more aggressive approach to my treatment given my age which I appreciated. Dr Beltsos came highly referred by two ex-patients - both successful in conceiving over the age of 40. The only draw back is her accessibility. I tend to see her nurse practitioner more for consults and discussions.
We mainly used the Wicker Park location [of Vios Fertility Inst]. It's bright and welcoming with parking in the back which is a nice bonus. The front desk was always friendly and know who I am when I walk in the door. The only times I had to wait long were Friday mornings and a few times for the doctor. The phlebotomist is wonderful and tries to be gentle given all of the blood draws. The ultrasound techs couldn't be nicer.

The one-on-one attention I receive from the nurse practitioner, nurses, ultrasound techs and front desk is outstanding. Most of them know me by name and seem knowledgable about where I am in my treatment. When I do see Dr Beltsos in person, she is always very warm and attentive.
Describe the protocols Angeline Beltsos used in your cycles at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute) and their degree of success.
I went through 2 IUI cycles with Letrozole. I've done 1 egg retrieval with a combination of Gonal F, Menopur, Omnitrope, Dexamethasone and Cetrotide. Assuming due to my age, she starts the doses high and then tapers off based on the ultrasound monitoring results. Out of 12 follicles, we got 7 eggs, 5 mature, 3 fertilized and made it to blastos. Currently awaiting PGS testing results.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
The nursing staff at Vios is amazing. They are understanding, helpful and willing to answer any questions - big or small. And I asked a lot of questions. The only challenge is sometimes my information was a bit disorganized. Certain documents were not found in the system when we had submitted them multiple times. Also, a few times I left messages and didn't get a response until the next day. However, if it was urgent, I always called back and got someone on the line.

Dr Beltsos is truly a Doctor who believes in the power of positive attitude. She is incredibly smart and also explains everything so that the process seems straightforward. She has loved on us during our setbacks and celebrated our victory. She is the doctor I tell everyone to go see. ... She smiles, hugs you, and tells you that you are beautiful. She’s been through the process so she knows what it’s like.
Vios is mainly downtown but the outer offices are convenient for bloodwork, monitoring appointment and smaller procedures that don’t have to take place downtown Chicago at their IVF lab. I love that they now offer acupuncture on transfer days. ... sometimes I’ve run into issues with the billing department acting very rude. Sometimes a little softness is needed when people are paying THOUSANDS of dollars out of pocket.

3 rounds of IUI with clomid per insurance. 1 retrieval. PGS 8 embryos. 4 normal. 1 FET (estrogen patch/PIO/ endometrin) successful in 2016. Uterine polyp removal spring 19, FET 2 canceled due to ovarian cyst, FET 2 take 2 resulted in chemical pregnancy. FET 3 was performed with an immune suppression protocol (Pepcid, prednisone, claritin) failed. Next up is ERA and final FET before another retrieval.
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute). (Assigned nurse: Melissa)
Very compassionate but sometimes forgetful. I had a nurse forget to tell me to step down a dose. I had a nurse wish me a good day after telling me I was having a chemical pregnancy. Before our retrieval I had nurses phrase scheduled appointments like they might not happen but that hasn’t happened in several years at Vios.

Dr. Beltsos set the tone from consultation by really making me feel like "we" were going to do everything we can to get me pregnant. I started an antagonist protocol after 5 weeks of birth control. My AMH was a bit high so they stimmed me for about 12 days and because I responded as expected to medications, there wasn't any real alterations to the protocol. They just added other medications. I was able to produce enough eggs to freeze for the following month's frozen embryo transfer and save the remaining 3 for future use.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
They seemed over worked and rushed, this isn't a reflection of the quality of care. They still managed to get questions answered and do nurse duties but very quickly if you remembered a question shortly after they were already busy.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
I'm not exactly sure who is at fault with scheduling but most of the appointments I made took a minimum of an hour. Consultation took 3 hours (45 mins of talking), transfer took 3 hours, one monitoring/lab appointment took an hour and a half. Most of the monitoring ranged from 10-45 min wait when I was the only body in the waiting room too. The receptionists seemed to be more compassionate and caring than the nurses were in my opinion. I didn't know all the nurses and can only name a handful of people because their exceptional professionalism stood out.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
I have incredible coverage through insurance so a round about amount from beginning to end is about 4-600. Generally medications were covered and all treatment, the only thing we had to pay was copays.
Describe Angeline Beltsos's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
She didn't recommend more than one unless the grade or quality wasn't super great but thankfully my husband and I make perfect embryos, we just have a hard time getting to that point. So, we only transferred one.

I can only assume the reason treatments would get confused at times would be because the amount of patients that are being taken on at once. They always clarified everything before moving forward.

With high quality embryos and low maternal age, she [Dr. Beltsos] recommended one single embryo transfer...She was very caring in person and I never really felt rushed with her. She hugs you and is warm. But I only saw her initially, she popped in a consult after PGS results and freezing, and at transfer...You could tell she was stressed at times due to her rapidly growing clinics but it never interferes with my treatment per say. She was not available for my retrieval but was able to do my transfer for me. I saw her beginning and end of treatment but not during any monitoring appointments.
The wicker park office [of Vios Fertility Institute] is calming and nice. The receptionist team always knew who you were and were very professional and responsive. There did tend to be waits for monitoring even when the clinic didn’t appear to be very busy...I had a primary nurse but didn’t always see her. Felt like a saw a lot of nurses but it was tough to keep them straight. All were helpful but never made a strong connection to any. She had a younger APN working there who was very nice and informative. I got to meet with her a few times.

Describe the protocols Angeline Beltsos used in your cycles at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute) and their degree of success.
Did antagonist protocol due to overstimming in the past and having a high AMH. Triggered with small amount of hcg and large dose of Lupron. I still got OHSS but not as severe after previous ER with another clinic. Needed to then do frozen transfer.

Obtaining the meds through insurance was difficult at times. The office didn’t precert as they should and at times had to drive the process to get my meds paid for and receive them on time. There were times I had to borrow meds from the clinic as the insurance wasn’t dealt with on time to get them.

I highly recommend Dr. Beltos. She's super smart, aggressive and incredibly caring! She's a trailblazer in what she'll try and is super up to speed on the latest research.... After 10 transfers with a gestational carrier, and 6 retrievals done by me and a late miscarriage at 16 weeks, I was emotionally exhausted. Dr. Beltsos and team, not only listened to me but were aggressive in treatment and really truly cared about me along the way.
Vios is new and growing rapidly...The office space is really nice and definitely has a calming vibe...My favorite part was that you could meet with the nurses right after labs in a consult room to discuss results and next steps.... I've never felt more taken care of by Dr. Beltsos and staff. They go the extra mile for you, and truly make you feel like you are a part of the team. They are extremely open to your thoughts and opinions
How was your experience with Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute)?
I came do Vios at a very vulnerable time in my fertility journey. After 10 transfers with a gestational carrier, and 6 retrievals done by me and a late miscarriage at 16 weeks, I was emotionally exhausted. Dr. Beltsos and team, not only listened to me but were aggressive in treatment and really truly cared about me along the way.

I highly recommend Dr. Beltos. She's super smart, aggressive and incredibly caring! She's a trailblazer in what she'll try and is super up to speed on the latest research. I tell everyone I talk to in the fertility world to come prepared with questions and she's no different. She will never rush you, the only downside to that is sometimes you have to wait a bit at her office or for phone consults, but I'd rather that, than feel rushed in the critical time you have with the doctor.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute)?
After being a fertility patient for over 6 years (2 years with our first, 4 years trying to conceive a 2nd child), I've never felt more taken care of by Dr. Beltsos and staff. They go the extra mile for you, and truly make you feel like you are a part of the team. They are extremely open to your thoughts and opinions ( I know a lot after being a patient for so long!), and really do care for their patients like no other fertility clinic I've seen.
Describe the protocols Angeline Beltsos used in your cycles at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute) and their degree of success.
IVF: my last 4 cycles have been a bit all over the place so Dr. Beltsos wanted to get really aggressive as she knew my emotional and financial resources to keep going were growing thin. Meds: Primed with estrogen patches and pills, and testerone Lupron for 2 weeks before stimming Follistim (started with a very high dose, 750 for 2 days)...then it went down to 250/150 for the remainder menopur was mixed in half way through gainerelex triggered with ovidrel
Describe your experience with your nurse at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute). (Assigned nurse: Fran Black)
Fran was amazing! After working with many, many nurses over the years, Fran went so far above and beyond. I knew all along she wanted this to work for us, and I never felt like she was on a workday schedule where I couldn't get her after 5p or on weekends. She was amazing!!!
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Vios is new and growing rapidly. There aren't a ton of locations and the NS office (in Glenview) is only open a few days a week. With that said, I traveled down to wicker park and it wasn't a big deal. The office space is really nice and definitely has a calming vibe to it which is nice when you are getting poked all the time. :) My favorite part was that you could meet with the nurses right after labs in a consult room to discuss results and next steps. Such a nice change of pace from having to wait all day to hear from your nurse!

IVF was around $15,000 but that included some costs for screening our surrogate.

I had one time where a med wasn't ordered in. While it was an error, Vios had the medicine on hand and gave it to us for free. Working with a gestational carrier, on a few occasions they forgot to update me, but I reminded them and they ironed it out.

Dr. Beltsos met with me and my partner to explain everything. She answered all of our questions. She always took the time we needed and never made us feel rushed!...We started with 2 rounds of IUI. These were both unsuccessful. Due to my age and low number of eggs, we proceeded to IVF. Unfortunately, we had multiple unsuccessful rounds of IVF (fresh and frozen transfers). Ultimately, we decided to go with an egg donor. We did a fresh transfer from the egg donor and froze the rest of the embryos...Our doctor believes in helping you achieve one healthy baby, which is what we wanted and achieved.
Vios is great! I definitely felt as though I received more individual attention at Vios ... The nursing staff at Vios is excellent! Some of the nurses are more responsive than others, but after some persistence I was always able to get a response to my inquiries....I appreciated that I could schedule the appointments early (before work)....Dr. Beltsos is amazing! We did a fresh transfer from the egg donor and froze the rest of the embryos. We did PGS testing on the frozen embryos. Although the fresh transfer resulted in a pregnancy, we unfortunately miscarried at 6 weeks. However, since we did PGS testing, we were able to use the best frozen embryo for our next IVF cycle, which resulted in a pregnancy. We gave birth to a healthy baby girl earlier this year.

Dr. Beltsos is very knowledgeable and smart and warm. She will take the time to sit with you during your initial consultation and also for an IVF Checklist appointment. I also saw her when she did my saline ultrasound. But those are the only 3 times I've seen her and I've been going to the clinic for about 8 months. This may be totally normal because most of the time I'm there is for baseline and ultrasounds. She did diagnose me with endometriosis and PCOS, both of which I had no idea I had.
I love all the nurses [at Vios Fertility Institute], but there's a lot of them and they change every time you're there. There is now a patient portal that they ask you to send messages through. The nurses respond on there, but sometimes multiple nurses will respond to the same question with different answers. This becomes confusing and frustrating when you're trying to find out who called in a medication order and who will be following up on the medications. You will almost always meet with a nurse after your bloodworm and ultrasound and these experiences can vary from very rushed with little explanation as to how you're doing, to very detailed. But they are all very very nice!

I'm very grateful for her knowledge, confidence and convenient locations and ability to know what will work best. She did tell me very early on that IVF would probably be my best bet and I now realize she was right. I took the fertility treatments very slowly and as naturally as possible at first.

But they are all very very nice! This might seem silly also, but when they reply to messages on the portal, the grammar is very bad and it makes it look very unprofessional. I've been given instruction on medication changes with abbreviations and spelling errors and all lower case text. :/ This happens to be the norm unfortunately. Maybe a template should be used when replying to patients.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Strengths: cleanliness, location is great, parking is free and usually plentiful Weaknesses: not all phlebotomists check your name and label with blood which I require, communication through the portal is very informal and when lab results are uploaded there is no reference range posted next to them. So you have no idea if the numbers are good, bad, etc. I've seen other fertility sites that explain everything - this practice does not explain where you should be or what your numbers mean. They'll just upload the results and either call or message you with next steps. It would be nice to know where I should be during a certain time in my cycle or treatment. Reference ranges and more educational materials on each step would be a huge help.

most was insured, except for the cryofreezing of embryos, which was approximately $1200 for initial freezing and $500 each year thereafter for storage.

The system for ordering medications for IVF is very stressful and some nurses put a lot of the work on the patient in regards to contacting insurance, etc. Some nurses say they'll handle it. But you don't know which is doing what. As a first time IVF patient it was down to the day before my meds were to start when I finally had to make about 6 phone calls to get my meds ordered. It was very chaotic and poorly run. I think 1 nurse should be assigned the task for certain patients.

Due to the quick start, they were able to provide me with medication that had been donated to me until my insurance processed approvals. I was at the clinic at least weekly for blood work and ultrasound to monitor progress and for Dr. Beltsos to monitor how well my ovaries we're responding to the medication schedule. Due to the positive response my body had to the meds, I have mature eggs ready sooner than anticipated and Dr. Beltsos shifted my egg retrieval date from a week day to a Sunday morning.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Every nurse I have encountered at the clinic was very nice, professional, and compassionate. However, communication outside of the clinic (telephone or email) is somewhat challenging. But it seems they are working to correct this issue as they now have a coordinator.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Strengths of the clinic are that there are multiple locations in Illinois, Missouri and Wisconsin so if you are going to use a Gestational carrier your search can be broadened and stick with the same clinic you've built a relationship with. There are also multiple locations in the Chicago area which is sometimes a disadvantage because you're limited to making appointments with your particular doctor based on what office they are in on a given day, unless you want to chase your doctor around to the various locations.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
My insurance covers IVF but the billing showed the costs to be about $12,000. However, they do offer a great discount for those going through this due to a cancer diagnosis if insurance will not cover it.

Dr. Beltsos is a darling! She was thoughtful, attentive, personalized my care, remembered my and my partner's names, called or texted me with important results/updates, and always made me feel like she was fully present with me when we spoke... Whenever there was "big news" to discuss, she discussed it with me personally. I never felt like a number, even though she has a LOT of patients in her clinic. She really is an amazing provider - and so very knowledgeable and experienced.
I had an issue [with Vios Fertility] where the wrong medications were sent to my specialty pharmacy, so I ran out of one of my medications for a day during a cycle. The clinic was able to get me a dose so I only missed one while I was waiting for the shipment...The nursing staff are compassionate, knowledgeable, and attentive. They speak with patients at each appointment, can be reached by text or portal, and are always eager to answer questions and concerns.

Whenever there was "big news" to discuss, she discussed it with me personally. I never felt like a number, even though she has a LOT of patients in her clinic. She really is an amazing provider - and so very knowledgeable and experienced.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute)?
Honestly, my advise in regards to Dr. Beltsos personally is to go with an open heart, listening ears, and have faith... and you won't be disappointed. About Fertility treatments in general: Use your employee FSA for deductibles and co-payments, since you'll easily use it up with frequent monitoring appointments and procedure deductibles. The clinic has amazing staff that can explain insurance coverage and billing, as well as offer insight into assistance programs.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute)?
Dr. Beltsos is a darling! She was thoughtful, attentive, personalized my care, remembered my and my partner's names, called or texted me with important results/updates, and always made me feel like she was fully present with me when we spoke.
Describe the protocols Angeline Beltsos used in your cycles at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute) and their degree of success.
Egg retrievals: Labs and U/S are done at baseline, and every 2-3 days. Methylprednisolone and doxycycline, follistimAQ (FSH), Menopur (FSH/LH) for stimulation, ganirelix for preventing ovulation, Lupron trigger for PCOS (like myself), Pregnyl/ HcG for folks not at high risk for hyperstimulation. I was advised against fresh transfer because I overstimulated each cycle. 40 eggs were retrieved and 33 preserved on my first retrieval; however, my second cycle which was planned for embryo preservation yielded much fewer follicles and poorer egg quality (16 retrieved, 12 were mature, 10 fertilized, 2 resulted in blastocysts). I was advised to add myo-inositol and CoQ10 for egg quality on my last cycle of COH. On the third (and hopefully last) retrieval for embryo preservation, 25 eggs were retrieved, 20 were mature, 16 fertilized, and we are still awaiting the final count for blastocysts. Timed Intercourse: Clomid, then follistim and pregnyl trigger when I wasn't responsive to Clomid alone. U/S monitoring was used to confirm follicle maturation and ovulation.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
The nursing staff are compassionate, knowledgeable, and attentive. They speak with patients at each appointment, can be reached by text or portal, and are always eager to answer questions and concerns.
Describe your experience with Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
The clinic has multiple locations which are clean, welcoming, and the staff are top-notch. There is parking at some (but not all) of the locations. The staff - from the front desk to the admin staff to U/S techs and lab team are professional and friendly. I always felt like a person and never a number.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline Beltsos at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
I was fortunate that my insurance covered much of the costs once I met my out-of-pocket expense and deductible. Without insurance, I would never have been able to afford my care. Honestly, it was costly even WITH coverage.
Describe Angeline Beltsos's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
Unsure.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Kindbody - Chicago (formerly Vios Fertility Institute).
I had some conflicting instructions during my first cycle due to confusion over my doing retrieval for egg preservation and ability to retain my IUD. Genetic screening wasn't done earlier in process and became a concern in the middle of a retrieval for embryo preservation after I tested positive for CF. I had an issue where the wrong medications were sent to my specialty pharmacy, so I ran out of one of my medications for a day during a cycle. The clinic was able to get me a dose so I only missed one while I was waiting for the shipment.

She [Dr. Angeline Beltsos] never really seemed that concerned that I had so many failed cycles when in treatment with her, and the only change in treatment approach was slight tweaks to stimulating drug doses...The initial strategy was just to increase the amount of progesterone in my body as I came into treatment with a couple chemical pregnancies under my belt. It started with Clomid and timed intercourse, then adding oral progesterone after 2 cycles, then adding IUI after one cycle. Three IUI cycles with Clomid and progesterone support, then FSH injectables added into the mix for the 4th IUI cycle. All resulting in negative betas. IVF was next. The first cycle was Antagonist protocol which yielded a whopping 4 eggs. Two day 3 embryos transferred, leading to a negative test. The later 2 IVF cycles were Lupro
I felt fairly regularly like my treatment wasn't individualized. There were a number of occasions where I obviously confused with another patients (one phone consult started "I heard about your bad news (test results)" when I hadn't yet had my test done, it was scheduled for the following day). Nurses [at FCI] would assume I was taking drugs that I wasn't medically cleared to take. I had to self-advocate a lot.
How was your experience with Angeline Beltsos at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Dr. Beltsos is very sweet, almost to an in-genuine level. My consult appointments were generally pretty useless. They just involved her going over the results of my previous cycle, which I was well aware of, and then making a plan for the next cycle, which was usually changed, unbeknownst to me, and communicated via one of her nurses once the next cycle had started. She never really seemed that concerned that I had so many failed cycles when in treatment with her, and the only change in treatment approach was slight tweaks to stimulating drug doses. She also had a revolving door of nurses which was was concerning (how hard was she to work for?), not to mention, since the nurses were the medical professionals I regularly dealt with, it felt like I was constantly having to acclimate myself with those whom I was working with.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Angeline Beltsos at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
You will have to self-advocate. Keep your own records of everything and don't be afraid to ask questions if your treatment plan doesn't seem quite right.

Describe your experience with your nurse at Fertility Centers of Illinois. (Assigned nurse: Betsy)
Dr. Beltsos had many nurses while I was under her care. It started with Fran and Jen. They were awesome, but soon transferred to a different department in FCI. Then there was Emily and Jessica, Emily is perfectly nice and on top of things, but was never my main nurse, Jessica left suddenly and was replaced by Betsy. Betsy was awesome and always there if I needed a question answered. She transferred to a different doctor at FCI after my second IVF cycle. Since then I've not really had a nurse that seemed as though she was assigned to me.
Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
This is a big clinic with a lot of patients. It's a pretty well-oiled machine. I'm easily able to get in and out for monitoring in the morning and get to work on time. Being a big clinic though it can feel impersonal, but I've managed to build relationships with the staff, so it doesn't feel that way anymore.
Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Monitoring appointments are so easy. They have early hours and you're normally in and out in under an hour. You start in a main waiting room, are called back in groups to the ultrasound waiting room and, after ultrasound, you go to the lab waiting room, then get your blood drawn, and go on your merry way. If you need to speak to a nurse, the phlebotomist can normally flag one down for you too. No issues.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline Beltsos at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Thankfully I have very good insurance and state-mandated fertility coverage. Out of pockets costs were comparatively minimal (Freezing fees- $1200, biopsy fees- $2200, and prescription meds.)
What specific things went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
  • Lost appointments
  • Failed to order appropriate test
  • Failed to inform you of changes in protocol
  • Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
On occasion, lab orders have not been filed for tests that aren't the regular hormone panel (like when I had to have my prolactin rechecked, I had to tell the phlebotomist, who had to remind the nurse). I've been scheduled for ultrasound when all I needed was labwork, or vice versa. And people keep talking about putting me on lovenox when I shouldn't be on any blood thinners. They aren't a big deal when you're used to being your own advocate, but I can see some people not asking questions about their treatment and having a different outcome. The lack of communication about protocol changes was my biggest issue with Dr. Beltsos. I brought it up to her that I wasn't happy that she had changed my protocol after our consult and failed to communicate the changes, or the rational behind it, with me. She did not react professionally to my criticism.

Dr. Beltsos was a great doctor; however, I only interacted with her on my first and last appointment - so I interacted with her as a counselor, not a performing doctor....I told Dr. B I wanted candid, direct, non-emotional information/guidance - she adjusted her more sympathetic bedside manner to provide this to me....you will feel like a number in the sense you will primarily be interacting with nursing and admin staff, not your doctor. The nursing staff is excellent, so you will be in good hands, but it is helpful to have this expectation set from the beginning.
I was not given good enough guidance and instruction on what to do with the many at home tasks I had to complete (mixing medicine and injecting it). After I brought these problems to the clinic's [FCI] attention, they immediately provided me with support to correct them, took steps to adjust their larger program to incorporate the feedback I provided, and gave me a discount on my procedure. Due to the way in which they immediately and comprehensively course-corrected my experience, I recommend working with this clinic again.

Dr. Beltsos was a great doctor; however, I only interacted with her on my first and last appointment - so I interacted with her as a counselor, not a performing doctor. The paperwork instruction for mixing medicine was non-existent. Although I had sat down with a nurse who demonstrated this in the clinic, I was not recommended to record the demo on my phone, so when I was at home later that evening (after the nurse helpline had closed) and forgot a couple of steps to successfully mix the medicine, I did not have a resource to ask questions and ended up wasting very expensive medicine. The paperwork I received noted a website that supposedly had a demo video, but that website did not exist.

My situation seemed typically and not personal. Treatment seemed routine and not tailored to my situation. ...I wasn't really sure why I wasn't getting pregnant. Honestly I didn't realize there's more to know about the clinics. Again I assumed they [FCI] were experts and knew what they were doing. How was your experience with Angeline Beltsos at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
I wasn't really sure why I wasn't getting pregnant. It wasn't really explained it was more about adjusting the medication which I later understood after talking to a fertility nurse that it was way too much and not having any result of pregnancy. I should have stopped treatment with Dr. Beltsos, but I assumed she knew what she was doing but it wasn't until the last treatment that i realized I had exhausted my insurance benefit and everything would now have to be covered out of pocket. I probably should have changed after the 2 cycle.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Angeline Beltsos at Fertility Centers of Illinois?
Understand her success rate with pregnancies. Understand where you have insurance limitations to determine when you might need to change course of action. Understand how they manage their lab and success rates of the lab locations. I found out more information after I had to find another course of action which ultimately was adoption.

Most of the strategies were focused on increasing my medication to produce more eggs. That didn't really result in drastically different results. The first egg retrieval we got one egg, which was devastating. I compared myself to friends going through the same situations and hearing they were getting 30 eggs with one retrieval was also disheartening. I wish I would have asked more questions and understood the success rates, but I honestly wasn't educated enough. I assumed the dr. knew what she was doing so I trusted I would just get pregnant.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Professional and sympathetic. They knew me and when they took blood they knew my aversion to needles so often used butterfly needles to ease the pain. They also gave me tips on what would help with getting my veins to stand out like being hydrated so I'd have any easier time with blood being drawn. Ultrasounds were also less awkward. They were very clear on what they were looking for and why. They also shared when they would have to maneuver the equipment differently to get a better read.
Describe your experience with Fertility Centers of Illinois.
Honestly I didn't realize there's more to know about the clinics. Again I assumed they were experts and knew what they were doing. There wasn't anything that I experienced that gave me a different impression. However, what I should have known was to ask the success rates for the different labs. Another dr. said just switching labs could make a difference. I wish I would have known that before exhausting my benefits.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Angeline Beltsos at Fertility Centers of Illinois.
I don't remember completely but I think it was around $45K/cycle for the drugs, retrieval and transfer. I had to pay minimal OOP expenses.

Very clear and direct in communication. The importance of that cannot be underestimated... All my hormone levels and blood work were good for someone my age, 43. My husband's sperm analysis was not good. She chose IUI because they could select only the good sperm and bypass the cervix increasing the likelihood of pregnancy.
They are super busy so you have to follow up on everything and be an advocate for yourself. Faxing stuff to them never works... Dr. Beltsos' assistant, Melanie, schedule an ultrasound for me. When my husband and I arrived at the clinic, the ultrasound tech came out somewhat sheepishly and asked what day I was in my cycle. I said I wasn't menstruating at the time, and she said I needed to be on day 2 of my cycle for this specific ultrasound. We were understandably a bit perturbed, and instead of just apologizing for their mistake, the nurses and staff kept saying, "there must have been a miscommunication." My husband and I said, "no, we rely on you to tell us when these things need to be scheduled, we are new to the process, so no miscommunication, clearly an error on Melanie's end."

I don't need a lot of hand-holding- I just needed someone to get me pregnant and that is what Dr. Beltsos [at FCI] did after IVF cycle #1. I felt like she did listen to me when we met and answered all of my questions...[Nurse} Stephanie was amazing. I just wish that she worked full time!...Thankfully they scheduled monitoring appointments for early in the morning so that you could get your ultrasound and bloodwork done before heading into work. A couple of times it was difficult to get an early appointment though.

One month Lupron shot in preparation for IVF #1. Daily Lupron shots, Gonal-f, Menopur, Crinone. Cycle produced 10 eggs, 6 mature, 3 fertilized with ICSI, 1 transferred, 1 frozen. Cycle was a success and daughter was born in 2013. Frozen cycle #1- daily Lupron shots, Minivelle patches, Estradiol, Crinone. 1 frozen embryo transferred, resulted in miscarriage at 7 weeks. IVF cycle #2- Gonal-f, Menopur, dexamethasone. Slow to respond and I only have two mature follicles; cycle is transferred to a IUI. BFN. Prior to IVF cycle #3- Schoyer protocol with Ganerelix and Minivelle patches to hopefully stimulate ovaries to make more eggs next cycle. Amazingly got pregnant naturally during this protocol so no need for IVF.

[Dr. Beltsos is] positive from the start but she’s also honest. She’ll discuss pros and cons of options. She explains things well and supports your decision. She also understands it only takes one good egg and then embryo. If you are a low responder, you can go to retrieval with fewer eggs...She tailored your treatment plan to you...I did medium doses of meds, very high and then a slow and low dose protocol
Generally a short wait to be seen [at Vios Fertility Institute]. Only a couple times around the holidays that I had to wait to be seen. Well organized, clean. The locations in the city are easy to get to...Love the nurses! They are compassionate, helpful and there if you need them. They made sure they answered all questions...Vios offered a discounted self pay rate that included monitoring and the procedure

[Dr. Beltsos] is very compassionate and her #1 goal is to get you pregnant. She will try anything and will also listen to your concerns and adjust accordingly. She will make you understand everything that is going to happen and why...Since I am 42, she recommended that my stims start high on the first 3 days then taper down. The rationale is to jump start my follicles...is very conservative in this aspect but we agreed to transfer 2.
The nursing staff [at Vios Fertility Institute-Chicago] is pretty good. I've had one to tell me stop my supplements during stims and one tell me to stay on them...Strengths are definitely the physicians and nurses. The weakness is the billing. It's very bad. They never answer the phone or call you back. However, when a $20 bill is due, they will hound you. I had to threaten to Cc: Beltsos in an email for someone to call me back.
