Success w/ Doc Too early to know
I have not had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Fuji much personally...When I booked a separate consultation for an explanation of the IVF process, he was very thorough and I was grateful for his time...With my unexplained infertility diagnosis, Dr. Fuji recommended moving to IUI. We did clomid, mid-cycle ultrasound, trigger shot, and then the IUI through an outside clinic. However, none of these appointments were with Dr. Fuji.
The services offered by Tripler in partnership with the Fertility Institute of Hawaii are a tremendous blessing to military families, whose fertility treatments would otherwise be completely out of pocket. The significantly reduced cost is why we chose to use the REI at Tripler. I do, however, wish that communication and personal relationships were a bit stronger. It is extremely difficult to get in touch with the clinic, and it usually takes 2-3 days to get questions answered.
How was your experience with Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center?
I have not had the opportunity to interact with Dr. Fuji much personally-I have seen several other doctors within the clinic. When I booked a separate consultation for an explanation of the IVF process, he was very thorough and I was grateful for his time.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center?
Don’t be afraid to book an additional appointment for a more in depth consultation! The clinic has limited hours and appointments may not be given the amount of time they need to answer all of your questions.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center?
In my first two appointments, I felt very rushed and that my lab results were not fully discussed. I was just told everything looked normal. I would have liked more of an explanation and analysis. However, as we prepare to move into the next steps after several IUI and two miscarriages, I booked a consultation with Dr. Fuji and he took about 40 minutes to really talk me through the process of IVF, which I greatly appreciated.

Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Tripler Army Medical Center.
While the nursing staff is expected to manage a great deal of patients, I have had tremendous difficulty getting in touch with them. Incorrect information has been communicated regarding the wait lists, which led to a wide range of emotions.

Assessment and diagnosis- $0 through tricare prime. Only tricare prime members can be seen at the Tripler REI clinic. IUI-$100-200 depending on which clinic performs the procedure IVF-$12000 with genetic testing. Approximately $5000 for the procedure, $5000 for the genetic testing (unless there are fewer than 5 eggs), and $2000 for the storage fees up to one year. If your care is managed by the Tripler REI, your medications are covered and managed by the clinic.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Tripler Army Medical Center.
We were told initially that our IVF cycle would be in the January-February or March timeframe. Then, when I called to see if there was anything I needed to do, I was told it would not be until August-October of the following year. Then I received a call that I would be doing IVF in 2 months, which made it impossible to apply for most grants and significantly changed the way we were planning financially.

Success w/ Doc Too early to know
[Dr. Fujii] always asks if I have any questions before and after appointments/ treatments. He is very pleasant and easy going while still maintaining a professional and confident demeanor that makes me feel like I’m in capable hands. He tried to explain procedures and outcomes in a way that I can understand and pauses to make sure I fully understand...
Tripler is the only clinic for military families on island so they’re very busy. It can take about 4 months to be seen for infertility and start an IVF cycle. They do, however, work with a civilian clinic called Fertility Institute of Hawaii which means we can use our military doctors and their facility which translates to a discounted IVF cycle and a continuity of care...Tripler clinic advocates for single egg transfer
How was your experience with Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center?
As a medical professional I do not need as much explanation as other patients may need and would appreciate a more medical explanation of the bodies process during this treatment. I do think, though, that he is compassionate, professional, knowledgeable, sensitive to the situation, and encouraging even when I am not given the best circumstances. I do not know his views on certain non pharmacological interventions but have not been offered any suggestions from him.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center?
Ask questions, do your own evidence-based research on factors that are specific to you and bring them to him attention so that you may address them together. Treat him like a partner in your healthcare and do not take your frustrations of your situation out on him
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center?
The doctor took time to get to know me and also introduce himself before beginning any procedures. He told me about his background. He always asks if I have any questions before and after appointments/ treatments. Describe the protocols Dennis Fujii used in your cycles at Tripler Army Medical Center and their degree of success.
Transvaginal ultrasounds to measure uterine lining and follicle size. Subq gonal f (225) and menopur( 150 and later moved up to 225). Daily u/s and lab work of progesterone and estradiol before retrieval for 4 days straight. Am antagonist when some follicles were developing more quickly than others and he wanted to give other follicles a chance to catch up ( progesterone labs showed it was safe to do so).
Describe your experience with the nursing staff at Tripler Army Medical Center.
Slightly disorganized feel because 2 doctors left the practice and two more were coming in. They are also the only ones in island that service military so the clinic is constantly bombarded with patients
Describe your experience with Tripler Army Medical Center.
Tripler is the only clinic for military families on island so they’re very busy. It can take about 4 months to be seen for infertility and start an IVF cycle. They do, however, work with a civilian clinic called Fertility Institute of Hawaii which means we can use our military doctors and their facility which translates to a discounted IVF cycle and a continuity of care ( we do not have to transfer our care to FIH doctors). We can also have egg retrieval’s at ideal times even if it falls on the weekend because of the use of this facility which is not the case for every military clinic.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Dennis Fujii at Tripler Army Medical Center.
Approximately $7,500 for a complete IVF cycle including medications and approximately $5,000 for PGS
Describe Dennis Fujii's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Tripler Army Medical Center.
Tripler clinic advocates for single egg transfer to reduce the chance of twin pregnancies as they are more dangerous to mother and baby.
What specific things went wrong at Tripler Army Medical Center?
  • Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
  • Scheduled the wrong procedure
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Tripler Army Medical Center.
There was an instance where the doctor did not submit the order for my medications for the pharmacy and got caught up in his next appointment. Once he got out of his appointment he submitted the order. This resulted in an hour wait for me at the pharmacy. The nurses accidentally scheduled me for an appointment for the day after my egg retrieval. When I went to check in at the front desk they asked if I was there for an ultrasound and I said no. The nurse who scheduled me for the appointment came out to apologize and said she meant to schedule someone else instead.
