How was your experience with Donna Session at Wilmington Fertility Center?
Dr. Session is a fantastic REI. She is extremely knowledgeable and I have been so happy under her care. She makes sure you are aware of each risk/benefit/and alternative. She makes us feel well taken care of and I look forward to moving towards IVF with her.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Donna Session at Wilmington Fertility Center?
To just make the appointment already and you won’t be disappointed.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Donna Session at Wilmington Fertility Center?
Extremely thorough and informed consent. Makes you feel like you are in good hands.

IVF pending
Describe your experience with your nurse at Wilmington Fertility Center. (Assigned nurse: Cindy)
Love love love Cindy and the nursing staff. There were some miscommunications that with being a newer clinic needed ironing out. That was a little stressful but overall they have been fantastic and have worked with me, even when I’m most emotional on cycle day 1.
Describe your experience with Wilmington Fertility Center.
Strengths- Personable, welcoming, knowledgeable
Weaknesses- Scheduling appointments, I was told I could not do an IUI while I had an IVF consult scheduled although it was a cycle apart. Every fertility patient is waiting on a pregnancy test so as self pay that was difficult to understand.
The financing department is a little delayed after receiving a treatment plan and I was unable to do a second round of IUI due to it. As self pay I wish there was a waiver I could sign if it didn’t go through insurance in time.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Donna Session at Wilmington Fertility Center.
IUI- $1100
IVF $15,000 for everything including ICSi (meds not included)

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Wilmington Fertility Center.
Miscommunication. Had an IVF consult scheduled but was told I could not have that scheduled and do an IUI in the cycle before. I’m self pay so I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t do the IUI and then if was successful cancel the consult or even pay for it if it was a last minute cancellation.
Dr. Sessions has really fit the bill for what I’ve been looking for. She tells the truth about your situation, gives options if she can’t help, isn’t just there for your money. She’s the only doctor I’ve gone to that is logical and realistic. Given me all my options and more...I really found her intelligence, knowledge on the subject, and willingness to change our plan if needed a strength
You are given a lot of information and sometimes it can be overwhelming. But you can email them [Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health nurses] and they answer all your questions. If they don’t know an answer, they will look into it for you...The weakness is that it’s very hard to contact the clinic via phone. But you can email through their online system and they will get back to you eventually. I don’t think it’s the best for a individual who likes to get on the phone to discuss your procedures before going. Also, if you miss a call, it’s hard to get ahold of them again. But they do have a dispatcher to help facilitate emails and calls.
How was your experience with Donna Session at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed)?
When I first went in to see Dr. Sessions, I had been to countless other clinics before, she really took the time to assess my case. She actually interrupted the accounts receivable’s lady to change my plan. We were chatting egg freezing before a surgery I needed to do. Instead, she gave me a great specialist who could do my surgery and told me I didn’t need to do such things. I could do this without and proceeded to make a different plan for me. Because I’ve seen my fair share of doctors, I really found her intelligence, knowledge on the subject, and willingness to change our plan if needed a strength. I haven’t really experienced any weaknesses but I can understand if your needing more comforting and extremely warm, this is probably not the doctor for you. But she’s always been positive and helpful when I needed her to be.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Donna Session at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed)?
Get ready to be told a lot of information. Be ready to jot it all down and follow her instructions. Also come in with your own questions and research, she’s very good at answering all your questions. Also, make sure to ask her all your options. There are many out there. She’s not going to give you a hug, but she is a book of information and is very helpful in this very complicated circumstance.

She’s the only doctor I’ve gone to that is logical and realistic. Given me all my options and more. Not everything is looked at through rose color glasses and I appreciate that especially when dealing with infertility. She’s also very nice and gives a lot of details. I felt she was also very educated in her field and knows about new technology that I didn’t find in other RE doctor or fertility clinics.
Describe the protocols Donna Session used in your cycles at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed) and their degree of success.
After my surgery (endo, fibroids, polyps), I needed to wait a second to heal. I tried on my own first and then we decided to do Timed Intercourse first because that’s what I was most comfortable trying. We did two months of it and then COVID-19 shut them down. But during that time I first went into the office to check my ovaries and make sure I didn’t have any cysts. After I was okayed, I then took Letrozole for 5 days. Went back into the clinic to check to see how many eggs I grew and then did the trigger shot (Ovidrel) that day. We planned on intercourse that day and the next and the next and then I used vaginal progesterone for the rest of the cycle until I took a pregnancy test. We are going to IUI next.

Everyone knows your name and is very empathetic. There have been a couple of hiccups but that’s mainly my fault. You are given a lot of information and sometimes it can be overwhelming. But you can email them and they answer all your questions. If they don’t know an answer, they will look into it for you.
Describe your experience with Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
The clinic is part of the college Vanderbuilt so I think the strength is that the doctors are required to be updated with the newest technology. The weakness is that it’s very hard to contact the clinic via phone. But you can email through their online system and they will get back to you eventually. I don’t think it’s the best for a individual who likes to get on the phone to discuss your procedures before going. Also, if you miss a call, it’s hard to get ahold of them again. Describe the costs associated with your care under Donna Session at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
It’s the same as everywhere. My insurance barely covers anything. It all goes to a portal and I pay through there. I do have the option for payment plans through the portal.
Timed Intercourse:
Ovidrel - $95 at the Walgreens on Galiton in East Nash
Letrozole- $10
Ultrasounds - $30 -$1500
IUI:
Procedure ~$450
Sperm wash ~ $200
Ovidrel - $95-$200
letrozole - $10
Describe Donna Session's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
Dr. Session and the nurses always remembered my name and my patient history. I also saw Dr. Session every appointment...is the second doctor we have been too. During out first appointment we explained our concerns with her and she did a great job of coming up with a plan that we felt comfortable with. I do sometimes wish she would have given me more changes I could make to my lifestyle that might be helpful in the fertility process. After our first IVF egg retrieval and transfer we ended up getting pregnant and we are due in January.
This clinic [Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health] does not have their own facility for IVF yet, so you have to go to a different clinic to get the retrievals/transfers done. They are very on-time and very quick to help with any scheduling needs, it was not an issue for us at all...One of the nurses on staff was much better at answering our questions and emails, but they are both very kind and do great work...Ultrasounds were around $388 for us

She was always very nice and incredibly smart, but she also keeps the visits fairly business. She didn't hurry us along, but after she explained things to us and we didn't have questions she would move on pretty quickly. So try and come prepared with specific questions you might have, or just let her know that you don't quite understand if thats the case and she will make sure you leave with a clear understanding of the plan.

What specific things went wrong at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed)?
I felt Dr. Session didn’t explain the processes well or our options. She lets you guide your treatment and at the time we were new to infertility and had very little information.... And now after I have researched fertility treatments I wish she would not have spent so much time with us just doing timed intercourse and a low dosage of femara or clomid.... I feel like we wasted 8 months of valuable time because I was 36 during this time.
The nurses were great. They were very compassionate and communicated well.... Strengths is the clinic [Tennessee Fertility Institute] was nice and new. It was also nice to be able to a see the doctor every visit because it was a smaller clinic. Weakness is the wait times were long because the doctor sees everyone and she’s the only doctor there. And also Dr. Session was just not the right doctor for us because of the lack of communication and knowledge she provided us.
How was your experience with Donna Session at Tennessee Fertility Institute (Prelude Network clinic)?
I felt Dr. Session didn’t explain the processes well or our options. She lets you guide your treatment and at the time we were new to infertility and had very little information. She’s quiet, but so am I so for this process we did not make the best match. I’m not saying she’s not a good doctor; she just wasn’t the best fit for me. And now after I have researched fertility treatments I wish she would not have spent so much time with us just doing timed intercourse and a low dosage of femara or clomid. We did this for 8 months (1 month we had a cyst so could not try, 1 month I was unable to try because I could not get my medication refilled due to their office being closed during the holidays so I was unable to get the ultrasound done to get the medication.) I feel like we wasted 8 months of valuable time because I was 36 during this time.
What's one piece of advice would you give a prospective patient of Donna Session at Tennessee Fertility Institute (Prelude Network clinic)?
Make sure to do research prior to meeting her so you can ask any questions you want and also so you don’t stay in the dark about important information because she did not give us the information we needed to make the best decisions about our treatments. Again I think she took a more cautious approach and I felt maybe I was too old to be spending so much time on timed intercourse.
During treatment, were you treated like a number or a human with Donna Session at Tennessee Fertility Institute (Prelude Network clinic)?
Dr. Session is not very personable and we felt like in our first visit with her she just spoke to us like we were doctors ourselves and we felt she didn’t explain things well.
Describe the protocols Donna Session used in your cycles at Tennessee Fertility Institute (Prelude Network clinic) and their degree of success.
We did timed intercourse and I took either femara or clomid each cycle. I would go in for an ultrasound to check for cysts before I was given the medication.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Tennessee Fertility Institute (Prelude Network clinic).
I just felt the doctor did not give us the appropriate information we needed to make informed decisions as new fertility patients and she wasted too much time on less aggressive treatments for someone my age.
she [Dr. Donna Session] is quick to return correspondence. She is very knowledgeable and discusses the science behind her decision making. She is patient and will answer all of your questions and look into things that she may not have considered before. She also very carefully reviewed records from another clinic and went through all of her concerns regarding prior treatment.
[Vanderbilt's] Weakness: difficult to get in contact with someone over the phone in the event of an emergency. There are several road blocks you have to overcome in order to get in touch with someone who can help. Strengths: Once you are able to get through to the staff everyone is very helpful and supportive.... Jodie [a nurse] is kind and will try her hardest to get what you need done. She is very hopeful and seems to genuinely want everyone to do well.

Dr. Session is very smart and kind but she is not the "warm and fuzzy" type which is perfectly fine given the quality of her care.

I felt that she took the time to talk to me during every visit. I never feel rushed. She always returns my phone calls or electronic messages as does her nurse.
Describe the protocols Donna Session used in your cycles at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed) and their degree of success.
She has different strategies for every patient depending on what your baseline issue is. For patients with DOR with a low AFC she will consider clomid or letrozole focusing and getting fewer, high quality eggs rather than having patients spend 4-6K on injectable medications that will yield similar results. For patients with mid-tier AFC she will max out medications and prime with estradiol patches or lupron. She rarely does this for the first cycle due to fear of ovarian hyperstimulation. Her strategies are largely patient dependent.

Describe Donna Session's approach to eSET (elective single embryo transfer) vs. multiple embryo transfer at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
For fresh transfers, if embryo quality is fair to poor on day 3 or five she may transfer 2 or more. For good quality day 5 embryos in patients in their mid thirties and below she will recommend transferring one embryo and will give estimates on the chance of multiples if patients have assisted hatching or PGD testing done.

Failed to call in prescriptions to pharmacy
Describe the specific things that went wrong at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
Not a huge thing. Requested prescriptions be sent to several pharmacies for pricing and one pharmacy was omitted inadvertently which caused a bit of a challenge when we tried to pick up medication.
I was prescribed Clomid on my first round. It made me crazy! When I went back for a follow up, she [Dr. Donna Session] listened to what I had to say and adjusted accordingly. She assured me that it was normal for some women. She changed the medication for the next round and I was finally back to my normal self. We did three rounds total with one round of IUI. We were hopeful, however it did not work out and I gave my body a break to recover.
Responsive. They [Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health] learn your name quickly and remember you. Felt like I mattered. There were times that I arrived on time for my appointment however I waited for 20 min to be put in a room. There were times it would be 30 min before anyone came in the room to see you. They have a portal which is nice to see your lab results. The only thing I did t like about the portal was the email option. After the nurse responded, you did not have the option to reply back. You had to start a new email.

I felt that Dr Session listened to all of our questions and answered the best she could. She definitely reads up on the latest studies and is proactive in treatment. While it was sometimes frustrating to go to some of the ultrasounds to check follicles and not see the Doctor and see a resident, she was there for all the important procedures...When we received a negative result she called me as soon as she could to find out how I was and give me options for next time if we chose to do it again.
There are many times when there is a long wait for your appointment [at TN Fertility Institute] but it doesn't happen every time. Sometimes there seem to be communication issues internally...Stephanie went over and above my expectations. She was caring, responsive and communicated well through the process. She always called when she said she would after a blood draw, even on Saturday...It was $12,000 for the IVF process, $550 for anesthesia and PGS was $5,500 but was optional.

Dr. Sessions is very thorough and answers any and all questions you have. She is concerned with your well being. The nurses are very caring and personable.
Describe the protocols Donna Session used in your cycles at Tennessee Reproductive Medicine and their degree of success.
My protocol started with using estrogen patches and Cetrotide 9 days after a positive ovulation kit to suppress because I have diminished ovarian reserve. Then I used Gonal-F at a high dose twice a day plus Menopur 75iu until the follicles were a good size and then used Cetrotide. After retrieval I used progesterone in oil shots and Lovenox shots to help with clotting due to previous pregnancy losses. We were originally going to PGS test but decided not to when we only had 3.

We had to do a self pay plan due to no insurance coverage for fertility treatments but they did cover diagnostic testing. It was $12,000 for the IVF process, $550 for anesthesia and PGS was $5,500 but was optional. The meds were purchased from an outside pharmacy.
Each visit she [Dr Donna Session] is the one who does the ultrasounds, gives me info, etc. I have never had an appointment where I didn't see her...When I had started seeing Dr. Session I had already been through 4 rounds of clomid, unmonitored. She immediately recommended switching to Femara. She was never pushy about any treatment. We are currently on our second round of Femara with Trigger shot. She is allowing us to decide when we are ready to move into IUI.
Vanderbilt Clinic is very large. I prefer a smaller office. I see Dr. Session at the 100 Oaks facility and it feels like an airport. It is nice that everything is in one location, but I am happy that she is moving to a smaller office end of May....Dr. Session has always been very kind and knowledgable. Luckily, my insurance covered anything that had to be done to determine why I am not able to get pregnant. I did have to pay a co-pay for each visit and my ultrasounds, thus far, have only cost me $30 out of pocket for each. The trigger shots cost $162 each and were not covered by insurance at all. Fertility meds have been $7 each month.
Procedure went smooth [with Dr. Donna Session] but we were not pregnant. IUI number 2 - same treatment as before and same outcome. We are now doing IVF, just beginning our treatments for egg retrieval...She makes sure she is there through it all with you...I felt I was the only person she was treating and that's a good feeling...She is very knowledgeable and gives reccomendations based on your personal needs. Doctor jargon always confuses me, she has no problem putting it into words I can understand. She is caring and considerate when things dont work out as planned. I also appreciate her humor, I need someone who can be serious when need be but doesnt always have to be.
I love having the online portal [at Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health] to get test results and ask any questions I need to without having to schedule an appointment. They are always quick to respond. One time I tried to call to set up an appt thinking it would be the faster route only to find out the messaging system goes directly to them and is the fastest route. No problems here, no one likes to wait around on the phone anyway.

IUI number 1 - switched me to letrozole to stimulate egg growth and said it would help to control my lining better. Things looke good to continue so we used Ovidrel for the egg drop. Procedure went smooth but we were not pregnant.

Dr. Session is amazing! Her care and personality are wonderful. I got all the answers I needed and never had to second guess her medical decisions for me. I was allowed to be an active participant in my care.... Dr. Session was on point and told me what to expect and the potential outcomes. I always have the big picture, good and bad. She is also very caring and loving, and you feel that you are her priority when she is with you
They [the nurses at Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health] are the absolute best. They inform you daily with lab results and the recommendation from the doctor. They are considerate of your time. Always happy and smiling.... First cycle-high doses of Gonal-F, high doses of menopur, and cetrotide. Second cycle-more of a mini ivf cycle. Letrozole, Gonal-F 75, Menopur, and cetrotide. The thought was to do lower doses but for an extended period. This was in hope that my ovaries would respond better.

Second cycle-more of a mini ivf cycle. Letrozole, Gonal-F 75, Menopur, and cetrotide. The thought was to do lower doses but for an extended period. This was in hope that my ovaries would respond better.

They are the absolute best. They inform you daily with lab results and the recommendation from the doctor. They are considerate of your time. Always happy and smiling.
Describe your experience with Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
Weakness is the office manager. She is unprofessional, unorganized, and overall insensitive to the infertility and financial aspects. She is the worst part of this clinic.

It was convenient for my schedule.
Describe the costs associated with your care under Donna Session at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).

[Dr. Donna Session] was very understanding, thorough, patient, and helpful. She never rushed us when making decisions or through appointments when we had questions. She took her time and really went through everything in detail with us...She remembered us from appointment to appointment and always knew the details of our situation.
The clinic [Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health] is a great clinic. Some long wait times to get new patient appointments but once you are an established patient, getting appointments-even next day-is easy. The clinic has always been clean, quiet, and well stocked...The nursing staff was awesome. We used the portal for communication and we always had a response within the hour, even on weekends.

Describe the specific things that went wrong at Vanderbilt Fertility Clinic (closed).
We had to fax test results multiple times before the clinic actually called and said they received them.
Dr. Session sat with me for a long time in my first visit with her going over my past history and what she would recommend moving forward. She is very analytical and lays out her reasoning for her choices, siting studies she has read and other doctors in the field. She performed a hysteroscopy on me to remove calcium deposits. Unfortunately, she did not have a lab to perform IVF at Vanderbilt. If she did, I would have done an IVF cycle with her.
If you are going to Dr. Session as an RE, the office setup can be a problem. She shares a large office with OBGYN group. This means there will be children, babies, and pregnant ladies in the waiting room. This can be a painful trigger for many undergoing fertility treatments. ... The cost of the hysteroscopy at Vanderbilt was around $22,000. After insurance coverage, we paid $2,500.

Vanderbilt is a teaching hospital so there was always a student with Dr. Session. She would ask if they could participate in the exams, but it does feel a bit like you are a spectacle.

We did not feel comfortable with her [Dr. Session] or he clinic after our initial consultation. We had already seen two other REs and they were much more impressive. I don’t feel like she looked at my chart. I had to correct several things she said. She was willing to work with a repductive immunologist and that may have helped but we did not feel she fit our complex case ...
Associated with Vanderbilt and they [Vanderbuilt Center for Women's Health] have amazing resources. In my opinion I was disappointed with the approach, I was hoping she would think more out of the box or at least be more proactive to my history ... They [nursing staff] were all very nice, but didn’t work closely with any ... I was misdiagnosed originally with a bicornuate uterus when I really had a septate uterus. All REs have recommended single due to uterine anamoly ...

Dr. Session was at every appointment and even does the base line ultrasound.... Dr. Session is very welcoming caring and understanding. She treats you like a human and not a number. It's very obvious her passion for the research side of things and finding out exactly why it's not working for you. Knowing she loves the research behind it all is very comforting because I believe she won't do a procedure she truly doesn't think will work.
You see the same two nurses each time and they are both very friendly and kind....It's a nice mix demographic in the waiting room [Vanderbilt Ctr for Women's Health] so does not feel heavy and depressing like most RE offices. Staff is very kind and welcoming. Waiting room feels like a regular office visit. Only weakness is that it is pretty busy and can sometimes take a long time to be able to even sign in.... She [Dr. Session] is at every appointment and spends at least 15-20 min with us each time....Very compassionate and relatable. Doesn’t make you feel like there is anything wrong with you and always sounds hopeful. Her bedside manner is great and you feel like you’re talking to a friend. Would recommend her to anyone seeking treatment before any other clinic in town....She tends to always bring up eliminating embryos if more than 2 which I’m not comfortable with
Both of the nurses that work with dr. Sessions [at Vanderbilt Ctr for Women's Health] are great! You see them at every visit and both are so sweet and caring....It’s great! It’s a good mix of drs so it’s not just fertility patients in the waiting room. That was something that can be hard for people. Being in waiting rooms that feel heavy and depressing, that is not the feeling at this clinic at all....Billed after and was on par with other clinics.

Dr. Session is VERY smart. She has clearly done a lot of research and continues to educate herself on options and medications. She understands each situation is unique and there isn’t a one size fits all solution to infertility. She made us feel confident that we were going with the right doctor and treatment plan. We always feel comfortable asking her questions and never feel rushed...She took the time to understand our history, and plans. Gave us options that and fully explained each one.
[Wilmington Fertility Center has] Lots of availability for appointments. Quick responses back and follow up’s especially with financials. However, all financial does go through Boston IVF which can be frustrating. Could improve front desk staff...Dr. Session is VERY smart.
