Success w/ Doc Too early to know
Dr. Shenoy is excellent. She helped us navigate through a process that was both physically and mentally very challenging. She understood, acknowledged, and adjusted care based on the mental impacts of the process which was much appreciated. She encouraged us to push forward several times when weren't sure and she was right in doing so
The [Mayo Clinic] team works very well together. They support one another and work together seamlessly. They all knew what was going on with my case and were able to make recommendations on next steps right away without back and forth, even in more urgent situations...I absolutely love the nurse that was there at my retrieval. She was such a positive force and blessing to have present.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Shenoy is excellent. She helped us navigate through a process that was both physically and mentally very challenging. She understood, acknowledged, and adjusted care based on the mental impacts of the process which was much appreciated. She encouraged us to push forward several times when weren't sure and she was right in doing so. She didn't always just provide the answers we wanted to hear which is a sign of a great doctor. We met with several other providers prior and they were all willing to do whatever we wanted. Dr. Shenoy and team listened to our goals and gently pushed us in the direction that they know would allow us to best achieve them rather than just allowing us to make a decision based on our initial comfort levels which would not have led to the best outcomes.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Shenoy is a bit more on the quiet side. If you have questions, ask them. She will have or find the answers for you. Share how you are feeling with her and she will help you to make the best decisions for you.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
All experiences with Dr. Shenoy and team were very customized and thoughtful. The whole team showed great empathy, went to great lengths to answer all questions, and were extremely focused on our comfort as we were extremely nervous throughout the entire process. The initial process of identifying outside monitoring and the standard process during the start of the cycle were more hands off so felt a bit more like a number - but when any needs arose during this time the team was 1,000% ready to help.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
Started with standard birth control. I think my body may have overreacted to the medication based on my side effects and it seemed like I started the cycle overly suppressed (but that's my thought/ opinion). Was on mid-range doses for standard IVF. My Gonal-F stayed the same but Menopur was doubled around mid-cycle. I responded slowly at first and the cycle was longer than I expected - because I'm usually always very sensitive to medications. In the end my e2 levels looked good (around 3,600 at trigger) but only had 5 measurable follicles. Lupron trigger which may not have worked based on the bloodwork the next day so I freaked out that we'd have to cancel at the last minute. The team reassured me that it was OK and we did a second HCG trigger ASAP the day prior. Day of retrieval 22 eggs were retrieved which was a big surprise. 20 were mature, 17 fertilized, 16 made it to day 3, 12 were graded A or B on day 5 and were frozen. 4 PGT-A normal.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
Because I had to undergo outside monitoring and I didn't have a designated nursing contact the start of the process was a bit hectic. The team was very responsive in general, but a few times in situations where turnaround were urgent I became really nervous about getting responses in time. That said, the team was incredibly caring, compassionate, and well organized. I absolutely love the nurse that was there at my retrieval. She was such a positive force and blessing to have present.

Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
Medications: $5,660.53 Total Cost without insurance including necessary travel: $47,896.19 Total Out of Pocket including necessary travel: $17,681.90
Describe Chandra Shenoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Single embryo transfer is generally recommended and required for surrogacy with PGT-A normal embryos
What specific things went wrong at Mayo Clinic?
  • Failed to consider drug intolerance
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Mayo Clinic.
I wouldn't define the situation as things going wrong at the clinic, but there was some room for improvement in my medication plan. I am very sensitive to medications and an existing medicine that I take had an interaction with the birth control needed at the start. It caused significant symptoms which required my physician outside of the fertility clinic to need to adjust my medication. Once the situation was realized and understood, a fix was put into place quickly but the process to get to the point of understanding was a bit nerve wracking. It was a unique situation though - not an everyday situation.

She [Dr. Shenoy] tended to provide as little information as was necessary, while I repeatedly said that I need to understand the entire process and know the details. I often had to ask questions to seek clarification, gain new information, and better understand the reasons behind treatment decisions. I had a difficult experience with a saline sonogram where she and team attempted to check for uterine polyps. They had difficulty completing the procedure and viewing the uterus, and I left feeling unconfident and uncomfortable. Dr. Shenoy is a capable doctor and did respond to all of my questions in person or through the online portal. She completed all medical tasks needed; however, she did not go above and beyond to make me feel cared about.
Very one size fits all treatment [at Mayo Clinic]. Rotation between different doctors. Some doctors had amazing bedside manner. All of the doctors are very knowledgeable. Everything is done online via the portal. Pregnancy results are sent via the portal and no personal phone call is made until the next day...I was repeatedly told what they do for the IVF process in a very one size fits all manner...As I am diagnosed with unexplained infertility, I often had questions aimed at digging deeper into why my body was performing a certain way. These questions/concerns were not looked into further besides telling me what their protocol typically is.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Dr. Shenoy is very knowledgeable and could readily explain best practice. She attempted warmth with smiles. Besides smiling, she demonstrated a reserved, slightly cold personality. She tended to provide as little information as was necessary, while I repeatedly said that I need to understand the entire process and know the details. I often had to ask questions to seek clarification, gain new information, and better understand the reasons behind treatment decisions. What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Make sure you ask lots of questions and advocate for yourself. She is very knowledgeable and capable, but your personality might not mesh with hers.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
There was very little personalization in care. At Mayo Clinic, the doctors rotate care so you may get a different doctor depending on the day. I was repeatedly told what they do for the IVF process in a very one size fits all manner. Under her care, nurses sent impersonal online portal messages. As I am diagnosed with unexplained infertility, I often had questions aimed at digging deeper into why my body was performing a certain way. These questions/concerns were not looked into further besides telling me what their protocol typically is.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
I was given the standard Mayo Clinic REI department protocol. Due to my age below 35, I was told they only transfer 1 embryo at a time as a precaution to prevent the risk of twins. I began with birth control pills which I had been on for months due to issues with cysts. I was on Gonal F (225) Menopur (150) for 10 stim days. I had 2 monitoring ultrasounds because after the first one, my follicles took an extra day or two to mature, so a follow up was needed. No other blood work was done throughout the cycle. I took Cetrotide one day, and after was the trigger (hcg 10,000). Bloodwork was completed on day 4, 6, and 8. After the first and second blood tests my doses were increased due to slower response. My retrieval was two days after the trigger in the morning. 18 eggs, 13 mature, 6 fertilized, and 1 was blastocyst embryo by the time of transfer. I had a fresh embryo transfer five days later. 2 additional embryos became blastocyst and were frozen that day/evening. My transfer failed. A second embryo from that retrieval was transferred 3 months later using the FET protocol. The transfer was done with a different doctor at Mayo, but that embryo also did not implant and it failed.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
Nurses are limited to the level of communication they provide due to the online portal limitations. Some nurses were far better communicators than others. I noticed several errors in the online communications that were due to clerical typing issues. Additionally, I had one difficult experience that was due to a mix up behind the scenes. When I needed a follow up ultrasound due to fluid on my uterine lining during an FET and was told to call and schedule the ultrasound, I called the front desk to set it up, but they said no orders for an ultrasound had been placed. So, the appointment desk left a message with the nursing team regarding this matter. In response a few hours later, I received a short message from nurse staff stating that if I’d like to schedule an ultrasound, please contact appointment desk (which I had already done). Once that was sorted out, I was able to schedule an appointment. I attend that appointment in a later week, and the ultrasound tech began the process for a follicle assessment. I had to tell the employee that I was not being seen for a follicle count as I was in the middle of an FET cycle. I had to explain to her that this appointment was supposed to be a follow up to check for fluid on my lining. The tech apologized and said that the order was made for a follicle assessment. Since I caught the mistake, the correct pictures were taken, but I left that appointment feeling very upset that someone behind the scenes put in the wrong order.

Describe your experience with your monitoring appointments at Mayo Clinic.
Ultrasound monitoring was run like a well oiled machine, but you had to call and schedule your own appointment within the time frame allowed.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
Retrieval with fresh transfer was $15,000. Frozen Embryo Transfer was approximately $5,500.
Describe Chandra Shenoy's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Mayo Clinic.
Doctors at Mayo strongly recommend one embryo at a time.

She [Dr. Shenoy] seems to be a nice doctor but seems to be distanced. She didn't do my egg retrieval. They said they work in team and whoever on call will do my egg retrieval or embryo transfer. So while Dr. Shenoy is assigned as my primary care doctor, other doctors did different procedures (e.g., mock embryo transfer, egg retrieval, ultrasound 36 hours before egg retrieval)...
They [nurses at Mayo Clinic] are prompt with communicating with me via Mayo patient portals...Mayo may be a great health care system known internationally but not sure about their Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility area. How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
This is my first time working with Dr. Shenoy, started my IVF with Mayo's REI in January 2022. She seems to be a nice doctor but seems to be distanced. She didn't do my egg retrieval. They said they work in team and whoever on call will do my egg retrieval or embryo transfer. So while Dr. Shenoy is assigned as my primary care doctor, other doctors did different procedures (e.g., mock embryo transfer, egg retrieval, ultrasound 36 hours before egg retrieval). I met/talked with Dr. Shenoy a few times; my first appointment inquiring about IVF, my IVF orientation, and when she called me to inform me about that 3 out of 4 eggs are abnormal. She sounded more compassionate at that time. I feel as if I don't get a lot education from them. It feels like IVF support groups on FB provide me more information, support than Dr. Shenoy and Mayo REI folks...
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
I am not sure... I am still deciding about the care that I am receiving including the competence of the clinic. They don't even have any success rates when I asked...

Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
They had me injected Gonal F 300IU, Menopur 150 unit for 10 days, adding Ganirelix 250 mcg on the 5th day, and stopped all and had me injected HCG a day before my egg retrieval. My Estradiol was 895 on two days before the egg retrieval. They couldn't visualize my right ovary so they only retrieved 4 eggs from my left ovary. The first/last time they saw both ovaries was August 2021 at that time they counted 33 follicles. But since then all the ultrasound technicians including the resident at Mayo Rochester who did my last ultrasound on 2 days before my egg retrieval said they can't see my right ovaries. They attributed that to bowel gas or that the right ovary is shrinking. Not a lot explanation or not enough effort (to me) to visualize my right ovary. Or anything else that I can do to improve the outcomes.

Dr. Shenoy was very accepting and knowledgeable. We only met her twice and met more with the NPs and Fellows who worked with her, but our pregnancy journey was fairly short because my wife got pregnant on the second IUI. She explained different ways we could go about getting pregnant but didn't need to do anything other than IUI...It's always a little scary to be an LGBT couple not knowing what to expect but she was easy to work with.
The [Mayo Clinic] staff was great to work with. Just know that you may not see the same people every time. The nurses were the ones who performed the implantation, unless they couldn't then the fellow came in to assist...The reason we chose Dr. Shenoy was because she went on Instagram and talked about reproductive choices specifically for LGBTQ patients. It made us feel comfortable right away...our pregnancy journey was fairly short because my wife got pregnant on the second IUI

What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
Expect to do a lot of testing before even trying to get pregnant. We had a lot of testing including genetic testing, lab work, and seeing a psychologist. From the first meeting with her to the first treatment of IUI it was about 3 months.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
She took our concerns into place and was honest with us. It's always a little scary to be an LGBT couple not knowing what to expect but she was easy to work with.
Describe the protocols Chandra Shenoy used in your cycles at Mayo Clinic and their degree of success.
My wife's testing looked good, so Dr. Shenoy recommended starting IUI. She recommended 3 cycles of IUI before utilizing any medications. If my wife was able to get pregnant after IUI and medicated IUI Dr. Shenoy stated we could talk about a new plan. Dr. Shenoy wanted my wife to track her period and then 10 days later, she would take ovulation tests. Once we got a smiley face on the ovulation tests, we would call the clinic and have an appointment the next day. We'd go to the appointment for the next day and have the IUI. My wife was able to get pregnant after 2 cycles.
How competent was Chandra Shenoy at LGBTQ+ care?
The reason we chose Dr. Shenoy was because she went on Instagram and talked about reproductive choices specifically for LGBTQ patients. It made us feel comfortable right away
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
The nurses were great and very knowledgeable.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
The testing was a lot and I know some people don't want to be tested for everything, but it was very comforting to know that my wife's numbers were within a good range. The clinic also wanted genetic testing which we did and found my wife had a genetic disorder that could be passed on. While this was scary, the genetic counselor and Fellow were very helpful in alleviating some fears and concerns. After all the testing, the process for IUI was very easy. The staff was great to work with. Just know that you may not see the same people every time. The nurses were the ones who performed the implantation, unless they couldn't then the fellow came in to assist.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
We knew we wanted to get pregnant right after we got married so we changed our insurance to have the lowest out-of-pocket costs. I think the most we paid out of pocket was 2400 dollars. Unfortunately, I don't think that provides a very good idea of the costs

Make sure you ask questions, otherwise she [Dr. Shenoy] doesnt really say much...I went from using lupron, and trigger injections for 6 cycles, straight to IVF...we had to convert to a freeze all cycle due to hyperstimulation...She didnt really argue against my request to transfer two embryos after the first 2 single transfers had failed...in the beginning of starting everything that she seemed very robotic, like she had the same speech for everybody. But then towards the end of my time that I spent at that clinic It seemed that the more negative results I got, the more sympathetic and personable she became.
sometimes the doctors [at Mayo Clinic] would put in the notes what and when my next lab, appointment, ultrasound, etc. would be, but it would never get scheduled so i would have to call and remind them to schedule it. Other times they would order a medication and i would go pick it up, and it was never actually sent to pharmacy, so i would have to wait for them to call the doctors and wait for it to be ready...It seems like they do the same treatment for every single person and are not open to alternate options and protocols. every idea i had read about other fertility clinics doing in the surrounding area was shot down because they said that there isn't any true evidence that "said idea" actually works.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?
She was good with explaining and answering any questions that i had. But every time something failed, it was always the same answer. "we dont really know what happens, or why they dont implant". And maybe that is truly the case, but I wish she would have tried harder to come up with a different plan every time and try something new.

I went from using lupron, and trigger injections for 6 cycles, straight to IVF. I used menopur, ganirelix, gonal-f, lupron...probably other but i dont remember them all. we had to convert to a freeze all cycle due to hyperstimulation. I kept bleeding right after starting progesterone in oil and we would have to cancel the cycle. They then decided to have me do the estrace vaginally instead of orally, and that stopped the bleeding prior to the transfer.
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Mayo Clinic.
The nursing staff were all wonderful. They were very supportive and compassionate. It felt nice leaving and feeling like they truly genuinely wanted everything to work out for you.
Describe your experience with Mayo Clinic.
The clinic works as a team approach to everything. so although i had Dr. Shenoy for a majority of my procedures, i had a mix of all of them at some point. This is good and bad in my opinion. it was great because they can all get together and put their brains together to try to help you get pregnant, but i also feel like none of them are truly invested in me. My biggest complaint is that i feel like a doll on a factory assembly line. It seems like they do the same treatment for every single person and are not open to alternate options and protocols. every idea i had read about other fertility clinics doing in the surrounding area was shot down because they said that there isn't any true evidence that "said idea" actually works.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic.
the cost for my stimulation and egg retrieval was $12,000 for the procedure, and monitoring. and i paid about $6000 out of pocket for my medications. Each frozen embryo transfer costed $4000, and ultrasounds were anywhere from $600-$1000. Medications for FET were much cheaper. Lupron was about $80 per vial, and Progesterone in oil was $10. Estrace was so minimal in cost i dont even remember caring about the cost.

[Dr. Shenoy] is very professional, but also personal. She kept me informed and explained everything after my egg retrieval in a way that I could understand. We had her again for a frozen embryo transfer and felt very confident in her doing our transfer...[she] Recommend 1 our first three rounds...She was great to talk to! Explained very thing very well. Checked in on me frequently.
[Mayo Clinic is] A well- known hospital with great doctors and nurses! Trusted their advice and opinions. I did get frustrated after our third failed embryo transfer that they weren’t trying different options. [Dr. Chandra Shenoy] was very kind and compassionate. She listened to our concerns and explained everything very well. We never felt rushed. Any questions we had were answered in a timely and professional manner...Although we did not have desired results due to poor egg quality that we were previously unaware of, she was wonderful to work with...We truly felt that she was invested in our success and just as disappointed in the outcome.
[Mayo clinic] makes communication easy and keeps you very informed. Scheduling is efficient and everyone you encounter is very helpful...Lad results were reported very quickly and easily accessible through an online portal...Typically, retrieval is approximately $20,000 without any coverage. Due to my previous cancer diagnosis, we qualified for the Livestrong Fertility program which reduced out of pocket cost to $8500 for what was covered, with an additional approximate $1000 not covered.

Dr. Shenoy switched me from Clomid to Letrozole, because she told me that according to research, she thought I would have a better success rate on Letrozole. She also discussed more "aggressive" treatment options, such as hcg injections with monitoring and IUIs, but helped me decide at that point in time I was okay with just trying the oral medication. She also explained future options and at what point she would recommend IVF.
Mayo Clinic is obviously a great institution and one of the best hospitals in the world. At times, I have felt that they are so confident in their abilities and treatments as a whole that individual concerns and exceptions get overlooked.... One time my prescription was called in under my husband's name. To be fair, they were treating us as a couple in Reproductive Endocrinology, so both of our records were open when the prescription was made. They did correct the problem as soon as it was discovered.
How was your experience with Chandra Shenoy at Mayo Clinic?

She listened to everything I had to say, did a great job explaining her reasons for her recommended treatment, and answered all of my questions. Very helpful and made sure I knew what was going on was able to answer any questions that I had. Posted updates to my procedures on my online portal. Chandra [ Shenoy] did my egg retrieval and first transfer..unfortunately it was unsuccessful... I was only able to transfer 1 embryo my first time....being as I only had 2 embryos left after that..I was given the option to transfer 1 or 2
Mayo clinic is a great place and they are very helpful. The only thing I didn't like compared to some other places is the cost of the IVF procedure... The amount I had to pay for the IVf procedure was 9100..there was a 3500 monitoring fee that went through my insurance and remaining was billed later... Excellent team and were very responsive to all my questions that I sent on the online portal!!

Mayo clinic is a great place and they are very helpful. The only thing I didn't like compared to some other places is the cost of the IVF procedure...if the cost was a lot lower I would continue to go to then. However I've heard of other great places that are significantly cheaper and am goin to be goin that route. Other then cost I never had an issue with Mayo Clinic
