When I first became Dr. Hecht's patient, I had been trying to conceive for 2 years, including which I have taken 6 cycles of Clomid with no success. Before I saw Dr. Hecht: I had been trying to conceive for 2 years. I had taken 6 cycles of Clomid with no success. My partner and I had done all tests and imaging, and everything was normal.
When I saw Dr. Hecht, he mentioned that after 2 years of trying to conceive, it is very unlikely that I will get pregnant without any further treatment. Since I had already taken Clomid, he suggested I do IUI treatment taking Letrozole (2.5 MG, 1 tablet daily for 5 days starting 3rd day of period). I would do an ultrasound after my period to monitor my ovulation, and then accordingly decide when I will do the IUI. Before the day of IUI, I would take a trigger shot. I did for cycles of IUI treatment that were unsuccessful. The next plan is to do IVF treatment.

I had two incidents: Once after deciding on the date that I would do the IUI, it happened that all doctors who can perform the procedure were not working that day. It was a very rare incident. However, Dr. Hecht followed the matter closely and insured that someone became available. The second incident was that after I took the letrozole and did the US, it happened that my ovulation day/the day to do the IUI coincided with a public holiday. So, I got a call from the clinic that no one will be working that day. I was frustrated, since I had already taken the medication and didn't want to postpone. The team was very understanding and I did the IUI the day after the holiday instead.
I have been seeing Dr. Hechts for the past 10 months for fertility treatment, and I can honestly say that he is one of the most kind, compassionate and caring doctors I have ever met...listen to my concerns and answer all of my questions, never once making me feel rushed or dismissed...consistently shown a level of kindness and understanding that is truly rare in the medical field. How was your experience with Bryan Hecht at MetroHealth?
My spouse and I saw Dr. Hecht as a patient after a year and a half of infertility. He was not thorough in his medical history collection and was dismissive of concerns that I had. During my initial workup I had an ultrasound, pelvic exam and HSG. He did not introduce the resident with him in the room for the ultrasound, did not warn me before inserting the probe, and did not explain what he saw or what the results might mean even when I questioned him. During my HSG, he similarly did not tell me what he was doing, and when I vocalized pain he didn’t apologize, empathize, ask if I was alright, or attempt to be calming in any sense. He had to do the procedure twice as the dye was leaking from my uterus, and when inserting in the ballon catheter, I had excruciating pain (and couldn’t help but mutter a curse word) he mockingly asked if I was dying and if I needed him to perform CPR on me. While instruments that he was holding were physically inside of me he made multiple sexual comments and jokes. To me, this was completely inappropriate, and untactful as I was visibly in pain and in a vulnerable position. At the follow up appointment I confronted him about my experience and he stated that “90% of my patients love my humor and I’m sorry that you don’t like it”.
After the studies performed were “normal” he recommended we start with a medicated IUI cycle prior to proceeding to IVF. This was despite my family history and longstanding symptoms consistent with endometriosis. When I questioned him on if he thought I might have endometriosis and whether a laparoscopy would be recommended prior to attempting treatment he stated that he’s sure a surgeon would be happy to “cut me open” but that he didn’t think it was necessary and that my symptoms were normal. I independently requested a referral to a Minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon from my OB who performed a laparoscopy and found multiple endometrial lesions. I have not been back to Dr. Hecht as I do not trust his clinical judgement and felt violated by his joking, poor bedside manner and apparent lack of empathy during my HSG.
Dr. Hechts strengths are that he sees the patient at all visits and “attempts to make the meetings lighthearted”.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Bryan Hecht at MetroHealth?
Avoid seeing him at all costs. If you do have to see him, stand up for yourself and do your research on what up to date treatment may be for your situation. You will need to advocate for yourself heavily.

After the AMH labs came back, Dr. Hecht became much more proactive and I was placed on 100 mg of Clomid for cycle days 3-7. I showed very little response and was started on Gonal-F for 4 days at 100 iu’s and produced 1 good follicle. I had an Ovidrel trigger shot followed by IUI.
Appointments [at Metro Health] are quick and they do like to move folks in and out quickly. Appointments are very private and you don’t really run into other patients. Dr. Hecht is good about responding to messages sent through MyChart and Melinda is always available by phone to answer any questions. Dr. Hecht took time to get to know myself and my husband. When we lost our first pregnancy, he reached out to share his condolences even though we had graduated from his care.

This cycle I did 100 mg of Clomid on cycle days 6-10 with no response and began Follistim 150 iu’s on cycle days 16-19 with no response. My dose was increased to 225 iu’s for cycle days 20-22. I find out tomorrow how we will proceed.

My insurance doesn’t cover my treatment. Each cycle has cost about $1,500-3,000 depending on the number of visits, bloodwork, and medication protocol.
Dr. Hecht made such an effort to get to know my husband and I...He provided us with ideas and options to try and conceive in the simplest and least expensive way possible. Once we exhausted all of those options, unfortunately we did need to move onto IVF, but trust me, he worked with us to try EVERYTHING we could to avoid this... If something was urgent, he would call me on his personal cell phone to let me know what was going on.
My husband and I had a very unique/challenging male infertility situation, and the Jones Institute bent over backwards for us to do whatever they could to help achieve our goal of starting a family. We had such personal treatment at their office from EVERYONE… literally from the receptionist, to the nurses, to the financial coordinator to the embryologist. The entire staff was always so hopeful and positive, even during the most difficult times.
How was your experience with Bryan Hecht at Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny?
My husband and I will be forever grateful Dr. Hecht. I was a patient at the Jones Institute prior to his arrival and we had little to no progress in our treatment until he arrived. He provided us with ideas and options to try and conceive in the simplest and least expensive way possible. Once we exhausted all of those options, unfortunately we did need to move onto IVF, but trust me, he worked with us to try EVERYTHING we could to avoid this. We had quite a long journey with Dr.Hecht, and I am so happy to say that after about a year of medicated cycles, we finally had our success. He was with us every step of the way…. he was our physician first, but also showed us so much empathy and compassion during the difficult times. My husband and I appreciated his ‘hugs, high fives and humor’. Additionally, he was always open to the suggestions we brought to the table to enhance and personalize our treatment. And I will just say, his clinical skills when doing a pelvic exam or an IUI are excellent. I have had other OBGYNs who were HORRIBLE in this area, but there were times when I didn’t even feel him insert the speculum. This is truly a skill! Overall, we loved Dr. Hecht and are so sad that he moved back to Ohio.
In full transparency though, I have had friends that have seen Dr.Hecht and were turned off by his sense of humor and candidness. While I can understand their feelings, for my husband and I, this is exactly what we needed. We have always been an open book about our situation and truly valued having a doctor who could be just as open with us. Infertility is a personal struggle. Find a doctor that fits your personality and lifestyle. We saw 3 different REs before Dr.Hecht and we knew with certainty that he was the best fit for us. Who knows, maybe for baby #2, we’ll make the two hour journey down the turnpike so we can work with him again :)
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Bryan Hecht at Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny?
Don't be turned off by his sense of humor. He truly has your best interest at heart and wants you to succeed.
Also, don't be afraid to be your own advocate. He is open to your suggestions. For my second egg retrieval, he wanted to keep my stim protocol the same as for the first, but I wanted to be more aggressive to possibly retrieve more eggs. We worked together to come up with a treatment plan which increased my meds slightly, but still protected me from developing OHSS, and for the second retrieval, we got TWICE as many eggs as the first! I really nice that we had an open patient/doctor relationship, and I felt comfortable approaching him with my ideas.

May 2015 - IVF #1 - Follistim 200, Menopur 50, Ganirelix and Ovidril trigger. I stimmed for 12 days, had 9 eggs retrieved, 5 were fertilized and we transferred 2 day-3 embryos. No embryos made it to freeze. This cycle ended in a chemical pregnancy.
July - November 2015 - 5 IUI's - each month, did 5 days of Letrozol, tracked ovulation with OPKs, and triggered with Ovidril. All 5 IUIs ended in negative pregnancy tests.
December 2015 - IVF #2 - Follistim 200, Menopur 75, Ganirelix and Ovidril trigger. I stimmed for 9 days, had 19 eggs retrieved, 10 were fertilized and we transferred 2 day-3 embryos. 5 day-3 embryos made it to freeze. This cycle ended in a negative pregnancy test.
March 2016 - FET #1 - vaginal estrace and prometrium for uterine priming, plus baby aspirin. Thawed and transferred 2 day-3 embryos. This cycle ended in a negative pregnancy test.
May 2016 - FET #2 - vaginal estrace and prometrium for uterine priming, plus baby aspirin. Thawed 3 day-3 embryos, and allowed them to develop to day-5.
One embryo did not survive the thaw, one embryo developed to 8-cell stage, and one embryo became a blastocyst. Transferred the 8-cell and the blast. This cycle ended in a POSITIVE pregnancy test.

The nursing staff is wonderful. They also make great efforts to know you personally and show great care and compassion. I have shed many tears with them during the tough times, and when we finally had success, I could just tell they were as excited as my husband and I were!
My only critical comments... 95% of the time, if you call and leave a message, they do return your phone call the same day, but there were a few times they did not call me back, which for a fertility patient, was very stressful to have to wait until the following day to try and call again. Additionally, I personally did not like it when the nurses performed the IUIs. There was one nurse that did them well, but when one of the other nurses performed one on me, it really hurt! After that, I always requested that the doctor performed my IUIs (which he did without hesitation).
Otherwise, they were always helpful when explaining the process, medications and answering all of my crazy questions!

We had such personal treatment at their office from EVERYONE… literally from the receptionist, to the nurses, to the financial coordinator to the embryologist. The entire staff was always so hopeful and positive, even during the most difficult times. And when we FINALLY had success, I cannot tell you how excited they were for us! We received three personal phone calls from different staff members congratulating us the day our pregnancy test came back positive! Although our journey was much longer than we originally anticipated, I am so happy that we went through it at the Jones Institute. I cannot stress the level of personalized care we received there and how invested the staff is in their patients. I still think about them all the time and will be forever grateful for the gift they have given us!
Something unique about the clinic is the office is located in McCandless, but egg retrievals and embryo transfers are done at the surgery center in Allegheny General Hospital on the Northside (IUIs are performed in the McCandless office). Also the frozen embryos are stored at the hospital.
They do bloodwork and will perform IUIs on Saturdays, but the office is closed on Sundays. They will do egg retrievals and transfers any day of the week, including holidays. My first retrieval was on Memorial Day and had an IUI done on Labor Day.
They do batch scheduling for IVF. So they perform all IVF patient's retrievals and transfers during the same week in each month. I had to take birth control pills to delay my cycle to get onto their schedule.

The monitoring appointments were always in the morning, which was great for me. I always liked to try and get the first appointment at 6:45 or 7:00am so I could go straight to work afterwards. The ultrasound technicians do not work in the afternoon, so there are no afternoon appointments.

The only 'bad' experience we had at the clinic was during my 3rd IUI. My husband's semen samples needed to be processed in a very specific way in order to maximize the amount of motile sperm. The lead embryologist always processed my husband's samples, and I fully trusted him. On the day of our 3rd IUI though, he was called down to the hospital so a lab technician needed to process my husbands semen, and unfortunately, she did it incorrectly, so the total motile sperm were very low. We still went forward with the procedure, but that cycle was basically a waste.
I had gone in with a notebook of questions - I think there were two full pages - and he [Dr Bryan Hecht] spent the time with us to go over every one and made sure that I was comfortable with his answer and understood what his answer meant. After I had a miscarriage, I called the office and Dr. Hecht called me back personally...He has the best nurses. They all love their jobs and you can tell that it's a great place to work.
The strengths [of Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny] - super friendly staff and they do whatever they can to squeeze you in when you need to be there since timing is everything! They also do not overbook. Dr. Hecht has an odd sense of humor. At my first appointment, he could tell that I was nervous and uneasy. He cracked a few jokes and I immediately began to calm down and relax. I had gone in with a notebook of questions - I think there were two full pages - and he spent the time with us to go over every one and made sure that I was comfortable with his answer and understood what his answer meant. After I had a miscarriage, I called the office and Dr. Hecht called me back personally. He made me and my husband feel like we were the only patients he had during that horrific time in our lives. He assured us that he was there to help us again and when we were ready, we could make an appointment and go back in to begin treatments. Upon our return, he sat down with us for over an hour and talked to us about the miscarriage and how we were feeling to make sure that we were emotionally ready to begin this process over again. It was great to have a doctor that was so invested in helping us begin a family.

My husband went with me a few times and the times he did not accompany me, Dr. Hecht asked about him. I felt very comfortable with Dr. Hecht. He makes a very difficult situation bearable.

My very first treatment in October was to initiate a period, take Letrozol for days 3-7, go back for several ultrasounds to track the uterus lining and ovulation. Once he deemed that I was ovulating, I had specific instructions on intercourse. When my next period was due, I was instructed to either take a pregnancy test if no signs of a period or call them when my period started. I was fortunate to become pregnant on the first treatment. But as I mentioned earlier, I had a miscarriage at 7 weeks. We started treatments again in January. Since the Letrozol worked for me before, he saw no reason to change the treatment. We continued that treatment for 4 more months and on April 30th, I took another pregnancy test and it was positive. I'm currently 7 weeks along in this pregnancy and I have another appointment to see him in two weeks before he releases me to my OBGYN. He wants to stay with us through the rough spot - getting over that hump we were at last time catastrophe struck.

He has the best nurses. They all love their jobs and you can tell that it's a great place to work. There are a few nurses that drive several hours to work - that is a surefire sign to me that they love their jobs! Judy and Sharon were the two that I dealt with the most. No matter what small and "stupid" question I had, they never judged me and called me back immediately with answers. They could tell that I was paranoid about everything I did, everything I took, and they were extremely helpful. I had some dental issues when I first got pregnant and I called about everything. Am I allowed to have Novocaine? Am I allowed to get my teeth cleaned? Should I tell them that I'm pregnant or refuse x-rays? They were the best! And the ultrasound techs were fantastic too. They were very friendly and did everything they could to make you feel comfortable while you were incredibly vulnerable. Laying there on the table, naked from the waist down, with the ultrasound wand inside of you, you were able to have a regular conversation like two friends sitting across from one another at lunch. It was a great experience and I'm glad that I had/have such a wonderful team to work with.

We initiated 4 IVF cycles with Dr. Hecht. I have DOR and I'm a poor responder. My first cycle was an antagonist cycle with high dose FSH. My second and third cycles were long Lupron cycles worh high dose FSH (to quell spontaneous ovulation) and my fourth cycle was long Lupron with high dose FSH, plus a clomid flare.
Dr. Hecht is extremely processional, but he does use humor at times to lighten the mood. This might entirely not be for everyone, but for mine and my husbands personalities and treatment it was fantastic. He is extremely knowledgeable and you feel like a person not just a number...Dr. Hecht explained everything we needed and took the time to make us feel comfortable with diagnostic procedures and treatment. I was fortunate enough to get pregnant on my first cycle under the care of Dr. Hecht and his colleagues. Before that, my OB prescribed letrozole 2.5 mg which I was on for 3 months without success. During my care under Dr. Hecht, I was on the letrozole with ultrasound monitoring, and then had an injection of 250 mcg Ovidrel. We conceived with one round of timed intercourse.

We initially completed extension paperwork about backgrounds.
I completed a large amount of bloodwork (TSH, testosterone, prolactin, progesterone, LH, FSH, estradiol, dehydroepiandro sterone sulfate, AMH, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, SMA carrier, CF carrier, hemoglobin electrophoresis, varicella zoster IGG antibody, rubella) and ultrasounds. My husband provided a sperm sample. Our testing indicated lack of/inconsistent ovulation.
Based on this, Dr. Hecht recommended Letrozole (based on research about successes).
I completed one round on Letrozole, and was monitored via ultrasound. I did get pregnant, but this unfortunately ended in a blighted ovum. I chose to complete a D+C. After less than 3 months, I had positive pregnancy test, and I am currently pregnant.
After positive pregnancy tests, my HCG was taken and I completed early ultrasounds.

The clinic was clean and easy to navigate. There were multiple different areas, including waiting area, private bathroom, assessment rooms, and ultrasound rooms. We were also able to schedule in the direct clinic, which was helpful. The rooms were slightly small, but we were able to have 4 people in the ultrasound room.

One time my ultrasound appointment was accidentally not placed in the system. However, upon me calling, this was immediately remedied.
He [Dr. Bryan Hecht] was always understanding, always punctual, efficient, and kept his humor present which I liked. I am very thankful I got this opportunity again to be a mom once more...Being diabetic, he originally denied fertility treatments until I got my sugars under control. At first that really made me mad, but it was me being selfish and I felt it was him caring about no only my health, but my baby's health.
[MetroHealth] Strengths : Communication, scheduling, punctuality and timing. We were always in contact, I always got into my scheduled appointments on time. The communication is key!! Again, as a reminder, fertility process is very slow, and takes much much patience. It could get frustrating when things do not happen immediately and people immediately get discouraged as I did at first. But trust the process and your doctor and team!
How was your experience with Bryan Hecht at MetroHealth?
As previously stated, he originally denied treatments until I got my sugars under control, and once I did we start the process over again. In fact it was him who scanned me and found the reason I may have been having trouble conceiving was because I had left over placenta from my last birth. We did a stat D&C procedure and once again were able to start fertility treatments. I was told from the beginning the few two times may not work, but I still felt discouraged. Dr. Hecht reassured me this is quite normal and by the third try of femara and IUI, I became pregnant! He was always understanding, always punctual, efficient, and kept his humor present which I liked. I am very thankful I got this opportunity again to be a mom once more.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Bryan Hecht at MetroHealth?
Stay hopeful! It is a very long process and does take a lot of patience.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Bryan Hecht at MetroHealth?
When I originally saw Dr. Hecht, it was during very trying times and covid, but he still went ahead and performed all tests. Being diabetic, he originally denied fertility treatments until I got my sugars under control. At first that really made me mad, but it was me being selfish and I felt it was him caring about no only my health, but my baby's health.
Describe the protocols Bryan Hecht used in your cycles at MetroHealth and their degree of success.
For the first two months we tried Clomid. Made me absolutely crazy and on the third try we started femara. Every month we also did trigger shots.
Describe your experience with your nurse at MetroHealth. (Assigned nurse: Melinda)
Melinda was the primary nurse that I dealt with and she was always informative, warm, inviting and got back to me in timely manner. Being a fertility clinic, a lot of the appointments are short notice, so I applaud them for always getting me in exactly when I needed to be there.
